EditorsLetter Welcome to Our April Magazine Last month we said we would publish more activities for your children at Casey & Cardinia Libraries, unfortunately due to COVID -19 Virus these programs were suspended at the time of going to print - please see What’s On page 25. Again we are unable tp publish ANZAC DAY SERVICES for the same reason - see page 25. After being so proud of the Aussie spirit during the bush fires and floods, how disappointing that it has gone missing. Just when we should all be standing together and looking out for our neighbours and friends, especially the elderly, we have become a selfish society. Panic buying is not the Aussie way, we have always looked after one another, I for one was shopping this week for a normal shop and truly what I saw made me embarrassed to be Australian, people grabbing packets of rice, plus meat, bundling it into their shopping trolley like the world was going to end. Waiting at the storeroom door for paper towel ready to pounce. Australia manufactures toilet paper, paper towels and tissues, pasta is made here and our meat is grown here oh.. so is rice! WHY panic buy? All you are doing is depriving your family, friends and neighbours of their share, please stop and think what you are doing. I remarked to a lady in the shops ‘How would these people survive a war and rations’? She just shook her head in dismay. This is not the Australia I grew up in, where you shared with the people who needed it most. Please consider others and only buy what you need. Personally if I was going to panic buy, wine and chocolate would be top of my list. Lets all stay calm and enjoy a Happy Easter with family and friends. Best wishes for a great month and stay safe,

Glenda Long Editor

Souping V Juicing There is currently a debate around the health benefits of juice versus soup. In many ways, souping isn't all that different from juicing. There's no magic to either of these regimens. In a side-by-side comparison, souping offers a few advantages to the more commonplace juice cleanse. Soups contain whole vegetables, either in chopped or pureed form, so they retain the health-promoting fibre that gets stripped away when fruits and vegetables are processed through a juicer. That's a major plus, since fibre is one of produce's most important assets. Juices a l s o te n d to b e heavier on fruit than vegetables, which can add up to sugar overload when all that fruit is concentrated in liquid form. For me, I am loyal to soup. Soup is that rarest of foods, a true comfort food that fills you up and helps to you to stay at a healthy weight. Brisk mornings and cool nights- not to mention the increased need to stay healthy in the cooler season- we start thinking about healthy warming comfort foods. Soup is a quick, hot meal that offers plenty of health benefits. You can throw a variety of ingredients into a slow cooker in the morning before you leave for work or school and return home to a delicious meal in the evening. It'll be love at first slurp when you serve up these tasty bowlfuls.

6

by Irene Goonan The healthiest soups include fresh, low-fat ingredients and a minimum of salt. I am a great believer in eating in season and the cooler months bring an amazing range of vegetables that can be used in soups. And don't forget to add some lentils. Lentils are a staple in Middle Eastern and Indian cooking and make a thick, rich and delicious soup. They're also a good source of fibre and magnesium and the quickest legume to cook. On a cold night, a filling lentil soup is perfect nourishment for warming body and soul. The warmth adds to the filling effect, and you can increase the warming effect by adding chillies and spices to home-made soups. And a n o t h e r benefit of soup is that it can be cheap and easy to make. It can sometimes be hard to get children to eat soup so don't forget the presentation- a fancy teacup and matching saucer. A smaller serve is less intimidating. Most youngsters don't like chunks so pureeing it smooth make is easier for them to enjoy. And don't forget to make it a fun experience- serving it with toasted cheese 'soldiers'- always a favourite. So, keep your loved ones healthy and happy on cold winter days, soup is a hug in a bowl Irene Goonan www.tunstallsquareshops.com.au

The POWER of ME School pick up time… Easily my favourite time of the day! I'm ready. I have my healthy after school snacks packed neatly inside my bag (and a little treat too). I have my work day packed away neatly inside a compartment in my mind, not to be opened until tomorrow. I have the afternoon clear at home, so my daughter and I can have unlimited quality time to share all of the fun and excitement of her first day of Year 3! My eyes scan for her among the sea of children swarming out of school. I search for her long brown plaits, the 'half-skip, half-bounce' that she does when she's bounding out of school with her friends, and the sunny smile that lights up her whole face. Then I see her friends, but she's not with them like she usually is. Then I see her. She is walking alone. I know instantly that something is not right. Her shoulders are slumped; she drags her feet; she stares at the ground. When she finally looks up at me, her big brown eyes shine with tears and she erupts into heartfelt sobs as soon as we are in the privacy of our car. Day after day, this becomes the new 'normal’. Something is wrong. But she can't seem to tell me how she's feeling; she can't seem to put it into words. When she does share things, they come out in a big jumble, like mixed up puzzle pieces that don't fit together, no matter which way you turn them…“I wish I was in another class. I don't understand maths. Things aren't the same this year. I'm bad at sport. I don't want a birthday 8

party. What if my friends don't like me anymore?” We try the same old family bag of tricks to try and cheer her up, but even my husband's 'dad jokes' don't work like they used to. She's lost the power to feel good about herself. Somehow I need to find a way to help her get it back..

As our children grow older, they begin to experience the roller coaster of ups and downs that is called 'real life'. Sometimes things don't go well, sometimes things are tough, and sometimes people aren't nice to you. That's the reality. It's especially hard at the beginning of the school year, when classes change, friendships change, and everything feels so much more complicated. As our children grow up, we wish we could keep solving all their issues for them (just like we did when they were little and a Mickey Mouse band aid solved everything), but we can't. Instead, we need to help them find a way to express their feelings and to find their own power to make themselves feel better when they are challenged by life's twists and turns. You and your child can start by imagining that you have a 'Ball of Power' inside you, which reflects how you are feeling about yourself. When you feel happy and confident, your Ball of Power is big and full, glowing golden and bright, shining through in everything that you do. But when you feel miserable and negative, your Ball of Power deflates like a balloon that has been popped with a pin, taking away the positive light that shines through your mind and body.

Helping kids to own their power..... By talking about the Ball of Power with your child every day to refer to how you are feeling, you will model the use of this concept with your child. It's as simple as saying: “My Ball of Power was so full today when my boss told me I did a great job!”; or “when I found out I wasn't invited to that party, my Ball of Power became flat and squashed”. The Ball of Power is an accessible way for children to open up the (often confronting) conversation about feelings, without having to find the specific words to describe them. When your child recognises that they are feeling down and deflated, they can learn to equip themselves with strategies to 'blow up' their Ball of Power. Work with your child to identify what is great about being the person that they are! What are their special qualities? What are their strengths? What are their unique differences? What makes them feel happy? Safe? Confident? Proud? Encourage your child to write it down, talk about it with you, and draw their own Ball of Power containing all of the 'puffs of positivity' which blow it up and keep it full. In this way, your child learns how to value themselves and own their own power. Their mind and their imagination is the limitless key to their selfempowerment. M a k i n g a re g u l a r p ra c t i c e o f t h e s e empowerment strategies is vital to your child developing a strong sense of self-worth and a resilient mindset. Even when things don't go so well, they have a way of building themselves up again, reminding themselves to value the special person that they are!

by Andrea Brown School pick up time… First day of Year 4. As she walks towards the car, I notice something I haven't seen in a long time. Her shoulders are slumped; she drags her feet; she stares at the ground. When she finally looks up at me, her big brown eyes shine with tears. When she climbs into the car, she gives me a watery smile. “My Ball of Power is well and truly flat mum”, she whispers. I give her a big hug. Now, I know what to do. I know how I can help her. I know how she can help herself.

A Childs’ Her hair was up in a pony tail, Her favorite dress tied with a bow. Today was Daddy's Day at school, And she couldn't wait to go.

‘Where's her daddy at?' She heard a boy call out 'She probably doesn't have one,' Another student dared to shout.

But her mummy tried to tell her, That she probably should stay home. Why the kids might not understand, If she went to school alone.

And from somewhere near the back, She heard a daddy say, 'Looks like another deadbeat dad, too busy to waste his day.'

But she was not afraid; She knew just what to say. What to tell her classmates Of why he wasn't there today.

The words did not offend her, As she smiled up at her Mum. And looked back at her teacher, Who told her to go on.

But still her mother worried, For her to face this day alone. And that was why once again, She tried to keep her daughter home.

And with hands behind her back, Slowly she began to speak. And out from the mouth of a child, Came words incredibly unique.

But the little girl went to school Eager to tell them all. About a dad she never sees A dad who never calls.

My Daddy couldn't be here, Because he lives so far away. But I know he wishes he could be, Since this is such a special day.

There were daddies along the wall in back, For everyone to meet. Children squirming impatiently, Anxious in their seats

And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know. All about my daddy, And how much he loves me so.

One by one the teacher called A student from the class. To introduce their daddy, As seconds slowly passed.

He loved to tell me stories He taught me to ride my bike. He surprised me with pink roses, And taught me to fly a kite.

At last the teacher called her name, Every child turned to stare. Each of them was searching, A man who wasn't there.

We used to share fudge sundaes, And ice cream in a cone. And though you cannot see him. I'm not standing here alone.

Story 'Cause my daddy's always with me, Even though we are apart I know because he told me, He'll forever be in my heart'

And to her mother's amazement, She witnessed with surprise. A room full of daddies and children, All starting to close their eyes.

With that, her little hand reached up, And lay across her chest. Feeling her own heartbeat, Beneath her favorite dress.

Who knows what they saw before them, Who knows what they felt inside. Perhaps for merely a second, They saw him at her side.

From somewhere here in the crowd of dads, Her mother stood in tears. Proudly watching her daughter, Who was wise beyond her years.

I know you're with me Daddy,' To the silence she called out. And what happened next made believers, Of those once filled with doubt.

For she stood up for the love Of a man not in her life. Doing what was best for her, Doing what was right.

Not one in that room could explain it, For each of their eyes had been closed. But there on the desk beside her, Was a fragrant long-stemmed rose.

And when she dropped her hand back down, Staring straight into the crowd. She finished with a voice so soft, But its message clear and loud.

And a child was blessed, if only for a moment, By the love of her shining star. And given the gift of believing

'I love my daddy very much, he's my shining star. And if he could, he'd be here, But heaven's just too far. You see, he was an Aussie soldier And died, just this past year When a roadside bomb hit his convoy And taught Australians to fear. But sometimes when I close my eyes, it's like he never went away.' And then she closed her eyes, And saw him there that day. To advertise in Your Child in Casey & Cardinia call 1300 657 996

Thinking of a Pet The reason 80% of rabbits surrendered to rescue is because the rabbit was purchased for a child! With parent frequently saying 'The child will not look after it, the child has lost interest' Young children can lose interest within a week of purchase, with older children it is often when they reach their teenage years and want to spend time pursuing hobbies and friends. Experience has shown that the attention span of the child with a rabbit is fleetingly short. Your child may want a rabbit now, but will they still want the rabbit for the next 10 to 12 years? The answer in most cases is 'No', the novelty wears off and they want a cat or dog that is more interactive. A family needs to consider what type of animal will best suit their lifestyle for the next 10 years. It is the parent's responsibility to teach their children about commitment to the welfare of the animal that will join their home as this animal is reliant on them for survival. Rabbits can make fantastic house pets for the family and can live up to 12 years. Rabbits come with a long list of responsibilities and commitments that need to be considered. Rabbit Reality Check Unlike cats and dogs, rabbits are prey animals. Ÿ If a rabbit is afraid or nervous their instinct is a flight or fight (bite) response to protect themselves. Ÿ They do not like to be picked up, which they associate with a predator getting them. Ÿ They can scrabble and scratch to get away. Ÿ They grow quickly and develop their temperaments by 3 to 6 months. Ÿ They are not suited to families with children under 8 years old. Ÿ

18

Ÿ

Ÿ

Ÿ Ÿ

Ÿ

The pet rabbit m u s t always be protected f r o m predator animals. They have sensitive health needs: for example, if the rabbit will not eat, it is an emergency, and will die quickly without vet intervention. They need a responsible adult as the primary carer to monitor their health and well-being. If you have dogs and young children, it is not a safe environment for a rabbit, as doors can be left open and the rabbit is at risk of predator attack. A rabbit should never be left outside unsupervised, there is a high risk of escape or being attacked and killed by predator animals.

Child Reality Check Ÿ Children are not adults and do not have the

maturity to be responsible for another living creature. If you would not trust your child to take care of a baby, you cannot trust your child to take care of a rabbit. Ÿ Rabbits require careful handling and care and children do not always understand this, which is why it is important to consider your child's temperament before bringing a rabbit into your home.

Rabbit this Easter? Children can sometimes be unpredictable and can create a chaotic and noisy environment that is ill suited for a rabbit to live in. Ÿ While there are children out there who have amazing empathy and care for animals, there is still the underlying factor that children are not yet mature. Ÿ The responsibility of owning and taking care of a rabbit or any other animal takes commitment from a responsible adult. If the rabbit is not monitored daily for health, it can die quickly, leaving a child traumatized Ÿ

Easter, why not consider a range of rabbit toys, such as interactive 'fur-real friends', 'little live pets' or the range of rabbit books or films. There are clothes with bunny motifs, bunny slippers, onesies and caps, or even a chocolate bunny or a big soft fluffy toy bunny. If you would like to find out more about rabbits as house pets, then you are welcome to visit a rabbit rescue with or without the family to be adequatelyinformed.

Rabbits may be cute and fluffy, but they're not the same as a soft toy that can be put away when the child is finished playing with it. So, if you're searching for a present for your child this

Encourage your child to explore

P

arents and teachers are always looking for activities to support their children to explore and learn– at home and in school. Here are some sensory activities for kids that incorporate colour, smell, sound, and textures to give your child a sensory experience, while improving their motor skills. 1. Collect sand in a bucket so your child can play with different textures. Get creative with it. Add toys. Build a sandcastle. Pretend you're at the beach or go to a beach. Use coloured sand. You can even try using water for a different experience. 2. Play with Play-DohŽ. They can build anything they want. Use cookie cutters to make new shapes or a rolling pin to flatten it down. The only limit is imagination. 3. Kids love being creative and artistic. Crayons, pencils, paint brushes and chalk are available in different shapes and sizes to help children be able to hold them easily. Even painting plain water on a footpath or fence is fun and dries with no mess. 4. Put on a puppet show! This can be done with sock puppets, finger puppets or toys. Your child will want to put on a puppet show too. This then leads into creating more puppets. For extra production value, try incorporating a cardboard box as the stage. 5. Play music. Either through headphones or a speaker. Your child may wish to dance along so dance with them. 6. Need quiet time? No problem. A blanket thrown over furniture can make a handy tent where quiet play can occur in the dark or a torch can help make shadow puppets. Building and 22 24

packing up the tent is a great gross motor skill to practice. 7. Create a shredded flower bouquet. This activity involves ripping and shredding of paper to create a beautiful composition. Kids will love the touch of handling paper and playing with shapes and colours. Just rip some 'petals' and paste them on a piece of paper. 8. Sing together or sing to them. Be creative and give them something to sing into to act like a microphone. Time to get those lungs working. 9. Set up a mini bowling game. Use toys or paper towel tubes, anything that stands on its own and easy to knock over to act as the pins. Give them something to roll and watch them have a ball. This is a great way to improve motor skills such as hand-eye coordination, aiming and actions such as swinging. 10. Another fun, hand-eye coordination activity is playing catch. All you need is a ball and your hands. Balls with bells or lights are easier to see and those that are light and soft are easier to catch. 11. Bring them into the kitchen to help you cook or do other activities. This all depends on what you are making and how interested your child is.

& learn creative sensory activities If there is dough involved, get your child to knead and roll it. Alternatively, give them a spatula and a plastic bowl and have them mimic the actions you're making. 12. Invite family or friends over. Your child may want social interaction and may want to participate in some of the other child's favourite activities.

Article Suppled by SCOPE You know your child the best and depending on your child's abilities and personality, different activities may or may not be ideal. Sometimes the simplest ideas work the best. Try some of these ideas, be creative and have fun!

13. Another sport related activity could be shooting hoops. Go down to an activity centre or gym and you're ready to play. 14. Give them a camera to play with. They will enjoy taking photos of you, the environment, or their favourite things. When finished it's fun to view the photos together.

Help stop the spread After having fun running around the playground touching everything they can, your children race back to you, arms held wide open. Instinctively you reach into your bag and grab a bottle of magic sanitising potion. Parents sanitise their children's hands to get rid of any nasty germs they may have picked up from the play equipment, soil, or animals they may have been touching. This is so they don't get potentially dangerous germs into their mouths, on their skin or transferred to others. This practice helps keep your child and others around them safe from harmful bacteria. As the influenza season approaches, we all need to be aware of germs being transmitted especially with young children in playgrounds, childcare, schools, and other public places. We know from scientific research that killing germs on your hands help stops the spread of nasty bacteria. But when you're out and in the playground, or on public transport it's difficult to find a washroom after every time you touch a potentially unsanitary item. That's why waterless hand sanitisers were developed. How do hand sanitisers kill germs? Gel based hand sanitisers typically contain over 60-95% alcohol as the active ingredient used to kill germs. Alcohol works fast, but it has a couple of side effects such as; being highly dangerous if accidentally consumed by children, and is flammable. Some people find alcohol based sanitisers dries their skin. Additionally, some report that the smell can be unpleasant. New alternative hand sanitisers are now on the market. They are made from 100% natural and 24 24

organic ingredients and use nature's own powerful and effective germ killer - citric acid. With the right formulation of natural supporting ingredients, these natural sansiters are 100% safe to use and contain no harmful ingredients. These sanitisers also moisturise rather than dry out your skin. Natural hand sanitisers often have a neutral or possibly even a slight sweet citrus fragrance. Always read the labels to make sure you know what you are using on your skin, and to be aware of any possible warnings or dangers. Are they effective? Sanitisers must be tested and verified by an independent laboratory. The laboratory tests the effectiveness of the sanitiser against the most common types of bugs and germs such as; Escherischia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes. The laboratory checks the results and verifies the effectiveness of the sansiter. The laboratory will then provide an effectiveness rating which the product label can display. If a product makes a claim that it can kill 99.99% of bacteria; then, they will need to have a laboratory report to back it up. How much is enough? For gel based sanitisers you squeeze about a thumbnail size (2.5ml) onto the hand and rub for at least 15 seconds. If it evaporates before then you have not applied enough. You'll get up to 20 applications from a 50ml bottle. For natural sanitisers you will find a different dispensing system that only requires 1 pump for children or 2 pumps for adults. Because they don't have alcohol, natural hand sanitisers take about a minute to dry. It is actively working until

dry. You will get anywhere between 100 and 200 applications from a 50ml bottle. Not a replacement for Soap and Water! It's important to understand that hand sanitisers are not hand cleaners. This means they don't clean away grease and grime. They are best used as part of a healthy hand-washing routine. Using a hand sanitiser is a good health habit to help keep you and your loved ones exposed to fewer germs. Wherever you are; in the playground, school yard, using other peoples mobile, tablet or laptop, take a moment to apply some sanitiser. It's an easy way to help stop the spread of germs this flu season.
