> TREE STRUCTURE canopy for the WestendGate tower complex in Frankfurt under construction period: 2008-10 GFA: 1200m2 construction cost: 1 Mio Euro

The canopy has being developed as a tree- structure geometry, produced by an algorithm. The generated complex geometry has been optimized through a digital iterative process, aiming to achieve minimal steal consumption. As a result of this process a double curved tree structure mesh occurred, which is being put together by differentiated singular units. The roof structure will be covered by pneumatic ETFE membrane cushions, a very light and flexible material, capable to adopt to double curved surfaces. The canopy covers an area of 1200sqm and reaches a total height of 14 meters. It will provide shelter to the outdoor activities of the WetendGate tower.

> (SHELF SHADING) PRISM Municipal Library in the town of Chalastra, Greece period: 2009-11 area: 450m2 construction cost: 700.000 Euro

This project focuses in green design parameters, aiming to produce a building with optimal shading and air circulation behavior. The libraries volume is being conceived as a shelf shading prism, shaped according to solar attributes and geographic location of the site. Thus, big openings are made possible enabling ideal lighting conditions without unwanted overheating during the hot summer months or extreme cooling in the winter. The integrated roof windows allow hot air to abandon the building in the summer, while the proposed winter garden loggia offers additional thermal energy in the sunny winter days.

> WHITE CHAPEL family chapel on Kea island, Cyclades, Greece, in planing process period: 2009-2010 GFA: 6m2 engineer : Viktor Wilhelm

The private chapel evolves as reconciliation between traditional Greek and Arabic typological and morphological elements, parameters set by the chapel’s location and the origins and wishes of the landlords. Vault and cupola are being merged together into a vault-cupola morphed shell, which becomes structure and space at the same time. The perforated wall structure allows shadow - light effects to emerge. The structural system can be described as a reinforced concrete shell. The formwork of the double curved shell is being analyzed in cross and longitudinal sections, which will be used in order to create a mold for the concrete roof.

> GREEN CARPET office renovation in Thessaloniki period: 2006 GFA: 120m² construction cost: 6.000â‚Ź

In any working space, communication between collaborators and clients plays a vital role to ensure the survival of companies or offices. In the following project, the color green is used as a basic parameter to improve and stimulate the communication in a small company in Thessalonica, Greece.

‘Green is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money. Green has great healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. In heraldry, green indicates growth and hope. Green, as opposed to red, means safety; it is the color of free passage in road traffic.´

> 3D ORNAMENT installation for Thessalonikis 1st art biennale period: 2006-2007 installation cost: 700 Euro

The creation of the existing project was based on the following parameters: 1. The Heterotopia of the Turkish bath set as a starting point: ornamental decoration embedding geometry, repetition, spatial continuity between walls, floor and ceiling. Water being the dominating element introduces the notion of transformation: liquid, steam and crystal structure. 2. The work of Vaso Gavaise which seems to emphasize on similar issues: geometry, repetition and transformation. 3. The city of the 2.000.000 introduces scale and urban organization structures. The upper named parameters are being instrumentalized in a form defining mechanism, which transforms the rhombic grid taken as a starting point from a plane into volume, from volume into surface from detail into urban structure.

THIS BOOK examines the possibilities emerging for design and architecture by the influence of novel computer aided design and digital manufacturing tools and techniques. The studies shown here are focusing in the realisation of the digitally conceived structures into 1/1 physical prototypes. Thus, an index of insights concerning manufacturing techniques in association with structure, material, detailing and design arose. The used structural techniques are divided in five categories, which are emphasized trough out the books formation: cross segmentation, accumulation, frameworks, loops and foldings. Generative CAD tools, algorithms and scripting applications where not only used as design components, but also as devices which helped to rationalise and systematize the production process of complex geometries.
