ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

FUNDRAISING SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE Throughout the fall and winter season in South Florida, it seems like there is an endless supply of fundraisers and events, and as we gear up for what is sure to be a steamy summer, I can already feel the fundraising season coming to a close. This week, I would like to dedicate my column to one of the last but not the least important fundraising event of the year – SAVE Dade’s Champions of Equality Awards cocktail reception and silent auction. The event will take place this Friday, May 20th from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the gorgeous Ice Palace Studios (1400 North Miami Ave).

rightfully earns them the 2011 Champions of Equality Award.

The Champions of Equality Awards was established to honor people who have significantly advanced the cause of equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in Miami-Dade County, and this year’s honorees include the ACLU of Florida, Greenberg Traurig LLP, and the amazing Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.

A few weeks ago, we were lucky enough to feature the final Champions of Equality Award recipient, the fabulous South Florida Congresswoman Debbie WassermanSchultz. The equality movement depends on the support of our elected officials, and no other South Florida Congresswoman has ever done so much for our community.

For the past 33 years, the state of Florida has been one of the only states in the country to have an open ban on gays and lesbians from adopting. In September of 2010, the ACLU of Florida victoriously struck down this ban under the leadership of the former LGBT Advocacy Project Director, Robert Rosenwald Esq. The ACLU of Florida has fought for the rights of children to have a “forever home,” and this victory continues to prove their commitment to the fight for LGBT equality and

Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz, recently named head of the Democratic National Committee, has led the movement for equality on Capitol Hill. Her actions include being a founding member and Vice-Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, a co-sponsor in the effort to repeal the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, a co-sponsor of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act, and a co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

This major victory would not have been possible without the support of a committed coalition of organizations and legal advisors. At the top of the list of contributors to the ACLU’s success is Greenberg Traurig LLP, a for-profit law firm. Greenberg Traurig LLP stepped up to defend the rights of the two children who have now been legally adopted by Martin Gill without charging a single fee. Greenberg Traurig has publicly stated that this case was the “most meaningful” for its team. Its willingness to go above and beyond to protect the interests of these children earns Greenberg the 2011 Champions of Equality Award.

Following last year’s decision, Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz stated, “As a mother of three children, and as a founding Vice Chair of the GLBT Equality Caucus in the United States Congress, I was overjoyed to learn that a Miami appeals court has upheld the decision that struck down Florida’s painful and harmful anti-gay adoption ban as unconstitutional.” Congresswoman Wasserman-Shultz’s unwavering support for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans provides needed leadership for her colleagues and advances the dialogue on LGBT equality. And in terms of major political players who have fearlessly fought for our rights, I couldn’t be any happier to hear that Ileana Ros-Lehtinen will be hosting a prereception the same evening for the Miami Log Cabin Republicans. During the event, she will meet with members of the LBGT community and discuss her role in fighting for LGBT equality. The pre-cocktail reception will take place from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Overall, this is a terrific event that raises much needed money for a very important organization. I hope you will come out this Friday to support SAVE Dade and show some love to a few of the people and organizations that have put their neck and even their careers on the line to fight for our rights! See you there!

THIS IS WHY I LOVE MIAMI & THE BEACHES!

Last week I wrote about the beautiful weather we have been enjoying the last couple of weeks and my plans to take a boat tour adventure with Ocean Force Adventures. I am happy to report I did so on Monday and had a blast riding around the waters of Miami Beach, Miami, Biscayne Bay, and Key Biscayne on an intimate six-person boat tour. Now that’s why I really love Miami! I came to live in the U.S. from my native Costa Rica when I was accepted to attend the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. I loved Connecticut for its maritime history, beautiful coastal waters, delicious seafood, really nice people, and small town American lifestyle. But I HATED the cold weather once the thrill of seeing snow for the first time in my life turned into the dread of standing at attention in uniform freezing my you-know-what off while my cadre at the Academy took his or her sweet little time inspecting my uniform.

This beautiful sculpture honors the Tequesta tribe who lived on Biscayne Bay in what is now Miami-Dade County. It is believed that their main village, home to the Tequesta’s chief, was located at the mouth of the Miami River.

WIRE FEATURE: RUPAUL DRAG RACE WINNER RAJA TO PERFORM @ TWIST

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS COURTESY OF: LOGO

After weeks of draggy challenges, beauty battles, wigs being snatched, “Heathers vs. Boogers” drama, and endless kiki-ing over cocktails in the Interior Illusions lounge, America has its “Next Drag Superstar.” Yes, kids… When push came to prance, Raja sashayed, strutted, served it and ultimately lip-synced her way to the top of Season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She’s been crowned by goddess RuPaul herself and now with the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” firmly tucked away tighter than Carmen Carrera’s goodies, Raja is sashaying on to bigger and brighter things, including the national RuPaul Drag Race Season 3 Tour! This Friday, Raja will make her Miami debut at one of SoBe’s most legendary clubs, TWIST! As always, you can expect a jam packed house, stiff drinks, and certainly an amazing performance by Raja! We were able to snag a brief interview with Miss Queen Bee herself, so we could get the inside scoop on the show and her current tour!

WIRE FEATURE: RUPAUL DRAG RACE WINNER RAJA TO PERFORM @ TWIST Check it out: Where are you from? I am from Los Angeles. What inspired you to do drag? I really love fashion, and I have always had a deep need to be adorned in women’s clothing. When did you begin performing, and what was your first experience like? I started experimenting with drag at about 16-years old, but didn’t actually start performing regularly till I was 19. The first time I performed, it was very awkward, but really, really exciting. I guess that is something a lot of people experience. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do as a career?

What were your expectations going in and how was the reality different? I knew going into it that the show was going to test my patience and abilities, but Jesus did it ever! It’s a lot more difficult than most people think. How was it working with RuPaul? Ru was great to work with and to be around. He is iconic and his presence could only work as a motivation for us who admire his career and journey. Who do you think was your fiercest competition? There were so many girls that challenged me and surprised me, but my biggest competitor was myself. I felt as if I had to really take myself there each time and top myself constantly.

Well I didn’t really realize that doing drag could be a career until I was heavily performing. I was in my mid20s, and was booked solid. That is when I realized that I couldn’t live without drag. Who has inspired you? There are so many, but if I have to name a few, it would be Leigh Bowery, Klaus Nomi, Isabela Blow, Grace Jones, Lady Miss Kier, and Madonna of course. There are so many fabulous divas out there. Any of them, you love to perform the most? I am a Chaka Khan fanatic! What was the process like to get on RuPaul’s Drag Race? Deciding to put myself out there in front of millions of people was the most challenging part of the process. To make yourself a target for opinions and comments took a lot of self motivation and coaxing. I have a side to me that is quite shy and sensitive, so I had to really push myself to realize that this could be one of the best things I’d ever do in my life.

11 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

How do you think the show is changing the perception of the drag community? Do you think it is helping or hindering? I think RuPaul’s Drag Race celebrates drag once again. There was, and have been, moments when drag was suppressed in the gay community and treated like an embarrassment. Drag is back and bringing awareness to the fact that it is a legitimate and thriving art form. It’s obviously very entertaining as well. I mean look at the show! What was the most exciting part of being on the show? WINNING!!! What are you looking forward to the most during your stay in Miami? Sadly, it’s only a brief stay this time. Miami is so deeply sexy in every way, and I’ve always loved the sultry energy it has. I hope to absorb some sun and sexy. TWIST is one of the most legendary clubs in South Beach. How did you get connected with the boys of TWIST? I am beyond excited to be at TWIST! I have always loved Miami’s gay nightlife and culture. I feel honored to have been invited to such a great party! What can people expect during your performance? I think my performance style is quite different than many queens. I love to incorporate fashion elements into all my numbers and to keep it sexy and edgy through a strong stage presence. You’ll just have to see! What other projects are you currently working on? I’m experimenting with music lately. I got to collaborate with some amazing friends, including DJ Josh Peace and Eddie Amador. We put together a song called Diamond Crowned Queen, which is available on iTunes. I think it is important, as an artist to constantly experiment with ideas and mediums, and I have many things lined up!

WIRE COVER: SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIT SOUTH FLORIDA

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS COURTESY OF: HAIR NATIONAL TOUR

One of the major reasons our community has progressed in terms of equality and acceptance is the sexual revolution of the 60s. In the decade of love, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, thousands of self-professed hippies explored their sexuality, experimented with each and every type of drug available, rebelled against uniformity and government control, and then summed it all up in some of the greatest music of the century. On Memorial Day Weekend, South Florida will welcome the 2009 Tony Award Winning Musical Revival HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, and we couldn’t be more excited. The show that continues to make waves and spark change around the world will play the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts from May 31 – June 5 and Broward Center for the Performing Arts from June 7 – 19. With a score including such enduring musical numbers as “Let the Sun Shine In,” Aquarius,” “Hair” and “Good Morning Starshine,” HAIR depicts the birth of a cultural movement in the 60s and 70s that changed America forever.

WIRE COVER: SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIT SOUTH FLORIDA

HAIR tells the story of the “tribe”, a group of politically active, long-haired hippies of the “Age of Aquarius” living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. Claude, his good friend Berger, their roommate Sheila, and their friends struggle to balance their young lives, loves, and the sexual revolution with their rebellion against the war and their conservative parents and society. Ultimately, Claude must decide whether to resist the draft as his friends have done, or to succumb to the pressures of his parents (and conservative America) to serve in Vietnam, compromising his pacifistic principles and risking his life. The show resonates with an irresistible message of hope more than 40 years after it first opened on Broadway. HAIR won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival as well as the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical. HAIR was also nominated for an additional seven Tony Awards, including Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design. The

cast recording was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Of course, no show as famous as HAIR would be complete without an amazing cast. We were able to catch up with lead cast member, Matt DeAngelis, who plays Woof. Matt was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up on show tunes and the rabid Boston sports scene. From a very early age, Matt had a true passion for the arts. Since the age of eight, he has been performing musicals non-stop. After majoring in Musical Theater at both the University of Maine and the Boston Conservatory, Matt moved to New York, where he worked as a struggling actor, taking little parts here and there. His big break finally came when he was cast in the production of HAIR on Broadway. Eventually he joined the West End Company of HAIR in London, where he played for six months. One of the things that makes Matt so special is his dedication to GLBT equality. As a straight man, Matt says, “I am proud to say that I am a straight

15 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

man who defends the rights of my amazing and beautiful gay friends. We have very much rallied to the cause and it has seeped into our show and our work!” Check out what else Matt had to say in his interview with Wire Magazine: Where are you from? I am from Boston, Massachusetts. What inspired you to go into theater? My mother inspired me to do theater. She dragged me to my first audition, because I was always singing on the coffee table. I was immediately hooked! Every actor struggles to make it into the biz. What do you consider your big break? This show was my big break. It changed my life personally and professionally forever. But there really isn’t a break though. There’s a lot more work to be done.

WIRE COVER: SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIT SOUTH FLORIDA

When did you first get connected with Hair? I did a regional production of it a year before I booked it on Broadway. Can you tell me a little bit about your character? He is young and full of life. He wants to be a leader and the center of attention but doesn’t quite have it figured out yet. He is very sensitive and he provides a little bit of ambiguously sexual comic relief. What do you like most about playing this character? I love how fun it is, as a man, to explore my sensitive side. How are you and your character similar and different? I am actually very sensitive. I try to hide it, but it’s nice to let it show! Can you summarize the story of HAIR for me? HAIR is about a tribe of hippies living in Central park. Claude gets his draft notice in the mail, and he and we don’t know quite how to react. The rest is about sex, drugs, and rock and roll. We all take our clothes off at the end of Act 1!

Do you think there are any similarities to the GLBT equal rights movement and the overall story of HAIR? If so, please explain.

What are you looking forward to most about performing in South Florida?

We have been very connected to the gay rights cause throughout our journey with HAIR. Gavin Creel, our original Claude on Broadway, started an amazing organization called Broadway Impact. We have been doing benefit concerts all across the country to support that cause. The idea of youth rebellion and protest speaks to the plight of gay people everywhere. We marched on Washington and sang on the steps of the capitol for the Marriage Equality Rally. I am proud to say that I am a straight man who defends the rights of my amazing and beautiful gay friends. We have very much rallied to the cause and it has seeped into our show and our work!

What’s in the future for Matt?

How does the touring show differ from being on Broadway? It’s just like performing on Broadway except you don’t always sleep in the same place and you wear the same 10 outfits all the time! What can people expect on opening night? People can expect excitement, actors running into the audience, some of the best music ever written, nudity, and all the sex, drugs, and rock and roll you could ask for.

TOP TRAX: CHECK OUT DUSTIN’S BOX!

BY DJ FR8-O

Monday has always had such a bad rep. It marks the end of the weekend and the beginning of another five days of schedules and stress. But for those of us in the bar and restaurant industry (waiters, bartenders, DJs, etc.), Monday is when our weekend begins. One of the hottest parties ever to rock Monday nights is gLitter Box @ Kill Your Idol hosted by Dustin Reffca. When I first stepped into this wicked wonderland, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself in a place where mounted shark heads, upside-down spacemen, and modern art installations overlook an eclectic crowd of revelers dancing to twisted pop, mash-ups, electro, house, and retro tracks—a truly open format unheard of at any other venue. I got to chill with the Canadian party promoter one night to find out how he came up with this crazy concept and why you should check out his “Box.”

How long have you been promoting and producing events? I originally worked with a production company back in 2002 called Creations, which consisted of the parties Back Door Bamby at Crobar, Wasabi Tuesdays at Sushi Samba, Filthy Gorgeous at The Forge, and Plastic Fantastic at Studio A. What are some of the most memorable events you’ve promoted in the past? All the parties I have been involved with, I have really enjoyed, but two moments stick out in my mind. My first love will always be Back Door Bamby. It was the first party I attended in Miami Beach and the first one I ever was involved with. The second would be my first solo party, One Night in Bangkok on Wednesday nights. It really taught me a lot about the business and gave me a better understanding of the nightlife dos and don’ts. What makes your events different than every other gay South Beach party? Let’s face it; it’s not that easy to create a party these days that hasn’t been done before. On Mondays at gLitter Box one of our major concepts is a true open format with DJ Smeejay. I really wanted him to take control and play everything from Top 40 music, to 70s, 80s, 90s, and even some of the most obscure remixes, serious and comical. Smeejay has an endless library of music. The night really appeals to everyone, gay or straight. Who are some of the most outrageous people you’ve had the pleasure of working with? I’ve gotten the opportunity to work with lots of great promoters and gay icons, including Susanne Bartsch, Richie

Rich, Cazwell, Amanda Lepore, and many local artists too. All of them really add their own flare to a party and hopefully that can be seen in my events. How did you get involved with Kill Your Idol? Smeejay and I had worked together at Click and we really enjoyed collaborating. So after we left Click, we wanted to start a new night. We wanted a space that was different from the norm on South Beach… something that was a little more intimate, but with a casual local feel. We had both heard that Kill Your Idol (formally Blue) had just opened. It was that local bar you would find in the Village in New York, but low and behold, it was in South Beach. It has a great feel, featuring local artists and off the wall (literally) spacemen!!! We knew it was the right place. Why should people check out your “Box”? It’s a great place to just hang (laughs). No bullshit, no rules. You can have a serious conversation with your friends or you can work the stripper pole on the landing upstairs. It’s really up to you. Honestly I suggest the stripper pole. Do you have any new events coming up that we should check out? gLitter Box Mondays’ One Year Anniversary on June 13th at Kill Your Idol! This is a huge deal in South Beach nightlife, especially for a weekly Monday night party. My Birthday is Tuesday June 21st, which I will be celebrating at Funhouse Tuesdays at Twist. For Fun House, I wanted to bring back the “I don’t care what anyone thinks. I’m here to drink and let loose,” mentality. DJ Daisy D adds her own flavor with great music and some of the funniest and unique shows you will ever see. I’m working with

18 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

another venue for a new night, but I want to make sure I have the right concept for it. I don’t want to do a new party, just to have a new party. I want it to mean something and create a new experience for the people that attend it. In the mean time, you may see my name pop up on some hosting gigs. How much hair spray do you go through in a week? (Laughing) Not that much. Just about a can a week. What’s the highest your hair has ever been? I’ve never really measured it (my hair that is), but let’s just say while riding in a car I do much better when the seat is reclined or when I’m riding in a convertible.
