T

he Florida Keys is a dream travel destination for many. Part of keeping the island paradise that stretches over one hundred and thirty-seven miles at the top of the tourist destination list in Florida is holding one of the most

annoying distractions of any vacation at a minimum - the bugs. That responsibility rests with the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, located in Monroe County, Florida, hangared at Marathon Airport in Marathon, Florida.

(Continued on page 14)

(Continued from page 13)

History The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) operation started in earnest with several DC-3 aircraft dispersing adulticide around Monroe County, which spans hundreds of small islands in addition to the larger inhabited islands making up the Florida Keys. where the 10% of adulticide is employed, and we’ll go out to specifically control them when needed,” said Chad Huff, Florida Mosquito Control District’s Public Information Officer.

While the Islanders are still with the district, the plan is to phase them out to focus on a 100% rotary fleet for future application needs. The district currently flies over 260 missions a year, based on 2023 statistics,

The whole idea was to standardize the fleet for training and maintenance. It is much easier to deal with one aircraft than three different types. Maintenance-wise, we dealt with three different aircraft and three sets of parts. It was a logistical nightmare. In the future, everybody’s efficient on one aircraft as opposed to three different ones,” said Paul Pignataro, Chief Pilot at FKMCD. “The H125 is a fantastic aircraft. It’s blown the Longangers out of the water with the amount of product it can carry. There are days when the pilot will stay in the aircraft, flying for six to eight hours during our busiest periods here. That’s brutal and in the older aircraft. In

After October, the weather calms down, and the rainy season starts, so along with the temperature change, the mosquitoes aren’t growing as fast as they typically are. In addition to the on-site larvicide, the trailers are equipped with onboard fuel storage for several hundred gallons of JET-A fuel, enabling the aircraft to refuel in the field without a return trip to Marathon or another airport within the Florida Keys.

“In the last ten years, we’ve targeted precision larviciding. When I first started, we started using helicopters. Once we realized this could have a significant effect and impact on mosquitoes, this was the direction that we wanted to go. We had to figure out what machine we could use that could do Everything we needed to do, whether it was adulticiding, liquid larviciding, or granular larviciding; the aircraft had enough capacity to do all three. And because of that capacity with the newer aircraft, we

“Where we would like to end up is to have four aircraft. That way, we don’t have to worry about pilots being able to go from airplane to rotorcraft. So we are thinking about overall efficiency. One of our biggest concerns is mosquito-borne diseases; we see Dengue fever. Chikungunya was up in South Florida, and Zika was in South Florida. So, what we do here makes a significant impact on public health. Responding immediately when we see

As some agencies still struggle with which aircraft suits their requirements the best, the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District has set its sights on a modern aircraft fleet and innovative field delivery methods that benefit the residents and visitors to the area alike and seem to have established themselves in the right direction to be future-proofed for a long time to come in the world of aerial application.

Once the aircraft is cleaned, sealant can be sprayed on quickly, wiped with a microfiber towel into the paint, and immediately put back to work. Sealants provide a deeper shine than traditional waxes. This type of protection works well with clear coat and single-stage paint.

Conclusion Protecting your paint is essential for maintaining its value, appearance, and time. Whether you opt for traditional waxing, advanced sealants, ceramic coatings, or paint protection films, each option offers varying levels of protection and durability. Consider your budget, desired longevity, company size, and best maintenance schedule. Weekly cleaning and maintaining your paint aircraft will ensure that shine

nanotechnology creates a molecular bond with the substrate forming a thin, almost zero-weight layer over the paint that is much stronger than traditional waxes and sealants. Due to ceramic coatings creating a flat layer molecularly over the paint, cleaning is significantly reduced. Decreased surface tension leads to the substrate collecting or holding much less contamination and can last for years rather than weeks. Ceramic coatings come with a drawback as most are required to be installed by professional detailing companies that must attend certification and

Well, that’s just great! But what on earth does it mean to individuals or small operators? It wasn’t so long ago the term RM would draw a blank stare and a quizzical look. Risk Management program developed by the Canadian

Even though I was an industry greenhorn then, I thought there had to be a better way, and thank goodness, there was and is. Interestingly enough, at the same time, there was a very noticeable change in the guard, from the cavalier attitude towards safety exhibited by a few like the fellow mentioned above to a more studied approach to the tenets of flight safety. An evolving part of this change has been introducing a formal approach to managing day-to-day risks. The basic concept of risk management (RM) is defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as the identification, analysis, and elimination (and/ or mitigation to an acceptable or tolerable level) of

30 | agairupdate.com

Air Force, which is based upon a statistical analysis of a particular situation. For example, if a flight were at night in a new airport with poor visibility and an inexperienced crew at the controls, each element would be assessed a specific numerical value. The trip would be canceled if the combined total was high enough – suggesting it would be beyond safe operating limits. It was just a matter of crunching the numbers. Many ag operators already have an informal RM program underway, simply by using common sense and experience to avoid situations that might make for a bad day at the office. I would guess that no operator

with a large turbine aircraft would allow it to be flown by someone who had just completed an ag aviation course and had no prior ag experience. The same goes for the many decisions that are part and parcel of daily operations. Are the winds too high for effective applications? Are atmospheric conditions conducive to inversions with the risk of off-target drift? Can I reduce the gallons/acre applied so that more

The FAA’s Risk Management Handbook 2022 is an excellent source of guidance on the topic, covering theory, procedures, and techniques. At the root of effective RM is the development of sound decision-making skills. Each trip should be based on two questions: will it be safe, and will it be effective? If the answer to both is not an immediate “Yes!” the trip should be postponed until conditions improve. When you’re right, no one remembers. When you’re wrong, no one

When the engine is split to perform the hot section inspection, one of the first tasks is to measure the compressor turbine blade tip clearance. Tip clearance is one of the critical areas for efficiency. On a PT6A34AG, for example, the median average tip clearance

only to discover that the compressor has issues and the engine must be removed. What if you find out that the gearboxes are making metal? Perhaps distress in your hot section is being caused by a fuel nozzle issue? Proper inspection of all parts and fulfilling all inspection criteria are essential when it comes to hot section inspection. I touched on some of the things done during your hot section inspection. Just remember it is more than a split,

and peek at the parts. We want to ensure the engine is safe for the operator and can be operated fully when needed. Preventative maintenance and inspections are also a way to keep costs down. If problems can be detected early and repaired, it is less expensive than replacing parts like a vane ring or turbine blades. Keep a few other things in mind: if you operate a PT6A65AG, a blade inspection needs to be done at 3000 hours. In some other engine models, the PT6A-34AG, for example, requires blade inspection at 5000 hours and includes cutting two blades for metallurgical analysis. Read your maintenance manual so you are aware of any additional inspection criteria that may need attention during the hot section inspection.

However, in 1980, while chatting with other fellow pilots, someone suggested a bet among them to see who managed to attend ag school first. At the time, the only ag school in Brazil was the government-sponsored CENEA (Centro Nacional de Engenharia Agrícola - National Center for Agricultural Engineering), which was free. Still, applicants had to undergo a selection process. This course was mandatory in order to obtain the aerial applicator license, which is

As Rolemberg returned home after this conversation, he received a letter from CENEA asking him to confirm his interest in taking the ag course no later than 15 days. He considered this a “signal from above,” and he promptly confirmed, graduating with the first class of 1980. Then, he and his two brothers, Antônio Vidotti Neto and Gutembergue José Vidotti, founded Viagro Vidotti Agro Aérea Ltda, taking a bank loan to buy a used, early EMB-200 Ipanema with a fixed-pitch prop for the price of one billion cruzeiros, Brazil’s currency at the time. Yes, that’s one billion with a “B”! Those were the sad days of hyperinflation in Brazil.

Initially, Viagro was based in Sertanópolis, state of

This encouraged the brothers, who bought a second EMB-200, which Rolemberg totaled in a crash but walked out unscathed right at the beginning of Viagro’s second season. The lion’s share of JBI’s work is agricultural, about 48% of its total work. They also treat forest land, and the company continues to conduct powerline patrol services and external load transporting. The company treats 410,000 acres a year in 32 states from Maine to Washington state, however most of its work is conducted between Texas and Ohio where they apply to approximately 280,000 acres a year of corn with fungicide, primarily in Iowa, Kentucky, and Ohio. Treasurer Matt Woolard (Arkansas) Matt Woolard of Woolard Flying Service in Corning, Arkansas is NAAA’s 2024 treasurer. He has also served on NAAA’s Communications & PR, Government Relations, Precision Agriculture and Safety & Federal Aviation Regulations Committees. He will chair the NAAA Budget and Finance Committee later this year. Matt’s interest in the aerial application industry started like many other pilots; from seeing planes flying through farm fields. He was born and raised in northeast Arkansas in a farming family and fell in love with the aircraft that treated crops. His father-in-law owned an aerial application flying service and Matt went to work for him in 1997. At first, he worked as a mechanic earning his A&P. He eventually also earned his pilot’s license and began treating crops in 2004. Sadly, shortly after this, his father-in-law began to battle some health issues and Matt began transitioning out of the

Matt’s operation treats around 80,000 acres per year of mostly rice and soybeans. Their busiest part of the season is mid-May to mid-June and his operation employs one full-time pilot and a second part-time pilot. They fly an Air Tractor 802 and 502. Most of their work is fertilizing and the capacity of the AT-802 makes it a necessity to get the large volume of the work done in a timely fashion. When spraying begins to slow down in the fall, Matt gets back to his roots where he helps his younger brother tend to their fourth-generation family farm, which is about 2,600 acres in Clay County, AR and they farm rice, soybeans, and corn. Matt is excited about his new board position, stating, “Being asked to serve as Treasurer is an honor that I am thought of enough by the members to represent the association. I intend to serve to the standards that I would like to see the association represented.” In his role as treasurer, Matt wants to ensure that ag pilots stay safe from uncrewed aircraft. “Many drones are small, and we cannot see them when we are flying; we need to continue to ensure the safety of our pilots from drones as a top priority,” stated Matt “I look forward to championing our industry and being a voice for our industry.”

We love to hear feedback such as Michael’s, and it has been genuinely great both from a personal standpoint of my own but also from Chem-Man’s perspective, seeing everything that Michael has accomplished and achieved. We greatly appreciate Michael allowing us to meet his need for an operational management tool, and we are glad to say that utilizing a product like Chem-Man will enable you to have your cake and eat it, too.

Dr. Carrol Voss to be Enshrined into the National Agricultural Aviation Hall of Fame JANUARY 22, 2024 —

Dr. Carrol Voss, a pioneer in the helicopter aerial application industry will be enshrined into the National Agricultural Aviation Hall of Fame during the 2024 Ag Aviation Expo in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Voss had a background in entomology and aviation and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin. During World War II, he served as a Navy Flight Instructor for flying boats. Inspired by Joe Mashman’s helicopter dusting tests in 1946, Voss obtained his helicopter pilot’s license in 1949. After a decade of working in helicopters and agriculture, Dr. Voss established his own

business, “Ag Rotors,” in 1958. While not the first to apply materials with helicopters, he significantly refined pesticide application through testing various nozzles on specific pests. Voss applied seeds with helicopters using an external sling bucket and was an early advocate and operator for frost control with helicopters. Ag Rotors ran a flight school, training about 100 pilots annually, including those transitioning from military service, often from the Vietnam War. Dr. Voss played a key role in training helicopter pilots for state police departments. He was a member of

the Helicopter Association International and supported the National Agricultural Aviation Association. In 1983, Dr. Voss authored a paper on helicopter application for Gypsy Moth, addressing environmental concerns and emphasizing organization and communication. Dr. Voss was the first to successfully apply glyphosate to Phragmites test plots in Maryland. He contributed to vector control research globally and received the Sikorsky Humanitarian Service Award for mosquito eradication in New York. Dr. Voss also received the Twirly Birds Les Morris

Award in 1995 and Helicopter Association International’s Bell Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Dr. Voss also served as a consultant with the World Health Organization, assisting in the establishment of aerial application programs in Africa for insect infestations. In addition, he was a consultant for aerial application in South America, India and the former USSR. Overall, Carrol Voss made significant contributions to the helicopter aerial application industry, combining his expertise in entomology and aviation to advance agricultural aviation practices and disease control. Thomas physically touched the body of Christ following His resurrection proving that Jesus’ body was real (John 20:27-28). Christians will have a physical and eternal body in heaven, although not the same type of “physical body” that we have while we’re on this earth.

“The graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many” (Matthew 27:5253). “When Jesus was crucified He went to where the Old Testament believers who died in faith were being held (Isaiah 26:19, 61:1; Ephesians 4:9-10; 1 Peter

earthly body dies our spirit will instantly enter into God’s presence and receive our eternal and heavenly body. We will have a new body that is related to our earthly body in some mystic way and we’re not sure just how but when we get there we will discover what it is. There are many things that God has left for us to know in the future that we cannot know now while we’re still living on this earth. “For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked” (2 Corinthians 5:2-3). As Christians we often ache, are tired and yearn for the next life that this mortal may be swallowed up by that which is immortal, incorruptible, and eternal. When a Christian’s earthly body dies, Christians will not be left “naked”—that is, without a body to live in. “For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life” (2 (Continued on page 74)

Accident Number: CEN23LA197 Location: Gueydan, Louisiana Date: May 22, 2023 Aircraft: GULFSTREAM-SCHWEIZER A/C CORP GULFSTREAM AM G-164B (A1); GULFSTREAM-SCHWEIZER A/C CORP GULFSTREAM AM G- 164D (A2) Injuries: None (A1); None (A2) The two airplanes were conducting agricultural operations at a private airstrip. The pilot of the landing airplane reported that, while airborne, he noticed the departing airplane was being loaded at the tender truck. The pilot of the landing airplane estimated that he would have enough time to land and clear the runway before the departing airplane was finished loading. The pilot of the departing airplane reported that after loading, he positioned his airplane on the runway and began his takeoff roll. Meanwhile, the pilot of the landing airplane touched down in the opposite direction of the departing airplane. The pilot of the landing airplane reported that while he was slowing down on the landing roll, he looked over his airplane’s hopper and noticed the departing airplane rolling toward him. The pilot of the landing airplane attempted to veer out of the way of the departing airplane but was unsuccessful. The left wing of the landing airplane struck the left wing of the departing airplane. The landing airplane sustained substantial damage to both left wings, the fuselage, the horizontal stabilizer, and the elevator. The departing airplane sustained substantial damage to all four wings and the fuselage. Both pilots reported that there were no preimpact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplanes that would have precluded normal operation. Both pilots reported that neither made a radio call announcing their intentions. Probable Cause and Findings — The National

pilot’s decision to takeoff with the airplane overloaded which resulted in the airplane settling and subsequently impacting terrain.

Accident Number: CEN23LA202

Date: May 29, 2023

Location: Wright, Louisiana

Injuries: Minor

Date: May 25, 2023

The pilot reported that on departure, the airplane settled to the ground and struck a levee. The airplane came to rest upside down in a field about 100 feet from the point of impact. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the wings, fuselage, horizontal stabilizer, and vertical stabilizer.

Aircraft: GRUMMAN ACFT ENG CORSCHWEIZER G-164B Injuries: None The pilot reported that before his 12th aerial application flight of the day, the airplane was overloaded with fertilizer due to faulty ground loading equipment. Knowing the airplane was overloaded the pilot decided to dump some of the fertilizer over the grass strip during takeoff. As the airplane reached the point on the grass strip that he felt he could safely stop, the “airplane felt like it was wanting to fly” so he continued the takeoff. As the pilot turned toward the field that he intended to apply the fertilizer to, the airplane settled and impacted in a field. The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings, empennage, and fuselage, and the engine separated from the airframe. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. No Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 certificate was found for the operator and there was no record of a knowledge and skill test for the pilot as required by 14CFR 137.19. Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The

Accident Number: CEN23LA212 Location: Light, Arkansas Aircraft: GRUMMAN ACFT ENG CORSCHWEIZER G-164B

The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The accident occurred shortly after takeoff from a private turf/dirt strip used only for agricultural operations. The pilot reported that the airplane was about 320 pounds below its maximum gross weight of 6,070 lbs., that the density altitude at the time of the accident was about 2,000 feet msl, and that he turned “a little premature” after taking off with a full load of fertilizer. Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot exceeding the climb capability of the airplane during takeoff which led to it settling into the ground.

Accident Number: CEN23LA244 Location: Sturgis, South Dakota Date: June 18, 2023 Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-502

Injuries: None The pilot reported he departed in the airplane with about 660 lbs of fuel and about 3,500 lbs of liquid chemical for application to a pasture. After arriving at the pasture, the chemical dispersal system was malfunctioning, and the pilot decided to return to the airport. During the landing to the first quarter of the runway, the airplane was about 125 mph, with “half flap” applied, and the tailwheel was locked. As the tailwheel touched down on the dry concrete runway, the pilot initiated beta mode with the propeller, and the airplane “started veering to the right.” The pilot assessed that he “reversed the propeller too aggressively and too soon.” The airplane departed the runway to the right, the left main landing gear separated after impacting a ditch, and the airplane came to rest upright on a grass field. The pilot was able to egress from the airplane without further incident. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and the left wing. The operator reported there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe or the engine that would have precluded normal operation. A postaccident examination of the chemical dispersal system found foreign object debris that was likely blocking the flow of the chemical. Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 Agricultural Aircraft Operations does not contain full load landing training and recurrency requirements. The pilot reported the last time he performed a full load landing was about 2 years prior. The estimated density altitude for the airport was 6,101 ft. Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s improper timing to initiate beta mode with the propeller and his failure to maintain directional during the full load landing that resulted in a runway excursion. Contributing to the accident was the pilot’s lack of recent experience with performing a full load landing and the high-density altitude that likely affected aircraft performance during the landing.

However, the planes were and still are known simply as Stearmans and are considered among aviation’s very finest achievements. A Stearman is easy to fly and approaches aerodynamic perfection. In the air it will forgive a few

In 1946, with the War over, thousands of these planes hit the surplus market. Newly released military pilots and old line dusting services began lapping them up at prices ranging from $250 to $875. Many of the planes were in like-new condition with zero-time engines. A few minor problems existed. One was that the aircraft could not be licensed in the civil category

I pushed or pulled at everything in the cockpit, but nothing good happened. Finally I just gave up, turned everything loose, and began recounting all of the mistakes I had made in my short, misspent life. generally known as MV AS, first engaged in custom equipment design in 1946. Some of its products helped bring about the fastest and most profound changes in agricultural aviation. (Continued from page 81) genius originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Berkley Ellis, a skilled pilot from Memphis, Tennessee; and myself, a native Deltan obsessed with airplanes. White took over engineering, maintenance, and manufacture. I was responsible for sales and promotion. Occasionally I walk through the now semi-deserted hangar at Fletcher Field that housed this bustling operation, but only occasionally. There are too many ghosts around. The frenetic activity of the 1940s and 1950s can no longer be seen and the long line of shops that ran down both sides of a 360-foot hangar are empty and deserted. In places, the ceiling is falling in and all of the massive metal and woodworking equipment that ran almost continuously has long ago disappeared. Gone too are the forty or more mechanics and helpers who for years built and installed the most modem and sophisticated dispensing equipment in those beautiful biplanes. Gone also are the long lines of maroon and blue Stearmans that were a trademark of the firm’s custom application division. Memories die hard, especially those that spring from a time in life when youthful enthusiasm and unlimited optimism made all things seem easily attainable. 82 | agairupdate.com
