While the UAE bakes under a scorching sun, stories about Ramadan and summer continue to inspire and show our community’s resiliency. Ramadan is traditionally a time of spirituality, self reflection and selfless acts. In this month’s Tempo you’ll learn about our community’s giving, including the mission to gather medicine and school supplies for Uganda’s poor. To further focus on opportunity for renewal, we decided to do a follow up story on Resolution Keeper, which we launched at the start of the year, to help our readers stay true to their promises. We called up some of the participants to see if they were on track...and I can tell you they were surprised to get our call. We’ll try to keep them honest yet :) We catch up with six teens to see how they keep their cool this summer, and celebrate creativity and art through the interviews of Emirati Saoud al Dhaheri, as well as the unique tray art by duo Salwa Abdel Mesih and Maha Hamouda. We also love the Express Your Ramadan competition by TwoFour54 and urge everyone to send in their submissions before the deadline. I take the opportunity to thank all our contributors, who pour their passion into these pages, and to all our partners and advertisers, who continue to believe in Tempo and recognise its impact on art, culture and living in the Emirates.

USPACE EID GIFTS

YOUR GUIDE TO THE PERFECT PRESENT! By Alia Youssef

TALKING BOOKS By Azza El Masri

‘PERFECT CHEMISTRY’ SERIES: ‘Perfect Chemistry’, ‘Rules of Attraction’ and ‘Chain Reaction’ Author: Simone Elkeles (Walker and Company, 2011)

Whether it’s shopping for your best friend, a sibling or even a Muslim colleague at work, choosing gifts for Eid can be really difficult especially when tastes and preferences vary so much. Here’s a list of gift ideas that are ideal for people of all ages and won’t have you breaking your head or wallet at the last minute. 1. GIFT CARDS. Instead of handing the usual 100 dirham note to your little sister or brother, treat them to a gift card from one of their favourite shops. Toys ‘R’ Us or Build-ABear Workshop have a great range of products that can easily satisfy any child’s toy cravings.

Gift cards make it easier for both you and the person you’re gifting. 2. CHOCOLATE. Nothing says ‘Eid’ better than a box of yummy chocolates! A beautifully decorated and primped-up box from Patchi, in a variety of flavours ranging from caramel to cheesecake, is sure to be a favourite for lots of people! 3. GIFT BASKETS. These are probably my favourite Eid presents to both give and receive. My preferred gift baskets are the body care ones that include luscious creams, shower gels and soap bars. The Body Shop and L’Occitane have a wide selection of baskets in different price ranges to satisfy every budget.

MY RAMADAN

THE MONTH OF REFLECTION

By Amal Naseem

improves the moral and spiritual character of a human being. This month actually gives us a break from all the stress and an opportunity to seek and think about our own selves, our future and families. It’s a unique month of self-analysis.

Ramadan has always been enjoyed because of the shorter work and school hours, less assignments, all-night shopping and, best of all, the great variety of food. But what we tend to forget is the reason why fasting is so important and why it’s one of the pillars of Islam. Fasting in the month of Ramadan develops a real spirit of social belonging, of unity and brotherhood and of equality before God. It’s an institution which

Ramadan is also for thinking about society; starving from dusk to dawn makes one realize what the unfortunate go through every single day. As students, the period of fasting, especially early in the day, serves as a tool to focus our minds on other useful things. During this month , many Muslims try to avoid watching TV, listening to music and doing other leisure activities, which gives them more time and energy to spend on more productive activities such as academic revision, an intense study of Islam, voluntary prayers, social and humanitarian causes, and quality time with the family. It helps us bring about a change to our daily routine and reflect back on our lives to try and make them better. It is a reminder of our duty to God, our purpose and higher values in life. God Himself describes the purpose of fasting as “Oh you who Believe! Fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may develop consciousness of God.”

Ramadan is here, and with it comes long exhausting days and festive nights. But how do you conquer that aching boredom within when the sun is shining and Iftar seems so far away? The answer is quite simple: three brothers, three books, three romances. If it’s bad boys that you want, boys that make you tear at your hair and swoon at the same time, then the ‘Perfect Chemistry’ series by Simone Elkeles hits the mark. What if you were stuck with Alex, the oldest Fuentes and a notorious gang member, and you couldn’t afford to ruin your perfect reputation like Brittany Ellis in ‘Perfect Chemistry’? What if you, like Kiara Westford in ‘Rules of Attraction’, had to open your house for Carlos at Alex’s request to keep him from meddling with danger, and he has this fantastic ability to make you talk when you shouldn’t? But… what if you were a cynical, heartbroken girl like Nikki Cruz in ‘Chain Reaction’ and had met Luis at a certain event? Luis who is all about the next rush, the next thrill and the next risk? What if you were tempted to break all your rules just for this one guy? I guess the most important question is: who would you choose? I’ve been racking my brain to make a decision but I can’t. That’s how good Simone Elkeles is. She gives you these three brothers – three flawed, incredible, hot-blooded Mexicans – and you can’t keep away. You just can’t. The reason is that everybody should fall in love with the Fuentes brothers. It’s crazy - they’re mean, they’re gang members, but they’re the most amazing romantics, and that changes everything. Cherish this gift; it’ll remedy your boredom and soothe your growling stomach. www.tempoplanet.com | 05

THE BOTTOM BOTTOM LINE HOLIDAY PERKS Nothing beats a holiday more than the promise of another holiday – that’s free! One of our readers, Donna, told me of her recent experience of a trip from Dubai to New York. As they were checking in, an Emirates airline attendant approached her family and told them that the flight was overbooked and that they wanted to know if the family could delay their flight to evening on that same day in exchange for five free tickets for the entire family to New York that they could take anytime during the year.Yes, she had to repeat it to me as well: accept a delay of several hours in exchange for free tickets! Right after the family digested the offer, they all replied: ‘hell yes!’ LONG TIME LONG HAUL Nothing in life comes for free, so while it is nice to travel to New York or Seattle from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, there’s payback for that as well. You have to put up with the looong travel hours. (Just ask Donna from above, or our friends from down under). So what do you do if you’re someone who is restless on the ground (let alone suspended in air), prone to claustrophobia and have three rambunctious kids in tow? Atarax for you, and cough syrup for the kiddies. LUXURY FLYING But really guys, isn’t flying Emirates or Etihad long haul a fabulous experience? The endless movies (with in-flight entertainment systems that really work) and the airline food that actually tastes good. Friends stateside wax lyrical about our national airlines, used as they are to paying for luggage, sandwiches and ear sets. Here’s to our airlines continuing to trail-blaze the skies. JETLAG BLUES And then comes the post vacation payback.Yep, it’s called jetlag! That’s when you look like a twit dozing off all day and in the middle of an important meeting, while others knowingly smile and try to ignore your drooling and trying-to-stayawake spasms. Awkwaaard. Apparently there are hormone melatonin and prescription medications like Ambien and Nuvigil that work wonders to mitigate jetlag. Remind me to take them before attending a post-vacation board meeting. The bottom bottom line is that vacations are fun, enjoyable etc… but be prepared to pay your dues.

WATCHING MASS EFFECT...OR NO EFFECT The extended ending demanded by angry fans of EA’s popular Mass Effect series has been out for a couple months now, so go ahead and download it for free on Xbox Live or watch it online if you haven’t already (check the Game Hedz blog for a link). For those who don’t know, the trilogy came to a rather abrupt end and left questions, or rather gaping holes, in the story according to some. A fan outcry forced EA’s hand to provide more clarity on the fate of the main characters and the universe as a whole. Was it worth it? You tell me.Vote on what you think about the extended ending on my blog. WALKING DEAD EPISODE 2: STARVED FOR HELP The five-part all-platform Walking Dead game was first released in May. The second part went public on June 29 and the third part should be out any day now. If you haven’t started this game, do so and do it now. Don’t walk (unless you’re a zombie) run and download it! Lee Everett returns with his young charge Clementine, along with other survivors who are struggling to find food after taking refuge at a motel. The second installment focuses not on the dead monsters but the living ones that perhaps any one of us can become. The novelty of this game is that your role play goes beyond actions, goals and tasks - you get to navigate a slippery, unpredictable and paradoxical moral landscape. Choices become the biggest battle. Episode 3: Long Road Ahead promises to up the ante so stop reading and get to the zombie bashing! Check it out and let me know what you think!

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP EXPRESS Until recently, digital photography editing has been a task best suited for desktop and laptop computers. However, Adobe proved that it could be done in the mobile space as well with Photoshop Express, a free photo editing application for iPhone and Android devices. It’s a powerhouse of a mobile app and can even handle noise reduction. All in all, Adobe Photoshop Express is a solid tool for making light photo edits on your device.

Sony’s VG20 is an interchangeable lens camera that uses a 16.1-megapixel APS-C Exmor sensor on its NEX still model. The physical sensor size helps to show some of the wonderful shallow-depth-of-field effects that can be achieved by mounting a wide aperture lens. The VG20EH PAL model shoots at 25/50p in full HD; it takes a while to get used to but once you do, the button configuration starts to make much more sense. The kit setup of the VG20EH includes an 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 image-stabilized E-mount lens. It has a 3-inch touch screen LCD plus an additional viewfinder that can be attached. The Sony VG20 also gives excellent quality video recording. It is available at Jumbo Electronics for AED 7499. SONY TABLET SGPT112AE/S Crystal-clear TrueBlack display, dynamic xLoud sound and, according to Sony, “the most fluid touch-screen ever” are the highlights of this tablet. It features an ARM Cortex-A9 Dual Core NVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHz mobile processor, 9.4-inch wide 1280x800 TFT Colour LCD, 1GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, USB 2.0, stereo mini jack, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi with up to 72 Mbps transmission speed, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, built-in stereo speakers, monaural mic and 5 megapixel rear and 0.3 megapixel front-facing cameras with 3-axis accelerometer, gyro, digital compass and ambient light sensors. The tablet offers up to 430 hours standby time and up to 8 hours while playing music, videos or browsing. It seems to have the same specs as many other tablets available in the market, and could be a good addition to your gadgets list.

NEWS & GOSSIP TABLET USAGE HITS CRITICAL MASS Since the launch of Apple’s iPad, the tablet market has reached a critical mass in just two years, with nearly one in four smartphone owners also using a tablet. Tablets are one of the most rapidly adopted consumer technologies in history and are poised to fundamentally disrupt the way people engage with the digital world both on the go and, perhaps most notably, in the home. FAVE BUY OF THE PAST MONTH: A black skirt from H&M. It’s comfortable, pretty and short! I can wear it whenever and wherever! FAVE PLACES TO SHOP: I don’t have a specific store. When I go shopping, I always like to look at all the stores, see what stuff they have and whether anything really interests me. I found that Bebe usually has a lot of nice clothes. Every time I go in there, there’s always something I want to buy! Topshop would definitely be my second choice.

DOES ABU DHABI HAVE STYLE? Yes definitely! How could it not with all the lovely shops it has? You see lots of different colours and styles around the city. FASHION PET HATES: I don’t hate anything. I think everyone has their own style. I do disagree with a few modern trends such as leggings under dresses; however, if you like it you should wear it!

SYMBOLS OF HOSPITALITY ART

HAND-PAINTING TRAYS BECOMES A BUSINESS

Salwa Abdel Mesih and Maha Hamouda have known each other for over 20 years. For both, their families and careers were a priority and they hardly had time to pursue any other interests. But resigning from work at the end of 2011 proved to be a blessing. Painting trays started as a hobby for both Salwa and Maha, and while Salwa had taken a few art courses and painted all her life, Maha was inspired by her children. “Both of my children are keen artists. My daughter was studying IB art at school and she had all her materials lying at home. I was always interested in going to art galleries and exhibitions so I decided to start experimenting with the materials,” said Maha. It wasn’t until Salwa dropped by to help Maha experiment that they decided to make gifts for others. “I’ve drawn and painted all my life so I used to prepare personalized gifts for friends on silk and canvas,” said Salwa.

12 | www.tempoplanet.com

Maha and Salwa with their trays.

CHALLENGES FACED Art seemed to be the only thing to fill the vacuum created when these two zestful women left their jobs. Maha and Salwa began hand painting wooden trays; however, learning to work with wood instead of the traditional canvas was a bit of a challenge. “We had some trouble finding a good carpenter. Safety was also an aspect we had to keep in mind, and lots of research went into making sure our trays are safe to serve food and drink,” said Maha. “Quality control was definitely our biggest challenge especially in trying to find the right materials and the proper finish for the trays,” added Salwa. While they have found almost everything they need in the UAE, they are constantly looking out for new materials to try different techniques, “When we travel, we make sure we look at art supplies hoping to learn more and find contemporary materials,” said Maha.

INSPIRATION FROM HOME Maha and Salwa are inspired by their homeland, Egypt. This inspiration can even be seen at Maha’s home, which was where I interviewed them. “Sufism is another great inspiration. There is something about Sufism that is very mystifying and calming and we find inspiration in the arts of the traditional dervishes,” said Maha. “We are definitely at a stage in our lives where we are hoping to calm down a bit,” joked Salwa.

HOPES AND DREAMS Having resigned from their daily jobs, Salwa and Maha are hoping that what started as a hobby is something that will grow into a business. “We started with trays and have progressed to painting coffee cups. We’re thinking about other home accessories like candle holders, coasters and dessert plates that will also complement the trays. We are really excited to be pursuing a long-time interest of ours and hope others enjoy our work,” said Salwa.

CITY BITES PRESENTS

Flippin’ Out BATTLE OF THE BURGERS There is nothing better than a juicy burger to satisfy a food craving. Without fear or favour, Tempo intern Saniya Ali bravely accepted our challenge to get the lowdown on four well-known UAE burger joints. WHERE: BURGERFUEL | MIRDIF CITY CENTRE, DUBAI

WHERE: GRAND CENTRAL | ABU DHABI

WHAT: 1/3 Pounder with cheese

WHAT: Chicken burger

BUILD: 1/3 pound 100% pure New Zealand beef patty, melted cheddar, bread and butter pickles, Dijon mustard, relish and fresh natural BF aioli.

BUILD: Organic chicken patty, lettuce, chopped tomatoes, onions and pickles.

COMMENT: Decorated in bright turquoise and indigo, the restaurant looked attractive, and did its part to be eco-friendly by using paper bags and cups to serve the food in. A ‘Doofer’ is provided which is a patented cardboard holder for the burger to prevent your hands getting dirty. The buns are fresh and gluten-free, giving the burger an extra kick in flavour. The New Zealand beef was well cooked and juicy, and the combination of sauces created a sensation my taste buds didn’t know was possible. RECOMMENDATIONS: Food and service was great and was still in my budget! I felt I was doing my part to support BurgerFuel’s cause to conserve the environment and would definitely come back for more.

COMMENT: A small restaurant that looks great from a distance; however only the brave would venture on this journey in summer with its outdoor-only seating. The heat is enough to stifle any appetite. The typical condiments didn’t do it for me either; I was looking for innovation from this New York-style restaurant. Extra condiments can be added for an additional cost. Their limited menu consists of three burgers: beef, chicken and veggie. The chicken burger didn’t knock me off my feet but their milkshakes were rather delicious. RECOMMENDATIONS: Ideal location if you plan to dine in winter but not in summer! Not high on my ‘must visit again’ list. SANIYA’S RATING:

SANIYA’S RATING:

WHERE: CHILI’S | KHALIDIYAH MALL, ABU DHABI WHERE: FUDDRUCKERS | AL WAHDA MALL, ABU DHABI WHAT: Swiss Melt Burger BUILD: Beef patty, sautéed mushrooms, grilled onions and Swiss cheese. COMMENT: This restaurant chain has been an all-time favourite in the UAE for good reason. Their incredibly filling servings go hand in hand with the unique and loved flavours. A friendly waiter took my burger order and asked how I wanted the meat done. There’s nothing extraordinary about how they serve it but you can visit the salad and condiment bar to load up on extras to your liking. Fuddruckers is especially good with keeping the juices of the meat intact. The best thing about the food is the consistency in flavour, quality and service. RECOMMENDATIONS: Nothing fancy but everything is just right. Food and service was great as always.

WHAT: Bacon Burger BUILD: Beef patty, crispy beef bacon, aged cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, shredded lettuce, tomato and pickle. COMMENT: The homely atmosphere and welcoming staff made me feel like I was eating at a local diner instead of a world-renowned American franchise. The menu was difficult to pick from but I decided on their trademark ‘Big Mouth Burger’. The meal took a little longer to arrive than expected, and came with a side of homestyle fries and the meat and condiments placed in a sesame seed bun. With cheese oozing out the sides and beef so juicy that it dribbled down my mouth, it was hard to resist and soon the burger was gone. RECOMMENDATIONS: Food was good and right in my budget, and the service was acceptable. I would happily eat there again. SANIYA’S RATING:

MEDICINE TO UGANDA: Mission to help the poor By Sharon Carvalho

37 year-old Dubai resident Yassmeen Hashim began working with charities six years ago and hasn’t looked back. Tempo sat down with this passionate woman to talk about her latest venture, a trip to Uganda to provide school and medical supplies to the underprivileged. What is your background with charity work? My involvement with charities goes back to 2006 when I was part of a team that participated in an expedition dedicated to the empowerment of women as part of the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) which helped raise funds to support less privileged Arab women. I continued to work with local charities until 2008 after which I joined Mame Diop, Soffia Diop, Suparna Mathur and Tariq Jallad to form Abu Dhabi Cause Connect (ADCC). As Strategic Connector for the group, I have worked on the Breast Cancer Campaign and the Pink Walkathon, the Annual Terry Fox Run in Abu Dhabi, the Annual Autism Walk, and the Recycle For A Cause initiative. How did you get involved with going? I was recruited by my colleague Dr. Chris Park who has been involved in lots of medical outreaches and missions in different parts of the world. What preparatory work did you do? We started collecting in-kind donations. Our message went out to the community and we asked our ADCC Facebook followers to help us. We wrote letters asking for English books for the school’s library, shoes and slippers for the kids, school bags and medicines. Tell us about your experience. I have dreamt about this trip for a long time and I am delighted that the dream has finally materialized, thanks to the amazing team of volunteers. I loved everything about Uganda. The weather, the people, the place, and most importantly, the team spirit we shared.

Being in the rural areas of Africa, with little or no access to electricity and clean water, is not an easy experience for someone who is so used to living in the GCC countries. I enjoyed seeing how the physical hardships were endured by the whole team during our six-day stay. Our medical supplies and medicines were held up by the Ugandan authorities when we arrived at Entebbe Airport. We cried when we learned they were not going to be released. This basically meant the failure of our mission; we had promised treatment for more than 500 children and their families. It took four days of continuous talks to release the medicines; it normally takes up to three months! The best part was seeing the poor children and their families who, despite their misery, smiled and entertained us. In fact, they were among the friendliest and most entertaining people I have ever met. What do you hope to achieve from mission? I believe every child has the right to access primary healthcare and education. Unfortunately this is not true for the impoverished youth in some African countries. Change is yet to happen and there’s always a hope for a better tomorrow. My dream would be to see more medical outreach programmes with more health care professionals volunteering to travel overseas to provide care, and increased community support for these needy children to receive the education they deserve. What are the future plans for this project? Due to the airport hold-up, we shortened our actual treatment plan so we need to return to those patients; the medicines and medical supplies are stored in a local church in Bujuku City. A medical team headed by Dr Chris Park plan to go back during Eid-Ul-Adha holidays to see more patients and provide medical and dental treatment.

If you would like to help, please contact Yassmeen on yassmeen@abudhabicauseconnect.com or call her on 056 244 6809

DR CHRIS PARK Dr. Park is a 39 year-old general surgeon who for the past 15 years has volunteered for various medical missions all over the world including Mongolia, Bangladesh, Nepal and Madagascar. He is going to Uganda for his next mission to help a colleague who runs an NGO devoted to helping underprivileged children. As for recruiting Yassmeen, Dr Park said, “Yassmeen has always been eager to join the medical missions I have planned in the past. She has good connections with the local community and hospitals due to her career in the healthcare sector in the UAE and has always been actively involved in helping the needy.” www.tempoplanet.com | 15

youth talk CELEBRATING RAMADAN

A SPECIAL TIME FOR SHARING

LOOKING BACK THE SCHOOL YEARS By Ahmed Samir

By Shamma Al Suwaidi

It’s a curious thing to look back and remember. No memory, however vivid, is ever like what the actual occurrence was. The things we see in our mind’s eye are never as clear as our memories of them. Instead the memory is a set of clouded images, a shadowy wraith with colours slightly – or heavily – faded; opaque and uncertain at the edges, with more than a slight chance of having been changed by time. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful thing.

For many people in the UAE, Ramadan is a month to look forward to. You might even say that most of us anxiously wait for the sign of the month to appear. It’s the month of giving what we’ve held back on. It doesn’t last long but its days are beautiful and the memories we create last forever. Ramadan is a time when families wake each other up and gather right before sunrise. One member cooks for all of us, another sets the table and the others lend a helping hand or just sit there in support before the day of fasting begins. The same thing happens around sunset but it’s livelier as we are all excited to break fast and bond around the dinner table. Because of the hunger we feel, the food cooked at these times ignites the taste buds since so many feelings are involved in preparing it. I have fond memories of Ramadan as a child; how my family would support me and help me through fasting, how we would all gather for prayers, how we would break fast together as a country each and every person at exactly the same time. All of these things make Ramadan so special to me. Now that I’m older, I realize how this month affects us at a spiritual level as well. It always takes us higher, never lower. The weight we carry magically disappears; we give so much that by the end of the month we feel so much lighter. The ability to make the people around us smile suddenly stands out, and we realize the value of every small thing around us. Ramadan can be so much more than an obligation if only we can step into the sunlight. During this time, the phrase ‘it’s more than meets the eye’ really fits. If we pay attention to the small details of what happens around us, we find ourselves enlightened by things we didn’t notice previously. It may be confusing at times, maybe even slightly negative, but there will always be some sort of beauty hidden within. All it takes is for us to open ourselves to see it. Ramadan Kareem to everyone. May you have a blessed month.

My thinking about memories and the nature of remembering things was prompted by a long period of reminiscence. For the last few days, I’ve been thinking over my last 12 years of life, The School Years. I think of The School Years and a cascade of memories is set in motion: 12 years’ worth of making friends, a hundred times as many mistakes (or even more!), of having a silly crush on the ‘Girl by the Swings’ in the kindergarten playground (though I didn’t think it was silly at the time), of numerous visits to the school library and the kind librarian who referred to me by name, of forging my father’s signature on that particularly dissatisfying report card (and quite the masterful display of workmanship, I must say), of my likes and dislikes, ambitions and hopes, and the way I see life changing in more ways that I can count, of ultimately having lived a period of my life I’m sure I’ll remember for as long as I live (however sappy that might sound). Now, looking back doesn’t necessarily mean remembering everything; indeed it’s a relatively small number of things that I remember! Some days, most days, are just lived and are just as quickly forgotten. But even though they’re forgotten, they’re not wholly purposeless. The forgotten days give the ones that are remembered some meaning; they give them their most intrinsic quality which is to make them as unforgettable as they are. Regarding something as unimportant ultimately leaves opportunity to regard something else as important.

The forgotten days give the ones that are remembered some meaning; they give them their most intrinsic quality which is to make them as unforgettable as they are.

So a sincere and much-deserved tip of the proverbial hat to the forgotten days, for without them the memorable days wouldn’t be so.

TEEN SUMMER ESCAPES: YOUTH

TRAVEL, TRAINING and terror

The youth of Abu Dhabi have a lot to look forward to this summer, whether it is catching up on lost sleep, trying new activities or travelling. Tempo contributor Yasmine Ziadat asked some teenagers about their summer plans.

OMAR - “I’ve been playing football since I can remember!” A football fanatic and AC Milan supporter since the age of nine, 15 year-old Omar knows exactly what he wants to do this summer. Following in the footsteps of many famous players, in particular his favourite player Gennaro Ivan Gattuso, Omar will take part in a training camp at Murray Park in Scotland where famous local club Rangers train. Then Omar’s off to Milan in Italy where he’ll meet up with best friend Mohamed for two weeks of playing football at the AC Milan Football Summer Camp.

CARLO - “I sailed once and it was awesome. I want more!” 16 year-old Carlo will be in France attending the Glénan’s Sailing School. He finds that learning about boats and sailing techniques is interesting and exciting but sometimes a challenge at first. Carlo will also take advantage of being in a foreign country and use it as an opportunity to brush up and improve on his French.

CLEO - “You learn to respect the ocean and get a feel for nature!” 15 year-old Cleo cannot wait to go back to Bali and devote five weeks to surfing with her parents and younger brother. It will be her second visit to Bali since 2003 and she loves the wonderful people and natural beauty as well as the variety of marine life and gorgeous weather. Being in a different country and doing one of her favourite things is what Cleo is looking forward to this summer.

SHERRII - “I follow the Olympics every time it’s on!”

NICK - “I just love music!” 15 year-old Nick has been playing the viola since the age of nine and is currently finishing Grade Seven. This summer, Nick has booked his entire August at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria which provides masterclasses by top musicians from around the world. This month-long workshop offers Nick the chance to further practice his technique, and he sees this as a fantastic opportunity to enjoy music and meet big names.

20 | www.tempoplanet.com

ALENNA -“I absolutely love the experience of doing something out of my comfort zone!” Despite having a fear of heights, Alenna decided to put herself through the nerve-wracking experience of bungee jumping off a crane in Dubai last year. This summer, Alenna will give bungee jumping another go in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. If that isn’t enough, 15 year-old Alenna plans to take adrenaline to the next level and try sky diving if her age allows it.

16 year-old athlete Sherrii Kapadia is excited the London Olympics are being held in her home country. Sherrii loves sports and follows the Olympics closely so the opportunity to head to the UK for the summer was too good to pass up. In particular, Sherrii enjoys volleyball; she plays for her school team at the British School Al Khubairat and is inspired by her Physical Education teacher Ms. Williams who previously represented England in volleyball. It is also an ideal chance for Sherrii to see her first ever live game of volleyball with friend and fellow sports lover Aninta. Sherrii says she is keeping an eye out for English swimmer Rebecca Adlington and English diver Tom Daley who she was lucky enough to meet during his visit to Abu Dhabi earlier this year.

YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION WILL IT STILL BE THERE NEXT YEAR? As we jet off to escape the heat of the desert this summer, have you given a thought to what would happen to that gorgeous beach or amazing mountaintop view over the next few years if climate change continues at its current pace? Favourite holiday destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Maldives, the European Alps and the Amazon Rainforest are all under threat from changes in our global climate. Whether it’s the rising sea levels, decreased rainfall or increasing temperatures, these are all changes that can dramatically affect economies, livelihoods and even entire communities. THE GREAT BARRIER REEF A 2009 report identified some of the major impacts of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef as increased frequency of severe weather events, sea level rise and sea temperature rise. These changes, of varying degrees, have had huge impacts on the delicate and vital structure of the coral reef. It is one of the world’s most vulnerable ecosystems which has already suffered damage from higher-than-average sea temperatures, resulting in coral bleaching. THE EUROPEAN ALPS Long considered one of the best destinations for dependable winter snow or summer mountain adventures, the Alps are becoming increasingly susceptible to the effects of increased temperatures and changing precipitation levels.

As the temperature rises, so does the snow line, limiting the snowfall in previously reliable resorts that have built up around the Alps. Climbing and other activities are now only available at certain times of year due to the permafrost on many glacier routes becoming unstable and causing the rock above to crumble and break. It may reach a point where only the highest resorts are able to maintain any tourism activities, with those activities becoming increasingly limited. THE MALDIVES As the world’s lowest-lying nation, only 1.3m above sea level, the Maldives is at great risk from rising sea levels. In the lead up to the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit, the then President Mohamed Nasheed held a cabinet meeting underwater in scuba gear to highlight the potential ramifications of climate change on the island. With a tourism economy that attracts around one million visitors each year, the Maldives is now planning a tourist tax to help fund their vision to be carbon neutral by 2020. THE AMAZON RAINFOREST The Amazon Rainforest is home to over 20% of the planet’s biodiversity and contributes so much oxygen to the atmosphere that it has been called the ‘Lungs of the World’. However, when sections of the forest are cut down or removed, through pressures placed on the land by those living there, carbon dioxide and methane are released into the air. Methane is over 20 times more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere than CO2, although it remains in the atmosphere

for a shorter time. The deforestation of the Amazon is a huge global issue, and no matter the reasons behind those wishing to use the land, it is something that cannot be allowed to continue to the detriment of those around the world. No matter where you go on holiday this year, have a great time, laugh, relax and enjoy the environment that you are in. Just don’t forget that our planet is changing and that great view or the pristine beach that you love might not be there forever.

DRAWING ON THE PAST ART

EMIRATI ARTIST FOLLOWS CHILDHOOD PASSION

By Sharon Carvalho

People don’t always grow up to make a living out of something they loved as a child. Saoud Saeed Bin Khalid Al Dhaheri is one person who is showing that childhood dreams can come true. Saoud is an Emirati artist from Al Ain. He was attracted to art from an early age when he found that doodling and sketching came naturally to him, and this fascination continued throughout his education although he briefly considered a career as a surgeon. Saoud’s creative interest began so early that he had time to experiment with different forms of art, including voluntary photography work around the UAE, until he found a style that suited both him and the message he wished to share. “I think my style differs from other artists because I don’t only focus on the humanitarian issues that we face. I also focus on situations and circumstances that have fond memories and bring us close to the people we shared them with.” “I realized that it’s important to do that because we don’t always enjoy these moments when we are in them, but I hope my art can help the viewer relive the memories. I use a variety of mixed media to interpret this, including photographs I have taken myself.”

Saoud was commissioned by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage to digitally paint five walls for Al Qattara Art Centre, the first art centre in Al Ain. He was then selected as one of the 40 artists to display and sell their artwork at the DXB Store, a not-for-profit space that showcases limited edition objects designed and made in the UAE. Being an artist is always challenging, whether it is having your name recognized or your work understood. However, for Saoud, time remains the biggest challenge. “I don’t usually have enough time to complete my art. I stay late to finish work so that I can take days off.” Saoud’s message to young artists reflects his creative passion and his hometown surroundings. “I am inspired by the rich culture and heritage present in the UAE. I’ve always believed that if we didn’t have a past, we would not have a present or a future. So if I could say anything to aspiring artists it would be to work as hard as you possibly can and once you find your style focus on improving it all the time.”

DXB STORE LOCATIONS The DXB Store is based across three venues: Art Dubai- Madinat Jumeirah, Sikka- Bastakiya and Design Days Dubai- Downtown Dubai.

CAMPUS VIEW BY DORIAN ‘PAUL D’ ROGERS A MODERN POET’S TWIST ON THE ANCIENT CLASSICS OF RUMI

THE JOYS OF PARENTHOOD By Rohith Bhat

Every month, Paul D will take one of the classic poems and remix it with a contemporary spin. This month, he modernizes ‘The Guest House’ as translated by Coleman Barks.

THE GUEST HOUSE

TRANSLATED BY COLEMAN BARKS This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes As an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still treat each guest honourably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

THE BOARDING HOUSE BY DORIAN “PAUL D” ROGERS

My soul is a boarding house. Guests come daily through my revolving door. Misery just left a freshly widowed mother and traversed a two day’s journey to wipe its charcoaled feet at my doorstep. It snores like moans in its sleep. I offer it Earl Grey tea the next morning. It prefers no sugar. Fear rat-tat-tats with metallic fist and bolted knuckles. I chuckle at it with an awkward tone. We discuss the debts I owe it and iron out installment plans. Loneliness is wide and drapes the floor in the main room Like a Persian rug. No other guests find room to sit when it visits. They have no place else for respite and the plastic “Welcome” mat won’t make a liar out of me. So my boarding house stays fully occupied until these rolling stones feel it’s time to head on their unmerry way. When they do, I will clean with elbow grease and lemon and repentant prayer. To watch Paul D performing his version of ‘The Guest House’, go to www.youtube.com/tempoplanet If you have a poem that you would like Paul D to remix, send it to sharon@tempoplanet.com.

Having a little one of your own is both a joy and a chore. From the first moment you hold them in your hands until the time they require minimum supervision, it is a constant flux between pure joy and unbridled anger. The first thing I learnt as a parent was that I had to say goodbye to any nice things I owned. This was because they were all smashed, ripped to shreds, hidden and even occasionally peed on. The second thing I learnt is that until that blissful period comes when they need minimal supervision, your social life is quite simply, my friends, toast. Any vacation plans you may have are gone, unless you get a good sitter of course. And savings? Forget about it! A long list of expenses in the form of toys, replacement of valuables and medical expenses inevitably follow (if you know what I mean then kudos! You really do care!) But it’s not all bad. For one, coming home to a smiling face and the pure joy that you’re back simply makes up for any lost valuables. However, it is a chore; after all, who among us wants to learn about responsibility? Within a few weeks you are transformed from a happy carefree guy to a teacher, cleaner, round-the-clock care giver and occasional bodyguard. How occasional bodyguard, you ask? Let’s just say there are always elements out there more than willing to corrupt your little one’s innocence. You have to protect them from themselves when they somehow never learn to look both ways before running across the street and always manage to get their nose in one kind of mess or the other! Another thing you learn on the job is more about yourself. How many times have you rolled your eyes or given the occasional ‘tsk tsk’ at others for using the rod or screaming their heads off at their charges? And when it comes to dealing with your own little one, can one help but raise their voice or think about the rod when you have to wake up in the morning and your precious sleep is at stake? So last weekend when I met another in the same situation with her frizzled hair and messed-up shoes, I smiled and nodded at her question, “It’s a joy and a pain, isn’t it?” “So which ones yours?” she asked. Me: The fuzzy brown one on four legs!!

UPDATE RESOLUTION KEEPER

In January, Tempo put out a call to anyone who had made resolutions for 2012, with the promise to re-visit them at the end of the year to learn the outcomes. We received a number of responses from readers who volunteered to be a part of this initiative. As we pass the middle of the year, Tempo decided to remind a few of these brave souls about their pledges and find out what progress has been made to ensure these resolutions are being kept.

SIMONE CARVALHO

JAMES FRANKLIN

TAMSYN D’SOUZA

2012 RESOLUTIONS: Focus on her studies, eat less chocolate, become a better photographer and be a better person.

2012 RESOLUTIONS: Play in a concert, do well at university (University of Wollongong in Australia) and get a fantastic job doing something awesome in the media industry before the year ended.

2012 RESOLUTIONS: Shed 15 kilos by the end of the year, travel to either Spain or Italy, own a house and go on a Hollywood-style romantic dinner for the first time in her life!

UPDATE: Simone wanted to focus more on her studies as she had to write her IGCSE’s this year. “I did end up becoming more focused on my studies. I planned and laid out everything clearly which enabled me to become less distracted while studying. For my last two resolutions, I kept thinking it over and came to the conclusion that time and more life experiences would make me a better person and practice would improve my photography.” As for her resolution to eat less chocolate, Simone admits she caved. “It’s CHOCOLATE!”

UPDATE: “I have set myself up on SoundCloud and have had a couple of record labels express interest in possibly signing me. As for university, this semester hasn’t been as fantastic as the first one but I’ve been able to maintain a consistent credit average so I’m sort of keeping it. I have not found a job as yet but I have been playing an extremely active role in UOWTV, my university’s television station, as well as joining a production company created by some of my friends. We do projects every so often.”

UPDATE: Tamsyn said she had been watching her eating since February and while she hadn’t officially checked her weight, she felt she had lost about six kilos. As for the rest…“I am going to Spain, and I don’t have to pay a cent. My dreams are coming true with work ironically sending me there for training. I have been looking at options and communicating with people about a house of my own and as for the dinner, this hasn’t progressed very far. LOL! But there’s always hope!” To help Tamsyn reach her goal, The Slim School is offering her a free online membership with tips and advice on how to reach her goal weight and maintain it. www.theslimschool.com

YASSIN DAOUD

MANAR AL HINAI

JOSE TUANO

2012 RESOLUTIONS: Travel a lot, learn a new language, study psychology and hit the gym.

2012 RESOLUTIONS: Go to Hajj, learn Spanish, expand her clothing business and end the year as a writer for the New York Times.

2012 RESOLUTIONS: Improve as a photographer, as a person and become less lazy.

UPDATE: “Well, I am in Egypt now so does that count as travelling? I have begun studying Chinese and Italian but I haven’t hit the gym or started studying psychology as yet.”

UPDATE: Manar plans to go to Hajj in November, she has been picking up Spanish by listening to a tutorial CD in her car, has begun stocking her designs in a boutique in Dubai and is still hopeful about writing for the New York Times.

UPDATE: “I’m working on trying out some modelling photography over the summer. I’ll also be travelling a lot this year and next year which should be great for my photography. Being less lazy is still being worked on, haha! And as for being a better person, I’m always working on that!”

Alma Kadragic

MIDDLE EAST MEDIA EDUCATOR BRIDGING THE MEDIA KNOWLEDGE GAP A year ago I was finalizing the first issue of a new journal, Middle East Media Educator (MEME), published at the University of Wollongong in Dubai. The journal takes as its mission ‘to bridge the gap’ between the people who work in media and those who prepare students to work in media industries. I can’t claim to be original because MEME was inspired by the Australian journal called Asia Pacific Media Educator. Dr. Eric Loo, who teaches at the University of Wollongong near Sydney, started the journal in 1996 and has been editing it ever since. The phrase ‘to bridge the gap’ comes from him. Whilst working on Issue 2 of MEME, which is out this month, I couldn’t help thinking about how different it is putting together MEME in Abu Dhabi and Dubai - I live in Abu Dhabi and work in Dubai so writing and editing happen in both places – than it is in Australia where both media and academic life are far more organized.

26 | www.tempoplanet.com

The new issue of MEME will have 13 pieces, nine of them by academics and four by media practitioners. This is different from the first issue that also had 13 pieces but seven by academics and six by media practitioners. That came closer to generating the dialogue ‘to bridge the gap’ between media teaching and media practice. In recent months I turned to some of the top English language journalists in the UAE, asking them to write for MEME. The trouble with working journalists is that they are perpetually on tight deadlines. They also don’t like to write earlier than whatever is the ultimate deadline. But as the final deadline approached, three people I was counting on were: 1) away on assignment, 2) vacationing, and 3) tied up with extra work because colleagues were vacationing. As a former journalist, I know these things, and I tried to account for them; it didn’t work, and this has become my goal for the next issue of MEME which I hope will be published in January 2013. We had hoped to publish two issues last year. That didn’t work; we hope it will work this year. Although we don’t have as many contributions by journalists or media specialists, we have made progress in Issue 2 by adding more pieces about new ways of teaching media.

We have also included an interesting study by a postgraduate student in the US about the coverage there of the television series ‘AllAmerican Muslim’. Although the series wasn’t broadcast here, many people downloaded episodes from the internet because the program created a great deal of buzz in this region about Islam in the US.

If you are interested in checking out MEME, go to www.uowdubai.ac.ae/ publications and download Issue 2, August 2012.

MEME isn’t available for sale or subscription, but it is distributed at some local and international conferences. Write to me at alma.kadragic@gmail.com if you would like to find a hard copy.

ESTABLISHING A BUSINESS Establishing a business in the UAE has some special requirements, and the processes are not the same as they are in many other countries. Tamakkan asked Souad Al Hosani, President of Nexus Business Services, for advice on the documentation required for set-up here. “It really depends on the type of company being established. If it is a branch of a foreign company, the applicant will need the mother company’s commercial license or registration number, the board resolution for setting up the office in the other country, and the appointment of a general manager to finalize the paperwork. All papers must be attested and authenticated at the UAE Embassy abroad and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE. If the applicant is looking to set up a local LLC, then an MOA or shareholder agreement is needed. If it is an establishment, then no papers are required unless a foreigner owns 100% of the business; in this case, they need a local sponsor and a national agency agreement must be completed. From our experience, it takes four to six weeks for foreign companies to prepare documents abroad and, upon receiving the documents, it takes a business service agency like Nexus from two to five weeks to set up and obtain the licenses for the company, depending on the activities needed in the licenses and what approvals are required.” Find out more from Souad by visiting www.tamakkan.org and clicking on the Tamakkan 2 Minute Talks page. HIGHLIGHTING: PUBLIC RELATIONS Many start-up businesses have heard of public relations but don’t fully understand it. Some confuse it with publicity but in fact, public relations is so much more. As the name suggests, it is about developing good relations with the consumers who might purchase your product or service. There are a variety of ways to create good public relations. Publicity is certainly one way. This is where you send a press release to the media about a newsworthy event or happening at your company. You could even be commenting on some important news within your industry. However, other public relations activities include socially responsible programmes (CSR), events to attract publicity, promotions, conference speeches, books, blogs and social media. In fact, anything that conveys your message to your target markets falls under the broad category of public relations. Public relations is not always directed at the wider public. Companies may wish to influence government policy, or they might want to establish their credentials with industry bodies. Public relations also covers crisis communications where response is required to emergency or negative situations. Public relations is a specialized area of marketing, and whilst entrepreneurs may think they can do it themselves, in reality disastrous results can occur if it goes wrong – the media can sniff a controversial story from 20 kilometres away! The cost of hiring a professional PR company – and there are plenty of them around – to establish credibility and gain coverage is well worth the investment.

Tamakkan offers a range of professional skill workshops and team development events for companies, covering areas such as customer service, social media and communication. ROLE PLAYING DRESSING UP FOR FUN Cosplaying Halibel from Bleach

Maha dressed as Viletta Nu

Don’t take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive. Sometimes we all need to find a way to express ourselves. It could be writing, singing, dancing or painting. Others find more unconventional ways, like 27 year-old Maha Ismail who works as a secretary by day and dresses up cosplay-style by night. Maha likes to think, dress up and draw out of the box. I sat down with this infamous cosplayer and comic strip artist as she gives Tempo an insight into how she breaks the mold. For those not familiar with the term, cosplay, or costume play, is the art of dressing up as a character from a film, book, manga, anime or video game. Maha is a big manga and otaku anime fan. Cosplaying is how she likes to express herself in a creative way and not just by dressing up as the character but also by making the costume herself. “You feel like a rock star for a day when people ask to take pictures with you.” CREATING THE CHARACTER Maha began cosplaying in 2009 when she created her first outfit, Grell Sutcliff from The Black Butler Anime (Kuroshitsuji). “It was easy and fun to make since he is my favorite character from the show.” In the world of cosplay you can dress up any way you want, whether it’s a man, woman or even an ‘it’! That’s the beauty of being a part of cosplay; not only do you get to give up your identity but you get to wear and try out different ones just for fun!

28 | www.tempoplanet.com

Her favorite character to dress up as is Iwasawa from the Angel Beats! anime. “Iwasawa’s costume is really comfortable and we have a lot in common. My friend Ploy and I cosplayed her band ‘Girls Dead Monster’ in an event organized by the Dubai Anime Club. Cosplaying her was like being myself the whole day.” For Maha, cosplaying is almost addictive since there are so many characters and the creative possibilities are endless. Some of the characters she has tried out are: • • • • • • •

Grell Sutcliff - Kuroshitsuji Yoruichi - Bleach Mion - Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (when they cry) Road Kamelot - D.Gray-man Halibel - Bleach Villetta nu - Code Geass Iwasawa - Angel Beats!

SPREADING THE WORD Maha is all too aware that being passionate about cosplay, anime and manga in the UAE comes at a price. Due to the lack of awareness, people tend to complain when they see the cosplayers all dressed up for a competition but it is getting better, and the first Middle East Film & Comic Con held in Dubai definitely helped spread the word. “I think lots of people now have an idea about cosplaying so we just have to keep doing what we love to do and motivate others to join us.”

Maha and Ploy cosplaying ‘Girls Dead Monster’

For someone who has a busy schedule and a full time day job, Maha certainly knows how to have fun. Even though dressing up is frowned upon, she doesn’t take it to heart and finds solace and motivation from her equally talented friends in both the Dubai and Abu Dhabi Anime Clubs. Age, race, workload or gender does not stop any of them from expressing how they feel and what they are passionate about, as long as no one is getting hurt. Her advice for anyone who is eager to try out their hand in cosplaying? “Don’t be shy, be creative! After all, we are all mad here.”

horoscope Aries - No sooner do you comfortably nest in the serenity of your home than the planets deliver a party to your door. August is replete with fun, fancy and frolic for all Rams who can muster the energy. But as you get the party train on track, be sure to steer clear of Mars at the end of the month who is vying for a new direction. Taurus - Bulls can’t help but roar out the good news but will it come out as a squeak? There are many planets hovering in Cancer in early August and, as they trek into Leo, you may find yourself embroiled in family affairs. Is there a friend in sight? Perhaps, but with retro Mars conjuncting planet Uranus, you find that pals spark a few unwanted changes with their big opinions. Gemini - Cash in on your good fortune early in August when the planets find a way to pay your bills. But don’t go crazy on the charge card; by mid-month your interests veer to putting out fires in your career. Twins should not take any professional action unless absolutely necessary. Cancer - How do you like all this wonderful attention, Crab? There are five planets dancing in your sign this August and you cannot help but be charming and charismatic. So woo them while you can and celebrate when the planets swerve into Leo.You turn your attention to financial issues. Can money buy happiness? Let’s find out! Leo - There are quite a few planets transiting Cancer in early August and Lions may feel quite a bit intuitive. But before you bank too much on your profound insights, the planets move into your own sign and you are pushed into centre stage. You will be far too busy meeting and greeting to get caught up in your solitary thoughts. Virgo - Virgos are popularity-plus this August as far-flung friends find you. Haul out the drinks and chips and have a great time. But as the month edges forward, you may find yourself more philosophical and spiritual. Planets in Leo suggest that there may be more to life than just a good time. Libra - August turns your attention to professional goals. Libras are poised and ready for success as many planets cluster in Cancer. But all work and no play makes for a very dull summer. Thank goodness there is a planetary march into Leo mid-month.You are thrust into the social swim so pack your bathing cap and dive in. Retro Mars messes up your work projects anyway. Scorpio - Scorpios cannot be tied in or tied down, as much as one would try. This August promises a bevy of interesting adventures across a range of exotic locations. Make your tracks before the planets shift into Leo in mid-month and you are parachuted into the corporate arena. Ready to make a name for yourself? Sagittarius - There is something exciting about these planets in Cancer. Archers are suddenly ready, raring and roasty hot. What a change of pace! But make hay while the sun shines, Sadge; by midAugust the planets shift and so do you. Travel awaits those who plan ahead. Do so immediately; Mars retrogrades on the 29th and upends home projects. Escape while escaping is good! Capricorn - Relationships take up more of your attention in early August as the planets hover in emotional Cancer. Caps can reinforce relationships or seek new ones, as they wish. By mid-August, the planets move into Leo and heat up partnerships to a new level of intimacy. See what you can find out. Retrograde Mars will make any move landscape changing. Aquarius - Even though the summer sizzles, Aquarians are content to take care of the nitty gritty rather than play. August offers you a great opportunity to buckle down and get any onerous pile of tasks taken care of before the planets move on into Leo mid-month. After that you are drawn to creating and maintaining relationships. Can you buy love? Pisces - Toss your troubles to the four winds, at least in early August when planets in Cancer make life too fun and giddy for too much serious application. Pisces need a break! Enjoy it while you can. Planets edge into Leo mid-month and turn up the speed on your treadmill and grindstone. Work it and get it out of the way.

A model showcasing Keswah’s latest collection

KESWAH

EMIRATI FASHION LABEL Three Emirati girls from Al Ain have joined forces to launch Keswah, a traditional yet modern clothing label. I recently interviewed the lovely team behind Keswah, who prefer to remain anonymous, about their range of contemporary jalabiyas and traditional Khaleeji kaftans. What does ‘Keswah’ mean and why did you choose the name? Keswah (‫ كسوة‬in Arabic) means clothing. Here in the UAE, women send each other gifts of clothing, perfumes, fabrics, jalabiyas and so on. These kinds of gifts are called Keswah. We like to think of our work as a gift to stylish ladies who appreciate good quality and easy to wear clothes or kaftans. Why design jalabiyas or kaftans instead of modern clothing? There are a lot of different clothing items available in the market and we feel that the jalabiya, which is an essential clothing item

in every female Emirati wardrobe, is being neglected by designers. So our aim is to revive and upgrade the jalabiya-style concept to make it more trendy and wearable. However, we did design skirts for our Summer 2012 collection and styled them to create a traditional modern look. Teaming with Lucky-Nooni t-shirts helped us deliver the look we aimed for. When did you launch your brand? SpringSummer 2011 was our first launch and collection. Many ladies get tailors to design their own jalabiyas or prefer modern clothing. Do you face any difficulties marketing your brands to customers? We think our customers fall between the two categories you have mentioned. They do like to wear both tailored jalabiyas and modern clothing, and Keswah happens to give that mix to our customers.

are wearable for Ramadan and Eid. We have both casual and formal wear in our range. Who stocks your current collection? We have an online shop with delivery all over the GCC and internationally. Edge Boutique in Kuwait also stocks our items. Any advice for young designers? Don’t ever let the obstacles and challenges hold you down. As Oprah said: “The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you’re willing to work.” So be persistent and positive.

KEEP UPDATED Find out more about Keswah and its Summer 2012 collection at www.keswah.com

What media platforms do you use? Mainly blogs and online magazines. Is the UAE your main customer base? Surprisingly we’re receiving lots of good feedback and orders from all over the GCC. Many girls wear jalabiyas during Ramadan. What is your Ramadan collection like? In our Summer 2012 collection, we designed items that
