Tina Prioleau putting the finishing touches on her dress. Project Runway: Beaufort Style returns for its second “season” show. Art of Couture Madness will be Friday, September 24 at 7:30 PM at a new location, the USCB Performing Arts Center. Art of Couture class instructor Pat Wilcox has challenged her students to create the best fashion four categories: everyday, formal wear; costumes; and tailored suits. Unlike the hit American reality television series Project Runway where contestants are usually restricted by time, materials, and theme, Project Runway: Beaufort Style contestants are only restricted by their own creativity. Wilcox has expressed to her students, “have fun, create, let your mind’s eye run free, then capture your vision through sketches, fabric, and making your own patterns. ” The students select the category(s), purchase their own material and work independently under the guidance of Wilcox.

Teacher Wilcox, owner of Pat Wilcox Studio and Sewing Unlimited, has been a working artist for 20 years with costume experience with the movie industry. She has worked on movies and television including “CRITICAL CONDITION,” “ THE HANDMAIDS TALE,” and “ DAYS OF THUNDER.” She started the class “Art of Couture” as a way to give back her knowledge of fashion design, reviving the notion that it’s more than a piece of clothing – it’s a work of art. She spends most of her time in class guiding their creativity. Art of Couture students include: Barb Bradham, Meaghan Senn, Tina Prideau, Adam Rich, Stacie Van Helpern, Taisha Seymore, Sherry Morris, Phyllis Tisch, Heather Jarvis,

News First Steps Taken to Make a Park on Lady’s Island a Reality Courtesy of the LIBPA Newsletter Slowly but surely progress is being made to provide the residents of Lady’s Island a recreational park to include a ball field and children’s playground. In 2008 25 acres of land located on Springfield Road was purchased for $750,000. The basic concept for the park has been approved and bids to design and build the first phase of the park will be accepted this month. The first phase of development will include a ball field, a picnic pavilion and a playground plus other basic infrastructure such as parking, fencing, signs and a security gate. The target date for completion of the first phase of construction is May of 2011. The final phase of the project (funding permitting) is projected to be completed during 2012.

be met. For example, the playground equipment shall include a minimum of two toddler age usage swings and four school age usage swings; one covered zip slide fit for toddlers and one open wave zip slide for school age children, with a stepped platform and overhead tree climber; one monkey/ crunch bar, one rock wall, one tunnel-up crawl tube and one wave walk. A picture of the playground at the park at Pigeon Point in the City of Beaufort plus other similar parks was provided as examples of the general type of design desired for the Lady’s s Island park.

The site for the other park of the future planned for Lady’s Island is Crystal Lake on Lady’s Island Drive. A portion of this property (former site of Butler’s Boat business) will be used by the contractor building the new bridge until the end of 2011. This park, when developed, will be a passive park consisting of a children’s playground and trails around the lake. There will be no facilities such as ball or soccer fields to support organized activities. Hopefully, by the time the new bridge is completed and the contractor has vacated the Crystal Lake property we can have agreement on Phase II of development will a design for what the park include a second ball field, should include. It is a very a bathroom and concession attractive location and there stand building, a second is no shortage of ideas as to picnic pavilion, basketball how it could or should be The contractor will design courts and trails. Phase III used. and build the park but will provide lights for the has been given specific athletic fields and additional A special note of public requirements which must fencing. thanks is extended to District

7 County Councilman Paul Sommerville and Beaufort County Administrator Gary Kubic for their support

of the Lady’s Island park. Without their efforts we still would be looking for land on which to build a park.

Reunion Committee members of the Beaufort High School Tidal Wave Class of 1965 have been busy preparing for a reunion of classmates from all across the country. At a gathering on Sep 7th at the home of Jody (Class of ‘65) and Anita Henson, classmates and spouses discussed the final plans for this five year traditional event to be held Oct 8th and 9th at The Oaks Plantation and Brickyard Point Farms. Chairman Andy Kinghorn, King Teen that year, expressed the hope that all of our local classmates will consider attending this year and joining those who have moved away to share in the memories of the Class of ‘65.

The Tidal Wave football team had one of its finest seasons ever that school year at 8-1-1, the track team was perennial State Champion, and the Senior girls overpowered the Junior girls at the annual Powder Puff Bowl. Class Officers were President Jim Muskett, Secretary Scherra Wallace Flood and Treasurer Janie Stoor Culley; Patricia Ann Neal was Miss Senior; Steven Keyserling, a current BHS teacher, and

Courtesy of the LIBPA Newsletter Candidates’ Forum. At the October 12 meeting to be held in the Beaufort County Realtor’s Association headquarters the Lady’s Island Business and Professional Association will sponsor a forum for the candidates seeking to represent District 7 (Lady’s Island and Dataw) on the Beaufort County School Board. The forum is open to the public. New Meeting Place! The Lady’s Island Business and Professional Association will no longer hold their monthly meetings at the Sea Island Conference Center due to it having been sold to a church

as its new home. For the remainder of this year LIBPA meetings will be held at in the classroom of the Beaufort County Realtors Association located in the Palmetto Business Park behind BB&T on Lady’s Island Drive. Let us talk about who will cut the grass along Lady’s Island Drive. Very shortly Sanders Brothers Construction will complete the newly widened Lady’s Island Drive and pass responsibility for keeping the grass cut along the new sidewalks to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. We, on Lady’s

Island, experienced a similar process with the widening of Sams Point Road. Along the widened portion of Sams Point Road the majority of the adjacent property consisted of homes or businesses and with only a few exceptions they pitched in and have maintained the landscaping along the sidewalks and road. Lady’s Island Drive is another story in that there are very few residents or businesses along much of the road. Another challenge is that portions of the property is in the City of Beaufort (St. Peters, Barbara Jean’s restaurant and the undeveloped property leading to the intersection) with the rest being in Beaufort County until you get to the bridge where the Town of Port Royal property line is established. The City of Beaufort is negotiating with the Town of Port Royal to route

traffic to the sea islands across the McTeer Bridge versus traveling through downtown Beaufort. This means we will have a 2.5 mile strip of newly widened road with sidewalks belonging to 4 government entities serving as a gate way to the sea islands and unless there is a cooperative solution found expect a lot of tall grass along the road which will eventually overcome the sidewalks. The last layer of resurfacing for Lady’s Island Drive. Sander’s Brothers has done a superb job of widening Lady’s Island Drive, constructing sidewalks beside the newly widened road and managing to keep the traffic flowing in a very efficient manner. Recently there has not been a great deal of activity on the project and many have expressed concern

that perhaps the project has reached a stopping point. A check with Mr. Frank Hribar, Dennis Corporation manager for the project, indicates the present schedule will have the final layer of resurfacing being put down during the month of September. LIBPA to promote Lady’s Island with special decals. We all have seen vehicles with decals showing the owner is from Hilton Head (HH) or Beaufort (BFT). The Lady’s Island Business and Professional Association is purchasing 1000 decals designed by Spectrum Graphics showing a LI along with a palm tree. These decals will be distributed free of charge in local businesses as a way of promoting our island and community.

Nutrition for Your Eyes Scientists are looking at the role that nutrition plays in protecting eye health. The research shows that a diet high in certain nutrients may be linked to eye health. Taking certain nutritional supplements has also been shown to benefit those with age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Mark Siegel, MD, FAAO Board Certified, American Board of Opthalmology www.seaislandophthalmology.com

Taking an AREDS supplement may help slow AMD The large Age-Related Eye Diseases Study (AREDS), funded by the National Eye Institute, found that people with AMD may be able to slow the progression of the disease by taking a specific amount of nutritional supplements called the AREDS formula. These supplements are: Vitamin C (500 mg); Vitamin E (400 IU); Beta-carotene (15 mg); Zinc oxide (80 mg); and Copper oxide (2 mg) But before stocking up on these supplements, be sure to talk with your ophthalmologist to learn if they are recommended for you. Some people should not take large doses of antioxidants or zinc for medical reasons. Also, beta carotene has been shown to increase the risk of lung cancer in people who currently smoke or recently quit smoking.

Choose foods rich in eye-healthy nutrients The high levels of nutrients evaluated in the AREDS study are very difficult to get from diet alone. However, eating well is a key part of a healthy lifestyle. Making the right food choices every day provides the nutrients our eyes and the rest of our body need. Research has found that eating foods high in vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA may be good for eye health, as well as general health. To increase your dietary intake of these nutrients, enjoy dark green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, vegetable oils, nuts, whole grains, and cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines.

Choose low-glycemic foods if you have diabetes People who have diabetes, or are at risk for this disease, can also benefit by following a low-glycemic

index (low-GI) diet. Most people with diabetes, and others who have used a low-GI diet to lose weight, are familiar with glycemic index charts. A food’s GI value is based on how fast the carbohydrates in that food raise the body’s blood sugar levels; low GI foods have less impact on the ups and downs of blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that better control of blood sugar levels slows the onset and progression of diabetic retinopathy, caused by damage to the blood vessels in the retina. As you think about ways to improve your eye health, remember: vitamins and nutritional supplements are not a cure for eye disease, nor will they give you back vision that you may have already lost. But good nutrition at all ages is vital for your entire body, and plays an important role in maintaining healthy eyes. Talk with your ophthalmologist about any concerns you have about your eye health.

Profile This is the second article in a Three-Part Series on area High School Football Teams. Next week, we will feature Battery Creek High School.

Whale Branch High School Varsity Football Team a Class Act By Wendy Pollitzer

The inaugural year for the Whale Branch High School Warriors has proven to be a good one so far. Coached by Rob D’Amato, the Warriors are 3-1, with a loss to Hardeeville last Friday. I had the privilege of joining the team for practice Monday afternoon. And no, practice didn’t start on the field. It started in the classroom. I listened as the Offensive and Defensive Coordinators, as well as Coach D’Amato, reviewed last Friday’s game on video. They pointed out the team’s mistakes as well as their strengths.

D’Amato is also big on consistency, not only on the field, but in the classroom as well. “We want to be consistent in everything we do…in the dress code, in the way we play, in our academics.” So D’Amato rewards his players for doing just that.

2010 Whale Branch High School Warriors. Photo courtesy of Bob Sofaly For more photos, please visit our website at www.YourIslandNews.com

“You know, when we review a game on Monday after a win, you lose the kids in a video review. But when you lose, they really listen when you point out the good and the bad of the game,” explains Coach D’Amato. The resounding message on this particular Monday after Friday’s loss was, “tackling.” After Coach D’Amato asked the young men what the worst part of Friday’s defense was, the classroom agreed, “Tackling!” So guess what the team worked on once they arrived on the field? You guessed it…tackling. Coach D’Amato, a 2003 graduate of Presbyterian College, received his

Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina. While at school, D’Amato coached at Brookland-Cayce High School in Columbia and then moved on as Assistant Coach at Goose Creek High School. He’s now loving his role as Head Coach at Whale Branch. “So far, I’ve been very impressed with the kids and the community’s enthusiasm. The atmosphere is tremendous,” exclaims D’Amato. When asked about the team, D’Amato explains, “We’ve got significant progress to make and a long way to go, but we’ll get there. I’ve got a strong football background, and the kids appreciate that. Coaching is a

tremendous vehicle for helping people, so I hope I can help these kids.”

Andrew Byam, a Junior Linebacker agrees. “He’s pretty smart and very organized.”

So far this year, only one player has received a Black Jersey, and it was on Monday. Trey Nelson, a sophomore Linebacker, donned the Black Jersey during the entire practice. “He deserves it. Trey is an outstanding young man. He’s a standout kid. His lowest grade is a 92,” says D’Amato. “And I’m confident all of my players will wear a Black Jersey. That’s the plan, anyway.”

The young men like Coach D’Amato’s style, though they are learning his new schemes. Byam explains, “We’re used to throwing the ball, but we’re learning how to run with it.”

Modest Trey responded softly when I asked him if he was excited to receive the Black Jersey. “I like it; I wasn’t expecting it. I’m very grateful for it, and you better believe I’m going to wear it!”

You see, most of these guys played for Battery Creek last year. This is their first year at the new High School. And get this…there are NO SENIORS on the team. Every one of these guys will be coming back next year.

Trey, Steadman, Andrew and Josh are exceptional young men. They’ve all played together in the past and look forward to an exciting and hopeful winning season. It was a real pleasure to sit and chat with them and Coach D’Amato as well.

And so far, he is. Quarterback Steadman James describes Coach, “We understand him and he understands us. He knows each guy’s athletic ability and puts him in the right role.”

I asked Josh Fields, a Junior Running Back, about the team. “We’re getting better every day. It’s a team sport, so we all get to know how to work together. The best part is that everyone is coming back next year!” Entire treatment completed in just 90 minutes. NO DOWN TIME! Leaves hair smooth and frizz-free WITHOUT harsh chemicals! D’Amato created a “Black Jersey” program that has become the highest honor a player can receive in a season, besides being named permanent Captain. A player has to earn the Black Jersey and can wear it on the practice field. He’s got to play and practice hard, demonstrate exceptional character on and off the field and be positive.

Coach D’Amato is a strong supporter of academics as well as athletics. He insists on Study Hall twice a week, and if the students average 75 or lower, they must attend Study Hall every day. The coaches also conduct ACT and SAT prep courses. It helps that three coaches on the team are Science, Social Studies and English teachers.

So what’s in store for the game Friday night against Allendale? You better believe these kids will be tackling! Coach D’Amato explained to the players as they left to get dressed out for practice, “Nick Saban of Alabama does it the best. His team is always mentally prepared. You’ve got to be mentally prepared Friday night. Your mentality on defense will determine what happens on that next drive. Bend and Don’t Break!” Thanks Coach D’Amato for inviting me to practice. Your team is exceptional and I wish you all the luck this season. Go Warriors!

Lunch Bunch

Lunch Bunch Dines at Bistro Patois By Wendy Pollitzer

Once again, the Lunch Bunch had the divine pleasure of going to dinner instead of the usual lunch this week. We were more than pleased with our experience, our food and our service! Director of Operations at Plums, Inc., Chip Dinkins, and Chef de Cuisine, Penn Ten Eyck of Bistro Patois, invited us to the old-French style restaurant in Habersham Marketplace. Bistro Patois is a gem of a dining establishment. If you haven’t been, make reservations this evening! It’s incredible. I mean everything is top-notch. The quaint dining room reminds one of a true French farmhouse in the countryside. The food is simple, yet bursts with flavor. Dishes are comfortable and approachable, yet served with elegance and flair. Executive Chef at Plum’s Inc. is Jim Spratling. His commitment to utilizing fresh, regional ingredients and locally farmed produce strengthens his already solid relationship with area farmers, many who know “Chef Jim” by first name. Nicholas Miranda served the table. His professionalism and charm impressed the Lunch Bunch. He was our server last time we visited during lunch, and we were happy to work with him again. Nicholas brought the table a delicious Cheese Plate, complete with farm fresh crumbled Blue Cheese served with tasty blueberries and Tupelo Honey from Bluffton. The trio melted in our mouths. It was the perfect combination of bitter and sweet.

cauliflower puree that accompanied the meal. It was so good, we ordered a side for the entire table to share. The flavor was simply awesome! Nicholas then brought more Chocolate Mousse for the rest of us who enjoy sweets after dinner. We also shared Crème Brule, which was equally flavorsome. Needless to say, we were all quite replete. Nicholas Miranda (left) and Penn Ten Eyck first” by Ernestine Ulmer. I just love April’s attitude. If only everyone could get a little bit of April, we’d all live uncomplicated, happy lives!

Thank you to the staff at Bistro Patois for another unforgettable experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! And remember to make your reservations today by calling 379-2207. You may also visit www.bistropatois. com and view the full menu. If you’re interested in hosting the Lunch Bunch at your establishment, please email us at theislandnews@gmail.com. We’d love to come visit! Anyway, April ordered the Chocolate Mousse, made by none other that Susan Zara of SuZara’s Bakery. Sea salt was sprinkled on top for added zest. Oh, it was yummy! You can never really go wrong with SuZara’s baking. April then asked for the Grilled Skirt Steak served with maitre d’hôtel butter and pommes frites. Pamela asked for the Duck Leg Confit and Summer Vegetables, while I opted for the Flounder A’ La Meuniere with sautéed sweet peas and a slab of bacon. The three of us were pleasurably satisfied with our meals. Kim and Elizabeth quarreled a bit over who was going to order the Pan Seared Sea Scallops, served with a cauliflower puree, plump golden raisins and capers. Kim won (the older sister always does)! So Elizabeth asked Nicholas for the Gnocchi A’ La Parisienne, summer

Unfortunately Christina and Heather could not join us this week. However, we were delighted with the company of Pamela Uhles, a new friend of The Island News. Pamela ordered the Steamed Mussels Mariniere, served with white wine, garlic and herbs to start. Elizabeth and Kim shared the Beef Tartare, accompanied by capers, shallots, Dijon mustard and baguette toasts. Both appetizers were amazing. April did not order an appetizer. Get this. She ordered dessert first. She was craving something sweet and said, “What the heck.” I’m reminded of the quote, “Life is uncertain. Eat dessert

Beaufort’s Little Kindnesses
Adorable I always try to highlight in my column what I think is unique or good about Lanier Laney Beaufort, and yes we have beautiful views and gorgeous homes, and the water is of course great; but to me, over time, what has stood out most that sets Beaufort apart from any of the big cities I have lived in, or even Charleston, or Savannah for that matter are ‘all the little kindnesses’ that occur around Beaufort each day between people here. Take my neighbor of ten years Mr. Cook, for example, who just passed away at age 90 after having lived all his life in Beaufort. Soon after moving in, I started finding thoughtful items like a bag of boiled peanuts or fresh picked collards dropped off at my gate. Then one day there appeared a brown shopping bag, and inside was a birdhouse he had made and painted with my initials on the roof. And I didn’t even know he new my name. Then I started noticing that there were similar birdhouses with initials on their roofs all over the neighborhood. Turns out Mr. Cook had made and given away possibly hundreds of birdhouses to people over the years. Then I started noticing how many other kindnesses happen on a regular daily basis around Beaufort. People drop off casseroles when people are moving or just because they made an extra one. My

neighbor got a styrofoam cooler of fresh caught fish one day and still doesn’t know who dropped it off. My 88 yr. old neighbor Dottie McDaniel once dropped off her favorite poem about trees along with a lovely note, which started me into the habit of dropping off items on her back door too.

spent 20 years in a city (L.A) when you would regularly read in the paper about someone who had died in their house, and it took six months before anyone noticed. That would never happen in Beaufort. People notice, they care, and the gossip turns into a network of support that holds the town together. I found out at the funeral that Mr. Cook had a whole group of friends that had looked out for him over the years since his children had all moved to Virginia. They would take him shopping or drive him to the doctor or drop off a bunch of fresh vegetables.

Mr. Cook also taught me that a smile and a kind hello is also a kind gift as he passed my house everyday on the way to the post office for ten years. To been seen and recognized and appreciated by another human being Mr. Cook’s birdhouse is something unique and special we have At Christmas time there was suddenly a in abundance here in Beaufort that takes deluge of thoughtful items, homemade many, many forms all day long. Wine

When You’re Good You’re Good aromas and flavors. And the acidity. The wine has floral notes with hints of lemon, tangerine and melon flavors. There is also a touch of herbal flavors which gives it a tad of greeness that I really like. And, there is no oak used in any part of this wine’s making or aging. It goes into its bottles from the stainless steel tanks. All of this considered, it was a perfect choice for for me that night. Then, there is the “label” and the name. The label is not paper, but a really pretty “painting” on the bottle. Its fish, four of them, in shades of peach and aqua. How cooling and calming is that? You have to admit, labels are strong incentives in some of your wine choices too - ones you like and ones you don’t like. And the name - it tells you just what you can enjoy with this wine, besides getting home from traveling. Ceviche. So seafood of all sorts is perfect if you need to eat when you have this wine. Or, choose your food to go with the wine. Still easy with the name. Ceviche. Know what else is still easy? The price. At $7.97 we can all drink this wine all the time. And there you have it, one trip done, one safe return, and one really great bottle of Ceviche Sauvignon Blanc empty. I guess I had more than I planned on. But I loved riit. How’s that for profound? I suppose, when it comes to wine, it’s particularly true. With wine, though, it not only has to be good, but the right choice for the time, place, and, most important of all, mood. Last week, we talked about my packing bottle. (Yes, my packing was as good as usual. Not!) Then, after four days of heavy duty wine tasting work in Napa, a wonderful fourteen hour airplane and airport trip home, and time changes that are so easy to adjust to, I got home late Friday night and decided a glass of wine while I got relaxed and wound down enough to get to bed. Right away I knew this bottle would have to be easy drinking, chilled already because I did not pick it before I left, and not require too much attention to enjoy it. That means something that I’d had before, liked, could drink just two small glasses and get to bed. I don’t ever unpack the night I get home, so there is no such thing as an unpacking bottle. But, I did have to get a couple of things out of my suitcase after it got tossed on the bathroom floor. Phone chargers, stuff like that, had to come out and, right close to the top was my Govino wine glass. And that had to come out to have my wine. A great travel glass and perfect for unpacking too. Really, it’s a lovely glass.

Q&A Dental Implants Dr. Stephen Durham, DMD, FAGD, LVIF

1-Dr. Durham, I have an old bridge that keeps breaking, are there any other options? Yes. Dental implants can replace one or more missing teeth, and can also be used to anchor your bridge.

3-How long is the procedure to put in the implant? With mini-implants, the procedure takes about an hour and generally only requires local anesthetic.

2-Does it work with dentures too? Just as with anchoring a bridge, dental implants can be used to anchor dentures as well. The placement of implants for a bridge or dentures will also provide for a more comfortable and solid fit.

4-Mini-implants? How are they different from regular ones? Unlike two-stage traditional implants, mini-implants consist of very small titanium posts and are placed in one visit, unlike two-stage traditional implants.

Mini-implants, costing considerably less, are also a cost-effective alternative to traditional implants. 5-How long is the healing process afterwards? Healing time is always determined on a patient by patient basis. As miniimplants don't usually require any surgery or incision, they generally do not require months to heal.

News Beaufort Symphony Announces 2010-2011 Season By Christine A Raskind With the last glorious notes of Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slav still ringing through the hall, the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra announces plans for its 25th season! Subscriptions are now available on the BSO’s website at www.beaufortorchestra.org. World-renowned keyboard artist, Danile Adni will return for the opening concert in October of 2010. Mr Adni is a resident of London, England and a celebrated performer with orchestras and chamber groups throughout Europe. He appeared with the Beaufort Symphony last year, with the generous support of local music patron, Martha Hoke. Mrs. Hoke will again sponsor Mr. Adni’s performance with the orchestra in October. While preparing for last season’s concerts Maestro Fred Devyatkin and Adni quickly formed both a personal friendship and a professional partnership. “Daniel brings

exceptional artistry and technical facility to his performances, and balances his passion for playing with a sense of grace and good humor,” said Devyatkin. A huge fan of Ludwig van Beethoven, Devyatkin loves to program the compositions of the renowned composer. The new season’s opening concert will offer two towering works by Beethoven – Piano Concerto # 3 with Mr. Akno at the keyboard, and Symphony # 7 for orchestra. Next year also promises to be a bright on for the Beaufort Youth Orchestra! We have been able to double the number of yearend scholarships provided to the young musicians as a result of generous contributions from the greater Beaufort community over the past season. Several youth will attend music camps the summer, while others will continue with private lessons from area teachers. If you would like to have more information about participation in or

support for the Beaufort Youth Orchestra, please contact Greta and Ron Maddox at 843-8388001. The Beaufort Symphony Board of Directors joins president Ed Like in thanking all who have helped us to ‘Keep The Music Live’ in the past by contributing in a great many ways to our organization. If you would like to make a contribution, place and ad in our 2010-2011 season programs, or support the adult or youth orchestras in any way, we invite you Ed Like at 843-838-1237. We welcome new and returning subscribers to the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra family and look forward to seeing you at the wonderful concerts the Maestro and orchestra members have in store for you. Facebook Cheat Sheet By Cherimie Crane For those of you that are lost in Cherimie Crane the abyss that is social media, don’t panic. There is help. The following cheat sheet will serve as a life raft should you find yourself drowning in the tsunami known as Facebook. It is highly recommended you memorize or keep the following in a safe, easily accessible location. Friend- someone you have met, never met, will never meet, wouldn’t know you if you did meet, yet an individual that you obsessively read about, browse photos, and follow updates as if were the recipe for a cure for the common cold. Can also be a person you wish to know more about in order to plot revenge of varying degrees. Types of friends include: The Happy Friend: This person is obviously has a frequent flyer card through the Walgreens pharmacy. Nobody is that happy all the time. Nobody. The Scary Friend: The person hates somebody or something at some point each and everyday. They use ALL CAPS and/or &#(&@^_’s a lot. The Melodramatic Friend: This person finds the most suitable form of communication is either lines from a dead poet, lyrics from an Air Supply song, and if that doesn’t work, they will post a video of some dark, sad, extremely deep country

music video. They have feelings. Lots and lots of feelings. Friend (verb) You can friend someone by sending them a request to be your friend. Obviously a spin off(aka grown up version) of the beloved tradition of elementary school note “Do you like me, yes or no” If this verb is reciprocated then you get a key to their home, their life, their children’s life, their emotions, their wardrobe, their ups and their downs. You do not have to like someone to Friend them. There are no basic requirements or obligations. Un-friend (verb)- This is the facebook version of dumping, breaking up, destroying BFF bond, publicly snubing and/or asking for your key back. Wall- This is where your friends (noun) will communicate their inner most feelings and wait with bated breath for you to comment or like. Everyone and their grandmother can see your comments. Think about it. Yes, grandmothers do facebook! Comment- This is when you respond to your friends (noun). Perfectly acceptable to have misspellings and to be void of basic grammar. Comments can often lead to “face book fighting” which is an entirely different article. Like (action)- This is your opportunity to show support for your friend without having to make a complete sentence,

word, or thought. A virtual From left: Bridgitt Long, Alex Compton, Brycen Ambrose, Megan thumbs up! Alvarez, Natalie Dardes, Katherine Taylor Unlike (action)- Remedy for Students from Linda Peters’s Beaufort Montessori School recently sold thinking you liked something t-shirts & bracelets at Berry Island Cafe on Lady’s Island to support or someone that you recently the Independence Fund, Lt. Dan Weekend and the 2010 Beaufort realized you, in fact, do NOT Shrimp Festival. The mission of the Independence Fund is to provide like. tools and therapy for those veterans who are severely injured in the Global War on Terror that they otherwise would not receive. Status Update: This is where anyone can say anything that can and will be used against them in a court of law (or worse, court of public opinion). Common Facebook Terms LML- Love My Life. That means that your friend is obviously having a stellar day, or is back on their medication. Happy Friend uses this one quite often. HML- Hate My Life. This means that your friend is obviously not having a stellar day, or has missed a dose. If this is seen near Scary Friend, contact authorities, immediately. LOL- Someone is laughing out loud or at least they want you to think they are. Melodramatic Friend uses this along with all other abbreviated emotions sometimes in the same hour. LAWL- This person LOL’s with a southern drawl. Obviously it would take more than one article for me to completely educate you on the mysterious world of Facebook. If you want more information just friend me! Happy Facebooking!

Pets

Rolling in It By Tracie Korol

As much as I advocate for dogs living a dog’s life, I can be as disgusted as a non-dog person when a Best Friend shows up anointed in liquid squirrel, or worse, if there is such a thing. My favorite exquisite boarders, Spud, is notorious for the speed in which he can exit his owners’ car, run around the house to the back door, and somewhere in those 30-45 seconds locate a previously unknown putrescent heap to roll in. “Dude! Your stink is going to reach Brevard before your humans do!” He just grins as I prepare Bath #1. In all my years of dog handling I have never been able to move fast enough or yell loud enough to get between a delicious stink and a determined dog. Even dogs on lead in the center of town can and will find a tiny morsel of death upon which to roll. While I thought living in the wilds of Vermont provided limitless opportunity for gross out, clients tell me A Day at the Beach is much worse. For them, it’s a limitless dream come true for their dogs. Why do they do it? Don’t they understand that after we make the Universal Sound of Dismay (“aarrrnnghh!”), the only recourse is a bath? One theory suggests that the dog is not trying to pick up odors from the stinking mess it rolls in, but is actually trying to cover that smell with their own scent. It is certainly true that dogs will often roll around on something, like a new toy or a new bed, as if trying to deposit their scent. Some behaviorists suggest that dogs will rub against people to leave a trace of their scent and to mark the individual as a member of the pack, much the way a cat would. Another theory is that rolling in glom is a sort of calling card. If you watch when they’re rolling

BowWOW!

Facts, observations and musings about Our Best Friends

BowWOW! Is a production of Tracie Korol and wholeDog. Tracie is a holistic behavior coach, a canine massage therapist (CCMT), herbalist, and canine homeopath. Want more information? Have a question? Send a note to Tracie at letstalk@wholedog.biz or visit www.wholedog.biz. in it, they will try to get the smell on theirbacks, especially between their shoulders or on their necks, but not on their legs or belly. Now watch as another dog approaches. They will come close in a little circle from the front. After some facial and ear movements have occurred and they both acknowledge an approach is safe, the new dog will sniff from the front to the rear end. The applied smell your guy wears overtop his standard “den” aroma identifies him and indicates a certain “rank”. No pun intended. If you take an inventory of what your dog rolls in you’ll discover they are choosing only to anoint themselves with something organic, such as dung or vintage carrion. Since the wild ancestors of dogs were not only hunters but also scavengers, much of the stuff they rolled in could still possibly be edible. One notion is that once the wild dog rolled in ex-elk and returned to the pack, other members of his group could pick up this scent and know that there was something nearby that could pass for food. One would expect, based on that theory, that pack members would immediately start backtracking toward the site where their pack mate came from. Sounds plausible. From this behaviorists’ viewpoint, I believe that when dogs were still wild and had to hunt for a living, rolling in a “cloaking” odor was an attempt at disguise. If an antelope smelled

the scent of a wild dog nearby, it would likely bolt and run for safety. For this reason wild dogs learned to roll in antelope dung or carrion. Logically, antelopes accustomed to the smell of their own droppings and carrion common on open plains, would be less likely to be frightened or suspicious of a hairy thing coated with that smell rather than the same visitor smelling like a wolf looking for lunch. The wild hunting dog could get much closer to its prey. In non-hunting, couch-dwelling housedog time, cloaking in something ripe and organic is vastly superior to a dog’s nose than having to carry a smell of artificial bubblegumscented shampoo.

Beaufort Agility Club recruits championship instructor... The Beaufort Agility Club sponsored by Beaufort Dog is excited to start their fall (Oct. 6th) agility season with Windi Williams-Weaver, national competitor and enthusiastic lover of the sport. Agility is so good for dogs in so many ways. It provides an outlet for behaviors, a sense of purpose, a reinforcement in basic commands, a mentally challenging exercise for owner and dog, a bonding experience and a lot of fun!

I have another theory, however, which may hold no scientific Handlers can be of any age, merit, whatsoever. Vision is the size, and shape. Although most dominant sense for humans while for dogs it is their sense of smell. Dogs, like people, enjoy sensory stimulation and seek such stimulation, too. Therefore, I believe that the real reason that dogs roll in obnoxious smelling organic manner is an expression of the same misbegotten sense of aesthetics that causes human beings to wear big jewelry and loud Hawaiian shirts. Note: I’ve found that one part hydrogen peroxide, one part baking soda and a generous squirt of Dawn dish detergent will knock down just about any grease-based aroma. Spuddy is a cheerful veteran of many such baths.

handlers do, he or she does not have to run the course, even the disabled can participate.
