ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

BROWN FORMAN BEVERAGES: WHERE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND THE LGBT COMMUNITY COMBINE It seems every day there is a new vodka, rum, tequila, and whisky hitting the market. At gay bars and clubs, we are inundated with samples of the latest libation – some of which have gone on to become favorites among our community, others… not so much. A couple of years ago, while partying it up at MOVA, I had the opportunity to meet the South Florida market manager for Brown Forman Beverages, Hernan Valverde. Sitting with a gaggle of hot promo models, Hernan handed me a shot of Herradura Tequila. Now if you ever want to win me over immediately, this is certainly the way to do it! Now if you haven’t seen Brown Forman’s products at your local bar, you must be going to the wrong places, as Hernan has dedicated a countless amount of time and energy on really working with and supporting the LGBT community. You can spot Finlandia Vodka, Herradura Tequila, Chambord, and his latest Chambord Vodka at almost every gay venue in town. And if that were not enough, almost every major LGBT fundraising event in town also features his products. “It is really important to me and my company to really focus on and support the gay community,” explains Hernan. “We have an incredible relationship with the major LGBT organizations here, as well as the different gay bars and restaurants in Miami and around the country.”

Brown Forman Beverages has become the statewide sponsor for all of Equality Florida’s major fundraising galas, providing cocktails for thousands of people at over 13 different galas and events in order to raise funds for the largest statewide LGBT rights organization in Florida. Brown Forman Beverages has also been the liquor sponsor for SummerFest two years in a row, helping the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force raise some much needed funds to continue the great work they do all over the country. They’ve also sponsored the largest HIV/AIDS fundraising event in South Florida, The White Party two years in a row. If that were not enough, they also sponsored the third edition of Miami Beach Gay Pride. Because of their product donation, Miami Beach Gay Pride raised more than $65,000 on the day of Pride! That in and of itself is incredible. “For me, it is not just about making a donation and walking away,” continues Hernan. “I make it a point to build relationships with our community partners, so we can support their causes and events as much as possible. We are not a flash in the pan like so many of these other brands that have come and gone. We are here to stay and will always support my community.” And it is important to point out that Hernan is just one of thousands of employees, who continually support the LGBT community on a regular basis. This $5 billion company is one of

the largest liquor companies in the world, and it is also the only liquor company in the world to have a 100-point rating on the Human Rights Campaign’s Equality Index. They were one of the first major corporations to offer domestic partnership benefits and even healthcare benefits for their transgendered employees, which is absolutely unheard of! As you can see, I am a big supporter of Brown Forman Beverages – not only because Hernan has become a close friend of mine, but also because Brown Forman has truly put their money where their mouth is by supporting so many important causes in our community. Through their support, sponsorships, and donations over the past few years, Brown Forman Beverages has literally helped raise hundreds, if not millions, of dollars for LGBT community organizations all over the state! Who says equality shouldn’t come with a cocktail or two! This week, we have dedicated our cover story to a new gay weekend event in Miami that was actually created by Brown Forman Beverages. Chambord Vodka Weekend will take place this Friday, August 5th to Sunday, August 7th at all of our favorite gay bars and restaurants! I hope you will come out, have a cocktail with me, and support a company that has given back so much to our community! See you on the dance floor!

POST MODERN MEDIA FASCINATION WITH POWER OF GOVERNMENT HINDERS REAL REFORM At least since the Vietnam War (if not much earlier), media’s role in shaping opinions on issues of politics and public policy has been a powerful one, and one which was uncomfortable to many people who understood just what power media could wield. After all, there is reality and then there is how reality is packaged and massproduced for public consumption. But in those early years, media was bound – albeit by itself – to the ideas of being a public service, of having responsibility to the public, of honesty and ethics. As media became more oriented toward profits and became inundated by J-school grads who were inspired to journalism to “change the world,” those old ideas gave way to the rise of today’s media. Elements of that media include the ones most people have heard spoken of – gotcha journalism, freakish celebrity obsessions, and outright bias, even hatred, of anyone who did not agree with the opinions of media members who morphed truth into packages of lies to support their nefarious agenda. However, there is another virus at the nexus of media and politics. The media loves government; worships it; almost to the point of deification. Sure, savvy journalists might decry politicians as a species, but there are always exceptions. And, most importantly, journalists love the systems of government. The more government, the better, which explains journalists’ adoring fascination with the American Left and with “heroes” like Mao, Castro and Chavez.

There are many reasons for this idolatry. Most importantly they see a cause-effect relationship between their own goals with “bettering society” and government action. Journalists report on homelessness; government moves to craft programs to help the homeless; the media assault any voice of dissent; and – voila – journalists feel a sense of satisfaction. They are empowered and justified in finding the next cause to try to prompt government to act, shading and crafting imagery that might or might not have any relation to actual fact. It doesn’t really matter that things like homelessness, poverty, race issues only get worse after the interference of government. Journalists can then claim the higher road in their minds and assert that government still isn’t doing enough for whatever the cause of the day is. This incestuous relationship is the root of the media’s blind, fawning, utterly anti-intellectual worshipping of the Left and journalists’ willingness to outright lie to support Lefty causes. A second reason for media’s love of government is, frankly, covering government is easier than working. Why get out, dig through facts, examine data, and dirty oneself talking to evil private sector people or gross homeless people – when the government is right there to hand you a story. As long as the agendas match up; and since politicians know how to manipulate journalists, the agendas do typically coincide. This dirty little secret occurred to me this week when I saw a Miami Herald columnist supporting the idea that fat

kids belong in foster care. The unintentional irony was overwhelming. After all, this is the same newspaper that for years has reported on the Oliver Twist-esque nature of foster care in Florida. Kids die, kids disappear, kids are abused – and rarely do foster kids ever escape the yoke of dependence, poverty, and crime. But the idea of shiny new expanding of government authority must send a shiver up the leg of many mainstream journalists. Ah, more government to solve problems (*cough*) and make us feel validated! Given the state of Miami-Dade politics, this should be a concern to all residents. Media is going to shape our perceptions of the reform efforts, or at least a good portion of our perceptions. How can we trust the media? Simply, we can’t. Only the public can act as a watchdog to our lousy local governments. Media and the journalists who pollute it are operating on a whole different, selfindulgent agenda. It’s more important than ever to be aware of this as the county endeavors to clean up its image. Because it could get worse. And the media could be leading the way to disaster. Author and journalist Michael W. Sasser’s commentary on all things political appears exclusively in Wire Magazine. WIRE COVER: JESSICA & HUNTER: THE AMAZEBALLS OF CHAMBORD VODKA WEEKEND

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS BY: JONATHAN CLAY HARRIS There’s a new vodka in town, and it is taking over Miami this weekend! That’s right, the delicious new Chambord Vodka is so incredible; it’s getting its own weekend during the Chambord Vodka Weekend ’11. From Friday, August 5 to Sunday, August 7, 2012 the City of Miami will go pink for the newest libation by Brown Forman Beverages, during this brand new weekend festival of dancing, drinking, dining, and entertainment! “The concept of Chambord Vodka Weekend is all about having a great time with great people,” explains Chambord Vodka Weekend founder, Thomas Schneider. “We want everyone who attends to have a big smile and the best of memories at the end of the weekend. A major goal was to keep each event fresh, exciting, and extremely entertaining. And oh boy will they! I really hope everyone goes along for the ride and checks out each of the events, because they will truly be amazing.” The latest edition to the summer festival line-up will be hosted by YouTube sensations Jessica & Hunter and feature an assortment of DJs, performers, and entertainers. The duo got their start on YouTube and have quickly become Internet icons. Their short skit segments are a combination of Absolutely Fabulous meets crackonista meets a WHOLE LOTTA GAY! They have been featured in a number of award shows and by an assortment of media outlets – even becoming the favorite of Mr. Perez Hilton himself. “One of the highlights of the weekend will certainly be the talent we have brought on board,” says Brown Forman Beverages South Florida market

manager, Hernan Valverde. “Between the incredible Jessica & Hunter, infamous Lady Bunny, and talented DJs like Charlie Rojas, Miik, FR8-O, and George Figares, this weekend is going to be amazing!” Chambord Vodka Weekend will begin on Friday, Aug. 5th at the gorgeous Angler’s Boutique Resort with a prix fixed three-course VIP dinner, followed by an incredible evening of martinis at MOVA and dancing at the brand new 1020 Club @ The Clevelander. On Saturday, the shenanigans will kick off at the Cannon Ball Pool Party at the Catalina Hotel in South Beach. Later that night, pink revelers will get wild on the dance floor of Lincoln Road’s only gay dance club, Score Nightclub. If that were not enough, partygoers will get down, dirty, and scandalous at Miami’s only gay stripper club, the new Johnny’s Miami. Sunday is all about detoxing, as Chambord Vodka Weekend takes over The Standard Hotel and Spa for brunch. Diners will enjoy a prix fixed threecourse meal paired with free unlimited Chambord Vodka cocktails and a complimentary mud bath at The Standard Spa. Afterwards, Jessica & Hunter will take over Ocean Drive at The Palace for the Chambord Vodka T. At 6 p.m. the duo will perform, while Chambord Vodka Weekend participants enjoy an hour of free Chambord Vodka cocktails from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The final hoorah will take place at MOVA Lounge during the wildest and most scandalous party in South Beach, Out ‘n’ Ugly!

WIRE COVER: JESSICA & HUNTER: THE AMAZEBALLS OF CHAMBORD VODKA WEEKEND

Before the weekend of debauchery begins, I was able to snag an interview with Jessica & Hunter to get the low down on their crazy adventures and the wild weekend ahead! For more information on Chambord Vodka Weekend, look up Chambord Vodka Weekend on Facebook or visit www.wireweekly.com! Weekend passes are available in advance for only $40. Weekend passes include access to all events with the exception of the dining events, 1 free Chambord Vodka cocktail at each event, and special surprises and giveaways. What is the concept of Jessica and Hunter? Hunter: Living in LA we see this type of person all over the place and, since we both have a dark and twisted sense of humor, we really wanted to do something with these people who are out every night and obsessed with pop culture. We are really poking fun at the obsession with the media and placing more importance on the world of celebrity than is ever necessary. How did you develop the characters? Jessica: I had been struggling with a character that worked at a MAC makeup counter who was obsessed with smokey eyes and pale lips. One night we were out in West Hollywood and we encountered these hilarious kids who were disgusted by the fact that I was over 25. JC and I realized that was our jump off point for Jessica and Hunter.

sketch, but the response was amazeballs. Our director kept bringing them back and audiences would die. Jessica: We would literally have to hold for what seemed like forever for people to stop laughing till we could move on. I think audiences really recognize these characters, sometimes maybe even a little bit in themselves. How are you like your characters and how are you different? Jessica: Well, I am very boring compared to Jessica, and people are often shocked when they meet me out of character, since I live like a soccer mom. But honestly, there is a little Jessica buried deep down inside me who is a judgmental little bitch that loves to be in the center of all things fabulous. Hunter: To start, I am NO WHERE near as tan as Hunter and I am absolutely shocked whenever someone recognizes me out of costume. I look completely different, and Hunter’s energy, the way he talks and moves, and dresses is quite different from me. However, I too have a tiny little Hunter inside me who loves being in the swirl of celebrity and nightlife. Hunter allows me to live out my fantasy of being a super sassy and guiltless bitch! Which events are you most excited about this weekend? Jessica: OMG... all of them! It’s all new and exciting adventures for us! Although I can’t wait for the Sunday spa day at The Standard with the MUD BATHS! That should be AMAZING.

Hunter: Yes, and I had been working on a character that was obsessed with celebrity and we realized that the characters we were separately working on needed to be in a sketch together. The rest is debauchery filled history!

Hunter: I hope I get to drive down the strip by the beach in a white convertible and see all the gorgeous people on the beach! That’s how I envision Miami, hot people on a hot beach with crystal blue water flanked by a crazy neoned city scape. Pure opulence.

What was everyone’s immediate response to these two characters?

You guys will be performing at a lot of venues. Can you tell me a little bit about what happens during your show?

Hunter: Well, when we presented the sketch with Jessica and Hunter at The Groundlings, we totally expected that they would play for just one week and on to our next

Jessica: We will be swooping in and causing absolute insanity and raising hell for the most part. We will be

11 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

performing our new summer anthem single, “What’s Your Favorite Drink?” and dishing out the dirt on LA nightlife and red carpet ambushes. Hunter: We will be with Lady Bunny at Score, who will be spinning delicious grooves. People should be ready to have fun and have their livers prepped and ready for a fun weekend of Chambord Vodka cocktails! We will be running around having a blast in Miami and meeting all the fabulous people! What is the craziest thing you two have said during a show? Hunter: Oh God… how much time do you have? Jessica: I think one of the craziest things I have said was when we performed at an 18 and up club. I said that everyone looked so young; we must have stumbled into Selena Gomez’s first period party. Hunter: (Laughing) I think for me it was when we were hosting a wet underwear contest. While on stage, I brought it to the audience’s attention that one of the hunky model’s balls was hanging out and then asked him if he sat in some hairy bubblegum. What other projects are you working on? Hunter: I have been writing two new web series: one based on my ultra dramatic mother and another on a couple of gay guys and their adventures in Hollywood with their trash-bag friend Tina, who is actually a bag of trash. Jessica: I am developing more characters and scripting a stage show for all the characters. I also have a series of Snapple commercials coming out soon.

WIRED ON: MENTAL HEALTH SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION IN WOMEN Sexual dysfunction is a problem with a person’s experience of sex. It can affect both men and women—gay, lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual. Sexual dysfunction generally affects women in four ways: Lack of sexual desire - Some women have no interest in sex or have less interest than they used to. Arousal disorders - Some women have no physical sexual response. Others begin to feel aroused, but the arousal then goes away. Orgasmic disorders - Some women are unable to have an orgasm or experience pain during orgasm. Sex pain disorders - Some women feel pain during or after sex. In some cases, when a woman starts to have sex the muscles at the entrance of the vagina may tighten painfully, so much so that a penis or vibrator cannot penetrate it. Such pain is called dyspareunia. Another type of pain is called vaginismus, which is the involuntary contraction of the outer muscles of the vagina. About three-quarters of all couples have difficulties with sex at some point in their relationship. Just because you sometimes don’t enjoy sex for some reason doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a sexual dysfunction. However, if you never want to have sex, or if you never enjoy the experience of sex, you may have a sexual problem. You are the one who decides whether you have a problem and whether you should seek help for it. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR FEMALE SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION? Treatment depends on the diagnosis and the type and cause of dysfunction. Always request a complete examination by your physician to rule-out physical problems. Depending on the diagnosis, your doctor may include any of the following in your treatment: Education. Your doctor may suggest specific books about your specific situation for you to read and learn from. Sex therapy. Your doctor may refer you to a mental health professional with special training and expertise in sex therapy, called a Certified Sex Therapist, who may provide reading materials and give you and your partner a variety of assignments to enhance your sexual activity and resolve the problems that you have. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR LACK OF SEXUAL DESIRE? Change the sexual routine. Women who lack sexual desire are sometimes bored with their sexual activities. What may be helpful is changing the way one makes love, including trying new positions and behaviors and using erotic videos and books for stimulation, as well as changing the place where lovemaking occurs. Counseling. If the lack of sexual desire is not the result of a physical cause, no medical treatment may be needed. Psychological and relationship issues should be addressed by consulting with a licensed mental health professional. Estrogen replacement therapy. Menopause can have a very strong impact on a woman’s sexual functioning. Hormone replacement therapy or other medications can be prescribed to relieve menopausal symptoms. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR AROUSAL DISORDER? Lubricants. Commercial lubricants, vitamin E, and mineral oils are often prescribed for this purpose. More time in foreplay. Many women need more stimulation than their partners realize. This is especially true as women get older. Estrogen replacement. Estrogen replacement therapy can be very helpful and may be supplemented with estrogen-containing vaginal creams. Some women, however, cannot take estrogen replacement therapy. Consult your gynecologist. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR ORGASMIC DISORDER? The inability to reach an orgasm, known as anorgasmia, is often caused by sexual inexperience or insufficient stimulation. A woman may also keep herself from reaching orgasm because of her religious beliefs or fears. Increase stimulation. The stimulation may involve masturbation or use of a vibrator. Contracting and relaxing the pelvic muscles during foreplay or masturbation can also be helpful in increasing arousal. Minimize inhibition. If inhibition keeps a woman from reaching orgasm, the help of a counselor should be sought for addressing the feelings and beliefs causing the inhibition. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR SEX PAIN DISORDER? In cases of pain during intercourse, it is critical to have a complete physical and gynecological examination to identify the underlying cause(s). Treatment will depend on the symptoms and the diagnosis. Dr. Gregg A. Pizzi, Licensed Psychologist, specializes in the Emotional Health & Wellness of the GLBT community.
