St. Peter Catholic School During Catholic Schools Week! St. Peter School a word from Fr. Kevin Gormley, Pastor of St. Peter Church & School

The above theme is the one selected for this year’s National Catholic Schools Week. This annual event focusses attention on the good work done by the nation’s Catholic Schools. This 2015 theme closely parallels the three tasks of Jesus’ mission: faith comes from preaching; knowledge comes from teaching; and service is how we go about healing. The National Catholic Education Association reports that the 7,400 Catholic Schools provide $19.8 billion in savings each year for the nation. This figure is based on the average public school per-student cost of $8,700. In most states, including Missouri, Catholic Schools get no state aid, but yet parents are required to pay taxes. If the 2.2 million Catholic students went to the public school, the citizens’ taxes would increase considerably. This is an enormous gift, especially during these challenging economic times. Students who are being educated today are not the same as those who have graduated in the past; the “millennial” generation is quite different because the world has changed significantly. Technology, computers and the media have created a whole new world. Some of the secular press and entertainment media advocate and foster a culture that is in conflict with Gospel values. The sacredness of life and traditional values are challenged and profaned. We are developing more of a culture of death than a culture of life. Parents place their children in Catholic schools for three reasons: the superior academic achievement of Catholic school students, the secure and disciplined learning environment, and a total education that includes growth in religious awareness and the formation of morals and values. Catholic schools are not a luxury that we can lightly

choose or reject. In a world which is dominated by so much selfishness and violence, so many counter-messages to Christian values and faith, Catholic schools are essential for valued education and formation of our children. St. Peter School is being transformed by an infusion of young voices with the addition of Infant/Toddler & Preschool Programs. All grades are testing above grade level on standardized tests. For example, the 8th Grade scored at a 9.3 level, the 7th grade scored at 12.1 (where a senior would be in the first month of 12th year.) The new Saxon Math Program is used in Pre-K through 8th Grade. The students are introduced to the need to be of service to the larger community. During this year here at St. Peter School students took part in such projects as Pennies for the Cure – fighting Breast Cancer; Miles for Meals Walk-a-Thon to benefit the Senior Center; Saline County Holiday Project for needy families and Special Olympics funding. During this past Christmas session the students sent 33 gift boxes to our soldiers overseas and the K-3rd grades collected a pick-up truck load for the Food Pantry. This outpouring of community service was exemplified with benefit breakfast for a young friend who is undergoing cancer treatment. We are saddened by the fact that Mr. Littrell is retiring at the end of the School Year. He has done so much for our school and he will be sorely missed. Competing against 36 other Catholic Schools the Speech Team students received high honors and do well in basketball, volleyball and soccer competitions. As we celebrate 130 years of Catholic Education here in Marshall we are most grateful to the larger community of Marshall who give great support to insure that St. Peter School shines as a beacon of holistic education in Marshall. What is being accomplished here is indicative of the spirit of enthusiasm, purpose and commitment on the part of the strong leadership of our principal, Gary Littrell and dedicated faculty and staff, school board and Home & School Association as well as parents and parishioners who show interest in the support of the student’s education. With an ever-increasing enrollment, we have a future as we continue to make the investment and for this we rejoice.

St. Peter School Mission Statement and Goals The mission of St Peter School is to provide an education which will nurture the spiritual, emotional, physical and academic growth of each student, helping them to become productive Christian citizens. With God’s help, all will learn and grow.

School Philosophy We believe that each child is a unique individual with their own special dignity created in the image and likeness of God. Each has been given talents to develop and use. The atmosphere, which the school provides, will contribute to each child’s growth and development in such a way that they will be able to contribute to the welfare of our American and global society. In an atmosphere permeated with gospel values, pupils will learn respect for themselves, others, and God. The school will make every endeavor to help each pupil to grow in his/her own uniqueness, strengths and weaknesses. We endeavor to foster this growth through our teaching ministry by proclaiming the GOSPEL MESSAGE of hope, peace and justice, taught and lived in a FAITH COMMUNITY that worships together and reaches out in SERVICE to others. The school will help each pupil to accept responsibility for their own individual life and actions as well as having a sense of responsibility for the well being of others. The school, recognizing the primacy of the role of parents in the education of their children, will assist them in their God-given responsibilities by reinforcing family and Christian values; by guaranteeing excellence in training their children in the faith and practice of the Catholic Church. By assisting each child to become an accepting and responsible individual, the school will attempt to build a better society and bring about peace and justice. Mindful of our uniqueness, the school will endeavor to impart quality of instruction that stresses excellence. Emphasis will be placed on cooperation rather than competition. Learning opportunities will challenge pupils’ talents for greater growth and development. The school will train its students in an appreciation of the dignity and sacredness of all. Self-discipline, needed to demonstrate a strong sense of appreciation and respect for themselves and others, will be strongly encouraged and demanded. We believe that each child is of incalculable worth and has a right to the opportunity for complete human growth.

St Peter Catholic School’s desired outcome is to instill in our students a lifelong love of learning and the confidence to tackle new challenges; to develop in the child a deep personal relationship with Jesus; and foster the virtues and skills of mind and heart which enable him /her to translate the Gospel values into social action and reform.
