or the last seven years, the Tobago Jazz Experience has been one of the most anticipated events in the country. Persons from all over the world, visit Tobago for a chance to be awakened by the smooth jazz rhythms. The entire island begins to buzz with excitement and exhilaration in preparation for the event. Hotel rooms and car rentals are booked months in advance and the streets are lined with posters detailing the information of the upcoming event. It also provides the ultimate opportunity for Tobagonians to showcase their country to tourists, which they do with pride. Secretary of Tourism and Transportation, Tracy DavidsonCelestine said that she was excited by the quality of acts planned for the week of activities and said that the Division wants to build on the success it had with the headline act John Legend at Tobago Jazz Experience 2014. “The Division of Tourism and Transportation continues to invest in this project because it has the effect of benefitting ordinary Tobagonians. The Hotels, Guests’ Houses and Bed and Breakfast properties are all full during this time. This means waiters, taxi drivers, street food vendors, bar owners are just a few who benefit from the Tobago Jazz Experience,” Mrs. DavidsonCelestine said. According to the festival’s website, the entire event is organized in such a way that it offers much more than music but also highlights the rich culture of Tobago. “The Tobago Jazz Experience incorporates the cultural and historical practices that define the island of Tobago as an ideal destination.” This year’s line up of performers includes Grammy award winners Miguel (24th Apr), Jill Scott (26th Apr), Funk and Disco Band, Kool & the Gang (26th Apr) and American idol finalist, Jennifer Hudson (24th Apr). In addition to the international performances, local and regional talent will also be included in this year’s event.

Roman Virgo, Adana and Oscar B will be performing on first night of the festival (18th Apr). The following day, patrons can expect performances from David Rudder, Kes the Band and Shurwayne Winchester. Between the 23rd and 26th April performances by Olatunji, Machel Montano, Busy Signal, Mastermindz, Fya Empress and Keba can also be expected. However the major surprise thus far, may have been when the organizers announced that both Hudson and Miguel would be performing on the same night. Comments on the event’s Facebook page surfaced shortly after the announcement was made. One fan commented “Miguel & Jennifer for the same night ....I thought they

would of split them up between Friday & Sunday.” No response from the planners was given. The announcement of Miguel’s performance was made on the 23rd January on the festival’s Facebook page and was met with both excitement and uncertainty by some. Comments such as “does this guy have more than one hit” “don't know him. ...sorry” “never hear of him either - will now 'Google his name” and “Pardon my ignorance but wt#% is Miguel” were published. However on the flip side, some expressed their excitement by the addition to the performance list by commenting; “Omgggggg”, “this line up is phenomenal” and Yessssssssssssssssssssssss. For many of you who are unfamiliar with who Miguel is, here’s

a little background information. Miguel Jontel Pimentel, who performs under the name Miguel, is an American recording artist, singer, songwriter and producer. Signed to Jive Records in 2007, Miguel released his debut album, All I Want Is You, in November 2010. He identifies himself as part of the new wave of R&B artists that includes Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, and Elle Varner and many characterize his music as "eclectic, artsy R&Bpop. Musicians such as Prince, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Freddie Mercury, Phil Collins, Donny Hathaway, The Notorious B.I.G. and Kanye West are just some of his influencers. In addition to singing, he also plays the guitar. Will you be attending this year’s festival? Head over to our Facebook page (ET&T Weekly) and let us know!

he sister isle is often overshadowed when it comes to the local entertainment landscape. That is not to say that Tobago doesn’t have its share of worthy entertainment options. For instance, the Tobago Jazz Experience is possibly the largest local event outside of the carnival period. Not to mention, the Heritage and Blue Food festivals are quite a draw as well. However, those are staple events that are often planned for long in advance. Occasionally, there are events that take place outside of the norm that have the potential to really turn heads. One such event is entitled Island Dream #RELEASE. Described by promoters as “The ultimate island experience,” the April 4th concert is carded to

CONCERT SERIES STOKES UP NEW FIRE IN ENTERTAINMENT

riven by his definite aspiration to give local artists a forum to perform in Trinidad and Tobago and the audience a chance to experience live local artistic talent, Gerry Anthony, who is also a music maker, the leader and voice in the band, West Indian Rhythm Konnection (WIRK), started the NEW FIRE concert series. NEW FIRE speaks for itself; it is a growing concert series, which features the best of Trinidad and Tobago’s diverse, progressive, music culture. It has been growing in popularity since it began in January 2014. One Thursday of every month, the stage at D Nu Pub, formerly Mas Camp Pub, Corner of French Street and Ariapita Avenue, is filled with the interaction between the audience and the performer, creating a live musical experience. “Choosing this pub means a lot because it has a lot of history and some of the greatest local talents performed at the Pub, so New Fire is creating and sustaining 2

an artistic revolution to the Pub,” Anthony explains. “After realizing that there was a limited forum for some of the best musically talented artists in Trinidad and Tobago, who are also being denied a chance to perform at concerts locally, I decided to give the country an opportunity to experience local artistic talents,” said Anthony, as he explains his reason for starting the NEW FIRE concert series. Being a nonprofit enterprise,

NEW FIRE collaborates with other organizers and events, such as the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival (TTFF), the Trinidad and Tobago Literary Festival ‘Bocas Lit Festival’ and others, to develop a forum for progressive artists to showcase their talent. The diverse music culture in Trinidad and Tobago allowed NEW FIRE to showcase Reggae, Hip Hop, Poetry, Spoken Word and Rap music. Some of the performers who graced the stage at previous shows were Orange Sky, Freetown Collective, Mistah Shak, Gillian Moore and her band ‘Bush Tea Party’, Marge Blackman and others. NEW FIRE plans to do a Jazz series soon. The challenges NEW FIRE faces to compete with other parties and in attracting a younger generation to listen to live band performances do not stop the showcase of local music. NEW FIRE uses Facebook, Instagram, posters and YouTube, as some of the marketing strategies used for

this initiative. “Being a nonprofit enterprise, social media is used as the main avenue to advertise the upcoming shows and maintain visibility”, said Anthony. With the aim to develop a sustainable robust music culture and inspire people with a new experience, Anthony describes the experience thus far, “It’s a life changing, tremendous learning and growing experience, there are challenges, but despite that it is a joy to do this”. After celebrating the first anniversary on February 5th 2015, with the theme CANBOULAY, New Fire concert series continues to showcase local talents. On Thursday March 26th 2015, adding to the list of performers are the enchanting sounds of BUZZROCK and the conscious vibrations of MYSTIC ELEMENTS featuring Kushite and Black Loyalty with the theme FIRE, GOLD and GREEN. Look for New Fire World on Facebook or follow their YouTube channel for more.

The event was an unveiling of the recently rebranded and retooled program which saw Republic Bank lend support as the platinum sponsor. Decibel takes place over the course of three days beginning on April 30th with two days of conferences and workshops focused on film, music, fashion and dance. their fields. Co-sponsor Blink-Bmobile went to great lengths at the launch to tout their feature addition to the Expo. There is carded to be a “Zombie Island” theme park, which will incorporate local hair, makeup, lighting, sound and artistic design talents into the ultimate ‘haunted house’ experience. Apart from the actual event, the main focus of the launch seemed to be the promotion of Decibel’s Dream Big initiative which saw music producer Kasey Phillips and filmmaker Oliver Milne walk away with grants. Phillips is a celebrated local producer who has done the musical backdrops for songs like Machel’s “Endless Wuk,” and the “Antilles Riddim” among many others. The soft-spoken

artist will receive $20,000 and an internship at famed LA-based recording studio the Boom Boom Room. Milne is an Addy award winner who has worked with the likes of Jim Hanks and Transformers star Shia La Boeuf. He will receive $30,000 towards creating a short-film and he will be hosted by Overbrook Entertainment in Hollywood where he will walk the red carpet at the premier of Will Smith’s movie ”Concussion.” These initiatives, as well as the plans for the conference were revealed by a panel including host Jason Williams, Question Mark Entertainment CEO, Simon Baptiste, Republic Bank Marketing Manager Lisa McCarthy and TSTT’s Chief Marketing Officer, Camille Campbell.

Bachew first started hosting youth gospel concerts in 2002, little did he expect that those concerts would escalate into such an event. Some 200 youths would gather in the small village of St. Helena, for the common purpose of having a good time in the presence of the Lord. The warmth, friendliness and wisdom of the Bachew family have always been integral elements in the nurturing of Open House. Within a few years, Open House exploded into what it now is, “a spectacle of growing proportion!" This year's Open House is carded for three nights, from April 10th to 12th. The Trinidad and Tobago Urban Ministries compound in St. Helena Village, Piarco continues to be the home ground for the event. It kicks off promptly at 6pm each evening with over 20 of the finest local gospel artistes expected to grace the stage. Positive, J Prince, Nehilet Blackman & D’All Girls Band, Curtis Jor-

Open House retains the element of surprise, as some of the patrons would be walking away with iPhones, laptops and cameras, hint, hint, hint. Open House is absolutely free of charge. According to event coordinator, Rebekah Fuentes, this is their way of giving back to the youth of Trinidad and Tobago. This year’s theme is “Be Transformed”, and all are invited to attend this experience of a life time.

LOCAL CARIBBEAN FILM MART AND FILM NEWS DATABASE TO LAUNCH IN SEPTEMBER

T

he Caribbean Film Mart and Caribbean Film Database will be launched this September during the 10th annual trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff), which takes place from the 15-29 September 2015. The project is co-financed by the ACP Cultures+ Programme, funded by the European Union (European Development Fund) and implemented by the ACP Group of States. According to Emilie Upczak, ttff’s Creative Director: “The Mart is poised to introduce the unique voices and aesthetic of Caribbean film and filmmakers to the international film industry, through four days of meetings, presentations, and networking events. International producers, sales agents and film funds will meet one-on-one with filmmakers who will have opportunities to forge partnerships that could lead to the successful funding and distribution of their films.” The Caribbean Film Mart’s call for projects will open on March 23 and close on May 4, 2015. Project applicants (producers or directors), must be Caribbean citizens/residents or international filmmakers living and working in the Caribbean, and the projects must be narrative features or creative documentaries that will be made in the Caribbean. In addition to the Caribbean Film Mart, the ttff will also unveil the Caribbean Film Database—a website of feature-length independent Caribbean Narrative, Documentary and Experimental feature films from 2000 to the present. The Database will also include a select number of Caribbean classics, contain a bibliography of film resources, a Caribbean Women in Film page and links to other film festivals, film commissions and schools in the region. “We wanted to create an online resource that was easily accessible, well-organised and reflected the visual palette of the Caribbean film 6

movement. This resource will allow filmmakers in the region to more easily collaborate, will give audiences greater ability to access films and filmmakers from the region, and provide the international industry with a one-stop shop for Caribbean film,” said the ttff’s Art Director, Melanie Archer, who is coordinating the Caribbean Film Database. In an effort to spread the word about the two initiatives and to select the 30 participating industry guests, the ttff team has been travelling to key international film festivals and markets, including Sundance and Slamdance in the US, Rotterdam and Berlin in Europe, and Guadalajara in Mexico. In the last few weeks, the ttff attended two regional festivals—Festival

Régional et International du Cinéma de Guadeloupe (FEMI), an associate partner on the project, and the Curaçao International Film Festival Rotterdam (CIFFR). These interventions are intended to engage the regional industry and to use an inclusive approach to the development of the two projects. The ttff’s External Relations Director Nneka Luke attended FEMI to participate on a panel in the Film Market on March 14, and gave a presentation to FEMI’s industry guests on March 16; she will also promote the Caribbean Film Mart call. The films Art Connect, Dubois and Pan: Our Music Odyssey, which all premiered at the ttff 2014, are

also official selections at FEMI this year. The ttff’s Programme Director, Annabelle Alcazar, will attend CIFFR to work with the Curaçao team to finalise the Dutch-language films that will be included in the Caribbean Film Database, and to promote the Caribbean Film Mart call. The Caribbean Film Mart and Caribbean Film Database are being implemented in association with the Fundación Global Democracia y Dessarollo from the Dominican Republic, the Association for the Development of Art Cinema and Practice in Guadeloupe, the Foundation of New Latin American Cinema from Cuba, and the Festival Régional et International du Cinéma de Guadeloupe.

Celebrities are joining the boycott against Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana after the duo gave an explosive interview to Italian magazine Panorama, in which they called babies born via IVF “chemical offspring.” Considering so many celebrities have turned to IVF to conceive, (including Nicole Kidman, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion), we aren’t surprised by the backlash the designers are facing from the Hollywood set. Elton John was the first to speak out against the shocking comments — and it didn’t take long for celebrities to support the singer, taking to Twitter with the hashtag #BoycottDolceGabbana. Elton John spoke out regarding the comments on Instagram. “How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic’?” John – whose two sons, Zachary and Elijah, with husband David Furnish were conceived through IVF treatment

– wrote on Instagram. “And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfill their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana.” After Elton expressed his outrage is wasn’t long before celebs began to publicly support the singer. Victoria Beckham took to Twitter to speak out regarding the controversy and used Elton’s original hashtag, #BoycottDolceGabbana, with the message: “Sending love to Elton David Zachary, Elijah & all the beautiful IVF babies.” Courtney Love also was quick to react to the news. “Just round up all my Dolce & Gabbana pieces, I want to burn them. I’m just beyond words and emotions. Boycott senseless bigotry! #boycottD&G.”

BEAUTY SETTING THE RIGHT FOUNDATION FOR YOUR FOUNDATION W

MAKEUP KIT CONSTRUCTION FOR BEGINNERS as a proper blush brush to give you that soft glow. This brush can also be used for blending and bronzing.

ell look at you! You’re all grown up with your push up bra, taking that bold step into makeup land. This is hardly ever the case though as most girls have been messing around with their mother’s or sister’s make up long before they are of age to get their own. Then there is the group of gals who have never had a single thought or care in the world for face paint, often the tomboys. Whichever route brought you to this door we say welcome. Now you should know that cosmetics and this business of beauty is a multi-million dollar a year industry so understand that those ads that run every 4 minutes on the tele aren’t necessarily your friend. Talk to friends and get suggestions for quality buys. Beginner or pro, there are standards for every makeup kit. The kit will consist of all the basics you need for a quick makeup job. Your kit can contain as little as six products or a bit more but try not to move your entire bedroom dresser of products into your purse, even though the sheer size of our purses these days might very well make the feat possible. The kit can consist of items ranging from cosmetics, to skin care to application tools. You decide the contents based on your personal requirements.

A round-tip eye shadow blending brush – you can get a demonstration done at the counter on this or even on YouTube. Go medium sized for range. A soft flat-tip eye shadow brush – use to line the lash lines or the eyebrows. A lip brush - especially handy for tubes of lip-gloss and lipstick palettes, but also great to use for regular lipsticks. Cotton tips - It’s like baby wipes, which I’m sure you always have on hand, you just never know.

What you should have: Moisturizer Concealer Pressed powder Eye shadow Eyeliner Mascara Eyebrow pencil Blush Lip-gloss. There are basic kits that may just include lip-gloss; eyeliner and mascara as an option to a travel make up kit or an essential night out kit. Then there are the tools. Do you use a brush or a sponge or a powder puff? There are so many brushes, what do you do with this huge one? Actually you can get

away with using nothing but your fingers to get the job done but let’s go ahead and assume you’re heading somewhere and would rather not show up with purple tips. Here are some of the things you will need for application; make room in the makeup bag (it’s now gone from a ‘kit’ to a ‘bag’)

16 ET&T • MARCH, 2015 • www.amgtt.com

The powder brush - get one that is large, round and soft. Remember to tap off any excess powder for a sheerer, more natural look. The blusher brush - the little finicky brush that comes with your blush will never be as good

It’s worth investing in good quality brushes and you need not get them all at once. You can also get a nice, big mirror that you hide in the car so no one knows your extremes of vanity. Some cosmetic companies sell readymade makeup kits which can reduce the cost but beware of inferior products and 2-use brushes. With all this you will definitely need a reliable bag. One with lots of sections and hidden compartments is ideal. Consider those that have hardened, flat standing or laying support to maintain order and avoid spills and cracked powder… totally hate that. If you’re going to school… why are you reading this? But ok you’re rebellious; really if you are in school, some concealer and lipgloss is all you need. Hey the guys there are supposed to be smart – the good ones won’t care about your make up. For the rest of us, make up is a mere addendum to add a bit of shimmer to the outside look but remember, what we put inside is just as important. So for every brush and coloured eye shadow in the bag, how about replacing French fries with fruit and trading the soda for water?

ET&T: What advice can you offer to budding entrepreneurs out there in T&T? JC: My advice is to firstly have a plan and a strategy. Do research prior to getting involved in your particular field or industry. Be professional in your business dealings. Be honest and keep your word… always keep focused on the goals and targets you set for yourself and your company.

ji were all part of an A-list lineup that turned up for Bacchanal Sunday. The event which was normally known as Mania was given a slight rebrand as it headed to the Fatima College Grounds. There were drinks inclusive and all inclusive platinum sections available to patrons and they snapped them up without second guessing as the event drew a large crowd. ET&T was part of the crowd at the venue for the action.

UV VIBE

ier 1 was the spot where UV Vibe went down. The exciting P event was one of the parties that rounded up the carnival and gave the fete-thirsty a final chance to jam before the big

parade. The drinks inclusive featured a nice blend of entertainment options for the excited patrons. Most of them left the party truly fulfilled and ready for the road. Some of them even wondered if they partied too hard at the party and if it would affect their road-worthiness. All in all, it was an enjoyable precursor to the bigger version of the shindig in July.

BRUH…

he term used in the title is one that blew up on social media T and usually accompanies some sort of misfortune. Slip off a treadmill… “Bruh”… fall fully clothed into a pool… “Bruh.” Get dressed in the dark… You get the picture.

The hair, the weave and the gold tell stories by themselves. However, it is particularly disturbing to see the powder-chested female on the left. I guess she powdered up to absorb the extra moisture at the water party she was attending. Bruh…

She is holding two drinks in her hand, but she must have had at least five before she decided to get dressed. By the way, we are using the term “dressed” loosely. She just threw on a bunch of stuff and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, ‘the best’ wanted nothing to do with her plan. Brown leather Uggs with black star-patterned stockings, a pink skirt, black vest and (too small) lace-finished jacket were combined. Bruh…
