Theatre Season Barnum, Oct. 23-25, 2008 Music by Cy Coleman Lyrics by Michael Stewart Book by Mark Bramble

Come see the Greatest Show on Earth as Barnum takes the center ring. This musical portrayal of the life of P.T. Barnum leaps through his life in colorful song and dance. As Barnum defends the “noble art of humbug”, we meet the oldest woman, the smallest man in the world, a glamorous Swedish Nightingale, as well as a cavalcade of clowns. His loyal wife, Charity, may try to tame him, but nothing can stop the irresistible spirit of BARNUM!

The Insanity of Mary Girard, Dec. 4-6, 2008 by Lanie Robertson Based on a true story, this chilling, dark drama takes place in the fall of 1790, when a woman named Mary Girard is committed into an insane asylum by her husband after she becomes pregnant by another man. While she claims she is not insane, a group of furies dance and move around Mary, transforming into people from her past. As more facts are revealed, the question becomes: Is Mary actually insane or is it her status as a woman that leads everyone to believe only the word of Stephan Girard?

Another Antigone, Feb. 19-21, 2009 by A.R. Gurney After many years of teaching the classics, Professor Harper has become very protective of his beloved Greek masterpieces. So when a gifted young student announces that she intends to submit an updated, anti-nuclear version of Antigone in place of the formal paper he has assigned to her, he is adamant in his refusal. This refusal sets in motion a series of events that closely parallels the original Greek drama. The play is a provocative and continually absorbing examination of some of the more vexing problems besetting present-day institutions of higher education.

A Scrap of Paper, April 16-18, 2009 by Victorien Sardou Three years prior to the beginning of the play, a compromising note was written from a young girl to a man. Now, the girl is married and the man wishes to pursue her younger sister, but that pesky Scrap of Paper keeps resurfacing and ending up in the wrong hands!!! Come celebrate with Adrian College as we honor our sesquicentennial with this delightful and intriguing comedy that was enjoyed by late nineteenth century audiences. The Adrian College Chapter of the national dramatics honorary society, Theta Alpha Phi, announces its annual presentation of new student written plays. This student producing organization presents new works by Adrian College students each fall. This year’s selections are:

Alone by Angelica Lopez Ana finds herself in a police station being questioned for a murder that she has no recollection of. She begins to question herself and her perception of reality while she relives a story to die for.

Life Changes by Karen M. Thompson Eight college students face challenges of commitment, changes, and the realization that what they planned may not be what life has planned for them. Through both inner monologue and conversation, they all connect and intertwine in some way, bringing some together and some apart, as they each struggle to come to terms with what’s facing them and figure out which way to go next.
