Message from the Managing Director

Annual Report 2015 : 7

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company has maintained its high performance rates and industry growth across all MICE sectors in 2015 as part of the wider strong economic growth and development of the entire Emirate of Abu Dhabi. We have achieved significant successes and achievements in the past year both in terms of new exhibitions and, significantly, the range of companies that have come to Abu Dhabi for the first time. Thanks to our high-end facilities, infrastructure, logistics capability and cutting-edge technical services, we were able to host specialized events and activities that contributed to exposing the international business community, organisers and exhibitors to our capabilities in the MICE industry. UAE youth now represents the backbone of the company and our businesses across the MICE industry. They are effectively and positively contributing to achieving the company’s impressive returns at all levels, forming the spine of our 10 year story of consecutive growth. Our UAE youth are our collective hope for the future, the key to sustaining our growth and attracting ever more events and activities to our wide range of centres. That is why I am especially proud to say that our Emiratization was 55% by the end of last year. More than sixteen young men and women joined ADNEC last year. These young professionals will continue to develop our company, backed by a leadership that prioritises providing a collaborative and positive working environment that values fostering creativity and technological innovation. Moreover, our attention and focus on continuous and ongoing training for all is a key plank of remaining competitive in an ever crowded global marketplace. 2016 represents another step in our ambitious journey based on progress, prosperity, innovation and creativity. Through this year we will always keep in mind the regional and global challenges we face, both in the MICE industry and as a wider economy, and hope that we can continue to help us together overcome some of these by providing a competitive platform for the Emirate and its businesses on the world stage.

Economic impact

As a Public Joint Stock Company owned by the Government of Abu Dhabi, ADNEC plays an essential role in helping the Emirate achieve its long term goals of economic growth and diversification. Through a series of world class exhibitions, conventions and events, ADNEC assists in growing the business tourism (MICE sector) and generating non-oil related economic impact. The key metric used to measure ADNEC’s economic impact is the Gross Value Added (GVA) which is equivalent to GDP adjusted for taxes and subsidies. ADNEC’s core business is staging international exhibitions and conferences in addition to providing planning support for event organisers. ADNEC also generates revenues from a number of ancillary sources, including catering, leasing of retail units and serviced offices across its venues and premises. The economic impact calculation depends on key variables and parameters like number of visitors, type (domestic and international), length of stay, average spend, services and goods involved, hotels and airline etc. The model considers various types of affected sectors like wholesale, retail trade, repairing services, restaurants and hotels, transport, storage and communication. As shown in the chart below, ADNEC’s Gross Value Added (GVA) has improved and increased during the last 5 years, benefiting from the growth in hosted international events like IDEX, ADIPEC, SIAL and many others. For the year 2015, ADNEC has achieved a GVA of AED3,478 billion, an increase of 26% (AED718 million) over 2014.

Other parameters that we also measure as part of our economic impact formula is the number of jobs supported in the UAE, hotel room nights generated through our hosted international exhibitions and conferences and the economic output generated. For 2015, ADNEC’s activities supported 18,630 jobs within the emirate of Abu Dhabi, an increase of 28% over 2014 number (14,502). This increase in jobs supported is again due mostly to IDEX which helps support around 3,000 jobs. Room nights generated increased by 92,000 to reach 522,334 in 2015 (in 2014 it was 430,102) due to the biennial effect of hosting IDEX (which generated 102,000 nights). Across all other events, there was a slight increase in visitor numbers which contributed to the balance of the overall increase.

For 2015, ADNEC’s activities supported 18,630 jobs within the emirate of Abu Dhabi, an increase of 28% over 2014 number (14,502)

Group highlights SMART ADNEC

ADNEC has undertaken this strategic initiative based on its vision to become the most successful exhibition, conference and events centre in the region. Like many other industries, the convention and exhibition industry – especially the MICE industry as a whole – is affected by the high levels of globalization and an increased awareness of cost and competition in a tougher economy. Expectations of visitors, exhibitors, advertisers, delegates, and organizers have changed; in many ways the always-connected, always-up-to-date mind-set brought on by mobile devices and new computing technologies. This has quickly rendered existing technology (or its absence) in convention and exhibition buildings old fashioned. Increased mobility and ease of doing business have shifted a significant portion of sales volume to lower cost locations, often built from the ground up on modern technology. Thus, having high-cost large-scale operations in rapidly aging prime location buildings is largely

becoming a major stumbling block in an industry once based on clout, authority, and government funding. Cost awareness, development of peripheral countries, and changing expectations of technological integration are now driving progressively mobile customers towards locations previously deemed remote. Considering all the above including the evaluation of the IT landscape, inputs received from business departments and the strategic direction for ADNEC based on the Abu Dhabi government’s e-governance strategy, the program intends to deliver the following: •

IT infrastructure enhancements to support the new features and functionalities

Integrated application platform to enhance the business processes

E-Services development and delivery

Key achievements Large video screens at ADNEC As part of the SMART initiative, one of the projects implemented in 2015 was installing five high-definition LED screens across the venue. The project enables ADNEC to earn additional revenues from the sale of advertising space, while also increasing the awareness of ADNEC services among the visitors and clients. Digital signage enhancements Numerous digital signage initiatives were deployed during the course of the year due to the large complaints regularly received from clients about lack of directional signage in the venue. This includes signage coming in from car parks, replacing manual notice boards with electronic screens across all Capital Suites and corporate meeting rooms and enhancements of the existing digital management system. Digital content management ADNEC undertook the re-installation of a new enhanced digital content management system which is hardware agnostic and works as an integrated system allowing integration with future technologies. This has significantly reduced the time and efforts for the content management team in publishing content. ADNEC ERP implementation ADNEC went live with its first ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) deployment and implementation on 1st January, 2015 and subsequently multiple enhancements were implemented during the course of the year. ADNEC implemented Microsoft Dynamics AX for all back-end support services for Finance, Procurement and Human Resources. Enhanced security set up for ADNEC With the ever increasing threat to computer systems and infrastructure, ADNEC IT implemented a robust security system that includes firewalls at core and perimeter levels and also an enhanced web security with one of the leading ISPs in the region. Additionally, to enhance its service quality, ADNEC IT worked with the ISP to build a redundant network. End user computing upgrades ADNEC IT significantly changed its end user computing model in 2015 by introducing new and enhanced models of hardware and handheld devices which has significantly increased end user satisfaction. Bring Your Own Device enhancement ADNEC IT recently introduced a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) initiative, allowing employees who require ADNEC e-mail access on their own devices outside office to be connected. This was possible due to the implementation of a MDM (mobile device management) system. This has enabled employees to have access to e-mail away from the office. ADNEC offers free Wi-Fi connectivity ADNEC launched complementary Wi-Fi service “ADNEC Free Wi-Fi to enable ADNEC visitors to connect to the internet via their mobile phones, tablets and computers and access email across ADNEC premises through automatic authentication. The service particularly benefits those requiring services such as business correspondence, news feeds, information alerts, light social media feeds, maps, and event calendar, among others.
