I

first fell in love with Rome from the back of a scooter. Not from a Vespa; that would have been much too easy. Instead, it was from a broken-down, 30-year-old Honda Bali. Each time the rickety wheels hit a pothole, my whole body jolted. Exhaust free-flowed out of the back.

Romantic? Not at first, but whizzing around the Colosseum, flying past the Forum, whisking through the traffic whorl of Piazza Venezia, somewhere between the adrenaline and the beauty, I forgot the bruises blooming on my backside. The Bali is long gone – it sputtered its last breath on a side street off Via Nazionale – but those first memories of experiencing Rome from the scooter’s peeling seat remain.

Few modes of transport are as made for Rome as the motorino. For those who live here, of course, a scooter is simply the most convenient way to get around. Unencumbered by a car’s size (or noticeability to law enforcement), you can duck and dive your way through the city’s intractable traffic. You can whizz down streets so narrow that the city uses special transport – half-sized, electric buses – just to access them. And you can almost always find parking, an important perk in a city mostly built before the invention of cars.

FCO But convenience is only part of the story. At a rally of Vespa Club Roma one Sunday in October, I meet Massimo Boresta, one of more than 50 enthusiasts – or vespisti – who have driven their vintage scooters here from all over the city.

We’re standing besides a rainbow row of vintage Vespas, ranging from a babyblue model from 1980 (the only year, the owner tells me, that they made this model in this colour), to a seductively shiny silver number from the 60s. While they are collectibles, the owners still use them all the time. ‘I take my Vespa in the morning to go to the office,’ Massimo tells me. ‘And every day I pass centuries of history. I see the Colosseum, the Forum, the ruins…’

Nunzio Bonanno, the Vespa club’s official historian, breaks in. ‘Yes, that’s Rome!’ he says excitedly. He asks if I’ve seen Nanni Moretti’s film Caro Diario (Dear Diary). The opening scene, which features ten minutes of the protagonist on his scooter, is, Nunzio says, a ‘beautiful illustration’ of the thrill you get just riding through the city.

‘Rome is beautiful,’ adds another of the vespisti, Gianfranco Cardelli. ‘But on a Vespa? Even more so.’

I’ve never heard anyone sound quite so excited about a daily commute as Massimo, Nunzio and Gianfranco. And with good reason. Glimpsing St Peter’s Basilica through a bus window is one thing, but speeding toward the Vatican with the wind fluttering your cheeks – crossing the Tiber River, Castel Sant’Angelo looming on your right, turning onto Mussolini’s Via della Conciliazione – is unlike anything else.

Sightseeing aside, the side streets are where a scooter comes into its own.

Bobbling down winding, cobblestoned lanes, you never know what you’ll encounter… A businessman whose scooter is as beat-up as his shoes are as impeccable, shooting out of an alleyway. A glossy-haired girl on a bicycle, meandering sans helmet.

On a scooter, you’re not just an observer of the panorama that is Rome, you are a participant. As such, there are some rules to be aware of. Chief among them: In the jungle of Rome’s traffic, police cars and ambulances rule. Everyone scatters out of the way in their presence.

EAT Tucked onto a cobblestoned side street not far from Piazza Navona, La Matricianella is one of the best authentic trattorias in the city centre. Here’s where to get your fill of cucina romana with a bucatini all’amatriciana, saltimbocca, or, for the adventurous, pajata (cooked intestines).

Now, if some‬‬‫‪one asks me what I regret in life, it’s not‬‬ ‫‪getting a motorino the first day I arrived‬‬ ‫’‪in Rome.‬‬
