DIRECTOR’S NOTE In ancient Jewish folklore the Golem is the story of a man who fashions a creature out of clay to work for him. 1927’s Golem draws on this myth as a starting point and tells an original story, exploring man and machines.

Located in a futuristic yet throw-back, familiar world, where technology and the market economy have evolved to transcend the boundaries of human control, Golem has become a must have, indispensable ingredient for a better life. But its very existence, threatens the prospect of those who created it.

Like a giant graphic novel burst into life, 1927 invites audiences to take a step through the looking glass into a dark and fantastical tale of an extraordinary, ordinary man. Blending 1927’s synthesis of handmade animation, claymation, live music and performance Golem is a dystopian fable for the 21st century, which cleverly and satirically explores one of the great questions of the modern world – who or what is in control of our technologies?

1927 Founded in 2005 by Director, Writer and Performer Suzanne Andrade and Animator and Illustrator Paul Barritt, 1927 is a multiaward winning London based independent performance company that specialises in combining performance and live music with animation and film to create magical filmic performance. Central to 1927’s vision is the exploration of the relationship between live performer and animation in pursuit of creating dynamic and innovative live performance. 1927’s hybrid work combines spoken word, film, music, song,

movement and handmade animation, and aims to make these disparate elements work in a minutely choreographed harmony. The result is completely integrated and unique theatrical experiences - which inspire, inform, entertain and impress. Working across theatre, opera, music and dance, 1927 crosses borders and boundaries creatively and literally collaborating with partners and making work for audiences in London, the UK and across the globe.
