NOTEWORTHY NOTES 2-0 AGAINST TEXAS A&M

UT is 2-0 all-time against Texas A&M with wins over the Aggies in both 2011 and 2012. Friday’s match also marks the second time the teams will play in Knoxville. ¢ Oct. 19, 2012 in College Station, Texas Tennessee 1, No. 9 Texas A&M 0: Hannah Wilkinson scored exactly 10 minutes into the game from the right side of the box after CC Cobb’s pass from the midfield circle. Julie Eckel registered a career-high 11 saves as the UT back line held off a barrage of 23 Aggie shots. ¢ Aug. 28, 2011 in Knoxville, Tenn. Tennessee 1, No. 18 Texas A&M 0: Caroline Brown scored on a penalty kick in the 35th minute. Alexis Owens drew the penalty call at 34:16 when A&M keeper Jordan Day was called for tripping inside the box. Julie Eckel recorded five saves to earn the first shutout of her Tennessee career.

¢ The Aggies are coming off a pair of wins last weekend. The team took a 3-1 win over UMass on Sept. 13 and a 4-0 win over Cal Poly on Sept. 15. Shea Groom had a hat trick in the win over UMass and scored again against Cal Poly. Kelley Monogue scored two goals and registered an assist in the win over the Mustangs. ¢ Texas A&M ranks second in the SEC with 22.12 shots 10.25 shots on goal per match. ¢ The Aggies have only allowed one goal in the first half all season - in the 33rd minute of last Friday’s win over UMass. The team has done much of its scoring after halftime as 13 of its 18 goals came in the second half. ¢ Texas A&M went 19-5-1 in 2012, its debut season in the SEC. The team finished second in the SEC and won the SEC West with a 10-2-1 league record. Caroline Brown has scored eight of her 21 career goals and tallied eight of her 17 career assists in SEC regular-season play, Julie Eckel is 16-7-1 all-time in SEC play with 101 saves and a 0.88 GAA.

Tennessee is looking to bounce back from a rough week that featured a 1-0 loss on the road to Middle Tennessee State and a scoreless tie at home against Western Kentucky.

SIRNA’S STREAK OF GOING WIRE TO WIRE

Allie Sirna played the full 110 minutes in Sunday’s tie against Western Kentucky. Sirna is the only UT player to play the full 740 minutes of the 2013 season to date. She has played complete matches in 19 consecutive matches, dating back to last season. The last time she did not play the full match was on Sept. 23, 2012, when she played 66 minutes in UT’s 6-0 rout at Mississippi State.

SOPHOMORES STEPPING UP

Tennessee sophomores Susan Ferguson, Gabby Santorio and Suzanne Capocaccia have been big contributors this season. Ferguson has played in all eight matches as an attacking midfielder with six starts, 462 minutes played, 10 shots and seven shots on goal. Santorio has made six starts on the back line, playing 468 minutes and registering two assists and one shot. Suzanne Capoaccaccia has played in all eight matches with one start, 287 minutes and two shots.

ALWAYS BOUNCING BACK

Entering today’s match, Tennessee has a string of 47 consecutive regular-season contests without backto-back losses. UT has not had back-to-back losses in the regular season since 2010. The last back-to-back losses occurred when the team followed a 4-2 loss at Florida on Oct. 15, 2010 with a 2-1 loss at South Carolina on Oct. 17, 2010.

Tennessee saw a 331:36 defensive shutout streak come to an end when MTSU scored in the third minute on Sept. 13. The streak spanned five matches from Aug. 30 to Sept. 13.

FOUR SCORE AND FOUR MATCHES IN A ROW

Junior Hannah Wilkinson also saw her streak of consecutive matches with a goal come to an end on Friday. She scored in four consecutive matches from Aug. 30-Sept 8 vs. UCF, James Madison, Dayton and Mercer. In 2012, Wilkinson scored her eight goals in two four-game stretches.

GOAL & ASSIST IN SAME GAME

Hannah Wilkinson tallied a goal and an assist on both the win over Dayton (9/6) and in the win over Mercer (9/8). She is the only UT player to record a goal and an assist in the same game this season. In 2012, that happened just three times. Caroline Brown had one goal and two assists vs. Samford (8/17/12). Katie Lenz had one goal and two assists at Mississippi State (9/23/12) and Alexis Owens had one goal and one assist against Georgia (10/25/12).

ECKEL MOVES UP IN RECORD BOOKS

Julie Eckel became the fourth UT goalkeeper to reach the 30-win mark with the 3-1 win vs. Oklahoma on Aug. 23. UT’s 2-1 win at No. 17 UCF on Aug. 30 tied her with Jaimel Johnson (2005-08) for third place on UT’s all-time list. The win over James Madison on Sept. 1 put Eckel in sole possession of third place. Eckel’s 20th career shutout came on Sept. 8 against Mercer, tying her for second-all-time with Johnson. With six saves against Dayton on Sept. 6, Eckel leaped past Sarah Shivley (195 saves, 1996-99) into fourth place on the all-time list. Eckel now has 213 career saves and is 14 back of Vanessa Phillips-Bossart (227, 2002-05) in third place. The scoreless tie with Western Kentucky (9/15) marked Eckel’s 21st career save, giving her sole possession of second place on UT’s all-time list. BROWN’S STANDING IN RECORD BOOKS

With a goal 23 seconds before halftime vs. OU, Brown recorded the 12th match-winner of her career, moving her into sole possession of second-place on UT’s all-time list. She currently has 13 and trails only Kylee Rossi (15, 2005-08). That goal was also Brown’s 20th career score, making her the 14th Tennessee player to reach that mark. The last Volunteer to score 20 goals in a career was Emily Dowd (22, 2008-11). Brown now has 21 career scores and needs three more to crack the top 10. Tennessee improved to 3-0 all-time against Oklahoma with a 3-1 win over the Sooners in the season opener on Aug. 23. Caroline Brown, who had two goals in a 3-1 win at OU in 2011, scored the match-winner in UT’s 2013 season opener, giving her three career goals and two career winners against the Sooners.

THE SCHEDULE

The 2012 season was Tennessee’s first under the direction of head coach Brian Pensky. UT went 14-5-3 and finished third in the SEC with a 9-3-1 conference record, far exceeding preseason expectations after league coaches picked the team to finish 11th. The team made its 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, falling in the First Round to Miami (Ohio). UT finished at No. 18 in the final NCAA Women’s Soccer RPI and the Lady Vols ranked 25th in the final Soccer America poll of 2012.

Tennessee boasted one of the nation’s elite defenses in 2012. The team’s 0.69 goals-against average set a new program record and the Lady Vols recorded 11 shutouts. UT also produced the longest shutout streak in school history with 533:22 of scoreless defense from Aug. 19 through Sept. 9. Sophomore forward Hannah Wilkinson was named an NSCAA Third Team All-American, an NSCAA First Team All-South Region pick and a First Team All-SEC selection in her debut season with the Orange and White. Senior back Ali Hall was a key anchor on that recordsetting defense and earned NSCAA Second Team All-South Region honors and Second Team All-SEC accolades. Tennessee also thrived in the classroom as junior Caroline Brown was tabbed to the NSCAA Scholar All-South Region second team. Senior Alexis Owens and juniors Tori Bailey and Caroline Capocaccia were named honorable mentions. Brown and Caroline Capocaccia were named Co-Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year at the 2013 Volscars. NON-CONFERENCE PLAY Tennessee enjoyed a hot start to the 2012 season, going 5-1-2 in eight non-conference games. In those first eight contests, UT outscored its opponents by a combined score of 13-2. The team took a 4-0 win over Samford in the season opener on Aug. 17, marking its sixth consecutive seasonopening victory. Tennessee followed that with a 4-1 win at Western Kentucky. Amy Harrison had back-toback two-goal games to start the year and garnered numerous national awards. UT improved to 4-0 with a pair of wins in the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic. Brown had a clutch matchwinning PK to lift the team to a 1-0 2OT win over William & Mary. Two days later the team beat VCU, 2-0. After a 2-0 win at Kennesaw State on Aug. 31, the team headed to the West Coast for matches at Cal State Northridge and No. 1 UCLA. Wilkinson made her UT debut in a 0-0 2OT tie at Northridge. UCLA scored a scored a second half goal to end Tennessee’s program record shutout streak of 533:22 and lift the Bruins to a 1-0 win. SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE PLAY Tennesee went 9-3-1 in SEC play and was in the hunt for the conference regular season title through the final week of the regular season. Wilkinson scored all eight of her goals in SEC play. Those 13 games featured three overtime contests, starting with a 2-1 OT win over Alabama at home. That game featured Wilkinson’s first collegiate goal and an overtime winner by Kylie Bono.

After a 1-1 home tie against Vanderbilt and a 2-1 loss at Florida, Tennessee had its best offensive game of the season with a 6-0 victory at Mississippi State. Arkansas scored early in a match in Knoxville on Sept. 28 to take a 1-0 upset. UT followed that with three straight 1-0 wins. Bailey had a clutch goal from six yards out in the 58th minute to lift UT past No. 11 Missouri. A 58th minute goal by Brown pushed Tennessee past South Carolina. Bono netted a 60th-min goal to give the team a victory at Auburn. Kentucky edged the Volunteers, 1-0, on Oct. 12, but Tennessee closed out the regular season with four straight wins. Wilkinson netted a 96th-minute winner in a 3-2 OT win over LSU two days later. Julie Eckel set a personal high with an 11-save effort in a 1-0 upset over No. 9 Texas A&M. Wilkinson had an 80th-minute winner against Ole Miss. On senior day, Alexis Owens scored an incredible 84th minute match-winner from three yards out to lift Tennessee past Georgia, 3-2. SEC TOURNAMENT No. 19 Tennessee and Auburn played 110 scoreless minutes, but the Tigers came out on top, winning on penalty kicks, 5-3. NCAA TOURNAMENT Tennessee’s soccer season came to a dramatic conclusion on Nov. 11 as Miami (Ohio) scored with nine seconds left in regulation then tallied the winner in OT for a 3-2 finale at Regal Soccer Stadium.
