ADAMS STATE UNIVERSITY PURPOSE STATEMENT
Adams State University’s driving purpose is to provide equitable access to education for all. We promote successful and engaged lives by caring for, connecting with, and challenging our students, campus, and community. As Colorado’s premier Hispanic Serving Institution, Adams State University draws on its rural location in the San Luis Valley, to serve and empower all students, especially those from historically underserved populations.
VISION STATEMENT
To become the university community of choice for diverse, historically underserved groups, and all who value quality education and inclusivity.
Adams State does not tolerate discrimination in any form. Go to adams.edu/ads for the full anti-discrimination statement.
President's Letter
Darin and I have been so rewarded as we’ve jumped in with both feet to help move the university forward, and it is with a happy, Spring heart I share the success we have seen at the state level in funding, the Adams Promise Scholarship, and the fun we have enjoyed creating short videos with student groups.
First, you can watch me and the presidents of Western and Fort Lewis do a backflip when our request for additional funding for our rural institutions was approved. And, for the second year in a row, an Adams State capital funding request was approved at the state level – look out 21st century, we are completely leveling the old Facilities Services building and replacing it with a modern structure, which our facilities service crews deserve.
The hours of work spent collecting data and creating the best, professional presentation and narrative to properly and compellingly tell the story of Adams State, the San Luis Valley, and rural universities was met with great success. The state budget committee recognizes the unique nature of Adams State and its Valley home, the need for rural higher education institutions and their importance in serving students whose needs are far different than those who will thrive at large, urban universities. Often our students need additional help to achieve success at the college level, and whether it is financially, academically, socially, or through team sports or clubs – Adams State meets them where they are and provides the means necessary to obtain their goals.
I give credit to the Adams State Financial Aid Office that worked diligently for months to design and implement the Adams Promise Scholarship – which allows Colorado residents residing in the lower half of the state to attend our university for free, if they meet eligibility requirements. I also want to credit our Public Relations and Marketing for rolling out a comprehensive marketing plan so that students and parents are aware, and take advantage, of this great opportunity.
On a completely different note, Darin and I have been having a blast creating videos with student groups, including the wrestlers who were headed to nationals, a light-hearted good luck to the women’s basketball team on their way to nationals, and a congratulations to our very impressive women’s indoor track and field team for securing a second consecutive national championship. That hard-earned honor brings the total of cross country and track and field national championships to 60; with 42 of those won by the amazing Coach Damon Martin. I also traveled back in time a bit to when I was a member of the Model United Nations, to record a video with the current Model United Nations Team before they left for France and the international competition. They are under the guidance of Dr. Mari Centeno, professor of political science, who has bestowed upon me the title of OG Model UN member, or Original Gangster.
What a privilege it is to be part of the Adams State community. We are doing great things.
Thank you,
David Tandberg, Ph.D., Adams State University President

MAGAZINE
The legendary John McDaniel, Ph.D., emeritus professor of history, inspired hundreds of students in and out of the classroom. His energy and enthusiasm for his interests, including Adams State, remained high until his death last May, 2023.
Front cover photos: as a young man in Texas; his self-proclaimed favorite photo teaching in the late 90s; at the McDaniel Hall dedication in 2012 (one of the few times Dr. McDaniel wasn’t wearing his favorite Dr. Pepper cap; and in his (then known as the ES Building) office, surrounded by books and dressed impeccably.
His dedication to learning and students will continue through his legacy. See the story on page 26.

Dear Adams State Alumni, Donors and Friends,
ADAMS STATE UNIVERSITY Donor Report
This annual donor edition of the AStater provides all of us a chance to reflect on the Foundation's many accomplishments. Aided by a healthy stock market at the close of 2023, the Foundation ended the year with invested assets totaling just over $36.5 million.
These assets support a multitude of on-going initiatives to benefit current students, including scholarships. For the current academic year (23-24), the Foundation awarded 187 scholarships, totaling over $1.336 million. Other dollars support the Porter Scholars and the McDaniel Fellows programs and related activities. Generous contributors established nine new scholarships and funded endowments supporting three program areas at Adams State: music, theater, and Model United Nations. The John E. McDaniel Foundation bequest, detailed elsewhere in this magazine, added over $4 million to support Adams State students.
Of special note, the Tandbergs established two scholarships (stories in the Winter 2023 AStater), one for students who are parents and one for students in our prison program, offered through Extended Studies. Adams State donors continue to strive to support the evolving needs of current students.
To engage an era of rising costs and diminishing taxpayer support, the Foundation is working with the Board of Trustees and the Adams State administration to enlarge its asset base through a number of initiatives to cultivate a culture of philanthropy. Please continue to do your part by giving through a special event such as the phonathon, through annual and monthly contributions, and by making Adams State part of your estate planning. Our splendid major gifts officer, Karen Wibrew, shall gladly assist you with estate planning. You can reach her at 719-587-7165 or kwibrew@adams.edu.
Thank you for your ongoing relationship with Adams State. Your continued support of our current students is a vital way of insuring a bright future for all of us.
Sincerely yours,
Edward R. Crowther, Ph. D. Emeritus Professor and President of the Foundation Board

Adams State Theatre premiers Knocking on the Devil’s Door
Isaac Anthony Sisneros, pictured above, wrote and directed the play, Knocking on the Devil’s Door, based on his experiences as a young adult. The Monte Vista native was inspired by a song to turn his story into a play and hopes his production will inspire others to follow their creative ideas.
Sisneros developed the semi-autobiographic play for personal reasons. “It’s based on how I grew up. What I saw, heard, and experienced as a teenager.” The song, Real Gangsta, by SPM, sparked the idea to write the play. “The character, Tony, is 18, and looking back on what happened in his life in the late 2000s. Here in the San Luis Valley, there are not a lot of stories, especially theatre productions, that address a young person’s experiences."
“My playwrighting and directing debut acknowledges where I am from, and I hope it inspires others to pursue their own creative endeavors while acknowledging where they are from.”
Sisneros enjoyed working with the actors and helping them bring their characters to life. Although he didn’t enroll at Adams State as a theatre major, a first-year-seminar professor encouraged him to be a part of the theatre community. “Associate Professor Gerke made me realize I could express my creativity as a technician, and over time I ingrained myself in the program.”

Adams State to build minor in GIS with new CDHE grant
Adams State received a Colorado Credential Pathways Technical Assistance Grant from the Colorado Department of Higher Education, according to Chayan Lahiri, Ph.D., assistant professor of geosciences and director of the Edward K. Ryan Geology Museum. He said the $10,779 grant will support development of an advanced course in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and an 18-credit minor and certificate program in GIS.
Dr. Ruthanne Orihuela, director of credential pathways and prior learning initiatives at CDHE, said, “The grant program will help ensure greater access to quality, short-term credentials that prepare Colorado’s learners and earners for careers in highvalue industries. Institutions are building pathways in behavioral health, information technology, education, and healthcare.”
Dr. Lahiri explained, “GIS is a database of information which can be used to make maps and perform spatial analysis on data. This technology is useful not only in the fields of geology and geography, but also in wildlife biology, ecology, archaeology, business, sociology, medicine, and pharmacy.”
For example, the appropriate GIS data could help produce maps to determine the percentage of San Luis Valley trees growing near bodies of water and query whether the trees prefer particular soil types, or to explore whether people who live closer to gyms have fewer health issues. “These are simple examples that we generally know the answers to. However, GIS programs can query and analyze much more complex problems,” he added.
Dr. Lahiri said the new course, Advanced GIS, will link Introduction to GIS and Cartography with Remote Sensing, completing an 18-credit minor in GIS, or a stand-alone, nondegree certificate in GIS. Drawing on current trends in GIS, the new course will culminate in an independent project or internship with the Bureau of Land Management. Dr. Lahiri is consulting with the National Park Service and BLM staff to assure the course is professionally relevant for students.
Introduction to GIS is offered each fall semester; Dr. Lahiri plans to launch Advanced GIS in the spring semester, 2025. Key to the Credential Pathways grant is the ability for those with demonstrable skills and experience to waive the prerequisite intro course.
$500,000 grant to enhance campus safety
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) awarded Adams State $500,000 to develop a Coordinated Community Response (CCR) team to address domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking on campus. To be funded over four years, the campus-wide project is entitled "JUNTOS: Initiative for Campus Safety and Cultural Responsiveness," according to Dr. Heidi Schneider, chair of the Sociology Department and Adams State’s Inclusive Excellence Liaison (IEL), principal investigator/grant administrator.
The OVW’s Grants to Enhance Culturally Specific Services for Victims of Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, and Stalking Program support community-based organizations that address victims’ critical needs in a manner that affirms their culture. Adams State’s diverse student body includes those who are Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, Black, Asian and Pacific Islanders, immigrants, first-generation college students, and LGBTQ+, as well as athletes and students with disabilities.
“Because we are a diverse nation with numerous affinity groups and many cultures, sexual violence prevention programs that are monocultural ignore the different ways in which people might learn, communicate, and respond, specifically regarding issues like sexual assault,” Schneider explained. “The best way to address sexual violence is to create a program that reflects and is responsive to all cultures.” As Inclusive Excellence Liaison, Schneider will oversee the project director.
“This grant will build Adams State’s capacity to develop programming that fits our student demographic. We are collaborating with community organizations to address concerns of Native Americans and immigrants – two of Adams State’s most vulnerable groups,” Schneider added. “Technical advisors will come to campus to conduct training and outreach to help us find additional resources for other marginalized groups.”
Alamosa’s Tu Casa, Inc., which serves victims of domestic and sexual violence, is the overarching victim service and education provider. The grant award includes $10,000 each year for Tu Casa, Inc., consulting services, including a Peer-Educator/ Student Outreach Coordinator. Tu Casa’s Chenoa Candy, an Adams State nursing major, will be the on-campus peer educator for 10 hours a week. Adams State will also coordinate with the SLV Immigrant Resource Center (IRC) and the SLV Area Health Education Center (SLV AHEC)/SLV Indian Center.
The project director will work with the technical advisors, external agencies, and various campus offices to develop the Coordinated Community Response Team, which will create a mandatory prevention/education program for all students, tailored to culturally specific student needs.

Darrell Meis Memorial Scholarship supports Alamosa High School athletes
The Darrell Meis Memorial Scholarship was established for Alamosa High School athletes attending Adams State University. Meis, a 1981 Adams State alumnus, passed away October 24, 2023, following a two-year battle with cancer. Many ASU alumni would be familiar with Darrell, who served as director of the campus Bookstore for 30 years.
“Darrell attacked his challenge with positivity, humor, and courageousness,” said his wife, Kim ‘82. They met as students at Adams State College and were married in 1981. The couple has four children, 14 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.
Darrell loved and excelled at all sports, but his true passion was football. After four years as a starting linebacker for Adams State College, he coached football at Alamosa High School and Ortega Middle School for 41 years. Therefore, the memorial scholarship provides $500 yearly and is renewable. First preference is for AHS football players; second preference is for AHS athletes in general. To qualify, applicants much have a GPA of 2.8 or better.
During Darrell’s senior year at ASC, the team won the RMAC League Championship and played in a post-season bowl game. They finished their season ranked #10 in the nation. His 1980 team was inducted into the ASU Hall of Fame in 2016.
McDowell
After earning his bachelor’s degree in marketing/ management, Darrell worked in the banking industry and then returned to ASC as the bookstore director in 1986. He worked closely with professors and students, employing many students in work study positions. He implemented and oversaw a convenience store, "The Grizzly Den," currently called the "Bear Necessities," and the "Claw Set" at the football stadium. He provided ASU gear and souvenirs available for purchase in the bookstore and at home game sites.
“He worked countless hours being the best he could be. He was a mentor, and a caring, listening person to all he associated with,” Kim said.
Her goal is to endow the scholarship with $10,000.
Donations are still being accepted in Darrell’s memory either online at https://www.adams.edu/foundation/online-donation/ or by calling 719-587-7609.
Please indicate that the gift is made in memory of Darrell Meis.
Edson Endowment to support Music Department
Inspired by the impressive achievements of Adams State University’s Music Department, alumna Edith Edson recently created the McDowell Edson Friends of Music Endowment to provide unrestricted support for the department. The $10,000 endowment may be used for equipment, instruments, transportation, and other department needs. The endowment is named for Edson and her mother, Josephine McDowell.
In addition to earning her master’s in education from Adams State in 1986, Edson took a course in archaeo astronomy that featured a field trip to Chaco Canyon.
“This experience inspired me to write a children’s book about the lunar standstill and how indigenous people could predict its reoccurrence every 18.6 years,” Eldon explained. Her book, Brother Eagle – a Chimney Rock Experience, follows an Indigenous Pueblo boy who makes a pilgrimage from present day Chaco Canyon in New Mexico to Chimney Rock in Colorado to view the moonrise between Chimney Rock and Companion Rock.

New John E. McDaniel Foundation supports student scholarships and internships
In December 2023, the Adams State University Foundation established the John E. McDaniel Foundation, a special fund endowed by the remaining assets of the John E. McDaniel Living Trust. The initial fund balance was $4,160,442.44 – the second largest single gift to the Foundation ever. This additional sum brings the total dollars contributed by McDaniel to $5,252,994.51. The revenue generated by the Foundation supports the McDaniel Scholarship Program and the McDaniel Fellows Program, both managed by the Adams State University Foundation.
A legendary professor, McDaniel joined the Adams State faculty in 1967 and remained excited about history, politics, and teaching his students for the next 40 years. Retiring as Professor Emeritus of History in 2007, he died May 2, 2023. The John E. McDaniel Foundation represents his stated wishes for the disposition of his assets: “for the benefit of students at Adams State University,” according to Dr. Ed Crowther, who was trustee for the McDaniel Living Trust and is current President of the Adams State University Foundation.
“Three things stand out to me,” Crowther reflected. “First, John wanted to provide money for students to gain an
education. The McDaniel Foundation ensures that money will be available for students far into the future. Second, John was determined to give five million dollars to Adams State, an aspiration he had articulated in the 1990s and reiterated often in his last months and days. He did that. Finally, John lived a full life, with travel to the Metropolitan opera and foreign lands, but he was a disciplined saver and investor. He gave over one million dollars to Adams State while he was alive and then left a legacy of over four million dollars, derived largely from investment earnings from his salary and then from his pension as a college professor.”
Initially created in 1996, the McDaniel Scholarship program consists of 39 half-tuition scholarships named after McDaniel’s family, friends, and former students. The scholarships support students across campus. During the 2023-24 academic year, awards supported students in Business, Counselor Education, English, History, Political Science, Mechanical Engineering, Music Education, Nursing, Psychology, and Teacher Education. Adams State President David Tandberg, Ph.D., credits the McDaniel Scholarship as the primary reason he remained in college and graduated.

The McDaniel Fellows Program was established in 2013 to fund community and campus employment opportunities for 12 students each year. McDaniel’s goal was to help students gain work-place skills and experience that would lead to their full-time employment upon graduation. The Adams State University Foundation provides a 100 percent match to McDaniel-generated dollars.
McDaniel earned a Ph.D. from the University of Texas and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Christian University. He was a Fulbright Scholar and an officer in the US Air Force. From 1995 to 2007, he served as the Adams State Faculty Marshall. In 2012, the newly renovated Education and Social Sciences Building was dedicated as the John E. McDaniel Hall in his honor. In 2019, McDaniel was inducted into the Coleman Independent School District Hall of Fame. After his retirement, McDaniel joined the Adams State University Foundation, and was serving as vicepresident and chairing the nominating committee at the time of his death.

The McDaniel Collection includes some 260 volumes of the nearly 50,000 that comprised McDaniel’s personal library.
“This collection is a tribute to the mind and heart of a splendid professor and generous benefactor of Adams State University,” said Ed Crowther, Ph.D., president of the Foundation Board and emeritus professor of history. McDaniel joined the Adams State faculty in 1967 and remained excited about history, politics, and teaching his students for 40 years. He passed away May 2, 2023.
Crowther explained the collection is more a memorial than a research compendium. “These books were selected as representative of McDaniel’s various interests, including the history of the Gilded Age, the United States Presidency, the Kennedy Era, literature, and opera.”
The collection is housed on the first floor of McDaniel Hall, southeast side.

When Ted Morrison enrolled at Adams State in 1965, he had no idea that it was the beginning of a lifelong relationship. It was here that he met his beautiful wife Janet (Skip). Upon graduating in 1969, Janet and Ted were married, started a family, and launched successful careers—as a teacher and Physician’s Assistant, respectively. They went on to join the local business community, owning and operating the local Arby’s for 27 years. Even with their demanding schedules, their ties to Adams State remained close. Their dedication to Adams State athletics is legendary, earning them a number of recognitions, including the Billy Adams Award and several Grizzly Club honors.
Ever looking for ways to support their beloved Grizzlies, they launched the Annual SLV Arby’s Senior All-Star Basketball Games—a scholarship fundraiser to recruit student athletes to Adams State. Still, they wanted to do more. So they joined the Billy Adams Society by including Adams State University in their estate plans to support the Dream Endowment.
While we lost Janet in 2021, Ted tirelessly continues to lead the charge in fundraising for athletic scholarships. “We shared a dream—a dream to see at least one full-ride scholarship for student athletes in each sport. It’s a big goal, but an important one.
That’s why we started the Dream Endowment. We wanted to give back to the University that gave us so much. I hope others will join us in the Dream Campaign, either by making gifts to the Dream Endowment or by establishing an athletics scholarship of their own,“ said Ted.
To learn more about the Dream Campaign and how you can make a gift to the Dream Endowment or establish your own endowed athletics scholarship, please contact Karen A. Wibrew at 719-587-7165 or kwibrew@adams.edu.

Trujillo brings wealth of experience to BOT
Colorado Governor Jared Polis appointed Anne Trujillo, Littleton, Colo., to the Adams State University Board of Trustees. Trujillo’s term began January 1, 2024, and will end December 31, 2027. The position was vacated when Michele Lueck’s term ended in 2023.
An alumna of the University of Colorado, Boulder, Trujillo sees Adams State as a perfect place for providing opportunities, which compliments her belief in opening doors for all Coloradans, especially those for whom higher education has not been a consideration or an option. “This is personal to me. I am a first-generation college student and remember well what it was like to navigate the higher ed system on my own.”
As the newest BOT member, Trujillo will rely on her experience as a journalist to observe and listen at the beginning of her term. “I'm excited to work with President Tandberg and the rest of the team who are deeply committed to helping students succeed. I look forward to meeting faculty, staff and students, and getting to know the campus and those who make it such an inviting place.”
As a Latina and longtime Coloradan, Trujillo appreciates Adams State’s distinction as a Hispanic Serving Institution. “I don't think enough people know how meaningful that designation is to families who are looking for a welcoming environment and a place to kickstart a new phase in life, for themselves and their families.”
Trujillo has experience working with urban and rural students through her volunteer work with the Denver Scholarship Foundation, providing scholarships to first generation families, and the Nathan Yip Foundation, focused on providing assistance to teachers in rural districts.
I have learned the importance of making personal connections to help people chart their course in life. That's where I see my goals aligning with those of Adams State University, and I am honored to be a part of the Board of Trustees.”
The Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center invited community members to campus, Saturday, March 30, for the Rio Grande State of the Basin Symposium. The theme was "perspectives on historical challenges" with keynote speaker, David Robbins, pictured right.

Great Alumni Stories
Adams State is tradition for valley family
With roots in the San Luis Valley that go back four generations, Tami (Huffaker) Valentine’s family has three strong traditions: education, ranching, and Adams State University. She and her husband, Aaron ’00, ’03, have four children currently enrolled, and they, their parents, and siblings are all Adams State alumni. Until the latest generation, all have become educators.
The Adams State tradition began with Tami and Aaron’s parents: Kirt and Cynthia Valentine, both Class of 1967, and Ann ’70, ’88 and Kelvin Huffaker.
“My dad didn’t get to finish college, so he was determined we all would,” Tami explained. The extended family claims a total of 25 degrees from Adams State.
Tami earned a degree in English education with a minor in music in 2000, later went into nursing, and earned her master’s in counselor education in 2011. She recently opened a private counseling practice, after several years working for Valley-Wide Health Services. Aaron teaches second grade in the North Conejos School District. Tami noted it was a family affair when she and Aaron graduated from Adams State in 2000, with one of her brothers and two of Aaron’s sisters also completing their degrees. All became public educators. Both sides of the family continue to ranch in Conejos County, and the teaching schedule facilitates that. Tami and her brothers began their own ranching operation while in college, and now her sons and daughters are building a herd of their own, as well.
“If we had gone away for college, we would have had to postpone that. Having Adams State in the valley is a big deal. Being close to home is important to us. Our kids want to stay in the valley,” Tami added. They raise cattle and quarter horses. “We still do everything on horseback. My kids and their cousins are who the neighbors call if there’s a wild cow loose.”
All of Tami and Aaron’s children followed the family path to Adams State. They include Peyton, an English major; Josh, an agribusiness major; Elizabeth, an accounting major, and Addison, an elementary education major. Their cousin Torissa Huffaker is also enrolled, majoring in nursing.

Bill Tite, M.F.A., assistant professor of art and design; and Inclusive Excellence Liaison Heidi Schneider, Ph.D., associate professor and Department of Sociology chair; and Black Student Union Student President Rudy-Criss Bukassa, collaborated to create a mural emulating the Black Arts Movement, of the mid-1960s to the mid1970s.
Tite photographed students and integrated them into the mural design influenced by a Barbara Jones-Hogu painting, Relate to Your Heritage, 1971. Art students, guided by Mary Wilhelm, M.F.A., assistant professor of art, expect to complete the mural by April. Dr. Schneider received financial assistance from an Adams State alumnus to create the mural. School of Humanities and Social Sciences Director and Chair of the Psychology Department, Colleen Schaffner, Ph.D., approved the location of the mural on the third floor of McDaniel Hall.
