FOR THE CULTURE BUFFS… Enter a world of Love and Desire as the Tate Britain loans exclusive masterpieces from its unsurpassed collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings to the National Gallery of Australia and experience a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these masterpieces in Australia. The Gallery will also be unveiling Spirits of the Pumpkins Descended into the Heavens 2015, an immersive installation of endless reflection, yellow pumpkins and black dots by cult contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama.

Across the Lake, immerse yourself in ancient times at the Rome: City + Empire exhibition at the National Museum of Australia. It’s exclusive to Canberra, with artefacts from the British Museum. Delve into the life of the late Aussie actor Heath Ledger: A Life in Pictures at the National Film and Sound Archive. For culture of another kind, take in the roar of street machines at the annual Summernats car festival (3–6 January).

Front cover: Fuel up with a sweet treat just like @wanderworkrepeat did at Space Kitchen. Left: Explore the Australian National Botanic Gardens this summer.

Treat the family to a glamping experience these school holidays at Wildfest at Tidbinbilla.

SOMETHING FOR THE KIDS… There’s plenty to keep the kids amused these school holidays at our national attractions and beyond. If nature is calling, head out to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve for some glamping at Wildfest or drive up to Corin Forest for some fun on the Alpine Slide. The National Zoo & Aquarium is also great for letting the kids burn off some energy. Need to cool down? Head to historic Manuka Pool for a dip, or indoors to catch a show at the Canberra Theatre Centre.

VISITCANBERRA.COM.AU

FOR THE LOVERS OF SPORT… For a summer full of cricket, head along to Manuka Oval to catch the Men’s and Women’s Big Bash League matches or catch the Domain Test Match between Australia and Sri Lanka (1–5 February). Or if a walk among the golf greens is more for you, the ActewAGL Canberra Classic will see a field of 144 professional women compete for the championship trophy. From Super Rugby to basketball, there’s something for all sports spectators.

Hire a Go Boat to explore Lake Burley Griffin.

FOR THE FOODIES… Canberra’s markets go into overdrive in December with Handmade Markets, Old Bus Depot Markets and the Cellar Door Wine Market stocked up for the festive season. The ultimate foodie festival, the National Multicultural Festival in February is a must-do event. You can also explore the city’s cafes and restaurants—pick up a copy of the Canberra Visitor Guide from the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre for some suggestions.

…AND EXPLORE THE GREAT OUTDOORS Rise early and take to the skies in a hot-air balloon as the early morning sun fills the valley and lakes with soft morning light. Take advantage of the capital’s fabulous weather by hiring a bike or segway to tour around Lake Burley Griffin. Hire a Go Boat picnic boat, kayak or stand up paddle board to explore the Lake or do the

‘bridge to bridge’ walk around the inner basin, stopping off at attractions along the way. The MV Southern Cross and Lake Burley Griffin Cruises offer a more leisurely way to sightsee. Want to chill? Summer is the season for outdoor cinema. Catch latest releases, children’s movies and classic films in the beautiful surrounds of the Australian National Botanic Gardens’ Sunset Cinema or head along to the American Express Openair Cinemas at Patrick White Lawns (9 January–17 February).

Make the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre your one stop shop for all your booking, shopping and information needs. Head to Regatta Point, Barrine Drive to organise your short-break in Canberra.
