The Fort Bend County Museum Association Presents 28th Annual Lone Star Stomp

The “flower power” Lone Star Stomp Committee: Claire Rogers, Billie Van Slyke, Juliane Mahlmann, Keely Knipling, Tim Kaminski, Ann Werlein, Kathy Kubelka and Daniela Abrego.

Get ready for a groovy time at the Fort Bend County Museum Association’s 28th Annual Lone Star Stomp! Set for Saturday, April 8th at the George Ranch Historical Park, located at 10215 FM 762 in Richmond, this year’s Stomp will be a throwback to the 1960s as the Museum Association celebrates its 50th anniversary. Revel in the decade that brought Beatlemania, flower children and the Summer of Love with live music by The Triumphs, dinner catered by The Swinging Door, live and silent auctions, signature cocktails and lots of 1960s era fun! The Museum Association, which was founded on April 11, 1967 by an eclectic group of 22 citizens from all over Fort Bend County, has been sharing and preserving Fort Bend County’s history for five decades. Honorary chairmen for this year’s Stomp are the original founders and their descendants. “Our founders knew how important it was to preserve our heritage for the future,” said Billie Van Slyke, chairman of the 2017 Stomp. “Without their vision, so much of our important Texas history would have been lost over the decades. We are so excited to honor the founders and their families with this ‘far-out’ party that will celebrate the past 50 years – and look forward to the next 50!” The steering committee is co-chaired by Dottie Allen, Diane Elko and Keely Knipling. All proceeds benefit the Fort Bend County Museum Association. Tickets start at $75 each for open seating and $800 for a reserved table of eight. For tickets and more information, call 281-342-1256 or visit www.fortbendmuseum.org/lone-star-stomp.html.

A Legacy of Quality Repair and Customer Service

T

wo family men with years of auto industry experience between them decided a little more than five years ago it was time to create a business of their own. As fortune would have it, their business, Expert Collision Center, has become the go-to location for car repair needs.

It was as a 13-year-old boy helping his father work, when Lopez began to fall in love with what he does to this very day. As Lopez visited large collision repair facilities alongside his dad, a dream was born to one day own his very own center. For Gutierrez, it is his passion for cars that motivates him to put his heart and soul into the shop’s legacy. Expert Collision is more than a car repair shop; it is an expression of what quality work should be, how customers should be valued and the role a business plays in its community.

Expert Collision opened its doors in February 2012 at its first location on 1st Street in Rosenberg by business partners Freddy Lopez of Richmond, Texas and Gary Gutierrez of Fulshear, Texas. Before long, business was booming prompting the men to seek out a larger location, this time at 3501 BF Terry Boulevard, Suite D in Rosenberg. “We out grew our old location and opened our second location March 2015,” Lopez said, adding their goal was to find “an ideal spot going from 3,000 square feet to 12,000 square feet with freeway visibility.” Having grown up in Fresno, Texas where his father owns a repair shop also, Lopez said Expert Collision Center is more than a business to him; it is a continuation of a legacy.

Expert Collision Center prides itself on providing unrivaled skills in returning damaged cars to pre-crash condition as quickly as possible. In fact, that is a personal satisfaction of Lopez and Gutierrez: “We love the look on our customers’ faces when they come to pick up their vehicles, and they can’t even tell it was ever in an accident,” Lopez said. The 15 employees at the center work diligently to restore all makes and models of vehicles — no matter what year the vehicle is — while also working with all insurance companies. “And, we offer free estimates on site and provide great out-of-pocket quotes,” Lopez added. A customer’s car is not just a problem to be fixed. Expert Collision understands their customers are people with im-

portant lives, jobs and family, which undoubtedly depends on a working vehicle in great condition, and it is that approach that garners enthusiastic reviews from Expert Collision customers. Rosenberg resident Brian Ridge said, hands down, the work at Expert Collision Center “is the best work I have ever seen.” After being hit at 60 miles an hour, Ridge’s brand new Tundra truck sustained considerable damage, but you would never be able to tell. “I would never go anywhere else,” Ridge said, adding that he has also taken his wife’s car in for slight damage to her bumper when she was rear-ended. “The pricing is fair, and they will work with your insurance to make sure what needs to get done, gets done. I couldn’t even tell my truck had been in an accident. They’re that good. What can I say? Their work is superb. If you need work on your car, you need to go see them.” “Our customers are more to us than just another job,” said Gutierrez. “We build a relationship with each and every one of them on some level. And of course, our work speaks for itself.”

Where Everyone Knows Your Name

Two years ago, Marlene Borrero and her husband were in a car accident leaving their car in desperate need of repairs, and Borrero said she was grateful to have made her way to Expert Collision. “I live in the Houston city limits and won’t hesitate to drive to Expert Collision,” she said. “When I was in my accident, I was all nerves, as you could imagine, but they put me at ease. They truly focus on their customer service, and I can tell you it is absolutely phenomenal.” What impressed Borrero beyond the quality work completed on her car was the simple fact that every single time she called the shop, they knew who she was. “Usually you have to give the typical spiel of who you are, which car is yours and what happened to it, but I didn’t have to do that with them,” she said. “It was like I was calling my neighbor, and that meant so much to me.” Borrero said not too long ago she took her vehicle to them again for work, and she was stressed over the fact that she would need a ride to get to work. In her mind, she tried to figure out how to make everything work – that was until Ex-

Expert Collision Center’s 12,000 square foot Rosenberg facility administers every stage of auto repair.

pert Collision once again calmed her worries. “Again, they remembered exactly who I was. They told me not to panic because they were going to take care of me, and they did,” Borrero said, explaining that not only did the shop acquire a loaner car for her, a “very kind” employee brought the car to her job. “Within two hours, the car was there,” she said. “Any time I hear about someone needing a repair, I rant and rave about them because I trust their judgement and the way they treat their customers. They far exceeded my expectations. I’ll explain it this way: Expert Collision is full circle — from the person who answers the phone to the mechanic. Sometimes you go into a shop and the front desk is wonderful, but the mechanic is not. Or the front desk is rude but the mechanic is great. At Expert Collision, everyone is on the same level. I can’t say enough great things about them.” An experience like Borrero’s is what Expert Collision is all about, said Lopez. “Like we tell our customers, we are a small, privately owned business, and we are here to help the customers to the best of our ability. Dealing with the owners one-on-one really goes a long way, like being able to remember a customer by their name if they should ever have to come back to us.”

Family Men with Family Values Both Lopez and Gutierrez are family men. Lopez, 39, has three daughters – Zoe, Ady and Mali – with his wife, Amanda. Gutierrez, 33, has one daughter, Ava, with his wife, Natalie, so it was expected that the two would instill family values in their business. When a potential customer walks through the doors of Expert Collision, they are listened to, and each and every circumstance is taken into consideration. Simply put, they are treated like family. “We understand that times are hard, especially in the kind of situation that a lot of people are in when we get the chance to meet them for the first time,” Gutierrez said. “Our empathy is sincere, and that’s what makes every day so easy to relate and reassure our customers they will be taken care of.” Those family values also include the community at large. Each year since 2015, Expert Collision has hosted a Thanksgiving bash for a family in need. “We cook dinner, and there is live music and a silent auction that everyone is welcome to attend,” Lopez said. “All funds raised, which has been from $5,000 to $14,000, goes to the chosen family.” Expert Collision has also recently partnered with the Fort Bend Children’s Advocacy Center to assist with the organization’s stuffed animal supply, which is given to every child the center serves. They also helped St. Jude Children’s hospital with the purchase of the stuffed animal bears in their promotional sale through Kay Jewelers during the Christmas season. “We are a privately owned business here in Fort Bend County, but we take pride in everything we do,” Lopez said. “We will always put our customer’s needs first, and customer satisfaction is our main priority.”

Once a vehicle is taken in at Expert Collision, it will go through the estimate phase in which the estimator will determine the cost to repair the vehicle and will wait for insurance approval by the insurance representative who will assess the damages. When approved, the vehicle then goes into the disassemble phase, and it is at this time when the technician will make note of any supplemental work that needs to be completed. If additional work is need, a supplement request is sent to the insurance company for approval. In the meantime, parts are ordered based on the original estimate approval, and the vehicle will then enter the structure repair phase. Following that, the vehicle will go through body repair, painting and detailing and subjected to a quality assurance test once it is completed before its owner is contacted. As the crowd gathered in the atrium of the Jackson Street Campus to honor two of the community’s most wellknown residents, the words that could be heard most often were amazing, dedicated, caring and kind. The guests were describing Joe and Doris Gurecky. “We are here tonight to really honor two people who have meant so much to the community in so many ways and have done so much for this hospital,” said Jeff Council, the current president of OakBend Medical Center’s board. “Joe Gurecky is a former board member and a former president of the board of trustees of the hospital and a former mayor of Rosenberg. We are here tonight to honor the Gureckys in naming this atrium the ‘Joe & Doris Gurecky Atrium.’ It is a great honor for them, and it is a great honor for the hospital.” The program began with Joe reminiscing about the first time he saw the “new” hospital. One of the doctors giving the tour wanted to show Joe the fabulous new lighting that had been installed. It was lighting that would cast no shadows. “Look how far we’ve come,” stated Gurecky. “That was my first experience with the hospital, and never in my wildest dreams, when I was that age, the son of a sharecropper, did I ever think that Doris and my name would be on this wall. I thought today how fortunate we’ve been. God has been good to us.”

OakBend Medical Center Offers Stroke Awareness and Care Seconds count when it comes to a stroke. According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth largest cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. A stroke affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. When a stroke occurs, the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to the brain either become blocked by a clot or by ruptures. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. People who are at risk for a stroke include those who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and those who smoke. People with heart rhythm disturbances – especially those with AFib or atrial fibrillation – are also at risk. When you or someone you love exhibits signs of a stroke, it is important to act quickly. Remembering the acronym FAST can help you recognize the signs of a stroke. F is for face drooping, A is for arm weakness, S is for speech difficulty and T means it is time to call 9-1-1 if you see any of these signs. OakBend Medical Center has received seven consecutive Gold Plus Stroke Awards – the most in Fort Bend County. OakBend is here to help in times of need with board certified neurologists and staff trained to repair and help prevent damage due to a stroke. Visit one of their campuses at 1705 Jackson Street or 22003 Southwest Freeway at the first sign of stroke. For more information, visit www.oakbendmedcenter.org.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit New parents often ask, “When should my child first see a dentist?” The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics both agree that children should visit a pediatric dentist by age one. National studies have shown that preschool-aged children are getting more cavities. More than one in four children in the United States have had at least one cavity by the age of four, and many children get cavities as early as age two. Comprehensive initial exams for children under the age of two are always complimentary at the office of Larry Caldwell, DDS Dentistry For Children. At the initial one year visit, Dr. Caldwell and his staff will discuss how to care for an infant’s or toddler’s mouth; oral habits, including finger and thumb sucking; how to handle dental emergencies and accidents that could damage the face and teeth; bottle feeding and nursing as it relates to decay; teething and eruption of teeth and the link between diet and oral health. Dr. Caldwell recommends the first cleaning and X-rays between the age of two and a half and three years. When preparing a child for his first visit, use fun and positive words. Dr. Caldwell and his staff have expertise in handling the special needs and circumstances of all children. A positive dental experience is accomplished through efficient teamwork and a gentle patient approach. It is Dr. Caldwell’s goal to not only meet parents’ expectations of their children’s dental experience, but surpass it. Larry Caldwell, DDS Dentistry for Children is the home of Tillie the Tooth and the Harp Orthodontic Flosser. For more information, call 281-565kids (5437).

UT Physicians UT Physicians, the medical practice of McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), has opened its newest health center, UT Physicians Community Health & Wellness Center – Rosenberg, at 5115 Avenue H, Suite 701. The center offers high-quality primary care and mental health care for children and adults, as well as other wellness services such as exercise classes. Members of the community also have access to a demonstration kitchen, which will focus on providing education on healthier eating habits. “We hope to positively impact the overall health and well-being of adults and children in the area,” said Kevin O. Hwang, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine at McGovern Medical School and medical director of UT Physicians’ Community Health & Wellness Centers. “Partnering with existing community organizations will be crucial, because health is affected by so many factors outside of traditional medical care. We’re excited to get started.” The 8,800 square-foot clinic is equipped with 12 exam rooms and accepts walk-ins and appointments. With the help of geo-mapping and a needs assessment, the clinic has been placed in an area identified as medically underserved. Members of the staff are bilingual in Spanish. “We’re combining what you would find in a community center with a medical facility,” said Yen-Chi L. Le, PhD, project manager for the clinic. “It is a newer model of prevention and care.” The clinic is connected with the entire UT Physicians medical practice to offer patients a quick and seamless turnaround when referred by their primary care doctor to a specialist. Why Schedule Well-Child Checks? A child’s yearly check up is important. Even healthy children need regular preventative services, such as vision and hearing screens. A yearly checkup is a good opportunity to reassess a child’s growth, development and risk for various conditions. Well-child visits can help find and treat health problems before they become serious. They also allow parents and children to ask questions about the child’s health and establish a relationship with a primary care physician. A well-child visit will encourage children to stay healthy and make healthy choices. Just for Kids Pediatrics is committed to putting children first, working together with patients and families to provide exceptional medical care for kids in the Katy area. They pride themselves on providing compassionate, comprehensive services to children from birth through adolescence. From routine checkups to immunizations, Just for Kids Pediatrics is equipped to handle all of a child’s health needs. When parents choose Just for Kids Pediatrics for their child’s primary medical care, they can feel confident they are working with professionals who are qualified, experienced and caring. They do this by equipping parents with the support and resources needed to make the most educated decisions about their child’s health. How to Create a

Vertical Garden Traditional Vertical Gardens Vertical gardening may seem like a newer trend in gardening, but the concept is centuries old. Trellises, fences and other structure are traditional ways to support both vegetables and flowering vines. These structures are easy to install, as they are typically attached to an existing wall, secured in the soil or simply leaned against a fence or building. Found objects, such as old bed springs, metal racks and natural twigs and branches serve well as a basic trellis for annual vining plants, such as cucumbers, squash and melons. Flowering vines, such as nasturtiums, which grow as perennials in United States Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 9 through 11, are also well suited for simple trellises and fences.

Hanging Pots

V

ertical gardens allow you to grow flowers, herbs and vegetables in limited space by taking advantage of unused areas in your home or yard. These striking gardens draw the eye upwards, visually enlarging the area and creating a living wall of color. Designing your own vertical garden excites the imagination while creating a practical alternative to gardening in the soil. The key to a successful vertical garden is a blank wall and interesting containers for holding the plants.

Figure Out the Whys The first step to creating a vertical garden is to determine the purpose of the garden. Whether you dream of a living wall of color overflowing with brightly colored flowers or fresh fruits and vegetables at your fingertips affects the type of vertical garden you need to design. While many annual flowers, green leafy vegetables and herbs thrive in small containers, many garden vegetables require more room for root growth and strong structures to support the growing plants. These are important considerations when designing a vertical garden.

Inexpensive plant pot hangers can be attached to a wall or a section of lattice to create a dramatic display of flowering plants or herbs. These convenient hangers screw into the wall and are hidden from view by the plant pot, giving the illusion of bright pots suspended in front of the wall. Other options include hanging pieces of plastic gutter filled with soil and plants or plant pockets made from felt. Although felt pockets can be pricey, they create a stunning display when filled with herbs and flowers.

Reclaimed and Recycled Materials Recycled soda bottles create a whimsical display when used to hold a variety of flowers and plants. Cut an opening in the side of the bottle and add drainage holes. Then, fill the bottle with soil and plants and suspend it so it hangs horizontally from wires or strings. Creating a wall of hanging plants in recycled soda bottles is an inexpensive way to make a bold statement while increasing your gardening space. Nearly any container that will hold soil – from a yard sale teapot to old rain boots – can be used as plant pots and suspended on a garden wall. Source: http://homeguides.sfgate.com

High School HOT SHOT Meet Bobby Crow

R

obert “Bobby” Crow, a senior at George Ranch High School, has accomplished undeniable success in academics and athletics. Compassionate, caring and a valuable community volunteer, Bobby is committed to making our world a better place to live. Bobby has taken diversified Advanced Placement (AP) classes throughout his high school career. He is currently enrolled at Wharton County Junior College in Sugar Land’s freshman English course. He is a member of the Technology Student Association (TSA), where his team’s engineering project advanced to state. Bobby’s favorite teacher is Harold Reeves, his Geometry and Algebra II teacher. “Mr. Reeves is a great teacher who runs his classroom with authority, and I like that,” said Bobby. “He holds everyone in his class accountable for their work. He has two personality traits that I value most – his willingness to help others and his determination to keep people on task. Mr. Reeves does not allow anyone to fall behind in his classroom; he makes himself available most mornings for tutorials. He also doesn’t allow people to slack off in his class. His classroom is a great learning environment.” Bobby’s forte is soccer. Since the age of five, he has played soccer at the city level, club level and now plays mid-fielder on George Ranch High School’s varsity soccer team. “Soccer is a great sport that brings people together in order to win. There isn’t a single game that has been won based off of one player. It takes the whole team to communicate and work together in order to win. I like playing with a team. It’s a great way to build relationships and make new friends.” One thing Bobby will treasure the most about his high school experience is “the valuable time management skills I have learned. High school has taught me how to balance academics and extracurricular activities while still having time for my personal life. If I had not learned how to balance my time, I feel that college would be an incredibly difficult challenge.”

Bobby

In addition to his commitment to academics and sports, Bobby donates his time volunteering at Attack Poverty in North Richmond, working with teams that have renovated several homes. They work on construction, clean up and prep work. He has also been a guest service host at River Pointe Church in Richmond for many years. He answers questions about the church, guides new children to the correct building and answers the phones. Two values Bobby lives by are commitment and compassion. “I live by commitment to show loyalty and bravery in everything I do. Making a commitment is a promise to oneself, and when I honor that commitment, I can achieve my goals. I demonstrate compassion during school and at Young Life. As a senior leader for Young Life, one of my goals for the club is to build relationships with everyone. Being a leader allows me to influence people in a positive way. I have the chance to shape younger people into great, respectable people by setting good examples. I will be a camp counselor this summer, and I hope that I can become a friend to the kids at camp and guide them onto the right path.” This fall, Bobby plans to attend either Colorado School of Mines or Texas A&M University to pursue an environmental engineering degree. Congratulations on your successes in school and life Bobby, and good luck as we continue to watch you make an impact on this world in the future. Bobby enjoying the outdoors.

“I live by commitment to show loyalty and bravery in everything I do. Making a commitment is a promise to oneself, and when I honor that commitment, I can achieve my goals.” – Bobby Crow 30

A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY

The Richmond State Supported Living Center.

Richmond State Supported Living Center:

A History of Dignity and Respect

In

the early 1800s, when the leaders of Fort Bend County sat down to structure the most essential needs of the community, schooling was a top priority. Public schools were implemented to teach students the basic necessities of reading, writing and arithmetic. Schools were a one-room building, and teachers taught students of all ages and abilities. Special needs children were forced to learn at the same pace as the others. When behavior and learning skills were addressed, parents were requested to place their child in an asylum instead of a school. This difficult decision resulted in a demoralizing environment where people were treated with cruel discipline. Many years later, the Richmond State School opened to place children and adults in an exclusive school to foster their needs and to teach them lessons for life. Vaclav Pultar, a Russian immigrant, came to the United States in 1910 with his family to begin life again as cotton farmers. The Pultar family lived near Rosenberg, and Vaclav loved to go fishing at Rocky Falls in Richmond. In 1923, Vaclav purchased 200 acres of land at Rocky Falls on the Brazos River. He recalled, “From the time I moved on this land, I had a dream in the back of my mind that someday I would have an old folks’ home or an orphanage on this property.” In 1960, Richmond residents Lila Thompson and Rhydonia Jones determined to start a school for the mentally dis-

abled in the area. They met with Wharton Weems of The George Foundation to see what could be done. The Board of Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation were willing to build a facility if the ladies could secure the necessary land. In 1961, Vaclav sold the land to The George Foundation for $100,000 to start a school for citizens with special needs. Vaclav, thrilled that his lifetime dream was accomplished, donated the money to his Vaclav Pultar. church. Photo from Fort Bend County Texas: In April 1968, Richmond State School A Pictorial History. for the Mentally Retarded was opened, admitting 450 residents. The school served children, youth and primarily adults who lived on the property. Seven units in 11 buildings housed residents, and care and supervision were a top priority. The school offered an intensive physical therapy program, as well as daily education classes. In 1981, Russell Moody sustained a serious brain injury in a motor vehicle accident. His father, Robert, created the Transitional Learning Center at Moody Gardens in Galveston with the purpose to begin a hippotherapy riding program for people with brain injuries. Using horses to encourage physical rehabilitation and increase speech use proved to be highly effective in occupational therapy. On March 26, 1992, the Jesse H. Jones Wing of the Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Center opened in Richmond. In addition to the extensive and effective therapy programs, the Russell Shearn Moody Riding Arena and the Reva Williams Petting Zoo was created on the property, enhancing the advantages to the community. In 1994, recreational and behavioral programs, along with expanded medical and dental offices, continued to improve the basic care for the residents. Today, the center is renamed Richmond State Supported Living Center and is a community of over 340 adults living with intellectual disabilities from ages 20 to 90. A team of professionals design an individualized program that meets their needs 24/7. In 2018, the center will celebrate 50 years of success. They will continue to serve Fort Bend County with a highly qualified staff and volunteer base seeking to improve the quality of life, one person at a time.
