The #3-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols will play host to the NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Union Lady Bulldogs (2-0) in a non-counting contest this evening. While this is UT’s second exhibition game, Union already has two regular season victories in the win column having defeated Hannibal-LaGrange, 79-62, on Nov. 1 and the University of St. Francis (Ill.), 82-45, on Saturday afternoon in Jackson, Tenn.

THE 4-1-1 ON UNION The Lady Bulldogs enter the 2011-12 campaign as the No. 2-ranked team in the NAIA. They finished last season as the NAIA national champion runnerup, just one win shy of completing a threepeat and winning their fifth title in seven years. Three-time All-American and preseason TranSouth AllConference selection Lavanda Ross is the only returning starter from last year’s 35-2 squad.

IN OUR LAST GAME VS. UNION The Tennessee Lady Vols cruised to an 86-53 exhibition victory over Union (Tenn.) on Nov. 7, 2010 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Union hung tough for much of the first half and drew to within 21-18 before the Big Orange closed the half on an 18-3 run to take a 39-21 lead into the locker room. Tennessee was keyed by the play of sophomore Glory Johnson, who led the orange with 20 points and 11 rebounds, both gamehighs. After being critical of her team’s defensive performance in the previous game against Carson-Newman, UT coach Pat Summitt spoke much more glowingly about the defensive effort, against Union but emphasized that the team still has improvements to make. Tennessee got a spark from the return of Vicki Baugh. A redshirtjunior forward, Baugh had not played since suffering a second torn ACL on Feb. 3, 2009.

She entered the game to a standing ovation from the 11,252 fans at Thompson-Boling Arena, something she said really meant a lot to her. Three other Lady Vols scored in double figures, led by Alicia Manning’s 13 points. Taber Spani and Shekinna Stricklen added 10. UT pulled down 49 boards (20 offensive) to Union’s game total of 23 and forced 19 turnovers. Union head coach Mark Campbell said he was proud of his team’s effort. Kayla Hudson led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-10 from way downtown.

STREAKING INTO 2011-12 The Lady Vols carry a 36-game homecourt winning streak into the game against Union.

Tonight’s contest does not count – win or lose -on the official record since it is just an exhibition.

SHEKINNA HAS IT GOING Lady Vol senior Shekinna Stricklen has the nation’s longest starting streak entering the 2011-12 season. Stricklen has started 104 consecutive games and is joined in the elite club by a pair of players on upcoming UT opponent rosters.

DePaul senior forward Keisha Hampton has started 102 consecutive games while Miami’s (Fla.) Shenise Johnson has been in the starting five for 99 consecutive games.

Miami travels to Knoxville for the State Farm TipOff on Tues., Nov. 15. UT and DePaul meet in Madison Square Garden on Dec. 11 in the Maggie Dixon Classic.

When Coach Pat Summitt started freshman Taber Spani against Baylor in the opening game of the 2009-10 season, it marked only the 13th time in her coaching career that a freshman started her very first game at Tennessee. TOUGHEST PLACE TO PLAY The University of Tennessee’s Thompson-Boling Arena is still the toughest women’s basketball arena in the nation to secure a win. Heading into the 2011-12 season, the Lady Vols have fashioned a 341-20 all-time record on “The Summitt” for a 94.45 winning percentage since the doors were opened in 1987.

STREAMING UPDATE Tennessee’s exhibition games versus both Carson-Newman and Union will be live streamed on utladyvols.com. At this time, 27 Lady Vol games are set for television in 2011-12. Only two games are not slated to be aired — at UCLA and Chattanooga in Knoxville.

POLLSTERS The Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team will start the 2011-12 season ranked No. 3 in both The Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN polls. The AP preseason rankings were released on Oct. 29, while the coaches’ ranking were released on Nov. 1.

In the AP poll, the Lady Vols received 906 points to place behind No. 1 Baylor (988) 33 first place votes and No. 2 Notre Dame (934) six first place votes.

The Lady Vols return eight letterwinners, including senior All-American Shekinna Stricklen, from the 2010-11 squad which went 34-3 and captured both the SEC regular season and tournament championships for back-toback titles matching 2009-10’s success in the SEC. Last season, UT earned a No. 1 seed in the 2011 NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Elite 8 before losing to Notre Dame. “We are aiming high and have great expectations for this season,” Lady Vol head coach Pat Summitt said.

“Starting out at number three in the AP poll is a good beginning,” she continued. “We will quickly see how far we have to go to be able to cut down nets. Seven of our first 10 games will be against ranked opponents – all before Christmas.”

Coach Summitt was referring to the stretch of games against No. 7 Miami (Nov.15), No.1 Baylor (Nov. 27), No. 24 Texas (Dec. 4), vs. No. 19 DePaul (Dec. 11), at No. 16 Rutgers (Dec. 13), at No. 22 UCLA (Dec. 17) and at No. 5 Stanford (Dec. 20). The Baylor Lady Bears are ranked at the top for the first time in the preseason women’s basketball poll by the AP. They started last year at No. 2 before ascending to No. 1 in early January for the first time in school history. The Lady Bears finished with a No. 3 ranking and will visit Knoxville on Sun., Nov. 27 in a game to be televised by ESPN. Baylor received 33 of 40 first-place votes from a national media panel. The Lady Bears became the first Big 12 school to be ranked No. 1 to start the season since Texas in 1985 and 1986. Notre Dame drew six first-place votes and was second, with Tennessee, Connecticut and Stanford rounding out the first five. The No. 2 ranking is the Irish’s best since the final poll of 2001 when they also were ranked second. The Lady Vols travel to South Bend, Ind., on Mon., Jan. 23.

Miami, which was picked to win the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time, was seventh. It’s the best ranking for the Hurricanes since they finished the 1992 poll at No. 6. Tennessee and Miami meet for the first time ever in the State Farm Tipoff on Nov. 15 in Knoxville.

Tennessee is scheduled to face 11 teams (in 13 games) ranked in the preseason poll this season.

STRICKLEN SELECTED AS AN AP A-A Lady Vol senior guard Shekinna Stricklen was selected as a First Team Associated Press Preseason All-American. Also joining Stricklen on the five player team were Baylor’s Brittney Griner, Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins, Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike and Miami's Shenise Johnson. Tennessee and Stricklen will face each of those teams this season.

Coach Pat Summitt on Stricklen: “I think her leadership across the board has been very solid," Summitt said. "Our team is looking to her, and I think she's responded in a way that really helps the other players. She's a calming effect, which I like. I think that's why they really listen to what she has to say all the time and they constantly go to her."

JOHNSON NAMED AS A LOWE’S NOMINEE Tennessee senior forward Glory Johnson has been named one of 30 women's basketball nominees for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, presented to student-athletes who excel on and off the field. Johnson is one of three nominees from the SEC. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence community, classroom, character and competition. The CLASS award is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School and focuses on the total student-athlete. The program encourages students to use their visibility through athletics to make a positive impact.

"Glory is an ideal candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award," Head Coach Pat Summitt said, "blending the perfect balance of excellence in the classroom, on the court and in the community. She is our first player ever to graduate in three years and that shows her dedication and discipline toward her academics."

Johnson captured All-SEC First Team honors in 2010-11 and was a finalist for the 2011 State Farm All-America Team. The 6'3" Knoxville native led the Lady Vols in rebounding in 2010-11 with 9.7 boards per game and added 12.0 points per outing. A Master of Science in Communication candidate, Johnson completed her undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Programs with a Concentration in Global Studies and a Specialization in Global Politics and Economy in only three years. She has been a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll in each of her first three years at UT and has been a VolScholar since 2009.

The list of nominees will be trimmed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, whereupon one finalist will be chosen based on voting by the media, coaches and fans.

LADY VOLS PICKED #1 BY SEC MEDIA Tennessee was predicted to win the 2012 Southeastern Conference women's basketball championship in a voting of a select panel of both SEC and national media members.

Tennessee tops the order of finish with 264 points, with Georgia (228), Kentucky (212), LSU (189), Vanderbilt (172) and Florida (151) rounding out the top half of the league. Arkansas (142), South Carolina (107), Auburn (94), Alabama (55), Mississippi State (54) and Ole Miss (48) round out the bottom half.

Tennessee's Shekinna Stricklen was the overwhelming choice of the media for SEC Women's Basketball Player of the Year with 16 votes, the remaining votes were for Georgia's Jasmine James, LSU's LaSondra Barrett and Tennessee's Glory Johnson. Stricklen, a 2011 State Farm All-American and SEC MVP averaged 12.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season.

UT sophomore Meighan Simmons, the 2011 SEC Rookie of the Year, was selected to the second team. Simmons is the Lady Vols returning scorer at 13.5 ppg.

Joining Stricklen on the All-SEC First Team are Georgia's Jasmine James, Kentucky's A'dia Mathies, LSU's LaSondra Barrett and Tennessee's Glory Johnson. Second Team includes Arkansas' C'eria Ricketts, Ole Miss'

Valencia McFarland, Simmons, and Vanderbilt's Stephanie Holzer.

Points were compiled on a 12-11-10-9-8-7-6-54-3-2-1 basis. Each media member also voted for one team as an overall conference champion and a five-player All-SEC Team.
