Did You Start Your Day With Us? ACSS’s Welcomes Students in a BIG Way

Adult and Commuter Student Services (ACSS) gave students a heart-felt welcome during the first week of classes with the “Start Your Day with Us” and the “Commuter Chill-Out” ice cream social events.

Commuter students coming from Walker Ave. and Central Ave. were greeted Monday through Thursday with water, cereal bars, and even breakfast sandwiches! Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Rosie Bingham and the Dean of Students, Dr. Petersen, also joined in on the fun. They both took time to shake hands and welcome all the friendly faces.

On Friday, students received free ice cream sundaes featuring an array of toppings. They also had a chance to tour the ACSS office. Talk about a way to beat the heat and celebrate surviving the first week of classes.

We were also thrilled to meet many adult learners and commuter students at the “Start Your Day with Us” event and the “Commuter Chill-Out.” We encourage you to continue to visit with us in room 243 in the UC. From training seminars to our two student organizations, the Commuter Student Association and the Adult Student Association, our office provides ways for you to enjoy the college experience outside of the classroom.

Meet the ASA and CSA Presidents

Jason McLemore, ASA President 2011-2012

Jason McLemore is a lot like other adult students.

If you asked him if he constantly has to juggle multiple tasks, he would reply, “yes.” If you asked him if he ever had to make a big career change, he would say, “that’s why I’m at the university.” If you asked him if he has ever been faced with a difficult challenge surrounding being an adult learner he would respond, “of course.”

All these experiences makes the senior Nursing student a great fit for leadership within the Adult Student Association.

McLemore truly sees the potential in the organization.

“I am excited about being president because I am seeing the benefit of being involved on campus and I want to share this message with other adult students,” McLemore said.

Along with sharing that message, he wants to make sure he grows the organization in new ways.

“I would love to see our number of members increase,” McLemore said. “ I think that once people understand the benefit of what we do, they see how important this community is.”

Holly Stanford, CSA President 2011-2012

Holly Stanford bleeds blue. You could say from the time she was born, she knew where she would go to college .

“For me, there was no other option than to become a Memphis Tiger,” Stanford said. “I went to my first Tiger football game when I was just 2 weeks old!”

The Memphis Tiger spirit that lives within the senior Business Management student is what drives her to take on campus leadership roles like her new position as president of the Commuter Student Association.

“I’ve been very involved in school with different organizations and philanthropies,” Stanford said. “The CSA has always held a place in my heart. As president, I’m excited to express my passion for commuter students and help get them involved and integrated into our campus.”

So just how does Stanford plan to get them involved?

Well, as someone who knows first hand the challenges commuter students face, she has some insight on what will be the best plan of action.

One way he plans to build awareness of ASA is to do more community related projects around the city. This kind of service to others has always been a part of his motivation for success.

“As a commuter, it is really up to us to step out of our box to make friends, interact with peers, go to events, and find out what’s going on,” Stanford said. “The CSA wants to make sure commuters have information about what’s going on around campus. CSA wants to connect with other student organizations and continue to provide e-mails and flyers to commuters about campus activities.”

“I have been called the Motivational Machine by my coworkers,” McLemore said. “Service to others and being helpful is a driving force in my dedication to succeed.”

So in between your busy schedules as a commuter student, come seek out Stanford. She will be sure to keep you connected.

The kind of ambition and commitment to others McLemore has speaks volumes. It also reveals that for the 2011-2012 school year, the ASA is definitely in good hands.

Tips on How to Be A Commuter-Friendly Faculty Member

Schedule office hours close to class times and offer options to schedule meetings outside of office hours if needed.

Consider providing in-class time for students to work on group projects. Coordinating schedules of several students whose work and other responsibilities conflict can be difficult and stressful.

Use care in scheduling review sessions. Commuter students may not be able to attend at times that do not coincide with their normal schedule. Avoid last-minute scheduling or time changes.

Distribute class rosters that include telephone numbers and e-mail addresses so students may easily contact classmates. Include telephone numbers complete with area code.

Notify students of research and job opportunities in your department and college. Hire commuter students.

Include inclement weather policy on the syllabus. Tell students how you will inform them when you cancel class and encourage them to sign up for TigerText.

Use technology to communicate with students including e-mail, blogs, e-courseware, Twitter and Facebook.

8.

Take a commuter student to lunch; offer to serve as a mentor.

9.

Remember that commuter students use many forms of transportation to campus, some of which they do not control. Fixed public transportation schedules, reliance on others for rides, and car problems can cause last-minute delays or absence.

10. Be aware that many commuter students have children. Inform them of the University’s childcare resources and refer them to the U of M Child Development Center: http://www.memphis.edu/childcareweb/.

How to Survive Your First Semester of College Entering your first semester college you can feel a variety of emotions. You will undoubtedly face new challenges, but these few tips and tricks will help you prepare for the exciting ride.

SET YOUR SCHEDULE. Once you have selected your classes for the semester, grab a planner and make a schedule. Be sure to add in class, study, and fun time to your calendar.

BE HEALTHY. This may not seem extremely important, but your diet can affect your overall well-being. You will be studying a lot more and in order to be alert you should pick healthy foods and take a little time to exercise. A healthy you is a happy you.

BE SAFE. You may spend a lot of time on campus, including late nights. Remember to always be aware of your surroundings and don’t be afraid to contact campus security if you ever feel uncomfortable.

ASK FOR HELP. U of M offers an abundance of services from counseling to subject tutoring. If you are struggling with anything, don’t be afraid to ask for help. The ACSS is even here to point you in the right direction.

GET INVOLVED. One of the best aspects of college is that you get to try new things and meet new people. U of M student affairs offers an abundance of leadership opportunities from volunteering to going Greek. Take a little time to research and see what opportunities may be of interest to you.

REMEMBER YOU ARE A STUDENT. You may find yourself enjoying university life so much that your classes become a side item. Remember in order to continue to enjoy what you like about college life so much, you have to make the grades to stay there.

CHANGE IS OKAY. After your first semester, you will probably realize you are not the same person you were when you entered college. Be prepared for your schedule to change, the friends you have to change, and your perspective on things to change. Embrace it.

The mission of the Adult & Commuter Student Services office is to provide a supportive environment for nontraditional and commuter students that promotes intellectual, social and academic growth and development through services and programs that foster lifelong learning.

The Adult and Commuter Student Services office is located on The University of Memphis campus in the University Center RM 243. Our regular hours are 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday. If you need after hours help, please call us to make arrangements.
