ABC’s Martin Fry said, “If you’re an artist in your 50s, you have to be on fire.” Submitted photo

ABC recalls humbling Phoenix gig BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

Martin Fry and his band ABC have traveled the world, thanks to the ‘80s hits “Poison Arrow” and “Be Near Me.” Despite the hundreds of locales, Fry vividly remembers a 1982 gig in Phoenix. “We had a 14-piece band,” Fry said via telephone from England. “We had sparkly outfits. We were kind of ‘new romantics’ conquering America. “Then we had to open for a heavy metal band. We had a lot of success in Britain and it was our first date in the U.S. That brought us down to earth.” Since then, Fry said, the band has “obviously been through many adventures.” Among those, playing “When Smokey Sings,” “Poison Arrow” and “Look of Love” on U.S. stages. Playing in the United States has afforded ABC the chance to spread its wings. “There are a couple songs that we never play in the U.K. that we get to play in the U.S.A.,” he said. “‘Be Near Me’ was a big hit in the U.S.A., but not at home. So we get to dust that down and play. “We never play that song (in the United Kingdom), though. It’s like having two careers. The gigs in the U.S. have been fantastic. Many years have rolled on. We’re still energetic and the music means something in 2015. That’s why we’ve been putting dates down through September/ October time.” That includes “Lost ‘80s Live” with other stalwarts from that decade like Wang Chung, A Flock of Seagulls, Christopher Anton of Information Society and Boys Don’t Cry. It is set for Saturday,

Oct. 10, at Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino. “I’ve played a lot of multi kind of band gigs before and it’s a lot of fun,” Fry said. “There’s a tiny little competitive edge between the acts, which means everybody’s up for it. They want to maximize the applause in a way.” Besides playing gigs like “Lost ‘80s Live,” Fry has been writing new songs for a sequel to the album “Lexicon of Love,” which spawned the hits “Look of Love” and “Poison Arrow.” Orchestral music will be featured on the new collection. “The album is about what it’s like to be the age I’m at now and looking at love and all its manifestations,” he said. “I’m in my mid-50s, you have to be very inspired to make a record. I saw that New Order just put an album out. U2, too, of course. Those guys are my contemporaries. If you’re an artist in your 50s you have to be on fire. You gotta show up with a very strong selection of songs to justify making a record because it’s a young man’s game—young women’s game—like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.” Lost ‘80s Live begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino’s Ovations Live Showroom, 5040 W. Wild Horse Pass Blvd., Chandler. Tickets are $39 to $99. For more information, visit www.wingilariver.com. Christina Fuoco-Karasinski is the executive editor of the SanTan Sun News. ‘X-Men,’ ‘Twilight’ star returns to UltraStar Multi-tainment Center BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

Booboo Stewart doesn’t look any worse for the wear. With loose man bun and casual clothing, he looks more like a regular twentysomething than a movie star. The actor—best known for playing Seth Clearwater, a werewolf in “The Twilight Saga”—drove in from California to Maricopa’s UltraStar Multi-tainment Center Sept. 19 to meet with fans and showcase the latest “Descendants” movie. He has visited the entertainment center several times in the last few years, doing a favor for the facility’s management, who have become friends. It’s a twofold benefit. Stewart has used his appearances to promote movies on his resume, which includes his dream role of Warpath in “X-Men: Days of Future Path.” “I try and make a few stops,” Stewart said of the local visit. “I really enjoy the company and just the facility, they treat us really nice. It’s really a good time.” Stewart has been busy as of late. He recently wrapped the film “Pitching Tents,” which he called an ‘80s buddy film. “It’s about this guy who’s living in a small town and his group of friends,” he said. “It’s that whole story of deciding if you want to stay or leave for your dreams.” He admitted that he feels fortunate for the great opportunities that he has had. But he’s worked for it. “For example, for ‘The Last Survivors,’ I lost a lot of weight for it,” he said. “I weighed 111 pounds. I’m really proud of that (movie).”

To achieve that goal, he went to the gym every morning and worked out in a sweatsuit and in the steam room. For meals, he had three tiny pieces of chicken breast every two and a half hours. At 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., he arose to jump rope and have tiny sips of protein drinks. “It was serious,” he said with a wide smile. “When I took a break from filming, I cheated. I actually dropped from 118 to 111 because my metabolism sped up so fast because I hadn’t had any sugar.” The movie is slated to hit Netflix soon, he said. Stewart is proud of most of his work, however. He’s had the opportunity to switch between dancing, singing and acting—changes he enjoys. “To be an actor, to switch it up all the time, is a dream, I think,” he said. “I don’t know if I would have as much fun if I was playing the same role.” Like his theatrical counterparts, Stewart is very critical of himself, but it’s paid off. “Actors look at pictures of themselves and say, ‘I don’t like my hair,’” he said. “When your face is blown up huge, it’s terrible. Sometimes when you see something you don’t like, you’re like ‘Awww, it sucks.’ I judge myself pretty hard.” Christina Fuoco-Karasinski is the executive editor of the SanTan Sun News. She can be reached at christina@santansun. com.

Loverboy ready to bring hits to Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

Mike Reno of the Canadian rock band Loverboy is ready to play Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino’s Ovations Live showroom on Saturday, Oct. 17. He’s hoping his fans are prepared, too. “We bring a super high-energy blast from the past,” said Reno, whose band scored multiple Top 40 hits in the 1980s like “Hot Girls in Love,” “Lovin’ Every Minute of It” and “Working for the Weekend.” “We’re going to represent Loverboy material as it is on the records and bring you high-energy positive lyrics. We’re going to rock your socks off.” Reno explained that the band plays all 14 of its Top 40 hits. Loverboy tried to play songs from its most recent albums, but “nobody seemed to go for it.” So, it went with the tried and true method and made the right decision, he added. “We decided to hit them with all the stuff that we had in the ‘80s,” Reno said. “And it worked. When they respond and let us know that they love

it and they sing all the words almost louder than we are, it’s hard for us not to get energized.” After all these years, his favorite song to perform is “When It’s Over,” but “Hot Girls in Love” ranks up there as well. “That’s one of our big songs in our set that people go nuts for,” Reno said about “Hot Girls in Love.” It’s the fans’ loyalty that wins over Reno. “It does hit me in the heart strings,” he said. “They’re loyal. They stick with you. It’s wonderful to see them so into it. We meet so many people, have met so many friends and family and fans along the way. It’s a huge, wonderful ride.” Loverboy rarely performs “Almost Paradise,” a duet that Reno performed with Heart’s Ann Wilson from the movie “Footloose.” When the band does play it, it’s with Reno’s wife singing Wilson’s parts. “She sings great with me,” he said. Professionally produced by HDE Agency and presented by Bashas’, the eighth annual SanTan Brewing Oktoberfest will invade the streets of Downtown Chandler from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. This year, the festival is heading across the street to the east side of the Dr. A.J. Chandler Park where the City of Chandler installed a new permanent entertainment stage. Matisyahu is set to headline the SanTan Brewing Oktoberfest, featuring Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers performing live. Matisyahu first made a name for himself with his album “Live at Stubbs,” and “Youth” quickly followed. Both albums went gold and “Youth” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. In 2009, “Light” reached No. 1 on the Reggae Albums chart and stayed in the top spot for 34 weeks. Matisyahu’s fourth studio album, “Spark Seeker,” also debuted at No. 1 on the Reggae chart. Other highlights include a beer pong tournament, bag toss, the buddy carry, wiener dog races, keg stacking, tricycle races and a brat eating contest. There will be brats, pretzels, schnitzel and more. This year’s Oktoberfest will feature a variety of delicious treats from Brat Haus, Fabio on Fire, Montana Bar-B-Q, Fry Bread Inc., SanTan Brewing Company, Elmer’s Tacos and the San Francisco Chocolate Factory. No Oktoberfest celebration would be complete without beer. The SanTan Brewing Oktoberfest will feature a

Bavarian-style beer garden where patrons will enjoy SanTan’s Oktoberfest lager. Oktoberfest is a traditional German lager boasting a toasty strong malt profile with a clean and crisp lager flavor, ABV 5.5 percent. SanTan will also pour their core beers and other seasonal offerings. Look for the rare beer garden featuring many small batch and aged brews. to Reno, who moved from Vancouver to Palm Springs, California, with his wife each winter. He does have fond memories of playing in Chandler. “We played Chandler a few times,” he said. “I remember playing when they had their Ostrich Festival. We had a lot of fun. We’re absolutely very fond of the whole Phoenix area.” Reno said he was fascinated with the Ostrich Festival, as are most newcomers. “It was totally fun,” he said with a laugh. “I didn’t know people could ride ostriches. Have you ever seen the size of an ostrich egg? They’re amazing. I’m hoping to see some when I come out that way again.” Anywhere the band plays, however, the songs resonate with fans. “I think Loverboy has become part of people’s DNA,” he said. “They grew up with Loverboy and have positive memories of what Loverboy meant to them and their lives. We are a piece of their history. We preach high-energy, fun, rock ‘n’ roll and positive lyrics. There are no bummers, no downers. We really lay it on them and we’re starting

to get good at it after all these years.” Next year, Loverboy will record a new album, but the musicians are undecided about the format in which it’ll be released. “We’ve been working on some new songs,” he said. “We’re always putting out new albums, whether people buy them or not. “A few of the songs are in the bag, recorded and everything and mixed. We may just put it out as a gift on our website. Why not, right?” Loverboy performs at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino’s Ovations Live Showroom, 5040 Wild Horse Pass Blvd., Chandler. Tickets are $27 to $77.
