ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

YA’LL WANNA GO DIVE IN THE POOL? C’MON! A few weeks ago, I announced the official dates of the return of the only gay weekend event of the summer, SummerFest! The three-day event will feature over the top dance parties, amazing dining options, and, of course, one of the steamiest pool parties of the summer, The SummerFest Pool Party! For decades almost every major destination city in the country has hosted some sort of gay weekend celebration during the summer - with the exception of Miami Beach that is. Luckily that all changed four years ago with the arrival of SummerFest, and every year it has just gotten larger and larger. Last year, over 1,000 people participated in the weekend’s festivities, imbibing on complimentary cocktails, moving to the beats of international DJs, and enjoying incredible shows by world-renowned entertainers. From Friday, July 22 to Sunday, July 24 the producers of Miami’s largest GLBT weekend event, Winter Party, and Pink Dollar Enterprises will work together to create a fantastic weekend of stiff cocktails, over-the-top entertainment, and sexy fashions during the 4th Annual SummerFest Weekend. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and some of Miami Beach’s great venues will come together to create the hottest event of the summer. The 4th Annual SummerFest

Weekend currently consists of five main events and is still growing: SummerFest VIP Cocktail Reception – an evening of complimentary cocktails paired with delicious hors d’oeuvres in one of the most opulent locations in South Beach – the penthouse of the Shore Club Hotel. This three-story luxury rental usually goes for $10,000 per night, so you can bet it is one hell of a gorgeous space. 4th Annual SummerFest Pool Party – This is the MAIN EVENT during the 4th Annual SummerFest. Hundreds of sexy partygoers will get the chance to dance poolside, as DJs Charlie Rojas and Miik work the turntables till sunset. This year, the producers of SummerFest are providing revelers with the opportunity to enjoy a total VIP package, complete with access to the private Shore Club Beach House and pool, and the official Summerfest ’11 CD, compliments of DJ Charlie Rojas.

partying, there’s nothing better to help get you to the next event than a fabulous meal, champagne, and, of course, cocktails! Expect delicious fare, fabulous entertainment, and great people! Sunday T – What gay weekend event would be complete without a Sunday T Dance? This year, the 4th Annual SummerFest T Dance will take place at Ocean Drive’s only gay bar, The Palace. This event always attracts a ton of nearly naked beach goers, looking to cool off and get wild on the Palace patio! And this is just the beginning! To check out the complete schedule for the 4th Annual SummerFest Weekend or to purchase tickets, visit www.summerfestmiami.com As one of my favorite black divas of the dance floor would say, “Ya’ll wanna go dive in the pool?!” All I can say is, “yes, yes, YES!”

Summer Storm - Summer heat, hot boys, and fabulous entertainment make SummerFest’s late night dance event, Summer Storm, one of the hottest parties of the summer. The clouds will roll in with DJ Rafael Calvente pumping out some thunderous tracks. As one of the hottest DJs in Brazil, Rafael is set to spin Summer Storm revelers into whirlwind of high energy tracks! Sunburst Brunch – After a whole weekend of non-stop

WHAT WOULD YOU DO? PLUS SOME SCENE REPORTING Soon after the Memorial Day Weekend shooting incident in Miami Beach, CNN purchased a video from Narces Benoit and aired a story reporting that Benoit had been thrown to the ground by police and his cell phone had been stomped on. The implication from the news story was clear: the police had exceeded their authority and had tried to prevent Benoit from filming their actions and then showing them to everyone on YouTube or television – so much so that Benoit hid his memory card in his mouth to prevent the police from seizing his video.

EGG & DART

to Open this Summer Reviews Fox News Ad Buys After a three-week campaign by highprofile LGBT organizations urging Orbitz to examine numerous examples of rampant anti-LGBT bigotry on News Corp’s Fox News Channel, the gayfriendly travel agency has agreed to review its advertising policy to ensure that it spends its ad dollars on networks that are consistent with its core corporate values of tolerance and non-discrimination. According to their statement released earlier this week: “Orbitz has heard from the LGBT community about its concerns that its advertisements appear on programs which have objectionable content.” “In the coming weeks, Orbitz will conduct a review of programming on the full range of media we buy. We will also evaluate the best practices among other companies who share our core values to see what approaches they use when evaluating media placements.” Regarding ad purchases going forward, Orbitz confirmed that its “customers will see that our actions will reflect the values that Orbitz the brand, and company, embody.” Rick Jacobs, the founder and chair of the Courage Campaign, which worked with Media Matters for America, Equality Matters, League of Conservation Voters and CREDO Action on the Drop Fox campaign, said he appreciates Orbitz taking this review and thanked them for their continuing support of equality for all Americans. “Orbitz holds itself to high standards, which is why advertising on Fox News is so inconsistent,” said Jacobs. “Their actions can set the standard for other companies that understand business is not just making a quick buck, but also building long-term loyalty through a consistent corporate ethos. As we go forward, we and our members intend to trust but verify the actions of Orbitz and other companies.”

In a letter sent to Orbitz CEO Barney Harford on May 16, the day the campaign was launched, the organizations expressed concern that the travel company’s ads were appearing on Fox News. “…We are writing you to raise our concerns about your association with a network that advances destructive anti-gay rhetoric. Your gay-specific travel site has been warmly received in the gay community, has resulted in higher quality service for the LGBT community and has achieved an increase in growth for Orbitz.” Some examples were given in the letter where the network “acted in clear opposition to the best interest of the LGBT community.” “It is our sincere hope that you will rethink your decision to support them [Fox News] financially through ad revenue,” stated representatives from the participating organizations in the letter. As a follow-up, nearly 200,000 customers signed the letter, more than 2,000 comments were posted on Orbitz’ Facebook wall, and ads from the Drop Fox campaign were placed on Facebook and other websites. “Media Matters has spent years documenting the prolific and widespread anti-LGBT bigotry that is expressed on the Fox News network and we’re pleased to have worked with our friends in the LGBT community as well as Oribitz to start to move towards a solution,” said Ilyse Hogue, Senior Advisor at Media Matters for America. “Advertisers need to realize that when they support Fox News, they risk associating their brand with Fox’s slurs and misinformation, and their customers have a choice to go elsewhere. We’re pleased that Orbitz is taking these concerns seriously, and we hope other advertisers take notice of this proactive response to customer concerns.”

This summer, foodies and hipsters will celebrate the opening of Egg & Dart, the Miami Design District’s newest dining destination. Named after the iconic decorative molding found on much of Greece’s architecture, Egg & Dart will bring to the region’s hottest culinary district a chic Greek restaurant and bar serving up soulful regional cuisine and uniquely-crafted cocktails in a vibrant unpretentious atmosphere. The dynamic duo behind Egg & Dart are no strangers to the culinary landscape. Co-owners Costa Grillas and Niko Theodorou both come from families with years in the restaurant business. Grillas hails from the acclaimed Coral Gables institution, Maria’s, where diners have enjoyed traditional Greek cooking for over 28 years. Partner Theodorou’s family owns and operates the popular Sea Satin Market, a romantic waterfront restaurant nestled in the heart of Mykonos. The combination of their restaurant backgrounds and their creative, timely concept for the restaurant are certain to make Egg & Dart a premiere hotspot in what is arguably the most trend-setting, culinary zip code in town. “With the culinary diversity of Miami’s Design District, we are excited to bring a hip upscale slice of Greece to the neighborhood,” says Grillas. Under the guidance of Theodorou’s mother, Vagia Theodorou, who operates a successful catering company in Athens and a restaurant on the island of Tzia, the menu at Egg & Dart will honor the breadth of traditional Greek cuisine by bringing fresh, wholesome cooking from all regions of Greece. Egg & Dart will be located at 4029 N. Miami Avenue in the Miami Design District.

WIRED FLICKS: L’AMOUR FOU - YVES SAINT LAURENT: FASHION ICON

BY KAREEM TABSCH

It seems like many people are quick to elevate overnight celebrities and relative newcomers to cult-like status, but few individuals are truly as deserving of the terms ‘icon’ or ‘legend’ as groundbreaking fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. With a career that spanned the last-half of the 20th century, and a list of admirers and patrons that includes monarchs, screen stars, heiresses, and women on the street, Yves St. Laurent’s body of work, creativity, and innovation entrenched him as a true French original, a fashion revolutionary, and a never-ending innovator. In fact, we owe Pret-A-Porter (ready to wear clothing that’s off the rack fashion for the masses) to Saint Laurent who first introduced it. In Pierre Thoreton’s mesmerizing new documentary film, L’Amour Fou, we travel past the yards of silk and chiffon to discover glimpses into the life of the man himself as told by the person who knew him best - Pierre Berge, his life and business partner of over 50 years. Yves Saint Laurent was born in Algeria, his eye for fashion reveling itself rather early when, in his late teens, his sketches won a design contest - beating out a then unknown young German designer named Karl Lagerfeld. Yves’ talents were quickly taken notice of and brought to the attention of Christian Dior, who took the shy young boy on as an apprentice and quickly enabled Yves to become his protégé and hand-picked successor. However, when Dior suddenly succumbed to a heart attack, the young and bashful Saint Laurent found himself helming one of the most powerful couture houses at the age of 21. It was shortly thereafter that Yves and Pierre met and their whirlwind romance commenced - the two moved in together and jointly launched the YSL brand in 1961 with Yves at the helm of design and Pierre handling the business. Soon, YSL became one of the largest, most successful and arguably most important fashion empires - a

place it held through Saint Laurent’s retirement in 2002 and most recently with Tom Ford and currently Stefano Pilati designing. In the past several years, many fashionistas have opened up before the camera, letting the world into their creative process and fascinating, often complicated lives. Yet, unlike many of the recent offerings such as Valentino: The Last Emperor or Lagerfeld Confidential, L’Amour Fou was made after the inimitable designers death, so its focus is not on the unveiling of a new couture line but rather on the life Yves and Pierre built. This is not the first film made about the designer. Two films were released in the early 2000s: (Yves Saint Laurent: His Life & Times by Dabid Teboul and Yves Saint Laurent: 5 Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris). However, the filmmaker has been able to craft a very different film that Vanity Fair aptly called “guaranteed to satisfy the Francophile and the fashionista in one fell swoop, with equal parts romanticism, elliptical French philosophizing, and a tasteful dab of decadence.” L’Amour Fou allows Berge to narrate; yet, this is more than just a talking head obituary for the late designer. Instead, the preparation for the 2009 auction of the couple’s large and impressive art collection serves as a framework to tell their story. The collection itself is as stunning and eclectic as the Frenchman’s creations - Picasso, Matisse, and Mondrian displayed alongside lesser known artists and ancient Egyptian and Chinese artifacts. Each piece evocative of a time in the pair’s life - from their budding romance and commercial success to the tumultuous years of depression and drug abuse - and the refuge and respite they found in their Moroccan villa. L’Amour Fou is not merely a showcase of breathtaking art and anecdotal accounts, there is a wealth of truly wonderful archival footage - from an interview with the then

21-year old designer unveiling his first collection for the House of Dior, to home video with Andy Warhol as he marvels at the portrait of himself the artist had created. Yes, there is plenty of runway shows and models in gowns to satisfy any style maven, but perhaps most touching is the footage the film commences with, Yves Saint Laurent sitting before a microphone with the instantly recognizable YSL logo behind him as he announces his retirement or the snippets of the touching eulogy Berge delivered at his funeral. The film culminates with the auction itself - a sale that raised over $300 million, most of which went to AIDS research. Yet, as the film comes to a close, one can’t help but feel that both the film and the auction are simultaneously the final swan song for Yves and a catharsis for Berge; one that we as viewers are allowed to partake in. Throughout, Berge contends that he is not sentimental or nostalgic but eventually his feelings betray his reserved demeanor when he ultimately declares, “without Yves here these objects lose their value.” As viewers, we soon discover that as one part fashion biography and one part art documentary L’Amour Fou’s true value is in the love story it tells with boundless charm and a generous heart.

WIRE COVER: JOHNNY’S MIAMI OPENS NEXT WEEKEND - MIAMI’S OWN NIGHTLIFE VIAGRA

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS PROVIDED BY JOHNNY’S It’s hard to believe that an area as sexy as South Beach doesn’t have a single gay stripper club. In fact, the Miami Beach commission actually made it impossible to have nudity and alcohol in the same establishment. Can someone say Footloose all over again?! For years, Miami locals and out-of-towners have had to drive across the county line to Fort Lauderdale to enjoy a scandalously fun filled night of nearly naked delicious guys paired with fantastic entertainment and stiff cocktails – pun is most definitely intended. Luckily, one of Fort Lauderdale’s most successful gay male stripper clubs has decided to bring its concept down to Miami. Yes, that’s right! Johnny’s will be opening a new location right here in Downtown Miami, and I cannot tell you how excited I am! As someone who personally enjoys hot guys – better yet, naked hot guys – Johnny’s is just a bit of what the doctor ordered when it comes to our already fantastic Miami nightlife. Owner Sean David spent months searching for the perfect location in Miami that would allow him to truly integrate the Johnny’s concept of offering three distinct areas, where partygoers can either enjoy a frisky lap dance, a night on the dance floor, or some fabulous conversation, while sipping on a cocktail alfresco. The best part about this new location, besides the gorgeous décor elements, is that this party is for anyone 18 and up, as opposed to Miami Beach where 21 and up is an absolute requirement! Next weekend, Sean is inviting all of our readers to check out his new location and enjoy a fun filled weekend of great entertainment, stiff drinks, and even stiffer men. (I just had to go there!) In the meantime, I took a moment to sit down with Sean to learn more about Johnny’s, his new location, and his incredible line-up of events! Check it out! 12 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

WIRE COVER: JOHNNY’S MIAMI OPENS NEXT WEEKEND - MIAMI’S OWN NIGHTLIFE VIAGRA

Where are you from? I am originally from Tel-Aviv, Israel. I moved to South Florida in May of 1995. When and how did you get connected with Johnny’s? I was very interested in Johnny’s but was waiting for the perfect time to purchase it. After long negotiations with Mr. Johnny Moses and promising him to take care of his baby, he entrusted me and sold me the club in March of 2008. What inspired you to get into this business? Believe it or not, I actually started off in this business as a dancer and not as an owner. I always had the passion and enthusiasm for this business and knew early on that I would become a male stripper bar owner. What inspires me is creating an environment of positive energy and freedom of self-expression. What is the concept of Johnny’s? There are multiple unique environments under one roof where people from all different walks of life can feel welcome. We have the stripper’s room, where we feature 30 to 40 of the most beautiful dancers from all over the world. We have the dance club side with different nightly themes and we also feature an outdoor patio if you want to escape to somewhere more intimate. You have some of the most amazing dancers. How do you find them? After over 30 years in the business most dancers find us simply because of the reputation of the bar. But of course, we are always actively recruiting hot male dancers in gyms, colleges, and through Internet sources. You’ve also partnered with a number of other bars/clubs, including Palace and Discotekka. Why do you think it is important to work with other bars? The success of other gay bars in any city is important to me, because it creates excitement in the area, which creates a larger draw of gay patrons. Working with other bars/clubs allows for cross-promoting and provides non-stripper bars with access to our beautiful boys for special events. Simply put, I want all gay businesses to be successful, which will make me successful. Why do you think people enjoy Johnny’s so much? We at Johnny’s provide an outstanding customer service experience. We train our staff and dancers on a regular basis to that end. That, coupled with energetic female impersonator emcees, DJs, themes, and engaging beautiful dancers, creates the recipe for a unique entertainment experience, which is what people love about Johnny’s. One of the unique aspects of Johnny’s is the ability for each patron to have direct access to the owners and managers, which ensures that they are made to feel as valuable as they truly are to us. Why did you decide to finally open a location in Miami? Branching out was always my intention. Miami is an international tourist city with great opportunities for the gay market. I believe that the Miami location will be a great addition to the existing gay business arena. I really hope that by opening Johnny’s Miami other gay businesses will consider Miami as potential location for their business.

WIRE COVER: JOHNNY’S MIAMI OPENS NEXT WEEKEND - MIAMI’S OWN NIGHTLIFE VIAGRA

How did you find your venue and why did you select the new space? After over eight months of searching for the perfect location and the perfect venue, as well as turning down potential locations that did not meet every aspect of what I was looking for, I stumbled upon the space that will now be the new Johnny’s. The primary elements of why I chose that area of Downtown Miami and specifically this location was because I would be able to mirror the success of our Fort Lauderdale location in that I could have three separate spaces under one roof, including the stripper side, the dance club side, and outdoor patio, while providing access to 18-year old patrons, as well as ample secured parking. I understand that it is a gorgeous venue. Can you tell me a little bit about the décor elements? Upscale is the keyword for Johnny’s Miami. The patrons will enjoy a lavish lounge, state of the art sound and lighting system, stunning restrooms, and feel an ambience like no other strip club in the US. No expense was spared in the goal of creating the most appealing and sexy space I could. What are you most looking forward to about your Miami location? I am looking forward to spreading the reputation of Johnny’s to a new market and bringing the magic that only my team and I can create. What can people expect at your grand opening next weekend? Any surprises? The most talented and well-known people in the industry are coming together for this very special event. We will be featuring DJ Daisy D, DJ Tpromix, DJ Miik, MC Sol Delight, Ricardito “La La La”, and as always – the thing that Johnny’s is most known for – the most muscular, masculine, and delicious men you will ever lay your eyes on. In terms of your weekly line-up, what regular events can people look forward to at Johnny’s Miami? Strippers will perform seven days a week starting at 6 p.m. This is the core of the business and our selection process for the strippers is very intensive, as we are only accepting the hottest men we can find. In addition to our men, we will feature weekly events, such as our famous Amateur Strip Contest with prizes given to patrons and potential new strippers to showcase their look and talent. We’ll also have karaoke, a Latin party, and an unconventional Sunday T-Dance. Of course private parties and events will always be welcome. The uniqueness of Johnny’s Miami is our partnership with LOGO, Ole’ TV, and MTV to bring Johnny’s events to the masses. How is the Miami location similar and how is it different from Fort Lauderdale? The strippers in Miami are going to be masculine and muscular. The hours of operation are later in Miami, going till 5 a.m. daily. Anything else you want Wire readers to know? I would like to extend a personal invitation to all of South Florida and local Miami residents to join us for an upscale and modern experience like no other. My promise to the community is to provide them with the hottest strippers in the world, the most engaging events, and a customer service experience unparalleled in the industry. I would like to provide your readers with my personal email address, so that they can directly inform me of their thoughts, suggestions, and comments regarding the new location. I created the Johnny’s franchise for my patrons benefit, and their opinion is the only one that matters. iSeanDavid@gmail.com.

TOP TRAX: JELLYBEAN BENITEZ BRINGS HIS SWEET BEATS TO MIAMI

BY DJ FR8-O

The 1980s marked the end of the disco era and the start of a huge shift in dance music. One of the men who led the charge from the underground clubs of New York City was John ‘Jellybean” Benitez. He was the resident DJ of The Funhouse in 1982 when he met an ambitious blonde singer at his booth and a connection was made – not to mention a little history! Their friendship spawned a professional and personal relationship that brought dance music from the dark shadows of the underground to radio stations around the world. Doors began to open for both artists and their success took them in opposite directions. The ambitious blonde singer went on to become the worldwide Queen of Pop, while Jellybean continued to produce tracks for major recording artists such as Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Debbie Harry, and Barbra Streisand. Never forgetting his roots, Jellybean opened his own label in 1995 called H.O.L.A. Records (Home Of Latino Artists) to create opportunities for other young Hispanic artists to get a break in the music Industry. These days Jellybean’s empire has grown to include a production company, record label, and publishing company, but he still manages to make time for his first love – DJing. He continues to turn out the tracks on dance floors all over the world, making a monthly stop at Miami’s own Vagabond. The party, hosted by the legendary Back Door Bamby, is called “Ain’t Nuthin’ But a House Party” and will be in full force next Saturday, June 25th with Jellybean bringin’ the sweet beats. Having been wildly entertained by Jellybean’s music growing up and inspired to become a DJ because of it, I was blown away to finally speak with the legend himself and excited to hear him live for the first time next week! Where did you get the name ‘Jellybean’? My sister Debbie gave it to me. It came from me always saying: “Know what I mean, jellybean?” How did you make that first transition from DJ to Producer? I started out as a DJ then started remixing. Remixing then led me to producing. The first song I ever produced was “Holiday” for a then unknown artist named Madonna. You’ve worked with some huge artists during your career. Who has been your favorite artist to work with and why? I have a lot to choose from. My most memorable recording sessions would have to be with Madonna. I produced/remixed about 12 songs for her. The other artist I really enjoyed working with was Whitney Houston. She had the best voice I’ve ever heard without using any effects or studio wizardry. What do you think about the evolution of music production these days compared to how things were 25 years ago? There’s substantially more technology involved in the recording process than there was 25 years ago. But it all starts with a great song. You can only polish and shine so much. In the end it comes down to the song and the vocalist’s performance and capturing the magic.

What went through your mind when you first heard you were being inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame?

When do we get to hear you here in Miami?

I was surprised. I had been a DJ groupie for years and a lot of the early pioneers of DJing hadn’t been inducted yet.

I have a monthly residency at The Vagabond. My next session is Saturday, June 25th for Back Door Bamby. I have the privilege of working with Carmel Ophir, who is also a very talented DJ/selector and of course the colorful and spirited Back Door Bamby crew!

Who are some producers you enjoy listening to the most?

Any chance of a Jellybean/Madonna reunion someday?

I really enjoy the productions of Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas.

Anything is possible! I’ll call her and ask.

Which artist would you most like to cut a new record with? Rihanna and Lady Gaga! What projects have you been up to lately? I’ve been touring the world DJing, as well as working on a new remix project called “3 Amigos.” I’m also programming a new radio station for SIRIUS/XM that will launch in July. Will we be hearing some new Jellybean tracks soon? Yes. My record label, Jellybean Soul, will be releasing a new track in a few weeks called “Give Me Your Love” by Bernadette.
