UNIT

About Our Unit

Patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit are at risk for neuromuscular weakness, often severe, for numerous reasons. The underlying disease process, being bedridden and inactive, inflammation, electrolyte abnormalities, and medication side effects can lead to changes in the nerves and/or muscles, resulting in a diminution of strength and functioning that may last for months, even years. Until recently, it was thought that prolonged inactivity, often with heavy sedation in patients who receive mechanical ventilation, was necessary to safely administer the advanced therapies required to increase the chance of survival.

In the past, the focus on rehabilitation of survivors of critical illness began after they had left the ICU and often continued after hospital discharge at inpatient rehabilitation facilities. New studies demonstrate that the severity of impairment can be diminished by increasing mobility of the patient while still in the ICU. Jefferson Methodist Hospital has initiated a multidisciplinary program to minimize sedation and increase patient engagement in exercise while still in the Critical Care Unit, even while still on a mechanical ventilator. Initiating such a program early in the patient’s ICU stay can nearly double the chance a patient will function independently at hospital discharge. Other benefits include decreased time on the ventilator, less delirium, and increased probability the patient will be discharged to the home rather than a rehabilitation facility or nursing home.

How You Can Help!

Proceeds from the 13th Annual Methodist Hospital Foundation Fashion Fundraiser go toward the acquisition of exercise equipment tailored to the unique demands and limitations of the critically ill patient. This would include a leg and/or arm ergometer that can be used by patients in the recumbent position in a hospital bed. We also plan to purchase a specialized walker that could accommodate transport of a ventilator, oxygen tank, and IV.

About Our Team

Faculty and staff of the Jane and Leonard Korman Respiratory Institute are committed to improving the health of patients suffering with respiratory diseases and critical illness. The fashion fundraiser, and the exercise equipment initiative it benefits, advance the mission of Jefferson Methodist Hospital to improve care and achieve better health outcomes for the community we serve.

If you would like to make an appointment, please call our office at 215-955-5161. You may also speak with a call center representative at 1-800-JEFF-NOW (1-800-533-3669) for more information.

We would like to thank and recognize the Methodist Hospital Foundation Board and Fashion Show Committee for their continued support!
