The months seem to go faster and faster (or maybe it’s just as you get older, I wonder!) I can’t believe Sales Executive: David Hall

that the summer is drawing to an end and that we’ve just put this, our September issue to bed. We’ve managed to make this a jam-packed issue for you, full of lots of interesting features as well as our popular regulars. One that I have made note of is our travel feature this month on Malta. It sounds like a beautiful

island. And being in the Mediterranean, attracts those hot rays of sunshine (something I’ve missed this summer; it seems to have rained wherever I’ve been!) The Maltese way of life sounds very appealing and the scenery looks quite stunning. Malta has become a popular destination for superyachts mooring up too; imagine basking in the sun upon a yacht on the Maltese coast (well, one

can imagine.) (Page 50.) Mind you, I can’t complain. I enjoyed a nice treat myself this month at Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa. Famous for its wonderful spa and for winning the ‘best small hotel in the world,’ my husband Paul and I weren’t disappointed when we enjoyed a long (and very lazy) weekend there in the heart of the

Parker’s advice and visit our neighbouring town, Worthing. ‘Worthing?’ I hear you say. Yes, having read Tim’s article, it refreshed my mind of how much there is to do and see in the seaside town, and what a pretty place it is. As Tim rightfully remarks on how lovely the promenade is, I too recall how when I took a walk along there a few months ago for the first time, how beautiful and almost Mediterranean looking the palm trees and flowers were. And it’s so near to the city, so is ideal for a change of scene. (Page 54) Well, however you spend the last few weeks of your summer, we at the Absolute Brighton team wish you a very happy (and hopefully warm) one!

ABSOLUTE PEOPLE

A year in office As the current Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Ann Norman is fulfilling an important role that interests and intrigues most people. So what does this VIP role in our City involve? Verity Craig asks The Mayor. Firstly, should I address you as Mayor, Mayoress or Lady Mayor (or something else)? The absolutely correct title is ‘The Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Brighton & Hove’, but I am very happy to be called Ann. So Ann, how did you start your journey to becoming the Mayor of Brighton & Hove? I have always been involved in politics as my Mother was a Brighton Councillor and so, for as long as I can remember, I have had friends in all political parties. I became a Councillor representing Withdean Ward in the first Unitary Authority elections in 1996 – the same Ward as I represent today. Did you always envisage yourself in that important position someday? I never had aspirations for any high office, always seeing myself as a ‘behind the scenes’ person working for the benefit of residents of Brighton & Hove. Are you a true Brightonian? I was born in Brighton, and therefore proudly consider myself to be a true Brightonian. As Mayor, I not only represent Brighton, but am very proud to be representing the residents of Hove and Portslade as well. What do you think makes our City such a bright and vibrant place in which to live? Brighton & Hove is an absolutely fabulous place in which to live, and I never lose an opportunity to tell everyone what a truly great place it is. There is something in the City for everyone, and this is backed up by the many who visit and decide to stay on as residents. The great generosity and friendship offered by everyone in the City is always evident and this, together with the huge variety of amenities on offer in Brighton & Hove, really does make this “the place to be”. Your current role as Mayor must take up a lot of your time. Is it a 7 day week 24-hour job? Yes, absolutely, it really is almost a 24/7 job which is great although, in the last few weeks, on a number of occasions, we have worked a fifteen hour day – and then there’s my normal Ward work to add to that. Very briefly, what does your average day entail? Answer as many emails as I can early in the morning – before breakfast, if possible. The Ward work continues apace, for although I am Mayor, residents do have problems that need to be dealt with as a

18

matter of urgency. I’m lucky because my husband Ken, another Withdean Ward Councillor, and my colleague Councillor Pat Drake, are also working with resident queries as well. We usually have three or four events a day to attend, although we have had seven events in a single day. My feeling is that this is too many as you really only have time to look in, say “hello” and rush out again. Functions are generally spread throughout the day, morning, lunchtime, late afternoon, and perhaps evening. The difficulty is in finding time to do my personal shopping. On one Monday morning I discovered that we hadn’t any milk, bread, cereal or fruit but, thankfully, Ken is a really good food shopper, although he does have his post as Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care & Health to manage as well. Now, I hear that we both went to the same school. What are your memories of school life? Yes, that was quite exciting as I have only met just a handful. I actually attended the Towers sister school (the Convent of the Blessed Sacrament in Eastern Road, Brighton) and I must say that I do recall my school days with very fond memories. I wasn’t much good at sport, only netball, running and long jump, but absolutely loved mathematics and science classes. I recall my Headmistress hitching up her long nun’s skirt whenever she played tennis, and she was really good at the game. Do you always wear the full mayoral attire? I wear full mayoral attire for Civic occasions – Annual Council, special Civic Church Services, Citizenship Ceremonies, University Graduation Ceremonies, for Remembrance Sunday Services throughout the City, and to visit Brighton & Hove Schools if they would like me to attend with the full regalia, and at other very special civic occasions such as visits by Royalty. In most of these cases, Robert Robertson, our wonderful City Macebearer, will attend wearing his civic uniform and carrying the City Mace.

“Brighton & Hove is an absolutely fabulous place in which to live, and I never lose an opportunity to tell everyone what a truly great place it is.”

What have you enjoyed about your role as Mayor so far? I have attended so many really enjoyable events to date – but the one that will be most memorable for me was travelling on an open top bus for a tour of the City with our Special Olympics team, who competed at Leicester recently, and came home with 23 medals. That truly was a wonderful time. The Martlets Midnight Walk was pretty special too, and I do still have some blisters to show for the event, but that’s alright, as I managed to raise a very considerable sum of sponsorship for the Martlets Hospice. What key things are you hoping to carry out as Mayor, to leave a bit of a legacy? I do want to meet as many residents and visitors to the City that I can fit in during the year. I have four charities that I’m supporting during the year: the Martlets Hospice, the Alzheimers Society, the Sussex Heart Charity and the Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals. All of these charities desperately need finance to continue the fantastic work they carry out to provide care that is outside that provided by the NHS. My Charity Committee is working hard to ensure we raise as much money as possible for our charities. We do also have a number of places reserved for the Mayor’s Charities in the forthcoming Brighton & Hove Marathon. With all fundraising going directly to my chosen charities, this will be a very welcome bonus to other fundraising. Over and above this, the Mayor’s Parlour is available for use to other local charities, either to promote their charity or to fund-raise. This is, of course, subject to availability of the Mayor’s Parlour. Anyone interested should contact Mrs. Dines (contact details below.) If someone would like you to attend an event/launch that they are organizing, how should they do this? I’m always happy to attend any function if asked, if time permits, and anyone who would like to ask me to attend should contact my terrific Mayoral Secretary, Mrs. Pat Dines by either telephoning on 01273 1223/5 or by email on: mayorsoffice@brighton-hove.gov.uk Should it only be events in Brighton & Hove? I have attended events outside of the boundary of Brighton & Hove, particularly if they have some connection with the city, but my office always contacts the Mayor or Chairman of the host city or town to ensure they are happy for me to do so.

Redhead La Roux says Bill had no influence

La Roux front-woman Elly Jackson says having a famous mother didn’t help her climb the ladder to stardom as some folks have pointed out. “Mum (Trudie Goodwin) is best known for playing Sergeant June Ackland in The Bill and that’s a far cry from what I’m doing”, says the red-head who says the band’s musical influences including the current hit ‘Bulletproof’ comes from 1980s synthpop sounds; Yazoo, The Human League, Heaven 17 and Blancmange. “I’m asked where the name came from too” says Elly, “And no, I wasn’t a Danny LaRue fan as a kid. I saw the name in a baby book of names and stopped at ‘LaRoux’ (the red-haired one) and decided ‘that’s the one for me.’”

Strange goings on of the golden gongs It’s always been fascinating to learn where stars keep their Academy Awards and other honours. 1930s star Luise Rainer, and the first actress to win back-to-back Best Actress Oscars uses hers as door stops in her Eaton Square apartment. ‘Planet of the Ape’s’ (1968) make up man John Chambers kept his under the kitchen sink and Sandy Dennis who won for her role as Honey in ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ (1966) used her Best Actress Oscar as a garden ornament! But the most surprising by far is Sir Ian Mckellen who although not an Oscar winner has won a plethora of other prizes; McKellen who was nominated for ‘God’s & Monsters’ (1999) and ‘Lord of the Rings’ (2002), won’t be offended if he’s not nominated for any golden gongs this year. The thespian actor feels such honours are surplus to demand and keeps them exposed to the elements in a jumbled heap on his balcony.

Irons tells wife enough is enough Jeremy Irons says he has banned his wife actress Sinead Cussak from taking in any more stray dogs. “We’ve two stray mutts she picked up in New York,” Jeremy told me. “I’ve leant to love them but have told her, no more please!” Irons who tells me he is turning down nothing right now as he wants to work throughout the current recession added, “the pair of pooches do keep me fit I suppose and there’s plenty of room in my Audi estate for them to frolic about in… I make sure they eat well!” he said while puffing on a cigarette. “I eat well too, I’d never get any parts offered to me otherwise! And who wants an Irons with a big belly?”

Bowie and Dietrich were to Rock Friends of the late David Hemmings, the acting force behind films like ‘Blow-Up’ (1966) and ‘Barbarella’ (1968) with Jane Fonda, recall as a director he was obsessive and very determined with incredible persuasive powers making it almost impossible to say no to a request. It was Hemmings who in 1978 convinced movie legend Marlene Dietrich out of retirement and back on the silver screen for his film ‘Just a Gigolo’. A friend of the director and actor said they are sure he ‘bent’ the truth a little to get her on board. “He promised Marlene that he’d shoot her through five filters which he did giving her a ghostly appearance and then said that her co-star David Bowie may pen her some pop songs with the added temptation of a duet,” said the friend. It was common knowledge that Marlene adored Bowie and so she couldn’t get to the set quick enough. David Bowie recalled later how Marlene flirted with him and said how they were ‘to make beautiful music together.’ Bowie said later that he was sorry nothing materialized.

Lord Freddie chooses Hampton Court and a Hollywood starlet Lord Freddie Windsor is keeping up with Royal tradition by opting for Hardy Amies to dress him for his September 12th wedding to actress Sophie Winkleman. “I’m so thrilled with the cut and the cloth and the fact that I’m keeping the link between the house of Windsor and Hardy Amies.” Sir Hardy Amies dressed the Queen from her ascension to the throne to his retirement in the 1990s and also designed wardrobes for Freddie’s mother Princess Michael of Kent, Princess Alice of Athlone, Princess Margaret as well as stars Ava Gardner, Michael York and Peter Sellers. The Windsor wedding is set to take place at Hampton Court Palace. “We are so excited,” Princess Michael of Kent told me. “It’s the first Royal marriage at Hampton Court since Henry VIII married Catherine Parr – I do hope nobody losses their head!” Freddie and Sophie (the step sister of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ presenter Claudia Winkleman) are currently house hunting in LA where Sophie’s been working of late. “I’ve never been to LA,” Freddie told me before he left for the airport. “I’m liking the idea of the Hollywood Hills though.” The pair are also working on an idea for a script. The very charming Freddie, who was formally the face of Burberry, said, “I’m not shouting about it yet – we’ll see how it goes.” O-Bitch-Uary sends you its congratulations and hope’s you’ll both be very happy.

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW

A sporting passion shared

Clare with Peter Charles on the Derby Bank 2009

T

o most of us, Clare Balding is the television presenter that we associate with sport. Hardly a week passes when she is not at one of the country’s major race meetings, or fronting a major event like the Olympics. She has a pleasant television personality, and what so many like about her is that she comes across as a very knowledgeable person. I had the opportunity to chat to Clare at this year’s Hickstead Derby Meeting, where she was presenting the DFS Derby event live on television. Back in 2008, while I was sitting in the press office, I happened to overhear Clare phoning her bookmaker to place a bet on a horse at a race meeting. I did not intend to eavesdrop but heard the name of the horse, and although I am not a betting person, I decided to have a go, and put a sum on that horse. You have guessed - it won. My only claim to fame is that Clare Balding gave me the name of a winning horse! It is now twelve months later and Clare is again in the press office, having her make-up put on ready for television, and she has given me this opportunity to have a chat. A bit different, I thought, as I sat between her and a member of the make-up team, holding my tape machine, and trying to keep it away from the odd bit of mascara and lipstick! This is going to be fun I said to myself. Clare has always loved horses, being brought up with them from day one. I asked her first of all about Hickstead as a venue; “Fabulous – I was just saying to Graham Fletcher there are very few things in the sporting world that are genuinely unique, and Hickstead is - and this 22

Clare Balding has made a name for herself as a knowledgeable and popular sports presenter on radio and television. John Periam caught up with her recently at one of her favourite venues

event is! I rode here as a child in the school’s showjumping final, and I remember riding into the international arena when I was fifteen. It is massive, and when you get into it, you think where am I? It feels like you are in the middle of a cross country course. It has a very special aura and the Derby Bank makes it the Grand National of the show jumping world (I don’t like to compare events but this venue is special). Some of the jumps are similar and people think they know the course, but they can never predict how the horses are going to react to it, or riders are going to cope with it. It has the perfect blend of familiarity and unpredictability.” Did Clare have any ambitions to carry on in showjumping following her visit to Hickstead when she was young? “To be honest, I loved eventing and had dreams like many young girls of wanting to compete at Badminton or the Olympics. Being part of the BBC, attending these events, you do feel you are part of the British Team but the British Media Team so I got as close as I could get,” she said with a laugh. Being bought up in the equestrian world by her parents has been a wonderful experience for Clare. Her brother Andrew is a very successful racing trainer (I found out that the bet I put on was one of her brother’s horses!) To go into this with her brother is not on her list: “it is not easy going into a family run business. For example Tina Cook (Gifford) lives at home and she has a lot of input into the racing there, doing a lot of pre training with the horses and driving the horse boxes. In my case I do not live in Kingsclere, Newbury although I go to visit the stables a fair amount - Andrew would be the first to admit

I know nothing about business. Who knows, perhaps one day I may have a bigger involvement in the stud, which is run by my mother Emma, but the yard I will leave to him to run and he is doing it very well indeed. “There are times that I do meet people that I think would be good owners for Andrew, and if they express an interest in racing I will put them in touch with him. I do have the opportunity to help, and one contact has already lead to Andrew having seven two years olds with him now at his yard, so that’s good!” Do you bet, I asked? “Oh yeah!” She said with a smile. I backed the winner of the Epsom Derby

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW An interview with William Funnell

“...I try to be true to that event, the winner of it, and those that have not won, while trying to convey a bit of the magic.” and yesterday, Andrew phoned me and said I have four horses that should win and you should have a Yankee - I was at Wimbledon and phoned placing the bet, but none of them won. One day Andrew will get it right and I will benefit. He keeps telling me that if I listen to his tips I will be a millionaire - so I do just that!” The enthusiasm bounds out of Clare and her love of anything equestrian really shows.

I get a real buzz from being with horses and I am so lucky. Clare covers all types of equestrian sport, and I asked her what is the one that gives her the ‘Tingle Factor’. “I really feel strongly about eventing - it is the greatest test of horsemanship and I think it is the connection between horse and rider that is so strong, with the partnership being based on complete trust and understanding. Mark Todd can get on a strange horse and win Badminton - very few people can do that - likewise a rider can do the same at Hickstead and Ascot. It does not happen often but when it does it is a wonderful experience for all concerned. I do really enjoy all equestrian sport, even the showing classes. I would not give up one for another - I love the combination of them. I get a real buzz from being with horses and I am so lucky. “You make choices in life and when I left Cambridge University (where she was elected President of the Union in 1992), I decided that broadcasting was what I wanted to do. I knew at the time that I would not be able to work and ride at the same time, so I took that option and as it happened, it has turned out be the right thing for me. You make one sacrifice and you get other opportunities.” Clare started in radio doing racing bulletins on what was Radio Five and is now Five Live. “I then got offered a job as a trainee - the team that taught me is very much responsible for where I am to-day and I owe them a lot.” I referred to another of my favourite radio programmes ‘Ramblings’ which has been going for ten years - It brings back fond memories of

‘Down Your Way’. Clare has a great radio voice and the way she interviews the characters she meets makes this series. To some people, radio is their only means of communication and often gives the listener the opportunity to imagine the place she is visiting – and Clare does it very well! She added “My geography of this country is based on events, venues and racecourses. As a result of this programme I now know of venues that don’t have a racecourse,” she said laughing. “Television is a very exposing job and there are few areas in which you are judged every day at work by a large number of people who have never met you – you are in their living room – they sort of need to warm to you otherwise they will switch over to another channel. I love what I do and really enjoy the events that I cover. Not everyone is going to like me and I can’t control that – I make sure I am well informed when I get to an event so I can convey some of the excitement of what we are watching and trying to think of words very quickly - it is a lot different to writing an article,” she said. “You have to react immediately and get it right on television, and I do know that to my cost. I try to be true to that event, the winner of it, and those that have not won, while trying to convey a bit of the magic.” It was time for the make-up to end and Clare had to get to a pre-production meeting. There have been some health concerns for her recently but the good news is that all is now looking fine. Taking life in her stride she said a few weeks into treatment she sounded like Kermit the Frog. Today it was back to normal. She says she has the full support of her partner Alice, brother Andrew, her father Ian and mother Emma, and they all have been a tower of strength during the past few months.

With Tim Stockdale

Later that afternoon I watch Clare taking her work in her stride interviewing many of the top riders - sharing a joke or two with them while acting very professional. Her love and knowledge of horses shows, as does her deep interest in equestrian sports, and the way she works with the BBC team that support her behind the scenes.

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW

Life after the football field Once a renowned footballer, and now a respected television pundit, Gary Linekar talks to Danny Masters about today’s game, getting older and shaving... Match of the Day is 45 years old this year. What’s the key to its longevity? Apart from the presenter you mean? Seriously, it helps that these days we have highlights of every single match and you can pretty much make any game look good in five minutes. So it’s a really convenient way for people to catch up on football, especially those who don’t have time to sit down and watch a lot of live football. I just think it’s one of those shows where the whole package works. It doesn’t take itself too seriously but at the same time takes the football seriously. It concentrates on the action without too much chat which seems to be what people want. And it’s managed to get that balance right throughout all the years its been on. Can you remember the first Match of the Day you ever saw? I can’t remember the first game I ever saw on it. But from the age of 8 or 9 I remember sitting down and watching it every single Saturday night with my parents and my brother.

“When I played in Spain, I nearly got booked for smiling” What’s your biggest gripe with today’s players? Diving was always prevelant on the continent and with more foreign players in the English game than ever before, it’s definitely something that’s crept more into our game. The thing is, having played in Spain, I know it’s actually considered part of the parcel of the game over there. The conning of referees was never as highly frowned upon as it is over here. But I do find that irritating. What one rule change would you make? I’d do something about the over-protection of defenders and goalkeepers in the area. If a foul is given in the penalty area, 99 times out of 100, it goes to a defender. As a forward, that used to irritate me no end and it still does today. Did you have to work hard at being a presenter or did it come naturally? I had to work very hard at it. I did a lot of writing for newspapers and worked for Radio 5 to get a feel for it. Then I was very fortunate to work

26

for many years with Des Lynam who’s one of the greatest ever sports presenters and I learnt so much from him. Which other sports presenters do you admire –are you a fan of Sky’s Jeff Stelling? Jeff’s show is on Saturdays so I don’t get much chance to see him. But the occasional shows I’ve seen he does very well. It’s more of a radio style but clearly he does it brilliantly. Steve Rider is incredibly smooth and never makes a mistake. And Sue Barker, who I work with on Sports Personality of the Year, is effortlessly brilliant. Which current player do you think would make a great future pundit or MOTD presenter? Gareth Southgate is an intelligent guy who would have been a very good pundit but he decided to take the management route. You’re looking for players with a degree of intelligence and who articulate themselves well – David James always speaks well so he’d be good. Then you’ve got players who have got a good sense of humour like Jimmy Bullard and Peter Crouch. With his international background and personality, Peter would be great on TV. David Beckham would also be good but I don’t think he’d ever do it. I’ve always thought Frank Lampard has got all the makings of a very good presenter but would he want to do it when his career’s over? You famously never got booked in your football career. What was the closest you came to it? When I played in Spain, I nearly got booked for smiling. Smiling? Yeah, it was just ironic - smiling at the ref for a bizarre decision. I only think he didn’t book me because it would’ve been a tough one to write down in his notepad. Now you’re a tad more mature, what would you say is the best age to be? Being in your thirties is actually the best. You’re still young but you have a bit more experience and physically you’re still in pretty good shape. I’ve tried to carry that on into my forties but believe me, it’s hard. Are any of your four sons likely to follow in your footsteps as a footballer? Well, Tobias is at Chelsea’s academy and shows promise but I just want him to enjoy his football. All I care about is that all the boys have a great

time playing sport. It doesn’t matter what level they find, as long as they enjoy it and give it their best. I think it teaches kids a great deal about life, about winning and losing and about dealing with things that go wrong and things that go right. It’s good socially - it keeps them together and they make lots of friends and it can keep them out of trouble a bit when they’re older as well. So I’ll always encourage them to play sport but I’m not going to push them, but ultimately, they’ll either be good enough or they won’t. It’s very difficult now and there’s so much competition. How did you meet Danielle (Gary’s fiance, model Danielle Bux)? We met at an Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge and were introduced by a mutual friend. It was a bit of a blind date - the only blind date I’ve ever been on. But I was beginning to despair of ever meeting ‘the one’. My mate told me Danielle was gorgeous but I’ve seen his ‘gorgeous’ before. So I Googled her and just thought ‘wow.’ When I found Danielle, I knew I’d found someone special. Before you met, was it a bit weird being single? Being on my own was interesting, at times. But it was less appealing than it sounded. I really was starting to think there wasn’t anyone out there. Maybe I was too defensive. A man in my position, you’ve got to wonder whether women are coming on to you for the right reasons. Are the pair of you similar? She’s much feistier than I am. When we row, I sulk but she throws plates! She’s also a great cook and I’m hopeless. And she’s very witty and smart! Finally, is it true you’ve never had to shave? Yes it’s a family trait. My face is like a baby’s bottom!

Celebrity steal their

style

By Mark Woolley

Leading WAG and northern lass, Cheryl Cole has brought back an old trend for vibrant red hair when she stepped out with her hair dyed a burgundy colour and I’m sure it won’t be long before everyone is following her lead; cool chick Peaches Geldof has already been seen with a similar purple hue just a few days later. In a very Sharon Osbourne-esque look, Cheryl’s opted for a red hue that shows up depending on the lighting – deeper in the dark, brighter in the daylight. It’s a bit of fun for Cheryl so I wouldn’t be surprised if she goes back to her natural colour soon. When you’re as

Before

pretty as Cheryl Cole you can get away with most things, but it is essential for other mere mortals, as with any colour change, of working with skin tones and personality when you opt for fun colours to create the perfect shade. The advantage to these types of colours, is that it is not necessary to have a permanent dye job, a simple all over semi-permanent tint that will gradually fade away will do the job! After

LETTER OF THE MONTH I have just come back from a 2 week holiday and my hair doesn’t feel or look too great, what can I do to improve it? Having a deep conditioning treatment in a salon works wonders for restoring hair glory. An intense salon professional treatment like a Kerastase Ritual will make a real difference to your hair, especially if you ensure it’s a regular thing. Keep it up at home with regular use of a good product like Kerastase, it is worth the investment. I’d advise that you book into the salon within a week of returning from holiday to have a good trim, conditioning treatment plus any colour fading can be masked by a semi-permanent to ensure it lasts as long as usual. The best way to replace lost sheen from the sun is to have an in-salon vegetable gloss colour - there is simply nothing like it to make hair look shiny and replacing lost depth and tone caused by colour fade.

ESSENTIAL PRODUCTS TO

maintain this look Fudge Paintbox is all you need to achieve Cheryl Cole’s hue. The 12 tantalising and flamboyant shades can be used alone or intermixed to create more bespoke looks. Cheryl’s intense burgundy colour can be achieved using Vendetta Red, but there are a further 5 red tones, as well as a selection of purple shades The L’Oreal Professionnel Vitamino colour range with Incell Hydro-resist technology has a double locking system for advanced colour protection and longer lasting radiance for coloured hair. The vitamin colour range leaves your hair ultra shiny, silky, protected and nourished with prolonged beautiful colour.

STRAIGHT TALK With such advances in dental technology, there is much talk of the new whitening methods available. However, a straight smile can also now be painlessly and easily achieved. Dr Farrokh Sharifzad from Marina Dentalcare discusses

T

he uptake of cosmetic dental procedures has seen an unprecedented increase in recent years. This increase is largely attributed to popular media influences such as television programmes (10 Years Younger, Extreme Makeover), glossy fashion magazines and pictures of glamorous Hollywood (and Bollywood) celebrities. So what then is the perfect smile? The teeth are straight and not crooked. They are evenly-spaced with no gaps between the teeth and the teeth are not overcrowded or overlapped. The teeth are also white and not stained and the top teeth show fully when you smile but not a lot of gums above them show. What is the solution if you don’t have the perfect smile? There are an increasing number of ways that cosmetic dentistry can help improve your smile: orthodontic treatment, smile makeovers using porcelain/resin veneers or crowns and tooth whitening. Certainly, if teeth are darkened and stained then whitening is the choice of treatment. For teeth that are broken or in need of re-

“Invisalign is an invisible way to straighten teeth without the need for metal wires and brackets. It uses a series of clear plastic aligners to gradually straighten teeth” 34

shaping then veneers and crowns are called for. Individuals that have crooked, crowded or overlapping teeth are perfect candidates for orthodontic treatment which will be our main focus here. Traditional orthodontics requires the placement of metal brackets and wires to straighten the teeth and align them so that the best natural cosmetic and functional appearance is achieved. However, “train tracks” or “railway tracks” as it is affectionately known is not very appealing and deemed unsightly. There is an alternative and this is the Invisalign technique. Invisalign is an invisible way to straighten teeth without the need for metal wires and brackets. It uses a series of clear plastic aligners to gradually straighten teeth. The aligners are clear (no one needs to know you are in treatment), comfortable (there are no metal wires or brackets poking the insides of your cheeks or lips) and removable (so normal brushing and flossing can be maintained) and this is what makes it ideal for use in adults and teenagers. Invisalign is unique in that it uses a 3-D computer imaging technology to formulate a treatment plan so that the end result can be visualized before the treatment has even started. Here is how you get started Dentists and orthodontists need special training to provide Invisalign in their practices. I am such practitioner that has been trained, and introduced Invisalign to Brighton and Hove. Marina Dentalcare is devoted exclusively to providing high quality cosmetic treatment, in particular Invisalign treatment.

Before

After

To start the treatment, I will schedule a consultation to discuss your case. Photographs, XRays, and moulds of your teeth are required to design a treatment plan. Invisalign will then generate the final result using the 3-D software program. Once you are happy with the end result, the aligners are manufactured. Each aligner needs to be worn for 2 weeks before changing to the next one in the series. Treatment time can be approximately 10 months, but more complex cases will take longer. Once treatment is complete, the teeth can also be whitened making the perfect end of your journey to the perfect smile. ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING

FEAR OR PHOBIA? Each month, Free Spirit Coaching respond to one of our reader's letters for guidance on an issue bothering them. This month's letter asks: "Please can you help me - I have an irrational fear of cats. My mother says I have a phobia. My boyfriend's mother and stepfather have two cats and his father even has a cat in a flat! My boyfriend is now talking about the future for us together and to my horror has taken it for granted we will get a cat if we move in together! I am having sleepless nights. Can life coaching help?" Joanne, Brighton, age 24 Dear Joanne, Sorry to hear you're having sleepless nights. In the event you do have a phobia we would refer you on to a specialist cognitive therapist. We can however help you to make the decision to confront your fears. We would also advise you to be open with your partner about your anxieties. Specific phobias usually start in childhood. A phobia is an extreme fear of an object or situation apparently affecting 1 in 10 of the population! Most people do appear to have some sort of fear, for example; needles, blood, snakes, etc. What is a fear as apposed to a phobia? You state you have an irrational fear of cats, and you are probably able to manage your life well without

encountering them. Given your new relationship situation, you have now been confronted with the phobia. It must have been dreadful for you meeting the parents who have cats! You may well be aware your fear is unreasonable, but this doesn’t help you to overcome it. Firstly we would suggest you assess the situation: The treatment from a cognitive therapist called Systematic Desensitization is considered very effective, proven to help 75% of the those treated. The treatment is available on the NHS. Your doctor will be able to refer you if they feel it warrants treatment. Don't feel embarrassed about a visit - doctors get visits regularly from patients with fears. In the meantime, we can offer you simple measures to try and it may be all you need. Self help: Draw a picture of a cat - you don't have to be Picasso! Spend time looking at your art. Graduate to a photo in a magazine, library or the Internet. Progress by visualising a tiny kitten, (you could even purchase a toy cat). This underpinning ground work will help you. Remember you are a quarter of the way to combating the fear by addressing it! In the event you want to learn more or have life coaching, please contact Terrina Clifton–Moore and Georgina Paget through www.freespirit.com

ABSOLUTE HEALTH

Ouch, What A Headache! Nothing will ruin a beautiful summer’s day like a bad headache or a horrendous migraine. And with our fast paced way of life these days, the current credit crunch and far too little relaxation, it is not surprising that so many people are suffering from headaches and migraines on a regular basis. Our health expert Sheryl Waters gives tips on how to relieve and prevent these often debilitating ailments

M

igraines are very agonising headaches that are generally experienced on one side of the head. They come in attacks and are accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and obscurities in vision, with a general feeling of being unwell. Give the Body What it Needs The first thing to do if you suffer from headaches or migraines (and frankly, even if you don’t) is to cut out monosodium glutamate (MSG), hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, various preservatives, artificial sweeteners and anything that is created by man! These foods make the body work hard and overheat, easily bringing on a headache. Aspartame has been linked to headaches and migraines too, so watch out for foods that claim to be ‘sugar free.’ Processed foods are virtually dead in terms of their life energies, so they offer the body nothing but work and a headache (or various other illnesses.) Studies show that some of the best foods for headaches include radishes, onions, celery and cilantro. These foods cool the body, taking the headache with it. Next on the list is to drink more water. Chronic dehydration is perhaps the greatest cause of headaches and migraines, as well as many other diseases. Coffee, black tea and fizzy drinks are not water, and in fact can dehydrate the body even more, causing more harm than good. Pure water helps the kidneys to function properly while detoxifying the body, which prevents and eases headaches. Everyone should drink at least two litres of water per day. Some say body drought is in fact the greatest stress the body can endure. Many people claim that their headache comes on when they skip a meal. Balanced blood sugar levels are important for preventing imbalances that lead to headaches. Ensure that you eat 3 meals per day and eat a proper breakfast. Nuts, seeds, pulses, fruits and veggies are good foods for maintaining balance, while sugar, bread and processed foods throw the blood sugar out of whack. While you can’t control your environment completely, certain smells are known to trigger headaches and migraines too. Perfumes, cologne,

cigarette smoke and chemicals are well known culprits. Using natural organic shampoos, conditioners and creams will help to minimize your risk of a chemical induced headache. If you wear perfumes or colognes, switch to essential oils for a lovely scent, and ask the people you live with to kindly do the same. Switch to natural cleaning products in the house too, and altogether avoid first and second-hand cigarette smoke. Exercise and Relieve Stress If you suffer from frequent headaches or migraines, you may avoid exercise for fear it will make your headache worse. However, studies show that just the opposite is true. A recent Swedish study published in Headache: the Journal of Head and Face Pain, showed that regular activity can reduce the number of migraines, the intensity of migraines and the need for pain medication. This may be down to the fact that the muscles are being stretched and loosened, or it may be down to stress release. Either way, it seems to make a huge difference. And there is no doubt that one of the greatest causes of headaches is stress. All of us have experienced some type of headache when under pressure, and people who get regular headaches tend to be stress cases. Yoga, 20-30 minutes of meditation and deep abdominal breathing are all great ways to release stress and alleviate a headache. Even if they don’t get rid of the headache completely, they allow one to be calmer and not react to the headache so strongly, which makes it worse. Herbs There are people who find that if they take the herb Feverfew the second they feel a headache coming on, they can hold it at bay. Other herbs that seem to work wonders for some people are Ginger and Gingko Biloba. Ginkgo Biloba reduces the formation of a substance known as plateletactivating factor which may contribute to migraines. Ginger reduces inflammation and is also excellent for the dizziness that often accompanies migraines. Holistic Therapies Acupuncture and acupressure points are known to be effective at relieving mild to moderate headaches and migraines. The most famous point is in the connecting valleys which are located on the webbing between the thumb and forefinger of both hands. Press on this point with moderate pressure for 30-60 seconds on each hand. There are also points on the head, face and at the base of the back of the skull which can relieve a headache. Massage, reflexology EFT and hypnotherapy have also been known to alleviate headaches and migraines. So remember, if you suffer from headaches, there is always an underlying reason. You aren’t genetically programmed to suffer from headaches. I hope this article gives some good starting points on how to relieve the problem while helping with migraines too. Never give up hope. With some dedication, you don’t have to suffer with a throbbing head. Sheryl Walters is a kinesiologist, reflexologist and nutritionist and works in London and Brighton. ABSOLUTE RECIPE

Roasting Hot Sundays... There’s nothing like a roast dinner with all the trimmings. Try this lovely recipe with a zingy twist for a change

Roast Chicken with Lemon and Thyme 3 tablespoons minced fresh thyme 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 5 garlic cloves, chopped 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel 1 7-pound roasting chicken 1 lemon, quartered 1/4 cup dry white wine 1 cup (about) canned low-salt chicken broth 2 teaspoons all purpose flour

Method: Mix the thyme, oil, garlic and lemon peel in a bowl. Prepare the chicken in a roasting pan. Rub all but 1 tablespoon of the above oil mixture on and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place the lemon quarters in cavity of the chicken and tie legs with string. Roast chicken in preheated oven for 20 minutes at 450°F and then reduce temperature to 375°F. Roast the chicken for about 1 hour 15 minutes or until cooked through. Once you have emptied the juices from the cavity of the chicken into a glass jug, transfer it to a serving platter. Tent the chicken with aluminum foil to keep warm. Spoon the fat off the top of the cavity juices. Place the wine in a pan over high heat and bring to the boil, scraping up any browned bits. Pour wine mixture into the pan juices. Add enough chicken broth to cup to measure 1 1/2 cups. Return broth mixture to same roasting pan. Mix flour into the remaining tablespoon garlic-thyme oil and whisk into broth mixture. Boil broth mixture in roasting pan set over 2 burners until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. Season the pan-juice mixture to taste with salt and pepper. Pour into sauceboat. Serve chicken and pan-juice separately.

Spiced Roast Potatoes 5 regular potatoes olive oil salt, pepper thyme, rosemary, paprika

Method: Skin the potatoes and cut them into quarters. Boil them for 8 minutes until soft before scoring them gently with a fork. Meanwhile, heat up a high-sided baking tin containing about 1⁄4 inch of oil. Mix the spices, salt and pepper together in a bowl and generously coat the boiled potatoes in the mixture. Once the oil is warmed, place the coated potatoes in so they are all in contact with the oil. Cook at 300oC for about 20 minutes before turning them and cooking them a further 20 minutes or to taste.

42

Asparagus and Broccoli 1lb broccoli 1lb asparagus 2 teaspoon sugar ground sea salt ground pepper square of butter Method: Boil the Asparagus and Broccoli in separate saucepans and add 1 teaspoon of sugar to each. Boil until both are as soft as desired. Serve in a separate dish and sprinkle all over with the salt and pepper and finally put the square of butter on to melt.

Honey Roast Carrots 500g peeled chantenay carrots 1 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoons honey salt and black pepper, to taste Method: Preheat the oven to 450°:F. Bring salted water to the boil in a pot fitted with a steamer basket. Let carrots steam until just tender, about 5 minutes. Drain, place in a bowl and cover with the oil, honey, salt and pepper. Place the carrots on a baking sheet and cook for 25 minutes. Keep checking to prevent the carrots burning as honey cooks quickly. Serve when slightly browned.

ABSOLUTE RESTAURANT

The art of great dining Rishma Patel finds a relaxing gem on Lewes High Street

O

n a Thursday evening when the weather was unpredictable my sister, Dipti and I were invited to Artisan for dinner. On arrival we were taken aback by how lovely the interior was; with an eclectic mix of contemporary, antique with a touch of glamour thrown in. The décor was beautiful, and the comfortable antique chairs were perfect for drinks. The kitchen is open plan so you can see the Michelin star chefs creating the sumptuous dishes. For a Thursday evening, Artisan was busy but it’s no surprise, as owner Kasia Zinbulska and her team do an amazing job. We were given a warm welcome by Ellie who showed us to the table and offered us some drinks. As we were both driving, we couldn’t sample the extensive wine menu unfortunately. Whilst perusing the menu I notice that the food is a mixture of Polish and British food with a modern twist. The menu is concise, but still has a good variety of dishes, and on Thursdays has strong Spanish influences to coincide with the entertainment for that evening. I opted for the vegetarian tapas (£5.75) and Dipti opted for Polish potato salad (£4.95). While waiting, we enjoyed Santi the Spanish guitarist and a Flamenco dancer who created such a great buzzy atmosphere, it felt like we were in Barcelona! Within no time at all our food arrived, presented beautifully on a rustic wooden platter with olives, feta stuffed baby peppers, roasted mushrooms, goats cheese and crostini and the most delicious roasted potato skins, that were sweet at the first taste then moreishly savoury towards the end. The stuffed baby peppers were delicious with a generous helping of creamy, tangy feta cheese inside; the pepper themselves gave each bite a real kick. I am not a fan of goat’s cheese but this was so mild and velvety it completed the whole dish. The Tapas was very filling but so delicious I had to polish off the lot. I thought to myself this would be a great dish for Sunday lunch during the summer. I couldn’t resist dipping into Dipti’s Polish potato salad, on a bed of baby gem lettuce, cherry vine tomatoes, egg and stuffed peppers. The salad had generous chunks of potato and finely chopped gherkins, in a creamy homemade mayonnaise with a hint of mustard powder to lift the whole dish, whilst the sweet crisp baby gem lettuce cut through the whole dish, cleansing the palate. Another winner in our books!

Kasia and her waitresses are very friendly and attentive to the diners, they are happy to check if you need anything but at the same time they let you enjoy your meal. It’s no wonder that every table in the restaurant was occupied. The smell of lamb came wafting from the kitchen and within no time at all my dish of slow roasted confit lamb shoulder (£11.50) arrived along with Dipti’s choice of Polish vegetarian vegetable rosti (£7.95). I cannot describe the mouth watering smell of my lamb and the taste didn’t disappoint either! Presented delicately on a vibrant green pesto mash, sat the most delicate piece of lamb I had ever tasted. Now when people say it just “melted in my mouth” this really did. The lamb had an exquisite meaty flavour and fell apart at the touch of my fork; this is really how lamb should be cooked.

Artisan likes to take people back to their childhood, by creating apple mousse, or a pudding out of sherbet refreshers... The pesto mash was light and fluffy, without being too overpowering it still held its creamy consistency; the robust sauce of baby onions, bacon and mushroom gave a lovely depth to the dish. Feeling rather gluttonous and ready to burst I couldn’t even manage a taste of Dipti’s dish, but the generous portion of rosti was golden in colour, perfectly seasoned and tender, whilst still being al dente. The oyster mushroom sauce was delicately creamy and tasted magnificent without being too overpowering and heavy. Next time I will be ordering this dish; it certainly scored high in my sister’s ranks. I would have usually said no to dessert after the feast I had just consumed, but they looked lovely especially Lou’s honeycomb cheesecake (£4.95). However, it was time for a breather to make room for this delicious dish. Kasia joined us for a chat; she made us feel so welcome, just like old friends. She was a lawyer previously in London, and soon realised that there was so much more to life, so she turned her passion for art and good food into reality and

Artisan evolved. The motto behind Artisan is good food, quality wine and exceptional art, somewhere to relax and forget your troubles for a few hours. Kasia is certainly ticking all these boxes. Lewis Evans has recently joined Artisan as Head Chef, and is a strong believer in sourcing local produce from trusted suppliers. This is another reason why the food tastes so good. The fish is from Pease Pottage and my lamb came from the butchers down the road. You can’t get much fresher or local than that now can you? Lewis bought our dessert over - Lou’s honey comb cheesecake was exceptional, it was rich and luscious yet still light and fluffy with a crunchy biscuit base and best of all, it wasn’t too sweet. The topping reminded me of the inside of a milky way bar, my perfect pudding I would say. It’s no wonder that this cheesecake has returned to the menu due to popular demand. Artisan change their menu every few months and on set nights they create themed menus. Look out for the ever changing desert menu. Lewis likes to take people back to their childhood, by creating apple mousse, or a pudding out of sherbet refreshers; a lot of innovation and skill goes into creating the dining experience at Artisan. Kasia and her team are doing a tremendous job; delicious food, good quality wine, top class service and entertainment. Artisan is the true gem of Lewes; you must pay a visit, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed…

ABSOLUTE HOTEL REVIEW

Quintessentially English

Verity Craig escapes the rat race and takes a relaxing weekend at the New Forests’ Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa

F

irst impressions can often be correct, and they certainly are at Chewton Glen. Upon entering the lavish driveway of the luxury country hotel and spa, my husband Paul and I immediately knew that we were about to have a wonderful weekend, whiling away the hours in the heart of the New Forest. From the moment of our arrival, it was clear we wouldn’t have to do anything - not even park our car. In reception we were greeted with smiling faces and enthusiasm as if we were their first guests; something that so often is lacking in such long-established busy hotels. Everything was organised, they even checked that our restaurant bookings for the two evenings ahead were confirmed and asked us when we’d like to take our drinks in the main bar area. We were then free to go to our rooms to change for the laborious task of going to use their famous spa and receive our treatments! Being a five star privately owned hotel, when you walk along the ornate corridors and through the public areas, it feels as though you are in someone’s mansion; a typically English one. Wooden beams and beautiful sculptures (that you can buy) surround each individually designed room. Comfy sofas and loungers covered in eclectic textiles and antique leather set off the relaxing vibe that this hotel generates.

“Receiving 3 Rosettes and numerous other awards in The Marryat Restaurant, we knew we were in for a treat”

the treatments take place is a therapeutic place of relaxation and calm - the smells, the music and the staff all add to this. My facial was carried out by Jade, who asked me about my complexion and requirements, and then talked me through the treatment that she recommended for me, and why. It lasted for 55 minutes, and included everything that I always feel my skin needs, but I never have the time to indulge in; a deep facial scrub, hot steam for about five minutes, aromatherapy blends to calm my skin, followed by a gentle neck and shoulder massage. Jade also spent ages looking deeply at my skin under a giant magnifying mirror - thank goodness my husband was in the next room (not something I’d want him to view!) But this gave Jade an even closer look at my skin pre and post the steam, and showed me how attentive she was. My skin was completely pampered. Afterwards, it felt lifted and incredibly clean. All ready for more time in the spa where I met Paul and heard that he was equally happy with his facial; in fact, he said he even fell asleep during his. Having enjoyed every aspect of the spa, we left to get ready for dinner. Receiving 3 Rosettes and numerous other awards in The Marryat Restaurant, we knew we were in for a treat. We weren’t disappointed. Head chef Luke Matthews has been at Chewton Glen since 1993, and he and his development chef Cameron Rutherford take great interest in using local produce and game from the New Forest. Our food was truly delicious with presentation to match.

The room that was to be our abode for the weekend was just as beautifully designed and huge. Though, we agreed the main attraction of this suite was the view from our balcony overlooking the luscious green croquet lawn and woods beyond. We now had a plan for the following day; croquet anyone? Like excited children we quickly slipped into our swim costumes and robes, and dashed down to the spa. The spa at Chewton Glen is one that you can quite happily spend a day or two at; there’s so much to indulge in. There are two swimming pools - one indoor and one outdoor, both heated, and both giving a unique experience. We dipped in and out of both. As well as swimming out in the sunshine, we spent some time relaxing in the hot-tub outside… it’s a hard life! All this was followed by numerous types of whirlpools. And then it was time for our treatments. We were booked in for a relaxation facial each. The dimly-lit area where

ABSOLUTE HOTEL REVIEW “Boasting 130 acres of grounds there is a 9-hole par 3 golf course, a practice range, two indoor and two outdoor tennis courts” The restaurant team are friendly rather than being too formal; again, this carries the homely feel of the hotel throughout. This is not to say that service and food is not of the utmost; the sommelier has a huge knowledge of the wines and spirits, the waiter of the food he is serving from his chefs, and the manager is welcoming and hands-on while running this busy and well-known restaurant. Nothing seems too much effort for these professionals; having enjoyed the extensive cheese trolley, Paul asked our waiter the name of one he particularly enjoyed. Before we knew it, he had written the name down for us and informed us that the chef offered that if we wanted to purchase some to take home, he would be happy for us to do so. It’s these personal touches that give Chewton Glen the renowned name that it has gained the world over (awarded Best Small Hotel In The World 2009). And clearly the current owner thought the same. He and his wife and children were regulars at the hotel for years before they heard it was being sold. And so they made their investment with a view to stopping it being taken over by a corporate company, enabling the passion of it being independently owned to continue. Having been a privately owned hotel since it was built in 1732, Chewton Glen has managed to maintain many of its original features. And although some of the styling inside has been brought up to date, it blends perfectly with the dark wooden surroundings and the views across the traditionally-designed gardens. Boasting 130 acres of grounds there is a 9-hole par 3 golf course, a practice range, two indoor and two outdoor tennis courts, the outdoor swimming pool, the croquet lawn and a putting green. There are also many delightful walking and jogging trails around the grounds, including one to the nearby beach which is given to guests on a map in their rooms. Mountain bikes are also available for guests and an array of country pursuits can be arranged within the grounds, including clay pigeon shooting, archery and kite flying to name a few. There is so much to do at this luxury hotel; all needs are catered for. So with our long weekend flown by, it was time to pack our cases and depart. However, not being able to fit all of the activities in, we decided it would only be right that we return again soon. An English Original Chewton Glen is a Luxury Country House Hotel and Spa, set in 130 acres of Hampshire countryside on the edge of the New Forest National Park and just a few minutes walk from the sea. A very special place Chewton Glen is a member of Relais & Chateaux, and is one of the finest Luxury Hotels in the UK and has been voted ‘Best Small Hotel/Resort Under 100 Rooms in the World 2009’ by The Gallivanters Guide. The unsurpassed heritage of effortlessly gracious English hospitality and the balance between heritage and evolution is what makes Chewton Glen a luxury Country House Hotel and Spa that constantly surprises.

year-round sunshine, while the island boats many sandy beaches and a beautiful coastline of calm, clear waters. As consumers, we tend to demand more of a holiday these days; it isn’t enough to stay in poor quality accommodation just because the price is right. Hence, because of a growing expectation of highquality accommodation, destinations like Malta have recently built top of the range spa hotels, to make our holidays really special.

A telegram from the Queen was among the many congratulations received by Dodo and Harry Treadwell from Southwick who celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary recently. The couple were married at the Parish Church of St Peter’s, Newton- in- Makerfield, Lancashire, and came to live in Sussex shortly afterwards when Mr Treadwell took up a post as the Shoreham and District reporter for the now defunct Sussex Daily News. He later set up a freelance news agency and founded a successful public relations and publishing company. Mrs Treadwell created a unique shop in Shoreham-by-Sea - The Real Thing - which

provided an outlet for the work of many local potters and Sussex craftsmen. Mr Treadwell was a founder member and chairman of Shoreham and Southwick Round Table and later president of Steyning & Adur Valley Rotary Club. He was a member of Pycombe Golf Club. Mrs Treadwell was chairman of Shoreham and Southwick Ladies Circle. Many friends and family members, including their three children and granddaughter, were invited to celebrate at a garden party at the home which the couple designed and built for their retirement in the walled garden of the Manor House at Southwick.

The importance of being Worthing

Beach House Gardens

Worthing has for a long time lived in the shadow of Brighton and some of its more glitzy neighbours. But it is a flourishing town, with facilities and entertainment for all age groups, and a seafront rivalling many on the Mediterranean. Tim Parker takes a mostalgic visit to this hisoric Sussex seaside gem.

W

ell, it can be sunny but what is certain is that there is more to Worthing than meets the eye. It has a splendid esplanade, five miles long with real palm trees, (better than Brighton Marina with its plastic). And there is much more to enjoy than just the esplanade - good restaurants, a pier, shops, parks, a symphony orchestra and all sorts of entertainment. Let me be frank, there is a common misconception that Worthing is dull and flat but nothing could be further from the truth. Take a trip to Cissbury Ring in the Borough of Worthing. The Ring stands high on the Downs, some 184 metres high, and was once the site of one of Britain’s largest Stone Age forts. And it was there on the Downs, thousands of years before the fort, that Worthing’s ancestors, hairy and unshaven, but expert flint makers, ran an export trade to the Mediterranean. Within seven miles of Worthing’s town centre there are no less than four Neolithic flint mines. The mine found at Cissbury is a huge undertaking, over 54

270 pits with some shafts over 20 metres deep. Sadly, there are no records as to who ran the enterprise or what the miners were paid but it was certainly a big business for those days. For many centuries and long after Neolithic man had moved on, Worthing was little more than a fishing hamlet, although it was famous for its mackerel. However, the area was also blessed with good farming land, and when Worthing received its Royal Charter in 1890, the town’s good fortune was recognised in its Coat of Arms, three mackerel and the motto Ex terres copiam e mari salutem - From the land plenty, from the sea health. It was not until the 18th century that Worthing began to grow and began to take the shape of the town we know today. Royal patronage was instrumental in the town’s expansion. The Prince of Wales, busy with his extraordinary palace in Brighton, was the leader of fashion, and his sister, Princess Amelia, was a regular visitor to Worthing. From time to time the Prince of Wales would

stir himself to go and see her, and where the Prince went, society followed. A little later came the fashion for sea cures and Worthing, with its relatively warm climate and calm seas became very popular. By the 19th century, the places to see and be seen were Brighton, Bath, Bognor Regis, Worthing, Cheltenham and Margate. Nowadays Bognor is hardly in the First Division, no longer the playground of the rich and privileged. But then its cause was hardly helped by King George V who when urged by his wife, Queen Mary to take a holiday by the sea in Bognor Regis famously replied, “Bugger Bognor!” Over the years Worthing has recorded the visits of an extraordinary variety of people. Jane Austen, Lord Byron, George Elliot, King Edward, Emperor Haile Selassie, to name but a few. And Oscar Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Ernest while living in Worthing. That’s enough of the past, what is Worthing like today? I decided to see for myself and

ABSOLUTE PLACES The historic Dome Cinema

I urge any of you who have not been to Worthing recently to go before the end of the summer holidays. The flowers in the streets, the hanging baskets and the garden displays are magnificent, they put Brighton to shame. It was not so many years ago that the centre of Brighton had a similar show. “Where have all the flowers gone?” I have asked Brighton Council on more than one occasion. I have had two answers - nobody could be found to water the flowers and moreover the baskets were so heavy there was a danger they might fall on peoples’ heads. Brighton Councillors, I suggest you in particular visit Worthing.

“A little later came the fashion for sea cures and Worthing, with its relatively warm climate and calm seas became very popular. Driving to Worthing earlier this month I went along the seafront road from Brighton past the little clusters of fishing boats on the beach selling fish. Yes, mackerel were on sale. I slowed down to see the price. As I drove past Worthing’s swimming pool into the town centre I saw the banners advertising an International Bowls Tournament in Beach House Park. Why not go along? Bowls is a gentle game but despite

the surface calm, passions run deep and competition is fierce. Oh, and do look at the splendid wrought iron gates when you enter the garden from the sea side. What do the letters ‘G A’ stand for you may ask. Well I can tell you, Gertrude Ashworth the name of my wife’s Headmistress at Warren School. Miss Ashworth has been dead for many years and the school is now closed but both are remembered with affection. There is a thriving and busy shopping centre although the Western end of Montague Street could do with a facelift. But stop for a coffee or a light lunch and you will be delighted by the friendly service and reasonable prices. Occasionally, I go to Worthing to have lunch with my old friend and business partner Brian Hodson (we once had an office in Montague Place, a good position, but the roof leaked). We often lunch at Casa Ciro, where two courses and a glass of wine together with a cheerful and engaging host costs just £6.50. One of the unusual things about Worthing is that for all practical purposes the Council manages much of the local entertainment and so I went to see Janice Fraser, The Town’s Tourism Officer. “The town is growing younger,” she told me, “and so far this year, despite the recession, we are busier than last year.” “I have a friend in Brighton,” I told her, “he came to see the Ken Dodd Show at the Connaught and he didn’t get out of the theatre until after eleven.” “That’s nothing,” replied Janice laughing, “he can go on until after midnight.” Ken Dodd is already booked in for next

season, do book and go along. Or visit one of the other venues the council manages, the Ritz, the Pavilion, the Pier, or the Assembly Hall with its Wurlitzer. That’s a lot of fun. I could go on just as there is lots more that goes on in Sunny Worthing but I’m out of space so I’ll just mention the night club at the end of the Pier, Sofa Restaurant and Bar, and of course, the football team.

Choosing a school Outstanding W feedback ith an education lottery in Brighton & Hove, an increasing number of parents are looking to the independent sector. But many are ‘first time buyers’ and it can be difficult to find the school best suited to your child. No two children are the same, and what is good for one may not be for another. So keep an open mind. Don’t just visit schools because they are the flavour of the month with someone else. That is allowing someone else to choose your child’s school. Choose several very different schools and go to their Open Mornings. Visit a single-sex school, a town and a country school, a school with a small cohort and one with a large cohort. Then sit down with a piece of paper and decide on what are your nonnegotiables, the ingredients that you have decided must be found in the school you are looking for. You have four key considerations: The first concerns single-sex or co-educational. They are very different worlds. My own view is that life is co-educational and education is about preparing children for life. The second key consideration is day or boarding? Many pupils at my own school board despite living within easy commuting distance. Children benefit from being among their friends, enjoying all the facilities of the school campus during the week, but also a proper family weekend. If you want to go for full boarding, check what activities are offered during the weekend. Decision 3 is town or country. Don’t choose somewhere just because it is beautiful. You are not looking for a National Trust property! Many teenagers will relish the space of a great country pile but others will yearn for a cappuccino at Starbucks. Crucially, you must then decide the academic profile to suit your child. League tables – despised by many – can be helpful. Your child must attend a school with others of a similar ability. Otherwise, he or she may be desperately unhappy. Some say bright children do well wherever they go. They don’t. They dumb down to fit in. They adopt a different persona to survive. Your child must feel free to be who he or she is – brains and all. I say aim high. Children want and need to be challenged. We all benefit from playing tennis against someone better than us. Good schools challenge children to achieve the impossible. A high profile, high performing school recruits better teachers than a sleepy school in the sticks. All the swimming pools in the world will not compensate for one brilliant teacher. Above all, you want your child to be happy. For that reason, it is worth putting in the time to investigate all the options. CairnsBanner:Layout is Headmaster of Brighton College. 09:32 BrightonRichard Absolute 7 17/8/09

n outstanding Independent Schools Inspectorate report for Lancing College Preparatory School was delivered to Parents, Governors, and Staff by Head Master, Alan Laurent. Following six years development, expansion, improvement, monitoring and investment at the school, an enthusiastic and proud Alan Laurent said, “This is the culmination of six years work following the 2003 inspection which took place soon after Lancing College took over the running of the school. We are delighted by the inspectors’ findings; it is always gratifying to be complimented on your achievements by your own peers. We will be able to use this report as the springboard for further development and we are always looking to improve the quality of education.” The report stated that Lancing College Preparatory School meets its aims outstandingly well. The report says, “It does this by achieving high quality in every aspect of what it provides. Pupils prosper academically and socially; their personal development is excellent. Teaching is successful because of the way it is focused on the abilities and other needs of pupils.” The inspection was carried out from the 26th to 29th January 2009 where samples of pupils’ work were examined, lessons observed and formal interviews conducted with pupils. Discussions were held with teaching and non teaching staff and with Governors. A sample of the extra-curricular activities that occurred during the inspection period were observed, and registration sessions and assemblies attended. Dr Harry Brunjes, Chair of Governors at Lancing College Preparatory School, was equally delighted by the findings of the report, as was Julie Goldin, Chair of the Parents’ Association, who said, “It is a great privilege to be part of Lancing College Preparatory School and take pride in the accolade of being referenced as outstanding. The report’s findings are clearly an enormous achievement for the school and everyone involved in its development and progression over recent years. We are delighted that the Inspectorate has recognized the excellent partnership the school has with its parents and the wider community. On behalf of the Parents’ Association, well done to everyone who has shared our journey, and let’s keep marching onwards and continue to excel in the future”. ounded over 150 years ago, Hurstpierpoint College is flourishing as never before. Applications and admissions have never been higher and girls and boys at the school now number over 800. The College is continuously improving its facilities on its beautiful country campus and work will be completed this October on a new 15 classroom extension. This will provide new modern foreign languages, mathematics and IT suites for the Senior School, along with discrete classrooms for the upper years in the Prep School. Academic excellence is the bedrock of the Hurst education, not just in its own right, but because it opens the doors to the next stage of pupils’ lives. Hurst also offers ambitious sporting, cultural, intellectual and social programmes, so that pupils develop as rounded, accomplished individuals who will make a real success of their lives after they leave. Hurst also emphasises the importance of developing certain values: a sense of duty, an awareness of right and wrong and a respect for others. So, our pupils are ambitious with a clear sense of purpose and also develop a balanced view of life. They develop into independent and mature individuals, ready for the world that lies ahead of them. Sixth Form students work closely with personal tutors, who monitor academic progress, helping them to meet and surpass expectations. Hurst is proud that, with the help of both tutors and the College’s own UCAS and careers experts, the overwhelming majority of students leave to take up places on courses at their first choice of university. Many students who have studied to GCSE elsewhere choose to join Hurst Sixth Form. They find a warm welcome and quickly become integrated into every aspect of school life, enjoying the many opportunities for intellectual, creative, sporting and outdoor pursuits available on and beyond the College’s wonderful 140 acre, safe country campus. Lower Sixth formers join Senior School houses where they play a key role as leaders, and also have their own social centre. All Upper Sixth students have their own private study in St John’s House, Hurst’s modern co-educational Hall of Residence. Here they share the common pursuit of their final year’s A Level Academic work and cement friendships that can, and do, last a lifetime. www.hppc.co.uk/ 01273 836936.

arrah Fawcett is best known for her appearances in the TV series Charles Angels which was first show in 1976, when she rose to international fame playing private investigator Jill Monroe. She became a pop culture figure, and like Jennifer Aniston more recently, her tumbling hairstyle was emulated by women everywhere, and sales of her iconic poster broke all records. She was arguably the international sex symbol of the 70s and 80s. Before her incredibly rise to fame, she appeared in TV commercials, and had appearances in many American TV series, like I Dream of Jeannie, The Dating Game, and Harry O. She appeared in The Six Million Dollar Man starring Lee Majors, who she married in 1973. The marriage lasted until 1982, and during this time, she was always credited as Farrah FawcettMajors, the name for which she is famous. Since her divorce to Majors, she has been romantically linked for a long time to actor Ryan O’Neal, and they have a son Redmond. After her success in Charlie’s Angels, she tackled many more gruelling parts on the stage, and in film. In 1983, she won critical acclaim for her role in the off-Broadway stage production of William Mastrosimone’s Extremities. She replaced Susan Sarandon in the role of a would-be rape victim who turns the tables on her attacker. Farrah described the role as “the most grueling, the most intense, the most physically demanding and emotionally exhausting” of her career. During one performance of this

controversial play, a stalker in the audience disrupted the show by asking Farrah if she had received the photos and letters he had sent to her. Police removed the man and he was issued with a summons for disorderly conduct. Other challenging roles have included a battered wife in The Burning Bed, Beale Klarsfeld in Nazi Hunter, and Barbara Hutton, the trouble Woolworths heiress in Poor Little Rich Girl. First diagnosed with cancer in 2006, she lost her battle earlier this year. Kate Jackson, a friend and one of her co-stars in Charlie’s Angels, and a cancer survivor, paid tribute: “She was a selfless person who loved her family and friends with all her heart, and what a big heart it was. Farrah showed immense courage and grace throughout her illness and was an inspiration to those around her... I will remember her kindness, her cutting dry wit and, of course, her beautiful smile... when you think of Farrah, remember her smiling because that is exactly how she wanted to be remembered: smiling.”

he highly acclaimed Brighton Art Fair returns to the beautiful Corn Exchange building in the heart of the city. Showcasing over 120 contemporary artists and attracting a capacity audience of just over 5000 visitors, the fair has built a strong reputation for exhibiting exceptional quality artwork in a welcoming, friendly environment. Organised by Jon Tutton and local artist Sarah Young the Brighton Art Fair is promising once again to be a ‘not to be missed’ art event. Jon says “This year we were totally overwhelmed by the number of applicants we had to the fair. The quality and originality of the work was so impressive and we reluctantly had to turn away a large number simply because of limited space. We like to keep the fair on a smaller scale as this adds to the personal and relaxed feel and also means that visitors aren’t too visually over stimulated! Visitors love the variety of the art and feedback in 2008 was fantastic – many saying it was the best year ever! The pressure is really on to produce another top quality fair!’ Painters, printmakers, ceramicists, photographers and sculptors will be exhibiting, chosen in a rigorous and competitive selection process to represent the most exciting and eclectic work across as wide a variety of methods and subjects as possible. This art fair is almost unique in that the artists themselves sell their work direct to the public, bringing a personal feel to viewing and to the buying process. Visitors enjoy meeting the artists - learning about their creative inspirations, techniques and future projects. Brighton Art Fair provides a stress free and informal way to buy art and has introduced many people to purchasing original art for the first time, with many coming back every year to add to their collections. A café provides an area for refreshment and reflection. Tickets are available on the door priced £5 (children under 14 free). Entrance includes an exhibitor catalogue. rt at five, is pleased to present ‘Dreamscapes’, an exhibition showcasing the work of three accomplished artists; Nick Vivian, Kim Anderson & Yvonne Coomber. Running from the 5th-20th of September, the show captures the magic and enchantment of the natural world through real and imagined spaces. Nick Vivian, a prominent London artist paints in a kaleidoscope of vibrant colours. Inspired by nature and intrigued by the fluctuating effects of light his painting are infused with serenity and a sense of mystery. His captivating woodland scenes capture fleeting moments of dappled sunlight and misty mornings, as if recollections from a dream. Kim Anderson, a Brighton based fresh talent, will be exhibiting for the first time at the gallery. Her evocative and sensual abstracts echo the transience of nature, reflecting its ever changeable moods. Subtle hues are layered in a synthesis of texture and colour, reminiscent of traces in time. Acclaimed artist Yvonne Coomber’s sparkling florals explode with a myriad of colour. Her paintings embrace the intense beauty of nature and reflect her deep passion and connection with the earth. Inspired by the untamed countryside of Devon, her landscapes emanate pure joy and childlike wonder. Enhanced by glitter and gold leaf her paintings dance with the light and invite the viewer into a magical wonderland. “We are very excited to introduce two new talents, Nick Vivian and Kim Anderson, as well as featuring gallery favourite Yvonne Coomber in our latest exhibition,” gallery owner Paola Calise comments, “Through a labyrinth of colour these three artists create a unique vision of the world, offering a space to dream and escape into” Dreamscapes is a free exhibition that will run from 5th – 20th September 2009 at Art at Five Gallery, 5 Bartholomews, Brighton, BN1 1HG. ar Stories tells the story of the home front in Brighton and Hove during the Second World War, using photographs from the archive of the Brighton Herald newspaper. The images remind us of many aspects of wartime experience, including air raid precautions, evacuees, bomb damage, funding drives, troop parades and victory celebrations. The exhibition also includes extracts from the Herald newspaper, such as news reports, editorial comments and readers’ letters. These help tell the stories behind the events and characters portrayed in the photographs. Sometimes dramatic, but often mundane, these show that local experiences of the war were often more complex and ambiguous than the photographs suggest. SHEER LUXURY

The new Porsche Panamera Grand Turismo

T

he Porsche Panamera Gran Turismo, which goes on sale from 12 September, will be available with powerful and efficient V8 power units, the choice of rear or four-wheel drive, and an interior design with a distinctively luxurious and high technology ambience. The four door Porsche Panamera represents a unique symbiosis of sporting performance and sheer luxury. Every model offers a full leather interior, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Bi-Xenon headlights, rear ParkAssist, tyre pressure monitoring, automatic dimming rear view mirrors, Porsche Communication Management with touch-screen satellite navigation and audio controls, and a Bluetooth telephone module – complete with cordless handset for use by rear seat passengers. The rear-wheel drive Porsche Panamera S is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox. The seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch transmission is available as an option. The Panamera 4S and Turbo have fourwheel drive and feature the PDK gearbox as standard. The active all-wheel drive system is controlled by Porsche Traction Management (PTM) via a multi-plate clutch that adjusts the engine power distribution between the front and rear axles for increased grip and agility. Standard on all Panamera models is the ‘Sport’ button, which increases throttle pedal responsiveness, selects the ‘Sport’ suspension setting on the PASM, and the shift patterns of the PDK transmission, where fitted. Offered in combination with PDK is the new Porsche Auto Start/Stop function. This automatically switches off and restarts the engine when stationary to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions – for example, at traffic lights or in congestion.

66

The Panamera S and 4S have 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, with a choice of 19-inch and 20-inch alternatives available. The Panamera Turbo rides on 19-inch alloy wheels. As is typical of a Porsche, the braking system of the Panamera is designed to deliver a high level of stopping power. However, similar to all other Porsche models, the race-proven and highly efficient Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) option is also offered for the Panamera. Additional features on the Panamera Turbo include PASM with an adaptive air suspension function that actively adjusts the ride height, BOSE® Surround Sound audio system with 14 speakers, metallic paint, multi-function steering wheel, heated rear seats and rear side airbags. Also, the 14-way electric front seat adjustment has a Comfort Memory Package for the various seat positions and the electrically adjustable steering column. The Panamera offers comprehensive levels of active and passive safety across the range. In addition to Porsche Stability Management (PSM), there are driver and front passenger airbags, curtain airbags as well as – on the front seats – side and knee airbags, each ensuring maximum protection as standard features in the event of an accident. Rear seat side airbags are available as an option on the Panamera S and 4S. A luxurious journey is guaranteed in any of the four seats in the Panamera but, for passengers in the rear, the option of electrically adjustable backrests, cushion length and lumbar support raises the standard further still. It is also possible to specify rear seat ventilation, and a comprehensive rear interior illumination package with high power reading lights.

For customers seeking the ultimate in-car audio experience, the Panamera is the first Porsche to offer the option of a High-End Surround Sound System from Burmester®, the renowned Berlin audio specialist. A total of 16 loudspeakers masterminded by 16 amplifier channels with an overall output of more than 1,000 Watts provide a unique sound, complemented by an active subwoofer together with a 300 W Class D amplifier. The superior, yet practical, driving qualities of the Panamera are borne out clearly by the luggage compartment. Opening the rear lid reveals a load capacity of 445 litres (15.6 cu ft) in the Panamera S and 4S. Maximum stowage in the Panamera Turbo is 432 litres or (15.1 cu ft). With the rear seat back rests folded, luggage capacity in all models increases to an ample 1,250 litres or 43.8 cu ft. The Panamera Gran Turismo will be priced from: Panamera S £72,266 (inc VAT) Panamera 4S £77,269 (inc VAT) Panamera Turbo £95,298 (inc VAT) Every Panamera has the assurance of a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the new Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone. For more information regarding the new Panamera models, please contact Porsche Centre Mid-Sussex on 01444 318170 or visit www.porsche.co.uk/midsussex.

ou should be encouraged that there is some movement in the property market; that the chain reaction is positively inevitable in commerce and that the scarcity mindset is at last beginning to thaw. But if your business is anything like mine, then the chances are that you have spent the last couple of quarters proactively marketing to your prospects’, possibly spent a small fortune on mailers’ and in all likelihood got a stack of neglected paperwork needing your attention? So now that new business is in the pipeline for you and you can finally enjoy breathing easier I cannot reiterate enough that your administrational procedures really do need your attention if you are to thrive in this recession. (Perhaps I’m compelled to write this piece too, because my IT expert informs me that lost data is the second biggest reason that businesses fail.) Having found out for instance that a database six months’ old is on average, forty percent obsolete and that Clare my trusted PA really does need a holiday and frankly I’m too busy wooing the

sales doors to close, to give the administration a second thought, I was delighted to appoint Let Me Do That For You to support my business. Former Sales Manager Lisa Reynolds has not only been able to build me a bespoke database for the fraction of the cost (and it’s current data because as part of the service I chose the sectors), she has dissolved all my administrational worries by organising my office and can support my business while Clare enjoys sunny times in Tunisia! So if you want to feel as sharp as I do and benefit from only concentrating on looking after your customers, then I really do suggest that you give Lisa Reynolds a call on 01273 748733. Privet equity Liam Russell discusses your guide to garden development

Y

our garden has the potential to earn you a good tax free return. Last month we discussed permitted development rights and to follow Liam Russell Architects will explain the basic steps in carrying out a ‘back-land’ development. Our advice is always to first consider every factor that can affect the potential of your ‘site’. These range from conservation issues to potentially obscure and obstructive covenants. Local authorities now request this information in a raft of reports and check-lists which must be completed before information can be submitted. Once you (and your architect) have made a successful assessment you will then need to seriously consider the potential affect on your own outlook. This encompasses both the physical and emotional: you may not wish to see your own garden dug up, no matter how much you want to benefit from the profits. Decide early as this will affect the way the proposals develop. We have seen a number of clients deciding to move into the proposed developments, forgoing rose bushes for contemporary new homes. As the project develops you will need to work with

B0909_71 Liam article SEPT09.ind1 1

your architect to create an exciting proposal that will strengthen your planning application. Do not pre-suppose your audience’s tastes: we have proven how open-minded an involved public can be. This will afford you more space, more building and more opportunity with carefully conceived design. Involve the public. Proper pre-planning application advice is essential. This is now a feature of all application forms.Your architect will advise that you talk with all of your neighbours in a 360 degree radius. Often the public simply request that they are given the respect of a face-to-face appraisal of what you are proposing. Take note of any meeting attendance and ask for their support. Hiding from any potential criticism at this stage is not advisable. The next step is to have your architect discuss your proposals with the local authority. Depending on the complexity of the scheme the architect may wish to involve a planning consultant. This stage is about listening to the planning department, who are interpreting central government policy with the added complication of local political pressures. Moving on, you have to evaluate whether to

construct or sell the land with the benefit of the permission. Either way being decisive is essential. Active investors fair much better than those who are passive. Assuming most will sell, the ‘product’ needs to reach market as quickly and efficiently as possible. In a recent project our client, some homeowners, invested part of their garden and a few thousand on fees. They made a nett profit of £160K – it is surely worth a closer look. • Take advice • Make sure you undertake a complete analysis of the site, the services and any legal covenants • Do not scrimp on the design and be sustainable • Submit thorough supporting information • Talk to your neighbours and your Local Authority

Staying put? Oliver Maxwell-Jones of Woolley Bevis Diplock LLP discusses the right to manage

I

f the credit crunch and the fall in property prices mean that you are remaining longer in your flat (and you hold a long lease of it) there are a couple of things you can consider which may, in the long term, improve your flat’s value. Collectively, a majority of leaseholders have the right to either (i) manage the building containing their flats or alternatively (ii) they can buy the freehold from their landlord (a process known as collective enfranchisement). In both cases your flat must be in a self contained building; at least 50% of the leaseholders in the building must take part, no more that 25% of the building can be commercial space, your lease must have originally been granted for a term longer than 21 years (‘a qualifying tenancy’) and at least two thirds of all the flats must be let on a qualifying tenancy. The right to manage enables leaseholders to take over the management of the building, so

B0909_072 Woolley Bevis.indd 1

you get to choose which managing agents are employed and control the building’s services and maintenance. It is also an effective way of dealing with an absent landlord or ineffective management. The right is exercised on notice and providing all the qualifications are met, the landlord cannot refuse. Buying the freehold to the building achieves the same ends as a right to manage claim, but with added benefits. Not only do you realise the benefits of owning a share of the freehold to your building but you also secure the long term investment in your home. Inevitably though, buying your freehold will cost more than a right to manage claim as agreement has to be reached with your landlord over price. However, what is less commonly understood is that the valuation provisions in the current legislation are in your favour. Because of the recent falls in property values the amount to pay for the freehold is likely to be substantially less

than would have been paid when prices were at their highest. This is even more the case where the leases in the building have more than 80 years left until they run out. One word of caution, this is a general summary of a highly complex area of law and there are various exclusions and special provisions. You should always take specialist advice on your particular circumstances before taking any action. Without doubt you will need expert guidance from a solicitor, a valuer and a managing agent to reach your desired goal. ABSOLUTE FINANCIAL ISSUES

SME Risk Management

T

his is a part of a series of articles looking at risk management issues for small to medium enterprises (SMEs). Firstly, I want to address the need for all enterprises to have a Business Continuity Management strategy and recovery plan. This is historically called a ‘Disaster Recovery Plan’ – however, in my opinion, this creates the wrong mind-set as business owners / management react by saying ‘it will never happen to me!’ Of course ‘disasters’ such as a major fire or flood are rare but they do happen and, without a workable recovery plan linked with adequate insurance, they can put you out of business permanently. However, much more common are IT, telecoms, power failures and a variety of other ‘incidents’ that can last several working days or longer. Such ‘incidents’ can also cause significant business interruption and have a direct / indirect revenue impact and, if not managed properly, they can rapidly escalate into a ‘disaster’. It is very likely that a company will, at some point, suffer disruption from an event that is outside of its control. Having an effective Business Continuity Management process in place will lessen the effect of such an event, and will enable the company to more quickly recover and continue trading profitably. What is Business Continuity Management (BCM)?

Why invest in Business Continuity Management? Roger Clifton-Moore explains. BCM is about identifying, and where appropriate, reducing your internal and external business risks and exposures and implementing an effective business continuity strategy and associated recovery plans. There are four main phases to implementing an effective BCM strategy: Risk & Business Impact Assessment Recovery Strategy Development Plan Development & Implementation Change Control – strategy / plan review, testing &maintenance The Risk & Business Impact Assessment phase is an essential first step in the process as it will define the scope of the subsequent phases. It has two primary objectives: Firstly, it will help you to fully assess the ‘threats and exposures’ that your business faces both internally (business processes / IT & Office infrastructure) and externally (supply chain / outsourcers / service providers). For example, a very important risk issue that all companies, irrespective of their size, need to address is the protection of their company data i.e. security, confidentiality and particularly backup and recovery. In my experience of over seventeen years in conducting risk assessments, this is the area where companies are often most exposed. It is always a surprise to management when the difference between

‘what they think happens and what actually happens’ is revealed! Secondly, by understanding your risks you can then properly assess the financial and consequential business impact of not being able to function for a ‘day’, a ‘week’ or a ‘month’ or ‘longer’. You can then objectively decide what level of resources you wish to allocate to risk reduction and the development of a Business Continuity Management strategy and plan. The Risk & Business Impact Assessment phase is best conducted with the help of an experienced third party who can conduct an objective review of all your business and IT functions. This article has hopefully given you some insight into Business Continuity Management. The next article will look in more depth at recovery strategy options and plan development considerations. We are a Sussex based company. If you would like further information about the services we can offer or would like a copy of our BCM risk checklist do email or contact me. ABSOLUTE ARCHITECTURE

A VISION FOR BRIGHTON & HOVE Robert Stuart Németh discusses what he would expect from a directly-elected mayor in the area of the built environment LEADERSHIP When English Democrat Peter Davies was elected Mayor of Doncaster in June, he reduced his salary from £73,000 to £30,000 and the number of councillors by two-thirds. Sweeping actions which cut through waste and bureaucracy are common when a single individual is responsible for a city. By mayors, I’m talking about those elected by the people directly. Brighton & Hove has a wonderful ceremonial mayor in Cllr Ann Norman who chairs council meetings and performs a huge number of civic functions. But a directly-elected mayor is an accountable leader with the power often equivalent to that of a council’s decision-making cabinet. Twelve areas in England now have directly-elected mayors but the people of Brighton & Hove rejected the idea in 2001 (37,214 against beat 22,724 for) with a 32% turnout. Personalities play a huge part in such referenda so perhaps it was a vote against those who were thought to be in the running for the job. Given that strong message, it’s unlikely that we will get a directly-elected system in Brighton & Hove by local vote. The current thinking in Westminster from both major parties suggests that the decision is more likely to be taken above and imposed upon us. Either

way, I believe that it’s inevitable – and for the best. In Hartlepool, the first mayor to be elected was a man in a monkey suit who promised free bananas for school kids. It’s funny but a waste of time for all. If you give people a meaningful vote with consequences which impact upon their lives, more effort eventually goes into picking the best candidate. Giving local politicians proper powers would give voters a proper stake in the process – it would be in their interests to vote for the best person. So what would I be looking for in a directly-elected mayor locally? A voluntary salary cut, as carried out by Davies in Doncaster, would be a must. It would be impossible to cut waste elsewhere if a mayor didn’t start with their own wage. My principal interest is the built environment and it would be here that I would expect real vision. Getting the major projects going such as Brighton Marina is hugely important but small details are vital too. Estate agents’ boards and satellite dishes in Conservation Areas should come under the microscope. The planning requirement for those wishing to turn buildings with several flats, back into houses should go but more should be done to incentivise those

with spare rooms to rent them out. Unlike Davies in Doncaster, I wouldn’t reduce the number of councillors. Two or three councillors represent each ward currently. I would have just one per ward but more, smaller, wards. The new boundaries would be more relevant than the current ones and would reflect better Conservation Areas and historic parishes. This would increase accountability and strengthen local communities.

Brighton & Hove has a wonderful ceremonial mayor in Cllr Ann Norman who chairs council meetings and performs a huge number of civic functions It may well be the case that a local equivalent of New York’s Rudolph Giuliani emerges; somebody not afraid to take on Brighton’s drug dealers, burglars, and lager louts. Now’s not the time for monkey business. Robert Stuart Németh Researcher to Michael Gove MP robert@buildingopinions.com ABSOLUTE
