A Challenging Schedule

 Tennessee faced four ranked opponent this year in seven dual meets. The team holds wins over No.7 Florida, No. 15 Indiana and Louisville (ranked as high as No. 17 this season). At the Tennessee Invitational, the Big Orange squared off against two more top 25 teams in ninth-ranked Texas A&M and No. 21 LSU.

Flexing It’s Muscle at Home

 For the opposition, the Allan Jones Intercollegiate

Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn., has been a tough place to leave with a victory. In the three-plus years that it has been opened, Tennessee holds a record of 12-3 at the state-of-the-art facility that was formally dedicated on Aug. 16, 2008, replacing the Student Aquatic Center.

Road Warriors

 The Lady Vols have been on the road a lot this season, as five of their first seven meets/invitationals have been away from the friendly confines of the AJIAC. However, being away has not been a problem for UT, as the squad has three dual meet wins on the road as well as placing first at the UNCW Open Water Swim.  The last time UT has been on the road as often as this season came during the 2007-08 campaign, where the team went 3-1 in dual meets and competed in three other invitationals.

HEAD COACH MATT KREDICH Success has followed Tennessee head women’s swimming coach Matt Kredich at every stop of his career, and his six-year tenure on Rocky Top has been no different. Under Kredich’s direction, the Lady Vols have broken all 19 of Tennessee swimming records, had 23 different athletes garner 148 All-America awards and finished in the top-15 at the NCAA Championships for a UT-record six consecutive seasons. Last season, seven Big Orange swimmers combined to earn 28 AllAmerica accolades in 13 events at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Of those 28 certificates, 12 were First-Team honors, as Jenny Connolly, Kelsey Floyd and Lindsay Gendron all earned First-Team accolades individually and on relays. The UT success last season in the pool carried over outside of it, as the Lady Vols were dominant in the academic arena as well. In 2011, UT was named a College Swimming Coaches Association Scholar All-America Team by having a squad GPA above a 3.00. Twenty members of the swimming & diving program were also named to the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll.

COACHES

Ever since Patty Clark starred by grabbing second-place finishes in the 100y and 200y breaststroke en route to leading the University of Tennessee to 10th place at the inaugural NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in 1982, Lady Vol teams and athletes have enjoyed a wealth of championship success. In the 30 years of NCAA Championship competition, 88 Lady Vol swimmers and divers have combined to capture 492 total All-America certificates. The honors have included four NCAA champions and 24 NCAA medalists. At the 1995 NCAAs, Tracy Bonner became the Lady Vols’ first individual national champion, winning the 3-meter springboard. The following year, Nicole deMan captured the first title by a Lady Vol swimmer by claiming victory in the 50y free. Kathy Pesek became the third UT woman in four years to capture an NCAA crown when she won the 10-meter platform two years later at the 1998 championships. In 2008, Christine Magnuson became the second swimmer to capture an NCAA title by winning the 100y fly. In addition to accolades earned by individual athletes, UT has enjoyed tremendous team success, as well. The Lady Vols have placed among the top 20 teams at 24 of the 30 NCAA meets, including a program-best fourth-place finish in 1989. Last season, Jenny Connolly, Kelsey Floyd and Lindsay Gendron each earned First-Team AllAmerica accolades in individual and relay events as UT finished in the top-15 for a school-record sixth consecutive season.

LADY VOLS IN THE NEWS

Two Lady Vol Divers to Compete at NCAA Championships By: Todd Mounce UTLadyVols.com KNOXVILLE — The final number of Tennessee Lady Vol swimmers & divers traveling to Auburn, Ala., for the 2012 NCAA Championships is 11, as Tori Lamp and Jodie McGroarty will join nine swimmers at the national meet as a result of their efforts at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships hosted by Auburn University. Lamp, who solidified her spot Monday after claiming fourth on the 1-meter boards, earned the number one priority spot Wednesday by winning the platform competition. The Knoxville native finished first with a combined score of 619.10, aided by entering the finals with the top prelim tally of 301.65. With the win on the platform, Lamp qualified McGroarty for NCAAs next week. Once a diver earns a priority spot, the rest of her performances are skipped. The priority process continues until 10 differentdivers appear on the list. A redshirt junior, McGroarty finished 20th in the event with a score of 204.65. McGroarty entered the final day of zones ranked as the top competitor who did not hold priority spot, needing just one of the top seven divers who already punched their ticket to the national championships to finish third or better. Her sixth-place performance on the 3-meter boards a day ago seeded her 15th on the priority list, as she made the cut by ranking ninth among the field.

Lady Vols to Send Nine Swimmers to NCAA Championships By: Todd Mounce UTLadyVols.com KNOXVILLE — The NCAA has announced the full national championship field and nine talented Lady Vol swimmers will represent the University of Tennessee at the 2012 NCAA Championships, taking place over March 15-17 in Auburn, Ala. UT will be represented in 11 of the 12 individual swimming events and all five relays over the course of the three-day meet held at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center on the campus of Auburn University. Lady Vols who will be in action are seniors Kirstyn Colonias and Jenny Connolly, juniors Kelsey Floyd and Caroline Simmons, sophomores Alexandria Frasier, Lindsay Gendron, Kate McNeilis and Lauren Solernou and freshman Molly Hannis. “This is a really strong and experienced group of nine swimmers,” Lady Vol head coach Matt Kredich said. “If you look at the composition of this group it really says a lot about our team. We have a great mix of youth and experience. We’re versatile and nationally we’re very competitive.” Seven of the nine Orange and White swimmers have experienced competing at the national championships, with Simmons and Hannis being the two newcomers. Tennessee will look to carry its momentum from the Southeastern Conference Championships, where the team finished runnerup. Held in its home waters at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, UT earned seven event victories, set three conference records and placed third or better in 15 of the 21 events. With Kredich at the helm, the Big Orange has never finished below 13th at NCAAs during his six year at Rocky Top. Last season UT finished in the top 15 for an unprecedented sixth-straight season, grabbing 12th at the national championships. “We’re just excited to compete at the highest level,” Kredich explained. “Performing well at this meet has been the ultimate goal of the season since August, and each person has some big goals specifically for this meet. Now that we’re less than two weeks away, we’re all getting really excited.” Connolly will enter the 100y fly event with the fastest time in the country after she touched in at 51.21 seconds at the conference championships in February. She also holds the second fastest clocking in the 100y back (51.37), an event she has gone undefeated in this year, and will compete in the 200y back. Both medley relays will be poised to make a run at national championships, as the UT 200y MR quartet’s time of 1:35.33 is the best in the nation, while the 400y MR ranks third (3:30.36). Floyd is one the best in the country in fly events, as the 2012 conference champion in the 200y fly recorded the fourth best mark in the event (1:54.65) and holds the sixth best readout in the 100y event (52.08). Swimming in the 200y IM for the first time in her UT career this season, she secured a spot in the event at SECs after a time of 1:58.58. Gendron has top 10 times in the 1,650y free and the 500y free, while she ranks 11th in the 200y free (1:44.51). In the mile, the sophomore’s time of 16:01.38 is the seventh best nationally, while ranking ninth in the 500y free with a clocking of 4:38.74. Hannis and Colonias are the Lady Vols’ top performers in the breaststroke events, as each will compete in both the 100y and 200y breast events. Hannis hold UT’s best time in the 100y event (59.53), to seed her seventh, while Colonias’ mark of 2:10.68 is a Lady Vol best this season. Along with Connolly, McNeilis will be in both back events and the 100y fly. McNeilis has the team’s fastest mark in the 200y back after touching in at 1:54.26, seeding her 12th. Solernou, also a sophomore, will give the Orange and White three competitors in the each of the backstrokes. Simmons will be UT’s lone competitor in the 50y and 100y frees, while she and Frasier will join Gendron in the 200y free competition. The Lady Vols rank in the top 10 in the 200y, 400y and 800y free relays. “We’re deep enough to have some options with our relays that we’ve never had before and I think we’re very well represented across a wide range of events as well,” Kredich said. “We’re excited to have the meet in SEC country. A lot of this group swam in the Auburn pool this summer, so it’s a familiar venue and we have a clear vision of what kind of atmosphere we’ll encounter at the meet.”

Lady Vols beaming about second-place finish at SEC championships By: John Shearer Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — During a good part of the SEC swimming and diving championships Saturday night, second seemed to be the theme for the Tennessee Lady Vols. A second-place finish in the team standings behind Georgia seemed pretty certain early on, and Lindsay Gendron finished a respectable second behind four-time SEC champion Wendy Trott in the evening’s first final — the 1,650-yard freestyle. And in the women’s 200 butterfly at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, Lady Vol Kelsey Floyd was in second as well as she began her last 50 yards. But Floyd decided to give the Tennessee women a change of pace — literally. She was able to pick up enough speed to overtake Teresa Crippen of Florida and win with a time of 1 minute, 54.65 seconds. “I figured that it was close,” said an excited Floyd afterward. “I know when I put my mind to it, I can finish like nobody’s business. I just refused to lose really in that last 50.” The Lady Vols ended up with two firsts on the night, as diver Tori Lamp won the 10-meter platform with 335.50 points over five dives. But victory did not come easy, as the former Bearden High standout had to score 86.40 points on her final dive to overtake Vennie Dantin of Auburn by seven points. “I was worried,” Lamp said. “I had to go out there and do my best. She performed so well. I had to do even better.” The first-place finishes helped move Tennessee a little closer to Georgia’s 781 points. With 629.5 points, the Lady Vols finished ahead of third-place Florida (566), Auburn (509.5) and LSU (347). Tennessee women’s coach Matt Kredich said he was overall very pleased with the program’s first second-place finish since the 1989-90 season. “It’s a big step forward for our program and we’re really excited about finishing second,” he said. Gendron’s second in the 1,650 (16:01.38) was her third runner-up finish of the meet, as she also finished second in the 500 and 200 freestyle to different swimmers each time. If a decathlon-like event existed in swimming in which one needed to be good in multiple events without being great in any of them, Gendron might be suited for it. But she still felt proud with how she did in each event this week. “I’ve been very happy with all my results in the finals,” she said. “I wish I could have gotten first obviously, but there’s things I can change for next time.” Among the other Lady Vol finishers in the finals Saturday, Kate McNeilis had a fourth in the 200 back (1:54.26), Caroline Simmons finished sixth in the women’s 100 free (49.10), Kirstyn Colon finished seventh in the 200 breaststroke, and Gaby Trudeau finished third in the platform diving (289.10). Also, the 400 free relay team of Jenny Connolly, Floyd, Simmons and Gendron finished third (3:15.09) with the third-fastest American time this year.

Lady Vols rack up four gold medals at SEC championships By: Andrew Gribble Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — Tennessee women’s swimming coach Matt Kredich pondered whether the Lady Vols’ performance Friday was a historic night in the program’s history. Senior Jenny Connolly called it “the best Friday evening session we’ve had in a long time.” Four gold medals and a silver medal all within two hours left the Lady Vols beaming after the third night of competition in the SEC women’s swimming and diving championships at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. “The groups that made it really stepped up and performed well tonight,” Kredich said. “We were great tonight. It was really memorable.” The only thing the Lady Vols couldn’t do was catch Georgia. No matter how many races Connolly and her teammates were able to win, Georgia just kept stretching its lead. By the end of the final women’s event, when Connolly picked up her third gold medal of the day as a member of the Lady Vols’ 400-yard medley relay team, the Lady Bulldogs were ahead by more than 90 points. Georgia, with 528 points and one night of competition remaining, sits in good shape to collect its third consecutive SEC title. UT remained in second place for a second consecutive day with 436.5 while Florida (361.5) and Auburn (358) lingered in third and fourth place. On the men’s side, Auburn (535) and Florida (515) are locked in a tight battle at the top. On the line tonight is the Tigers’ streak of 15 consecutive men’s titles. UT (363), Georgia (362) and LSU (295) round out the top five. For the Lady Vols, sitting in second place behind a perennial power such as the Lady Bulldogs didn’t serve as any sort of dampener. The focus, instead, was locked on tonight, where they will look to maintain a position better than last year’s fourth-place finish and maybe — just maybe — catch the Lady Bulldogs. “Georgia’s swimming really well; 100 points is a whole lot to make up in one day,” Kredich said. “So far we haven’t focused on the score. The score ends up being the result of executing things right. “Hopefully tomorrow everybody who swims and everybody who dives has the same kind of enthusiasm and same kind of belief in their ability.” Connolly certainly had that belief Friday. The senior from West Lafayette, Ind., repeated the three-medal performance she notched at last year’s SEC championships, taking gold in the 100 butterfly (51.49 seconds), 100 backstroke (51.37) and the 400 medley relay (3:30.36), an event in which she put the Lady Vols ahead early with a 51.46-second backstroke. Molly Hannis, Kelsey Floyd and Lindsay Gendron rounded out the winning team. “You can never win too many relays,” Connolly said. “It’s so fun.” When it came to catching up to Georgia, which entered the night with a 25-point lead, the Lady Vols’ problem was that it couldn’t collect points in the races where he had fewer qualifiers. In the meet-opening 400 individual medley, Georgia took second (Melanie Margalis), fourth (Jana Mangimelli) and sixth (Nicole Vernon) while picking up points from a handful of swimmers in the consolation round. UT’s lone qualifier, Kennedy Higdon, finished 16th, giving the Lady Vols one point to the Lady Bulldogs’ 61.

Even when Hannis, a freshman, collected a gold medal in the 100 breaststroke, Georgia didn’t let the Lady Vols make up much of the difference, as Michelle McKeehan finished second while Megan Molnar and Shannon O’Malley took seventh and eighth, respectively. The 200 freestyle was good for Gendron (second), but better for Georgia (first, third, fifth and sixth). “What we have is good, quality depth. That’s big,” Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. “Obviously, we have some races where we’ll real, real strong. Thankfully, we got a couple of those left tomorrow.” Despite the comfortable lead, Bauerle remained cautiously optimistic at best. He couldn’t discount what he saw Friday. “Tennessee is just swimming great,” Bauerle said. “This is a great conference meet. If you win a conference here, you’re a pretty darn good team.”

UT divers have success at SECs By: John Shearer Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — The Tennessee swimming and diving teams Thursday continued to prove that their deepest area of strength may be with those who compete in the deepest pool. For the second night in a row during the SEC swimming and diving championships at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, senior Ryan Helms finished first, while Lady Vol Tori Lamp came in second. Helms won the 1-meter springboard with 415.10 points over his six-dive list, while Lamp finished with 381.85 points in the 3-meter, just behind Courtney Forcucci of South Carolina (392.40). The two also found plenty of orange around them during the competition, and not just while receiving congratulations afterward. Vol teammates Mauricio Robles (351.05) and Brent Sterling (274.75) finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the men’s final, while Lady Vol Jodie McGroarty came in eighth. (344.80). Jordan Mauney and Gaby Trudeau also came in 10th place each in the preliminaries to gain valuable team points. “We have a really strong core of divers right now and it’s really special,” said diving coach Dave Parrington. “To have four guys in the top 10 is a really, really special thing to do. And it’s a special thing to win both springboards. “And with Tori, I was extremely pleased. It was a personal best by over 30 points.” Lamp, a redshirt sophomore, actually could have scored even better had she not missed her second dive, a back 2½. “I’ve been struggling with it lately, but I hit the rest of my dives, so I was extremely pleased,” said the Bearden High graduate, who is competing in her first SEC meet. Helms also found room for improvement, but he was still quite pleased with not only where he finished, but also with where he was able to enjoy his wins. “It’s really cool to win both the 1-meter and 3-meter in my home pool,” he said. “I’m definitely excited about that.” Helms helped the Tennessee men to a third-place tie with Georgia at the halfway point of the competition. With 208 points, they are behind Auburn (301) and Florida (276) and ahead of LSU 168. Georgia leads the women’s division with 274 points, followed by Tennessee (249), Auburn (228.5), Florida (198.5) and LSU (176). In the swimming events, Lady Vol Lindsay Gendron had an inspiring second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4 minutes, 38.74 seconds), as she broke her own school record and, at worse, held her position over the last lap or two. “I know I could have gone faster and I know I made some mistakes in that race, but it gave me a lot of excitement for the NCAAs of what I can do,” said the sophomore. In the other women’s finals, Lady Vol Kelsey Floyd finished fourth in the 200 individual medley (1:58.58), Caroline Simmons and Jenny Connolly tied for fifth (22.32) in the 50 free and the 200 free relay team of Simmons, Kat McNeilis, Connolly and Gendron came in third (1:28.86). For the Tennessee men, Tristan Slater (1:;47.40) finished eighth in the 200 IM, and the 200 free team of Ed Walsh, Samuel Rairden, Jacob Thulin and Ricky Henahan (1:19.05) came in third.

UT 200y medley relays win on day one of SECs By: John Shearer Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — Tennessee diver Ryan Helms struggled a little in the 3-meter preliminaries of the SEC swimming and diving meet Wednesday afternoon in finishing fourth, but he survived and advanced. In the evening finals with the top eight competitors starting again from scratch at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, the senior favorite from Moultrie, Ga., thrived, winning his first SEC title. His 446.20 points over six dives put him nearly 20 ahead of runner-up Greg Ferrucci of Kentucky and within a point of his personal best. “It felt great,” he excitedly said after getting his gold medal after two silvers last year. “It felt like all of my training had paid off. It felt great just to be here at my home pool in front of my family and in front of my team and in front of my friends.” Helms’ diving coach, Dave Parrington, was proud to see him bounce back in the finals. “He was having kind of a rough preliminary, but still making the finals helped him relax,” he said. “And this evening, he was extremely focused.” His efforts — combined with a third from fellow Vol diver Mauricio Robles (412.90) — helped the Tennessee men battle to a tie with 15-time defending champion Auburn (106 points) after the first of the four-day meet. Behind them are LSU and Georgia (73 each) and Kentucky (71). In the women’s competition, the Lady Vols’ hold the first-day lead, thanks in part to a near national record time of 1 minute, 35.33 seconds in the 200-yard medley relay by Jenny Connolly, Molly Hannis, Kelsey Floyd and Caroline Simmons. The team was undefeated in the event all year, and it apparently felt little pressure Wednesday. “We just honestly had fun and stuck to the plan of trying to be ‘thinkless’ and do what we knew how to do,” said the junior Floyd, who swam the butterfly. Fellow Lady Vol Tori Lamp, meanwhile, definitely spent plenty of time thinking about her event, finishing a somewhat surprising second in the 1-meter. “She probably would not have been picked to be second,” Parrington said. “She’s a real gamer and she got up and competed really well against an excellent field.” Her 326.25 points put her less than seven behind winner Vennie Dantin of Auburn. Fellow Lady Vols Gaby Trudeau (315.10) and Jodie McGroarty (311.05) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. The Lady Vols — who also had a third in the 800 free relay (7:03.63) — have 118 points. Behind them are Auburn (101), LSU (74), Georgia (72) and South Carolina. (67). The Tennessee men finished fourth (1:26.73) and fifth (6:29.49) in the 200 medley and 800 free relays.

Jenny Connolly helps UT snap skid against Florida in home finale By: John Shearer Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — Jenny Connolly was admittedly feeling a little sentimental going into her final home dual swim meet Saturday against No. 2 Florida. “I was trying really hard to put those feelings away and not think about that,” the Tennessee senior from West Lafayette, Ind., said. However, by the end of the meet, when 10th-ranked Tennessee (6-1, 3-1 SEC) had secured its first victory ever over Florida after 25 previous losses, she had changed to feeling ecstatic. “It was the best meet I have ever seen my team as a collective whole do,” she excitedly said after Tennessee’s 178-120 win over the Gators (7-2, 3-2) at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center. “It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. It’s never been done in all of history.” Lady Vol coach Matt Kredich was pretty excited as well, although he tried to remain more controlled with plenty of work still to do in the season. “It certainly felt good,” he said. “It’s hard to put something like that in perspective.” Even if Tennessee had not been able to pull off the big victory, Connolly might still have managed at least a smile, as she set two records in two individual races and was a member of two winning relay teams. Her time of 52.83 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke was a pool record and season-best time, while her time of 52.33 seconds in the 100 butterfly also broke a pool record. Connolly was actually focusing more on her strokes than her time and was not really thinking about any records. “What I think about more is racing and beating my personal best,” she said. “That was the focus. If a record come along, so be it.” Also having a big senior day was Tennessee diver Gabrielle Trudeau in the 1-meter. Her 314.40 points over six dives set a pool record. Other seniors recognized were Abbie Alton, Lindsay Brackens, Kirstyn Colonias, Maddie Garrett, Samara Gelb, Caitlin Perks, and Atlantis Wilkins. “Our seniors were magnificent in the way they raced,” said Kredich. Seniors were not the only ones in the spotlight for Tennessee, as sophomore Lindsay Gendron won the 1,000 free in a pool- and school-record time of 9:39.33. She then came back in less time than that and won the 200 free (1:46.45). With a little more rest later in the meet, she won the 500 free (4:45.37). Freshman Molly Hannis won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.15) and the 200 breast (2:14.35). Junior Kelsey Floyd set a pool record in the 200 butterfly (1:55.27), while junior Jodie Mcgroarty won the 3-meter diving (326.70 points).

Lady Vols Fall at No. 1 Georgia Staff Report Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — The 21st-ranked Vols won five races and swept the two diving events but lost 165-135 to ninth-ranked Georgia in Athens, Ga. In their final road dual meet, a pair of seniors were responsible for two of the Vols’ five victories: Ricky Henahan (100-yard backstroke) and Jake Epperson (200 breast). Freshman Tristan Slater won the 200 individual medley, Sam Rairden won the 100 freestyle, and the 200 individual medley relay team of Henahan, Epperson, Oystein Hetland and Ed Walsh also won. In the women’s meet, UT won two more events than top-ranked Georgia, but the 14th-ranked Lady Vols lost, 169-131. Winners for UT were Lindsay Gendron (200 free, 500 free), Jenny Connolly (100 back), Kelsey Floyd (100 fly, 200 fly), Tori Lamp (3-meter diving), Gabrielle Trudeau (1-meter diving), the 200 medley relay of Connolly, Molly Hannis, Floyd and Caroline Simmons, and the 400 free relay of Connolly, Floyd, Simmons and Gendron.

Tori Lamp wins Georgia diving Staff Report Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — Tennessee’s Tori Lamp won the platform event Thursday at the Georgia Diving Invitational in Athens, Ga. Lamp, a sophomore who starred at Bearden High School and who had finished second on the 3-meter board, posted a score of 315.5 to edge Vennie Dantin of Auburn. UT’s Gabrielle Trudeau took third place. Lamp’s score was a Lady Vol record, topping her mark of 293.85 earlier this season. UT coach Dave Parrington said Lamp’s performance was even more impressive in that she had been under the weather. “She was able to come up from behind on her final dive,’’ Parrington said. “That was a very good way to finish the meet. In men’s competition, Tennessee’s Ryan Helms took third in the platform with a season-best score of 344.95 for six dives. Jordan Mauney took 11th place at 300.25, good enough to qualify him for the NCAA zone championships.

Tori Lamp stands with dad in qualifying for Olympic Trials By: John Shearer Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — Tennessee diver Tori Lamp may not have been on the medal stand’s top landing Sunday, but she still reached a lofty spot — qualifying for the Olympic Trials. Her fifth-place finish in the finals of the 10-meter platform at the USA Diving Winter National Championships at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center easily qualified her. As a result, she was feeling pretty happy. “I’m just really excited,” the redshirt sophomore from Knoxville said. “My father (former UT athlete Danny Lamp) participated in the Olympic Trials in track and field. To have that opportunity just like he did was really important to me, and I also now have a chance to make the team.” Her 15-dive total of 991.10 points put her behind winner Haley Ishimatsu (1,068), former Ohio State diver Katherine Bell (1,046), former Miami diver Brittany Viola (1,017.75) and 17-year-old Jessica Parratto (1,015.45). Lamp had been in position to finish possibly higher, but she did not do quite as well on her third dive as she wanted. “I missed my inwards again,” she said. “It’s becoming a trend, I think. But I hit it this morning (in the semifinals), so that was really good.” Ishimatsu competed in both the individual platform and synchronized platform at the 2008 Olympics and feels she is in good position to try to make another run at qualifying for the 2012 Games. A former gymnast who took up diving after her older sister became involved, Ishimatsu, 19, attended Duke for a year but is taking some time off to train. She plans to enroll later at Southern Cal. Although the American divers were shut out of the medals in 2008, she feels the United States is poised to make a better showing next year. “We got very close last time and I think this time we have the potential to get on the medal stand,” she said. Among the other UT competitors, Ryan Helms finished seventh in the quarterfinals of the 3-meter springboard and advanced to today’s semifinals. Former Vol Michael Wright finished 14th and also advanced. In the other final Sunday, Summer Allman of Lansing, Mich., won the women’s 1-meter.

POWERING THE T: A New Citizen BY Amanda Pruitt; UTsports.com KNOXVILLE — Dave Parrington has coached his divers in dozens of top national and international competitions through the years at Tennessee, but this time will be different. When Tennessee’s Allan Jones Aquatic Center opens its doors Thursday for the USA Diving Winter National Championships, Parrington will be coaching for the first time as an American citizen. The Vols 21-year diving coach completed the final step of his U.S. naturalization process Wednesday with a ceremony at the Howard H. Baker, Jr. United States Courthouse in Knoxville, joined by his wife Marie and extended family. The proceeding completed a three-month process filled with paperwork and taking American civics tests. When the national anthem is played before the competition, no doubt the time-honored pre-event tradition will carry a new meaning for Parrington. From growing up at his parents’ swim club in Zimbabwe to traveling across the ocean to compete for the University of Houston, Parrington knew from the time he was even 14 years old that he wanted to be a coach. “I remember thinking to myself, `This is something that I want to do,’ but even to this day in southern Africa, you can’t really make a living out of it,” Parrington said. “I didn’t know how I was going to do that, but I knew I wanted to coach.” That quest has taken him on a journey literally to every corner of the world, working at the collegiate level in Knoxville and also working with divers at the very highest stages of international competition. Now in every jury duty-, voting-privileged sense, Parrington is officially right at home coaching in Knoxville as four Tennessee divers compete for a spot in next summer’s Olympic Trials. ADVENTUROUS FOLKS At first glance, southern Africa does not seem like an obvious hotbed for high-level athletics. While geographically removed from most of the sports world, however, the old British colony of Rhodesia boasted a strong tradition of competitive diving. That country proved to be the perfect place for the Parrington family, swimmers by trade in England. In the late 1950s, Great Britain was encouraging citizens to move to its colonies in Africa and around the world to places like Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Seeing a good opportunity, the Parrington family moved from England to the colony of Rhodesia, present-day Zimbabwe, a land-locked country that borders South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia. “My folks were adventurous, so they decided to move to Africa, which was great,” Parrington said. “I was about 3 at the time. I don’t really remember growing up before we moved to what was then Rhodesia.” His parents immediately set up shop in their new homeland. His father was the manager of a pool and professional swimming coach; his mother, a two-time Olympic swimmer, coached as well. Not only did his parents run the local swimming club, but they also lived in a house right across the street from the pool. There was no doubt where Parrington was going to spend his free hours day-in, day-out. “The pool was a 30-second walk from where we lived,” Parrington said. “I’d get back from school, do homework, and be over at the pool as quick as I could be. I spent my life in the water.” When he wasn’t swimming, he was playing water polo. When he wasn’t playing water polo, he was messing around on the springboards with friends. As the years went by, he gravitated toward competitive diving. COACHING BY DAY Parrington’s first coaching experience came early on from teaching himself and his teammates. The diving coaches at the club were not full-time professionals. They all kept busy with their day jobs, stopping by the pool during their lunch breaks and returning to the deck at the end of the workday. When coaches weren’t overseeing the training, the team naturally took matters into their own hands by trying to improve each

other’s techniques. “During the school vacations and holidays -- myself, my teammates and buddies -- we would dive a lot during the mornings waiting for them to come to the pool,” Parrington said. “We’d just be messing around on the boards and coaching each other. We did a lot of that. I certainly learned a lot doing that without realizing it at the time.” Parrington’s early career did not end with just coaching his teammates. By the time he was 14, he found himself coaching the even younger divers and really enjoyed the work. Looking back, he was hardly surprised he took up coaching. “I grew up around coaches,” Parrington said. “Even though my parents weren’t diving coaches, I was around coaching and teaching and that type of thing all my life.” THE COLLEGE PATH College in the United States was never really a career aspiration for Parrington, but recruiting letters started coming in after he finished three and a half years in military service. At the age of 23, Parrington enrolled as a freshman at the University of Houston. While diving for the Cougars, he also represented the brand-new country of Zimbabwe in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. In the same way he trained younger students back home in Africa, he often found himself coaching junior divers at the local club toward the end of his college career. “When the coach was on the road and needed someone to cover for the age-group divers, I would always be the one to cover and I got more and more into it,” Parrington said. “By the time I was a senior, I was coaching some summer-league diving and just knew that’s what I wanted to do. “So I did whatever it took to find a way.” The doors in college coaching started opening as Parrington was wrapping up his degree. After spending a year as a student assistant, his coach at Houston retired and Parrington assumed the full-time job. Seven years later in 1990, Parrington was named the diving coach at Tennessee. “It was a great opportunity to coach men and women in a great conference with a great program, so I came,” Parrington said. FULL CIRCLE In Parrington’s early years at Tennessee, it was a diver from Zimbabwe oddly enough who helped land the diving program back on the national map. Evan Stewart, a native of Harare, Zimbabwe, became an instant star on the collegiate level when he arrived as a freshman for the 1993-94 season. He won the NCAA Championships in the 3-meter event his first year and won again as a sophomore. “That was my first one as a coach, and that was a huge moment professionally in my career,” said Parrington, who was teammates with Stewart’s father back in Zimbabwe. “It was a very exciting moment, and later that summer he won the World Championships. “That particular year was a big year and kind of a break-out year in terms of the success we’ve had since then.” Between men’s and women’s competition, Parrington’s divers have won six NCAA diving championships and nine USA Diving national titles, including a 1-meter trophy won in 2010 by Michael Wright, who is diving again this week at Winter Nationals. With four divers competing this week at the USA Diving Winter National Championships, Parrington will do his best to help guide them to their next career goal: a berth in the Olympic Trials. A top 12 finish in the 3-meter or platform competitions would secure a position in next summer’s competition as the Tennessee divers work to represent the United States. Parrington’s new homeland.

Tori Lamp doesn’t let adversity get in her way diving By: John Shearer Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — At nearly 5 feet, 9 inches tall, Tennessee’s Tori Lamp is taller than the typical female diver. But she tries not to let that get in her way. “I don’t like to use it as an excuse, because if you use proper technique, it won’t matter how tall you are,” said the former state high school champion from Bearden. Saturday afternoon during the 10-meter platform quarterfinals of the USA Diving Winter National Championships at UT’s Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, she didn’t let a little adversity get in her way, either. Despite a faulty third dive in front of former Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis and the other judges, she bounced back in her last two dives to finish sixth with 312.45 points and advance to this morning’s semifinals. “My inward (3½) went badly, but everything else was pretty solid,” said the redshirt sophomore, who was sidelined last year by a shoulder injury. “I was extremely happy with my back 2½ (on her fourth dive).” The main objective in the quarterfinals is advancement rather than perfection, so UT diving coach Dave Parrington was pleased overall with her results. “I was very happy with the fact that was step 2 and now we move to step 3,” he said. “She was not quite as sharp as she was a couple of days ago (in the preliminaries). But I’m very pleased. I feel good about the next step.” Finishing first in the quarterfinals with 367.10 points was 2008 Olympian Haley Ishimatsu, followed by former Chinese standout Chen Ni (349.20), who became an American citizen earlier this year. Reigning champion Brittany Viola — the daughter of former major league baseball pitcher Frank Viola — finished fourth (332). Lamp actually came in second in the platform in the Winter Nationals two years ago in somewhat of a surprise, so she is feeling as much at home in the prestigious event as she does in the pool in which it is being staged. “I’m really excited and I’ve been working hard for this,” she said. “I just want to make the top six tomorrow and make the Olympic Trials and get back on the national team.” In the first final of the six-day meet, former Olympian Troy Dumais of Austin, Texas, teamed with Kristian Ipsen of Stanford to win the men’s 3-meter synchronized easily Saturday night.

Mauricio Robles 1st, Tori Lamp 2nd in diving events By: John Shearer Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — Tennessee’s Tori Lamp admits that diving, particularly platform diving, can be a little scary. “That’s the thrill of it,” the Bearden High graduate said with a laugh. “If it was easy, that wouldn’t make it exciting.” Friday night, she found herself battling adversity as well as heights in the 10-meter platform at the Tennessee Invitational swimming and diving meet at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center. After struggling on her first two dives, she rebounded to finish second with 293.85 points. “Thankfully I was able to come back and hit my last three dives, and that moved me up,” she said. While she inspired, Mauricio Robles of the Tennessee men impressed with 404 points to finish first in the men’s platform. The freshman from Mexico wowed the fans with an outstanding back three-and-a-half dive. “That’s the best one I’ve seen for sure,” said UT diving coach Dave Parrington. “That’s the most exciting moment of the day.” As the three-day meet concluded Friday, Robles helped the Tennessee men (822.5 points) finish third overall behind Louisville (1,058) and LSU (931), while the Lady Vols (691) finished second behind an outstanding Texas A&M (1,173.5) in the seven-team field. Tennessee women’s coach Matt Kredich was pleased overall. “I think that we made a lot of progress,” he said. “A meet that involves this many swimmers is always very revealing.” For him, the most uplifting performance overall came from school-record holder Samara Gelb, who battled back from a brain disorder diagnosis last season to compete in the long-course 200 breaststroke preliminaries Friday. “This morning she qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.25) and she is swimming better than she ever has,” he said. In the short course finals, she finished seventh (2:17.03). Another good performance was turned in Friday by Lindsay Gendron, who finished fourth in both the 100 free (50.44) and the 1,650 (16:20.85). For the Tennessee men, Ben Scheffer was second in the 200 backstroke (1:46.81), while Sam Petersen and Carl Jones finished third (15:22.23) and fourth (15:34.61), respectively, in the 1,650 free. Also, Ryan Helms was fourth in the platform (312.3), Clint Johnson was fourth in the 100 free (44.99), and Anders Storvik was fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:47.36). “Overall it was a good team performance,” said Tennessee men’s coach John Trembley. “You have to pick your fights in swimming. When teams shave and taper, they perform extremely well. We as a team chose not to here at the invitational.”

Ryan Helms places second in 3-meter diving, Kelsey Floyd swims the IM By: John Shearer Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — Tennessee men’s diver Ryan Helms has had to battle a few minor aches and injuries this season that come with the sport. Mentally, however, the senior from Moultrie, Ga., feels great and hopes to conclude his Vol career in positive form. “There’s been a few setbacks with some injuries, but other than that, I am really pleased with how my senior year is going,” he said. “My main goal is to focus around how I’ve done in the past, and I hope to beat my personal best every time I dive.” Wednesday night during the first day of the Tennessee Invitational swimming and diving meet at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, Helms finished second in the 3-meter springboard. His 391.70 points over six dives put him just behind Grant Nel of Texas A&M (411.55) and slightly ahead of Vol teammate and freshman Mauricio Robles (389.50). “I was really pleased with my performance,” said Helms. “I had a couple of misses, which I can work on. But for the most part I was really pleased.” Helms’ finish helped put the Tennessee men (204.5 points) in second place behind Louisville (241) among the seven teams competing. Among the Tennessee women, junior Kelsey Floyd is competing in an event she has not done since she was 13— the individual medley. But she is improving as rapidly, as her fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley Wednesday in 2 minutes, 1.98 seconds was her career best and 14th fastest in Lady Vols history. She admits to having fun with the event. “I enjoy it so much right now because I keep getting faster and faster,” the Lexington, Ky., resident said. “I feel like I am starting to really get comfortable with it.” She helped put the Lady Vols in second with 208 points, behind leader Texas A&M (358). Other top individual finishers for the Lady Vols on Wednesday were Lindsay Gendron, fourth in the 500 free (4:46.68); Tori Lamp, fourth in 1-meter diving (289.65 points); and Caroline Simmons, sixth in the 50 free (23.63). For the Tennessee men, senior Carl Jones celebrated his 23rd birthday with a fourth in the men’s 500 free (4:31.34) for his fastest time of the season. Tristian Slater was third in the 200 IM (1:49.83), while Ed Walsh finished seventh in the 50 free (20.66). The Tennessee men also finished second in the 200 free and 400 medley relays.

Kelsey Floyd adds personal touch to victories By: Clay Seal Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — For Kelsey Floyd, Saturday was a home meet in more than one way. Floyd, the Tennessee junior swimmer from Lexington, Ky., native, helped UT win its regular-season, home-opening double dual meet against Kentucky and Indiana, winning three events at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. “My family has season tickets to basketball and football, so that’s the college I grew up loving,” Floyd said. “Coming here was kind of a big change. I’ve never seen this much orange.” With wins in 11 of 16 events, Tennessee (3-0, 1-0 SEC) beat Indiana 174-126, and Kentucky 227-73. Indiana beat Kentucky (0-2, 0-1) 218-82. Indiana (1-1) won the other five events. Floyd still roots for some Kentucky sports, but in the pool, ties are severed. “Now I kind of have a little personal competition with my hometown,” Floyd said, “which is weird, but I like it.” Floyd, who picked up seven All-America honors last season, won the 100-meter butterfly (54.89 seconds), 200 butterfly (1:58.68) and was part of 200 medley relay (1:40.81). She placed second in the 500 freestyle with a career-best 4:50.96. Lady Vols coach Matt Kredich said his team had some “kinks” in the first half of the meet, but finished well to open the home schedule. “When the fans are here and there’s the ceremony and tradition that we have here at this pool now, it definitely sets in that the next phase of the season is here,” said Kredich. “There’s training, and we’ve competed a little bit, once on the road and once in a scrimmage, but there’s nothing like the real thing at home. For us, it’s really good to put a positive spin on that beginning.” Jenny Connolly won the 100 backstroke after convincing Kredich to let her swim Saturday while battling a stomach virus. After missing the beginning of last season recovering from surgery, the senior wanted to make sure she was able to compete in her last home opener. “That was really, really hard to do, to watch my team swim without me,” Connolly said. “I did not want to go through that again.” “She just demanded to swim,” Kredich said. Sophomore Lindsay Gendron placed first in the 200 individual medley, 1000 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay, and finished second in the 200 freestyle. Gabrielle Trudeau won the 1-meter dive with a score of 294.10. In the 3-meter event Jodie McGroarty (306.90), Trudeau (298.6) and Tori Lamp (296.3) took the No. 2 through 4 spots in the 3-meter event. Indiana’s Laura Ryan won with a score of 370.65. The Lady Vols don’t compete again until they host the Tennessee Invitational Nov. 16-18.

Jenny Connolly looks for big senior season after big summer at World University Games By: Mike Strange Knoxville News Sentinel KNOXVILLE — Jenny Connolly’s World University Games experience ran the gamut. From crushing disappointment: She originally fell short of qualifying for the U.S. team. “I came so close. One other girl beat me.’’ To an unexpected second chance: In April she got a text from Tennessee coach Matt Kredich, informing her she’d been added to the team for the trip to China in August. “I started screaming. I said, this better not be a joke.’’ To the ultimate, a gold medal in the50-meter backstroke: “I honestly thought I got second. When you watch the video I’m behind the whole race and it came down to the touch.’’ So now, Connolly, the gold-medal kid, is back to being Connolly, the senior All-American as the Lady Vols launch their season in Wilmington, N.C. UT swims two meets in Wilmington, one today and the other Saturday. Connolly took a week off after her return from China but couldn’t wait to get back in the pool with her UT teammates. “By about the third day you start to get a little antsy,’’ she said. The Games, which featured many of the 2012 Olympic hopefuls, are in the rearview mirror but they were life-changing. China was only her second international experience. She won two silvers, in the 100 back and 400 medley relay, to go with her gold in the 50 back. The timing was crucial with Olympic Trials and then the Summer Games in London looming after Connolly’s final collegiate season. Kredich said Connolly took aerobic training more seriously than in the past and saw the result. “She had to have this summer,’’ he said, “both for the confidence and just to understand what it takes to be at that level.’’ Said Connolly, “I learned a lot about myself as a swimmer.’’ Such as? “That I can pretty much do anything I set my mind to.’’ Kredich, in his seventh season coaching the Lady Vols, has trained All-Americans and even Olympic medalists. He said there is a special something in Connolly’s mind. “She’s like no other swimmer I’ve ever coached,’’ he said. “She has this switch. When she flips it on, she is unbelievable. She ascends to another level.’’ She flipped it on at the SEC meet last February, claiming gold in the 100 back, the 100 fly and the lead leg of the winning 400 medley relay. She flipped it on again in China to close ground and win the gold by one one-hundredth of a second.

“He (Kredich) makes fun of the switch,’’ Connolly said, “like at practice, he’ll say, ‘turn the switch on.’ It’s just my little term for the highest point of motivation I have. “At practice it’s a conscious decision. At meets, it’s completely natural. It just happens.’’ As her senior season plays out, there is potential to fashion herself as an Olympic candidate in the 100 back or, possibly, the 100 fly. “And her freestyle continues to progress,’’ Kredich said. “I wouldn’t put anything beyond her.’’ Early Start: The Lady Vols normally don’t open until mid-October, but Kredich moved up the schedule this year and is pleased with the result. “Having the carrot of competition come up a little earlier in the season, it’s been good for motivation,’’ he said. “It tends to get hard right about now to keep training.’’

Connolly’s Dedication Pays Off By: Todd Mounce UTLadyVols.com KNOXVILLE — One week. That’s the amount of time Tennessee Lady Vol senior swimmer Jenny Connolly gave herself to recoup and refocus for the upcoming summer season that awaited her. Those seven days, 168 hours or 10,080 minutes were the only break from training Connolly had until she won gold on Thursday in the 50m backstroke as a member of Team USA at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China. When the Tennessee swimming season ended on March 19 in Austin, Texas, Connolly did not yet know what she would accomplish in the coming months. As it wasn’t until April that it was announced that she had been named to Team USA for the WUG, which features some of the world’s best athletes. Along with the help and guidance of Lady Vol head swimming coach Matt Kredich, the two devised a plan that would allow Connolly to peak at the World University Games in an effort to accomplish her goals of breaking an American record and winning all of her events in China. In order for those goals to become a reality, Connolly knew she had to increase her workload and embrace aerobic training. “I trained a lot harder than I ever had before and was on the right track the whole time,” Connolly said. “In the summer we would time the 100 or time the 50 and be right on track and where we needed to be. It was not magic, but hard work and putting trust into the training I was doing.” Despite coming off a junior campaign that saw the WestLafayette, Ind., native capture four more First Team All-America accolades at NCAAs, win three gold medals at the Southeastern Conference Championships and break a Lady Vol record, Kredich and Connolly both knew things could have gone better. “Jenny has had a great career here so far and a number of really impressive seasons, but none of them have ended the way that we havewanted,” Kredich said. “She doesn’t necessarily love all elements of training but did a better job this year than she ever has with the part of training she doesn’t like, which is essentially aerobic training and she in fact embraced it.” By accepting and excelling through training Connolly wound up with a gold and silver medal at the World University games, along with setting a new WUG record in the 50 back twice. Two weeks prior, she placed third in the 100 back and swam the fastest lead leg split time in the 4x100medley relay to help Tennessee Aquatics place runner-up at the 2011 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships. For some that might be enough, but for Connolly it wasn’t. “Matt and I have been talking about the meet (World University Games) for a long time, the whole summer actually,” Connolly recalled. “My goals for the meet were to get the American record in the 50 and to win all of my races. Obviously goals need to change, sometimes, and failure is necessary for improvement.” Though not an American record, Connolly’s time of 27.92 is just a mere .12 seconds behind the national mark of 27.80 seconds and she did swim the fastest time by an American this year, as well as the third fastest in the world. For her performances, Connolly did admit that her hard work and dedication had paid off. “I had no idea I would get a Games record in the 50 (27.92), that wasn’t even on my mind because I was solely focused on getting that American record that I wanted. I am still really pleased with my races. I am really, really happy with how I performed and having the races end up how they did.” With classes back in session and the 2011-12 season right around the corner in October, Connolly has one more year to enhance the legacy she has already left donning the Orange and White swim cap. “I’ve thought about my senior year a little bit and the only thing that comes to my mind is how sad I am going to be when I am done,” Connolly explained. “I have had such a good time at Tennessee and it really has made me a better swimmer and a better person. I am really happy that I still have another year left with this team.”

Though summer is over, the past three months will be something that both Connolly and Kredich won’t soon forget. “Though she didn’t accomplish all of her goals, she was very close and I am impressed with that because she showed a lot of courage in setting those goals,” Kredich said. “It should show her how powerful her mind is when she is determined to do something.” The 2011-12 swimming and diving season starts Sept. 30, as the squad travels to UNC Wilmington. After another short break when she returns to the U.S., Connolly will focus on her final season, sitting down with Kredich to formulate a new set of goals as she prepares to cap her Lady Vol career. “I really enjoyed my time here in China,” Connolly said. “I’m ready to go back to America. I’m ready to go back to Knoxville. I really miss Tennessee. It was a different atmosphere and something I really never experienced before, so it was something new and has been a really good time.”
