YOU WILL FIND, AS YOU LOOK BACK UPON YOUR LIFE, THAT THE MOMENTS WHEN YOU HAVE REALLY LIVED ARE THE MOMENTS WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THINGS IN A SPIRIT OF LOVE. HENRY DRUMMOND

N A GIR L MET A GU Y WHEN A GIRL MET A GU Y WHEN A GI Abby likes to say that they met through a mutual friend; Matt likes to say that she hit on him. It was the end of a hot summer in 2006, and Abby was at Kelly’s, a college bar in Westport and the oldest bar in Kansas City, with a group of her friends. Matt walked through the door with his friends, playing a game where points were awarded for each person you knew in the bar. Right away, a friend of Matt pointed Abby out since they had Spanish class together at UMKC and scored a point.

“ I THINKR E A LLY CU TE .” YOU’RE

The night progressed, and Abby was starting to get followed by a random boy in the bar. Literally followed to the bar, back to her table, and back to the bar again, it seemed no polite excuse was going to get rid of that guy! She looked up in frustration and met eyes with Matt from across the noisy room. Now, a crucial part of this story is that Matt looks exactly like a boy from Abby’s hometown (he gets mistaken for him every time they visit); it’s a boy she grew up thinking was absolutely gorgeous. Immediately Abby thought he was that guy, got really excited, and made her escape. As she got closer, Abby realized he wasn’t the boy she knew but an even more handsome one. Attempting to make it look like she was with him in order to fool the guy who had been following her, Abby snuck up behind Matt, squeezed him on the hips, and said, “I think you’re really cute.” Matt was dumbfounded and speechless, and she got really nervous and tried to walk away. At that moment, Matt’s friend who pointed Abby out earlier in the night, yelled her name and pulled her into the group. Abby had absolutely no idea what to do with the situation she was in. All she could think was “Shoot, I just hit on your friend; this is so embarassing!” Matt and Abby ended up talking the entire night, laughing about what she had done and having one of the best nights of their lives. Abby can remember as they walked down the street, Matt twirled her, she laughed, and he told her that she was really fun. They smiled at each other and have been together ever since.

On November 20th, it was a beautiful Saturday, and Matt had an entire “date day” planned. After sleeping in, Matt cleaned the house, telling Abby he wanted her to relax and enjoy the day. Then he sent Abby off for a massage, which was absolutely fantastic and long overdue. Next, he took her shopping for a dress to wear to dinner that evening. As they walked to the store, Abby joked about getting engaged, and Matt proceeded to tell her that any time she brought up marriage that it would add on 3 years to when he finally proposed. That definitely kept Abby quiet! They went back to their apartment to get ready and walked to dinner at the Grand Street Café. Once Abby and Matt sat down, they ordered their dinner and started talking. Matt was incredibly chatty, and they talked like they were on a first date all over again—so excited and so interested in the person sitting across the table. Dinner was absolutely delicious, and the whole day was turning out perfectly! They sat for a second after the waiter took their plates (Matt’s cue), and Abby reached across the table and grabbed his hand. He started to squeeze it so hard that she even said, “Why are you squeezing my hand so hard?” He replied, “I don’t know!” Finally Matt took a deep breath, and said, “I know what would make your night—to get engaged, but...” And she cut him off. Abby told him not to worry about it, that she could wait and it will just ruin the night if they talked about it right now. He looked at her and said, “Well...” and stood up. Now they have been jokingly proposing to each other for a long time; so she thought this was what he was doing and started to get mad at him, telling him to sit down. He kept moving toward her, reaching into his pocket. Abby proceeded to say “Shut up! Shut up!” and as he got down on one knee, she just started to cry.

Abby doesn’t remember what he said; she just remembers crying and hugging him. Finally she gets to marry the man of her dreams! The man at the table behind Matt began to pat him on the back and the whole restaurant applauded. It was incredible! The waiter brought a bottle of champagne, and Abby’s first thought was to call her mom. She didn’t answer, and Abby was so disappointed, not knowing who to call to spill the news—she just wanted to talk to her mom. At this point Matt got the bill, had the champagne wrapped and wanted to head back to the apartment to change. Abby was ready to go out and celebrate and thought he should stay handsome in his suit. Finally he talked her into at least dropping off his suit coat and then going out. She agreed and they walked back, hand in hand, overwhelmed with happiness. They reached their door, and Abby still couldn’t believe her mom didn’t answer. She was so sad and said to Matt, “I just wished my mom would have answered...” He looked at her and said, “I don’t think you are going to worry about that.” As he spoke, he opened the door and waiting inside was her entire family and his parents for a surprise engagement party. Abby began to cry again! She still can’t believe it. Not only did he surprise her with the proposal but also by having the entire family there to share in the excitement and celebration, something that means more to her than anyone will ever know. Abby later found out that he had been planning this with her family for months and had met with them earlier that day as they were checking into the hotel while she was getting the massage. It seemed everyone, even her friends from home knew for a long time! Abby’s little sister even said,” it was so cool to know without you knowing when you were going to be experiencing the best day of your life so far!” This is going to be their best adventure yet!

THERE IS ONE FRIEND IN THE LIFE OF EACH OF US WHO SEEMS NOT A SEPARATE PERSON, HOWEVER DEAR AND BELOVED, BUT AN EXPANSION, AN INTERPRETATION OF ONE’S SELF, THE VERY MEANING OF ONE’S SOUL.

SOME PEOPLE COME INTO OUR LIVES AND QUICKLY GO. SOME PEOPLE MOVE OUR SOULS TO DANCE. THEY AWAKEN US TO A NEW UNDERSTANDING WITH THE PASSING WHISPER OF THEIR WISDOM. SOME PEOPLE MAKE THE SKY MORE BEAUTIFUL TO GAZE UPON. THEY STAY IN OUR LIVES FOR AWHILE, LEAVE FOOTPRINTS ON OUR HEARTS, AND WE ARE NEVER, EVER THE SAME.
