Studio Brief

The aim of Studio is to learn intervention in a Heritage Context and design Heritage Interpretation centre at Panchkuva Darwaja. It begins with the heritage walk of the Ahmedabad. The narrative of Heritage Interpretation Centre is derived through experience of heritage walk which is translated into a physical form. Design process began with understanding the city’s history, historic context and architecture. The case study of related architectural projects, lectures sharpens the

concepts and increase knowlege of the architectural heritage. At the first stage narrative is translated into explorations of a massing models(intervention). The massing models are evolved considering the the spatial distribution, circulation, experience, narrative. Then storyboard helps to visualize the internal spatial expereince.of a space. Then design is devloped into a plan and sections- conceptual drawings. The conceptual drawings evolves on the basis of the narrative, experience, cirulation, site

context, material, design language and detail. Then design is resolved considering the structural system of heritage building. The each space is detailed using the refrences. The detail space design considers all the previlous aspects along with the material, design language, response to heritage. This design is communicated through detail renders.


Heritage Interpretation Centre ‘Heritage is the inheritance of tangible and intangible resources which are historically and culturally important that are worthy of preservation. Tangible heritage includes movable and immovable heritage. Tangible movable heritage includes the museums collections, industrial items, artworks. Natural tangible heritage includes fossils, archaeological items etc. Tangible immovable heritage includes, monuments, architectural works, cultural landscapes etc. Intangible heritage includes the local/oral traditions, languages, crafts, festivals, performing arts etc. Tangible and intangible heritage both balance each other. It becomes more interesting when heritage is seen with respect to the specific community, religion, local context, and natural environment. Heritage is not similar to history, but it is a celebration of the past in the present Everything which is old, is not the heritage, but anything can become heritage. Heritage passes through the process of heritage formation, recognition, designation, interpretation and loss. Interpretation is essential to increase the awareness about that place, especially when its designation is by the authority and not by community groups. Heritage formation causes due to obsolescence, survival, rarity value, artistic creativity, association. After this item becomes heritage when it is recognized through study and research on it. Then recognition is followed by the designation of the item by a specific authority. Designation is essential for establishing its importance in the community and region. Thereafter it is conserved or preserved which includes debate on that topic. Finally it’s interpretation is essential to increase the awareness about that place, especially when its designation is by the authority and not by community groups. Interpretation is the act of explaining the specific subject to others. Various ways adopted for communicating to the public are guided walks, talks, seminars, displays, sign labels, artworks, audio-visual media, exhibitions. This process enriches the visitor experience by helping them to understand the significance of that place by connecting it to their own lives. Interpretation techniques include spatial experience, installation, information panels, murals, artworks, information plaque, overlay.

Existing Site Plan The existing site has two types of architectural heritage. Fort wall-gate, Amritvarshini vav represents traditional architecture whreas existing building represents colonial architecture. Amritvarshini vav was built in 1723 A.D.

Fort gate, vav is built up of traditional sandstone. Fort wall and colonial building is built of traditional exposed brick work. The existing colonial building is two floor and intervention is the 50% of exsting built mass.

Narrative Building Narrative- Experience of Natural Light in Traditional Architecture of Ahmedabad The aim of heritage walk was to choose a particular theme for designing a heritage interpretation centre on the basis of experience. The natural light defines characteristics of a space. It depends on factors such as position of opening, size of opening, porosity of membrane and other architectural elements in relations with each other. Kharakuva ni pol

Light in space can create focus, affects its sclae-volume, guide movements, define it and multiplies experience of a space. In response to Ahmedabad’s hot climate narrow long pol recieves light through a higher angle with the ground plane which keeps pol shaded throughout the day. The pol houses recieces light only through openings on facade and courtyard. Dark spaces in pol defines space as private, secure. The composition of form, space and order generates play of light and shadow.

Narrative The courtyards in the space acts as a architectural voids which is a major component for a light and ventilation. The different types of courtyards in traditional architecture are chowks in pols,private courtyards of houses. Bright lighted spaces becomes active with public gatherings, different activities. The different intensity of light defines spaces as a public,semi-public, private, semi-private in combination with open, semi-open, closed space. The white light is composition of seven colours, but with use of basic colours it agains divides into different colour pallete. The use of jaali divides single beam of light into a different parts and creates a shadow pattern.

Design Decisions The material palette and interiors of the heritage interpretation centre is based on language of modernism, colonial, traditional architectural heritage. The modernism part has an exposed brick work, exposed roof structure, double volume space, uniform undivided space which interprets the minimal design of modernism. Uniform north light and shaded through south light makes the interiors uniformly lighted. The souvenir shops interpret the colonial architecture through the use of floral patterns in flooring, it sells the textiles crafts which interpret the textile history of Ahmedabad. The barrel vault uses the Islamic geometric intricate patterns in floorings, ceilings.

The water body and channel in the courtyard interprets the traditional unification of light, water, space in sarkhej roza, jama The light through the stained glass, brick jali, wall colour interprets mosque, vav. the light and colours. The new intervention is surrounded by a water channel on all sides which interprets the drainage system of the pol.

Sculpture-art gallery celebrates the intricate wooden haveli architecture through the wooden, stone sculptures display.

Narrative Evolution From Traditional to Modern Architecture It is the sensitive, positive response to the changing time technology. Traditional architecture uses the heavy ornamentation, different colour interiors, materials as stone, wood, brick. As learned it is the specific response to nature, context, use, requirements, availability of space at that time. But in modern times space is designed considering todays context, function, light, requirement. Modern architecture uses the new(future) materials-concrete, glass.

Modern architecture has characteristics of its volume, asymmetrical compositions, minimalism. Form follows functions, exposed structure, composition of basic shapes and colours, ribbon windows, open plan floor ,less is more.

Case Study Natural Light on CEPT Campus- Modern Architecture The natural light in modern architecture is percieved differently. Here in the staircase space south light is achieved as a single beam due to use of thick deep wall opening. The material pallete of space indicates visual connection due to use of thin metal members and only tread in structural staircase.

Case Study Natural Light at ATMA- Modern Architecture Le corbusier derived five principles of modern architecture. The use of deep reveals, ovehang ledges, shade screens, grand pillar halls is learnt from the vernacular architecture in modern evolved way. Brissoleil are long deep members arranged at a particular angle to cut direct sunlight ,So intensity of light decreases gradually reachng to main space. The exposed structure and single material justifies the maximum possibilities with it and shows pure form of it. ATMA first floor
