ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

NOT ALL MONEY IS DIRTY! With less than a month to go till the arrival of Miami Beach Gay Pride, things are shaping up quite nicely for the single largest one-day event for the gay community in Miami Beach. And leading up to Miami Beach Gay Pride 2011, there will be a number of fundraising events taking place at various bars and private venues. In fact, this past Tuesday Wire Magazine presented the Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Bachelor Auction at MOVA. The night began with MOVA’s weekly Tuesday night Bingo with Geraldine, benefitting Care Resource at 9 p.m. By 10 p.m. MOVA was packed with dozens of guys, looking to snag one of our super sexy bachelors, who I have to admit were the hottest guys I think we’ve ever had on the auction block! The auction began with the super delicious Pablo Hernandez, who was definitely not shy about showing a little skin to bump up the bidding. His smokin’ body was certainly a great way to kick off the auction. Afterwards Palace Boy Brandon Propst hopped on stage, launching a frenzy of bids from around the room. Next up was our tennis champion, who represented Fort Lauderdale in a fab way. Thomas Schneider was a major hit with bidders, bringing in close to $200 for Miami Beach Gay Pride. And before the Bachelor Auction even began, our next bachelor had bidders on standby. Yubi Herrera of

Care Resource, showed the crowd that a sophisticated professional can also have a slammin’ body. So much so in fact, Yubi was sold to a bidder that wasn’t even present! Next up was local publicist and everyone’s favorite party boy, Jose Cano. Smart, funny, and personality for days, Jose worked the stage, raising hundreds of dollars for Miami Beach Gay Pride. There is no doubt in my mind that our most scandalous bachelor of the evening was our next prize, Thomas Falk. Working the room for pre-bids, Thomas sported nothing but a bow tie and a smile when he hit the stage.

By the end of the night, we had raised close to $1,500 for Miami Beach Gay Pride, and it was all because these guys were willing to kick their inhibitions to the curb, laugh at themselves, and have a good time – all in the name of a great cause. I want to personally thank each of them for their support of Pride, Wire Magazine, and MOVA! You’re all rock stars! See you at Miami Beach Gay Pride on April 16th!

When our most expensive bachelor hopped on stage, the room went wild with cheers. Things got even crazier as the infamous Geraldine lovingly fondled Max Emerson. (I have to admit, it was definitely hard to keep my hands to myself!) After an intense bidding session, Max was finally sold at the highest bid of the night, $300! As for our sweetest, most adorable, and bashful bachelor, that award goes to Maurico Bontero. After reluctantly taking off his shirt, Mauricio became one of the most sought after bachelors, going for more than $200! The auction rounded out with one of my personal favs and one of Wire Magazine’s Hottest Bachelors of 2011, Javier Hernandez. Compact, brilliant smile, and perfect body made it impossible not to love this guy! I almost jumped off the auction block to bid myself!

POST MODERN THE KING IS DEAD; LONG LIVE THE KING I’m still expecting some judge somewhere, in some court, to find a way to declare the successful recall of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez invalid or inappropriate; or to otherwise return Alvarez to the county throne. That’s what courts are for in today’s political environment -- to manipulate the public sector to the explicit needs of the ruling class and find a way to claim it has something to do with “law.” Heck, I might still be expecting it when Miami-Dade has a new mayor in a few weeks. Well, not really. What I actually expect is that the next mayor will have to walk a fine line between appeasing government’s real constituency -- government employees, developers, high-salary elite residents -- and pretending to care about what the average resident wants. The latter, of course, is only because of the public’s success in driving King Carlos out of office and, frankly, they just might do it again.

ing to determine the meaning of the terms “job,” “employed”, and “compensation.” Yeah, that sounds like it will work out honestly.

Then, once a few measures have created the impression that the next mayor is actually responsive to the public, things will get back to normal. It will be another great time to work for the government; and it will be squat for you and I.

But what the recall effort was about was sending local government a message. Oh, they didn’t get the message, but they did get fear. And they have plenty of reason to fear.

The commission is also looking at once again restructuring the county government so that the mayor will have less power and once again, no one elected official will hold ultimate responsibility. So the reason why the lawyers haven’t found a way to return Alvarez to office? They are working hard to ensure that the new mayor and commission can appear to be reform oriented without actually doing anything. In fact, an argument could be made that commissioners will actually wield greater power and have to accept even less responsibility if the sprinkling of minor reforms is approved by voters. Is that what this was all about? Of course not.

I’m ready to support the recall of the next Miami-Dade mayor as soon as someone puts the papers together. Whoever he is. WIRE FEATURE: SIMPLE LIFE THURSDAYS ON STEROIDS

SIMPLE LIFE THURSDAYS ON STEROIDS BY THOMAS BARKER

DAISY D, EDISON FARROW, & CHYNA

Edison Farrow has been at the forefront of many trends in South Beach gay nightlife for more than a decade. Starting with his traveling martini party, Martin Tuesdays, Edison’s repertoire of events and parties has grown to include some of the most talked about gay soirees in South Beach. His weekly Thursday night party, Simple Life Thursdays, has consistently been the hottest Thursday night event for nearly six years, while his weekly Friday night event, Hype at Bar 721, continues to draw in a crowd of young hipsters and fashionistas, and, of course, his Sunday night dance party, JUMP! Sundays has continued to provide partygoers, looking to close out the weekend in one of the most luxurious nightclubs in Miami, with a place to party their asses off. On Thursday, April 7th from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Edison will present the next evolution of both Simple Life Thursdays and JUMP! Sundays with the grand opening of Simple Life Thursdays at its new location, LUX! Fusing together all the energy of Simple Life Thursdays at Buck15 with the entertainers and state-ofthe art lighting, sound, and technology of JUMP! Sundays, Simple Life Thursdays at LUX is destined to become one of the hottest dance events in South Florida. I recently sat down with Edison to get the inside scoop on the grand opening of Simple Life Thursdays at LUX and was very happy to learn that we are certainly in for a treat! Check it out: How has Simple Life Thursdays evolved over the years? People constantly tell me that it is their favorite night of the week. It has been a very consistent night for all of these years. I would say that the faces have changed over the years, but the party has not changed too much. Why do you think Simple Life Thursdays has been such a success? It is fun. There is no attitude; just fun, fun, fun. Some have referred to it as “the frat party that we never had”.

What is one of favorite memories of Simple Life Thursdays at Buck15?

looking forward to bringing an exciting new event to the community.

There was a point in time when Daisy would play a specific song and she, Chyna, and all of the staff would just stop working, jump up on the couches, and start dancing. It was so much fun. Soon, all of the customers would start to jump up on the couches as soon as they heard the song come on.

I understand that you already have some amazing events taking place at the new Simple Life Thursdays space. Can you tell me a little bit about that?

How did JUMP! Sundays come about, and what was the concept of that event? Gerry Kelly approached me about starting a night at LUX. I think that we are ready to have a big club night again, and the space has a great history with the gay community with all of the memories of Liquid back in the 90s. So, I figured that it would be a great fit. We started with top entertainment and DJs and it went on for six months. But, then I decided to combine the night with “The Simple Life” Thursdays. Why did you decide to combine both Simple Life Thursdays and JUMP! Sundays into a onenight extravaganza? When I was told that Buck15 was about to close, I wanted to keep the party going. They will be opening a new Buck15 in a different location; however, I did not want there to be a time lapse in between. What is the next evolution/concept of Simple Life Thursdays now that it will be at LUX? It will be like the old Thursday night party but on steroids! We now have a superb nightclub with a light show, stage, and spotlights. We will take full advantage of this with performances by the best South Florida entertainers. DJ Daisy D will still be on board for the music. She is a brilliant open-format DJ! What are you most looking forward to about moving this party to a new fabulous space? As much as I loved the old space and the many great memories, I am excited about a new beginning. I am

GRAND OPENING

8 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

The first week will be Thursday, April 7th for the Grand Opening. The following week is my annual birthday bash. And, just a few weeks later, we are hitting the Six Year Anniversary of “The Simple Life”. Why do you think it is important to have such a big Thursday night? The club scene went through a several year stretch where the “lounge” was the big trend, but I think that people will appreciate being in a larger nightclub again. Thursday night is a big club night. People are ready for the weekend and itching to go out. What are your hopes for this new weekly party? I hope to have the same energy that we had at Buck15, but we can fit tons more people in this venue. So, hopefully, it will turn into a fun-filled dance party with lots of entertainment. Are you working with any other entertainers/performers on this event? Daisy D will DJ, plus host and perform in a weekly show. We will be booking the top drag queens, singers, and some specialty acts that will get a rise out of the crowd. What other projects are you working on? At this point, this is my main focus. It will take a great deal of planning to get this party to the level that I would like to take it to, and I know it is going to be amazing!

hotography can say a lot about a person, especially as it relates to the model and the photographer. How a person feels at a particular moment, how a person views him or herself, and how a person views others can all be captured and put on display in something as simple as a snapshot. It seems that no one knows that better than local photographer Abel Cruz. As a natural born artist, Abel has constantly looked for mediums that would allow him to express his more creative side. From theater to interior design to writing, Abel has seemed to dabble in it all. Four years ago, upon the insistence of his boyfriend, Jorge Freire, Abel discovered the amazing world of photography and has been hooked ever since. Over the past few years, Abel has refined his skills, while photographing some of the sexiest models in the business. Looking through his portfolio is like looking through a collection of Greek Gods. Chiseled bodies in provocative poses evoke sensuality and definitely spark a little fire within oneself. We have been so impressed by Abel’s work, we decided to dedicate our quarterly Hot Models Calendar Issue to his fabulous photography; however, before you take in all the eye candy, check out what Abel had to say in a brief interview.

Where are you from? I am originally from Nicaragua. My mother, sister, and myself escaped persecution from the Sandinistas when they took over the Nicaraguan government. They were looking for all military families and having them executed. My father fled early on and left us behind to fend for ourselves, or rather left my mother to fend for us, as my sister was only six-years old and I was five. Somehow my mother got us out after being in seclusion for a few weeks. How did you get into photography? I actually took on photography on the insistence of my boyfriend and previously featured photographer Jorge Freire. I needed a creative outlet, always have. After having a falling out with a theater group I was with, I decided to take Jorge up on his request and started taking pictures in March of 2007. What do you hope to accomplish with your photography? I hope to, first and foremost, inspire people and keep inspiring myself. Hopefully someday I will be able to do this for a living, whether it be as a freelance editorial photographer, exclusively for a magazine or photo studio. It is something I really enjoy doing and would like for it to take a more prominent space in my life. I am also working on a book. Hopefully it will be ready to send out to publishers by the end of this year.

What is your favorite thing about shooting someone? My favorite thing is creating. Whether there is a story line or not, when a strong image comes about from a shoot, you just feel it. I love working together with the models and creating. I truly believe that it’s as much the models effort as the photographers that make these incredible images. We both would be nothing without the other. I have been lucky to have worked with a few celebrities and amazing models.

ful that you sort of develop a crush for during that moment. It almost seems necessary to have that “feeling”, as what ever you feel translates into the photograph. You can look at a photograph and tell what the photographer was feeling, what the model was feeling, and if they trust each other, etc. Like they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Mostly, these guys are my friends, and when we are working together, it’s like working with a brother or a sister. We are family in our studio, but there are a few people that have made my heart skip a beat.

You have photographed some of the hottest guys in the biz. How did that come about?

Who has been the most scandalous to photograph and why?

I have been very lucky to be approached by them. I am very shy by nature and, more often than not, I would be approached and I would say, “Really? You want to shoot with me?” Miami is overflowing with talented photographers. I like to think that I stand out a bit for these models, as I treat them with respect, develop a friendship with each of them, and am fully aware that whatever images we produce; we are both equally responsible for doing so. When shooting people, it is always a collaboration.

I would have to say Charles Perez, former Channel 10 correspondent. We did a shoot for another magazine where I placed a pink triangle on his suit. It had dark lighting and a dark feel to it. We wanted the image to project the discrimination and persecution he had felt during his final days of working for the station. The image surfaced on several sites and was even on the news. It got the point across.

Some of your pictures are incredibly provocative. Is it difficult to stay focused when you are photographing someone so gorgeous?

Where can people see more of your photography?

Oh my God! You know there has been a few times where I get really shy with some of my models. There is a hand-

The Ultimate Cocktail Scene!

WIRED ON: MENTAL HEALTH

BY DR. GREGG A. PIZZI, PSYCHOLOGIST

ROMANTIC RECOVERY Ending a relationship is often a stressful experience. Regardless of the circumstances of the breakup or who initiated it, moving on can be hard. This week, I’d like to share with you a few ideas that can help you or someone you care about get through this challenging time a little more easily. Realize that any breakup is a loss and you need to grieve. Even if you feel relief because the relationship had gone sour or was filled with conflict, it is still normal to feel a sense of loss. You may be surprised that you feel worse than you expected you’d feel. Don’t try to change, minimize, or deny your feelings, but rather ride them out. Everyone reacts differently to breakups, and you will recover on your own timeline and in your own way. There should be no rush to feel better and ‘move on,’ nor are there any rules about how one is supposed to feel or for how long. Accept the support of friends and family (if you find them to be supportive of you), and express your feelings openly to a few people whom you trust. However, do not allow people around you to say negative things about (i.e., “trash”) your ex, since this is not support and will actually prevent you from healing. Develop new interests, using the extra time you now have freed-up to explore pleasurable activities that you may have wanted to try, or to follow-up on friendships and activities you may have placed on hold. Be very careful not to fall into self-destructive behavior due to feeling sad, hurt, angry, or lonely. Abusing

alcohol or drugs, isolating, sleeping all day, compulsively hooking-up, and binge-eating are all destructive behaviors that will not make you feel better, but damage your selfesteem. Keep busy. Arrange to be with friends on “date night” and avoid being alone. Stay active through regular exercise and doing things that are fun and make you laugh. Avoid being around people who are not affirming, supportive, or positive. This is not the time to be around individuals who will make you feel worse. You need to surround yourself with people who will lift up your spirits and help you see the beautiful things in life. If you are left with strong negative feelings toward your former partner, it’s important to find a constructive way to express them. A great way to accomplish this is to write a letter to him or her – which you don’t actually send – and this can help you gain closure. Over time, you may find it necessary to forgive your ex for the things he or she did to hurt you. Identify what would need to happen for you to let go of your negative feelings. When you forgive another, you are actually the one who receives the greatest benefit. If you need to forgive yourself for anything about the relationship, then do so. Holding onto anger or guilt about your contribution to the relationship’s problems will keep you from forming a bond with the next person who comes into your life. You may need to work with a psychotherapist

to resolve these feelings, and it may take time, however it is essential to moving forward. Even if the breakup was amicable, it may be helpful to avoid contacting your former partner, at least for a while. You need to create some space between you so you can work through your feelings and establish your new life without him or her as your partner. Work on building your relationship skills. Identify what you have learned, what areas you need to improve on, and make a plan for developing those skills. Buy some books, attend relationship seminars or workshops, or work with a therapist. Do whatever you need to do to prepare yourself for a more successful and satisfying relationship in the future. Dr. Gregg A.
