Hot Wedding Trends The Look Recent years have seen brides rush to recreate their version of a royal wedding or something straight off a Pinterest board. But as we greet 2017, it’s clear brides are much more interested in going down the aisle their own way. Couples today want a wedding that showcases who they are, that’s a fun experience for their guests and that won’t look or feel dated — ever. The Central Minnesota Wedding Association takes pride in sharing some key elements to this personal spin on romance and fun. Bright on. Metallics are surprisingly versatile. Depending on how and where you bring them into your celebration, they can be elegant, whimsical, ethereal or even very natural. (Think glitzy golds to pop out room decor at a black-tie wedding, copper lanterns at an outdoor reception or on a rustic tablescape.) No matter the venue or theme, designers say rose gold will show up on everything from rings to table linens. Even the food and drink get in on the trend, with shiny blush icings on desserts and rose-hued cocktails. One metallic that is on the wane, however, is silver. Hometown heroes. In a trend that’s referred to as “the new destination wedding,” couples are increasingly looking for ways to bring in elements of places that hold www.idoido.org - Select Your Chosen Category

15

special memories — no matter where the actual wedding is being held. For example, a couple who got engaged in Paris might bring in vintage street lamps to light the reception, have Edith Piaf songs playing during dinner and use bistro signage for the bar. The idea is that you can have guests feel like they’re anywhere imaginable including your alma mater — whatever spot is close to your heart — and enjoying little bits of those places that have brought you joy. Just dreamy. The key to setting a romantic mood? Ambience. Every couple wants to create a more romantic and intimate environment. Wedding lighting is the best — and simplest — way to establish both. Event designers say they’re using more pendant lights with bare “Edison” bulbs, chandeliers (both vintage and modern) and candelabras to cast a soft glow. Be seated. Couples are moving away from a reception layout based on large round tables, which has a tendency to feel too much like a conference event, and are instead opting for either very

16

long, rectangular tables or a mix of long tables surrounded by smaller square and round tables — all for a more intimate vibe. And lounge areas, complete with comfortable seating options, remain a crucial part of the cocktail and afterparty hours.

Barns remain a strong venue trend. A relaxed setting lets couples put their own spin on rustic chic. You can find it at the Rolling Ridge Wedding & Event Center in St. Joseph, Minnesota.

bouquets and centerpieces often include a mix of big and small blossoms in more than one color, and might use spiky flowers or fruiting vines to serve as exclamation points.

The Flowers The right mix of style and simplicity will be the cornerstone of fabulous wedding floral arrangements in 2017.

Tone-on-tone explosion. A concentrated cluster of one color lends a graphic impact to centerpieces. Ask your florist to choose three to five different flowers in the same shade — the slight color variations create an ombré effect. For an uber-romantic feel, stick to the opposite ends of the color spectrum — either pale or deeply saturated. to set the table for fun, pick a hyper-vivid neon or a playful sorbet shade.

Just picked. Arrangements that feature both whatever is in season and whatever is local are gaining traction. Sometimes couples request a “wild” look. What they’re after are freshly picked blooms. These free-form

Look, don’t eat! Everyone’s a foodie these days, so it’s no surprise that savvy couples are asking florists to include elements like coffee beans and fragrant herbs (say, mint or basil) into centerpieces and garlands. Petite

seasonal fruits and vegetables are another way to layer on color. Instead of Flowers imagine this. Potted trees, succulents, ferns, lavender sprigs and decorative leaves (such as magnolia, begonia) are no longer reserved for anchoring flower arrangements — these days they can become the focal point of the décor. Flowering plants and blooming branches (think flowering quince, crab apple or cherry blossom) also work well as creative centerpieces. And a budget-friendly elegant idea is to adorn bare branches with crepepaper flowers or sparkly jewels. Try this trend: Mix up your centerpieces. All of your tables just don’t have to look the same. Be creative and let your mind wander ….. see the Central Minnesota Wedding Association Décor and Rental professionals in this planner. ♥ Source: www.bridalguide.com/planning/thedetails/reception/wedding-trends

Venues & Catering written by:

Brit Haskins – CLASSIC HALL EVENT CENTER brit@classichallmn.com

Congratulations on your engagement! As you prepare your walk down the aisle, you and your fiancé will have a lot of excitement that will come your way. Whether your wedding is in 6 months or a year or two enjoy this time and make your wedding all about the two of you. One of the biggest decisions the two of you will have to make is where you want to host your wedding reception. The majority of venues are booked out 1 to 2 years, so you will you want to make this decision the top your priorities. While touring the different venues, you will want to make sure that you choose the one that best fits who the two of you are as a couple. Once you get the venue chosen, everything else will fall into place. Some things to figure out before you tour the different locations are your budget (make sure not to veer off of it), how many guests you plan on inviting, what time of year you plan on having your wedding and whether or not you are flexible on the date you have chosen for your wedding. By figuring all of those pieces out before hand it will help you narrow down your options and may even open up some new possibilities you haven’t thought of. There are multiple trends when it comes to choosing a venue for your wedding. Some of the more popular ones are Barn Weddings, Vineyard Weddings & Garden www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Reception Venues, Caterers or Rehearsal Dinners

Weddings. Weddings are also leaning to more of a natural and relaxed feel to them. Ceremonies at state parks and lakes are also becoming more popular than before. Depending on the location you choose, will also determine on whether or not you will need to find a caterer for your wedding. Most venues have an exclusive caterer that they use for their venue but in the case they don’t, the best way to find a caterer is through referrals from friends and family. By using referrals, you will also be able to find out if there were any bad experiences that people may have had. When calling the different caterers, check with them if they offer complimentary tastings. During the tasting is the best time to not only get to know the caterer, but the quality and display of the food. Once you get done with the tasting you should be able to tell if the caterer is the right fit for you. If not, do not feel obligated that you have to choose them. Besides the venue, catering will be the biggest part of your budget. Most of the caterers will present their pricing as “price per plate” or “price per guest”. If they present it this way to you, make sure to find out what fees they add on at the end. Most places will add on the sales tax, 24

service fee and a gratuity. In the end, the actual per-person cost may be a lot more than you originally thought. When it comes to catering, the trends are always changing. Some of the more popular ones that couples are going with are brunch style meals, fresh & organic,

made-to-order food bars, food trucks, beverage stations, non-traditional desserts and late night snacks. No matter if you’re meeting with the venue or the caterer make sure to ask questions, and always read the contracts before you sign anything. If you need to, take a couple days to really go through it before making your decision. ♼

Questions to ask the Venue: • Is my wedding date available? • How many events do you book in one day? • What kind of deposit is required? • Is there a cancellation policy? • Must I use vendors of your choosing? • Is the site handicap accessible? • What amenities come with the venue rental? • Who is responsible for setting up and tearing down the décor, and when will it be completed? • Who will be our point person before the wedding? The day of the wedding? • Are there hidden costs like a service charge, gratuity, cleaning fees or overtime charges?

Questions to ask the Caterer: • Is my wedding date available? • Will I need any special permits for my event? If so, will you handle obtaining them? • Will you provide a banquet manager to coordinate the meal service or an on-site coordinator who will run the entire event? If so, can we meet them before hand? • Is coffee and tea service included with the per-person meal charge? • How much do you charge for children’s meals? Vendor meals? • Do you do menu tastings? Is there an additional fee for this? • When will you need a final guest count? Finalize the menu? • How much of a deposit is needed? What is your cancellation policy? • Do you provide linens, glassware, plates and flatware? Are these included in the per-person cost? • What is your policy on clean up?

Fortunately, the right wedding photographer can gorgeously preserve the entire event’s happenings, the emotions, and the fun—forever! One perfect picture can instantly take you back to the happiest day of your life, and one perfect album can become your favorite coffee table book. When it comes to professional photography, most shutterbugs start out by shooting weddings. This can mean wading through a lot of prospective hires before you find the right fit for you. Below are simple tips for finding a photographer who will articulate the event exactly how you want to remember it. Start Searching Immediately So, you just got engaged—Congratulations! Now start looking for a wedding photographer. The truth is, the best professional photographers book their schedules a year in advance, so hiring someone is one of the first things you should do after you’ve set the date. However, if your plans call for an out-of-season wedding or a Sunday ceremony, there is a good chance your chosen photographer is available. Give yourself six months or more to find the photographer of your dreams if you’re having a more uniquely timed wedding. www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Photographers & Videographers

Tap Into Your Network Good wedding photographers have a reputation for success. They should be the easiest to find, but that doesn’t mean they’re the best for you. Start your search by crowdsourcing recommendations from friends and family who have planned weddings in the last few years, and ask your married friends if you can peruse their photo albums. Look to Facebook pages and the Central Minnesota Wedding Association’s (www.idoido.org) website for client reviews. The other professionals involved in your wedding day festivities will have worked with various photographers in the Central Minnesota area in the past. Ask for recommendations from your wedding planner, venue manager, caterer, baker, florist or limousine driver—it’s (literally) their business to have such contacts and be sure you check the Central Minnesota Wedding Association’s (www.idoido.org) website. Narrow Down Your Options Once you have a list of your top choice

photographers, take an in-depth look into their services to begin eliminating candidates that may not be a good fit. Determine which photographer will meet your budget as well as your specific needs. Consider how well they perform in different settings and environments. For

example, if you are throwing an outdoor or special venue wedding, it makes sense to find a photographer who is proficient at outdoor photography. Think about the emotional tone that you want your photos to express. Are you and your fiancé serious and traditional, or do you prefer a more light-hearted and playful theme? A talented photographer can listen to your vision and articulate it perfectly, so you should see tonal variation in their sample work. Conduct Your Interviews After narrowing your selection of wedding photographers, make appointments to interview the candidates. Likely, the photographer will have two or three wedding albums available to show. Make sure you see at least one album of an entire wedding, from start to finish, preferably something that is comparable to what your wedding will be like in physical setting and emotional tone. After examining all of the sample work closely, request to see another set of photographs from a recent wedding. This will enable you to see both his best work from the pre-selected albums and his average daily work. Some things to keep in mind: • Examine the basics of the pictures such as color, clarity, exposure, graininess and composition. • Determine the photographer’s style—do they shoot photos that are adventurous and artistic, or are they standard and ordinary? • Do the guests look natural or selfconscious? • Do the photos capture the emotional tone organically, or do the couple’s poses feel forced? Be sure to leave the interview knowing the highest vs. average quality of the photographer’s work, their visual style, and if they will adjust their style to your individual taste. Their willingness to work closely with you to satisfy you as a client

is key to producing an exceptional result, and a professional knows that. Gauge Their Professionalism While not all amateur photographers are created equal, the best way to guarantee that you will receive a quality wedding album is to hire a seasoned professional with a solid and varied background of nuptial experiences from which to draw. During your interview, find out how many weddings the photographer has shot over how many years. Remember, wedding photography is much different than any other type of photography; the pressure is high and the emotional energy is not suited for everyone.

Be sure to ask if the photographer has shot at your wedding venue before. If they have, they may already know where to stand to get the perfect shot or how to incorporate the church’s ancient stained glass in a uniquely engaging way. With such experience comes not only

the knowledge of how to photograph a wedding, but also how to act during the ceremony and reception. For example, how will they dress and how will they act around your wedding party and guests? Beautiful photos capturing the smiles of family and friends are just as important as the multitude taken of the bride and groom. And speaking of which, they’ll be by your side just about as much as anyone in the party, and then some—how well do your personalities mesh? Will their presence be an asset or a burden? Truly, a wedding photographer’s charm and ability to put everyone at ease is as important a skill as the actual photography.

Determine Costs and Sign the Contract While you want to book your photographer for the date of your wedding immediately, make sure you read over the legal details of exactly what you will get before signing the contract. Questions to ask your Photographer: Todd & Lisa Myra - Todd Myra Photography photos@toddmyra.com

• Can I meet you for a consultation? It is important to spend some time not only talking business but also chatting informally with your potential photographer. Since you’ll be spending most of your wedding day with them, you’ll want to be sure you are comfortable with their personality and communication style. • Can I see your portfolio? Higher prices do not necessarily mean high quality photos. Make sure you like the photos of the photographer that will be shooting your wedding. Also make sure you see a complete wedding in an album, not just a “best of.” • Do you use high-end professional equipment? Churches and reception halls very often present low-light situations. Even outside might present low-light situations depending on time of day, time of year and weather. Does your photographer have the equipment to handle this? • What is your backup strategy? We have all heard the stories of the photographer who lost all their images. Make sure your photographer is careful about their images, backs up to multiple hard drives, including off-site locations. • Do you have backup gear? It is essential that your photographer have two of everythingcamera, flash, etc. This insures that even if something breaks, the photographer can keep going. • Are you insured? Professional liability ensures that not only will you and your guests be taken care of should disaster strike, but is one more sign that your wedding photographer is a true professional. • How many times have you worked specifically as a wedding photographer? Someone may be a great family and baby photographer, but wedding photography and working within the time constraints of the day is entirely different. Make sure your photographer is up to the task. • Are you the wedding photographer who will actually take our pictures? If not, can we meet the person who will be? Some studios hire others to shoot weddings. You will want to be sure to ask all of these questions of the person that will be photographing your wedding and as said before, make sure you are comfortable with that person.

Jewelry written by:

Erin Bitzan, D.J. Bitzan Jewelers erin@djbitzan.com

Your ring represents so much more than just the moment you said, “YES!” It symbolizes your first date, your best friend, a future of more sparkling memories to come. Your jeweler is your best resource when you have questions or concerns, but keeping in mind a few things about jewelry care will help preserve your most precious piece of jewelry for a lifetime of enjoyment. The best way to keep jewelry clean and intact - especially rings - is to take it off when you’re cleaning and doing other manual work. Surprisingly, simple things like household cleaning are often responsible for damage. Most people don’t realize that many common chemicals can be harmful to precious metal. For example, bleach and chlorine are two culprits that account for damaged jewelry. Avoid swimming in pools and hot tubs with your rings and other jewelry on. Repeated exposure can break down the bonds in between gold molecules resulting in brittle and broken prongs and shanks. When prongs break, diamonds are very susceptible to falling out of their settings. Try to make it a habit to remove your ring and put it in a safe place when you’re cleaning, gardening, or doing other hands-on projects. Your hands withstand a lot of wear and tear - sometimes without your notice! Your skin’s natural oils, beauty products like hairspray, and lotion contribute to dull and dirty jewelry. To clean most fine jewelry at home, use an old, soft-bristled 48

toothbrush and warm, soapy water. You can also use a jewelry solution available at jewelry stores. Ask your jeweler for a jar of cleaner and they should provide you with a professional-grade solution that will help keep your ring clean. Routine cleaning helps prevent buildup and keeps your stones sparkling. Don’t forget to plug the sink when you rinse your jewels clean though! Taking your ring to your jeweler is a great habit to establish right when you receive it. Most jewelers provide a complimentary warranty to ensure your jewelry lasts a lifetime. There’s nothing more heart-breaking than losing the diamond your fiancé picked out just for you. Most of the time this type of situation can be avoided if you have a professional inspect it periodically. Consider the type of warranty you’ll receive if you’re in the process of looking for rings - not all warranties are created equal! Make sure to ask your jeweler about their policies so you know exactly how they’ll take care of you after the purchase of your ring. In addition to making sure you have the perfect fit, they can clean and polish your ring - and if it’s white gold, rhodium plate it to maintain its white and shiny finish. Routine cleaning and inspection by a professional is crucial to keeping your ring in its best

condition. Prongs, channels, and crowns (components of your ring that keep diamonds and gemstones in place) do require maintenance over time. Getting your ring checked a couple times a year is crucial to catch significant damage and prevent more damage from occurring. If your ring is on a six-month cleaning schedule, set a reminder in your phone or calendar and update appraisals every few years or as required to make sure the value is up to date. Besides your warranty (which covers normal wear and tear), insuring your rings against loss and theft can provide peace of mind. Most insurance companies offer coverage at an affordable price so that you can enjoy wearing your ring without worry. Check with your insurance company about their options, policies, and prices to find a plan that works for you. Your rings are more than the sum of their parts - they are symbols of your lifetime commitment to each other worth preserving and protecting, now and forever. ♥

Custom Wedding Bands: As Unique and Beautiful as the Life You’re Building Together written by:

Melissa Kelly - J.F. Kruse Jewelers info@jfkrusejewelers.com

Your engagement ring is unbelievably meaningful and special. Whether you designed it together or he selected it on his own, it likely took months to decide upon the perfect diamond and setting. Helping you find or create jewelry to perfectly match your personality, style and story—is the sole purpose of the J.F. Kruse experience, and custom wedding jewelry is our sweet spot. Wedding rings are meant to be a symbol of your unending love and commitment, so making the “right” choices can feel overwhelming at times. Our best advice for brides? Keep it simple. Your wedding band should serve as an extension of your engagement ring and complement rather 50

than compete or clash. SIMPLE DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN ORDINARY. Our custom design services allow you to choose. From the style to the inscription, we help you create wedding bands that reflect the passion and personality of your unique and incredible love story. CUSTOM DOESN’T MEAN COMPLICATED AND EXPENSIVE. Whether you know exactly what you want or haven’t got a clue about where to start, our non-commissioned artisans and designers will work with you to explore and develop ideas. You can customize from

scratch or find something you love in our showcases and add meaningful touches of your own. Either way, our custom design services are completely free. CONSIDER THESE IDEAS Choose a complementary metal. While metals such as white gold and platinum have been long-time favorites for wedding jewelry, yellow gold and rose gold are emerging as refreshingly traditional options. Think about adding juxtaposition to your bridal set by introducing a different metal via your custom wedding band. Stack them up. Bridal stacks allow you to create a signature layered look that is flexible and distinctively yours. Don’t be afraid to mix and mingle—diamonds, colored gemstones, metals, shapes and traditional and non-traditional styles. You can stack two, three or more wedding bands alongside your engagement ring or wear wedding bands on your left-hand

ring finger and your engagement ring on your right. Incorporate an heirloom. What could be more powerful than carrying a piece of your personal history forward into your future? We are honored and humbled to incorporate diamonds, gemstones and even metals with emotional and/or historical significance into custom wedding bands. Add personal, intimate touches. Capture the private nuances of your relationship on the inside or outside of your bands by adding his and her birthstones,

preserving fingerprints or inscribing a special acronym, nickname or date. WITH THIS RING – THE J.F. KRUSE CUSTOM DESIGN PROCESS When you’re ready to custom design your wedding bands, we are too. Our threestep process is simple, yet meaningful and fun. 1. Using hand-drawn sketches and/or real-time 3D technology, our expert staff guide you in creating jewelry that is entirely your own. 2. After you approve your design, our carver builds a three-dimensional wax model that you can touch, feel and even try on. 3. Once final adjustments are made to the wax carving, our goldsmith pours precious metal into the mold of your band(s) and sets each handselected diamond and gemstone before polishing your jewelry to a brilliant shine. J.F. Kruse is the only jeweler in Central Minnesota that can design and make your jewelry in house from start to finish. For the J.F. Kruse team, it’s really quite simple—we believe you should have the freedom to imagine and create jewelry as original and beautiful as the life you’re building together. ♥

Invitations & Cakes written by:

LeRae Rengel - Rengel Printing lerae@rengelprinting.com

When does the first impression of your wedding happen? At the church? At the reception? Actually, the true first impression happens when you formally ask your family and friends to join you on your special day – with your wedding invitations. You can create invitations that are uniquely yours. The wedding invitations are your guest’s first glimpse of your wedding. They set the tone through design and specific color combinations, and suggest the event’s overall level of formality. The first steps are to decide on the vision, the colors that you want integrated into the invite and the quantities needed. You may choose to create a traditional, formal wedding invite or a modern invite based on the wedding motif that you envision. An invitation can consist of several customary elements: an outer envelope; the invitation; a reception card; a response card that is self-addressed or includes a selfaddressed, unsealed envelope; an accommodations card; thank-you cards; and, in some cases if time allows, a save-the-date card or magnet. In designing a custom wedding invite, you will want to apply style and uniqueness to each piece, keeping them all socially correct and applying wedding invite etiquette as well. They can be worded and arranged in countless ways to reflect the style of the occasion. You should integrate your wedding colors into your invitations to tie your theme together. 58

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Invitations or Cakes

There are a large variety of ink colors, type styles and paper to choose from to create a unique wedding ensemble. In designing a custom invitation, please allow enough time for the actual design, proofing, printing, assembling, addressing and mailing. Invitations should be mailed out six to eight weeks prior to your big day. Request RSVPs with

the response card two to three weeks prior to the event. Remember to order at least 25 extra for last minute guest additions, mistakes and to have a couple for keepsakes. Creating a custom wedding collection will truly be a personal reflection of your special day! They will create your love story from the first impression to “I Do.” ♥

15 Wedding Cake Trends Just about anything can inspire your wedding cake design -- the beautiful ornate molding in your ballroom venue, your joint love of modern design, or even the pattern from the china you just registered for. Here, a few trends to help inspire your custom cake. (Your baker can help with the rest.) Metallic Cakes Metallics are big for stationery, and for wedding cakes as well. The best part about metallics? They can adapt to any style; delicate embroidery in gold feels opulent while geometric shapes give off a fresh, modern feel. If an entire tier is too much glitz for you, consider adding a little sparkle all over. Fine edible glitter (think: pixie dust) can add a decorative sheen to your cake without

overpowering the whole design. Ruffled Cakes For a seriously elegant look, skip the bold patterns and add-ons in favor of subtle embellishments with allover sugar ruffles. The look is light and airy and needs very little added detail. Finish it off with fresh flowers in between each tier or a few sugar flowers on top. Naked Cakes Yep, you read that right. With the deconstructed cake, you get to show off the inside. For a summertime wedding, berries work well; in winter and fall, ask your baker to fill the layers with seasonal fruits, like apples, pears, persimmons or even blood oranges.

59

White-on-White Wedding Cakes A white wedding cake is always in good taste. The fresh new way to do a white wedding cake is to add interesting allwhite embellishments. Dress up tiers with details, like piped embroidery or jeweled embellishments (we love petals or even pearls). Cascades of sugar flowers are great for adding dimension too. Painted Wedding Cakes Take a cue from what many invitation designers are doing and ask your cake baker to get a little artsy with your cake design. We’re talking marbleized cakes, stained-glass painted cakes and even Monet-inspired wedding cake designs. Pair those hand-painted tiers with solidcolored layers or even simple flower accents. Quick tip: For a cake design that’s so intricate, keep the tiers simple and stick to all one shape (either all classic round tiers or all square). Lace Wedding Cakes Experienced cake bakers are turning out tiers decorated with beautiful designs, reminiscent of the most gorgeous wedding gowns imaginable -- like yours. So decide which detail from your dress to 60

highlight on your cake, from a few simple sugar-made buttons to ivory and white fondant lace appliques wrapped around each tier. The key to pulling it off is in the color. This trend works best with light hues and little contrast. Woodland Wedding Cakes Earthy, whimsical wedding themes are hot this year, so it’s no wonder this same aesthetic is big for wedding cakes too. To get the look, choose an edible white or ivory color and accent it with fresh or lifelike sugar flowers and leaves. The display can really help you carry out the look here too. One pretty idea is to order a simple white cake and place it on top of a wooden tree ring decorated with moss and leaves. Geometric Wedding Cakes For a contemporary reception setting such as an urban loft, eye-catching patterns – squares, chevron, stripes – are a fun, fresh twist. A few places to find inspiration: your wedding invites, the ready-to-wear fashion runways and home design blogs and stores. One guideline: Stick to a simple color palette (think: orange and white or purple and

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Invitations or Cakes

white), so the colors don’t compete with the design. Rosette Wedding Cakes The rosette trend -- with textural sugarmade roses all over the cake -- is fun because the added dimension is different and unique but the look is still elegant and beautiful. One caveat? The color. Stick to white or ivory rosettes. (Allover light pink rosettes will look too juvenile.) Sugar Flower Bouquet Cakes Flowers – fresh and sugar-made – are practically synonymous with wedding cakes. The new take on wedding cake flower accents is to cluster sugar-made flowers into a mini-bouquet. The flower bouquet works best on a muted cake base color, like ivory, peach or mint. Finish off the tiers with a gold or silver metallic trim, or even a beveled lace treatment, for a look that’s simple, sophisticated and classic.

Buttercream Wedding Cakes If you’re going for a homespun, relaxed vibe, ask your baker to smother your wedding cake in delicious buttercream frosting. Wedding Cake Trio and Quintet Tables Cake trios, quartets and quintet tables come with a couple big benefits. For one, a large cake table like this gives you the opportunity to create a visually stunning display at your reception, which

Illustrated Wedding Cakes Did you know you can actually have anything you want printed onto your cake? It’s true. Pick anything you like -- from the design on your invites to the quote from your first-dance song or even your wedding motif, like a bicycle, oak tree, or anemone flowers – to have showcased onto your cake tiers. First, the cake gets covered in fondant, then the design is hand-painted on the cake. Ombre Wedding Cakes Having your cake colors take on an ombre effect is another artful cake design idea. It can be as whimsical or glamorous as you like. Blend yellow to orange sugar hearts for a graphic, modern style; or go red to pink to light pink with cascading sugarmade flower petals. On the fence about the trend? “Consider an ivory ombré for a classic look that’s both subtle and stunning,” Austin suggests.

means you get another place to show off your wedding colors and theme. Another perk: Having more than one cake also makes it very easy to choose multiple cake flavors (so you don’t have to decide between traditional vanilla, decadent chocolate or carrot cake with creamcheese frosting. Give guests choices, but don’t overwhelm them.

Monogrammed Wedding Cakes We’re not talking about the typical monogrammed cake topper. The idea here is to design a cake made to highlight your new shared monogram. A few ideas: a hand-drawn monogram in a scripted style on a beveled gold sugar plaque or a rustic sugar-made plaque, or a patterned monogram on a square cake for a modern look.

wedding cake. If your wedding guests are traditional people, they might think cupcakes are too casual, or worse, cheap. But if you’re having a relaxed reception where fun is the primary goal, tell everyone to be a kid again and grab a cupcake. Once they’re up and having fun on the dance floor, they won’t have to sit again for dessert. They’ll just grab a cupcake and keep on groovin’. ♥

Should You Serve Cupcakes Instead of Wedding Cake? Wedding cupcakes were originally thought to be a passing fad, but it looks like they’re here to stay! It’s no wonder: these pint-size confections add a whimsical touch to your wedding reception with the added bonus of being slightly more affordable than a traditional wedding cake. But is a cupcake wedding cake right for you? There’s something so nostalgic and childlike about unwrapping a cupcake. And that’s what people both love and hate about wedding cupcakes – are they fun and familiar or too casual and unsophisticated? Formal Wear written by:

Jen Mayers – Wedding & Tuxedo Connection wtconnection@meltel.net

By the time you’re ready to start shopping for your wedding dress, you’ve probably searched numerous Pinterest boards and magazines looking for your dream gown. Most bridal shops will only allow an hour-long appointment. While one hour is plenty of time to try on dresses, if you can narrow down your options before stepping foot in the dressing room, you’re in for a much more pleasant, laid-back shopping experience. One easy way to narrow down your gown options is to choose a silhouette that will highlight your best-loved assets and conceal your less-favorable areas. To start, figure out which of the five featured body types best defines your figure: • Petite • Hourglass • Lean & Straight • Plus Size • Busty And remember, you may not fit squarely into one category — most people don’t! Determine your budget before shopping; that will help the consultant pull gowns that won’t break the bank. If it’s not your first time shopping and you’ve fallen in love with a gown somewhere else, let your consultant know that as well. If you have a photo, show them the dress “to beat”. www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Dresses & Tuxedos

67

This will help guide the appointment as well to make sure your consultant is putting you in silhouettes you know you love. Remember, once you’ve found “the one” it takes 6 months to get your gown in the store once ordered. Custom gowns can sometimes even take a little longer. Make sure to give yourself enough time to order and have alterations done before your wedding. You don’t want to be stressing out about your dress showing up on time because you waited. There are always the rush fee options but you’ll want to avoid having to pay more than necessary for your wedding dress! Along with finding the right gown for your body type, there are a few other things that can help make your wedding dress shopping experience as easy as possible. First, trust your consultant and don’t be afraid to try on gowns they suggest which may be outside of your traditional comfort zone. Sometimes “the one” isn’t one you would have even thought to try on, until you do! Also shop with a supportive crew! Miss Negativity does not deserve a trusted spot on your “yay-or-nay” team. Finally, if possible, do your makeup and

68

hair. It will be much easier for you to imagine wearing one of these gowns on your wedding day if you feel done up, like a bride. Looking to make a statement for the groom and the rest of the bridal party? One super hot trend right now is the navy or slate blue tuxedo with a cognac brown shoe! We are also seeing lots of colorful suspenders with bow ties replacing the classic more traditional vest and long tie too. However, you can’t beat a sharp, classic black tuxedo! Decide what is going to fit your theme. Are you having a rustic, destination or church wedding? Once you’ve decided on the color of the tuxedo, it’s time to decide who is wearing what color? Often, the groom will match his bride in white or ivory and the groomsmen match the bridal party’s color as well. The ushers and dads will usually be in an accent color or black. If you have a little ring bearer, he will usually match the groom. Pocket squares and boutonnieres can add that little pop of color you may be looking for as well. Well, what are you waiting for? Book your appointment and start making those lists! ♥

Silhouette Guide Ball Gown –

The Ball Gown is fitted at the bodice and has a waistline that leads to a full skirt. It compliments hourglass body types.

A-Line –

The A-Line is fitted at the bodice and angles out to the ground and resembles the outline of an ‘A’. This is the most universal silhouette because it tends to look great on every body type.

Trumpet –

The Trumpet hugs the hips and flows out in an A-line around the mid-thigh. It tastefully compliments a woman’s shape without being confining.

Mermaid –

The Mermaid does fit closely to the body to the knees. It then flares out to the hem. This style looks good on women with a straight shape.

Sheath –

The Sheath is usually semi-fitted from top to bottom with a straight skirt and has no waist. This will be flattering on many shapes.

Goddess –

The Goddess is a new shape that seamstresses refer to in describing any shape that flows freely from the bust line. In most cases, this Goddess has an empire waist so the dress will flow freely. It also flatters most body shapes. www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Dresses & Tuxedos

Questions to consider when choosing wedding attire: Dresses: • Make a look book. • Determine your budget. • Think about the wedding location. • Consider the temperature. • Scout dresses at retail stores - note what dresses work best with your body type. • Make your buy about eight months before the wedding. Tuxedos: • Consider ALL the costs when choosing a tux shop. • Don’t put the tuxedos to the bottom of the things to do list. • Don’t be rushed into giving a deposit to formal wear shops at the Bridal Show. • Choose a formal wear shop that is close to the location of your ceremony for several different reasons. • Proceed with caution when a store claims infallibility under the guise that all the tuxedos they rent are “in stock.” • Choose a formal wear provider who offers you a personal consultation by appointment. • Don’t worry about your groomsmen coming from out of town. • Don’t go crazy trying to visit every tux shop in person. • Don’t be swayed by “Designer Names.”

Enjoy the experience!

The Ultimate Guide to Wedding Rentals From sleek, chic and minimal to decor that oozes vintage charm, there’s a wide world of stylish pieces ready to rent. If you can envision your ceremony style and décor, you can create it in real life. Such is the state of party and event rentals today. Your Central Minnesota Wedding Association members that specialize in wedding décor rentals offer the widest range of options. Tips for Your Rentals Make it fun! Consider renting crowdpleasers such as cotton candy makers and popcorn machines. For outdoor areas, offer games like bocce ball and a beanbag toss. Your best source for rentals? The 78

Central Minnesota Wedding Association members listed on page 87 of this Décor and Rentals section. How much do you need? Consider at least three to four dishes, glasses, stemware and flatware pieces per guest. For a cocktail hour, you’ll need at least three glasses for each person. And order at least 10 extra chairs for your ceremony, plus 10 extras for your cocktail party and reception in case any chairs arrive cracked or broken. The essential questions to ask • Are you licensed and insured? • Have you worked events at our ceremony/reception venue(s) before? (A very important question, especially for tent rentals!)

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Decor & Rentals

• Can we view item selections before renting? • Will we be able to view actual rental items from your supply, or will we be shown samples? • Will we be able to contact you on the day of our event? (Get the name and cell phone number of an in-charge person in case of problems and needed solutions.) • Are setup and delivery fees included in our order? Or are they extra? • What are delivery charges for our locations? • How much is required for deposit? • When is deposit due? (Most companies require a non-refundable deposit, roughly equal to one-third of the total rental package price. This amount is usually due when you book your rental items.) • When is final payment due? • Which methods of payment do you accept? • When will our rented items be delivered to the venue? Arrange for a time that allows setup without pressure, at least several hours before your event starts. • Will delivery workers bring all rented items inside the venue and set everything up? Or do you offer ‘tailgate service’ delivery, wherein the company

• • •

• •

just drops off your rented items in a driveway or at the venue entrance, leaving you to carry everything inside and set up yourself? Will someone instruct us on how to operate the rented item? (Especially key for lighting rentals.) When will delivery workers return to collect all rented items after the wedding? How do we prepare rented items for pickup? Do we have to clean dishes, glasses, flatware first, or do we load dirties into their crates? How will rented chairs need to be arranged for pickup? Some companies require you to fold chairs closed and some require sliding them into padded delivery bags in which they came. What are the costs and details in case any items are broken or lost? What is your cancellation/refund policy?

Let’s break it all down by important categories. Tables Essentials: Guest tables in a collection of rounds, long family-style, or a mix of table shapes and sizes. You might also consider sweetheart and buffet tables

79

and separate tables for gifts, guest book and family photos. What’s Hot: Mixing table sizes and shapes to maximize your space. Rusticwooden tables are a major trend, as are mixes of wood and glass table tops. Don’t Forget: If you don’t have a wedding coordinator to handle this task, bring layouts of your ceremony and reception sites to your rental agent, so that he or she can advise on your table choice and arrangements.

Linens Essentials: Guest table tablecloths, table runners, napkins for both cocktail party and reception, as well as luxe or vintage linens for the cake, gift, sweetheart and photo tables. Also consider chair covers: they are a great way to add color and texture to your space. What’s Hot: Luxury materials, supple leathers, monochromatic earth tones, and also color in bright jewel tones such as plum, ruby, emerald, citrine, and sapphire

Chairs Essentials: Chairs for ceremony, cocktail party and reception. What’s Hot: Vintage armchairs, chiavari chairs, acrylic chairs, simple chairs dressed up in tie-on ruffled fabric covers. Don’t Forget: High chairs and booster seats for the littlest guests and a pair of decorative chairs for you and your new spouse at the sweetheart table.

are popular. Organic linens are in demand as well, with soft bamboo being a top touchable fabric. Don’t Forget: Napkin rings and hidden clips to keep table linens from whipping around in breezes at outdoor weddings. Plus table pads to protect wood tables from damaging water stains and spills.

80

Lounge furniture Essentials: Couch, ottoman, armchair

and coffee table arrangements for guestgathering spots. What’s Hot: Vintage armchairs and settees; French country armoires; cleanlined, modern sofas and chairs; long, wooden tables; Art Deco styles. Don’t Forget: Measure doorways to be sure that larger pieces can be delivered into your party venue before ordering. Tents Essentials: Whether simple and utilitarian or fully outfitted with entrance canopies, chandeliers and luxe draping, professional installation is a must. What’s Hot: Clear-topped tents, luxe tent liners, fabric draping in tent ceiling, chandelier lighting, quality flooring so you can dance all night. Don’t Forget: Check with your site to be sure they allow tents. Have your tent rental source conduct a site visit to assess the space, and suggest the ideal tent size and flooring options. These items may be needed if your chosen caterer does not provide them … food for thought. Dishes Essentials: Cocktail-party appetizer plates, china patterns, chargers, dessert plates, footed bowls for desserts. What’s Hot: Color in plates, especially in chargers, add flair. Gold- or platinumrimmed plates and gold or metallic chargers also lead the trends, as well as eclectic vintage collections. Don’t Forget: Unbreakable plates for the little ones — no one wants to deal with expensive breakage. Stem & Glassware Essentials: Champagne flutes, bar glasses in various sizes, red and/or white wine glasses, beer mugs, soft-drink glasses, water glasses. What’s Hot: Gold-rimmed stemware, stemless wine glasses (so chic — plus they are well-balanced, which lessens the

chance of breakage fees). Don’t Forget: Martini glasses for dessert servings; appropriate glassware for your signature cocktails. (Know what you’ll serve before you order your glassware.) Flatware Essentials: Utensils for the cocktail party, plus knives, forks and spoons for the reception dinner. What’s Hot: Luxe gold flatware, vintage, heirloom-style silver and mix-and-match utensil patterns. Don’t Forget: Serving utensils, if you’ll have family-style service at your reception. And don’t forget serving bowls and platters. Most rental sources offer gorgeous hammered silver or copper serving bowls and chafing dishes. ♥ Contributing Source: www.bridalguide.com/ planning/wedding-reception/wedding-rentals

Questions to ask for décor or rentals: • Is the first visit a free consultation? • Ask for references as well as the decorator’s experience in the industry. • Ask if the decorator has any special deals or other ways to give you the best value for your money. • Ask for a “door quote,” which is the full amount you will pay, including all fees, before signing a contract. • Ask about the policy on deposits and refunds. • Are there any photos of similar weddings that may be emailed to you, or is there a portfolio available for you to look at? • Do you have delivery fees, set up/tear down fees or a damage deposit requirement? • What is the payment schedule?

www.idoido.org - Select Vendors

Selecting a Wedding Florist You will probably purchase more flowers from your florist for your wedding than for any other occasion in your life. The florist you select will play a major role in setting the tone for your big day. Besides your bridal bouquet, traditionally you’ll need—at a minimum—bouquets for your attendants, boutonnieres for your groom, groomsmen and fathers; corsages for your mothers; flowers to decorate the ceremony site, and centerpieces for the reception tables. To make sure all of these blooms are beautiful and within your budget, picking the right florist—and knowing how to work with her— is crucial. These days, many florists who specialize in weddings don’t just do blooms; they also conceive and execute the design for your reception, from flowers to linens, candles, decorative trees, lights and more. Whether you go with one of these full-service designers or a standard florist who’ll provide bouquets, centerpieces and the like, you should start looking for a professional at least several months before the wedding, or even earlier if you can. To select a wedding florist, your guru of blooms, begin by asking for recommendations from recently married friends and from wedding professionals. Your contacts at both ceremony and reception sites probably have florists they’ve worked with repeatedly and www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Florists

89

can recommend. This is helpful because it means the florist is already familiar with the site—but be sure to follow up with your own research and reference checks. Once you select your initial florist candidates, make an appointment to view each one’s work. First look at any arrangements on display in their shop to see if you like the colors and combinations, and if the blossoms on hand look healthy and fresh. Take a careful look at the florist’s portfolio of other wedding work, and be sure to study both bouquets and table arrangements. If you like what you see, it’s time to talk about your needs. Selecting a Florist Is not Just About Flowers When interviewing florists, be prepared to give them a full picture of your entire wedding, and to discuss your flower preferences and budget. Everything— from your color scheme to how your 90

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Florists

attendants plan to wear their hair— sets the mood for your bouquets and arrangements. Be sure to bring swatches and photos of your gown and your bridesmaids’ dresses, as well as drawings or pictures of the sites you’ll be using so you can discuss ideal placement for floral arrangements. Visualize all the places you can adorn with blossoms. (Obviously this means that you can’t plan your flowers until the big decisions of date, location and gown have been made.) Think in advance about your flower budget and let your potential florist know this immediately. And, to make sure she understands the look you’re after, clip pictures of any floral arrangements you like from magazines, be it sparse birch branches for a winter wedding or a bunch of colorful tulips. You don’t need to be able to reel off the specific flowers you want to use, but showing her examples of the style you prefer will help her work up designs—and realistic estimates. Once your florist understands your desires and price range, the florist can

start making her own suggestions, based on her expertise about flower types and prices. If you tell her you want to carry roses, she can offer options from budget to blow-out. For example, a simple armful of roses hand-tied with elegant ribbon will require far less labor and therefore will cost less than the same flowers arranged into an elaborate mixed bouquet. If your heart is set on the time-consuming arrangement, she can recommend elegant but reasonable flowers to mix in, plus ways to save on the centerpieces to keep it all within budget. This type of back-and-forth is the kind of relationship you should look for in choosing your florist. Your florist should be someone who can take your vision and run with it, who offers advice and suggestions but gives you the final say, and who commits to working within your style and price range. ♥ Source: http://www.bridalguide.com/planning/ wedding-reception/selecting-a-wedding-florist

Questions to ask the Florist: • Can you see photographs or live examples of past work? • When do you need a final count for table centerpieces? • Can you provide items such as vases or candelabras? • Do you know who will be creating your flowers? Be sure to get to know the person who will, so you can trust them. • How many weddings is the florist handling on the day or weekend of your wedding? • Can you recommend any seasonal flowers that would help keep cost down? • How much is it to secure my date? • When is the final balance due? • Do you deliver? Is there a fee? When would you be delivering the flowers or when would we pick them up?

Music and Entertainment written by:

Sharon Planer - Pianist for Parties sharon@pianistforparties.com

Music speaks to the heart and is a wonderful way to portray the uniqueness of your love! Hiring experienced and professional musicians will assure that your music is effortlessly woven into all aspects of your wedding. When looking to hire musicians you can get a good feel for their personalities and talent by visiting their web sites. Ask your officiant, your wedding planner and your recently married friends for their recommendations of musicians. Online reviews by other couples will give you good insight into their experiences with musicians as well. Contact the musicians that appeal to

you. How do they respond? Can they provide you with samples of their music? Do you feel comfortable with their style of communication? Do they seem truly interested and excited about you and your wedding? Look for music that will enhance your style and theme. What is special about the relationship the two of you have? Are there particular songs that reflect your love? Those songs might be perfect for certain parts of your wedding. Your musician will enjoy helping you decide where in your ceremony or reception these songs might be best performed. Live music can enhance your wedding in many ways. Greeting your guests with

music as they arrive to your ceremony is a great ice breaker and will announce that something very special is about to happen! Music performed during your ceremony will speak directly to the heart. Following the ceremony your guests will be ready to party! Upbeat happy music will put you and your guests in a mood to celebrate. Quiet songs of romance during dinner create an elegant atmosphere while allowing you and your guests to dine and converse. Kick up the music into high gear following dinner! Some couples have a strong sense of the type of music they want. Find musicians that have a repertoire suitable to your interests. If you have special songs that your musicians must learn, find out if they are willing to learn new music and give them plenty of advance notice.

For couples who have no idea on the type of music appropriate for their wedding, find a musician that is knowledgeable in guiding you through the process of determining your repertoire. If possible, meet with your musicians in person to plan and select your music. Be prepared to share your song ideas and questions. Your musician should be able to take you step by step through the planning process. Communication between your wedding professionals is important. Finding a musician that is willing to communicate ahead of time with your other wedding professionals will help to assure that on your wedding day all of your wedding professionals are working together to make your wedding dreams a reality! ♥

Musical Choices for your Wedding Day written by:

Larry Rowe – Impressions Mobile Music larry@impressionsmobilemusic.com

With so many choices for your wedding day from the colors of your wedding to the dessert you’ll be serving for your guests, you can easily become overwhelmed with the entire planning process. First and foremost, enjoy your time planning. If there is one area that you should spend the time doing your research and making sure you find the right fit for you and your wedding, it is your entertainment. Who else will keep the party going? Let’s face it… not all DJ/Entertainment companies are the same. With basic dj gear becoming more affordable, more 98

bedroom djs are popping up. Keep in mind that many guests and newlyweds say what they remember most from a wedding (besides how beautiful the bride and groom are) is the entertainment. As each wedding is as unique as the couple themselves, make sure to find a company willing to listen to your needs, wants and desires for your wedding day. A true professional will take the time to understand what your vision is for your wedding day and will discuss and help you create the day you want. When starting to think what services

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment

you all need for your wedding day, start by envisioning the music and sound needs for your wedding ceremony. If it’s at a church, everything is likely taken care of. However becoming more popular are ceremonies outside of a church. Your ceremony itself will contain four main components: Prelude, Processional, Entrance of the Bride, and Recessional. If you have more than 50 people showing up to your ceremony, you’ll likely require additional sound, microphones and music for your ceremony. Make sure to talk to an experienced entertainer who has done many ceremonies. Still the majority of events a DJ will do will be the wedding reception itself. This is where you can really distinguish the pros from the bedroom weekend DJ hobbyists. Experience, emcee skills and professional equipment is a must. Having an entertainer that can speak clearly on the microphone is so often overlooked. You’ve now found the company you want to go with. Congratulations, check an important item off your list. As you continue to create your wedding experience for you and your guests, make sure to add your personal touches.

From showing off your wedding cake to creating an ambiance throughout the venue with uplighting. There are many ways that a DJ can continue to enhance your surroundings on your special day. Pin spotting is a great way to enhance a particular area of your venue that you want to accentuate. Some popular pin spotting areas have included candy tables, card tables, gift tables or to show off your beautiful wedding cake. Many newlyweds want to show a slide show of them growing up and also pictures of them growing together. This is a great way to show your guests your history. Typically, this can be played during social hour or during dinner. If you do a service like this, some companies may have the technology to then have music videos played throughout the night. What better way to add a personal touch like no other than having a personalized monogram. A personalized monogram can include your wedding date, both of your names and can be created in many different styles. Popular areas to shine your monogram include above the head table or on the dance floor.

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment

99

By far, the most popular add-on we see is uplighting. Uplighting can add a visual impact throughout your reception hall or outside around a building. Your imagination is the limit. Uplighting is the most affordable way to decorate your reception venue and create an ambiance unique to your event. By placing lighting fixtures on the ground and focusing them upward, uplighting can add color and depth to an otherwise boring wall or column. It also adds energy and vibrancy to your photos! As you can see, there are many options to make your wedding uniquely yours. From the time your first guest arrives at your ceremony to the last dance of the evening, a DJ can enhance your wedding experience through sound, music and lights. Don’t be afraid to create a space that will leave your guests amazed by your visual design. With today’s technology, your options are seemingly unlimited. Don’t let anything hold you back as you prepare for one of the most important days of

100

your life…your wedding day!! While researching your entertainment company, there are some questions you should be asking each prospective vendor for your wedding reception: • Is our wedding date available? Pretty obvious; however, some of the best DJs book up out to two years in advance. • Do you have any pictures of your set up? Look at photos of setups that they have. You want to make sure to look for a clean and professional set up. • How long have you been in business? How many weddings have you done? Experience…experience…experience. Not only do you want someone experienced with various dance floors, but one that is knowledgeable on the equipment they are using. • What is your backup plan for unforeseen issues that could arise? Do they have

backup equipment, cords or even a DJ to fill in if necessary? Life happens and they should always be prepared. • Will you be the DJ at our wedding? If not, can I meet/talk to my DJ prior to your wedding date? Are they a single operator or do they have multiple DJs working for their company? • Are you part of any professional organizations? Such as Central Minnesota Wedding Association!! Companies that continue to work on networking and growing their business tend to take more pride in the product they put out. • Do you have any recent reviews? What better way to get a feel for an entertainer/DJ than from recent reviews. • How big is your music database? If you don’t have a song requested, what is your plan to get it? You may only need 150-200 songs for the entire night, but if you allow the DJ to take requests, he should be prepared with a library of over 20,000 songs. Make sure they legally download their music. Pirated music does sound different when played at a higher volume. • Have you done events at our wedding venue? Some venues may have hidden surprises and your entertainment company should be properly prepared. Ask the venue itself if they have any DJ recommendations. • Are there any additional services that you provide, such as up-lighting, slideshows, pin spotting or a photo booth? Goes back to understanding and helping create your vision for your wedding day. • What sets you apart from your competition? When it’s all said and done, make sure you’re comfortable with who you invite/hire to be a part of one of the happiest days of your life…your wedding day! ♥ www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment

Questions to ask your music provider: • Do you have my date open? • Have you done events at my ceremony and/or reception location before? If not, are you familiar with them? • How long have you been in business? • How many weddings have you done? How many do you do in an average weekend? • What sets you apart from your competition? • Are there any other services that you provide, such as lighting design? • How far in advance do I need to secure your services? • What is your pricing? Does this include setup and breakdown between ceremony and reception locations? • How much is the deposit and when is it due? When is the final payment due? • If the event lasts longer than scheduled, what are the overtime charges? • What is the continuous music charge? • When can I expect to receive my contract from you? • Are there any additional fees that could accrue that I am not taking into account? • What is your refund policy if for some reason I need to cancel or alter my date? • Do you carry liability insurance? • If I hire musicians for the ceremony and want them to play at the wedding rehearsal, what is the extra charge? • Can you assist me in choosing the music for my processional, recessional, Father-Daughter Dance, etc.? • How extensive is your music library or song list? What genres can you cover? Can I give you a specific list of songs I want or don’t want played? • Can you provide us with wireless mics for the ceremony? • Does any of your equipment require special electrical outlets that I need to inform my wedding site about? • What kind of space or stage do you require for the DJ or band? • How much time will you need for setup, sound check and breakdown on the day of the event?

Transportation 101 – Arrive in Style written by:

Tami Spanier – Pearl Limousine, Inc. info@pearl-limo.com

As you plan your special day your thoughts should include how you and that special person you are marrying are going to “arrive in style” for the most anticipated day of your life. Whether you are choosing a limousine, a vintage car, a bus, or a horse-drawn carriage there are many options available to you. Limousines and charter buses have grown in popularity in recent years. Wedding couples have been making transportation arrangements in order to keep their wedding party together throughout the day; from the ever popular church or park to the reception to the all-day package that is open to the couples every whim. Wedding guest transportation also continues to be a growing trend.

Whether your party is large or small, your style is elegant or relaxed, your budget is limited or extravagant the following information will help direct you down the path to trouble free transportation arrangements. • Work with a “reputable” company when choosing your transportation. Check their BBB rating (Better Business Bureau). Proper Licensing, Insurance, and Driver Qualifications are important! Your “safety” should be foremost in your mind. • Chose an appropriate “size” vehicle for your needs. Comfort should be paramount! Note the broad shoulders/height of your groomsmen and the fullness of the bride and bridesmaid’s dresses.

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Transportation Services

111

• Reserve as “early” as possible. If your heart is set on a particular limousine or option; make sure to get your signature on the dotted line for your date and time. However, don’t assume there is nothing out there if you want to book the week before. You may be surprised what is still available. • Letting “cost” be the deciding factor in determining what type of transportation you choose or what company you work with may not be the best idea. Sometimes what appears to be a great price turns into a disappointment in the end. Do your homework, details matter! Certain package options including, split time, all day, or minimum hour time frames may be worth your consideration. (Remember that the gratuity is usually an additional expense.) • Get a “written” confirmation sheet or contract. That way there is no misunderstanding as to when and where your transportation is expected. • “Understand” what you have reserved. Knowing what is included in your wedding package, Red Carpet Service, or what is customary goes a long way in you having a smooth ride. Remember, even though you are paying for the vehicle, any illegal behavior/activity is still illegal and prohibited. • How will the driver/chauffer be “dressed”? Most professional transportation companies have set attire for their personnel. Ask what your driver will be wearing. • Is “alcohol” included in the price? Limousine and charter companies may provide non-alcoholic beverages along with the glassware set up, however, MN State Statues prohibits companies from providing alcoholic beverages. Check with your provider as to what type, if any, alcoholic beverages may be brought into the transportation choice you have made. • As mentioned above “Wedding 112

Guests” transportation is a growing trend. If you are serving alcoholic beverages throughout your reception, it may be wise to provide a safe ride for your guests too. Some hotels and venues provide shuttle services but not all. Ask your transportation provider for their input. There are “economical” options available that could keep you from needless worry and/or liability. Whether you have chosen a limousine, a bus, or a buggy; chosen a full day package or just a ride from the church/ park to the reception, you can make these reservations at any time. Just don’t forget to “Arrive in Style”! ♥

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Transportation Services

Questions for your transportation provider: • What type of vehicle do I want? • Who do I want in the vehicle? (Options for parents/grandparents?) • How many hours will I need? • When should I reserve? • What is included? (Packages / Red Carpet Service) • Should I think about “Wedding Guest” Transportation?

How Do I Find The Right Officiant? written by:

Kathy Arneson, Officiant – Always & Forever Officiant Services anfofficiant@yahoo.com

There are several sites online that have various wedding vendors listed, apparel, floral, invitations, transportation all the way to officiants. Many of these sites have a rating and review system. The higher the ratings and more positive the reviews should be an indicator for your consideration. Talk to your married friends that have used officiants, get their opinions and recommendations. When meeting with other vendors, ask them who they recommend. Contact the recommended officiants and get a feel for their personalities. The Officiant you want should work well with you, not just physically but on an emotional level as well. Weddings are a very emotional event, the planning all the way to execution, it’s draining and

a good Officiant will recognize that and offer support. A good Officiant will meet with you as many times as it takes for you to feel comfortable, be accessible for any questions, be prompt in their replies and guide you through the whole process, to choosing the right ceremony and assisting with vows, at no additional cost. You want your personalities to match. It would be disastrous if your personalities clashed and your vision went one way and the Officiant went another. Once you find one you feel comfortable with, set up a meet and greet with them. The only thing you should need to bring is a list of questions to ask. Once you ascertain that this is the Officiant for you, confirm the booking with them; that may be paying a deposit or signing a contract.

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Wedding Planning & Officiants

117

Some questions to consider asking at your meet and greet: • Are there any rules or restrictions imposed by the church or officiant? • What are the officiant’s fee and travel expenses? • When would rehearsal be and is that an extra fee? • What does the Officiant/church provide and what does the bridal couple need to provide? • How long before the wedding do I need to get my license? • Do we need to go through premarital counseling? • Do we need to take the license down after the wedding? • What is all included in their fees? Now Officiants cannot marry any couple without the proper legal licensing. If you have forgotten your marriage license in the hectic scramble to get ready, a mock ceremony can occur, but a real ceremony won’t. That would have to be done at a time when

the license is present. Some Officiants will refuse to perform a ceremony if the parties are intoxicated. Honestly, if you have to be intoxicated to get married, is it the thing you really want to do? You can expect your Officiant to be professional and conduct themselves in a caring, mature manner, to dress appropriately for your occasion and to be polite and respectful of you and your guests. Premarital counseling is required for a lower rate on your marriage license. If you select not to do counseling, a higher fee is applied. It is the legal responsibility of the Officiant to register the license. If there is one that requests you to take it to the courthouse after your wedding--REFUSE to do so! The Officiant is registered with a county in the state and is legally obligated to have the license registered. ♥

Why Hire a Wedding Planner? written by:

Kelly – Events by Kelly and Chandra LLC eventsbykellyandchandra@gmail.com

What time is the DJ coming? When will the flowers be delivered? Who will set out the cupcakes? How will I know if everything I rented has been delivered? These are just a few of the questions that may be spinning inside your head while you are trying to get as much sleep as you can before becoming a Mr. or a Mrs. All the details that go into planning a wedding can become very overwhelming. Hiring a professional wedding planner may be just what you need to bring back the excitement of your wedding day and get the rest you need! 118

As you go through the planning process, you may have different event coordinators working with you – one at the ceremony site, one at the reception venue, one for the caterer, etc. – so why would you need a wedding planner? Wedding planners are in contact with all the vendors and event coordinators, plus they will be with you for the duration of your wedding day. They will help create a timeline of events and assist with your budget. But most importantly, they will know which vendors are going to work well with your theme, budget, and style.

www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Wedding Planning & Officiants

You may be worried that if you hire a wedding planner they will completely take over the planning process or you won’t be able to afford them. Most professional wedding planners have different packages you can choose from. You can choose to have them plan your entire wedding if you don’t know the first thing about planning such a momentous event. Generally, this type of package will be the most expensive. But, if you know exactly what you want and have a majority of the planning done, you may only need the wedding planner for day-of-coordinating. The cost of this is minimal when it comes to having peace of mind! A very popular trend in planning a wedding is creating a Pinterest board (or two, or three, or ten…), so what good is a wedding planner when you have everything you need on one of your boards? Well, let’s be honest, are you really going to do everything on your board for your wedding? A wedding planner will help you narrow in on exactly what you want and make sure what you want is realistic. They will be able to know what works and what doesn’t work, which may help you avoid some costly mistakes! We all know that weddings today are not the same as what weddings were when your parents got married. This may cause some conflicts between you and your parents or future-in-laws when it comes to the ideas you have for your wedding day. A wedding planner is someone that is in your corner and they will have certain tactics on dealing with

those difficult conversations you may not want to have. Their job is to focus on making your wedding day exactly how you want it so you don’t have to feel obligated to do something a family member wants you to do (no matter how “timeless” your grandma’s wedding dress is!). You want your wedding day memories to be filled with love, happiness, and the feeling that everything was perfect! The last thing you want is to feel that you were too stressed to enjoy it, you overspent, or that your guests did not have a good time. By letting a professional wedding planner assist you in the planning process, you will be able to enjoy the butterflies of being newly engaged, go into your wedding day knowing everything is taken care of, and live happily ever after! ♥

Questions for the officiant: • Are there any documents you should bring to your first meeting? • Does the officiant or church have any special rules or restrictions? • Does the officiant require premarital counseling, either from the officiant or elsewhere? • Does the officiant charge a ceremony fee? How much? • When will the rehearsal be? • If you are planning the ceremony at the church of a pastor, find out what the church provides and what you need to provide.

Questions to consider when hiring a wedding planner: • What are the different packages offered? • Will my wedding be the only event you have that day? • Do you help with decorating? • How many planners will be assisting with my wedding? • Will I be charged extra for emailing and calling outside of scheduled meeting times? • Do we pay you a lump sum to pay our vendors, or do we pay them individually? • Do you offer discounts for choosing certain vendors? • Will you be at the rehearsal? • How long will you be on-site the day of the wedding? • What other events do you plan (groom’s dinner, bridal shower, etc)? • What is your favorite part of being a wedding planner?

The Experience is What Creates the Memories... written by: Nichole Winter – Destination Vacation destinationvacationtravel@gmail.com

A honeymoon has been a long time tradition for many couples. It is meant to get away and enjoy each other as a newly married couple. Most couples take this time to make it a special and romantic time just for the two of them, recognizing that this is a once in a life time vacation. With pre-wedding planning can come busyness and stress. A honeymoon sounds dreamy and a perfect opportunity to enjoy quality time together. Just the thought of getting away for a few days or maybe even up to two weeks sounds like paradise. The first step in planning your

honeymoon is discussing together. Naturally for an engaged couple their conversations gravitate towards the actual destination. This can be a great place to start especially if there has been a dream destination in mind. However, for many couples this is the biggest vacation they are about to take or maybe this is their first time leaving the country (if that is what you desire). Rather than focus on the actual destination start with what you want to experience. When discussing ask each other this. . . . . . Imagine yourself on your honeymoon, what do you see yourself enjoying or

doing together? Make a list of 3-5 things and compare each other’s list. A few common answers are: • Relaxing Together • Enjoying Tropical Weather • Couples Massage at a Spa • Trying a New Activity! I hear a lot of Zip Lining! • Being Spoiled • Wanting it Romantic • For the Adventurous; Hiking, Biking & Diving Once you start imagining your honeymoon this can blend together what the two of you want to enjoy together. Your second step would be to reach out to a Travel Agent. Find one that is a Honeymoon and Destination Wedding specialist. Let them hear how you imagine your honeymoon. From there your expert can narrow down not only the destination but the actual resort and help you plan those experiences you desire to enjoy. Who knows, they may bring up a few activities you have not thought of, such as setting up a private romantic dinner on the beach. There is nothing more exciting than painting a picture to a couple of how they will enjoy their days in paradise. Your travel agent can also help you find that budget you are comfortable with. Last step is to ENJOY because truly that is what your honeymoon is all about. Having great discussions and a travel professional on your side you will be ready to relax and enjoy a vacation of a life time. That is the entire point of a honeymoon! Remember it is your experiences that will create the unforgettable memories. ♥
