Bringing traditional values to a 21st Century Harbourside Since the Apple & Parrot has opened on Torquay’s Harbourside the business has gone from strength to strength. The Apple and Parrot was created to give Torquay something different in the town centre. They cleared out Woody’s and moved away from the same old concept of a bar and a DJ. I personally would highly recommend going along to see and experience one of the most vibrant pubs in Torbay, if we could get a town full of businesses like this, we would be the envy of many!

Caroline Cook I’m Caroline and I present Heart Breakfast with Matt Rogers on Heart Devon. We previously presented at Kiss a bit further up the M5 in Bristol, but the lure of Devon was too much for us and we were delighted to get the chance to work here. I have a demented chocolate Labrador called Ambrose, a fluffy moggy called Pigeon…oh and a gorgeous husband too. Most weekends I can be found out hiking with the dog, hanging out with friends at a nice pub or checking out a film - am a big movie fan. My taste is fairly eclectic though, I like everything from Kill Bill to Monsters Inc. My favourite parts of Devon are too numerous to mention, but they include Salcombe and Mortehoe nr. Woolacombe - I love putting the tent up and watching the sun go down - with some lovely tunes and a cold beer of course. Apart from being a music obsessive, what I love about my job is meeting people - I am extremely nosey! I’m not a fan of Winter and can’t wait for the sunshine, so I can spend all my time outdoors horse riding, body boarding and having barbecue parties. My guilty pleasure is terrible dancing (especially if have consumed too much wine)!

Matt Rogers I’m Matt, and you might have heard me chatting randomly with Caroline on Heart Breakfast. Born in Devon, I had to snap up the chance to come back and work at Heart - it is officially the best place in the UK! I’ve worked in radio for years, and I’ve done everything from presenting right through to wearing a suit and being important… or trying to be. But doing what we do now is definitely the best part - who wouldn’t want to come to work every day, play some tunes, and have a bit of a lark about? It’s hardly even a job! Not married, but I’ve been cohabiting with the girlfriend for 15 years, so I may as well be. We’ve got two cats, who are both a bit mad, but much easier to look after than kids. We’re probably too selfish to have those. I’m a big telly addict, and if it’s anything remotely ‘reality’, I’m there - I’m still in mourning over the demise of Big Brother…

Fresh, Affordable, Quality

At the start of the summer this year a new bar & bistro on the harbour opened quietly after undergoing a major refurbishment. Nobody could have predicted how successful it would become. With a philosophy of offering quality fresh food and drink at affordable prices it quickly became the place to be on the harbour this summer. While others struggled, Offshore flourished. Owner and proprietor Brett Morton says with a smile, “we knew we were onto something before we opened. Offshore has the ideal location in Torquay, and we were offering something a bit different, but to say we were prepared for how successful we became is a mild exaggeration”. As well as quality food and drink served all day and night, Offshore hosts regular successful live music nights.

The Bar

OFFSHORE’S philosophy is to offer quality products at affordable prices, and their bar is no exception. Pete Leysinger, former manager of the Drum Inn, Cockington, and now Bar Manager at Offshore says, “We are proud to support our local Brewery, Bays, by running an annual Offshore Bays Beer Festival which was a great success this year. We also offer our customers a selection of classic cocktails including Cosmopolitans, Mojitos, Long Island Ice Teas, all the favourites, but at prices we can all afford to pay”. Again everyone is catered for, with local cider and a nice variety on the wine list, and again all at prices that won’t break the bank. “During the day our coffee is the same” Pete continues, “it’s freshly ground organic coffee presented with flare, but at prices that we can afford to pay while times are tight. We also have a variety of specialty teas, hot chocolate, as well as a range of freshly made cakes, scones and assorted bar snacks”.

The Food; “Fresh & Affordable”

Offshore has quickly built a strong reputation for offering a fresh bistro menu cooked by well trained staff, but at affordable prices. There are great breakfasts, light lunches and evening meals. Bryan Mitchell, head chef, gained his training and experience cooking fresh seafood in the southern hemisphere and says, “we believe that you don’t need to be rich to enjoy good quality fresh food. Our menu is based around grilled meats and fresh seafood, but there is something for everyone and we’re proud that we offer quality alternatives for vegetarians. All our food is homemade using fresh herbs and local ingredients wherever possible”

The Music

tracks. Brett, a former professional musician himself, says, “We only book the best in the Bay. We quickly realized that acoustic music is ideally suited to our natural oak interior, and we are constantly reminded by customers and artists about how good the music sounds in Offshore”. The Winter

While other businesses around the harbour are closing for the winter, Offshore is still going strong, with Winter Warmers on the menu, including their specialty homemade soups, pies and hot baguettes during the day, and a full festive menu throughout December. The evening menu and live music is still available every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and with attractive promotions on drinks as well Offshore looks set for a very successful winter to match it’s perhaps unexpectedly successful beginning. “It’s nice that several local small businesses have chosen to book their Christmas parties with us” Brett says, and with a few dates still available I know where the What’s On team will be heading for our Christmas party this year!

Christmas Skating Rink and Fun Arena in Torquay at the Riviera Centre Following on from the success of bringing a synthetic ice skating rink to Torquay last year, this year sees its return, along with a lot more! The opportunity to bring the skating rink back to Torquay for the Christmas period along with other activities has been welcomed by the Riviera Centre. Jenny Thompson, Riviera International Conference Centre’s operations manager, said “It’s great news. It was good to see so many enjoying themselves last year and we’re looking forward to even more activities available this year. “ Events company, LAMBCO, will again bring this event to Torbay. Managing Director, Richard Lambert says “This year, in addition to skating, it’s going to be Disney themed and include inflatable slides, bouncy castles, a climbing wall, face painting, temporary tattoos and a Cafe. Plus you can skate with Santa every day up until Christmas. It’s indoors so you can come along, stay all day, and be dry and warm. That Sex Texting Song - By Lady V Released on Nov 29th Local celebrity Lindsey Collard (The Torbados girl) has landed a 2 song record deal with a team involving a top London record producer. If the two songs do well then an album will follow but it is in a completely different style of music to what Lindsey would normally sing. The first single is a dance track aiming at the fun pub and club market and is themed on new technology. “That Sex Texting Song” is the title although I am assured there are no naughty lyrics, just a great dance tune and a lot of fun. Lindsey, who’s passion is theatre said, ‘Even though it is not exactly the kind of music I would normally sing, it is great fun and I think it might just work’ The song came about after her internet success with the Alicia Keys parody ‘Torbados’ written by one of the users on the social network, noddleit.com Lindsey remains down to earth and knows just because it is being released doesn’t mean it will automatically make the

charts, however currently approximately 5,000 downloads will see us enter the top 40. Final contracts will be signed early next week and then the song will be available to purchase on Itunes, HMV, Play, Tesco’s and all the major music download sites on November 29th. A web site is also being put together so that anyone who wants a taster of the song can download a free message tone for use on their phones. A spokesperson for Lindsey has stated that we need the town to support the song, it may not be in everyones taste but it will give the town some much needed publicity if we can get one of our rising talents into the top ten. Rage Against The Machine made it to Christmas number 1 last year with an internet led campaign and we are hoping to do the same. We just need everyone in the bay, the clubs, pubs and radio stations to help us get the ball rolling by playing the song to help us gain the initial exposure.
