a community is born

Between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, on a barrier island just north of the small, laid-back Florida town of Vero Beach, lays one of the most enviable places to live and play on the eastern seaboard. From the beginning, John’s Island was envisioned as a very private, family-oriented club community that took full advantage of its barrier island location. The community’s plans laid out by the legendary developer, E. Llwyd Ecclestone, Sr., called for strategically placed homes in the shadow of majestic live oaks and careful preservation of the pristine natural environment.

Since its inception in 1969, John’s Island has grown and evolved. It has seen both the original golf and beach clubhouses replaced and first class recreational facilities added. But one thing has remained constant since Ecclestone’s heirs sold the Club to its members in 1986. John’s Island remains one of the only private clubs in the nation with vertical membership, allowing three, even four generations of a family to fully utilize everything the Club has to offer under one membership.

Where the tropics begin That’s how Vero Beach has described itself since the 1920s. The area lies in a unique transitional climate zone. Visitors are often startled to see live oaks dripping with Spanish moss next to towering palm trees.

Local vegetation is as lush and exotic as anything you’d see in the Far East.

Much of the area’s biodiversity can be attributed to the Indian River Lagoon, North America’s most diverse estuary with thousands of different species of animals, fish, and plants. The Lagoon also has one of the most diverse bird populations anywhere in America.

Gentle manatees live or migrate through the Lagoon seasonally. And the law protects sea turtle nesting areas on local beaches.

Florida. For the birds President Theodore Roosevelt designated Pelican Island, in the middle of the Indian River Lagoon, the country’s first wildlife refuge in 1903.

To say that John’s Island Club members relish life would be an understatement.

With so many activities — social, recreational and cultural — available, no one here sits on the sidelines. There’s so much to do whether it’s organizing a golf tournament, exploring a new cuisine, attending an enriching lecture, or doing good works in the community through the John’s Island Foundation or the John’s Island Community Service League.

But more than anything else, club life is dominated by friends and family, often several generations of the later.

And that’s what memories are made of.

WHen Citrus was king

Indian River County and Vero Beach owe their development to the citrus industry, which began in earnest when Henry Flagler’s East Coast Railway reached the area in 1893, allowing quick transport of fruit to Jacksonville and on to rest of the country. The Indian River name became synonymous with the sweetest tasting citrus. Wealthy grove owners were prominent members of the community and contributed to its institutions and infrastructure. Citrus has left an indelible mark on the area.

1925 The state legislature in Tallahassee approves the creation of the new county of Indian River, formed from part of St. Lucie County.

What began as a naval air station during WWII has proven pivotal through the years. Servicemen who were stationed here during the war returned, fueling a population boom in the 50s. And in 1957, Piper Aircraft moved the production of its Cherokee aircraft here from Pennsylvania. Piper remains in Vero Beach, where it shares the runway with a flight school and private aviation, a real convenience for John’s Island residents who own private planes.

In 1949, the Brooklyn Dodgers established a spring training camp known as Dodgertown adjacent to the former naval air station where they remained for 60 years. Today, high school and college baseball teams use the facilities. .

McKee Botanical Garden:

It’s a jungle out there In 1929, local businessmen Arthur McKee and Waldo Sexton, with the help of prominent landscape architect William Lyman, opened what was called McKee Jungle Garden, a celebration of lush tropical vegetation. By the 1940s, it was one of the most popular tourist attractions in Florida.

By the 1970s, theme parks pulled visitors away and the gardens were closed in 1976.

Years later the Indian River Land Trust raised $9 million and redeveloped and reopened the property in 2001.
