Alexandria may seem a world away, but it’s remarkably accessible. Minutes from Reagan National Airport, the city claims an Amtrak station, four Metrorail stops and water taxi service from National Harbor and Georgetown. Major roads and bike paths lead to the city, where 16 Capital Bikeshare stations provide shiny red cycles for renting. The free (and low-emission) King Street Trolley runs day and night, making 20 stops along the main drag.

Alexandria has been a shopping destination since the 1700s, when the port city served as the region’s commercial hub. And the King Street corridor, with its free trolley and seasonal markets, festivals and fairs, is still home to “some of the best stores and galleries in the [D.C.] region” (Wall Street Journal).

Home decor shops forego cookie-cutter design and instead showcase the city’s long tradition of craftsmanship. See why The Washington Post named Old Town a home design destination: The Hour Cocktail Collection stocks cool, vintage barware; Red Barn Mercantile holds antique textiles, picture frames and furnishings; and Ten Thousand Villages gives Alexandria its name as a Fair Trade Town with responsibly sourced gifts from around the world. Decorium is a top spot for classic furniture, while Antique Guild offers older treasures.

Fashion hounds find contemporary Americanmade clothing at Imagine Artwear, on-trend styles for all seasons at Current Boutique, sterling silver jewelry at Silver Parrot, workout wears at lululemon and boho-chic apparel at Anthropologie.

OFF KING STREET

On side streets, historic sites convey stories of Alexandria’s past, from colonial times through the Civil War. Carlyle House was the mansion of a city co-founder before it became a British army headquarters, and Gadsby’s Tavern Museum was a favorite haunt of the nation’s founding fathers. From 1796 until 1933, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum was a family business serving customers like Martha Washington, and today it retains more than 8,000 early medical care items.

Fans of performing arts flock to MetroStage for “Off-Broadway on the River’s Edge” and to the Little Theatre of Alexandria—the area’s oldest continuously operating community stage— for musicals, comedies and dramas. Shoppers with international taste stop at St. George Gallery, where the Clintons have browsed collections of handwoven textiles, paintings and crafts from Ethiopia. Find seasonal décor, collectibles and toys at Christmas Attic and an impressive supply of kitchen utensils, cookbooks and bakeware at La Cuisine. With its chic décor, fashion and lifestyle boutique Coco Blanca evokes the feel of a Parisian flea market, while King Street Shoe Hive reigns as outdoor dining the area’s top stop for brands like Tory Burch and Sam Edelman. Upscale consignment shop Diva fills its racks with brand-name styles.

In the mood for leisurely dining? This neighborhood boasts more than a few foodie spots. Award-wining bistro Bastille puts a contemporary spin on French classics, like moules frites and duck confit. Built as an actual fire station in 1883, Columbia Firehouse now operates as a contemporary bar and brasserie. Bilbo Baggins draws crowds with an extensive list of craft beer and global wines, while Extra Perks Coffee Shop and Cafe serves up traditional British fare like fish and chips and Cadbury candies. French and Basque dishes star at award-winning La Bergerie.

Alexandria sits on the banks of the Potomac River, with panoramic vistas of National Harbor, Maryland, and iconic D.C. sites like the Washington Monument.

The waterfront area bustles with street performers, musicians, boaters and diners, but it’s also a peaceful place for relaxation—with a view!

Head to the Waterfront Market & Café to take in the sights while dining on soups, Alexandria City Marina

salads, sandwiches, and sushi. On South Union Street, Virtue Feed & Grain draws rave reviews from The Washington Post, Esquire and Bon Appétit for its creative cocktails, high-end American comfort dishes and cozy charm. Annapolisborn newcomer Blackwell Hitch boasts an oyster bar and tasty twists on local seafood specialties.

Potomac Riverboat Company offers guided sightseeing cruises plus water

taxis between Alexandria, National Harbor and the National Mall. Back on land, the Mount Vernon Trail, nearly 18 miles long and a favorite among runners and cyclists, follows the river from George Washington’s famed estate to Theodore Roosevelt Island.

The waterfront also claims one of Alexandria’s cultural treasures: the free-to-visit Torpedo Factory Art Center.

True to its name, the center was built as a manufacturing site just after World War I, but today it stands as the largest collection of working artist studios in the United States. Watch artists in action, and see work from The Art League or recently excavated artifacts at the Alexandria Archaeology Museum—both headquartered here.

MOUNT VERNON AVENUE

Mount Vernon Avenue serves as the heart of the Del Ray neighborhood, where eclectic shops and signature events like Art on the Avenue add to the area’s artsy ambience. Stroll the street, and pop in shops like Kiskadee for

At Evening Star Café, chef Jim Jefford captures the spirit of the South through classic dishes (think shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles) given a touch of elegance. RT’s Restaurant, a fixture for more than 25 years, stands as the neighborhood spot for Creole and Cajun specialties like Jack Daniels-flavored shrimp. Kick back at St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub with coffee, tea or pastries from local vendors, and satiate your sweet tooth at Dairy Godmother Frozen Custard & Nostalgic Treats. For the “best mac and cheese in the U.S.” (Food & Wine), head to gourmet cheese boutique Cheesetique.

The kitchen at Del Ray’s gourmet burger joint Holy Cow delivers all-natural Angus beef and hand-cut fries with aioli dipping sauce. In a 1925 house, family-friendly Del Ray Café serves up local, organic fare with a French accent.

West End

The West End is Alexandria’s fastest-growing neighborhood and home to the city’s acclaimed craft brewery, Port City Brewing Company. Enjoy Tempo’s elegant take on French and northern Italian seafood and pasta, or for more casual fare, chow down on ribs, brisket or pork at Rockland’s Barbeque and Grilling Company.

West End is also home to Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site, the best preserved of the Union forts and batteries built to protect Washington, D.C., during the Civil War.

In the Carlyle neighborhood, explore the National Inventors Hall of Fame at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which USA Today hails as one of 10 “great places to be inspired by innovation,” or swing to live music at The Carlyle Club, an Art Deco supper club featuring old-fashioned entertainment.

Hungry diners head to Carlyle’s awardwinning Trademark Drink and Eat in The Westin Alexandria for pork chops, Chesapeake pot pie and vegan mushroom ravioli; for a casual dinner, savor pulled pork and skin-on potato salad at Sweet Fire Donna’s. Homemade desserts, mountains of sweet treats and friendly service abound at Artfully Chocolate Bistro & Wine Bar.

city history exemplifies the spectrum of the Black experience in the U.S. They were nurses, cooks, wood cutters and sailors who escaped slavery and fled to Union-controlled Alexandria during the Civil War. When they died, their bodies were laid to rest in the Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery. Now, 150 years after the first burial, a new memorial commemorates those 1,700 African Americans with bas reliefs and a bronze sculpture representing struggle and hope.

Other historic sites also are steeped in African American heritage, detailing an extraordinary journey of courage and resistance.

Originally a segregated library for African Americans, the Alexandria Black History Museum documents the local and national history and contributions of Black America. Uncover the city’s colorful past by treading the same cobblestoned paths as citizens did centuries ago.

Boston and Williamsburg, the tavern became an important political and social center, whose notable patrons included George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Robert E. Lee. ■ Walk up Cameron Street to George Washington’s Townhouse , 508 Cameron Street. This structure recreates a modest 18th-century dwelling originally built in 1769 by Washington to provide convenient quarters when business or inclement weather prevented his return to Mount Vernon.

■ Continue on Cameron, and cross over N. Washington Street. Christ Church , 118 N. Washington Street, was built in 1773 and is an excellent example of a small rectangular Georgian church. The three-story tower with belfry topped by a cupola was completed in 1818. George Washington played a part in building the church and was an original pewholder (number 60). Robert E. Lee was also a member of the congregation.

■ Turn left on N. Washington Street toward King Street, which turns into S. Washington.

The Lyceum, Alexandria’s History Museum sits at 201 S. Washington Street. Since its beginnings in 1839, the building has been used as a Civil War hospital, a private home, an office building and the nation’s first Bicentennial Center. Today, the Lyceum displays exhibits on Alexandria’s story through more than 1,500 historical objects.

■ Turn left on Prince Street, then right on S. Alfred Street. Friendship Firehouse , 107 S. Alfred Street, built in 1855, is the headquarters of the Friendship Fire Company, Alexandria’s first volunteer firefighting squad. The stories of those who protected Alexandria’s citizens from fire—an overwhelming concern in the days of mostly wooden buildings—are preserved in the Friendship Firehouse Museum.

BEGIN YOUR TOUR at the Alexandria Visitors Center at Ramsay House , 221 King Street at the corner of Fairfax Street, a recreation of the circa 1724 home of Scottish merchant and Alexandria co-founder William Ramsay.

■ Walk two blocks east on King Street toward the Potomac River to Union Street. Turn right onto Union and right onto Prince. Welcome to Captain’s Row, one of Alexandria’s oldest and most picturesque blocks with authentic cobblestones.

Sea captains or ship masters built many of these Federal houses at a time when Alexandria rivaled New York and Boston as a port of entry.

■ Continue up Prince Street to the 200 block, known as Gentry Row . On the corner of Prince and Lee, find the Athenaeum . Built in 1851, this antebellum Greek Revival building originally housed the Bank of the Old Dominion. Today, the Athenaeum is an art gallery and the home of the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association.

■ Turn right on S. Fairfax Street. Find the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum , 105-107 S. Fairfax Street, where Edward Stabler began his pharmacy business in 1792, serving customers like Martha Washington and Robert E. Lee. The family business operated continuously until

1933 when the Depression forced its closure.

Today, the museum exhibits herbal botanicals and medical equipment, much preserved in its original form.

■ Turn left onto King Street and right into Market Square. City Hall , 301 King Street, is home to Alexandria’s city government. Its structure was built in 1871 as a courthouse, atop a site first used as a market space frequented

by George Washington. Today, its steeple tower is a landmark on the Alexandria horizon, and the Farmers Market tradition continues each Saturday throughout the year.

■ Return to Fairfax Street, and turn left. Carlyle House , 121 N. Fairfax Street, was built in 1752 by wealthy Scottish merchant and city cofounder John Carlyle. This handsome stone mansion is an outstanding example of Colonial Georgian architecture.

They found a safe haven in Alexandria because of the Union occupation, but their large numbers resulted in a refugee crisis. In 1864, after hundreds had perished, the Superintendent of Contrabands ordered that a property on the southern edge of town, across from the Catholic cemetery, be confiscated for use as a cemetery.

NORTHWEST OF OLD TOWN LIES A COLORFUL ZONE WITH AN INDEPENDENT SPIRIT. Along Del Ray’s made-for-strolling Mount Vernon Avenue, eateries range from family-friendly pizzerias and barbeque restaurants to sophisticated spots devoted to cheese and gourmet chocolate confections. Instead of big-box names, there’s a neighborhood pharmacy and an old-fashioned variety store. When customers wander into boutiques for fashion, crafts or children’s goods, it’s often the owner who greets them. And each Saturday of the year, visitors and residents alike peruse the Del Ray Farmers Market, picking fresh and local produce from the growers themselves.

On the north side of Del Ray, the up-and-coming area of Arlandria has small shops and restaurants with an international flavor. Locals call the zone “Chirilagua” for the El Salvadoran village from which many of the residents emigrated. Also here, the Birchmere Music Hall has been booking the finest acts in blues, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll for more than 50 years.

Del Ray’s signature events contribute to the neighborhood’s artsy ambience.

Residents with dogs and strollers promenade along the main drag to celebrate the first Thursday of each month, May through September, with music, entertainment and dining specials.

Cultural festival Art on the Avenue features more than 300 artists every October, while Del Ray Artisans, an artists’ cooperative, anchors the creative community year-round.

Metrorail

The Metrorail system consists of six colorcoded rail lines: red, blue, green, orange, yellow and silver. Alexandria is serviced by four convenient Metrorail stations named for their closest streets: King St-Old Town (blue and yellow lines), Braddock Road (blue and yellow), Eisenhower Ave (yellow) and Van Dorn Street (blue). The minimum fare is $1.70, with small increases during rush hour.
