Associated Builders and Contractors of Michigan is enthusiastically endorsing Rick Snyder to become the next governor of Michigan. ABC Snyder believes that Michigan desperately needs a pro-business chief executive to put the state back on the path toward economic prosperity, and that Snyder fits that profile perfectly. What’s more, Snyder’s platform — and more important, his track record as a jobs creator in both the private and public sectors — shows that he understands the issues that are important to ABC members: lower taxes, efficient government, the elimination of onerous regulations
and the promotion of free enterprise. He would provide welcome relief from failed, stale policies that stifle competition and cater to special interests, including union bosses. Like ABC members, Snyder understands what it takes to plan, launch and build a business. As president of Gateway computers, he oversaw day-to-day operations of the Fortune 500 company. In the public sector, Snyder has served as chairman of the Michigan Economic Development Corp. during a period when the agency was garnering national awards, and he oversaw the launch of the Michigan Life Sciences Corridor. Snyder has named Rep. Brian Calley as his pick for lieutenant governor.
Calley, in his role as representative for the 33rd district, was 100 percent supportive of ABC issues and will be an asset to the Merit Shop as lieutenant governor. As governor, Snyder promises to reinvent Michigan’s economy and reform the bloated and inefficient state government. ABC of Michigan believes Snyder has what it takes to create a brighter future for the state and its construction industry.

BILL SCHUETTE In his long political career featuring stints as a U.S. congressman from Michigan, director of the state Department of Agriculture, state senator and state Schuette Court of Appeals judge, Bill Schuette has consistently endorsed the principles that ABC members hold dear. For that reason, ABC of Michigan is enthusiastically endorsing Schuette as the state’s next attorney general. Schuette would replace fellow Republican Mike Cox, who served the maximum two terms under Michigan law.
As indicated by the long list of previous positions held, Schuette — now in private law practice as senior counsel at the law firm of Warner, Norcross & Judd — would bring a breadth of experience to the attorney general’s office. His track record as a lawmaker and jurist showed him to be a supporter of business who protected the state constitution from special interests. The same can’t necessarily be said of his Democratic opponent, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, who rose to political prominence in a county where union bosses hold considerable sway. ABC of Michigan is confident that we can count on Schuette’s principled support of the free enterprise system that built this country into an economic powerhouse and that will get Michigan back on track.

Johnson, a former state representative, is a fiscal conservative who could be counted on to hold the line on spending while fighting against higher Secretary of State fees. In Oakland County, she enhanced government transparency and accountability by putting campaign donation records online. Johnson is running against Democratic candidate Jocelyn Benson, a Wayne State University law professor. MICHIGAN

an advantage that many political observers predict is safe — give or take a seat or two — despite the upcoming widespread turnover resulting from term limits. Only nine incumbents – five Republicans and four Democrats – are among the candidates for the 38 Senate seats up in 2010. Although Republicans appear likely to retain their majority, the Senate will remain a pro-business bastion only if ABC members and other voters turn out at the polls and choose the appropriate candidate who represents their district from the accompanying list.

Term limits will also ensure plenty of new faces in the 110-member state House next January. Fortyeight incumbents — 29 Democrats and 19 Republicans — are not running for re-election. While completely erasing the Democrats’ double-digit majority in a single election seems a tall order, the hope is to at least shrink that advantage

RACES In one of the most hotly contested congressional races in the country, ABC is endorsing the return of Tim Walberg to Washington. During his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives, Walberg proved himself a friend of ABC by advocating for lower taxes, fewer regulations, less government spending and lower energy costs. Now, Walberg is fighting hard to take back the 7th Congressional District seat
in south-central Michigan he lost to Democrat Mark Schauer in 2008. ABC members could make the difference in a tight race. We desperately Walberg need more people like Walberg in Washington to stand strong against anti-free enterprise initiatives and policies emanating from the White House, including those involving project labor agreements, taxes, prevailing wage and union card check organizing. held now by Bart Stupak. Benishek, who has never held political office, beat Republican State Sen. Jason Allen in the primary. He’s running to boost job creation in Michigan and foster fiscal responsibility in government. He supports a free market philosophy and a reduction of burdensome regulation and taxation. Benishek also supports expansion of energy resources through nuclear power, coal and oil reserves, increased border security and decreased government bailouts. He calls himself a “career surgeon, not a career politician.” With elections being held in all 15 of Michigan’s congressional districts in November, a Walberg or Benishek victory could tip the balance of power among the state’s delegation to the Republicans. SUPREME COURT The future of the Michigan Supreme Court — and therefore free enterprise in the state — is at stake in the November election. ABC strongly Young encourages votes for incumbent Justice Robert P. www.abcmi.com
Young Jr. and Mary Beth Kelly, now a Wayne County Circuit Court judge. With their election, the court will return to the control of judicial conservatives who will interpret the law, not make it. Two of seven seats on the panel are up for election, and judicial conservatives held both of them until the unexpected August retirement Kelly of Justice Elizabeth Weaver. Her departure allowed Gov. Jennifer Granholm to appoint 4th
District Court of Appeals Judge Alton Thomas Davis, a Democrat from Grayling, to the state’s top court. Weaver’s retirement and Davis’ appointment gave liberal justices a 4-3 majority on the court. Davis will now have the advantage of being identified as an incumbent on the November ballot. Since Supreme Court races don’t garner the publicity that other contests do, many voters have no idea of the judicial philosophy or political background of each candidate. And when in doubt, they tend to vote for the incumbent. Therefore, it’s important for ABC

roposal 1 is a bad choice for Michigan. If adopted, Proposal 1 will create a politically charged convention to rewrite our state constitution. It will cost taxpayers at least $45 million dollars to hold partisan special elections to elect delegates and to conduct the actual convention. That’s $45 million dollars the state won’t have to spend on schools, roads, or public safety. With massive budget shortfalls already projected, spending $45 million tax dollars we can’t afford is irresponsible.
PROPOSAL 1 Will Handcuff the New Leaders If Proposal 1 passes it will put our new governor and legislature on ‘pause’ for two years while the constitutional convention does its work. Rather than working to fix Michigan’s problems and trying to get people back to work, the new leaders we elect this November will be effectively handcuffed and hard-working Michigan families will continue to struggle.
PROPOSAL 1 Will Create More Uncertainty for Michigan A constitutional convention will create even more uncertainty and anxiety for Michigan job providers and schools, universities, and community colleges. Investments, new initiatives, and reforms will be put on hold for at least two years. Can we afford to wait another two years to get Michigan back on track?

PROPOSAL 1 A MICHIGAN CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION ABC has joined with other respected Michigan business organizations in urging voters to reject Proposal 1, a ballot measure that would convene a convention to rewrite the state’s constitution. Even without the prohibitive price tag of $45 million, Michigan can ill-afford to give special interests a chance to rewrite the state constitution. What’s more, Proposal 1 would effectively put Michigan’s economic recovery on hold for two years while the convention does its work. New leaders elected in November will be handcuffed until the constitution is finished, and the uncertainty would scare away businesses looking to expand or locate in the state. To be sure, Michigan government requires significant restructuring. But such change would be better and more efficiently accomplished through executive order or legislation, as opposed to a politically charged constitutional convention.

The races are important to helping put the skids on costly and discriminatory project labor agreements (PLAs) at the universities. With Democrats holding a majority on each governing body, the institutions — among the largest construction users in the state — are increasingly enacting
