LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Cut Wade a Break Dear Johnny Hildo,

I am one of your fans, one of many I'm quite sure. Your articles are well-written and echo my sentiments almost all the time. Although a "Water-villian' at the moment, I am a life-long Toledoan, my father grew up on Avondale & Hawley, a house where my great-grandfather raised his 12 children. He purchased that house in 1895 at age 25. This is not to say I am unique or have any more claims on Toledo than someone who arrived yesterday, only that I have love and concern for the City as it is a part of me, and I of it. I have to take exception with your accusation of Wade Kapszukiewicz's 'looting' the rainy day fund. As you state "It is intended as a cushion for a sudden, unexpected budget shortfall, to allow the City to meet its financial obligations in case of unforeseen emergency." The pandemic has negatively impacted the City's finances in almost every aspect. Can it rain any harder? I don't think so. Cut Wade a break. Concern over the possibility of the bond rating slipping is akin to a former president's argument that wearing a face mask in "not a good look."

O D E L O T

Keep up the good work. Diane Durbin, Waterville

Offensive...and ill-informed Could someone help Johnny Hildo learn that “retirees,” or other people older than him, generally have years or decades of learning, experience and perspective that he clearly lacks. Younger doesn’t necessarily mean better. And younger people’s ideas are often ideas that the “retirees” have already seen come and go, and/or crash and burn. He was quite adamant, writing against older council members, advocating for more youth and inexperience, and his column came off as just offensive...and ill-informed. Kathleen Schaus Via email

CITY POLITICS The greatest Best of City Politics By Johnny Hildo Let’s be honest. This has been a year like no other in City Politics. Nevertheless, we decided to join the “Best of ” theme and sort through the carnage of twenty twenty and come up with a list of our own. Some thought it couldn’t be done. Damn the detractors. Full speed ahead! Our judgment impeccable, our opinions unimpeachable, ladeez and gemmelmen, we give you, The Hildy Awards twenty twenty one! 1. The Longest Goodbye award goes to Toledo City Councilman Rob Ludeman. This guy has set the notion of term limits on its ear. First elected way back in the late Twentieth Century, Ludeman has used loopholes in the city charter and voter apathy to serve twenty six of the past twenty eight years on council. Or something like that. Frankly we’ve lost track. Term limits have finally caught him in his latest stint, and this is his last year in office. And good thing, too. He’s become the addled old man, sitting on his porch yapping at the young uns about the good ol’ days. But beware! He can be back in twenty twenty three! 2. Most Promising award goes to Mike Navarre. A long time public servant in law enforcement, Navarre is serving in his first elected role as LC Sheriff. And he is off to a promising start. His biggest challenge is how to fund the urgent need to build an updated County jail. He has come up with plans to streamline policing services to outlying townships while also raising more revenue in the process. Smart! Still, the proof will be in the pudding. 3. Best Newcomer: Katie Moline. The former Katie Bibish has prior experience with public service, coming from a family of public servants and having worked for the venerable Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur. In her first year in elected office, Moline has proved to be an unwavering voice for fiscal responsibility and accountability on Toledo City Council. Makes sense, since she’s a CPA. Her expertise is sorely needed, and we think she has a very bright political future ahead. Special mention to Vanice Williams, who got appointed to represent District Four to replace one of those federally indicted last year. That was a tough entree into public office, but she has served with thoughtfulness and grace. 4. Lifetime Achievement award: Brenda Hill. After a thirty-five year career as a public school teacher, Hill served on the Toledo Public School Board when that body was coming through a period of tumult and

www.toledocitypaper.com

intrigue. She was then appointed to the LC Board of Elections after that group had become so dysfunctional that the Ohio Secretary of State cleared the deck. Through it all she has been a voice of clarity and reason. She leaves the Board of Elections in a much better place than she found it. 5. Most Pathetic: Younes “Tony” Dia. We won’t beat this dead horse much more than we already have, except to say, quit exploiting the tragic death of your heroic son, stop making excuses for your criminal past, and stay the heck out of City Politics. 6. Stay in Your Lane award: suburban electeds. Folks elected to office with tiny constituencies in far flung corners of the county regularly get the notion to run for countywide office. Think Laurie Brodie, failed candidate for LC Treasurer, or Pam Haynum, who got trounced for LC Recorder. Here’s a clue. If your base of support can fit in a thimble, don’t waste yer time. We thought about giving He Who Must Not Be Named a special mention here, but decided to let well enough alone.

Antique Store Thrift/Resale Store

Celebrating the Best of Toledo has been a pleasure and an honor for Toledo City Paper for over two decades. For the last 21 years, we have invited our loyal readers to vote for the Best of the Toledo area. When the ballots have been counted we have feted the winners and treated our fans to a party to commemorate the votes of our readers bestowing praise on area businesses and service providers. This year, ahem, things are a little different. . . . Unfortunately, there will be no party this year. When the coast is clear and the timing is safer, we will have an outdoor event to let us all get together and celebrate. For now, know that you,, our fans, readers and advertisers, are ALL THE BEST OF TOLEDO!

Since 1984, the professionals at Sew-N-Such have been bringing Toledoans’ favorite clothes back to life. Beyond doing top-shelf work, Cianci’s shops offered great customer service, leading to multiple awards over the years— including this one.

Holey Toledough’s Food Truck

A Guide to Moving Eats

Online map tracks the trucks By Jeff McGinnis With dozens of excellent local food trucks, it can be a challenge to keep track of where to find them. A new app aims to help with that. Kristie Reece— by day a crime analyst for the City of Toledo— has debuted her new side project: An interactive Food Truck Tracker Map. “The purpose of the map is to help customers, or potential customers, locate their favorite food trucks, and to discover new trucks that they don’t know exist,” Reece explains. “With the way things currently are, it can be really difficult to find a truck if you don’t already know the schedule of the one you’re looking for. Or maybe you want to get a cheeseburger, but you don’t know, for instance, that the Beastro Burger truck exists. The goal of this app is to collect all this information in one spot, so that it’s easily accessible.”

Toledo to Go

The map, which debuted online at the beginning of the year, is actually an offshoot of another project. In March, 2020, the Toledo to Go Facebook group created a web document giving area businesses a place to list their information, hoping to draw attention during the pandemic. Reece had been toying with the idea of creating a web map to accompany the document. “I (thought), while I’m at it, I should add this component for food trucks, because I really struggle trying to find them. I was on a mission to find Fat Man’s BBQ ribs but they didn’t have a Facebook page that said where they were. So struggles like that, trying to find my favorite food trucks, sparked the idea for the app.” Reece has worked on the solo project for a couple months now. Public interest has taken off since she announced the map’s existence on Facebook. “I suspect

www.toledocitypaper.com

Kristie Reece designed an interactive food truck tracker app in her free time. with the gained interest in the food truck side of things, I’m going to be working on it a lot more. Actually, right nopw, I’m expanding the site.”

419-724-PIES

ExploreToledo

Reece purchased the domain name ExploreToledo.com to host the map and information is growing as truck operators begin to get word about the map. Operators have provided feedback to her, which has led to streamlining ways to add future events. “Some of them already have events planned through the entire summer. So a part of this web buildup that I’m now working on is adding accounts so food truck owners can register— and it is all completely free. With a free account, they can put in their basic information,” she said. “Truck operators have full control over how their business is perceived in the app.”

Helping locals

Reece has added an additional section to the site for other area businesses. “I do want to expand off of what the initial idea was, to help all of our local businesses, local restaurants, local retailers, local boutiques,” she said. “Pretty much anything that’s a locallyowned business, I’m cool with it being on the site.” As food truck season gears up, Reece hopes her project will give area entrepreneurs a boost. “I think excitement will build as I collect more information. I have been directly messaging food truck operators to provide their schedules for the summer, so I can get those uploaded en masse.”

Discover the Secret

Toledo native creates online theater experience By Jeff McGinnis

Odd-o-Ts’

Zimmerman said that his company has wanted to get into interactive, immersive programming for a while now. “When the pandemic hit, the dream was still there, but actually afforded us a creative opportunity, because doing something that’s highly immersive really is all about the space.” Theater has been a part of Todd Zimmerman’s life since he was a baby, literally. “My mother and father used to be involved in the Village Players, the Toledo Rep, the Bedford Community Players. I was onstage beginning when I was nine-and-ahalf months old with them. (The love of theater) hit me at an early age,” Zimmerman said. Zimmerman left the city in 1994, almost literally running away to join the circus. After years working with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey, Zimmerman and his wife settled in Orlando, founding Odd-o-Ts’. They have been producing shows for theme parks since 2004.

www.toledocitypaper.com

MARSH PROMO CREDIT KIRK

The pandemic has hit theater professionals especially hard, and not just due to lack of a paycheck, Todd Zimmerman, a Toledo native and owner of Orlando-based Odd-o-Ts’ Entertainment, explained. “It really is about the applause and the connection with the audience. That’s what feeds our soul. So it was bad enough not getting a paycheck, but not having that outlet was rough as well. So we decided to take that passion for creating something immersive and for keeping our performers employed, and came up with The Secret Library.” The Secret Library, a virtual mystery experience, has audience members log onto a digital show where they can interact with live performers and try to solve a series of puzzles, all without ever leaving their homes. “You’re coming in to open the ‘secret library,’ which is a mystical place that houses all of humankind’s stories. It has been closed off to you, and through a series of puzzles and working with our performers, who we call hosts in the game, you can discover the gateway to the secret library.”

UT Black Theatre Ensemble goes Under the Sea

Out the window

Creating a project like The Secret Library has been a lot of trial and error. “We had a pretty tightly structured script that we turned around and threw out the window,” Zimmerman said with a laugh. “We thought we had a handle on it, and then we got into this new virtual space and found out that it’s not as easy as regular theater, where you have to walk onstage when you’re ready to talk, but rather you have to rely on turning on the camera at the right time.” In an effort to make the experience distinct from a typical Zoom call, Zimmerman’s team found a platform they can customize to create a “virtual mansion.” This allows players to move around in the space, engaging with different characters and making the game an amalgamation of a murder mystery and escape room. “The audience can drive the direction their game is played by being able to move around and to click on things and discover things on their own,” Zimmerman said.

An exciting version of a classic sci-fi novel by the University of Toledo Black Theatre Ensemble is available for online viewing. 20K Leagues Under the Sea was recorded in September by a group of student writers, directors and performers, and was showcased for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in January. The show reimagines Jules Verne’s novel as a metaphor for the fight against social injustice and oppression. Watch it now at vimeo.com/463957394

Loving Lavell at Funny Bone

Comedy fans can rejoice with the arrival of Lavell Crawford at the Funny Bone for a three-night stint March 19 through 21. Crawford has been steadily rising in the comic ranks over the past two decades, from his appearances on BET’s ComicView to his run as a finalist on the NBC series Last Comic Standing in 2007. He also made a big impression on viewers as Huell, bodyguard to Saul Goodman, in Breaking Bad. $37. 7 and 9:30pm, Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20. 6 and 8:30pm, Sunday, March 21. 6140 Levis Commons Blvd, Perrysburg. 419-931-3474. toledo. funnybone.com

Making a connection

The Secret Library has already begun to expand with new games available, including one based in Atlantis. What audiences really seem to love, though, is the chance to play and forge a bond with people through the process of playing. “We got some feedback from an audience member who said, ‘I forgot how much I just wanted to connect with people.’ Because of the puzzles and the characters that you’re talking to, it allows people to really become immersed, to really forget that they’re sitting in front of a camera and to make a real human connection.” For more information or to book an experience, visit secretlibrary.io.

Inspired by learning that both Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson had attended the Dempsey-Willard fight in 1919, Long’s book weaves an entertaining series of tales exploring how, when and why historical figures came here to visit. $24.95, University of Toledo Press.

ART TO HEART Glass Blowing in the Glass City Firenation Studio lights up Toledo By Jeff McGinnis

When Matt Paskiet was young, he would go to Cedar Point with his family, like many kids from Toledo. Unlike many kids from Toledo, though, his favorite stop wasn’t the roller coasters or the water park or even the arcade— it was the glass blower’s shop in Frontier Town. “My family was doing something else down there, making candles or (riding rides). I would always end up (at the glass blower’s), and whenever we were leaving, they knew where to find me,” Paskiet said. That young obsession has never faded, and it has led to Paskiet making his mark on the Glass City art scene with Firenation Glass Studio and Art Gallery on Front St. in Holland. The studio turns out breathtaking glass works in a variety of styles, from artistic pieces to custom awards and memorials— often with the ashes of a loved one mixed in with the glass. “It’s a place to find an eclectic mix of handmade items and custom work,” Paskiet said. “I have diverse offerings.”

Lighting the furnace

Paskiet first began studying glassblowing in 1993 with a course at the Toledo Museum of Art. The responsibilities of “real life” would intervene before he could follow his dreams in earnest, however. “I had a well-paying construction job, I was making good money as a project manager, and I just decided I needed something different. So I just packed up my stuff and moved to Seattle, and started knocking on doors.” He was hired at the Boathouse in Seattle, the studio of Dale Chihuly— one of the world’s most famous glass blowers— and studied at the Pilchuck Glass School. After years of refining his skills, Paskiet returned to Toledo in 2002, opening Firenation soon after. “I think Firenation came because people believed in me. And their belief in me let me believe in myself. Because I think they saw in me that the potential was there,” Paskiet said.

An old-fashioned spot

Longtime Toledo residents will recognize Firenation’s location as the site of the former Springfield Hardware store. The space is divided in two, with a storefront featuring a variety of glass works out front and a full studio in back. The studio is similarly divided into the Hot Shop, where the glass is blown, and the Cold Shop, where the resulting works are buffed and polished.

Matt Paskiet creating a handblown glass sculpture named “Murrini Madness.” “If a glass blower had a nickel for every time somebody asked them if they made something, they wouldn’t have to blow glass,” he said.

“It’s like an old-school place,” Paskiet said. “You go in for customer service— people ask you how you’re doing, ask you how they can help you. We’ll gift wrap your stuff for you. It’s an old-fashioned spot where you can go and feel welcomed.” Usually Paskiet welcomes visitors into the Hot Shop to watch the process as well as for workshops, but COVID-19 has put a hold on that. The pandemic has naturally been a challenge for an independent studio like Firenation. “I had shut down completely— furnace off, everything, doors basically shut. Luckily, I was able to scrape through and this holiday season has been a shot in the arm.”

An upcoming milestone

Paskiet is hoping to hold an open house in June to celebrate his 19th anniversary— a milestone that he never would have believed his little studio could reach. “The first five years, I didn’t make a nickel,” he said. “If you had told me 20 years ago, do you think you’d be still in business, or in business at all in 19 years, I’d have been like, ‘Ha! That’d be great if I was, but I wouldn’t expect it.’” Paskiet also works on other, more personal projects. One of his favorites is on display at Perrysburg Cancer Center. Dozens of glass birds fly in the entryway to the building, in a variety of colors representing cancer support ribbons. “Everybody who goes through their cancer treatment, when they leave, they get a little bird to take home with them, as a memorial of them fighting cancer and coming out. So that’s awesome to be part of.” 7166 Front St., Holland, OH, 419-866-6288 | firenation.com

Nicaragua native Mendoza makes Glass City home By Lila Waterfield Though Ivonne Mendoza was born in Managua, Nicaragua, nowhere feels more like home to her than Toledo, Ohio. “In Toledo I feel like, ‘Ah, I’m home.’” Mendoza’s family moved to the U.S. when she was a toddler, and settled in the Toledo area in 1997. Looking back, Ivonne acknowledges the impact the family has had on her views on volunteer-work and involvement in the community. During her senior year at BGSU, while finishing her Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Mendoza began interning at Lucas County’s Juvenile Justice Center. She realized that the County’s Justice Center was doing things differently, looking to approach kids and teens in a way that aligned with her own feelings.

Respectful interaction

“I’m not that whole ‘Respect me and I’ll respect you’. No, I’m gonna respect you upfront, day one. This is the standard that I’m setting, and hopefully, they (the youth that she deals with) adhere to it,” Mendoza said. She has continued this respectful attitude and interaction with clients, approaching her adult clients in her current job as a United States Pretrial and Probation Services Officer. Ivonne is very active in the Latino Alliance of Northwest Ohio and was instrumental in creating a sub-group of the Alliance, “the Young Latino Professionals of Toledo - YLPT for short. “ She urges people to learn about YLPT and consider joining. “This isn’t just for the Latino community. This is for Toledo as a whole! There are so many talented people; everyone should be invested and interested in helping them grow and making sure that they stay in Toledo.”

March 1 • March 31

One sentence to describe me: Just a Nicaraguan girl in Ohio doing my best for the City of Toledo! How long have you been involved with the Latino Alliance of Northwest Ohio? For the last 7 years. It was an older organization, which has been re-energized and built to what it is now... Any person in the community can be a member. They also have memberships for organizations. I also sit on the board of Sofia Quintero Arts and Culture Center. Accomplishments of the alliance? One of the biggest things that they’ve taken over is the Diamante Awards. The four major universities/colleges BGSU, UT, Lourdes, and Owens - give scholarships out to Latino students… here you have students receiving these accolades, these scholarships that are so important to their education and their future. How can people reach out and join YLPT? Our Facebook page is under the name Young Latino Professionals of Toledo. Or, you can just directly email the Alliance, and we will add you to the mailing list for updates. There are also the general Latino Alliance meetings every fourth Wednesday at 5:30 pm. (Meetings currently held online via Zoom.) A local Latino business that I want to give a shout out to: Lowrider Cafe (at 316 N Michigan), downtown right across from the main library. It’s a Mexican restaurant…really really authentic Mexican food…I always eat there!

ARIES (March 21-April 19): In late April of 1969, Cambridhgeshire, UK hosted the first-ever Thriplow Daffodil Weekend: a flower show highlighting 80 varieties of narcissus. In the intervening years, climate change has raised the average temperature 3.24 degrees Fahrenheit. So the flowers have been blooming progressively earlier each year, which has necessitated moving the festival back. The last pre-Covid show in 2019 was on March 23-24, a month earlier than the original. Let’s use this as a metaphor for shifting conditions in your world. I invite you to take an inventory of how your environment has been changing, and what you could do to ensure you’re adapting to new conditions.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Author Leo Buscaglia told us that among ancient Egyptians, two specific questions were key in evaluating whether a human life was well-lived. They were “Did you bring joy?” and “Did you find joy?” In accordance with your current astrological potentials, I’m inviting you to meditate on those queries. And if you discover there’s anything lacking in the joy you bring and the joy you find, now is a very favorable time to make corrections. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): At age 11, the future first President of the United States George Washington became the “owner” of ten slaves. A few years later he “bought” 15 more. By the time he was president, 123 men, women, and children were struggling in miserable bondage under his control. Finally, in his will, he authorized them to be freed after he and his wife died. Magnanimous? Hell, no. He should have freed those people decades earlier—or better yet, never “owned” them in the first place. Another Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin not only freed his slaves but became an abolitionist. By my count, at least 11 of the other Founding Fathers never owned slaves. Now here’s the lesson I’d like us to apply to your life right now: Don’t procrastinate in doing the right thing. Do it now. CANCER (June 21-July 22): During World War II, the Japanese island of kunoshima housed a factory that manufactured poison gas for use in chemical warfare against China. These days it is a tourist attraction famous for its thousands of feral but friendly bunnies. I’d love to see you initiate a comparable transmutation in the coming months, dear Cancerian: changing bad news into good news, twisted darkness into interesting light, soullessness into soulfulness. Now is a good time to ramp up your efforts. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “Scars speak for you,” writes author Gena Showalter. “They say you’re strong, and you’ve survived something that might have killed others.” In that spirit, dear Leo, and in accordance with astrological omens, I invite you to authorize your scars to express interesting truths about you in the coming weeks. Allow them to demonstrate how resilient you’ve been, and how well you’ve mastered the lessons that your past suffering has made available. Give your scars permission to be wildly eloquent about the transformations you’ve been so courageous in achieving. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): According to novelist Doris Lessing, “Everybody in the world is thinking: I wish there was just one other person I could really talk to, who could really understand me, who’d be kind to me.” She implied that hardly anyone ever gets such an experience—or that it’s so rare as to be always tugging on our minds, forever a source of unquenched longing. But I’m more optimistic than Lessing. In my view, the treasured exchange she describes is not so impossible. And I think it will especially possible for you in the coming weeks. I suspect you’re entering a grace period of being listened to, understood, and treated kindly. Here’s the catch: For best results, you should be forthright in seeking it out. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “How much has to be explored and discarded before reaching the naked flesh of feeling,” wrote composer Claude Debussy. In the coming weeks, I hope you’ll regard his words as an

March 1 • March 31

incitement to do everything you can to reach the naked flesh of your feelings. Your ideas are fine. Your rational mind is a blessing. But for the foreseeable future, what you need most is to deepen your relationship with your emotions. Study them, please. Encourage them to express themselves. Respect their messages as gifts, even if you don’t necessarily act upon them. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You may never wander out alone into a dark forest or camp all night on a remote beach or encounter a mountain lion as you climb to a glacier near the peak of a rugged mountain. But there will always be a primeval wilderness within you— uncivilized lands and untamed creatures and elemental forces that are beyond your rational understanding. That’s mostly a good thing! To be healthy and wise, you need to be in regular contact with raw nature, even if it’s just the kind that’s inside you. The only time it may be a hindrance is if you try to deny its existence, whereupon it may turn unruly and inimical. So don’t deny it! Especially now. (PS: To help carry out this assignment, try to remember the dreams you have at night. Keep a recorder or notebook and pen near your bed.) SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “What damages a person most,” wrote philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, “is to work, think, and feel without inner necessity, without any deep personal desire, without pleasure—as a mere automaton of duty.” Once a year, I think every one of us, including me, should meditate on that quote. Once a year, we should evaluate whether we are living according to our soul’s code; whether we’re following the path with heart; whether we’re doing what we came to earth to accomplish. In my astrological opinion, the next two weeks will be your special time to engage in this exploration. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): What are your edges, Capricorn? What aspects of your identity straddle two different categories? Which of your beliefs embrace seemingly opposed positions? In your relations with other people, what are the taboo subjects? Where are the boundaries that you can sometimes cross and other times can’t cross? I hope you’ll meditate on these questions in the coming weeks. In my astrological opinion, you’re primed to explore edges, deepen your relationship with your edges, and use your edges for healing and education and cultivating intimacy with your allies. As author Ali Smith says, “Edges are magic; there’s a kind of forbidden magic on the borders of things, always a ceremony of crossing over, even if we ignore it or are unaware of it.” AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): According to intermedia artist Sidney Pink, “The idea of divine inspiration and an aha moment is largely a fantasy.” What the hell is he talking about?! That’s fake news, in my view. In the course of my creative career, I’ve been blessed with thousands of divine inspirations and aha moments. But I do acknowledge that my breakthroughs have been made possible by “hard work and unwavering dedication,” which Sidney Pink extols. Now here’s the climax of your oracle: You Aquarians are in a phase when you should be doing the hard work and unwavering dedication that will pave the way for divine inspirations and aha moments later this year. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): For you Pisceans, March is Love Yourself Bigger and Better and Bolder Month. To prepare you for this festival, I’m providing two inspirational quotes. 1. “If you aren’t good at loving yourself, you will have a difficult time loving anyone, since you’ll resent the time and energy you give another person that you aren’t even giving to yourself.” —Barbara De Angelis 2. “Loving yourself does not mean being self-absorbed or narcissistic, or disregarding others. Rather it means welcoming yourself as the most honored guest in your own heart, a guest worthy of respect, a lovable companion.” — Margo Anand

Do you feel comfortable extending a warm welcome to everyone, even and especially guests who find themselves solo? Does striking conversation feel as natural as breathing? Are you comfortable inviting guests to events, dinners, wine tastings, that you just know they will enjoy? Can you create a list of ideas that promote and utilize a classic and dignified physical facility? Are you excited by creating new initiatives guests will love?

Working as a member of a team to enhance the guest experience is beneficial and expected. The facility has a variety of offerings for both older and younger adults, as well as children and families. The offerings include dining and events as well as other social activities. This position is designed to be outward facing, with opportunities to reach out to the community to attract participation and to act as an ambassador for the facility.
