Jane Clement-Boggis and her husband, Garry, came up with the simple yet extremely effective and fun idea after Garry had repeatedly been tripping over a broom placed across a doorway. Sleepytot came to life in 2010 with the creation of a bunny comforter that could have up to four dummies attached to it. The bunnies allow babies and toddlers to learn, very quickly, that their dummy is never too far away if it gets lost in the night and encourages them to find it by themselves. Julie took a big step to get to where she is today. Developing the Sleepytot business gave her the opportunity to work from home and focus on her own children when they needed her most. To kick-start Sleepytot’s success, Julie needed an endorsement from someone who really believed in her products. When teaching your child in the water make sure your eye level is the same as your child's and always maintain a smile – kids pick up on negativity and angst so remember to reinforce the positive and never use negative comments. Royal Merchant Navy Education Foundation: A unique player in the third sector Seafarers’ charity seeking to grow its beneficiary numbers by 700%

Royal Merchant Navy Education Foundation (RMNEF), the charity which provides educational support to the children of Merchant Navy, Fishing and RNLI seafaring families in need, is on a mission to bring its ‘funds-to-beneficiary’ ratio into balance and provide more aid than ever before.

Holding a unique position in the third sector, the charity is now looking to widen its support network to achieve a sixfold increase in its beneficiary numbers within the next five years, through capitalising on some of its property assets.

Following its motto, that ‘Education is the Foundation’, the RMNEF works alongside other not-for-profit organisations within the sector to enable ‘Foundationers’ to obtain professional, career-entry qualifications for future employment.

The British educational charity for the children of Merchant Navy seafarers is supporting a young person in Fraserburgh. After fishing at sea, Iona Taylor’s father returned home and suffered a heart attack that left him with a brain injury and so, to enable her to fulfil her

dream of completing her education, the RMNEF is providing her with a car to make her travel between home and the University in Aberdeen easier.

Accepting the car, Iona said: “Having this car will make my travel from home to Aberdeen so much easier and I am extremely grateful to the RMNEF for their support ”.

Reading with Children at Home It is unrealistic to expect teachers to listen to children read at school on their own very often. Assuming it takes 7-8 minutes for a teacher to hear a child read individually, it would take approximately 4 hours to hear a class of 30 children, which is almost a whole school day. This is arguably not the most effective use of a teacher’s time. It is therefore up to parents to ensure lots of reading gets done at home. Research carried out by the Save the Children ‘Read On. Get On.’ Campaign* has found that parents can make a huge positive impact on children’s ability to read – even if it is for just 10 minutes a day. Ideally, reading should be part of an everyday routine, as much as brushing teeth is. If it is a ‘normal’ thing to do, then incentives shouldn’t be needed and equally, reading won’t be seen as a chore. Children also need access to interesting,

good quality reading books, at the correct level of difficulty. Most schools have a home - school book lending system, but they can be a bit ‘hit and miss.’ Children sometimes forget to change their reading books, or might be restricted to changing their books on certain days. There are also the long school holidays without any books at all. As a teacher and a mum, I became frustrated when I did not have enough suitable reading books at home when my son was learning to read. After buying a few extra books, to supplement those borrowed from school, I was struck by the expense, especially as they were finished with so quickly. The idea of Reading Chest began – to make reading scheme books for children more accessible and affordable to read at home. Reading Chest is a through-the-post book rental service for children, specialising in reading scheme books for 4 to 9 year olds and works along similar lines to DVD rental companies. For a monthly fee, members receive regular deliveries of books at their reading level from Reading Chest’s extensive selection of reading schemes including Bug Club, Treetops, Oxford Reading Tree, Project X, Rigby Star and Collins Big Cat. These include both fiction and non-fiction titles. Children learn in different ways and enjoy different types of books. Many children, particularly boys engage better with non-fiction books, which are often harder to come by in a school lending library than the well known Biff, Chip and Kipper

stories. There are so many fantastic reading schemes, which are not widely available to parents if their own child’s school doesn’t have them. Reading Chest offers this variety and provides advice to guide parents through their child’s reading journey. Each book delivery comes complete with a pre-paid return envelope, making it easy for even the busiest of parents to provide their children with some great choices for their daily dose of reading. Whether they are active or reluctant readers, children won’t be able to resist opening their own regular postal delivery of books. Monthly membership starts from £9.95 and all new members receive a book bag, a bookmark, a reward chart and stickers to encourage their reading. Certificates are also available to download from the Reading Chest website and budding literary critics can see their own book reviews published online. Regular reading with children at home is so important. Don’t let yourself get lazy just because nothing comes home in the book bag one day. A Great Adventure After 6 months of hard work, a group of students led by Teacher Jonathan Baron, performed at Autismâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Got Talent in May; and this is their storyâ&#x20AC;Ś The students had spent over 6 months preparing their performance that they showcased at Autism's Got Talent this year, they all have dance on their timetables at school and so work on the piece whenever they are with me for lessons. Closer to the show we were practicing every day in order to get them feeling confident and ready for the main performance. We performed in front of the school too at school assemblies to get them used to people watching them when they dance. On the actual day of the show, surprisingly the majority of students were eager and couldn't wait to get on stage in front of almost 700 people. They had been building up to the day and practicing so much that I think they felt fully prepared that they knew what they were doing and because of that their mood was once of excitement and anticipation before the show.

This required a lot of teamwork and many students that took part would usually struggle to work with others, over exceeded themselves in working together to bring together what they managed to. I think this just goes to show that given the right context these autistic students are more than capable of achieving what the rest of the world doubts what they would be able to do.

Autism’s Got Talent TOOK TO THE LONDON STAGE ON SATURDAY 9TH MAY AT THE MERMAID THEATRE

The Pineapple Performing Arts School and Anna Kennedy Online have joined forces to co-produce this extravaganza of singing, dancing and music to show the world just how talented a group of people with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome can be. The Theatre buzzed with anticipation as the evening began and a full house slowly settled into their seats for the first act, which was a musical performance of House of the Rising sun, by the Hassocks All-stars Blues Band. They were seven students, fronted by an excellent female singer, who got everyone in the mood. Some of the other acts performing were Pineapple Performing Arts, who gave an amazing dance to Hard Knock Life from Annie. Then time for a soulful and emotive song by Bradley Turner, who sung Time to Say Goodbye. It was obvious to the audience that Bradley was a born performer. His vocal range was effortless, and he was rewarded by the first standing ovation of the night. The crowd were eager for the next act and Michael Alexander gave himself a humorous introduction before dedicating ‘Cavatina’ by Stanley Myers to his late Nan whom he clearly admired very much, and played a beautiful version of it on acoustic guitar. Callum aged just eight years old and from Russia, came on and with his cheeky

face and great speed and daring, he performed a crowd pleasing Break Dance to: Turn Down For What. Cullum dreams to one day dance with Diversity and with a performance like that, we can expect his dream to come true with a few more years under his belt. Joshua Bateup was a huge favourite with the audience, singing: ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ by Keane. He really has the sweetest voice, and the beautiful simplicity of his voice completely overwhelmed the audience. Near the end of his song, Joshua was shocked to receive a standing ovation before he’d finished the last verse; such was the emotion in his voice. But like a true professional, he carried on to the last note to the delight of the crowd. Joshua wants to be a full time Author one day, but we have a feeling that his talent at singing, may take him in another direction… Autism with Attitude was an exciting dance troupe. They performed in a variety of dance styles to a mixed tape. It was very upbeat, and the audience needed no persuasion to get up on their feet,

and dance where they were, there were funny, original, and cheeky moves. It started with three or four dancers on stage and continued to surprise the audience as more and more members appeared on stage. There was a brilliant ‘sub plot storyline’ to the dance, with a hilarious routine of two of the dancers competing for the limelight spots throughout the performance. Aston Avery – who had just passed his Grade Three ballet exam, sang a rousing version of ‘Caught in a Trap’ by Elvis. Young Patrons of Charity were then introduced to the audience on stage. Ryan Wiggins, age 14, still made an appearance and did a very grown-up and funny, speech about autism. He took jokes from hosts on the chin making everyone laugh as well as cry. He showed us a very mature young man, who embraces his autism. Corinna Kampalis performing to an audience for only her second time, did a brilliant performance as Elsa from Frozen, as she sang ‘Let it Go’.

Kaner Scott. Was made homeless at 16, but fought his way to the semi-finals of ‘Got To Dance’, wowed the audience in the first few seconds of his dance act. The audience was captivated with his unique dance style that he called ‘flexi’. We think he will certainly make further appearances in other places in the future. Each act was introduced by various personalities and celebrities that included: Steven Smith, Jake Wood, Nicola Duffet, Debbie Moore OBE of Pineapple Dance Studios, and George Gilbey of Goggle-box and others. Even the Interval was buzzing with atmosphere, as the celebrities mingled with the audience and performers. Jake Wood, Robin Windsor and George Gilbey were particularly chatty, with photos and signatures all over the place, laughing with members of the audience and performers. During the Second Act, The Autistix Rock Band got everyone moving. With a blastingly good performance, and their Guitarist high fived Anna Kennedy at the end. There was a talk from Steven Smith that was inspirational, passionate, and moving. (Even if he accidentally swore) about bullying. There was an impromptu moment after he got so passionate that he walked off stage after saying his piece that he had to run back on stage to introduce the next act.

Luke Dolphin treated the theatre audience to some amazing guitar playing. No singing, just an inspiring guitar solo. Definitely a new rock star in the making there, and another standing ovation from the crowd. Thomas Puttock – was a real theatrical performer; perfect for the Wes End shows. He performed ‘Friend Like Me’ from Aladdin, with some great acting. He was a brilliant impressionist and perfect as a tribute to Robin Williams. The other performers of the evening were: Aaron Yorke, Bekah Cook, Calvin Glen, Pineapple Performing Arts, and Lauren Lovejoy; who all gave excellent performances that delighted the audience, and really showed that Autism is certainly not a condition that precludes enormous talent in all these young people. Last on stage was the Finale, and it was a treat to see Anna and Robin performing their famous Charleston, live, to this audience, who had previously only seen it on the People’s Strictly on TV. They were dazzling, confident and delivered it with style. Everyone could see that they both enjoyed every minute of their dance, and their infectious smiles, whipped the audience up into a huge applause and standing ovation. It truly was a great ending to an unbelievable and spectacular show. One that every single performer can be proud of for the rest of their lives. The whole evening will go a long way towards bringing a new kind of awareness and knowledge about accepting all people on the Autism Spectrum, as valuable contributors to our communities, and our society. Robin: For me as well, we had a great connection. As the weeks progressed we’ve become closer and now the fun factor’s kicking in. I’d say you were inspirational, hard-working and dedicated.

What was the relationship between Robin Windsor and Anna Kennedy during their time together as dancing partners on the recent Strictly series? Here is the inside gossip on what it’s really like for a non dancer to be thrown into the world of the fabulous dancers; and what the professionals feel like having to rely on a novice performer out there on the stage…. Robin Windsor and Anna Kennedy Strictly dance partners A conversation was recorded between them, on the day before a costume fitting, and reveals that they became good friends, with a high regard and respect for each other in their own fields: Anna: We make a really good team. When we’re dancing together, our footwork – it’s almost like our feet are talking to each other – it’s synchronised.

Anna: You’ve taught me how to have fun. There’s an aura about you that makes me feel relaxed when I’m with you. Can I say that? And a great dancer! Robin: In other words, I’m just wonderful. Cool, that’s what I’m looking for. You only sleep three hours a night – where do you get your energy from? I’ve never met anybody who can function on such little sleep. Anna: I don’t even know myself. It’s like I’ve got some fiery stuff inside of me that makes me keep going. I think it’s probably my boys as well, they need me. Robin: Speaking of your boys Patrick and Angelo, what are your caring responsibilities for them? Anna: With Angelo, it’s 24-hour care. He has no sense of danger whatsoever, so I have to make sure the cooker is switched off underneath because he likes the glow of the rings. I have to lock the front door because if not, he’ll go out wandering. At night time he wets the bed still at 22 so I have to change the sheets. As for Patrick, his levels of anxiety can get quite high even though he’s very able and a clever young man. For example; because I wasn’t there yesterday, the boiler had gone off. I was getting text after text – the boiler’s not working, there’s no hot water, can you come home and fix it? It just never stops.

Robin: What’s been the most unexpected thing you’ve found in taking part? Anna: That I can have fun. I didn’t think it was possible. Because I feel like I always have to be on the ball all the time, at home, in my job – I’m always, facilitating things… Robin: We’re going to be recreating our Charleston at your Autism’s Got Talent. Once you’re in that Strictly bubble, you are in it for life. I’ve always felt that growing up, when things were going particularly badly for me, I always relied on my dancing to give me that piece of freedom that we all need once in a while. So finally, who do think is the most proud of what you’re doing right now? Anna: Probably the autism community. I don’t know how many messages they’ve sent saying how proud they are that I’m flying the flag for autism. My sister’s noticed that in photographs I have that sparkle in my eye. She said it’s about time. Robin Windsor was one of the professional dancers on The People’s Strictly for Comic Relief and Anna Kennedy was his dance partner. Anna set up a school for autistic children after her sons were turned away from 26 schools and offered five hours of home tuition a week. Hillingdon Manor school is the largest of its kind in Europe.
