A Free Financial and Estate Planning Event Designed Especially for Women Join us for wine, hors d’oeuvres and a little fun as we discuss: Planning ahead for life’s rough spots

Tools for women to build and protect savings

Tuesday, October 22, 2019 Appetizers & Drinks 4:00 p.m. Event 4:30 p.m.

Advice and resources from local female professionals

Specific financial and estate planning issues that affect women

503-485-7224 Creekside Country Club Salem, Oregon

“Money is simply a tool we use to pursue what we care about. Knowing how to wield this tool can be anything but simple. Every day, I have the privilege of sitting across the table from client families, each of whom come in with a different money story. This is the story that their experience has told them about what money is and what role it plays in their life. Each of us has a money story that drives our individual motivations, actions and perceptions. Sometimes, it also enables our obstacles. As women, we have plenty of those standing between us and money. We still make .80 cents on the dollar compared to our Brenna male counterparts Baucum, CFP® and we are typically The H Group, Inc. the caretakers to our children and parents. Combine these two serious forces and we can be behind before we really start. It’s no wonder less than half of us feel comfortable about long term planning, much less with the investments that play a role in getting us there. Those statistics can do one of two things: they can be a crutch, or a catalyst. It’s really difficult to show up strong in your life without a strong money story. Know your worth and you can own your worth.”

“As women tackle estate planning issues, we do so on two fronts: for our parents and for ourselves. For our parents, we help them navigate their declining health. Around two thirds of caregivers are women. When we provide care, we dedicate more hours to those roles than male caregivers. We step in to handle medical decisions or manage finances. It is critical to ensure you have the legal tools at hand to empower you to support your loved ones as they age.

“Every day, families in our community are dealing with the most difficult part of life – facing the end of it. Whether we are family caregivers for an aging or ill loved one, dealing with a serious illness ourselves, or wanting to plan ahead to ease the burden on our children when that time comes, these can be difficult conversations to have.

For ourselves, we are the ones who will handle our household finances and logistics in later years. Everywhere in the world women are living longer than men. For many of us, that means we will step in and make medical and Stephanie financial decisions for Palmblad, JD our spouses. We will Collier Law face the challenges of our spouses’ incapacity and death and continue walking forward in life without their support. I am passionate about ensuring that women are actively engaged in the estate planning process. We all have the right and responsibility to understand how and when our loved ones will step in to support us. I challenge you to not only educate yourselves about the estate planning tools available to you, but to also ensure that the women you know and love are making a plan for their future.”

I feel privileged to be able to help prepare families for these conversations and offer tools to help in these inevitable rough times that life throws our way. As women, we tend to do Melissa more caregiving, Lindley often for both parents and Outreach Coordinator Willamette Valley Hospice children at the same time. We are called upon to support our friends when someone close has died. It’s common to feel overwhelmed with these responsibilities. Fortunately, there are resources to help us in this important work. I’m honored to be part of a team to walk alongside women during these journeys and offer expertise to help you make the best decisions for yourself and your family.”

Life is a Moving Target, But Your Worth Never Changes Regardless of Life’s Circumstances! By: Bobbi Jo Heagy Dear Beautiful Sisters, I’ve got good news!!! Truth wins! Truth ALWAYS wins. Truth is what sets us free. How easy it is to believe a lie about who we are based on the ups and downs of life? I’m so done with the lies that yell, “You’re not worthy!” “You’re not good enough.” I’ve seen too many I love, including me; be held back, held down, and held prisoner because of a lie.

ever know! You are precious and priceless! Everyday of your life matters - YOU matter. Your future has a plan and purpose filled with peace, hope, and abundance with YOUR NAME assigned to it. Honor your story, own it, and remember you have the CHOICE to write the ending founded on TRUTH. And so, I invite all women to say, “Shut up Lies! Get out of here! You’re not welcome anymore. I CHOOSE to believe in the TRUTH.”

Truth removed shame off of me and now I want all women to know what it is to live from a place of worthiness, fully ALIVE! When the foundation of who we are is built on Truth, it opens the doors to freedom. An empowered life of freedom leads to the discovery of ALL our unique gifts and the path of unimagined purpose, passion, and fulfillment.

I leave my baggage of remains behind where it belongs.

TRUTH: You are loved more than you will

I AM loved.

I choose to rise up, step up, look up and fix my eyes on the target that says, I AM. I AM worthy. I AM enough.

Girlfriends Are Good For Your Health STANFORD UNIVERSITY, MIND-BODY CONNECTION THE BENEFITS OF FEMALE RELATIONSHIPS: I have a wonderful, supportive group of girlfriends in my life that will gather together to celebrate at the drop of a dime, or a good lemon drop. They range in age and talents, and bring color, learning, and laughter into my life. We are a powerful force of strong women, woven together into a fabric that embraces individuality, creativity, acceptance, and forgiveness. We stand fast, supporting each other to be the best we can be. When one succeeds, we celebrate. When one falls down, we lift them up. “One of the best things a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman, whereas for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends.” I just finished reading an article about a lecture given during a class at Stanford University on the mind-body connection—the relationship between stress and disease. http://stresshealthcenter.stanford.edu. Dr. David Spiegel, the head of psychiatry at Stanford said, among other things, that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman, whereas for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends.

Women connect with each other differently than they do with men and provide support systems that help each other to deal with stress and difficult life experiences. Physically this quality “girlfriend time” helps us to create more serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps combat depression and can create a general feeling of well-being. Women share feelings whereas men often form relationships around activities. They rarely sit down with a buddy and talk about how they feel about certain things or how their personal lives are going. Jobs? Yes. Sports? Yes. Cars? Yes. Fishing, hunting, golf? Yes. But their feelings? Rarely. Women do it all of the time. We share from our souls with our sisters, mothers, daughters, girlfriends, co-workers, and evidently that is very good for our health. He said that spending time with a friend is just as important to our general health as jogging or working out at a gym. There’s a tendency to think that when we are exercising we are doing something good for our bodies, (which we are) but when we are hanging out with friends, we are wasting our time and should be more productively engaged. This, he explained, is simply not true. In fact, he said, failure to create and maintain quality personal relationships with other humans is as dangerous to our physical health as smoking! Every time you ladies hang out and schmooze with a gal pal, just pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for doing something good for your health! We are indeed very, very lucky.

Apparently everyone laughed, but he was serious.

From 9 years ago to today – A Bakers Dozen of Ya Ya’s! So, let’s all toast to lazy summer days, the promise of sunshine and new growth, and the friendships with our girlfriends. Cheers! Evidently it’s very good for our health. XO, Bon Bon Bonnie Milletto, Empowerment Speaker | Author | Event Emcee

By Cynthia Aks,

DO, FACOS, ABIHM, Surgical Oncologist AH THE BREATH_ OUR LIFE FORCE. THE FIRST THINGS WE DO WHEN WE ARE BORN AND THE LAST WHEN WE DIE. Breathing is the process of taking air into and expelling it from the lungs with exchange of gases with the internal environment. Oxygen is drawn inward, and carbon dioxide is expelled outward. Breathing is mostly an involuntary act however it can also be voluntary, i.e. we have the ability to control it. Much like vocalist or horn instrumentalists, the learned control of the breath can provide many benefits. Breathing techniques can have a positive effect on our nervous system and allow for the activation of the nourishing and relaxing part of the autonomic nervous system (parasympathetic) and the calming of the excitatory part (sympathetic). Pranayama is the Sanskrit word that refers to the regulation of breath through various techniques and exercises. Oxygenation of the blood through breathing is vital for assimilation of our food which provide component for rebuilding tissue and energy supply, providing energy to the brain, heart and other vital organs. The benefits of pranayama are that its energy flows throughout the body, aides in elimination of toxin and helps to bridge the mind and body. When we learn to control our breath, we can more easily control our mind. Increasing oxygenation can aid in weight loss by increasing energy and metabolism, helps to “massage internal abdominal organ to facilitate fat burning. promote better mood, sleep and cognition. There are different phases of breath: inhale, exhale and the pauses between the two. There is a proper way to breath to optimize gas exchange. Breathing through your nose and down to your

belly as your diaphragm contracts allow for more efficiency of breath, this creates a greater negative pressure in the chest which results in the inflow of air. Take a moment to notice how you are breathing. Is your breath short, shallow, rapid? Or long, deep and fluid? Do you fill up just the more upper areas of the lung or are you easily using your abdominal muscles to get air deeper into the base of your lungs? Are you expanding your ribcage in a more 360 fashion or does it seem that only the front of the chest moves? Are you having to recruit accessory muscles of breathing e.g. the muscles in the upper shoulder girdle to help raise the chest on inhalation? You can easily “google” on You Tube many different types of deep breathing technique that will help to optimize wellness. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle also helps the efficiency of the functioning lung. Avoid large meals and foods that might leave your bloated to prevent pressure pushing on the diaphragm and impairing its movement. Maintaining good hydration in order for any secretions to be thinner and to maintain humidity of our mucous membranes. Pay attention to air quality as particles e.g irritants, allergens and pollutants adversely affect the tiny, thin, fragile membranous air sacs in the lung where gas exchange occurs One simple mindful breath exercise is described below. Others e.g Alternate nasal breathing, Progressive relaxation breathing, Equal Breathing, Kapalabahti, Abdominal breathing and the like can be found on You Tube. Try out different technique and notice how they each make you feel. Diaphragm breathing exercise to do while lying down 1. Lie on your back with your knees bent

and a pillow or rolled towel under your head to support your cervical spine. 2. Place a pillow under your knees to support your legs. 3. Put one hand on your upper chest and the other below your rib cage so you can feel the movement of your diaphragm. 4. Inhale slowly through your nose to your count of 5, feeling your stomach expand to press into your hand. 5. Hold your breath to the count of 3. 6. Engage your stomach muscles and draw them toward your spine as you exhale slowly through your mouth and empty your lungs completely as you try to release any tension in your muscles. 7. Continue the inhale and exhale deeply for 5-10 minutes. 8. As you complete the exercise, come to a normal breath and notice how your feel. After you learn this breathing technique lying down, you may wish to try it while sitting in a chair. This is slightly more difficult. Then once you feel comfortable with these technique in this way you can progress to practicing them when you are exerting yourself l whether that be on a walk, exercising, working in the garden, carrying something heavy, climbing stairs etc. Practicing mindful breathing multiple times a day is an easy first step toward practicing mindful presence in other aspects of your life So, go forth my friends and JUST BREATHE!

What Do Organizational Culture And Slime Have In Common? Dr. Kristine Medyanik

Industrial/Organizational Psychologist Like many of you, my inspiration and epiphanies happen at the strangest times and sometimes in strange ways. A couple months ago I was asked to speak at an event for incredible women in banking. The following days were spent considering which direction I wanted to go with the discussion. The challenge with culture as with many models in organizational psychology is that there are so many models. One evening, as I was cooking dinner my youngest was playing with neon green slime at the counter. It was sticky, and oozing into all the cracks between his fingers and he was laughing and having a great time. Like a million bricks, it hit me, that organizational culture behaves much like slime. Now hang with me for a little bit. If culture was tangible, we’d see that is sticks in areas that its both invited and areas in which is simply oozes unattended. Now, to further emphasis a potentially silly metaphor, I will also say that last year a bucket of unattended slime was set on a top cabinet and left overnight. Now it seems harmless and contained but throughout the course of the night it expanded and spilled down the face of my hardwood cabinets changing the color of the touched surface to a purple. Much like culture, it can be fun and inspiring and build connections, or ignored and left without intention it can cause significant damage. As I started to build my discussion points for the Global Women’s Leadership Network I continued to think of how something so intangible can be a source of competitive advantage or significant costs to a company. Culture is a product of leadership

behavior, whether that behavior is intentional or not, culture will still form and creep into the cracks and crevices of your employee behaviors. Signs of a healthy culture include innovation and people feeling as though they have a voice. While dysfunction can be often be easier to identify. Some of the signs of an unhealthy culture might include high turnover, high levels of gossip, resistance to change, management maintaining distance from the day to day activities of the organization and unhealthy competition among employees. It’s important to remember that a healthy workplace will multiply success, it is not a level that can only be achieved by a few. Here’s the big question-what role do you play and what are your contributing to the organizational culture. Do you approach difficult situations with a solution or a complaint? Do you hope that people will behave just like you? Or do you celebrate all the differences. This is the difference between cabinet destruction slime, and 2 hours of creative play and adventure. The good news is, that even the damage can be repaired. That you can shape the slime/culture into whatever you want, even if it might be a slow progression. For more insights into my professional/mom/wife/entrepreneur brain I’m happy to connect at one of your professional development engagements or lunch and learn. Wrote My Way Out By Kymberlin Bush I used to believe that power only came from repressing my emotions. Stoicism and the ensuing assumption of masculinity have controlled much of my life and I have often prided myself on my ability to not talk about my emotions. On January 23rd, 2019, my grandma, my best friend, passed away from an unexpected and vicious heart attack. I was in Ireland studying abroad, 4,500 miles away from her and my family. It was through grieving her loss in another country, another culture, that I began to redefine my idea of power. For many days that turned into weeks after my grandma’s death, I felt as if I had lost all the power within me. There was no fire, no desire burning, no drive to do anything but survive the waves of grief and loss that washed over me and drowned every ounce of motivation I had left.

I finally managed to find my power where it has always been, in my writing. As a 4th year Creative Writing major, the act of writing has always been an act of escape and passion for me. I was repeatedly told to write my way out of the hole my grandma’s death put me in and I repeatedly thought, “How am I supposed to write anything when I feel like this?” It was only after I sat with my frustration that I realized: I didn’t have to write the next Great American Novel. I didn’t have to write anything anyone would ever read at all. I didn’t have to work on my fiction, I didn’t have to make something perfect, I didn’t have to write blog posts or articles or literary criticism. So, I purchased a black journal from Tesco with my weekly groceries and I found my power again. I wrote my way out.

IT'S NOT YOUR JOB TO BE PHOTOGENIC IT 'S MY JOB TO TAKE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPH YOU HAVE EVER SEEN OF YOURSELF BY JENNIFER ASTORGA

"I'm not photogenic." "I need to loose 20 pounds first." "I hate the way I look in photographs." My name is Jennifer, I am a professional lifestyle, portrait and branding photographer. I completely understand each statement above and can relate myself because I too have used those same excuses until I finally decided it was time I get out from behind the camera and get in front of it. Honestly it was the best experience and it truly changed the way I see myself. I invite you to a personal portrait session with me. It will change the way you see yourself. It's not your job to be photogenic it's my job to take the most beautiful photograph you will cherish forever.

Therese Misner Contemporary Design It’s a privilege to create art that gets to be shared in people’s private spaces. For over the past decade I have had the opportunity to have my art collected across the United States and in six countries. Art adds so much happiness to my life and I am grateful to share it with others. Every piece is unique and I am humbled every time one goes to a new home.

“Art to me is a necessary escape from our complicated lives. My goal is to share art that is a daily reminder of the simple beauty that can still be found in this hectic world. Inspired by everyday objects from life I attempt to capture their abstract characteristics in texture, line, and color. I paint in a loose rustic style, starting each piece with a plan and finishing with a journey of imagination.” Therese Misner

that had begun seven years earlier in middle school track.

Squat Like a Man K. Bush

I never expected to be the kind of person who stayed late after the end of my shift to work out in the office gym. But here I am. I have been active my entire life. For many years I was even considered to be a competitive runner with a bright future in collegiate endurance racing. After a run with my high school team down a mountain, my knee began to ache, and it felt as if the bottom half of my left leg was turned in the opposite direction of the top. So, I joined the Pacific University Cross Country and Track & Field team injured and pushed through for two seasons before putting an end to the running career

In the spring of that year I joined a class called Strength Training for Women. For the first time in my life, I was taught to lift weights in a way that worked for my body. I learned that my previous (male) coaches had, through no fault of their own, taught me how to lift like a boy, or rather, a man. She empowered and encouraged us to be our best in a world that does not always provide an environment in which to find our power. I found my power in a venue that I had previously been too intimidated to enter. I was able to go to the gym alone and use the squat racks and different machines without feeling embarrassed or like I didn’t know what I was doing. Now, when I wobble down the stairs of my office before falling into my way-too-warm car in the parking lot, I again feel the power I found that semester. So, I stay long after work than I would always like to, and I spend an hour or two focusing only on myself and I find that power. Over and over again.

1. In a food processor, combine all ingredients except the muesli and blend together until a sticky dough forms. 2. Measure 1 cup of muesli in a medium bowl, then add the carrot mixture. Using your hands, mix together the muesli and carrot mixture. 3. Once your dough is well mixed, take about 1 tablespoon of the mixture and roll it into a ball. Place on a plate or baking sheet, and then finish rolling the rest of the dough out. Refrigerate for 1 hour, then enjoy! Makes 25 balls. www.bonniemilletto.com

Change Your Vantage Point, Change Your Life By Michele Wells I AM HERE TO TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE THE POWER TO BEAT ALL ODDS AND BE WHOMEVER YOU DREAM OF BEING! My childhood was not picture perfect. I grew up with parents who were drug addicts, they were not abusive but their substance abuse made them absent parents. I was the oldest of four kids and I remember that, at times, we had little or no food in the house and I would need to take on the role of parent to feed my sisters and brother. There were times that I wanted to be a kid and hang out with my friends but I didn't because who would take care of my family? I rarely remember family meals. My parents never stressed how important my education was. I was never told I had the power to conquer the world and I never knew that girls should always be respected and held in high esteem. Today none of that matters, I love my Mom and Dad for doing what they could with the skills that they had. Forgiveness, however, did not come overnight or without struggles of my own! Here is how I became the “me” that I am so proud to be. At 17 I was kicked out of my home. I started to resent my parents and call them out on what they were doing and they didn't appreciate the way I was behaving. I moved in with my sister’s best friend. Not long after I started dating her brother, he ended up being my first husband and father of my three amazing kiddos. It went by so fast: I married when I was 18, had my first son when I was 19, a daughter when I was 20 and a second son when I was 21. The entire length of our relationship I was abused. I could handle the physical abuse, bruises fade and injuries heal. I could handle the emotional abuse just by turning myself off. I could even handle the mental abuse because I too believed I was useless, but in all the mix of all these things, he broke my spirit. The only way to survive was to forget who I was or whomever imagined I could be. I lost myself and I never thought I would have the strength to leave this man. All along I felt like I just needed to fix him, but I was the one who was broken. Over the years he was in and out of jail and during his absence little by little I started to find the inner strength and I gained the courage I needed to stand up for myself and leave. Yay me! I felt so strong, little did I know this was only going to be one piece

of the heartache that I would expose myself to. I was independent now and I could do anything, so I started college. I also started a new relationship, with the love of my life and my current husband. I thoroughly enjoyed school for the first time. I made the Dean’s List and found a passion for learning. During school one of my teachers encouraged me to write. With her help, I had an article published in our local paper. I was so proud of my article because it spoke to the drug infestation of our beautiful city and I was hoping to change just one person's life. So sad to think that two days later I started on my own path of addiction. Isn’t karma a really big bitch! This would be the piece of my heartache that blindsided me! Meth...I was an instant addict. Yes, I was a “functioning addict” but looking back I do not think that phrase can be accurate for anyone on methamphetamines. My husband and I were both using and this was not healthy for any part of our relationship, but we made it out together because loved each other and our children so much that we knew that there was no choice in the matter. As an addict, I still strived to be successful. While on drugs we somehow won custody of my husband’s daughters. I so badly wanted to be a good mom to now all five of our children. I had them in sports, we went to the park, we had Michael Jackson dance parties, I was a classroom volunteer, I made dinner on a regular basis and my kids were clean. As time went on I saw myself becoming the distant parent that I grew up with. When I would hide behind my locked bedroom door to get a fix, the child inside me would remember knocking on my parent's bedroom door just because I wanted to know why they were always in there. EVERY DAY I would cry. I absolutely hated who I was, and struggled with being stuck. There was no light at the end of the tunnel and more than anything I wanted out of this ominous place. I needed to be free, not just for me, but for my kids and for my husband. It was our responsibility to break the cycle of drug addiction. My mom did drugs with her dad, I did drugs with mine but there was no way was I going to let these beautiful babies settle for that lifestyle. I would see to this and the only way to do that was to lead by example. It took some convincing but my husband knew in his heart this was the only way. We had to leave, escape our demons. We packed up a U-Haul with all of our things and took a chance on Oregon. We did not have a lot to go on but my husband lived

in this area for a year as a child, so there was some sense of familiarity. We knew no one and had very limited funds. We had ourselves, our five kids, two dogs, and if I didn’t mention before his parents moved out here with us. We had no choice but to make it work. When we arrived we started out by staying in hotels but resources don’t go far when so many people are being cared for. So we camped…in April...in the Oregon rain. Yes, we were homeless but looking back it was an amazing adventure. Plus when survival is the only focus, you forget about the fact that you are coming off of drugs. After what seemed like an eternity, we finally had a home. I also lucked into a job cleaning at the Embassy Suites. It was hard work but it paid the bills and I was proud to be starting a path of self-sufficiency. While making my rounds I would have to enter the offices of the “really cool kids”. The Director of Sales took a liking to me. She would always take the time to see how I was doing and ask what my goals were. She told me over and over that one day I would work for her and she wasn’t lying. She saw something in me and now, with her never-ending encouragement, I have worked my way up to Senior Sales Manager. Over the past six years, I have been so lucky to have an endless amount of opportunities laid out before me and I get to be in the presence of some of the most wonderful people I have ever known. I feel like I found my way into a beautiful space and I get to be my true self here. I dreamed of being a strong, motivated woman who still gets to be silly and quirky. I dreamed of a family that loves and respects me, and I dreamed of a life that I could be proud to live. Today all those things are a reality and not a day goes by that I do not thank God for everything that I have been through. Without the struggles, I would not be SO grateful for what I have. Without the heartache, I wouldn’t be so open and honest with my beautiful kids (who are all now in high school striving to be successful members of their community). Without addiction, I would not be able to sympathize and love my parents for all the good things that they are. Without my past, I would not be me, and I truly love me! A person’s journey has so many paths and some feel a little more daunting than others. There are some you must climb your way through, some you have to fight and crawl through, and then others you have to sprint through. We are so strong inside and we can conquer the highest of heights once we set our minds to it. There is tremendous beauty in the pain that we face. It is only a matter of changing your vantage point.

This is The Big Tree Where We Grew Up. By Anita Kennedy It could be called the “everything” of our childhood. We climbed, we built, we laughed, we cried, we fell and we loved. And all the while it stood strong. Looking over us. How many secrets were told under those massive branches? How many tears fell on the roots that looked like they were coming out of the ground just so we could have a place to sit? Or were they there because we couldn’t reach the branches for a few years… You see, The Big Tree was the first place our parents let us go without their supervision. It was only about 150 yards from our house but far enough that we had our first taste of independence. Of course, we had to stick together but just the 3 of us and our first adventure. It was the first of many adventures to our favorite “no parents allowed” place. We could sit for hours and talk about our plans or just eat the snack Mom packed because we might get hungry so far from home. My older brother was already building in his mind… As we grew taller we would climb that wonderful tree. My brothers were these amazing creatures that could climb so far up I could only see the bottom of their shoes. My mem-

ories tell me that one of them got stuck up there really high and Dad had to come get him down. Or maybe that’s just what Dad used to say was going to happen “if you don’t pay attention” and my mind’s eye brought it to life. As my brothers got older the inevitable happened, they built a fort in the V of The Big Tree. How excited we were to watch this happen. We were going to have a fort at our favorite get away. They but boards up the side of the tree so we could get to it quickly in case, you know…. Just in case. I remember being a young teenager and sitting on one of the massive roots lost in my own thoughts. And like most teen girls I was just in general lost. My favorite Uncle joined me that day and it is a memory that I will hold dear to my heart forever. I’m not sure if he looked out his back window and saw me sitting there for so long alone or if he himself needed the solace that The Big Tree gave so willingly. Either way I will always remember the sound of his voice and the warmth of his hand as he told me that I would get through this part of my life and barely remember what I was so upset about. He was right. Moving away from your childhood home means

leaving so many things behind. One of the last places I went to before moving out west and my adult life was The Big Tree. Once again, I whispered my secrets, cried and thought, this wonderful tree will be here forever. I wish I would have said Thank you but I am pretty sure The Big Tree knew it was loved. It was like saying goodbye to the freedom and wonder of our childhood. You knew it was an exciting time but sad to leave a place that gave you such comfort. I knew I would come back to this place again someday. Going home after so many years away, my thoughts couldn’t stay away from seeing The Big Tree again. Would other kids have taken over and rebuilt our fort. Would they be sharing their hopes and dreams there like we did? In my mind’s eye it looked exactly as we had left it, big and tall and ready to listen. As you can see that wasn’t the case. I look at The Big Tree now and I wonder if it died of a broken heart. With no one to come sit in it’s branches or on the big roots did it grow old overnight? Thank you Old Friend for the memories you helped create, the secrets that you kept and the comfort you always gave.

Thanksgiving Stuffing Muffins • 6 oz Italian or French Loaf, cut into ½-inch cubes • 10 oz prepared Bob’s Red Mill® Cornbread Mix, cut into ½-inch cubes • ¼ cup unsalted Butter • 2 cups diced Onion • 1 cup diced Celery • ¼ cup Pine Nuts • 1 ½ tsp Poultry Seasoning • 1 Tbsp finely chopped fresh Sage • 1 Tbsp finely chopped fresh Parsley • 1 tsp Kosher Salt • ½ tsp freshly ground Black Pepper • 2 Eggs, lightly beaten • 1 ½ cups Vegetable or Chicken Stock

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Spread the bread and cornbread cubes on a baking sheet in an even layer. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the bread is crisp and light brown. Gratitude Turns What You Have Into Enough By Bonnie Milletto Gratitude requires little time, money or skill, yet offers big rewards. I used to think it was impossible to feel grateful. I was caught up in a cycle of misery because I focused on everything and everyone that was wrong in my life. This created a negative outlook. What did I have to be grateful for? Easy Potato Soup • 6 Tbsp unsalted Butter • 1 cup chopped Onion • 1 cup diced Celery • 4 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce • ½ tsp Garlic Powder • 3 cups Milk • 2 cups Water • 2 cups Bob’s Red Mill® Potato Flakes • 3 tsp Salt • ¼ tsp White Pepper

1. In a medium-sized soup pot over medium heat, begin cooking butter, onions and celery until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. 2. Add Worcestershire to deglaze the pan. Sauté for a minute and then add the garlic powder, stirring to make sure no lumps are left. 3. Add milk and water, bring to a low simmer, and then add potato flakes. Whisk vigorously to ensure no lumps are formed. 4. When you have a smooth soup the consistency of a loose batter, add salt and pepper and mix until combined. Enjoy with the topping suggestions below or on its own! Loaded Baked Potato: Bacon, cheddar, chives and sour cream Parisian Nights: Ham, gruyere, Dijon mustard and butter sautéed mushrooms Artisan: Roasted broccoli, shredded rotisserie chicken, bleu cheese and garlic croutons. Almost Chowder: Diced yellow potato, chopped clams, green onion and bacon Makes 4 servings.

I had shelter, food and a glimmer of hope. Rotating through life in the foster care system for over 16 years took a toll on my self-esteem, however I did not let it hold me down. I wish I could tell you the exact day the light came on inside me and I knew I had to make a change. I don’t remember. What I do remember is the fear and being afraid. Afraid to be happy, afraid to say I mattered, afraid to be myself, afraid of life. I made the decision to start working on my mind – where I focused my thoughts – and began to focus on what was good in my life.

UNSTOPPABLE 2019

Most days I come across people who are complaining about one thing or the other – about how life has treated them unfairly or about how they would be happier if they had more things. Through experience I know money doesn’t buy you happiness; it is a resource that should be used to enhance your experiences. The real value in life is self-love, and meaningful relationships. It’s important to have gratitude for the small things in life and appreciate what you have now, instead of running after what you don’t have. You can miss out on the simple joys and pleasures of life, if you are focused on what you don’t have. It may cause jealously and resentment, because someone may have what you think you should have or be entitled to. Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things - unknown Today my gratitude centers around the big things in my life, such as family and friends, serving others through my work, warm socks, running water, coffee, more coffee, meeting new friends, and the gift of a new day. It’s a choice to be happy and grateful for who you are. Let the people in your life know they matter and be grateful for what they are reaching you. Sing in the shower, smell a flower, play with your pets, walk in nature, look at the clouds and be thankful for your ability to see them. Don’t be afraid to play in the rain and simply express gratitude for being alive. XO, Bonnie

Gratitude turns what we have into enough. For the first time, I felt in control. I made the choice, because it is a choice, to be positive, to be grateful and be happy. When I learned to be grateful no matter what happened in my life, everything in my world started to change . . . for the better. Gratefulness is a strength you are building

GRATITUDE It's when you focus on what you have rather than what you don't.

This One’s For The Girls What started six years ago as an opportunity to help a dear girlfriend find hope has grown to mean so much to many. This conference has meant the world to me. It means I didn’t give up. I stayed vulnerable. I was willing to fail in order to grow. I haven’t always been that way, but each time I step out of my comfort zone it gets easier. When women come together with a collective intention magic happens. Women are connectors. We engage each other heart to heart. When women get in a room to share and dream together, the outcomes are so much larger than our individual dreams and intentions.

“One woman can make a difference, but together we can rock the world.” We have shown with our Amazing You Conference that BIG dreams even with small groups of women can change our communities and create massive positive ripples that can literally change the world. You are strong. You are connected. You are enough. Stay fearless, be you, and always be AMAZING! XO, Bonnie
