ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

TWIST – THE HISTORY OF A LEGEND When it comes to going out in South Beach, there seems to be a different party every night of the week. One night you can be partying on an opulent rooftop deck or dancing the night away to some of the biggest DJs in the world. No matter where you go or what you’re doing, there’s only one place in SoBe where EVERYONE ends up - the legendary TWIST Nightclub! Every year, we dedicate this special issue to the boys of TWIST, and the amazing things they have accomplished over the years. In the summer of 1993, South Beach was right in the middle of its gay hay day. Gianni Versace made his mark on the scene by bringing in hundreds of celebrities, models, and jetsetters from around the world, and as a result, the glamorous phenomenon of South Beach was created. Gay men and women seeking refuge in the sanctuary of club life and fabulosity flocked to the Beach and gay bars and clubs sprung up in abundance. From Scratch, Warsaw, and Salvation to 1235,

Hombre, and West End, there seemed to be an endless supply of gay entertainment on the beach. And right at that time, Club 21 in Hollywood owner Richard Trainor, along with a few new business partners decided it was time to move on down to South Beach, found a small bar on the corner of 11th and Washington Avenue, and named it TWIST. Little did they know that this little bar would eventually grow into one of the most legendary bar establishments in the world, encompassing seven different bars. “When TWIST first opened, I don’t think any of us were thinking too far into the future… we were all having way too much fun at the time,” explains Joel. “It was a close group in the nightclub scene. Most of us had just moved here recently so everything was equally new to us all. Nobody was terribly serious about making money or having money, it was just about having fun.” And the TWIST concept was just that… PURE AND SIMPLE FUN! According to Richard, the concept of TWIST has never swayed or changed: “The original concept of TWIST is still the same since the first day we opened,” says Richard. “We wanted to create a space that was absolutely accessible to ev-

eryone, which is exactly why we stick by our original motto, ‘Never a Cover… Always a Groove.’ Great, quality, consistent drinks, cutting edge DJs, and a talented and professional staff were and still are what TWIST is all about!” Eighteen years later, the boys of TWIST are still having a ton of fun. Yes, we’ve definitely seen a decrease in the amount of gay restaurants and bars calling South Beach home; but, TWIST has been able to outlast them all and for good reason. In this week’s issue, I decided to sit down with a few of the original TWIST locals. Henrietta, Lazaro Leon, and DJ Bill Hallquist gave me some really great insight into the fabulous history of one of the most legendary gay clubs in South Beach. As someone who enjoys a good juicy story, muddled with delicious anecdotes, and shaken with just the right about of scandalous debauchery, it was such a pleasure to hear what each of these guys had to say! So I hope you enjoy hearing their stories just as much as I did! Happy 18th Anniversary TWIST! May there be many, many more to come!

wow! iT’S BeeN A yeAr? JoiN wire mA THE HIGH RISK OF BECOMING GREECE

As the Greek economy implodes and the European Economic Community ponders how best to prevent an economic meltdown that could threaten the E.U. banking system, and possibly parts of ours, I can’t help but wonder if the U.S. is traveling down the Greek road. The mess in Greece comes from too much debt and spending way over their means. Sound familiar? The European finance ministers and the IMF have put forth a record $147 billion bailout package to prevent the total collapse of the Greek economy. In return, the Greek government is selling off billions in infrastructure (e.g. airports, roads, ports, etc.) to raise money to pay off debt, while forcing their citizens to pay higher taxes deal with severe cuts in government programs and implementing austerity measures. I lived through this during the Latin American debt crisis and it is down right brutal. People will definitely suffer a lot in the midst of austerity and high unemployment, and it will take years for things to get back to normal. WIRE COVER: TWIST TURNS 18

PHOTOS BY RAFA CARVAJAL, JUAN SACO MIRONOFF, & HENRY PEREZ

BY THOMAS BARKER Eighteen years and counting! It is almost impossible to believe that TWIST has not only lasted 18 years, but that it has also become the most legendary place to party on our multibillion dollar sandbar!

in South Beach, Lazaro was already working with TWIST owners Joel Stedman and Richard Trainor at another club in Hollywood called Club 21. Now that is a story!

I remember the first time I stumbled into TWIST. It was six years ago, and I had just turned 21. At this point, TWIST was already 12-years old, included five distinct party spaces, and was definitely the most talked about hot spot in town.

I love interviewing DJs, because they always have the juicy gossip on the most scandalous happenings that most people can’t remember because of TWIST’s perfectly stiff beverages, which is why I just had to interview DJ Bill Hallquist. Starting off as a customer and eventually becoming a DJ for TWIST, Bill has some fantastic insight on both sides of the spectrum, including his early TWIST days of spinning vinyl on just a small table in the middle of the dance floor. According to Bill, you could always tell how great the party was by the number of times the records skipped due to the number of revelers bumping into the turntables!

When I walked through the door at 2 a.m. after partying it up all over town, I remember being surprised by how packed TWIST was. Every single space – from the outdoor Bungalow Bar with the dancers to the dark dance floor – was slammed with people dancing, cruising, and just enjoying a fabulous night of debauchery. Of course the fact that TWIST was and still is the easiest place to find a little somethin’ somethin’ at the end of the night immediately made TWIST one of my favorite new watering holes. It’s been six years, and every time I walk into TWIST, I still feel the same way. That mystery of who I am going to meet, the scandalous times on the dance floor, the great drinks, and the fabulous bartenders, who I actually call my friends, have and continue to make TWIST my very own personal Cheers. And I am happy to say that I am not the only one who feels this way. Every year, we dedicate this issue to the boys of TWIST and their amazing accomplishment of not just outlasting every single other gay bar of its time, but also still being one of the hottest places to party in South Beach! To celebrate their anniversary, I sat down with a couple of people who have been with TWIST since the very beginning – Henrietta, Lazaro Leon, and DJ Bill Hallquist. As Miami Beach’s earliest drag diva – 50 years to be exact – Henrietta has seen the full transition of South Beach from retirement village to slum to gay Mecca to today, and has a story for each every one of her incredible experiences. I just could not get enough of her TWIST nostalgia. Now when I was referring to someone who has been there from the very beginning, I couldn’t get any more precise when I mention Lazaro Leon. Before there was even a TWIST

We are very excited to celebrate TWIST’s 18th Anniversary next Wednesday, June 19th at 9 p.m. As always, TWIST will be showing some love to its regulars by providing a premium open bar paired with some delicious hors d’oeuvres until 11 p.m. DJ Maximus 3000 will provide the tunes, while partygoers scramble to scoop up VJ Nathan’s annual TWIST Anniversary DVD, featuring the hottest pop tracks remixed! Of course, TWIST also uses their anniversary party to wow regulars with surprises, amazing renovations, and fantastic new décor elements. I have been told this year will certainly be no different! So sit back, relax, and take a minute to hear what a few of TWIST’s many regulars have to say about their first memories of the most legendary bar in South Beach! See next Wednesday!

WIRE COVER: TWIST TURNS 18

What was your first impression of TWIST when it first opened 18 years ago? I remember when I first walked into TWIST; I was so impressed by the décor at the time. It was one of the first bars in years that had opened with so much excitement. People were saying that it was just going to be a flash in the pan, but I knew that it definitely would not. It had a really gorgeous atmosphere, and the bartenders were so inviting. Richard Trainor always made sure everyone felt welcomed, and I know I definitely did. I felt at home the first night I walked in, and I have felt at home ever since. It is really amazing that TWIST has lasted this long, because I’ve seen a lot of bars come and go on the beach. I just celebrated 50 years of living here, so I’ve seen them all. I think a lot of that has to do with Richard and Joel, and the fact that they never charge a cover, the drinks are the best in town, and the bartenders are so great. What made TWIST so different when it opened? The thing that immediately made TWIST different was the fact that there was no charge at the door and the drink prices were reasonable. At the time that TWIST opened and even still to this day, there is no bar in South Beach that offers that. People appreciate not having to pay a cover, because at some of these places you end up paying $20 just to go inside and there may only be 20 people in the place. Richard has always told me that he would never charge, because he would rather have people spend a few bucks inside than spend it on the door. I think that is wonderful.

What was your first experience at TWIST like? It was beautiful. Everything was so fresh and new, and you could just feel the energy and excitement in the air. It was a lot smaller back then, which made it so intimate; however, the one thing TWIST has never lost – even with all the new areas – is that really intimate feel, where you know you are going to meet someone interesting. It was also great to know that you could go back the very next day or even a few weeks later, and have the same drink, same experience. It was one of the first bars I had been to that really made it a family experience. Why do you think TWIST is successful? I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that anyone can go into TWIST and have a good time. You can go in there and be yourself. There are so many rooms… so many areas. Richard and Joel have done a really great job of making people feel right at home. I remember when Joel was actually a bartender at TWIST. He was amazing behind the bar! What’s the wildest thing you’ve ever experienced at TWIST? Well I just love the Bungalow Bar, and every night of the week there is something wild happening there. Joel and Richard have found some of the most beautiful dancers in Miami… and we know how gorgeous the guys are here. There’s always action at TWIST. I can’t think of just one wild moment, but I am sure it happened in the Bungalow Bar.

13 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

You’ve held a number of events at TWIST. What has been your favorite? Well, I always do my birthday party at TWIST. I let Richard know ahead of time, and he always makes sure that my birthday is special. Of course, I always bring all the food. I just love cooking for my friends at TWIST. Richard has always been such a wonderful person and an amazing friend. He really has made TWIST a beautiful place to go for me, and definitely the best place in South Beach out of all the bars. How do you think TWIST has evolved over the years? I love how TWIST has evolved over the years. It’s been such an amazing experience. TWIST first started with a little bar and has now grown into a beautiful bar that has something for everyone. You don’t want loud music? Go outside and have a cocktail on the patio. You want to dance to Latin music? Go to Bar Five. You like pop? Go to Nathan’s bar. TWIST is the only bar that has something for everyone’s taste. Anything else you would like to let our readers know? I would just say that I am proud to have been there from the beginning, and I am very proud to have been a part of that incredible history in South Beach. I have been here for so many years, and TWIST has just been a fantastic place that has given me so many memories to look back on. The last time I experienced a bar like TWIST, when it comes to great drinks, great times, and incredible service, was back in the 50s and 60s.

WIRE COVER: TWIST TURNS 18

Where are you from? I was born right here in Miami Beach and raised proudly in Little Havana by a single Cuban mother. What is your first memory of TWIST? As a DJ there during the early days, my memories of TWIST always revolved around the DJ booth. Back then, it was down on the dance floor with a thin metal sheet wall separating the DJ and the crowd. People would constantly bump against the turntables and I would literally yell at them the whole night. It was insane. How did you get connected with TWIST? Of course, I have worked at TWIST as a guest DJ throughout the years, since the beginning. But I have also known owners Richard Trainor and Joel Stedman since the first club they started, Club 21 in Hollywood, where I also worked as a DJ. It’s now the infamous Scarlett’s Cabaret. What has been your favorite thing about working at TWIST? Aside from the fact that they are the only club to give one single DJ a good five to six hours to play the latest and best dance music, TWIST is an internationally recognized institution that still remains underground in many ways and I truly love that. It’s magical. It’s a melting pot where everyone from locals and tourists from around the world come to meet and have the

best time. There is so much to do, so many different environments within one place. Indeed, many people come here when nothing else works out because they know they will end up having a great time no matter what. There is something for everyone at TWIST and no other club can claim that. That is why TWIST has been a success for such a long time. What is your greatest memory at TWIST? This is like asking me, “What is my favorite song?” There are just too many moments to think of, especially when I think of those who are no longer with us but were such a big part of the history of this club. There are recent memories too, like this past New Year’s Eve for instance, when I played with Joey Se and the line outside was down to the Wolfsonian Museum. The Fire Marshalls controlled the door until 5 a.m. and people just stayed waiting in line knowing they would never get in, but hoping they could. What was your first impression when you walked into TWIST? This is it? I was a spoiled DJ, used to the big rooms and the big clubs. TWIST changed the game in this town forever by downsizing and staying consistent and literally creating a maze of entertainment for everyone. How do you think TWIST has evolved over the years? TWIST has consistently evolved and managed to remain relevant and trendy throughout the years. We can no longer call it the neighborhood-bar-with-the-touristy-flair it

14 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

once was, it has literally transformed itself into an entertainment complex with multiple rooms with different atmospheres and lots of things to do and see. What is the most scandalous thing you’ve ever experienced at TWIST? I think this question goes along the same lines as what is the greatest memory at TWIST. Call me boring but one scandalous moment to pick out from a typical night at TWIST is all the same. They are all simply TWISTed into a lifetime of tales and memories to share and treasure in a conversation with friends for years to come. What else are you working on these days? I will always continue to be a DJ as long as I can hear, and I will always continue to produce and promote my own special events. I have been managing the marketing for some other clubs for the past eight years, and as a Billboard Reporting DJ, continue to spin locally and abroad. Anything you want to say to the boys of TWIST? Thank you for welcoming me! Those boys know I love it here as much as they do. I have big shoes to fill considering all those who have worked in them and who have helped make TWIST legendary. We have almost two decades of nightclub history we have to keep up with and decades more to build in this great little town called South Beach. Now let’s get to work!

WIRE COVER: TWIST TURNS 18

Where are you from? I am from Attleboro, Massachusetts and moved here in 1973. What is your first memory of TWIST? Not an easy question. I think it would have to be the DJ setup that they originally had. It was located on the dance floor with no DJ booth. I remember playing on this setup, and how hot and smoky it would get. It was a bit harrowing at times. You knew how amazing the night was by how many times the records (yes records) skipped. It would get to a point where you could not see the bar from the DJ setup, because it would get so overwhelmingly packed. You could not see anything past the people in front of the DJ area. How did you get connected with TWIST? I had known Richard, Dan, Alan, Joel, and the late great Frank Keever for at least several years each, before Twist opened, from working with them at least a few other clubs in the past. What has been your favorite thing about working at TWIST? The energy that the DJ can feel from the dance floor at TWIST is, at most times, quiet remarkable. It’s what I look for as a DJ/dance music programmer. This has been my favorite thing about the many nights I’ve worked at TWIST. What is your greatest memory while spinning at TWIST? This is an easy one… even though I’ve never written about this night before. It was the night after Celia Cruz passed away. We were all obviously feeling fragile and sad after losing such an icon and friend. Before heading to work that night, I decided that at 4 a.m. with an hour left to the night I would play an

hour tribute to the Queen. Immediately as soon as they heard the first couple of notes, the room came alive like I had never seen before, anywhere, ever. It’s difficult to put into words the emotions that I felt from the room for that hour, that night. There was this immense sadness in the air, of course, with lots of tears. People were coming to me sobbing, hugging me, and thanking me for such a tribute, which they did not expect. At the same time, there was this celebration with sheer joy at this woman’s life and music. It was a remarkable display of love and joy that I will never forget for as long as I live. Amazing! What was your first impression when you walked into TWIST? WHAT A DUMP! (Laughingly) No, just kidding! I think of Richard Trainor, and he would ‘jokingly’ say something like that. I liked the way it was styled when I first walked in. Different, simple, and eclectic at the same time. I thought the club was a bit small. As you may remember, I think it was less than half the size as it is now, before they took the adjacent space. How do you think TWIST has evolved over the years? Well, for one, it has certainly grown in size. If I had more time, I could elaborate on this question, but undoubtedly it has acquired an icon status that clubs and bars strive for. With its longevity and success, it has become quite the legend. Why do you think TWIST has been so successful? Because of the great DJs they’ve had, of course! But to be honest, that is only one element of success for this now legendary establishment. When I think back on all of the incredibly wonderful people that I have worked with at TWIST over the years, and are currently working there, I am reminded of one very important reason why they are as successful as they are. Always, my hat’s off to the ‘personnel department’ at TWIST. They sure now how to pick ‘em!

15 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

Three more elements: location, location, location! And, with the flow of the club and virtually no dead ends, customers can continuously stroll about the club without ever having to turn around and walk back the same way they came. It’s a simple little element that many clubs overlook. The several totally different vibes, with the different rooms and environments that the club offers, is another strong feature. And of course, it never hurts that there’s “Never A Cover, Always A Groove”! What is the most scandalous thing you’ve ever experienced at TWIST? Off hand, I can’t think of anything really ‘scandalous’… though if you give me a few days perhaps a few gems may come to mind. Basically, it’s just been the usual craziness you would see in such an amazingly successful bar like this, if you spent as much time working there as I have. What else are you working on these days? Lately, I’ve been dabbling in co-producing parties, which is an eye-opener for me. I was always the DJ/ entertainment, but now I’m learning quite a bit about production, coordinating, and managing parties. But, I’m still constantly working on my music for parties and clubs, traveling as much as I can, and DJing in South America quite a bit, mainly Brazil. Heading down this week to work a couple parties for Gay Pride in Sao Paulo. Once again, I get to spin in the largest Pride parade on the planet with an estimated 3.5 million of my closest friends in attendance. Always an amazing spectacle! I’ll be heading back to work in Argentina and Mexico later this year as well. Still having fun! Anything you want to say to the boys of TWIST? Happy anniversary, guys! Congratulations and many more years of success to you! I love you!

WIRED FLICKS: THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST

BY KEVIN WYNN

What’s the most diverting thing about The Best and the Brightest? Is it the film’s farcical story – two freshfaced young marrieds from Delaware move to Manhattan and struggle to get their toddler into a private preschool? Or is it the mildly disorienting spectacle of comedians and comic actors trying things they’ve never tried? Consider Amy Sedaris, star of the Comedy Central cult classic Strangers with Candy. Sedaris’ primary mode is Advanced Crazy Lady, and the more zany accents, out-of-it costumes, and outré wigs you can throw into the mix the better. In Best and Brightest Sedaris shows up looking more or less like a normal person without so much as a putty nose to fiddle with. Similarly, John Hodgman, a cultish humorist best known as the pudgy, pocket-protector-wielding PC Guy in those PC vs. Mac commercials of a few years back, pops up here just playing a part as actors do. It’s odd, as is his part, a pudgy, pedantic prep school official sporting a genial attempt at a moustache. So many familiar faces doing unfamiliar things! What is Kate Mulgrew, Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager, doing playing a cynical (and possibly lesbian) politico? Why is Peter Serafinowicz, who’s done some strange stuff in his time (a selective sample: Look Around You and Spaced on British TV and Shaun of the Dead on the big screen) playing a straightforwardly lecherous Manhattan millionaire? They’re coloring outside the lines, which seems to be as much of a guiding principle as Best and Brightest has. Writer/director Josh Shelov, whose previous proj-

ects have tended toward sports themes, is clearly scribbling all over the page with this film. “I was eager to write a farce, in the vein of Tootsie and A Fish Called Wanda”, says Selov. “I love a good romantic comedy, but to me, a great farce is the funniest comedic subgenre there is – I was in a college production of Noises Off, and people in the audience were literally pressing their hands against their abdomens to hold in their urine. A well-oiled farce has that kind of power. “My great friend and co-writer Michael Jaeger agreed. He and I also had both shared the experience of trying to get our kids into private kindergarten – which is sort of like a farce in real life. We decided it would be fertile ground for a screenplay.” Neil Patrick Harris, the actor, song-and-dance man, and gay rights activist, is known for playing nice on TV (Doogie Howser, M.D., How I Met Your Mother) while reserving his quirkier side for feature films (Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo) and the web (Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog).

Suddenly Jeff is an avant-garde poet, his sexually explosive verses derived from the adventurous sexting of a wealthy, debauched friend (Serafinowicz). Quite a “get” for Coventry Day School, but the headmistress (Jenna Stern) suspects trickery, and the quest for a spot in kindergarten sets Jeff, Samantha, and Sue off on a crazed course from basement apartments to opulent mansions, from posh political fundraisers to sleazy sex clubs. Best and Brightest isn’t an obvious choice for the Coral Gables Art Cinema, which has recently enjoyed hits with Cave of Forgotten Dreams, a 3-D documentary directed by Werner Herzog, and Potiche, a gourmet French comedy starring Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu. But this movie has theaters, like its cast, breaking the mold.

In the lead role in Best and Brightest, Harris plays Jeff, husband to Samantha (Bonnie Somerville) and father to little Beatrice (Amelia Talbot). Nice guy. Pleasant enough. In way over his head with the getting Beatrice into pre-school thing, but OK.

“For the start of summer I found this perfect, breezy American indie comedy, The Best and the Brightest,” says Gables Cinema Director Robert Rosenberg. “I like that it stars some great, alternative talent like the biting Amy Sedaris and John Hodgman of Apple commercial fame, as well as Neil Patrick Harris taking a break from his hit TV show. I’m excited that we’re opening on the same weekend as New York and L.A. Art house films can veer towards the serious side of things, so bringing comedy to our screen is always a welcome shift.”

In other words, he’s playing a straight-up romantic lead in a feature film, which is new for him and perfectly fine.

THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST

Somebody has to keep a level head in the freaky, fractured world of Best and Brightest, which tosses Jeff and Samantha into the peculiar precincts of New York private schools and shakes vigorously. Unable to find a spot for Beatrice, the couple hires Sue Lemon (Sedaris), a preschool placement consultant who’s more interested in results than facts.
