ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022

A Letter FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Holy Cross Community,

We began the year with the excitement of returning to school for full-time in-person learning. Throughout the year, our talented and unrelenting faculty and staff worked full steam ahead to reacclimate, reengage, and reconnect our students. Supporting the efforts of our faculty and staff, and the success of our students, remains our sole focus. Our students continue to inspire us with their talents while our faculty and staff pour their hearts into every interaction with our students and their families. The love and dedication of those serving our students is a powerful example of the legacy of the Sisters of the Holy Cross who founded this school 154 years ago.

Our success as an institution remains a community effort. Without your support, we could not provide the ample opportunities and academic offerings to our students. Because of our robust community, the Academy stands strong today, developing women of courage, compassion, and scholarship.

You will find enclosed the names of those who made a difference at Holy Cross with a gift in our 2021-2022 fiscal year. These gifts allow current and future generations of Tartans to explore who they are and who they were meant to be. The Holy Cross Fund is the financial lifeline of the school. It covers expenses that are not included in tuition revenue. The Holy Cross Fund and the #EmpoweredGirls Campaign remains the best way for alumnae, current and alumnae parents, grandparents, and friends of the school to maintain and strengthen the mission and future of The Academy of the Holy Cross.

On behalf of the entire Holy Cross community, I want to thank all who gave in support of our school and helped to make the 2021-2022 school year so successful.

Sincerely,

MISSION STATEMENT

“The end and goal of education is not precisely to make poets, orators, philosophers, or intellectuals, but to conserve within the students the priceless and infinite amount of good that God has placed in their hearts.”

BASIL MOREAU

The Academy of the Holy Cross, a Catholic college preparatory school sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Cross since 1868, is dedicated to educating young women in a Christ-centered community which values diversity. The Academy is committed to developing women of courage, compassion and scholarship who responsibly embrace the social, spiritual and intellectual challenges of the world.

BLESSED

A Letter FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear Holy Cross Community:

Near the beginning of the school year, in September, the Academy celebrates Holy Cross Day. It begins with the student body, faculty, staff, and sisters in the area, gathering to celebrate Mass on the Feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross, and again, this year we were privileged to have Cardinal Gregory as our celebrant. It may be the anticipation of the year ahead, mixed with all its hopes, a little fear of not knowing what to expect, and prayer that created an atmosphere of profound quiet in a full auditorium. A joyous singing of the Alma Mater came at the end of Mass that always moves me to shout out with pride the last line, “Hail to thee, Spes Unica, Hail from thy daughters, Holy Cross.”

The 2022-23 school year began like it should have begun, welcoming events, orientations, classes, theater practice, arts, clubs, and sports. The difference this year is that school life is fully back in person. We are living the new normal, taking the best from the learnings of COVID-19 and helping our girls thrive, and grow into the women God is calling them to be. Last June, the Academy had another back-to-normal experience, when the graduation ceremony returned to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. As representatives of the board, we were seated on the altar, where we had the privilege to see the joy of the seniors as they waited to receive their diplomas and turn their tassels, we were honored, excited, and proud. Our pride blossomed as we listened to their academic achievements, awards, and participation in school life activities. Again, at the end of the ceremony, gathered outside, the graduates sang the Alma Mater, shouted the last line, and threw their caps high into the sky. They were now alumnae of the Academy. Always Holy Cross girls.

The seniors were embarking on their life journey. Colleges across the country and in Europe were waiting for them, and they had received over $22 million in college scholarships! These are our empowered girls who faced the pandemic with determination, confidence, and courage and came out the other side ready to be women scholars, leaders, women of kindness and compassion.

During the pandemic, the faculty, staff, and leadership embraced the Academy’s mission using their talents and gifts of creativity, and commitment to excellence. They never gave up, working diligently to educate the students and keep them safe and connected. The Board of Trustees extends our gratitude to all for efforts to keep the Academy’s lofty standards. To our parents/guardians, we are grateful for you trusting us with your daughters’ education.

The exciting development plans that include the beautiful Athletic and Wellness Center are progressing. Keep an eye out for further details. We are grateful to our generous donors who have given to the #EmpowerGirls Campaign. You are making things happen. Thank you.

God bless one and all,

Sister Ruth Marie Nickerson, CSC ’61 Board Chair

HOLY CROSS FUND 2021-2022

The Holy Cross Fund, and our community’s support of it, provides Holy Cross the resources we need to separate ourselves from so many other excellent private schools in the DMV. We pride ourselves in providing our girls a singular experience which not only prepares them for college and their lives beyond high school, but also empowers them to be change-makers and leaders in our world. The Holy Cross Fund is the difference maker!

Last year’s Holy Cross Fund set records. Generous alumnae, parents/guardians, parents/guardians of alumnae, grandparents and friends contributed a best-ever $655,000. This support came from 850 donors – a 5% increase in donors from the previous Fund, in a year when we all were still reeling from the pandemic and in the midst of economic challenges and worries.

And what did all of that generosity allow us to do in 2021-22?

• Fund our one-of-a-kind Moreau Options Program, a student-centered, inclusive education program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

• Provide our dedicated faculty and staff a variety of professional development and in-service programs to allow them to continue to provide students a leading-edge curriculum.

• Support a comprehensive Campus Ministry program, including retreats for each class year, social justice opportunities, prayer and liturgy.

• Create a diverse and customized curriculum that addresses a broad spectrum of student interests and needs, including four Dual Credit/Dual Enrollment classes, programs for students with learning differences, 17 AP classes, and a specialized Project Lead the Way curriculum for STEM-focused students.

• Fund our beyond-the-classroom athletics and arts programs that involve 100% of our students in at least one sport, club, performance or activity.

…And the list goes on! Tuition alone can NOT supply the Holy Cross excellence. The Holy Cross Fund does. Our thanks to the army of supporters who said “Yes!” to our direct mail appeals, our phone calls or emails, our September Holy Cross Day of Giving and our May Tartan Challenge. Support of the Holy Cross truly empowers our girls! This year, when you hear us call, or open one of our emails or envelopes, or hear a social media “ping” from Holy Cross…it might be the Holy Cross Fund coming to you again to ask that question: Will you say “Yes!”? We hope so! Thank you for considering.

WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

In 2021-2022, the Academy’s overall financial performance remained solid in large part thanks to two COVID relief programs, which contributed together over 16% of the total revenue. These one-time programs helped Holy Cross to navigate the pandemic financial crisis, but the underlying pressures remain on tuition and fees and donations to support the Academy’s people and programs.

One very positive outcome for 2021-2022 was the increase to the Academy’s gifts and foundation support. Holy Cross Fund and foundation gifts, both new and renewed, increased to over $655,000, a 30% increase over 2020-2021. The #EmpoweredGirls capital campaign also increased over the 2020-2021 level, and interest remains high as the school moves closer and closer to construction of a wonderful new Athletic and Wellness Center. Our operating needs, however, remain great. Because of the pandemic’s impact on our community, Holy Cross did not increase tuition for 2021-2022. Financial aid to our families, however, did increase, exceeding $3.6 million or 25% of total expenses. Also, this year, instead of making a positive contribution to the bottom line, we recorded investment losses of almost $600,000, a trend we are seeing continue into this year as well.

Please continue to support the Academy with gifts to our Holy Cross Fund and the #EmpoweredGirls capital campaign. Your support makes the difference every day for our girls and our families.

This 2021-2022 Annual Report covers contributions to the Academy’s Holy Cross Fund for annual giving, Endowment, The Difference We Make and #EmpoweredGirls campaigns, and the Benefit Auction & Gala received between June 1, 2021 and May 31, 2022. The Academy is grateful for the invaluable generosity of our donors, including those who have chosen not to have their names published herein. Thank you for making Holy Cross a priority in your charitable giving.

The Academy of the Holy Cross does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national or ethnic origin in its educational policy, personnel policies, admission policies, scholarship and financial aid programs, or other school-administered programs.

WHY I GIVE

Two years ago, my daughter, Hannah, decided to join the Tartan community as a ninth grader. While she had a number of schools to choose from, she shared that the shadow day and Class of 2025 welcome parade cemented her decision...that Holy Cross felt like home. This sentiment has only deepened over the years. As a parent, we've watched our very introverted, shy daughter blossom into a confident, poised advocate for herself and those around her. Hannah's father and I know that her transformation is due to the friendships, community, and opportunities at The Academy of the Holy Cross. Our daughter continues to grow as a mature young woman and leader, and we support Holy Cross through giving to ensure other girls can dream without limitations.

Holy Cross was a very meaningful part of my life. It challenged me academically and introduced me to a community of strong and loyal women who remain some of my closest friends today. I continue to give to Holy Cross so that I can help provide an opportunity for future generations of women to share in this Holy Cross experience.

WAYS OF GIVING

Making a gift to Holy Cross is truly an investment in the future of our students and our school. Our students are doing great things thanks to the generosity of donors – past and present! Please, consider the following ways that help you and Holy Cross.

HOLY CROSS FUND AND CAPITAL GIVING

Make your gift by check, cash on online. Online giving is available at www.academyoftheholycross.org/give

MATCHING GIFTS

Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees. The impact of your gift maybe doubled! Contact your employer for matching gift information.

BEQUESTS AND TRUSTS

Bequests and charitable trusts are a wonderful way to help the Academy in perpetuity. Contact your financial planner or legal counsel for ways you can help Holy Cross through your will, retirement plan, a charitable remainder or charitable lead trust.

GIFTS OF STOCKS OR APPRECIATED SECURITIES

Gifts of stocks or securities are a great way to receive a tax deduction and eliminate capital gains taxes. Please contact the Advancement Office for transfer instructions to make a gift of appreciated assets. Written correspondence in the form of a letter or email to the Advancement Office indicating that the transfer will be taking place is greatly appreciated for tracking purposes.

UNITED WAY & CFC

The Academy of the Holy Cross is a proud member of both the Combined Federal Campaign and United Way of the Nation’s Capital Area. Please contact the Advancement Office if you have designated your gift through UWNCA #9182 or CFC #83484.

GIVING FROM YOUR IRA

If you are age 70 ½ and have an IRA, consider taking a QCD (Qualified Charitable Distribution) from your account. Take advantage of not paying Medicare or Social Security taxes while making a dramatic impact to Holy Cross. While you should certainly contact your financial planner for advice, here are three steps to make it happen:

1. Use the IRA distribution forms provided by your IRA custodian and a letter to direct that a distribution be made to the Academy of the Holy Cross at the following address:

2. Office of Institutional Advancement – The Academy of the Holy Cross, 4920 Strathmore Avenue – Kensington, MD 20895.

3. Make sure the cover letter specifically request that your IRA custodian (a) memorialize your name and address as the donor of record in connection with this transfer and (b) copy you on the transmittal.

4. Email a copy of your IRA distribution for and your transmittal letter to Charly Ryan, at cryan@academyoftheholycross.org.

WE CREATE. WE EMPOWER. WE CHANGE.

Launched in 2019, the #EmpoweredGirls capital campaign continues a Holy Cross tradition of campus improvements that dates back to the construction of our arts and sciences wing and theater in 2003. More recent improvements include the creation of a multi-athletic turf field complex, a new technology and innovation center, dance studio, air-conditioning, and needed modernization, renovation, and upgrades to our original 1956 building.

#EmpoweredGirls - which had realized over $3.5 million in gifts and pledges in its initial phases - focuses on two capital priorities: (1) creation of campus accessibility and (2) construction of a new athletic facility.

ACCESSIBILITY

We have completed a major portion of the campus accessibility plan. The main school building is now accessible through the installation of two ramps. Next summer, an ADA accessible lift will be installed to access the lower level. Finally, we will add an ADA ramp to Ridgway Field after construction of the new Athletic & Wellness Center.

ATHLETIC & WELLNESS CENTER

When the current gymnasium was constructed in 1966, the scope of high school sports was much smaller and less varied than it is today. With limited playing capacity and very little “gathering space” in the current gym, the Academy is now focused on providing a facility that will enrich the student experience. The new Athletic & Wellness Center will enhance our already excellent sports program and also provide space where the entire community can gather for school-wide assemblies, pep rallies, dances, etc. Designing a space where student athletes can practice, develop skills, and have a sense of belonging is crucial not only to improve our programs, but to help attract and retain new students. The current gym is filled with memories, but our students and middle school-aged girls looking at high schools require a facility that will enrich their experience.

In addition to an appropriately sized and equipped gym, the Athletic and Wellness Center will include space for athletic training, a fitness center, locker rooms, concessions and offices. Philanthropic support of the #EmpoweredGirls Campaign, combined with the revenue received from the sale of the front portion of our property, will allow us to make this dream a reality for Holy Cross. Please contact the Advancement Office if you would like more information on how this project will make a difference in our campus as well as the lives of our students! We are happy to schedule a time for you to learn more about the plans.

We extend our gratitude to the following donors who have made gifts or pledges to the #EmpoweredGirls Campaign.

WHY I GIVE

Pearl Buenvenida '90

I make an annual contribution to Holy Cross to recognize the role it has played in my educational and professional success. I have no doubt that the quiet efforts of Holy Cross’ administration and faculty were instrumental in the academic awards and achievements I received in my early adulthood. Over the course of my professional life, I have found that leaders at all levels are all quite intelligent, but some unfortunately are ultimately self-serving. I am encouraged to support the faith-based learning that the Academy offers so that more of our future leaders display the values that AHC espouses — women of courage, compassion, and scholarship.
