UNCG Spartan Club 2011-12 Annual Report

Page 1

Message from the Chancellor UNCG is a university community that attracts people who want to go beyond the expected. The contributions of our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends don’t just involve doing something more; they’re about doing something more meaningful. Being a part of the UNCG community means answering the call to Do something bigger altogether. As we move forward, our university continues to adapt to a changing environment and redefines what it means to be a public university, just like we have since the first day we opened our doors; today is no different. In times of challenge, we are neither complacent nor apprehensive. We take bold risks to expand access and provide a transformative experience for our students. It’s in our DNA. It’s what makes us UNCG. For more than 200 of our students at UNCG, intercollegiate athletics plays a central role in that essential transformation of turning potential into accomplishment. Their experiences on the fields of play develop the necessary skills for them to make the most of their opportunities and overcome life’s obstacles with honor and grace. We are all inspired by the achievements of our coaches and student-athletes, and we are extremely grateful to everyone who supported their endeavors in 2011-12. As our hopes and dreams grow for our student-athletes and the entire UNCG community, we hope your generosity will continue to grow as well. Thank you so much for your dedication and ongoing support.

Linda P. Brady

Message from the Athletic Director I want to begin by saying how proud I am to be a Spartan! We are coming off a year that affirms to me that we are moving toward our envisioned future of building a nationally recognized mid-major program. We have made these strides with outstanding student-athletes, dedicated coaches and a committed support staff. In the following pages, you will see that we are truly building champions for life on the field, in the classroom and in our community. We must continue to provide the resources for our student-athletes to achieve at the highest academic and athletic level. This will ensure that we continue to recruit the most qualified students who will continue the Spartan legacy. Your belief in our envisioned future, our student-athletes and our coaches and your ongoing loyal support allows us to continue to Do something bigger altogether. Thank you for your commitment to our student-athletes and to our future. Go Spartans!

Raising The Bar $3,000,000

Due to the state’s budget issues bringing an end to the out-of-state tuition waiver in 2011, combined with escalating tuition and fees, our scholarship expenses have risen dramatically (67% since 2010) and placed tremendous strain on the athletic department budget.

Spartan Club Athletic Scholarship Funding Athletic Endowment Spin-Off

TOTAL SCHOLARSHIP EXPENSE

Student Fees $2,500,000

While support of our Spartan Club Athletic Scholarship Fund has increased 40% since 2010, it only meets a small portion of the overall scholarship need. As a result, we rely very heavily on student fees to fund our scholarship costs.

$2,000,000

In addition, while we will spend $3,054,951 on scholarships in 2013, it would take an additional $687,000 to fully fund all the scholarships allowable by the NCAA for each of our 17 varsity teams.

83%

We must raise the bar and grow our Athletic Scholarship Fund. This will reduce the need to use the majority of student fees allocated to athletics for scholarships, providing us greater flexibility to provide our studentathletes with the resources necessary to compete at the highest levels.

Masterful Spartans In pursuit of academic and athletic excellence, today’s student-athletes face rigorous and demanding schedules with year-round activities that require intense focus and dedication. All of UNCG’s student-athletes excel at high levels, but it is the rare few that fully commit themselves who can complete their undergraduate degrees before their athletic eligibility expires. This allows them to begin work on a Masters degree while they are still playing the sport they love. These individuals will have a definite advantage entering the work force. UNCG Athletics is fortunate to have four such student-athletes who truly embody The Spartan Way and are well on their way to becoming champions in life.

The goal is to assist them to achieve the highest possible quality of life. This is important to me because my uncle is autistic. Being around folks in this facility has made me aware that these people are “true,” with feelings and personalities just like everyone else. Just because someone is different doesn’t allow one to look down on them or on others in life. The impact on me is that I want to share my feeling with others regarding people with disabilities and how they can be contributing members of the community.”

“I taught a 13-week course for non-English speaking students ages 30 to 60 who were preparing to take the U.S. Citizenship Test. The course consisted of four-parts, beginning English, reading, writing and American History. I chose to teach this course to prepare myself for my future career. After graduation, I plan to teach in California where English is not the first language for many young students. In returning to California, I am excited to be close to my family and continue the passionate tradition of the long line of teachers in my family from my great-grandmother, grandmother and mother.”

“Having the opportunity to play soccer at UNCG was life-changing for me. My goals after UNCG were to either play professionally or to coach. The life-lessons that I learned from my coaches at UNCG moved me to choose coaching so I could give children the same opportunities that were provided to me at the college level. Working at GUSA has offered me the platform to truly give back to a sport that gave me so much.”

“Wow…what a year for the Spartans! From a near National Champion, to multiple SoCon titles, to numerous allconference performances, to another stellar year in the classroom and in the community, our student-athletes and coaches once again represented UNCG with pride and distinction. To top it all off, we had a record breaking year in the Spartan Club, setting an all-time high for our Athletic Scholarship Fund of $307,479 (a 20.7% increase over last year). A sincere thank you to all whose generosity Craig Fink Assoc. AD/Advancement helped to make these achievements possible. As you can see from the chart below, we have had steady growth in our scholarship fund in recent years. However, if you reference page three, you’ll see that we still have a long way to go to fully meet the needs of our program. It is going to take a true team effort for us to continue to provide a first class environment for our student-athletes as they pursue excellence on the field and in the classroom. Partner with us once again by joining the Spartan Club today. Go Spartans!”
