Magazine for the Builth & Irfon & Wye Ministry Areas November 2019

From All Saints to Advent No Christian is solitary. Through baptism we become members one of another in Christ, members of a company of saints whose mutual belonging transcends death: One family, we dwell in him, one Church, above, beneath; though now divided by the stream, the narrow stream of death. (Charles Wesley) All Saints’ Day and the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed on All Souls’ Day both celebrate this mutual belonging. All Saints’ Day celebrates men and women in whose lives the Church as a whole has seen the grace of God powerfully at work. It is an opportunity to give thanks for that grace, and for the wonderful ends to which it shapes a human life; it is a time to be encouraged by the example of the saints and to recall that sanctity may grow in the ordinary circumstances, as well as the extraordinary crises, of human living. The Commemoration of the Faithful Departed celebrates the saints in a more local and intimate key. It allows us to remember with thanksgiving before God those whom we have known more directly: those who gave us life, or who nurtured us in faith. Redemption is a work of God’s grace; it is God who redeems us in Christ and there

is nothing to be done beyond what Christ has done. But we still wait for the final consummation of God’s new creation in Christ; those who are Christ’s, whether or not they have passed through death, are joined in prayer that God’s kingdom will be revealed finally and in all its fullness. We also sense that it is a fearful thing to come before the unutterable goodness and holiness of God, even for those who are redeemed in Christ; that it is searing as well as life-giving to experience God’s mercy; and this instinct also is expressed in the liturgy of All Souls’ Day. Remembrance Sunday goes on to explore the theme of memory, both corporate and individual, as we confront issues of war and peace, loss and self-gift, memory and forgetting. The annual cycle of the Church’s year now ends with the Feast of Christ the King. The year that begins with the hope of the coming Messiah ends with the proclamation of his universal sovereignty. The ascension of Christ has revealed him to be Lord of earth and heaven, and final judgement is one of his proper kingly purposes. The Feast of Christ the King returns us to the Advent theme of judgement, with which the cycle once more begins. Taken from articles found on From https://www.churchofengland.org/

Builth Ministry Area - Colwyn Dear Friends Isaiah 25:6-9 speaks of death which is the cause of many tears. But for those who trust in God, the time will come ‘when their tears will be wiped away’. For the Colwyn Benefice we have two main services in November which allow us to be mindful of those who have died.

We all need moments in our lives to mourn for those ‘whom we see no more.’ It is at such times during November where we can allow ourselves these moments.

On the 3rd of November at 10.00, St Bridget’s Llansantffraed is holding our annual All Souls Service. This service is about remembering our loved ones departed, where we become conscious of our loss and of our grief. This Service is for all of us to remember them and to know that Christ blesses and comforts all those who grieve.

Services for Year C November 2019

On the 10th November we hold our Benefice Remembrance Day Service at St Mary’s Church, Bettws. This year we will be remembering, not just those who have died during WW1 and WWII, but all those who have died in recent conflicts. Trevor will be reading a poem called ‘My boy Jack.’ Kipling wrote it for a 16-year-old boy called Jack Cornwell. He was the youngest recipient of the Victoria Cross, who stayed by his post on board ship during the battle of Jutland until he died.

Many times, Jesus speaks about God in terms of a father who cares for his children. When Jesus died he commended his soul into God’s hands with the trust of a child throwing himself into his father’s arms. We are God’s children and it is at times of death and the deep grief we have for our loved ones, that we are reminded of God’s love for us. At death everything is out of our hands, everything is out of our control. We are on our own. However, there is one who is still there for us. God. God, having loved us into existence and all through our lives, does not abandon us on death. If we continue to use a nautical theme, God’s love enables us to cast off from this earth and set sail for heaven, buoyed up with hope.

St Cadmarch’s Centenary Concert Friday, September 20th, 2019 St Cadmarchs church in Llangammarch was built during the Great War 1914 - 1918. The organ was dedicated with a recital on August 14th 1918 and the east Window dedicated as a Memorial Window in 1921. With funding from the Powys War Memorial Project and generous donations from the community the Centenary Project has been able to have the East window professionally cleaned and the organ refurbished. The culmination of the project was this special concert with a packed audience treated to a wonderful and varied programme of music. Organist Aeron Preston played solos showing off the improved range and richness of the organ. He was joined by cellist Jan Joris Boon with duets for organ and piano with cello. Joris also played a solo by the Dutch composer Manneke. There were songs sung beautifully by Llangammarch contralto Shelley Hughes and the Irfon Valley School choir. Simon Fraser the church organist introduced the programme which included two songs by famous local composer John Price, Beulah who was busy composing and conducting one hundred years ago. “Oh that I had Wings” was sung by the choir and accompanied by a string quartet. Shelley and Aeron sang the duet “Cradle Song”. A memorial piece “East Window” specially composed by Simon for the occasion featured handbells, organ, wind machine and lastly voices, with the children intoning the names of the fallen from different parts of the church. There was a Souvenir Programme, copies of which are available in St Cadmarch’s. The Centenary Project also included a new oak interpretation lectern for the church and a book of photographs showing close-up details of the remarkable stained glass, newly cleaned to its original brightness.

If you have any questions about services, please contact your Benefice Warden or a member of the Ministry Area Team. For others queries (baptisms, weddings, funerals, etc), please contact Rev’d Canon Mark Beaton (Area Dean) -Tel: 01544 350342, Email: revmark.beaton@gmail.com

Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle Dear All, During the season of Harvest we brought forth the fruits of love, grace and joy and this prepares us for the more sombre notes of November; a month that is often known as the month of the dead. This time of the year gives us the chance to acknowledge the world of unseen things that complement our physical lives and live in our hearts to give us a different (and true) reality; a reality that centres around Christ’s resurrection from the dead. The Feast of All Souls, on Saturday, the second of the month, is a time when we come together; this year in St Cewydd’s, Aberedw at 7.00pm for a Eucharist to celebrate and commemorate the lives of the departed, many of our own whom we love and miss. This is an important celebration when we open our hearts to acknowledge the presence of our ancestors and also the angels who bring a touch of heaven to us in our lives. Associated with this is All Saints Day, which we will be celebrating on the following day of Sunday the 3rd of the month. The two celebrations are connected. The Feast of All Saints gives us strength in our individual sorrows to remember the Saints who have trod a troubled path before us – even to martyrdom, their footpaths have paved the way to make it easier for us to follow and thus we may readily call upon their help and intercessions for us. Remembrance Sunday falls the 10th of the month and reminds us that our capacity for noble sacrifice is an intrinsic part of our nature; at our very best, humankind is truly

Christ-like. All these festivals show us that much of our life on earth is bound up with thoughts of heaven. To make sense of life we must hold on to the promise of eternal life that Jesus has promised for each one of us. The Feast of Christ the King on Sunday the 24th of November is the glorious climax of the Christian year. The celebration of this feast emphasises how humanity and divinity are inseparable within God’s love for us in Christ. He defined the true nature of kingship through uniting his divine nature with our human condition thus showing us that the true nature of all sovereignty and leadership involves serving humanity through the embrace of love. His knowledge of our human frailty enables him to sit at the right hand of God for all eternity and be our advocate in heaven for all time – our King who carries us with him - Christus Rex. May this thought dwell in your hearts for the season of Advent as the story of his kingship begins.

In life and death – through all perplexities and sorrows, may God surround you with His love. May he give you understanding and patience. Father Paul. X

‘MESSY CHURCH’ We are hoping to start ‘Messy Church’ in Builth. We are looking for volunteers to join our very small team. You will need DBS check but this we can arrange for you Gina Ayling Children, Youth and Families

Share a little light Some parents aren’t sure quite what to feel about Hallowe’en – is it just harmless fun, or are there aspects of it that don’t fit in with how we want to see the world? A child's christening service is very honest about the reality of good and evil, and Hallowe’en can be a good time to talk about those things and how the love of Jesus can be a ‘light in the darkness’ for everyone. The word “hallowe’en” actually means “the eve of all hallows’ day” – in other words, the night before the church’s festival celebrating All Saints. A Saint is sometimes thought to be an exceptionally holy person – someone really special, who did extraordinary things because of their faith in God. The famous saints are all amazing examples of what it’s like to live God’s way. But in the Bible, St Paul calls all Christians saints – a saint is simply a friend of God, who seeks to live their life according to God’s purposes. When someone is christened, they truly become a Saint, so All Saints’ day is a celebration of the whole family of God. Visit this place, O Lord, we pray and drive far from it all snares of the enemy; let your holy angels dwell with us to preserve us in peace; and let your blessing be upon us always through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. You can use this lovely prayer any time when you need a reminder that God is with you – especially at the end of a difficult day, or when something sad has happened, or when your family is worried about something. Many thanks to Ruth Green from the Church of England Life events team for permission to use this article. For the full article and more like it, visit churchsupporthub.org. We are holding a sleepover to help raise funds to donate to the “Open Doors” and Diocese fundraising schemes. This will be held on the evening of 22nd NOVEMBER (from 9.00p.m. until 9.00 a.m.).
