t’s been a long, long time since Lexington’s J. Peterman store closed on Richmond Road and it’s been even longer since Seinfeld went off the air, after actor John O’Hurley immortalized a fictionalized version of the Lexington retail impresario, playing Elaine’s eccentric boss as a kind of cross between Hemingway and Ralph Lauren. It was the ‘90s when Oprah proclaimed, “this is my favorite, favorite catalog!”

The real John Peterman doesn’t disappoint in real life if you’re looking for an echo of what inspired the Seinfeld character. Asked to recall the scariest thing that’s ever happened on a buying trip, he says, “Leaving Lima, Peru on Delta jet bound for Atlanta, approaching takeoff speed, pilot reverses engine, stands on brakes. We skid to a halt yards before the

The success of the current J. Peterman Kickstarter campaign (just south of $70k at press) suggests longtime fans fondly recall the ‘90s heights and that new fans are climbing aboard, as they crowdfund a mod flapper dress, a motorcycle jacket, and an item the real Peterman resisted for years, the urban sombrero (heretofore existing only as a Seinfeld plot point). The campaign wraps up in May, and the goal is set at $500,000. As is true of all Kickstarter projects, “if a project isn’t successfully funded, no one pays anything.” The premiums don’t have to be disbursed unless the goal is met ($8,600 gets you a buying trip with Peterman himself if you’ll spring for the airfare) — so, win or lose, the once infamous catalog company has achieved a free media blitz that would make Jeff Bezos blush with schoolgirl envy.

Kickstarter seemed a logical choice for the funding of a potential retail resurrection, as Peterman has long candidly admitted, he was never much of

a hit with traditional financiers anyway (a fact that is good-naturedly satirized in the Kickstarter video). Expanding too quickly from successful catalog operations to include 15 brick and mortar stores was widely cited as a factor in the failure of the first iteration of the brand. When the company went bankrupt in 1999, he briefly lost the rights to his brand and his name when it was purchased by the Paul Harris company. Peterman later bought the name back after Paul Harris went under — approaching well-capitalized friends like O’Hurley to invest. John Peterman is president and founder. It has been an online retail company since. Son Matt Peterman is a copywriter for the brand.

He’s frank about why he felt the need for Kickstarter. “For one reason or another, I haven’t been as involved in the business in the past three or four years as I should have been. During that time, the company almost slipped into mediocrity. That’s losing your edge.”

The Petermans have been in Lexington nearly 40 years. John and wife Audrey are known as much for their status as community-minded neighbors and

devoted grandparents as they are retail tycoons. (Their Easter table, set with Peterman plates, glasses, and furniture, is a holiday wonder on Facebook.) If you’re shopping in Lexington, you’re likely to run into Peterman himself at “Fresh Market, Critchfield, Liquor Barn.” Daughter Robyn Peterman Zahn is a popular writer and former actress. And if you’ve often thought “hey that guy in the carpool lane looks just like actor Steve Zahn,” it’s because it probably is Steve Zahn. He’s married to Robyn. The two are longtime supporters of Lexington’s theatre scene, and have been known to produce a show or two.

he internet has been littered with dozens of “Peterman is back!” stories since the 1999 bankruptcy. He says, “Even after the bankruptcy, I never considered folding my tent ... I’ve had plenty of bad moments but have never considered not recovering.”

Next year will be the 30th anniversary of the first duster sold, the coat that sparked the birth of the J. Peterman company.

Asked how he will commemorate the

FEATURE milestone, he says, “I’m not much into celebrations, however I do pay attention to my wedding anniversary or my wife’s birthday.”

The former Pittsburgh Pirates farm hand got the wheels turning in 1987 with the first sale of a horseman’s duster he’d discovered in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

He famously founded the company with $500 and a $20,000 unsecured loan. The iconic drawings that are the hallmark of “The Owner’s Manual?”

He explains, “We couldn’t afford photography so we used art.”

He and his friend, the late Don Haley (who would go on to write the famous copy), placed an ad in the Lexington paper. They sold one duster, but their instincts told them they could sell more.

The strategy began to pay off when an ad they ran in The New Yorker sold more than 50 coats.

But it was still a shell game, always just one step ahead of purchasing the inventory and paying the printer to get the catalogs out to the consumers.

Their office shared a building with another iconic Kentucky brand, Hall’s Beer Cheese (Peterman then worked in food/marketing consultancy). He recalls, “In the early days I had been fired from a job so I did what you do when you don’t have a job, I became a consultant to make some money.

And, because I’m an entrepreneur, I bought half of Hall’s Beer Cheese, and I started J. Peterman upstairs.”

Beer cheese downstairs, horseman’s dusters upstairs. Hall’s eventually sold, but the dusters endured.

The business came to life with a handful of items in the iconic Owner’s Manual. The six words Peterman used to sum up the business — “unique,” “authentic,” “romantic,” “journey,” “wondrous,” and “excellent” - could be ascribed to almost any item in the catalog. He says today, “These are the words.

They are the reason we’re going Kickstarter, to get back to using these words.”

His curatorial style/shopping/ buying philosophy is simple, “I put myself in circumstances where I think there are a lot of interesting things, but if I see a new idea I’ll know it.”

At its height, revenue soared to $75 million, perhaps growing too fast —

without a sustainable team in place that entirely understood the different challenges posed by brick and mortars versus catalog commerce.

At the 2015 Emerge conference in Lexington, Peterman told a group of entrepreneurs that he’d underestimated the impact of the internet, and he’d spent “a great deal more time thinking about how retail can work, and should work, on the Internet.”

He elaborates on that today, adding, “Retail shopping should be an experience, not a ‘checkout process.’”

Now, he says, “I’m an old soul (literally and figuratively). I believe in the handwritten letter, the pocket watch, and the face to face. I think (Winston) Churchill knew a thing or two. I also own a cell phone and I am fully aware the internet is real. I’m also too concerned with remaining relevant to disregard the ways of our technological world. My point? I’m no dinosaur waxing philosophical about what it was like when I grew up, walking uphill, backwards, in 30 feet of snow. Many of our daily functions can be achieved from behind a keyboard. You can date, buy groceries, and even go to college online. This is not new news. Let’s move on.”

Will millennials embrace that?

Peterman’s core customers in the ‘90s were 35 to 55 year olds. Those customers would now be 55 to 75, so a new generation will have to embrace the brand – a generation of digital natives who probably don’t believe in the pocket watch and the handwritten letter.

He says, “[They’re] not really different — same hopes, desires, curiosity, and appreciation – they just don’t realize it yet.”

The J. Peterman business really came to life with a duster and a New Yorker ad, followed by the iconic Owner’s Manual. The rumor then was that print was already dead.

From the vantage point of 30 years in, does Peterman believe print is finally dead?

“No, print is not dead,” he says.

“Everything goes in cycles. Today’s world is made up of 140 character sound bites. Like the fashion world, everything goes around in a circle.

You just have to stay in the game.”

There is none.

John O’Hurley would not be my first choice. A young Kevin Costner or Tom Hanks, but I’m really uncomfortable about this because I doubt there will ever be a movie about my life.

Marriott Hotels kicked off its national Bourbon Battle competition in Lexington on April 14. The competition will head to Portland, Calgary, and Boston before culminating in New York City on National Bourbon Day. The winners of the four local battles will battle it out against each other in NYC. Griffin Gate bartender Ashley Sherrow was the winner of the Lexington Bourbon Battle; she was selected by a panel of judges including Jane Bowie, Matthew Carroll, and Master Distiller David Scheurich.

BurgerFi opened its first Kentucky location at Fayette Mall on 141 Rojay Drive. BurgerFi is a contemporary burger chain featuring burgers without any chemicals or additives that are free from steroids, antibiotics, and growth hormones. They also offer handmade onion rings, Vegefi burgers, and craft beer and wine. The new Lexington location will include chairs made entirely from upcycled Coke bottles, tables from compressed recycled wood, and ceiling fans that conserve electricity.

Lexington Craft Beer Week kicks off May 13 and runs through May 22. It features special events, tappings, and tastings at breweries around Lexington, including Blue Stallion, Country Boy, Ethereal, HopCat, and West Sixth.

Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe opened in Lexington in April on 117 Southland Drive. Taziki’s is a 54-restaurant chain. (Fresh Capital Acquisitions, also associated with Taziki’s outlets in Tennessee, bought the former Lynn’s Paradise Cafe in Louisville in March.)

The West Sixth Greenroom on 109 W. Main Street is expected to open in time for Craft Beer Week. The Greenroom is a “nanobrewery” concept: it will operate on an even smaller scale than West Sixth, which will allow it to experiment with a variety of specialty beers. Plans are that it will only be open late afternoon and late night on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

The 2016 Taste of the Bluegrass is at Keeneland on Friday, May 20 starting at 7 pm. Central Kentucky food, beverages, live music, and a silent auction all in one place.

The 2015 Taste of the Bluegrass generated almost $150,000 for God’s Pantry Food Bank.

Craft Brews and Food Fest at the Lexington Convention Center on May 21. 50 breweries and 175 beers will showcase their craft brews. There will also be an expanded food section, including Clawdaddy’s, Noodles & Co., JDI, and Travinia Italian Kitchen. All breweries will once again be competing in the Commonwealth Cup: a competition headed by an international panel of expert judges that awards the best craft brew of the year.

And one for the future: it has been announced Lexington Restaurant Week will be back in town July 21 - 30. Local chefs will once again cook up a prix-fixe, multi-course dinner for the entire week. This year, one dollar of every special meal will go to LexArts.

It’s widely believed that sometime between the 1893 and 1899 Derby races Jennie Carter Benedict, the celebrated Louisville caterer, restaurant owner, cookbook author, and businesswoman, created her iconic Benedictine spread for crustless tea sandwiches. After graduating from Fannie Farmer’s Boston Cooking School, Benedict returned to Kentucky in 1893 and opened a catering kitchen in her back yard. Eventually, she became so successful that she moved her business in 1900 to downtown Louisville and opened a restaurant/tearoom. As her restaurant flourished, she became a powerful businesswoman, active humanitarian, and cookbook author. Her Blue Ribbon Cookbook was first published in 1902 and went on to be reprinted several times, most recently in 2008. For unknown reasons, her recipe for Benedictine didn’t appear in her Blue Ribbon Cookbook until the 2008 reprinted edition. While some of her recipes have fallen out of favor, some are still staples on Kentucky tables. Her recipe for Benedictine put her on the map and has stood the test of time. Along with mint juleps, country ham biscuits, and chocolate pecan bourbon pies, Benedictine is a Kentucky Derby tradition.

In its purest form, Benedictine is a simple blend of cucumber juice, onion juice, cream cheese, and cayenne served on crustless white bread. Sure, it’s gotten dolled up over the years with the addition of bacon, grated

cucumber, grated onion, or watercress.

Some folks thin it out with mayo for dipping or smear it onto dark rye. While trimming the bread crusts might seem a little old school and fussy, I’m down with old school and fussy. I kept it pure and simple, gilded the lily a bit, and turned it inside out.

Open-Faced Benedictine Finger Sandwiches - Plain old white bread.

Although just about any white sandwich bread would be fine, a simple scratch made white sandwich bread has a firmer crumb and texture.

I added one tablespoon active dry yeast, one tablespoon sugar, and 1/2 cup warm water to the bowl of a stand mixer.

When it became foamy and alive, I added three cups Weisenberger Mill all purpose flour and 1 teaspoon salt. After incorporating the yeast and flour together with a wooden spoon, I added two cups warm water, one stick softened unsalted butter, and 3 1/2 cups additional flour.

I blended the mix, attached a dough hook to the mixer, and let it work for thee minutes before scraping down the sides, setting the speed to medium, and the letting it rip for 10 minutes. When the shaggy dough turned smooth and tacky, I turned it out onto a bread board, kneaded it by hand for a few minutes, smoothed the dough into a ball, placed it into a buttered bowl, covered it with a dish towel, and set it aside until it

doubled in size.

After two hours, I punched down the dough, divided it in half with a bench scraper, and worked each half into 9 x 5 rectangles. I folded each rectangle into thirds, placed them seam side down into 2 buttered 8 x 4 metal baking pans, tucked in the edges, covered the pans with a dish towel, and set them aside.

When the loaves doubled in size, I slid them onto the middle rack of a pre-heated 375 degree oven for 30 minutes. When the crusts were honey brown, I pulled them from the oven, turned them out onto a wire rack, and let them cool to room temperature.

Down the stretch... - Benedictine.

To green or not to green? Truth be told, I haven’t a shred of moral objection to green food coloring. I simply have lingering angst from far too many over tinted and over minted chocolate mint cakes served up to me as a kid back on the farm in Western Kentucky, so I omitted the green food coloring and used what is considered to be Jennie Benedict’s original old fashioned recipe reprinted in Winning Bluegrass Recipes: A Cookbook, published in 1985.

After peeling and chopping a medium sized cucumber, I pureed the pieces in a food processor, scooped the pulp into double lined cheesecloth, and squeezed the juice into a small bowl. Without cleaning the bowl of the processor, I repeated the process with a peeled, halved, and chopped medium sized onion. I added 3 tablespoons of the cucumber juice and 2 tablespoons of the onion juice to 8 ounces softened cream cheese and mashed it together with the times of a fork until it was somewhat

smooth. After seasoning the Benedictine with a pinch of salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, I briefly blitzed the mix with a handheld blender until it was light and creamy.

I sliced the fresh white bread into 1/2” slices and spread generous amounts of Benedictine onto each slice, smoothing it out to the ends of the crusts.

After thinly slicing 2 large unpeeled English cucumbers on a mandolin (a vegetable peeler would have done the job), I cut them in half lengthwise and shingled the slices across the bread on a diagonal, overlapping the peeled ends over the centers until each bread slice was covered.

Using a very sharp knife, I cut the crusts from the bread and sliced each piece in half before finishing with shaved radishes and Gary Farm pea tendrils.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): I watched a video of a helicopter pilot as he descended from the sky and tried to land his vehicle on the small deck of a Danish ship patrolling the North Sea. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Zugzwang” is a German-derived word used in chess and other games. It refers to a predicament in which a player cannot possibly make a good move. Every available option will weaken his or her position.

I propose that we coin a new word that means the opposite of zugzwang: “zugfrei,” which shall hereafter signify a situation in which every choice you have in front of you is a positive or constructive one; you cannot make a wrong move.

I think this captures the essence of the coming days for you, Scorpio.

Home and Garden

May 4 Take guided walks through the gardens at The Arboretum. Jesse Dahl, Arboretum horticulturist, will lead you on a guided walk highlighting plants of particular interest at the time of each tour. Tours start at the Arboretum Visitor Center and last one hour and start at 11 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month (May 4 and 18; and June 1 and 15). Cost is $3 per person. Limit of 25 people per tour.

In May, the tours will feature roses and irises and in June flowering shrubs and long-lived perennials will be spotlighted.

Wild Ones Plant Exchange and Fundraiser at St. Michael’s Church parking lot on 2025 Bellefonte Drive at 7 pm. The plant exchange fundraiser will feature seeds, perennials, grasses, sedges, shrubs, trees, and vines all native to the eastern United States.

If you don’t have a plant to exchange, you’re encouraged to bring finger food, beer, wine, or other food or drink.

May 7 The Arboretum will host the Friends Plant Exchange Saturday, May 7. Plants and garden items are to be delivered at 9 a.m.

The exchange begins promptly at 10 a.m. The cost is $2 and friends are free.

May 8 Wilson’s Nurseries will be hosting a Mothers’

May 12 Growing Great Tomatoes at the Fayette County Extension Service on 1140 Red Mile Place at 6:30 pm.

The class focuses on summer vegetables, covering everything from technique to disease prevention. Each class member will take home a hybrid tomato and an open pollinated heirloom for his or her own mini trial.

May 19 Perennial Hibiscus at the Fayette County Exten-

sion Service at 10 am. Often called “dinner plate” hibiscus because of its giant flowers, perennial hibiscus have been around for a long time. Only in recent years have breeders turned their attention to making better varieties, with improvements including shorter plants, unique dark foliage, and new colors that bloom for longer. Participants will receive a nice assortment of easy-to-grow varieties to take home.

May 21 Art in Bloom Weekend includes Gala at Apiary on 218 Jefferson Street at 7 pm. This year’s Gala honors famous Lexingtonians Jon Carloftis and Dale Fisher, known throughout the Bluegrass and beyond

for their fine gardens. The Art in Bloom GALA helps to support a diverse program of exhibitions, lectures, workshops, family programs, and the Free Admission policy. It features a sit down dinner, auction, entertainment, and recognition of individuals who have made a significant contribution to the UK Art Museum and the arts ecology of our region and beyond.. Kitchen Tours of the Bluegrass will be on May 21-22. The tours will benefit the Child Development Center of the Bluegrass. The annual self-guided kitchen tour will highlight unique kitchens in Lexington homes.

The Arboretum will host Addie’s Day on Saturday, May 21 and will feature free admission to the Kentucky Children’s Garden from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy this special fun day for the whole family with pony rides, games, refreshments and more in memory of Adelaide Kennedy McReynolds.

May 22 This year, The Arboretum will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The Arboretum will also honor those they call the Founders with a special event Sunday, May 22 from 2 until 4 p.m.

Each year, The Arboretum hosts the Founders Lecture series. The organization recently held a Founders Valentine Tea and there will be a Founders Day event in May.
