World Champions Gather at Pool Sharks By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow – July 17, 2006

World Champions and Hall of Famers gathered at Pool Sharks in Las Vegas to practice on the only Certified IPT equipment (Diamond Tables) and hone their skills before the IPT’s North American Open 8Ball Championships. John Kutcher, IPT Pro and owner of Pool Sharks, presented me with an opportunity to find out, “What the players think from Pool Sharks in Las Vegas before the $2,000,000 IPT Tournament” The IPT with its Million Dollar plus tournaments has captured the imagination of every competitive pool player. I asked these World Champions what they thought about the opportunity and challenges presented them by playing on the IPT. LOU BUTERA (Machine Gun Lou) was the first to respond, “What I think is it’s the greatest thing that happened to pool ever! 9-Ball has got so much luck involved in it with the rules they play today, I’d much rather be playing 8-Ball. I think most players feel that way about it too.” Playing on IPT equipment involves slow nap cloth, tight pockets and long hours of play. When I asked Lou how he thought it would affect

him, he answered, “I don’t think the slow nap will really affect me

Lou Butera

because a player is supposed to be able to adjust. I grew up on that type of cloth. I didn’t grow up on Simonis. Most of the older players never even saw Simonis cloth because it was too expensive for the room owner to put on all their tables. I started playing at the age of 7 and now I’m 69.” “Pool is still the greatest game in the world! You have people in their 70’s competing with people in their teens more or less. Even a lot of the old timers can still play pretty good. Unfortunately, a lot is going to depend on the break.” So I asked if breaking from the box

was going to affect his game? And Lou commented, “It’s going to for me because I don’t hit as hard as when I was younger. It’ll affect some of the older players but some can still hit the ball really solid. The straight pool players are going to have a lot more run outs than the 9Ball players. The 9-Ball players are going to rely on shot making. You better be thinking more about the pattern of play in 8-Ball.” The conversation was then turned over to ED KELLY (Champagne Eddie) who had this to say about the IPT, “I think it’s a wonderful

good stroke.” I asked Ed to elaborate on the Diamond Tables and he said, “The Diamond Tables roll as true as any table I’ve ever played on. My favorite table was always the Brunswick Anniversary. That was the one with the wood side panels with the three white lines. I think it’s because of the one-piece slate plus they’re heavier, they’re thicker which tends to make the ball roll further. A lot of people don’t know that. Anytime the slate is heavier and thicker, the cue ball will throw further because it’s more solid. For example a cue ball will roll further on granite than paper and it will roll truer.” “I think the IPT is doing a wonderful job – unfortunately it doesn’t look like I’m going to be able to go to Reno. I work at the Las Vegas Hilton and can’t get time off to go to Reno for 3 days. It’s tough to give up a tournament and still be in the top 100 to qualify for the 2007 tour,” remarked Ed. The opportunity to play on this tour for this kind of money is unheard of on the professional pool circuit until now. Even those players that lose Ed Kelly out after the first round will be paid opportunity for the young, good $2,000! players today. I wish it were done The conversation then turned to 30 years ago. I think it’s the greatest DALLAS WEST who gave us his thing that ever happened to pool.” thoughts on the IPT, “The biggest Ed had his own take on the ‘slow thing I’m doing to prepare is that I nap’ question saying, came here a “I think all the talk couple of about the slow nap is weeks early to a bunch of bologna. play around, I’ve played on mud! It get used to the doesn’t make any weather and difference. The just hit the players get used to it balls. I haven’t in 5 minutes. We’re used to FAST. When I was a kid playing, playing on the faster nap but we’re that’s pretty much what they played playing a game where you’ve got to on. The high class tournaments wack the balls a little bit. 8-Ball is used Simonis #2 for pool and that type of game. I personally don’t Simonis #1 for 3 Cushion. They think you have to be as precise as make too much out of it. That’s you do on the fast cloth – there’s a because only one person can win. difference in thinking there. I think I’ve played in a zillion world you can get away with a little more tournaments and its always the on the slower cloth.” same – the ones that don’t win, “The tighter pockets won’t really knock the equipment. I think the come into play until the middle of Diamond Tables are some of the the tournament. The cloth is a little best tables ever made – the cloth slower, the rails a little slower, so is the cloth. By: Bob Jewett at the IPT in Las Vegas

I’m writing this article at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas after the first day of play at the IPT North American Open 8-Ball Championships. It’s too late to buy tickets for this one but you have to get to the next event that will be in September in Reno. This is your best chance to see eight ball played at the highest level. Hall-of-Famers will be there. World champions in several different games will be there. Most importantly, you will get to see many different styles of play. Quite a few of the players have strong snooker backgrounds up to and including three or four world champions. If you have trouble pocketing balls, watch how they do it. I watched Ronnie O’Sullivan in two matches today, and although he wasn’t at top form, he played well enough to advance and made some moves to think about. He has the record for shortest perfect game in the World Snooker Championships — 147 points in five minutes and 20 seconds on a 6x12-foot table, for which he got a bonus of about $250,000. How many tournaments have you seen with players from Aruba, France, Montenegro and Morocco? You won’t see all of them in the later rounds, but you will see some surprisingly good play from players you not only have never heard of but you’ve never even heard of their country. You will also see Ronnie O’Sullivan lots of matches of youth versus experience. These tend to feature interesting safeties by the old coots and expensive mistakes — or remarkable run outs — by the whipper-snappers. The format of the event is perfect for spectators. If you have a favorite player, you are guaranteed to be able see him or her in at least 4 matches as the players are divided into groups of 5 and each one plays every other in the group. The top three in each group advance and the ones that get knocked out receive $2000. The remaining rounds are also round-robin format, down to the final 6. The top two from that round, meet in a single final match to determine the tournament’s winner. One problem with round-robin play is that you can have ties in a group. For example, the top two finishers in a group of 5 might each have a 3-1 record. Ties are broken by percentage of games won, and then by lesser factors such as break-and-runs and eights-on-the-break. You should be prepared for slightly different rules than you’ve seen before. Three fouls in a row is loss of game. It happened once in the roughly eight hours of pool I watched today, in one of those youth vs. experience matches. Also, all fouls are called, not just cue ball fouls. Your shirt touched a ball? Ball in hand for the other player. In spite of the amount of money at stake — getting into the second round guarantees at least $5000 — I saw no arguing or unsportsmanlike conduct surrounding this rule. There were referees available to make calls, but the players were usually on their own. Eight on the break wins. The production of the event is beyond any pool tournament you have ever seen before. 62 9-foot tables. Think about it. Think about setting up that many tables. It was possible by the use of the new Diamond tables with one-piece one-inch slate. There is a TV arena with two tables and high theater-style seating. To allow you to follow action on both tables, large flat-screen TVs are mounted up with the TV light fixtures. Each table in the arena has four or five TV cameras recording the shots. And there are more helpers for scoring and registration and other tasks than there are players in most tournaments. At the Venetian, the total prize fund is $2,000,000 with $350,000 for first. In Reno, this will be bumped up to $3,000,000 total. Tickets are more or less free. General admission – which offers great seating, but not ring-side — is only $40 for a whole week. The final match is another $40. Tickets are not sold at the door. Yes, that’s right, you have to get them ahead of time. Bottom line: get off your lazy behind, get to Reno, and see history in the making and some great eight ball to boot.

The richest tournament in history of pool was held July 23rd-30 th at the Venetian in Las Vegas. With a total purse of two million dollars, the winner took away $350,000 while last place in the 200-player field got $2000. And the game was eight ball. The North American Open had a truly international field with 29 countries represented from Aruba to Yugoslavia. The US had the largest contingent with slightly over half the players, while the United Kingdom, including Scotland and England, was second with 18. Except for the final match, all play was in round-robins with either five or six players in a group. In a group, each player played one match with every other player, and all the matches were races to 8 games. Since each group played all of its matches in one day, the players were all shooting from 10AM to 10PM each day. In Round 1, 200 players formed 40 groups of 5 and 3 players advanced from each group. Round 2 had 20 groups of 6 with half the players Thorsten Hohmann advancing. Round 3 had 12 groups of 5 with 3 advancing. Round 4 was 6 groups of 6 and half advanced, leaving 18 players in the tournament at the start of play on Friday. Along the way, the 80 eliminated in the first round got $2000 each. a $1000.00 added nine-ball open at its newly opened Shooter’s Pool Hall located inside the Classic Island Casino on Gage Boulevard in Kennewick Washington. Jeff Jackson manager of Classic Casino pledged to have a monthly $1000.00 added tournament at Shooters Pool Hall in Kennewick and Longview. We will have alternating open and B tournaments in Longview at Cadillac Island Casino and Kennewick at Classic Island Casino. When we have an open in Longview we will have a B in Kennewick the same month. Then the following month we will switch and have an open in Kennewick and a B in Longview. The first Open 9 Ball at Kennewick had thirty five players, mostly from the local area, but also some of our regular tournament followers, Don Wirtaman, Scott Thurston, Stan Tourangeau, JD and Jeff Coates. The draw had it’s usual lopsided placement of players making the bottom side of the bracket an interesting place to be with Don Wirtaman, JD and Stan to fight for the point battle. The top of the

bracket was a little more forgiving and left Harold Prine looking like the favorite. Local player Dave Schneider had other ideas about that and made his way past Harold to play for the point. Meanwhile on the bottom bracket Stan got through Don and would face JD to see who would play Dave for the point. JD and Stan had an incredibly exciting match with JD taking a 7-0 lead and scratching on the snap for the eighth game. This gave Stan an opening and he quickly claimed four games and scratched on the next break. JD ran out to get on the hill 8-4, but the next break came up dry. Stan clawed his way to an 8-8 tie. The last game of the match had both players getting a chance for victory but Stan persevered for the win. The point match showcased local favorite Dave Schneider against Canadian Champion Stan Tourangeau with Stan coming out on top, this sent Dave to face JD to see who would have another shot at defeating Stan. The large crowd of onlookers got another good show from Dave and JD with the match going hill hill and Dave pulling off the win. The final match was also entertaining and showed once again why Stan is the Man as he defeated Dave Schneider for 1st place. 1st 2 nd 3 rd 4th 5th 7th

A+ rated program with over 25 years serving the hospitality industry Knowledge Service Support This month we are cueing the cue ball with follow. This month’s shot has been called the Hydraulic English Shot. This shot is from the Follow Discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (D.O.D.) of 6. Object ball letters coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To set this shot up position C ball and F Ball centered between the pocket points. The solo blocking ball is placed frozen to the foot cushion and halfway between the 1st and 2nd diamonds from pocket C. The cue ball is in hand anywhere behind the X line. The object of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to C ball, then carom to the foot cushion, rebound and go around the blocking ball with curve back to F ball. Pocket C ball and F ball as pocket letter designated. Special Note: Blocking ball MAY NOT BE HIT by the cue ball. Also extra cue ball contacts on the foot cushion are allowed, and a scratch is allowed. Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. Keep your cue as level to the plane of the table as possible. Aim the cue ball at ball C for a 3/4 ball aim. The cloth and rail height of each table are not the same so adjustments on cueing and speed of stroke differ greatly. You shouldn’t use a lot of power on this shot, and you don’t need to cue the cue ball to maximum follow. Start out cueing the cue ball with follow between the horizontal axis of the cue ball and maximum follow using a crisp moderate stroke. Adjust the amount of follow and speed until you get the cue ball to rebound and curve around the blocking ball to pocket F ball. Make sure your warm-up strokes are smooth and don’t forget to follow through.

Hot!!! And it got Hotter all month. July and August have been the traditional HOT months for Sacramento and July is already setting records. We’ve had 10+ days of 100 degree heat and the air conditioning of the pool hall has fulfilled the ‘cool’ escape from the weather and outdoors. The monthly One Pocket tournament had 22 players from northern California test their skills. The favorite was home boy Tony Chohan. Tony ran thru the winners side with wins over John Henderson, Tony Melendez, Jim Fabionar, and Roger Estelle in for the “Hot Seat”. Roger Estelle took wins from JAG, Melvin McKay, Ron Lilly and Frank Nordmann before meeting Tony “T-Rex” Chohan for the Hot Seat match. One the one-loss side, Mr. Estelle fought a tough battle with Trevor Smith (3rd) to meet Tony again in the Double Elimination Finals. Roger fought back in both matches to win the event. The last game of the second match went to the last ball. Tony had left the cue ball close to the center of the table but also on the same side of the table as Roger’s pocket. The object ball was frozen on the end rail, very close to the middle diamond. Roger looked at the cue ball and the object ball and announced, “I got to shoot it, both are lined up on the diamonds” and promptly kicked the ball on the rail into his pocket. The 9 Ball tournament was also HOT. Thirty six of northern California’s best players fought hard for the top 8 spots for payouts. This time T-Rex took the winner’s side with wins over Paul Juarez, Don Cody, Len B, Art Valencia and for the HOT Seat, Frank Nordman. Frank got to the Hot Seat with wins over Cesar T, Frank J., Craig Oden and Chris A. Frank had to defeat Trevor Smith on the one loss side to get the rematch with Tony. Trevor suffered a first round match loss to Tinsley Johnson. Mr. Smith then took wins from Bob C., Bruce B, Peter, Joe P., Art Valencia, Taylor Townsend (7th), Chris A. (5th), Jeff Gregory (4th) and then Frank Nordman (3rd) before facing Tony Chohan. It was all Tony in the finals, Trevor has fought a great comeback from the first round loss, winning 9 matches. Wax On, Wax Off In the movie The Karate Kid, an eager Daniel-son can not see the value in the tasks he’s been asked to do. Mr. Miyagi has accepted him as a student and has him performing repetitive chores. In the beginning, Daniel spends his days waxing Mr. Miyagi’s car and painting his fence using very specific hand and arm movements. Ultimately, Daniel would become fed up with the tedious repetition. Fortunately for him, it was not before he had logged in enough hours to condition his body to act out the skillful movements he’d learned. Daniel had in fact been unknowingly learning defensive blocks, the Samm Diep fundamental first step in karate training. By continuously performing specific actions, he had trained his body and muscle to memorize those movements. Those same actions then carried over from his chores to karate where during the big tournament, even as an underdog; he was able to utilize those skills to make it to the semifinals. I won’t ruin the rest of the movie for you if you have not yet seen it. I will, however, let you know that all the painting and waxing he did is not unlike the alignment and stroke work we can do to improve our pool game. The following are just a few examples of some painting and waxing you can do without actually playing. These are only some of the many ways to train your body and develop the essential skills to perform when needed. Remember, Daniel did hours and hours of painting and waxing, so the more time you can devote, the better. 1. Find a table and form your bridge at the edge and freely stroke your cue. Find a straight line on the floor or lay a broomstick down directly below your cue. When looking down, your pool cue should completely cover the line or stick below you. If any part of that line is exposed, then your cue is not moving in a perfectly straight back and forth motion. This exercise also works well when placing your bridge hand on the pool table rail and stroking directly over the line where the wood meets felt. 2. Find a table in front of a mirror. Make sure you are able to see your profile (a mirror to the right side for righties and to the left side for lefties). With your average bridge length and a level cue, check in the mirror to make sure your stroke hand is perpendicular to the playing cue. This won’t be perfect or exact for each shot depending on how far away you are bridging, but it’s a helpful reminder. 3. If you’re able to film yourself, that’s always a great tool. Set up a tripod directly behind you and set up a series of the same shot. Make sure your stroke comes directly back and forth and not side to side. Most people have never seen themselves play before and may not be aware of any subtle quirks. (You’d be amazed at the many things you catch yourself doing on camera!) 4. When you have some time to kill, instead of turning the TV on, find a mark on the wall or an object within five feet of you. Find a pinpoint spot and focus your eyes on it for as long as you possibly can. Try not to allow any other thoughts to seep in. Try not to think about anything. This was a task the monk had given me a couple years ago to help increase my focus level. It’s much more difficult than it may sound. 5. Of course all relaxation and breathing exercises, or anything to strengthen your mind and body when you’re away from the table, are always great ways to stay sharp.

PACS Super Tournament Plan to Join the Pacific ACS and Participate in the Largest Tournament to Date The Pacific ACS is excited to announce a new partnership for it’s annual tournament in March of 2007. We have negotiated with Little Creek Casino to host our event. The tournament at Little Creek promises to be the largest amateur event in the State of Washington to date. The casino has agreed to be a true partner to the Pacific ACS bringing the added money to $12,500. Little Creek is conveniently located in Shelton, Washington west of Olympia and minutes from I-5. This year the ACS will be combining it’s 8 and 9 ball events into one “super tournament”. Singles events will include divisions for masters, open, novice and possibly seniors in 8 and 9 ball (no novice in 9). There will be Master and Open Scotch Doubles and also 4 person Women’s and Open/men’s 8 ball team division. ALL divisions will feature added money. Table and tournament management will again be provided by Gary Benson of High Country Promotions. JOIN YOUR LOCAL LEAGUE NOW: The PACS fiscal year runs from the first of June 2006 through the end of May 2007. Players must play eight weeks in a qualifying league session in order to compete at Little Creek and in the national event in Las Vegas in June 2007, summer leagues are in progress now. Membership dues are $20 per annum, with $10 going to the national ACS organization and $10 remaining with PACS. Members are invited to play in as many sessions and different leagues throughout the year as they would like, for this one time annual membership amount. To qualify for an ACS league, or if you yourself would like to consider being a league operator, please check the PACS website at www.pacificacs.org for information and contacts. COME JOIN THE ONLY ‘NOT FOR PROFIT POOL ASSOCIATION’, A TRUE PLAYERS LEAGUE, AND BE PART OF HISTORY AT LITTLE CREEK CASINO.

ARTISTIC POOL FOUNDATION Verified and submitted by: Tom “Dr. Cue” and Marty “Ms. Cue” Rossman, Event Coordination and Direction Team

The internationally recognized sport of “Artistic Pool” continues to build on its “foundational” principles established in 1990…via an expanding “amateur” and “junior” program base of industry supported events and private promoter efforts. “Artistic Pool” is oftentimes referred to as “trick shots and so much more”, primarily due to its multi-skilled presentations and the “artistic” beauty displayed through its 8 disciplines of challenge. The professional side of this magnetic cuesport art form has also enjoyed great strides in sponsor/media recognition since its inception in 2000 under the supportive eye of the WPA (World Pool Billiard Association) and a special committee within its care called the WPA Artistic Pool Division. Additionally, the APTSA (Artistic Pool and Trick Shot Association) provides event and promotional development skills via player supported committee structures. The unified force of the “grass roots” foundation, the APTSA, the WPA/ WPA APD, and various private promoter interests is stronger than ever and helps to assure the long term growth of “Artistic Pool”. Following are the “Champion/Runner-up” results for the primary “junior” and “amateur” events held in 2006 for “Artistic Pool”: JUNIOR EVENTS: 14th Annual BCA Junior Championships (July 6 & 7 – Tucson, AZ) Evansville, IN 19 & Under Girls: 1st – Allison Hardwick Daly City, CA 2nd – Mary Rakin Folsom, CA 14 & Under Boys: 1st – Austin Murphy Boone, NC 2nd – Corbin Coe SPECIAL NOTE: For complete results of all junior and amateur events please visit: www.drcuepromotions.com (select blue ball) For complete results of all professional events please visit: www.artisticpoolplayers.com (select event)

SIDE POCKETS Because of the side pocket’s design and location at the middle of each long rail, certain scoring and positional moves can be made at the side pockets that aren’t possible or feasible at the corners. Some are well known, some aren’t. Off the point to score To the left is a well-known challenge shot: make the 1-ball w i t h o u t allowing the cueball to hit the right end rail. It’s easy to hit the 1-ball off the point, not so easy to make it in the corner. To make it a cinch, replace the 1-ball with a two-or-three combination. At the bottom is a shot I’ve never seen in a book, magazine article, on videotape, or in a tournament game. Either the balls never come to rest in this position or nobody thinks of it. An advantage of going off the point to score is that the frozen ball gets bumped to a better place. Even if the balls are arranged so that the 2-ball can be sneaked past the 3-ball and into the pocket with a soft stroke, the off-the-point option might still be better because of the relocation of the 3-ball. Two Escapes The jump shot to the right is faily easy as jump shots go. Depending on where the other balls are, this could be by far the best way to escape from a hook. At the bottom, the problem is to make the 7-ball and get position on the 9-ball at the right end of the table. One way is to hit the 7-ball in such a way that the cueball bounces off the pocket point as shown. The cueball will follow a similar path if the point is hit first, then the ball. Note that many off-the-pocket-point shots depend on accurate hits as well as good judgment, which is why the cueballs are shown only a foot or two way; at long range, precision hits are much harder to get.

Why the Ball Doesn’t Bounce Some time back I wrote “How the Ball Bounces” and it took a while for people to notice, but I have been very busy repairing Pat Sheehan tables via the internet. Those points I made really hit home and not very many mechanics are able to do a job that will correct the problems that were built into their table. I received 7 sets of rails in the last two weeks from all over the US. Don Lundy from Kalispell MT sent me a three year old set of rails from a Gold Crown IV. You can see from the photo below that the rubber was like a rock. It came off in pieces. Don didn’t want me to narrow the pockets; however the place where the nut plates were installed at the factory have to be filled so the bottom part of the rubber stays tight and you don’t get that “blip” sound at three placed on the rail. The holes have been patched and the rubber is on. The second set came from John Letch in Oro Valley, AZ. He has a Brunswick Centennial Table made in the 1945 to 1950 C1 series. Now this rubber was from 55 to 61 years old and was still playable; Don’s rubber was 3 to 5 years old. I have Rails from Wisconsin that have been changed on a Gold Crown III and the replacement has gone bad. We have rails from Illinois and N.Y, most of them with stone instead of rubber. Why could John’s rails last 60 years and Don’s die in such a short time. This is not only true of Brunswick for Diamond is worse, Valley, older Olhausen’s and I suppose every table manufacturer. I warrantee my tables for 25 years and have had to replace three sets out of 1,200 tables. The problem comes from the rubber manufacturers most of whom are in China. Latex is called the white gold of the Orient. Since all the natural rubber trees are being cut down in South America, the Plantations in the Far East are producing most of the latex in the world. They found that you needed to put polymers in the latex to condition the bounce for straight latex would cause the balls to go nuts when they hit the rail. The old monarch cushions had about 10% filler with a specific gravity of 1.35; the cushion in the 1990’s had as much as 50% specific gravity as high as 3.5. The polymers that have been added by the Chinese are “dirt cheap”. A shovel full of dirt from the back lot is much cheaper than a shovel full of Latex. They are only now finding out that a little more than enough is way too much. Those of you who spent thousands of dollars for a pool table have been cheated by the manufacturer trying to save a few bucks on the rubber. I have been very fortunate to find a supplier who has been wise enough to spend the bucks to get the best at a good price. For the past six years I have been buying cushions from Mike Serra with the M.B.S. Group. He provides me with K55 profile rubber which I do not have to change a Brunswick table to install, with a specific gravity 1.05 and an action like the old Super Speed when it was installed correctly. Mike insists that they use the finest clay available like they would make cosmetics with. This blend with less than 15% fill gives the perfect balance. (From The Work Bench continued on page 29)

The Summer Shootout RONNIE ALCANO UNTOUCHABLE AT BILLIARD PALACADE 1st $850: Filipino players (and other insiders) were aware of Ronnie Alcano already, RONNIE ALCANO drew a bye then defeated Fred Jones, Perry Rodgers, and his name was becoming more well-known recently as a result of his Lance Salazar, Michelle Rakin and Tony Chohan in the races to six, then defeated Salazar again in the championship match, 11-4. performance in Las Vegas a few weeks ago, where he qualified 2nd $500: for the prestigious 8-ball pro tour. But he had never been to LANCE SALAZAR defeated Mel Simpson, Trevor Smith, Jonny San Francisco, so this weekend we got a chance to see him Warren, lost to Alcano, beat Ed Clark, Ricardo Aquino, Ian Costello, in person. You didn’t have to watch very long to realize how Michelle Rakin and Tony Chohan before his 11-4 loss to Alcano in the good he is. After he had played only three or four games in finals. his first match, Allen Jones told me I could “Just write his 3rd $350: name next to that $850 first prize right now,” and Tom Seymour TONY CHOHAN drew a bye then defeated Deo Alpajora, Joe Pelayo, agreed, saying “He’s as good as Orcollo.” His 11-4 win over Nick Callado, Ian Costello, then lost to Alcano and Salazar. Lance Salazar in the finals was no surprise to anybody. 4th $260: It was a very mellow weekend at the Palacade, MICHELLE RAKIN drew a bye then defeated Eric De with nonstop free munchies and coffee provided Mesa, Mark Hernandez, Angel Abrajano, lost to by Francisco and Mirna Murcia, the Palacade Alcano, beat Tinsley Johnson, then lost owners. Their $1,000 added prize money was to Salazar. appreciated with a big round of applause as 5/6 $100: we got underway on Saturday afternoon. As tournament director, this was TINSLEY JOHNSON beat Kevin Scheper, one of my most trouble-free jobs. It was Francisco Palma and Jeff Gregory, then lost to a really cooperative and sportsmanlike Costello. Beat Frank Nordmann Jr., won by forfeit over crowd at the Palacade this weekend, Sullivan Zhang, then lost to Rakin. and as I saw various players enjoying 7/8 $85: a little conversation I was reminded RICARDO AQUINO drew a bye then defeated Tyler Tallant, that, to me, tournaments are very lost to Costello, beat Steve Lucas, Jeff Gregory, Angel Abrajano, much like reunions – pool-player then lost to Salazar. reunions with lots of money up for 7/8 $85: grabs. We are so lucky there are SULLIVAN ZHANG lost to Angel Abrajano then beat Francisco room owners willing to let the Palma, Warren Lew, Jonny Warren, Alberto Ramirez and Nick players take over their premises for Callado, then came in 20 minutes late on Sunday, forfeiting a weekend. to Johnson. another player if he happens to be hitting them better. In other words, if you take two guys with an equal break in 9-Ball, the one that gets the jump can put together 3 or 4 racks more easily than in 8Ball.” The prize money is the largest in pool so I asked Dallas, if that would affect him, “I think the $2,000,000 purse is going to make anybody nervous, but the more I get the opportunity to play for, the better I concentrate. So that’s a big help, when you’ve been playing for 30 years and playing for $10,000 for first place and it costs you $2,000 to go to the tournament, that can make all the difference in the world.” “I think my biggest assets will be if I’m breaking well and concentrating, that’ll be the two best things. If I feel like I’m hitting the balls good.” Dallas had definite ideas about playing 8-Ball and finished our conversation with these thoughts, “Kevin picked the right game. This is an international game. It’s John Kutcher ironic, a lot of people are liking 9-Ball now because there’s a lot more luck in it. I think if you go down the street and you ask 8 to 10 people about playing golf, you might have 3 or 4 that play golf or even tennis but pool, you’ll get 8 out of 10 that play and especially 8-Ball.” “You have to have a better break playing 8-Ball than 9-Ball. You can’t break from the side playing 8-Ball. You’ve got to break out of the box. It’s going to affect everybody because you’ve got to hit the head ball. From the side you can hit both balls and pull the 8-Ball out of there every time, like you do on the bar table, but you can’t do that here.” I then asked JOHN KUTCHER Pool Sharks owner and IPT Pro to add his thoughts, “I will be brief in my comments because you have just talked to the best players on the planet. I’m having the time of my life. How often do you get the chance to spend the afternoon hitting balls with four world champions, three of which are in the Hall of Fame. Tomorrow Mike Sigel will be here, Kim Davenport and Mike Massey will be here on Friday. It’s just going to get bigger and better. By the end of the week the players will be coming out of the woodwork. So many of the players I have met over the years have introduced me to other players and you end up knowing more and more players.” The Venetian in Las Vegas is hosting an historic event that hopefully will bring tournament pool play into the spotlight and give all competitive players the opportunity to vie for a chance to win a large purse often missing from pro events. I would like to thank Lou Butera, Ed Kelly, Dallas West and John Kutcher for taking the time to talk to me about the IPT. The excitement generated by this event is great for the game.

Spectacular Spectating (continued from page 5)

out at this level included Lou Butera, Linda Carter, Karen Corr, Robin Dodson, Ernesto Dominguez, Max Eberle, Mary Kenniston, Ray Martin, Mike Massey, Grady Mathews, Jose Parica, Arturo Rivera, Rob Saez, Lance Salazar, Stan Tourangeau, Shane Van Boening, Dallas West, and Ron Wiseman. The 60 dropped on Tuesday ($5000 each) included Danny Basavich, Tony Chohan, Kim Davenport, Allison Fisher, Gerda Hofstatter, Cliff Joyner, Keith McCready, Ismael (Morro) Paez, Mike Sigel, Mark Tademy (Tadd), and Mike Linda Carter Zimmerman. The 24 Wednesday losers got $10,000 each. This included Johnny Archer, Sarah Ellerby (highest woman finisher), Bobby Hunter, Ronnie O’Sullivan (a snooker champion from the UK), Paul Potier, Nick Varner, and Charlie Williams. Collecting $17,000 on Thursday night were some real heavyweights including Corey Deuel, Niels Feijen, Mika Immonen, Rafael Martinez, Rodney Morris, Shawn Putnam, Santos Mike Zimmerman Sambajon, Earl Strickland, and Nick Van den Berg. Evidently the rumors of Rafael’s death were greatly exaggerated, as he played very well in this tournament. This left 18 players in three groups of six on Friday morning. Some minor surprises were left in the field, including Quinten Hann, the “bad boy” of snooker from Australia, Evgeny Stalev from Russia, and David Matlock from the US. In all earlier rounds, three players advanced from each group, but only two were to advance from Rafael Martinez each six to Saturday. Efren Reyes went undefeated in his group. Stalev tied with Darren Appleton at 3-2 in the round, and advanced due to a slightly better win/ loss percentage. When players were tied in matches won and lost, the tie breaker was total games won divided by total games played, or the “winning percentage.” In the second group of six, Ralf Souquet advanced with a 4-1 record while Dennis Orcollo and Daryl Peach tied at 3-2 and Orcollo got the nod by fractions. Thorsten Hohmann from Germany was the leader in the third group, to be joined by Marlon Manalo who tied Marcus Chamat of Sweden on matches but had a much better winning percentage. For reference, anything over 60% of racks won in this kind of competition is very impressive. Manalo had about 62% while Chamat had only 56.4%. This set the stage for the final group of six on Saturday with three players Hours: 11:30AM-2AM

from the Philippines, two from Germany and one from Russia. The highest US finishers were Dave Matlock, Larry Nevel, and Gabe Owen, and each got $30,000 for their efforts. Again, play was in a round robin of six, with the top two finishers advancing to a single final match on Sunday. Manalo dominated in the first four rounds of the day, winning all four matches. Reyes and Stalev stumbled badly at the beginning and were unable to recover. Maybe playing for 12 hours a day for a whole week took its toll. Souquet, one of the favorites on paper, had heartbreaking 7-8 losses against both Reyes and Orcollo and a 6Marlon Manalo 8 loss to Manalo. Going into the fifth and final round of matches on Saturday, Manalo was already assured a spot on Sunday. His last match was against Thorsten Hohmann, who was second in the group at that point with a 3-1 record. If Manalo were to win their match, Hohmann might be put into a tie for second in the group, as Orcollo could move to 3-2 with a win over the struggling Stalev. The guys with the slide rules weren’t worried, however, as there was no way for Orcollo to pass Hohmann on the tie-breaking winning percentage. Manalo and Hohmann had played a match already in the round of 18 on Friday. Thorsten had dominated with five breakand-runs and an 8-3 final score. Hohmann made a more emphatic statement Saturday night by squishing Manalo 8-1 including four break-and-runs. Efren Reyes The losers on Saturday got between $40,000 for Stalev in 6th place in the round to $80,000 for Orcollo for finishing 3rd. On Sunday there was to be just a single race to 8 to determine the champion and runner up. Hohmann had to be the favorite having already beaten Manalo convincingly twice in the earlier rounds, but eight ball can be a strange game and if your break is going badly, you can expect to lose at this level of competition. Odds makers favored Hohmann at 3-2. The spectators started lining up an hour early and there was a minor stampede for seats when the gates finally opened. The TV arena had been rearranged with a single table and extra seating on one side with great views from about 450 seats. The announcer was none other than Michael Buffer, famous for his phrase, “Let’s get ready to rumble,” at boxing matches. The players entered the arena through jets of clouds, and a light show continued until they were ready to lag for the break. Hohmann won the lag but came up dry on the first break. Manalo ran out and then broke and ran another to make the score 0-2. A dry break by Manolo, and Hohmann runs that rack and breaks and runs two more to take the lead at 3-2. This was not an easy table to break on. The pockets were barely two balls wide at the points and the nappy cloth had slowed down over the week’s play and the balls just weren’t rolling the distance they had at the start of the week. In the sixth rack, Hohmann had another dry break. Manalo tried an off-angle combo and missed. Hohmann punished him with another run out. He proceeded to break three balls in and appeared to be on the way to another win, but a long shot down the side cushion Michael Buffer rattled, and Manalo was back in. He ran that rack and then broke and ran the next to tie the score at 4-4.

Manalo broke dry in the 9th game. Hohmann ran the rack, broke two balls in, and missed with three on the table. Manalo ran out and then broke and ran to take the lead at 5-6. A dry break by Manalo and Hohmann tied the match at 6-6 with another run out. Hohmann made a ball on the Fans view the match on overhead TV screens break in rack 13 but scratched. With ball-in-hand anywhere, Manalo ran out to get to the hill, 6-7. Once again, no ball on the break stopped him, and Hohmann ran the rack. At hill-hill, Hohmann broke a ball in and cooly cleared the table to take down the $350,000 first prize. Manalo had to settle for $99,000. The final match saw only one game in which either of the players got two turns at the table, and that was a game where no ball was made on the break. After the match, Hohmann admitting to being exhausted by the week of continuous play and intense pressure. He was on his way to New York City for some R&R, and then will prepare for the $3,000,000 IPT event in Reno, September 2-10. (Summary: $2,050,000 IPT North American Open 8-Ball Championship, July 22-30, 2006, Venetian in Las Vegas, 200 players including 150 tour players and 50 qualified players.)

Earl Strickland

Earl Strickland engendered controversy during his second-round, televised match with Nick Van den Berg of Holland. Strickland made several comments to Van den Berg’s family members who were in the audience, and things escalated from there. In an interview later, Van den Berg called Strickland “a disgrace to the sport,” while Strickland was unrepentant, saying, “I know I’m a terrible person, but you still have to show me some kind of respect.” IPT Tour Director Deno Andrews is investigating the situation. Behavior that is deemed unsportsmanlike conduct can result in a suspension or loss of a Tour Card.

2006 Montana’s from: Doug Asleson, Billiards Commissioner

The 2006 Montana Big Sky State Games Billiards Division continues to grow in participants as pool players around the state become more appreciative of our sport being a part of this great Olympic style event. We had our biggest number of players in both the adult and youth division. After enjoying an awesome Women’s Division 21-39 o p e n i n g (l to r) Terry Field, Ashlee Akey, Tracy Love ceremony on Friday night we started our competition early Saturday morning. As temperatures pushed over the 100-degree mark we enjoyed a pleasant day of pool in an air-conditioned Bullwackers in Billings. We had new medalists in every division and some repeat winners as well. Most importantly everyone had a great time. If you are interested in playing next year, the games will again be in Women’s Division 40+ Billings in (l to r) Val Weber, Karen Grimm, Linda Asleson mid July. Port Angeles

Vardaman, Callado Victorious Tucson, Arizona (July 10, 2006) – The best collegiate players in the nation gathered in Tucson, Arizona, with matches beginning on Friday night and ending late Sunday afternoon. This program succeeded the junior divisions of the BCA-ACUI Junior & Collegiate National 9-Ball Championships. The junior tournaments ran from July 5 through 8, and featured almost 100 of the nation’s best 19 & Under sharks in four different divisions (by age and gender). This is the second consecutive year that ACUI has partnered with BCA to present a joint program. ACUI has hosted a national Eleanor and Emilyn Callado collegiate billiards playoff nearly every year since the 1930s, while the BCA juniors program has existed for nearly two decades. Lars Vardaman of Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville took home the ACUI Men’s title for a third year in a row. Only one player in ACUI history has ever achieved this feat: Leroy Kinman of Eastern Kentucky State University (1949-1951). In the Women’s division, familiar names rose to the top as well, with twin sisters Eleanor and Emilyn Callado of San Francisco State University facing each other in the finals. Despite Emilyn’s newfound zone, a twoset finals match for the twins was not meant to be, as the elder Callado— born 2 minutes earlier—dashed her younger sister’s hopes of a championship with a decisive 7-2 victory. The site for the 2007 ACUI 9-ball Championship is not yet finalized. If you would like more information about how to compete in or host this event, contact Betsy Sundholm at sundholm@umich.edu or visit the Recreation page of the ACUI website, www.acui.org

The Chalkys are hand made from genuine skins (snakeskin, emu, ostrich, frog, lizard, stringray, crocodile and alligator) with either bone (real hair pipe, buffalo horn, elk or antler horn) or wood (found in your cue sticks and exotic woods from around the world). You can find Ken and Anna in their booth at the APA Nationals (Pool Emporium) at the Riviera in Las Vegas, August 18-26, 2006. You can also see their Chalkys online at: www.chalkysbyken.com. Prices range from $14 to $26. Each Chalky comes with a lifetime guarantee on the workmanship of the cup. If the lacing comes apart or the chalky stretches so that your chalk won’t stay in, you can send it back for replacement or repair free of charge. Where else can you get a deal like that! Four types of Chalkys: Retractable clip has a circular holder with nylon or steel cable attached to cup. Clip - the cup is attached to a phone clip for easy access from your belt or pocket. Bone - attached to cup, slides in pocket. Wood - is attached to cup, slides in pocket. Add a little style in your cue case! See ad page 23

John Schmidt emailed us and asked if I would review his new DVD on straight pool. I called him back and John said that he used to live in California and read “The Break” all the time. He is now living in Florida and decided to do a homemade DVD in his friend’s garage.

Sam wins at sam’s From: Bill Bradford

Sam Rabito beat Justin Lilje for 1st place in the monthly Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s Billiards on July 2, 2006. Justin was off his game today after the first couple of matches, struggling through two sub-par games in the finals. Chris Nall lost to Justin by 2 points, but certainly had plenty of opportunities to put it away. Chris beat Scott Robinson of Goldendale, Washington, to take 3rd place. The World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA), the world governing body for pool, is convening a WPA Rules/Referees Congress to review and update the world-standardized rules for the sport and to establish a WPA international referees program. The Congress will take place in Chicago, Illinois, September 21-23, 2006, and fourteen delegates from each of the six member continents to the WPA – Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America – are being invited. Notable directors from the WPA present will include WPA Sports Director Thomas Overbeck (Germany) and WPA Rules Committee chairman John Lewis (USA). The four delegates representing North America will include Robert Jewett (USA) who has organized the new rules documentation to be reviewed;

Dale Brimicombe (Canada) representing the Canadian Billiard and Snooker Association; Cecil Messer (USA) representing the American CueSports Alliance; and Bill Stock (USA) representing the BCA Pool League. The primary goals of the Congress will be 1). to finalize the new version of the world-standardized rules for pool to go into effect January 1, 2008; and 2). to determine the structure of a WPA referees program through which current and new referees certified within the programs of various national pool federations may be accredited on a standard international level. Results from the Congress will be announced once any proposals on rules updates and an international referee program are approved at the next WPA Annual General Meeting scheduled to be conducted in the latter half of 2007.

The last table this month was for Rich Martin in West Linn Oregon. It’s fun when someone gives you cart blanch to do your best. Rich has a 4 1/2 x 9 Gold crown II made with all the new tricks except the stainless castings so we had to fill the cut outs for the bolt holes changed the 35 YEAR OLD RUBBER BECAUSE IT WAS playing short and blipped where the rail bolt cut outs were, rebuilt and polished the score markers, recovered the rails and table with Simonis HR. The table played so good that I had to try it even though my bridge hand has third degree burns from a magic trick gone wrong. So many people read my stuff on the net but the pool players in Portland can’t read so I don’t get a chance to try out what I preach. Most of my good work goes far away. I have noticed that many of the supplier have mended their ways and the rubber is getting better. It is so easy to check the cushions you are getting. Just check the specific gravity and more than 1.09 is going to cause trouble. If you need to know how, just contact me at 503-313-8646 or mrpoollsr@aol.com.
