The 2015 Beef Tour was held August 25th-28th. Fifty of Accelerated Genetics’ top representatives from 16 states toured some of the Midwest’s finest farms and ranches. More weaning weight, cow longevity and postpartum recovery time are some of the benefits of timed artificial insemination. When it comes to measuring the success of fixed time artificial insemination (FTAI), Cliff Lamb, assistant director of the North Florida Research and Education Center (NFREC) says, “I’m not so sure that pregnancy rate to artificial insemination is all that important…My goal is the percentage of cows that become pregnant in the first 30 days of the breeding season. That is probably the most important economic indicator we have in our operation.” The NFREC is a research and education campus for the University of Florida. They run their cowherd as a commercial operation, but they shifted from breeding cows via natural service to FTAI giving every female the opportunity to become pregnant through AI.

Overall season-ending pregnancy rates were 81%-86% before they started synchronizing and using fixed-time AI seven years ago. Those rates are 92% to 94% the past three years. Each year, the calving season gets shorter. “In five years, we’ve essentially gone down from a 120day breeding season to a 70-day season, and all cows are eligible to be artificially inseminated on the first day of breeding season,” Lamb explains. More than the technology, the NFREC underscores the importance of establishing and adhering to realistic management and selection criteria, relative to the goals, environment and resources of each operation. These are the rules Lamb established and has stuck to for the past seven breeding seasons: •
Every cow will calve by the time she is 24 months of age

Must have a calf every 365 days
•
Must calve without assistance
•
Cows must provide sufficient resources for the calf to express its genetic potential
•
Calves must be genetically capable to perform
•
Cows must maintain their body condition score in their ranch conditions
•
Cows must not be crazy (disposition)
ility with Timed A.I. Plus, heifers must be bred within 25 days to remain in the herd. They preg-check 28 days after the 25th day of breeding. Lamb allows that there has been more than one conversation over the years about culling a keeping-quality heifer that bred on day 26. They don’t waver, though. “They might become a very good animal in someone else’s operation, but in our operation, we want them pregnant earlier,” Lamb says. “I don’t think we’re selecting for fertility. I don’t think we’re selecting for pregnancy. All we’re expecting is those cows to become pregnant in our environment and in our management system. Those cows that we cull from our herd might be very good cows in someone else’s management system somewhere else, but they just don’t seem to work in our operation.”
Lamb compared the calving distribution between herds that had never used AI before with those that used it consistently. In the bull-bred herds, 44% of the calves were born from the day the first calf arrived to 30 days later. Lamb points out these were well-managed operations with calving seasons of less than 75 days. The average postpartum interval (PPI) in these herds by the start of the next breeding season was 64 days. There were 43% of cows with less than 50 days PPI at the start of the next breeding season.

In the timed AI herds, 88% of the cows calved in the first 30 days of the calving season. The average PPI to the start of the next breeding season was 79 days. Only 7% of the cows were less than 50 days PPI at the start of the next season.
Lamb utilizes results from a larger study he was involved with in South Dakota to demonstrate another primary gain from timed AI—increased days between calving and the next breeding season. The FDA study included eight operations and 1,700 cows, synchronized utilizing the 7-day CO-synch plus controlled internal drug release (CIDR) protocol (GnRH and CIDR on day one; CIDR removal and prostaglandin on day 7; GnRH and timed AI on day 10).
“We’re increasing the days of postpartum—that period of time where they can recover and start their estrus cycle before the next breeding season—by 15 days,” Lamb stresses. “A higher percentage of those cows have the chance to start cycling and become pregnant in the next breeding season. So, anything we can do to frontload the calving season is going to increasing our fertility to the next breeding season.”
Three herds achieved what many would consider to be acceptable first-service pregnancy rates of 56.9% to 65.8%. The other five had rates (44.4% to 50.4%) that many would consider to be disappointing.
Not to mention the numbers on the scale ticket and the bank draft at sale time.
For anyone with little fixed-time AI experience, Lamb emphasizes the need for realistic expectations.
All told, Lamb explains shifting the NFREC herd to fixedtimed AI continues to generate substantial economic return, compared with the natural breeding they were doing before. That’s before considering genetic improvement.
“The expectations need to be different for every cattle operation depending on how the cattle are treated from year to year,” Lamb says. “Very often, I think we have very unrealistic expectations of what we can get from our synchronization system. If you’ve synchronized year after year, you can say, ‘Yeah, I can expect a 60% pregnancy rate or 65% and do it.’ If it’s you’re first time, expecting a 60% pregnancy rate might be unrealistic.”
“We’re generating $50,000 more to that operation (about 300 calves annually, valued the same year-to-year) just by putting pressure on that herd for pregnancy, just by creating rules that we expect every cow in that herd to become pregnant when we want them to become pregnant.”
Researchers found only one consistent difference between the herds with higher rates and the others.

Maximize Pregnanc When Using Artificia By Carl Dahlen, North Dakota State University Extension Beef Cattle Specialist Artificial insemination (AI) offers the opportunity to use FOLLOW PRE-BREEDING VACCINE LABELS semen from high-accuracy, genetically superior sires at a fraction of the cost of purchasing a herd bull of similar genetics. In addition, using estrus synchronization and AI can increase the number of calves born earlier in the calving season and increase weaning weights of calves.
A large portion of the economic advantages resulting from implementing AI comes from the number of calves born in a herd from AI sires. The benefits are twofold: an immediate increase in sale value and, long-term benefits of infusing superior genetics into a herd. As producers are preparing for the upcoming breeding season there are several steps that can be taken now to maximizing AI pregnancy rates this spring: Evaluate Plane of Nutrition: Cow body condition score (BCS) serves as an indicator of overall nutritional status. Cows should ideally be at a score of 5 to 6 on a 9-point scale. However, absolute BCS is only part of the story. Making sure cows are on an increasing plane of nutrition leading up to the breeding season will help maximize pregnancy rates.
CHECK YOUR RECORDS Calving records can tell us a lot about the likelihood of success when breeding specific females. Identify cows less than 45 d postpartum at breeding and cows that had very difficult births. You may still be able to get a portion of these females pregnant but expect lower overall pregnancy rates to AI if they are included in your breeding group.
ASSIGN REPRODUCTIVE TRACT SCORES TO HEIFERS In groups of heifers whose history is unknown, groups that were comingled and bought from multiple sources, or groups that you just haven’t had time to watch closely consider having a veterinarian assign reproductive tract scores (RTS) to the heifers. Based on the size of the uterus and ovarian structures present, RTS scores increase can be used to eliminate heifers with poor breeding potential and identify any freemartin heifers. For optimal fertility with AI breeding, 50 percent of all heifers should have an RTS of 4 or 5 about 45 days prior to breeding.

Pre-breeding vaccinations are given to help protect cattle from several types of viruses and bacteria that can cause reproductive failure. Be sure to follow label recommendations when giving pre-breeding vaccines. Working events in many estrus synchronization protocols coincide with times when vaccine administration would be off-label, and vaccinating at these times could reduce pregnancy rates with AI dramatically.
IDENTIFY HIGH-FERTILITY BULLS Fertility differences exist among AI sires so be sure to review current estimates of sire fertility published by semen companies or talk with your semen supplier about which bulls consistently have generated superior fertility in the AI scenario you plan to implement (fixed-time AI, heat detection, etc.).
WORK CATTLE CALMLY Each person working cattle always should practice calm, low-stress handling techniques through adequate facilities, or stress may lead to poor results. Moving cattle calmly through facilities several times in advance of the breeding season can reduce the stress of subsequent handling events and improve cattle temperament, and may increase pregnancy rates
BE DILIGENT WITH HEAT DETECTION Producers wishing to use protocols that include heat detection must identify cows that are in heat. Not catching cows that come into heat will lead to disappointing results. Old thumb rules of 30 minutes per day morning and evening will likely result in missed heats, so consider more frequent and longer heat detection periods.
STRIVE FOR COMPLETE COMPLIANCE TO SYNCHRONIZATION PROTOCOLS Each task at each working event is required for successful synchronization, and impacts of noncompliance (missed cattle, improper injections, CIDRs left in, etc.) are additive. If every task is completed correctly 90 percent of the time and a protocol requires three working events, the end result would be that 72.9 percent of females were synchronized correctly (.90×.90×.90 = 72.9 percent). Strive for complete compliance when executing tasks to limit negative additive effects.
cy Rates al Insemination HANDLE SEMEN AND INSEMINATE WITH PROPER TECHNIQUE
PLAN POST-AI MOVEMENT AND NUTRITION CAREFULLY
Proper semen handling begins when the semen arrives on the ranch. Transfer semen from dry shippers to storage tanks as soon as possible, and make sure the tanks have plenty of nitrogen and are kept in a safe place. Thawing semen, loading AI guns and insemination all need to be done correctly. Producers wishing to AI their cows need to be proficient at AI or should consider hiring an AI technician.
Whenever possible, transport cattle from day one to four after AI or delay shipment until 45 days after AI to avoid transport-induced pregnancy losses. For dry lot developed females either adapt to summer grass for a period prior to breeding or consider supplementing on pasture to reduce losses associated with rapid diet and environment changes.
WORK WITH THE WEATHER Although we cannot control it, we need to understand the impacts that weather can have. For summer breeding seasons with heat in the forecast be sure to schedule working and breeding activities for the coolest period of the day when possible. Early morning (first light) will be the time of day when the body temperature of cattle is the coolest. If cattle working is required during peak periods of sunlight and heat, provide shade and water when possible, provide ample space for cattle to spread out in staging areas, and ensure cattle spend as little time as possible in closely confined portions of working facilities.
Many factors con contribute to the success of an AI breeding program. Concentrating on managing factors that we can influence is imperative to maximize pregnancy rates and the number of AI calves born in an operation. Best of luck this breeding season!
