FetaLink Fall DST Workflow

On November 2, 2015, many parts of the US will observe a me change from Daylight Savings Time (DST) to Standard Time. (ST). What this means for clinicians working in acute care se ngs is that the hour between 0100-0200 repeats, as the clocks are pushed back. This has the poten al to impact documenta on in electronic health records. FetaLink has been designed to stay up during the ambiguous me frame surrounding the DST event. However, certain considera ons should be made by healthcare organiza ons as they plan for this short, but significant, event. In the Model Experience, you will find the recommended workflow for DST.

Women’s Health Newsletter Maintaining Industry Awareness National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day October 15th is a day of remembrance for pregnancy loss and infant death. It is observed annually in the United States and Canada and, in recent years, in the United Kingdom and in the Australian States of Western Australia and New South Wales. Client Spotlight Southwest General Southwest General is a 358-bed hospital located in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. Na onally recognized for award-winning care, Southwest General offers comprehensive inpa ent and outpa ent services as well as specialized cardiovascular, emergency, neuroscience, oncology, orthopedic and women’s health services, including excep onal maternity services. Our Maternity Unit features seven private labor rooms, two of which offer birthing tubs, and 15 private postpartum rooms that provide a relaxing, quiet and healing environment. More than 1,000 babies are delivered annually at Southwest General. We have a Level I Nursery that offers constant care for any newborn requiring incubator support and advanced neonatal support through our partnership with University Hospital’s Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Our Cerner partnership began in 1989 with the implementa on of PathNet and has con nued over the years with implementa on of PMOffice, RadNet, FirstNet, PharmNet, PowerChart, SurgiNet, Clinical Documenta on, IView, IPOC, Bar Code Medica on Administra on, PowerNote, Dynamic Documenta on, ePrescribe, XR Clinical Repor ng, Pa ent Portal, CareCompass, Histories, Scheduling, Anesthesia, Endoscopy, Ambulatory PowerChart and Capacity Management, and PowerChart Maternity and FetaLink. The PowerChart Maternity and FetaLink Project was ini ated in September 2013 and rolled out in the Acute Care and Ambulatory se ngs in August 2014—one of the busiest delivery months in Southwest’s history. Prior to implementa on, clinical documenta on in Maternity Services was hybrid, consis ng of GE Centricity (Labor & Delivery), Cerner PowerChart (Postpartum, Nursery) and paper documenta on. PowerChart Maternity and FetaLink Project team members met weekly and included IT clinical analysts, subject ma er experts from Maternity Services and the Women’s Health Ambulatory Office, and a physician champion. To foster collabora on, consistent communica on with par cipa ng departments was a priority and was accomplished through department mee ngs, huddles and use of communica on boards. The training effort consisted of posi on-specific manuals and both a mixture of classroom (Nursing) and 1:1 training (Provider). The smooth transion during go-live is a ributed in part to the extensive communica on, training and elbow-to-elbow support.

You may have heard about a new post-birthing trend called “seeding” for babies born via C-sec on. This is where a swab is used to transfer vaginal fluids from mom to baby’s mouth, face and body in the event of a C-sec on delivery. Studies over the past few years have implied— although not proven — that the difference in early bacterial exposure could change the way a baby's immune system develops and explain why Csec on babies are slightly more prone to things like allergies and asthma. The theory is that by swabbing the C-sec on newborn with the mom’s vaginal bacteria– the baby’s immune system will more closely resembles that of a baby born through the vagina.

Although “seeding” has not been scien fically proven, ACOG has not made an official statement, and your L&D unit probably does not have a protocol outlined for “seeding” – more and more C-sec ons moms are reques ng that “seeding” be done for their newborns. It will be interes ng over the next few years to follow research on whether “seeding” is truly beneficial and what method turns out to be best.

In the News Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Alexander D. Brickler, MD, a family medicine physician with advanced training in obstetrics at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH), has delivered over 30,000 babies during his accomplished medical career spanning six decades. As one of the first African American physician to join the TMH medical staff, his commitment to medicine has resulted in him training over 330 physicians through the Family Medicine Residency Program and caring for many pa ents in need. Known for many accomplishments, Dr. Brickler's recogni on includes being named Na onal Family Physician of the Year in 1982 by the American Academy of Family Physicians and Good Housekeeping and the Florida Hospital Associa on's Life me Heroic Achievement Award as well as running the Olympic Torch through Tallahassee, Fla. for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. ‐PR Newswire

Qatar’s Newborn Screening Program (QNSP) has benefited about 205,832 babies since it was established in December 2003, according to experts at Hamad Medical Corpora on’s (HMC) Women’s Hospital.
education programs through the Vicki Welsh Ovarian Cancer Fund, a Kansas City-based ovarian cancer awareness fund.
The program has enabled early diagnosis of 642 babies with disorders, resul ng in over 98 percent of the babies being successfully treated for poten ally fatal or disabling condi ons that o en do not show visible symptoms during the first few days of a baby’s life. The program has three pillars: the Newborn Screening Unit based at Women’s Hospital, which works with the family’s main healthcare team to arrange for screening and follows up on the results; the dedicated laboratories, including the main laboratory at HMC’s Rumailah Hospital and the one at University Children's Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, that provides a back-up to verify results for some disorders; and the pediatric management team that works with families following the confirma on of diagnosis of a disorder in their child, which o en requires long-term treatment. Screening and treatment for the disorders can be very expensive, but are provided free of charge by the State of Qatar to all babies born in the country. The screening is usually done during the first 36 hours a er a baby is born, and is available at all HMC hospitals with birth facili es. The QNSP also works with private hospitals that have birth facili es to ensure that babies born there are covered by the screening program. ‐Albawaba Business
