itting outside on a waterfront patio, with a cool drink in my hand while taking in the sun and the cool breezes coming off the lake, is pretty much my idea of paradise. Luckily for me, Central Texas is teeming with lakes, rivers and springs surrounded by lovely waterfront restaurants and entertainment venues where I can fully absorb one of my favorite things about my hometown. Now that it is officially summertime and temperatures are steadily rising, we are turning our attention to lake living, an idea that so many Austinites have carefully filed in their “future dreams” file. For those who are fortunate enough to own waterfront property, the serene luxury that nature provides characterizes an incomparable way of life. In order to catch a glimpse of this lifestyle, we visited our resident lake living expert. No one knows better how to wholly enjoy the lake than Beau Theriot, owner of Austin’s favorite lakeside jewel: The Oasis. His fine furnishings and antiques gallery, The Treasury, and the newly developed Comanche Canyon Ranch, the site of the exclusive Villa Montana gated community, makes Beau’s hilltop one of the hottest spots on the lake. As we toured his magnificent home designed specifically to take advantage of the spectacular views of the sunset over the lake, Beau shared with us his vision to make his 500-acre hilltop ranch, sometimes called “Beau’s Mountain,” a unique destination that invites everyone to enjoy one of the most beautiful natural settings you could ask for. But Lake Travis is just one of the many lovely bodies of water we are lucky enough to have at

Partnerships for Children:

Giving a hand to children and those who protect them Every year, Travis County receives more than 10,000 reports of abuse and neglect. This daunting reality is what drives Child Protective Services (CPS) caseworkers to the front line, fighting the war on child abuse and taking every measure necessary to ensure a child’s safety. Often times, this means removing children from their homes with nothing but the shirts on their backs. Because there is no state funding for basic necessities for children in transition, caseworkers are forced to locate supplies for the children rather than spending beneficial time with the families. Bridging the gap between limited government resources and the critical needs of Austin area children, Partnerships for Children enables the caseworker to provide a few things for the child, such as pajamas, a toothbrush, clothing and a comforting teddy bear. These things can help to make each child feel loved, cared for and safe, making a scary situation a little easier. Under the leadership of new Executive Director, Deborah Risovi, Partnerships for Children is working towards strong healthy communities that have the will and the resources to embrace and support families and their children—and keep them safe. “I am in a unique position where I am directly involved on the county end as chair of the Travis County Child Protective Services Board, as well as the individual caseworkers as Executive Director of Partnerships for Children,” says Deborah, “so I’m able to hear caseworkers’ stories and needs first hand.” Partnerships for Children is privately funded, depending on the support of grants from foundations and trusts, local churches and the generosity of individuals who want to help enhance the many programs that serve both caseworkers and children on an ongoing basis. There are countless ways to get involved, each with a personal and lasting impact on a local child in need. Here are just a few!

Rainbow Room The Rainbow Room is a resource center located within the CPS offices, where Coordinator, Brenda Jones, distributes new essential items such as clothing, formula, diapers and hygiene supplies – things we often take for granted -- to victims of abuse and neglect. The Rainbow Room also provides necessary items to extended family members when they suddenly find themselves parenting, such as space heaters, car seats and beds. CPS caseworkers have access to the Rainbow Room 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Holiday Wishes Many Travis County children have never known the thrill and anticipation of the Christmas holiday and the excitement that Christmas morning brings. The Holiday Wishes project is able to create Christmas memories for more than 3,500 children served by CPS through the generosity and support of our community. Adopt-A-Caseworker Adopt-A-Caseworker is a volunteer project, which helps to connect CPS caseworkers with community groups. The adopting group provides emotional support to the caseworkers, along with establishing a fund for the families and children on their caseload to provide those families with items that may not be available to them through the Rainbow Room on a regular basis. Providing help with some of these needs help our caseworkers establish a better relationship with parents, which encourages them to work on their parenting skills, child safety, and self-sufficiency.

get involved in their community by saving their change to support Partnerships for Children. Elementary Schools across the city participate in this month long change drive, which culminates in an event at the Austin Children’s Museum where children will receive the total they raised and will be able to see what they were able to buy for the children we serve. This helps them to understand the significance of the change they raised and how it will impact abused and neglected children in our community. PAL Support Program Partnerships for Children believes very strongly in preparing children that are about to age out of state care for life “without a net.” The Preparation for Adult Living (PAL) programs help ensure that these children have the best chance of success in their lives and the least chance of perpetuating the cycle of abuse. Making a difference is easy! Take a moment to find a few items from the Partnerships for Children wish list of items that are especially needed.

Wish list: • Boys & girls infant clothing • Developmental toys for children • Bilingual books & games • Dolls of all ethnic origin • Teenage boys & girls clothing • Boys & girls summer clothes • Coloring or activity books & crayons • Teen jewelry (silver), purses • Boy's watches and cologne • Twin Sheet Sets • Hairbrushes • Canned goods and dry foods • Summer Camp Scolarships • Little League Uniforms

your SCENE Cattle Baron’s Ball: Lil’ Buckaroos Party Lil’ Buckaroos Party The Cattle Baron’s Ball celebrated its Lil’ Buckaroos Party at Laguna Gloria to honor their youngest cancer patients with an event especially for them and their guests. Generously underwritten by The Austin Museum of Art and Cavender’s Boot City, the party was catered to children with fun music, food and activities. The children teamed up with local artists to paint and decorate “Horseshoes of Hope,” which were made in recognition of loved ones who have suffered or triumphed in the war against cancer. The horseshoes will be used to deck the actual Ball scheduled for May 31, 2008. This year’s Cattle Baron’s Ball, titled “Brandin’ a Cause; Ropin’ a Cure,” enables the local office of the American Cancer Society to provide patient services, research, education, and government advocacy to those afflicted with cancer and their loved ones. To date, the past events have raised nearly $1.6 million providing funds for local services and programs vital to the fight against cancer such as Hope Lodge, Reach to Recovery and Look Good…Feel Better. 16

real estate101 Should You Try to “Time the Market”? One problem with attempting to time your purchase to the business cycle is that no one can accurately predict the future. Another challenge is that interest rates are generally higher during a depressed market and income may not be keeping up. For that reason, fewer people can qualify for a home purchase than in more prosperous times. Why You Should Not Wait. This strategy generally works best for firsttime buyers. People who already have a home usually need to sell it in order to buy their next one. If a “move-up” buyer wants to buy a home during a depressed market, that means they usually have to sell one during the slow market, too. If a seller wants to sell his home to take advantage of a “hot” market when prices are fairly high, they generally have to buy their next home during that same hot market. It tends to equal out. Finally, the business cycle can change over time. Since 1983, we have had two fairly long expansions with only a slight recession in between each. You would not want to wait nine years to buy a home, would you? You could miss out on a substantial amount of appreciation by waiting, and end up paying much higher prices. BUILDING AN OASIS WITH BEAU THERIOT PHOTOGRAPHY BY L. ANDREW STERLING

hen Beau Theriot decided to build his home, he found one of the prettiest pieces of Texas hill country on which to lay a foundation. Sometimes referred to by locals as “Beau’s Mountain,” the 500-acre ranch he purchased in the late 1970’s has been nurtured and developed over the years into so much more than a personal retreat for Beau and his family. With the renowned Oasis restaurant, the newly established Villa Montaña community, and soon-to-be OASIS, TX shopping village, the Lake Travis hilltop is one of Central Texas’s chief destinations, not to mention one of the biggest labors of love one man can share.

Perched 450 feet above Lake Travis, Beau’s home is perfectly positioned to take in what he calls “the best show in town” – the spectacular sunset over the rolling hills and ever-changing lake waters. To fully take advantage of the nature’s grandeur, Beau built a long, narrow house with expansive windows, affording all of the bedrooms, living areas and even bathrooms with beautiful views.

“I’m not an architect, so I can do what my whims tell me to do,” Beau teased when he described his design and building process. Unrestricted by convention, he drafted his initial vision of the villa on a cocktail napkin, which holds a staggering likeness to the final result. He named it “Villa del Sol” because it faces due west and is in its glory as the sun heads toward the horizon, but its meaning runs deeper still. “When I was a little

boy, my father called me ‘Sunshine’ because of my particular love of the outdoors,” explained Beau. “Every time I say the name, I think of my father and my relationship with him. So, it is very meaningful to me because he was so much to admire.” Upon arrival, Beau’s guests are welcomed by an immense façade detailed with intricate stonework by his favorite artisans, including stone sunbursts etched around windows to remind everyone what makes the home so special. Distinctive touches like antique stained glass, gargoyles, statues and fountains are tucked into every corner, giving visitors new delights to discover at every turn. Beau’s incomparable collection of antiques, fine furnishings and master artworks (far too vast to be fully absorbed in one visit) is surely enough to leave you breathless. Harmoniously blending influences from all of his favorite places around the world, Beau included eye-popping touches in Mediterranean French Provincial, English, Moroccan and Mexican Colonial styles. The impeccable combination of different styles lends itself to individuality, something in which Beau takes great pride. “It just works better for me to design and create something that is off the cuff and a little bit different than anybody else’s.” It is important to note that the design choices are more than merely beautiful. Many are deeply sentimental. “My mom cut down an old pecan tree on the property in East Texas where she was born, and that’s what I used for the floors. It’s those things that really touch me and add a great bit of warmth to the house.” It is that warmth that allows Beau to maintain comforting and relaxing ambiance while being surrounded by so many fine, elegant things that could easily

A colonnade frames the terrace, which is a masterpiece of stone, marble and ironwork that comfortably seats more than 100 people. The railings were thoughtfully crafted with iron-rimmed glass panels to ensure unobscured views whether seated or standing. This irresistible setting borders on hypnotic as the lake air caresses your skin and serene clouds float slowly by.

With this kind of treasure in his hands, Beau felt compelled to share his enchanting vista with others. The guesthouse, a three-story tower called “the wine house,” and sometimes, “Rapunzel’s castle,” has a romantic, Old World charm. A wine tasting room, which is often used for intimate dinner parties, comprises the first floor. Boutique guest suites make up the second and third floors, each one specially decorated by Beau. A sincerely genuine person to the core, Beau wanted to share his hilltop with people beyond his friends and family. “I’ve always traveled a lot. I hadn’t found many places that were much more enchanting than this one. Fortunately, I was able to open The Oasis and create the ultimate getaway for folks who don’t have a lake house.” “I just wanted a little place on the hill so people could

Before I opened it in 1983, there was only Hippie Hollow and a few other parks, but there were no comfortable vantage points to sit and really absorb and relax and enjoy the breezes, the clouds, the sunsets and the moon glows.” Naturally, The Oasis, recognized as “the sunset capital of Texas,” became a local favorite and draws visitors from all over the world. It, too, has Beau’s artful design touch that adds to the dining experience. Newly re-vamped after a devastating fire in 2005, The Oasis is even bigger and better, with the familiar cascading decks and live music areas, plus new additions that can accommodate parties of up to 1,200. As if building a restaurant wasn’t enough, Beau invited outsiders to actually make part of his land their home when he developed his first residential neighborhood jewel -- Villa Montaña, a gated community that reflects a quiet ambiance of serenity, offering only 98 lots and custom homes with spectacular lake and sunset views, lush canyon vistas and uniquely intimate garden style villas. “I love this setting because it’s like an island nestled in

the midst of all this green,” said Beau. “You look out and see all green forever, but at the same time, it is the closest gated community on the lake to downtown Austin, so the city is there if you want it.” Taking every measure to create an enchanting community, Beau dotted the property with delightful features like bronze statues around unique planting and walking paths, koi fishponds and a grape arbor upon a scenic overlook where people can gather and visit with their neighbors. “I wanted to bring it above and beyond the ordinary.”

Beau’s next project in the works is a European inspired shopping village called OASIS, TX. Built alongside the Oasis on the cliff top, the village offers outdoor sculpture gardens created by native artists, waterfalls, grottos and scenic outlooks nestled among winding walkways with 30 one-of-a-kind local shops. Plans are in place to break ground this fall with construction to be completed in one year. “It will be a lot of fun to create it and see it come to life, just like it’s been wonderful to see the Oasis finally come back to life after the fire.” And Beau’s visions don’t show signs of slowing down. Pouring his whole heart and soul into each project he takes on, Beau continues to improve and develop his lakeside ranch. “What could be more wonderful than this part of the world? I just decided that I want this hilltop to be a really special place that everyone can enjoy, so I want to spend the rest of my life making it neater and neater.”

Warm up to a Vision of Water Ways make it happen. Don’t let your dreams drown. Linda Ginac of The Ginac Group, Inc. has more than 14 years experience in organizational development, people strategy and career development supporting individuals and corporations in developing, planning and managing a range of career management and worklife issues.

Summer has a way of biting us with the entrepreneurial bug, stirring in us the desire to walk away from the old and try something new. We find ourselves in a mental tug-o-war wondering if we should stay where we are even though we aren’t happy or if we should dive towards happiness. Rooted in the midst of our fabulous lakes, colored with premium waterfront residences and a promising water-friendly climate, Austin’s newest suburban areas provide a perfect example of success achieved by those bitten by the entrepreneurial bug. Some lakefront business owners abandoned corporate careers to fill their sails with a wind that has sailed them right into a rewarding life, a life they enjoy waking up to everyday. This contagious dive has dotted the shorelines with prosperous business ventures like yacht clubs, restaurants,

spas, and bed & breakfasts – all of which have contributed to Austin’s eclectic and attractive lifestyle.

Change is possible, people do it everyday. Why not you? Why not now?

If you dream of a life on the water, the decision to change your life is, many times, swimming in fear of the unknown. If you want your venture to be successful, before you jump off the deep end, you need a guide – one that will help you overcome your fear. Fear is encountered when you don’t have a plan, when you aren’t accountable to anyone, when you don’t have someone to support you and, most importantly, when you don’t have confidence in yourself. Overcome your fear – it’s baggage you don’t need. This summer, let the lakes and warm weather inspire your spirit and take time to examine what your idea of a fulfilled life might be. Your vision can come to true, but it’s up to you to

ince 1958, Goodwill Industries has been in the business of changing lives in Austin through the power of work, and in the fall of last year, it took a new approach when it launched Brand U (be unique, be creative, brand you), a shopping campaign that awarded a lucky Goodwill patron a complete personal shopping spree with a professional designer, along with a complete hair and make-up transformation. For the winners, few of whom ever dreamed of the luxury to dote on themselves, the promotion gave the opportunity to brand their own unique styles at a nominal cost, giving them the personal conďŹ dence to open doors in all areas of life.

John Rodriguez, winner of Brand U -- Home Edition, was able to completely transform his home with the help of Goodwill, Interior Motives designer Rubi Kaur and Your Address Magazine.

This year, Goodwill Industries, which will be celebrating 50 years of service in Central Texas, teamed up with Your Address Magazine and Interior Designer, Rubi Kaur, to take it a step further with Brand U – Home Edition, which aimed to improve lives by improving a living space with the use of furniture and accessories from Goodwill, Rubi’s design expertise, and some fabulous final touches from local sponsors. “When I was first approached about this project, I knew instantly that it was something I wanted to do,” said Rubi, principle designer of Interior Motives. “I love the city of Austin. It’s been really good to me, and I wanted to do something to

give back to my fellow Austinites.” After meeting this year’s winner, John Rodriguez, Rubi was eager to start the design process. The home was “rife with potential,” with a lovely stone fireplace and an eclectic mix of furnishings and accessories. The bold pallet of the interior walls encouraged Rubi to make a few bold choices of her own, knowing that John wasn’t afraid to make a statement to express his personality. The first step was repainting the walls – the easiest way, according to Rubi, to transform a room and your attitude. The eye-catching striped accent wall in the living area exemplifies the “splash of fun”

Interior Motives, an Austin based interior design firm. Rubi received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she triple majored in Business,

“John had such a true Austin personality and spirit, and I wanted the room to reflect that. This led me to begin with a wall that mimicked bead board. We painted it a neutral gold (to complement the cool and inviting Mediterranean blues we chose for the adjacent walls) and added four colors in strips of varying thickness to create an effect that really popped.” A few trips to Goodwill resulted in some amazing finds that made the room come together. Rubi’s favorite piece, a microfiber chair and ottoman, served as the perfect accent to the contemporary blue sofa selected to anchor the room. “It was actually a lot of fun shopping at Goodwill, and I was amazed at what I found! Of course, I usually work with new goods, and I was excited to work ‘out of the box’ on a project like this that inspires creativity.” Thanks to the generosity of local retailers who were inspired by the Brand U goal, we were able to make dramatic home improvements from the ground up. Rich hardwood flooring in the living room, gorgeous ceramic tiles in the kitchen, granite countertops, and a state-of-the-art range turned a humble home makeover project into a jaw-dropping before and after that one very lucky homeowner will enjoy for years to come.

Finance and Interior Design. As the lead designer for Interior Motives, Rubi has worked on several commercial and residential properties, including apartment complexes and model homes in both Austin and San Antonio, bringing out the best each property

stand too far away, either – if you do, you’ll be distracted by the other paintings and the museum guard.

I am going to purchase a flat screen television for my media room, but I don’t know how large it should be. I also don’t know whether to get one of the 1080P TVs that the guys at the electronics stores are pushing or a much less expensive 720P version. – Lisa J., Rollingwood Lisa, those are two of the most common questions I get asked. The answer depends on a few factors, including how big the TV is, how far away you sit when you watch, your eyesight, and, of course, the amount of money you spend. But first, a little background on resolutions. Have you ever been to an art museum? If you have, then you’ve probably seen paintings done using the pointillism technique. Instead of using broad brushstrokes, the artist dabs small dots of primary colors around the canvas and creates an image. To be “immersed” in the painting, don’t stand too close – you won’t be able to take in the whole picture. But don’t

your home |

A television is very much like a moving, electronic painting done using the pointillism technique. A 1080P TV provides just over 2 million dots, whereas a 720P TV has just under 1 million dots. Whether the picture on the television looks like a painting or a bunch of dots strung together depends – just as it does at the art museum – on viewing distance, the size of the dots, the size of the canvas, and your eyesight. Studies have shown that in order to be engrossed in a viewing experience, the angle made by the left side of the screen, the person’s eyes, and the right side of the screen should be around 36 degrees. For an immersive experience, a 26 degree viewing angle should be used. Just remember this simple formula: take your viewing distance in feet and multiply by nine to give the recommended screen size in

inches. Or multiply by 6.4 to give the minimum screen size. For example, if you sit 10 feet away, you should get between a 64-inch TV and a 90-inch projector screen. Of course, money and wall space usually conspire to make us go smaller, especially for casual, family room viewing. Assuming that you have 20-20 vision, you’ll notice the difference between 720 lines of resolution and 1080 lines of resolution with a TV that, in inches, is five times the number of feet from your main seating area. For instance, if you sit 10 feet away, you’ll see an improvement using a 1080P TV if it’s over 50 inches diagonal. In this example, if you’re getting a 60-inch TV, make sure it’s 1080P. If only a 46-incher will fit, save the money and buy a 720P set.

choosing the right CONTRACTOR Most people take for granted the comfort provided by their central air conditioner, heat pump or furnace until something goes wrong and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced. When this happens, you need a quality heating, ventilating and air conditioning/ refrigeration (HVACR) contractor who is knowledgeable, skilled and qualified to do the job. A Quality Contractor: Q Complies with state and local codes and regulations and carries the proper business and workers' compensation insurance Q Is prompt, courteous and provides fast, reliable service while attempting to perform service at your convenience Q Has the skill and knowledge to not only service your equipment, but if necessary, to design and install the right system for you Q Is up to date on the newest developments in

equipment, technology and design procedures in order to choose and install a system which will be the most efficient and most reliable system for you A heating, ventilating and air conditioning system is designed to suit your needs. Your contractor selects each part of the system individually so that everything works at top efficiency to provide the comfort you need. All the system components are matched (the furnace, the condensing unit, fans and blowers, air conditioning coil, the duct work) to produce a heating and cooling system that will work best for you. When Consulting an HVACR Contractor: Q Ask the contractor for references. Find out if other customers were satisfied.

Q Ask the contractor about his or her license. If a license is required in your area, ask for the license number. Q Ask if the contractor's technicians are NATE certification. NATE-certified technicians have proven their knowledge of modern HVACR systems. Q Ask the contractor if he or she is a member of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America. ACCA members have access to the latest technical information regarding HVAC systems. Through ACCA, contractors learn how to make quality an integral part of their company operations. Q Don't forget to ask about ENERGY STAR qualified heating and cooling equipment. For more information: Susan Lundgren, ACCA Austin 512.507.4826, www.accaaustin.org

Beautiful Pecan Trees stand proud beneath the Texan sun BY LOWER COLORADO RIVER AUTHORITY

C

entral Texas has a diverse cross-section of soils, terrain and plant life. For many people, it evokes images of white limestone, brilliant wildflowers and stately live oaks. However, drought and extreme heat make it difficult for most non-native plants to survive without supplemental water and soil improvement. Before making your plant selection, evaluate the size, texture, flowering patterns, light requirements and wildlife value of each tree. To assist you with your landscaping plans, the Lower Colorado River Authority has developed a list of some of the most popular native and adapted trees for the Central Texas area.

ask the EXPERT I read recently that you can acquire jewlery at a really good bargain in other countries. My husband and I will be going to Cancun this Summer on vacation and I’m considering on updating my wedding band. I’m nervous, however, about quality. Is it really possible to find authentic stones at bargain prices? - Kristin L., Hyde Park On more than one occasion I have been asked to do an appraisal for a purchase made while a client was on vacation. I have seen many different styles of jewelry and many different price ranges purchased on a cruise or in a resort area. Some have been beautiful and well made pieces but the vast majority were misrepresented. The hardest part of my profession is telling someone that a piece that they have purchased, been given or inherited is not what they believed. Many years ago, prior to the internet and the ever expanding global economy, it was possible to find truly good prices on many fine jewelry items including fine watches. But times have changed. Manufacturers now balance the pricing of the products they manufacture and you will find that one item in Europe, for example, costs the same at home. Moreover, the jewelry stores that have sprouted up in resort areas are there for a reason. They have a captive audience on holiday with money to burn and people are usually celebrating an event that they would like to commemorate with a beautiful piece of jewelry. The temptation is GREAT, I know, I have been there myself. I was actually offered the management position for several stores in Alaska that opened when the cruise ships arrived. I simply could not take the position. It not only required me to be away from my family for 6 months at a time but the pricing policies and types of merchandise I was required to carry I deemed below my standards. Please remember one simple rule when purchasing ANY piece of fine jewelry. It is always a good idea to purchase from someone you can get your hands on. This is not to say that if you find a modest piece that you like, it will remind you of your trip and it is something you will wear for a while and enjoy you shouldn’t purchase it. But be smart about a major purchase. The idea of spending over $300-$400 in another country from someone you do not know and will never see again should cause you to think twice. Remember!!!! You should know your Jeweler as well as you do your doctor, lawyer and accountant. Grissom just shrugs. “I listened.” The clarity we are seeking-whether it’s a career decision or a life transition or something deeper, like a sense of purpose-simply cannot be obtained by force of will. In fact, the harder we work at figuring it out, the more stuck or uncertain we become. Spinning our car wheels in the mud rarely gets us anywhere but deeper in the muck. It’s only when we pause to listen that we can hear what we’re trying to say. Because we already know the answer. You may not “know” it at an intellectual level, but you “know” it in your depths.

In an early episode of the TV drama, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” a kidnapped woman’s husband grows impatient with investigator Gil Grissom, who has been listening to the ransom message over and over and over again. Why are you sitting here listening to this tape for the 20th time, the frustrated husband asks, when you should be out there looking for my wife? “Sometimes, if you listen closely,” replies Grissom, the Zen master of forensic scientists, “you can hear a lot.” When I give keynote speeches on clarity or leadership or living a legendary life, I’m invariably asked the same question in one form or another: “But how do I get clear about (fill in the blank)?” I can sense the impatience in the questioner, much like the kidnapped woman’s husband, as well as his willfulness. What I’m really being asked is: “What can I do to (fill in the blank)?” But sometimes, as Grissom points out, listening trumps action.

Years back, when I began to realize that I needed to slow down if I wanted to connect with that place within myself, I was heartened by a bookmark emblazoned with this quote from Virginia Woolf: “It is in our idleness, in our dreams, that the submerged truth sometimes comes to the top.” Don’t you love the word, “idleness”? So quaint, so refreshing. Visions of mint juleps on the veranda at dusk. Unfortunately, our culture has literally been driven to distraction. There is no idleness (excuse me, “downtime”) permitted. No place to unplug. The more cell calls we receive, the more important we are. The more we’re juggling, the more accomplished we are. Now that the research results on multitasking are in, we know that the opposite is true. In fact, multitasking diminishes our capacity to learn and to achieve. There is no substitute for focused attention. If you want to get clear about what’s most im-

portant to you, then you need to slow down and tune out the world. You need to press “pause” long enough to hear what you have to say. Even Maria Shriver, first lady of California (Arnold’s wife), has learned this lesson. In her new book, Just Who Will You Be?, she pledges to give herself 10 minutes of silence a day. In my book, Clarity: How to Accomplish What Matters Most, the first of the five steps I outline is an injunction to do 15 minutes of nothing a day. Of everything I say in that book, these seven words attract the most response. It’s unthinkable to so many people, to devote a mere 15 minutes a day to themselves! Then there is the creative group I love. They try to get special dispensation for a “two-fer.” For example: Does my manicure count? Can I walk the dog, too? It’s only in this silent space of grace that we can hear what I call our “flutters.” That’s how I knew that I was called to make the move from teaching to coaching. I felt a kind of flutter in my body when I heard about this new kind of helping profession. It was quiet, it didn’t say anything, it was a wave of a flag. “Hey, pay attention to this.” Oftentimes we signal our deepest desires not in thoughts or even in emotions, but in physical sensations like the “flutters.” It takes 15 minutes of nothing a day to train ourselves to connect with those fleeting messages and to gently, kindly, and compassionately observe what they mean, without judgment. Once we’re used to attuning to our sensations, feelings, and thoughts during this 15-minute training interval, we can better attune to them in the rest of our everyday life. We can understand immediately that we really don’t want to say “yes” to that invitation, or that your recent job offer isn’t a good fit. If you listen closely, you can hear a lot.

| your home service resource directory Expert Tip: Quality Air What’s in the air you breathe? We have been neglecting one of the most important ingredients for healthy living indoors - the air we breathe. Indoor air pollution has been called one of our greatest environmental health problems. Two things compound this problem. One, we spend 90% of our time indoors and two we have a need to make homes and buildings more air tight and energy efficient. There are chemicals, airborne dust particles, pollens, pesticides, bacteria, dust mites, and mold spores that plague our homes and offices. Many people additionally pollute their own air with chemical-laden furnishings, hair spray, cigarette smoke, pet dander, kitty litter boxes, and household cleaning products.

“In an effort to improve the quality of the air in our home on a continuous basis, I decided to purchase a Fresh Air by EcoQuest and since then our family has enjoyed the benefits of breathing clean, fresh air.” Rolland Trolinger, Better Health Systems 512-965-2635, www.tryfreshair.com/betterhealthsystems
