Dear Parents, We would like to take this opportunity to wish each one of you a happy, healthy and successful 2009!! Despite the tough budget times, our business community, and our parents did not hesitate to support our less fortunate this holiday season. Thanks to all of you for your donations and your volunteer hours. Please check our business partners list in this newsletter so you can support them. As we start this new semester now is the time to do a progress check on your child. Make sure he/she has passed the first semester. Do not hesitate to contact your child’s teachers, guidance counselor and administration if necessary. Do not wait until it is too late. The PIN System is also helpful. Please go to our JHMS website and register for PIN if you are not registered yet. If you have any questions regarding PIN call the front office. Remember also that FCAT exams are in February and March.

Make yourself available for talks and try to have them each day. At the same time be respectful of your teen needs for silence. Offer praise when deserved and remember to express your love even if your teen acts like it does not matter – It does. Be positive and encouraging, and choose words and concepts that teens understand. Rather than jump to conclusions, give your teen a chance to explain thoughts and actions. Be brief. Most teens tune out nagging, and retain shorter messages longer. Don’t feel you know everything. It is okay to say “I don’t know, but let’s find out together.”

NEWS FROM GUIDANCE It’s hard to believe that the first semester is almost over and our second semester is about to begin. We are about to enter a very busy time as we prepare for FCAT testing, registration and completion of your students’ current grade. Report cards are going home January 23rd and then we will have 2 more quarters before the year is out. Please be sure to keep up with your child’s progress, stay in touch with guidance and arrange for parent teacher conferences when necessary. Parents, please sign up for PIN (Parent Information Network) so that you can keep up with your student’s class grades.
REGISTRATION
High School Registration will take place January 26th. There will be a 2 week registration period to decide high school choices. Please help your child fill out the registration card and communicate with teachers for the most appropriate class choices. Oviedo High School will hold a parent night on Monday, Feb. 2nd at 6:30 P.M. and Hagerty High School will hold their parent night on Thursday, Jan. 29th at 6:30 P.M. Please plan to attend if you have an 8th grader so that you and your student can start to plan for the next 4 years. Our students are exploring their interests and what careers to consider in the future. The state has also mandated that students to be starting this career investigation process and with the guidance of Mr. Randy Harper and Mrs. Sharon Zvarych most of our 7th and 8th graders are creating accounts on www.flchoices.org and www.facts.org for EPEP. All 7 & 8th graders are completing the online EPEP course planning for courses in which they are interested for high school. Parents please review the parent’s information on the www.facts.org web site. The Guidance department will be coordinating applications for special electives during the week of March 23rd after FCAT. The electives that can be chosen are Employability Skills, (8th grade only) Future Teachers (8th grade only), Journalism, Peer Mediation, ROTC, Video Production, and Yearbook. These forms can be picked up from the guidance office when announced. Your student must submit a completed application and obtain 3 teacher recommendation forms in order to be considered for these programs. Your student will not be considered for these programs without fulfilling all the requirements for application. Please note that application for an elective class does not guarantee admission. The Guidance Department will be visiting the current 6th and 7th grade classes at the end of April to discuss registration and elective classes offered for the following year Incoming 5th grade students will be registering separately. The students will be visiting Jackson Heights April 28th and April 30th
FCAT TESTING
We will be doing FCAT testing in March. Please make note of the following dates: February 10, 2009 FCAT Writes. This is the FCAT writing test for 8th Grade only. Simulated FCAT tests will be given to the 6th and 7th Grade at the same time. Tuesday, March 3rd SSS Reading Wednesday, March 4th SSS Math Thursday, March 5th SSS 8th Grade Science, 6th and 7th Grade simulation Science Please make sure your students get a good night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast. As you know class placement is often determined by the student’s performance on the FCAT so it is very important that you help stress the need for your student to give his/her very best effort. We are preparing our Curriculum Guide and 6th Grade Orientation Booklet for next year and have chosen student designs for our covers. We are very happy to announce the winners for this year’s front and back covers. We had so many good entries that we decided to showcase work on front and back!! We are also using artwork that received honorable mention as welcome back posters on our bulletin boards for next year!! Congratulations to Grace Li for the excellent cover design of the Curriculum Guide. Congratulations to Steven Morales for his excellent design for the back cover of the Curriculum Guide. Enakshi Shah and Sakeenah Khan were the winners for the front and back cover of the Orientation Guide. Honorable mention goes to Courtney Duke-Anderson and Isabel DeAguiar.

The date for the most anticipated event in Oviedo is quickly approaching. Mark your calendars for Friday, March 27th at Lawton Chiles Middle School. The Oviedo event has been chosen by the American Cancer Society to be a site for the Cancer Prevention Study. Motivating Your Child
Give your child a ‘motivation boost’ for the second half It may be a new calendar year, but the school year is getting old. The half-way point has come and gone. Your child’s September enthusiasm has faded like the sun on a winter afternoon. Time for a new helping of motivation to see him through the winter and gear up for a successful spring. Don’t forget to: • Encourage and praise. Look at your child as he is bent over his textbook and say, “I see how hard you’re working and I know it will pay off.” Remember the rule of saying five positive things for every one negative. Follow it. • Stay involved. Back-to-School Night and first-quarter teacher conferences are behind you, but your participation should be ongoing. Attend a game or other school event together. Call or email his teachers to check in and ask how you can help him. Let him know you enjoy spending time with him. • Give specific suggestions. Does your child need to brush up on study skills? Have him take notes as he reads. They can help him learn key concepts. Keep a separate list of vocabulary words and their meanings. Refer to it when reading. Fitting In
Help your middle schooler banish bullying and stop being a victim Is your preteen being picked on at school? If he is, there are steps he can take to get his power back. Help him: • Figure out when the bullying usually happens. Teach your preteen to notice where the problem tends to start, and to avoid that situation. • Respond appropriately. Help your preteen determine which reactions—such as crying or yelling—fuel more bullying. Would humor lighten up the situation? Can he just walk away? • Widen his horizons. Isolation can lead to being bullied, so enlarge your preteen’s social circle (such as through a club or team). Work with him on his social skills. • Seek help from the school. Your preteen should talk with a caring adult at his school, such as his guidance counselor. Most schools have a no tolerance policy on bullying. Make sure you and your child know the details of your school’s policy. Alter your parenting style during middle school years
When your child was in elementary school, you probably made most of the decisions about his life. You may have set rules about bedtime, when he could go out to play, and when he had to do his homework. Now that your child is in middle school, he needs a less heavy-handed approach. Part of his job is to begin to assume control over his own life and responsibilities. To help your child become more independent: • Offer more privileges, but always tie them to responsibility. When your child acts responsibly (completing chores, doing homework on time, behaving respectfully), he should get more freedom. When he does not, he’ll have to forgo his “adult privileges” until he is ready. • Offer more guidance, less direction. When your child has a problem, try not to say, “Do it this way.” Instead, say, “Have you considered this?” • Continue to connect with your child. Yes, your child is growing into his own person. Yes, his friends are very important to him. But you are, too. Your child needs to know he has your love, care and respect. Show you value his newfound maturity by asking his opinion on grown-up topics, such as current events. Mathematics Competition American Mathematics Competition Exam
Learn how you can be a positive academic coach for your preteen
A good coach is someone who guides, encourages and inspires. A noted clinical child psychologist says thinking of yourself in this role is a good way to make sure your child is ready to learn. Start the new calendar with a resolution that you can be a “positive academic coach” for your child. Here are some guidelines: • Be a resource. Never do your child’s homework for him. But be around, whenever you can be, to give encouragement, answer questions and suggest places (such as a website) that your child might go to find out more. • Don’t scold. Remember, you are a positive coach. So skip the comments like, “You’re doing it all wrong.” • Don’t feel you have to know it all. There will be times when you are not familiar with the curriculum your child is expected to know. It’s okay to say, “I never learned that. Are there any hints in your book?” • Talk about what your child is learning. Grades are important, but they are a product of learning. It is equally important (many experts say even more so) to emphasize the process. This includes hard work, effort and making progress. • Understand your child has strengths and weaknesses. Your child may never need help in social studies, but that doesn’t mean he may not sometimes get confused in math. Support and encourage your child in every class, but do not expect the same performance in every subject. On Tuesday November 18th, ninety Jackson Heights’ students stayed after school to participate in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC 8). This contest is sponsored by the University of Nebraska. Nearly 150,000 other students worldwide, including more than 6000 from Florida, also took this extremely hard examination on that day. Many of our students were quite successful in this contest. Anya Katsevich and Joy Shen both made perfect scores. Only two other students in Florida, and 325 worldwide, scored this high. The AMC 8 has three levels of awards, Distinguished Honor Roll, Honor Roll, and Merit Roll. To receive distinguished Honor Roll students may only miss less than three problems. Less than 3% of participating students received this award. Besides Anya and Joy, John Li and Eric Anschuetz both qualified for this. To be on the Honor Roll students can only miss up to six problems. The following JHMS students accomplished this: Tatiana Anthony, Megan Mullally, Allison Burgunder, Mitchell Callaway, Jonathan Le, Sydney Garick, Charles Hill, and Katie Tobik. The Merit Roll is for students in grades six or lower who do well. JHMS winners were: Andrew Allen, Justin Hughes, Kylie Dunmire, Shelby Krupar, and Austin Parker. Two other students were also recognized. Andrew Smithey had the third highest score in the Algebra 1 division, and Lauren Smiarowski had the 3rd highest score in the Pre-Algebra division. Congratulation to all these students, and to all our other students, who stayed after school to participate in a math competition.
Seminole High School Math Competition
The first mathematics competition of the 2008-2009 school year was held on Saturday December 13th at Seminole High School. There were 116 students, representing nine middle schools, competing. Eleven of these students were from Jackson Heights. Five of the Jackson Heights students finished in the Top 15, winning individual trophies. They were: Anya Katsevich 1st, Eric Anschuetz 2nd, John Li 5th, Tatiana Anthony 11th, and Megan Mullally 14th. The other team members were: Mitchell Callaway, Jonathan Le, Garrett Haywood, Allison Burgunder, Josh Koller, and Sydney Garick. Jackson Heights also took the top two places in the team category, with the other team placing 11th out of thirtyone teams. This was an excellent showing for the first competition. Congratulations to all these students. Our next competition will be in Vero Beach on January 17th.
7 & 8th grade news!
This is an exciting time for our 7th & 8th graders. It is not too soon to have our students start to consider their interests and what careers to consider in the future. The state has also mandated that students start this career investigation process. Eighth graders are invited to Open Houses at local high schools Hagerty and Oviedo. All seventh & eighth graders are completing the online EPEP course planning for courses they are interested in. Mathematics Inquiry Mathematics
If your student has been talking and sharing activities within his/her math classroom with you parents at home, the remarks may be somewhat different than in years past. By the end of the 2008-2009 school year, all of the JHMS math teachers will have been trained on teaching strategies known as “Inquiry Mathematics”. The principles behind this type of learning have been well-researched and make sense. Instead of learning facts and relying on recalling specific steps to math…inquiry mathematics connects mathematical concepts with the real world and discovery of what is behind the facts of math. In an inquiry math instructed classroom, students are actively engaged in talking about math and working the math problems as well as sharing their answers with peers and the instructor. Students do not sit passively by and let the teacher do most of the work. In fact, the students are seen more engaged in learning and more accountable for their own learning than in a traditional math class. Hopefully, this type of math instruction will better prepare our students for the global economy and workforce.
Math Marvels
To the Parents of Jackson Heights Middle School, Students can receive some extra assistance through the Math Marvels program three days per week beginning for seventh and eighth graders on January 26, 2009. The Seventh Grade Math Marvels will be meeting in Ms. Quaid’s room, room 8-121 from 4:00-5:00 P.M. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. Our eighth graders will be meeting in Mrs. Hardy’s classroom, room 2-204 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. During these one hour lessons, your student will receive instruction with an inquiry-based approach to solving real-world math problems with a strong connection to math concepts. Not only will this additional assistance benefit your student with their regular math classes, but also, many of the concepts reviewed will appear on future FCAT math tests. We are going to extend the Math Marvels program for sixth graders beginning the week of January 26, 2009 as well. Students will continue to meet in room 5-002F under the direction of Ms Perez, sixth grade math teacher. Lessons will continue three days per week from 4:00-5:00 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Extra credit will be earned for each day the student attends these sessions and the extra credit can be applied to their regular math class grades. Math Marvels is a totally free program for our Jackson Heights students and the commitment to attend any one day or all three days is totally up to your family. The only obligation to the family is to provide transportation home for your student at 5:00 P.M. throughout the months of January, February, and the first week of March. No sign up is necessary. Just show up and have some math fun with other Math Marvels! So join other Math Marvel students for some fun with Inquiry Mathematics! Teen Read Fest
The 2008 Teen Read Fest awards night was a great success! Teens from middle and high schools throughout the county submitted their original poetry, essays or short films. The winning entries were invited to an awards night called Teen Read Fest 2008.The teens read their poems and essays or talked about their short films. The event was attended by over 150 proud parents, teens, teachers and librarians. The evening was filmed by Seminole County Government Television and will be shown on SGTV cable channel. Jackson Heights’ winning entry was the poem written by Austin Parcell. He did an outstanding job!
