Why do we love racing? It’s expensive, painful and exhausting, but something motivates us to plan our race calendar each year, sign up for a few events and spend months training, excitedly anticipating race day. For me, be it a 5K or full marathon, crossing the finish line is a glorious rush that is rarely found in everyday life. I love the thrill of racing; challenging myself to accomplish goals that once seemed impossible, all while getting stronger with each training session. (Even if that strength comes in the form of sore, tired muscles.) Why do you race? Send us an email with your reasons to editor@sportsguidemag.com or post a message on Outdoor Sports Guide Magazine’s Facebook page and you’ll be entered to WIN a TMAT Pro Triathlon Transition Mat! This mat helps you transition quickly and is available in bright colors and patterns so you can easily spot your gear in the crowded transition area. The neoprene fabric makes drying your feet a breeze, and it rolls up smaller than a foot-long sub. Learn more at tmatpro.com. Deadline for entry is August 31, 2011. But that’s not all we’re giving away in our annual Keeper issue! Check out our Facebook Fan Giveaway for a chance to score some tasty grub. The Keeper also has great racecentric stories on recovering from a marathon (pg. 22), unique local races (pg. 8), a first-time triathlete’s experience (pg. 18) and Utah’s most comprehensive event calendar (pg. 27). I hope this calendar inspires you to try a new event this season. I’ll be competing in my first triathlon and am excited—and nervous—for this new experience! For whatever races fill your calendar this year, I wish you a season without stumbles, flat tires, stomach cramps or that dreaded horse named Charley.

SANTA 5K RUNS
Let’s face it, some things are simply better left in the dark. Questionable Thai food, the cleanliness of your floorboards, night-crawler catching, any reference to your crazy college days, the in-laws and running long distances during the month of August in an arid desert climate. The race begins when you say it does, generally around 9 or 10:00 p.m. and the goal is to finish AT midnight. Not to slow, not too fast and no timing devices are allowed. (An un-timed race? So right up my alley.) Part of your race packet includes glow necklaces, but additional lighting devices are encouraged. For my benefit, creativity with lighting devices is encouraged.
When the cold is something tangible that hunts you and your lungs in the most bitter of winter weather, or it feels like precious little could drag you from your couch or comfy indoor training sessions, a veritable flock of multi-sized Santas running down the street might be the one thing that does the trick. A short and sweet 5K race where the registration fee gets you a Santa hat, beard, jacket, pants and belt. Guaranteed to be the only race where elves hand out milk and cookies to spur you and your fellow Clauses on to victory.

THE DIRTY DASH
WARRIOR DASH
If you’ve ever had a random dream where large men in pink tutus muddied it up with line after line of Tom Cruises circa “Risky Business” all mucked up in a race against time, then this 5 or 10K is for you! Costuming is everything in life, but never more true than in this muddy obstacle course race. The bizarre meets the best Dreamworks could conjure in this local fling that is the most filthy few hours you can legally spend in state. Run it solo, or with a team of 5–20 of your muddiest buddies. They also offer a “Piglet Plunge” for children at each race. My son is thrilled with this chance to become as filthy as possible with perfect impunity. Worth every penny of the five buck registration fee.
Ok...this one isn’t exactly nearby. But who doesn’t like a small road trip to someplace warm and sunny with pristine air? Or barring that, the perfection-like Rockies? A quick getaway due East will find you in beautiful Colorado. Time it right and men and women in tights, capes and Gothic warrior dress competing, nay vying, to be the best in the land will assault all your senses. (You had me at warrior…sign me up.) A co-ed cacophony of superheroes gone terribly, terribly filthy and in bad need of a Tide fix. If you consider the Rockies your own personal backyard, this race belongs to you. Still photos do not quite capture the careening, slow-motion messiness of athletic fabulousness that awaits you. Check their website for videos, and you can’t help but sign up.

t's a tough world out there for a runner's feet. Slamming against the ground dozens of times a minute, flying over all kinds of obstacles, chafing and swelling from constant abuse. No wonder most running shoes offer serious structure and cushioning to protect feet from all these possible traumas. With so many shoe choices available, featuring everything from motion control to enhanced stability, barefoot or “minimalist” running may seem counterproductive: Who would give up the protection of a good pair of running shoes? Yet in the last few years, more and more runners have given up their traditional running shoes in favor of new “minimalist” models... or no shoes at all. Minimalists claim that barefoot or lightly shod running can help prevent common running injuries, build overall strength and even cut seconds or minutes off your running time. Barefoot running is nothing new. The Tarahumara people of northern Mexico, whose name for themselves means “fastrunning people,” regularly run more than a hundred miles a day with no foot protection at all. And famously shoeless Olympians such as Abebe Bikila and Zola Budd introduced this practice to mainstream sports decades ago. “If we were made to run,” minimalist runner and distanceminimally.com blogger Leif Rustvold says, “we weren’t made to do it in running shoes.” With the popularity of books such as Christopher McDougall’s Born to Run, and with many shoe manufacturers now offering lightweight, low-profile “minimalist” shoes, you may be wondering if you should give barefoot running a try for yourself. Here’s what you need to know before you unlace those shoes and hit the trail. Know before you go. Barefoot and minimalist runners agree with podiatrists and other sports professionals: It’s important to understand the rationale behind minimalist running before attempting it yourself. Though barefoot running may seem like a natural, simple act, it takes time to unlearn old running habits and adjust to your new stride.
12
“It’s important to have a supportive community, no matter what kind of runner you are,” says Rustvold. Whether you connect in person or online, Rustvold recommends reaching out to “people who can answer your questions and share experiences.” Check out the Resources sidebar for some information sources to try. Start slow. If you’ve regularly been logging 30 miles a week, all you should have to do is take off your shoes and head out the door, right? Not so fast! “Up to 40% of minimalist runners experience pain, and in many cases suffer more injuries than traditional shoe wearers,” warns Dr. Terry Smith, DPM. He sees hundreds of runners each year at the Advanced Ankle and Foot Center in Salt Lake City, many of whom are overenthusiastic new converts to minimalist running. Barefoot runners are especially likely to suffer Achilles tendon injuries, Smith says, “but most eventually adapt to their new running style.” Slow and steady is the best way to approach your minimalist training program. Take a tip from minimalist runner Ute Mitchell: “When I first got my Vibram FiveFingers, I ran for just five minutes at a time, then walked the rest of my route. After a week or so, I built up to 10 minutes of running; then, eventually, to 20,” Her gradual training pace has helped her recover from a knee injury she feared would end her running days. “Now, when I run in my ‘barefoot shoes,’ it’s like I’m flying—like I’m levitating over the ground.” Build strength, then speed. In addition to trail time in your new minimalist shoes, you’ll want to log some gym time as well. Sean Sullivan, founder of Somnio Shoes, suggests putting yourself into “pre-hab” to get ready for the transition to minimalist running: “By preparing your body with a program of active stretching and strengthening, you can dramatically reduce your chances of injury.” With every pair of its Nada shoes, Somnio includes a training DVD designed to help runners make a successful transition to a minimalist running style.

N AT U R A L B O R N R U N N E R S IS RUNNING WITHOUT RUNNING SHOES FOR YOU? WE GIVE YOU THE FACTS.
Minimalist runner Barbara Hammond knows the importance of gradual strength building: “I started by running barefoot on a treadmill. I was recovering from tendonitis after running a marathon in cushioned shoes, and I knew I needed to build up my strength before doing any serious races.” When she first slipped into her new pair of Mizuno Wave Ronin 3s, she says, “I thought I was in heaven!” Her slow and steady training program has had serious speed benefits, too: She’s shaved two minutes off her per-mile distance running time. Add to your training toolbox. Not ready to abandon your beloved running shoes just yet? For most runners, minimalist running is a part of their training— not an everyday choice. “Running in minimalist shoes once or twice a week is an excellent way to approach part of your training,” Dr. Smith says. “It alters your cadence dramatically, forces you to take shorter steps, and works your muscles differently. It’s similar to introducing intervals or cross-training into your workout.” Whether you’re a neighborhood jogger, a weekend 10K runner or a dedicated ultra-marathoner, minimalist running can revitalize your routine, challenge your body and inspire you to reconnect with your sport. Armed with these safety tips and resources, you’re ready to step out of your cushioned shoes and into a new way of running. RESOURCES ● RunBare, runbare.com Articles, videos and more give you all the information you need to start running or walking barefoot. ● Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall. Recycled materials mean it’s earth-friendly, too! $175, newtonrunning.com Our tester says: Not only are these shoes nice to look at, they’re also comfortable to run in! Vibram FiveFingers Bikila LS Perhaps the most readily identifiable minimalist running shoe, Vibram FiveFingers have been responsible for many athletes’ conversion to this running style. Now, runners with wider feet or higher insteps can enjoy a more customized, comfortable fit, thanks to the Bikila LS’ speed lace panel. $100, vibramfivefingers.com Our tester says: “The laces keep your foot secure so you don’t slide around inside the shoe. A FORAY INTO MULTI-DISCIPLINE S RACING
T
By Sean Zimmerman-Wall
he pain starts in my lower right abdomen and slowly proceeds into my right arm; eventually my entire torso is on fire. My body screams at me to pull my cap off and signal for help. For some reason, I keep swimming. Perhaps a signal from deep within my cortex pushes me further, the pain lessens and the shore comes closer with each flailing stroke. Nearly 30 minutes after entering the water, I drag my oxygen-deprived body onto the ramp and stagger towards my bicycle. I contemplate my decision to take on this challenge and question my sanity as I strap on my helmet and begin the uphill climb that awaits me. Flash back three months; I’m at a party. As I casually sip my beverage, my friend Cindy says she is doing a sprint triathlon and that I should join her. In my inebriated state I agree and then return to the night’s festivities. About a week later, Cindy calls me to ask what time I want to meet at the pool. “I thought you were joking,” I reply. Sure enough, she was serious, so I grab my shorts and head to the rec center. Coming from a running background, swimming has never been very interesting, and I only use my skills when accompanied by the possibility of certain death. Cindy, however, swam at the collegiate level and has been in the pool since she was a child. With this in mind, she took it easy on me in the water, and I showed her a thing or two about land training. By the end of the day, we’d hashed out a game plan and embarked on a physical and mental journey that neither of us could have imagined. Our initial plan was to start training by spending two nights a week swimming, biking and running together. Having someone to keep you honest about your training schedule is extremely helpful and seeing each other progress can be motivational. Cindy had her heart set on competing in the Park City Triathlon, which was in its inaugural year in 2010. Deciding that the sprint distance (750M swim, 13.5-mile bike and 5K run) would be enough of a challenge, we set feasible preliminary training goals and worked toward the target distances in each discipline. This being the first time either of us had competed in a triathlon, we searched the Internet and found information on creating a regimen that built upon itself over the course of 10 weeks. Beginnertriathlete.com offered insightful tips on developing realistic goals and even provided weekly workouts that would break in our bodies for the rigors of such an event. The website also offered ideas for maintaining a proper diet to maximize caloric intake and build fast, lean muscles. Although, beer wasn’t on the menu, we decided that the extra carbs couldn’t hurt. Since swimming was the first event, and my weakest link, I decided to focus my attention on developing consistent stroke and breathing techniques that I could fall back on once the race started. The Steiner Aquatic Center at the University of Utah provided an excellent venue for skill building, and the outdoor 50-meter lap pool whipped me into shape in no time. I’ll admit that it was a bit intimidating seeing all the hard-core swimmers in their sleek suits sprinting up and down the lanes,
18
but they all had welcoming attitudes that made it fun. At first I had trouble completing two laps (200M) without stopping, but within a month, I was up to eight. After an hour of pool training, we hopped on our bikes for a few laps around campus. Being an adrenaline junkie, the only bike I had was my mountain bike, which weighed about 35 pounds and had only eight gears, six of which actually worked. Although heavy and a bit clunky, I felt that if I could pedal up 400 South on that behemoth, I could certainly ride a lightweight road bike just about anywhere. We finished each day of training by running two miles at a moderate pace, simply enjoying the sunset over downtown Salt Lake City. Over the next six weeks, we tried to keep our sessions together, but due to our hectic schedules, we often trained alone. I kept swimming laps and even managed to get in a few open water swims. A word of advice to anyone wishing to compete in a triathlon, most swims are open water, which is far different from the calm, controlled environment of your local pool. Wind and waves play havoc on your breathing patterns, and being away from the shore can be a bit unnerving. Not to mention the temperature difference. The water temperature in Jordanelle on race day was a chilling 69 degrees. Next time I’ll wear a wetsuit! In the two weeks leading up to the event, I was consistently swimming 2000M a week, biking 30 miles and running 15 miles. This may seem like a lot for someone just getting started, but if you wish to be competitive, this is about average. Finally, the day of the race arrived. We ditched our overweight cycles and rented slick tri-bikes from a local shop. I recommend practicing on a rental a few days before so you can get acquainted with the body position and shifting techniques that will make you a more efficient competitor. Renting a wetsuit is also smart since it keeps you warm and gives you added buoyancy. Together, a few days rental on these items will run you about a hundred bucks, but it’s well worth the investment if you want to compete at your highest level. Hours before the race I felt as nervous as ever, and I couldn’t shake the images from my previous night’s dreams of alligator-sharks attacking me from below. Bang! The gun went off and there was no turning back. Despite my horrendous time in the water, I managed to make up nearly all the deficit on the bike and then capped it off with a respectable run. When the smoke cleared, Cindy and I had finished first in our respective age groups. The entire journey had started off as joke, and in the end we surprised our supporters and ourselves. I encourage anyone who enjoys the outdoors, and a bit of punishment, to enter a sprint triathlon this summer or fall. Even if you don’t win, you will know how far you can really push yourself and that feeling can last a lifetime. Sean understands the value of a cold beer after an epic day of adventuring, as well as good friends to share in the experience. When not ski patrolling at the Bird, you can find him on the golf course enjoying a game with his grandfather.

Ponying Up By Melissa McGibbon ltra marathon runner Karl Meltzer is known as “The Speedgoat.” He started running competitively when he was eight. In 1989, Meltzer moved to Utah from New Hampshire to ski at Snowbird and Alta for the season. But like most folks who think they are just “passing through,” he couldn’t convince himself to depart the Rockies after the snow melted. He bought a mountain bike and embarked on a discovery of the Wasatch terrain. But didn’t take long for Meltzer to ditch the bike and start trail running. He never looked back.
U
To commemorate the 150 th anniversary of the Pony Express, Meltzer ran the entire 2,064-mile trail from Sacramento, California to St. Joseph, Missouri in 40 days. The Pony Express served as the premier mail service from east to west for 18 months in the 1860s and became the West’s best form of communication prior to the telegraph. Meltzer handdelivered a letter from the Mayor of Sacramento to the Deputy Mayor of St. Joseph upon his arrival and was rewarded with an official Karl Meltzer Recognition Day on October 25. OSG: What’s next on your list? KM: This year I’m racing in eight 100-milers. I just ran the Rocky Raccoon with a time of 14:27 a few weeks ago. I came in fourth and was psyched about finishing that fast. I’ve got two races coming up soon, the Coyote Two Moon and the Antelope Island Buffalo Run. It’s pretty unheard of for someone to win two races that close together, but that’s my goal. I’m not going to say it’s not hard, but a hundred miles isn’t that far. I know it sounds weird. My mentality changed after running the Appalachian Trail and the Pony Express Trail. After running 50 miles a day for 40 days, a hundred miles doesn’t seem so bad. It’s a full day of running, but then I’m done. OSG: How do you keep your energy up during the races? KM: I drink about a half a can of Red Bull at the aid stations, maybe six times during a 100-mile race. I also use EFS gels, recovery drinks and I eat chicken bouillon cubes. OSG: What is a casual day of running for you? KM: About 10 trail miles every day. If I get to run every day then I’m happy. I wake up and think, what peak am I going to hit today? After that, the rest of the day doesn’t matter. OSG: What kind of shoes and socks do you wear? KM: Hoka Mafate Shoes and Drymax socks. I train in the Hoka Mafates and race in the Hoka Bondis because they are slightly
20
lighter. The Drymax socks are awesome; I never get blisters and I never have foot issues. OSG: What music do you listen to while you run? KM: I listen to mostly Jam Band stuff. I listen to the same music every race and then I can pace myself to it. It’s kind of cool to know what mile I’m at by what song is playing. I like to use Sennheiser headphones; they’re the best ones I’ve tried. Meltzer’s Playlist: Escalator by Strangefolk Diner by Widespread Panic Eyes of the World by the Grateful Dead
So Well by Strangefolk Ecstasy by Rusted Root
OSG: Any advice for aspiring runners? KM: Obviously you have to work hard and train, but the biggest factor is how much fun are you having? It’s all about how you are feeling and how you feed yourself. Some folks get to mile 40 and you’ll see them carrying the couch because they don’t have good strategy. After I’ve hit mile 70, I know it’s in the bag. You gotta be fast at the aid stations, too. Keep it simple. By The Numbers Total miles run: 2,064 Total calories burned: approx. 247,000 (equal to 281 pounds of food or 532 Big Macs) Pairs of shoes worn: 7 Gallons of water consumed: 60 Cans of Red Bull consumed: 143 Pounds of bacon consumed: 14 Hours of music listened to: 440 Pounds Karl lost on his first day of running: 8 Highest temperature: 98°F Lowest temperature: 30°F Highest elevation: 11,138 ft. Lowest elevation: 1,286 ft. Total elevation ascended: 91,068 ft. Total elevation descended: 98,567 ft. Number of wrong turns: too many to count!
Melissa’s girlie exterior may belie her gritty behavior, but she isn’t afraid of a little suffering and is always in search of adventure. Globetrotting is part of her soul—skiing, climbing, biking, wakeboarding and practicing yoga are a few of her favorite things.

RECOVERING
FROM A MARATHON
By Roy Stevenson
Y
our body is a war zone after a marathon. Research shows that up to 25% of marathon finishers get sick within a few weeks of completing a marathon. So your goal is to get back in good health, and then resume your training schedule so you’ll be ready to race again in a month or two. Unfortunately, recovering from a marathon has a lot of dogma and myths attached to it. David Costill, Ph.D., former head of the exercise physiology department at Ball State University, Indiana, says, “A lot of things happen to the body as a result of running the marathon. You become overheated, dehydrated and muscle depleted. Your hormonal milieu gets thrown out of whack, and you traumatize your muscles.” He adds, “You have to bide your time to get your body back in balance.” Other research on the effects of running a marathon from muscle biopsies consistently show ruptured fibers, inflammation within the muscle and spillage of intracellular contents outside the muscle. The list goes on: broken blood cells, torn muscle fibers and damage to ligaments and tendons. It can take your muscles and skeletal system from 7–10 days, or longer, to recover. Some biopsy research shows lingering muscle fiber damage 30 days after a marathon. Here’s some advice on recovering properly. IMMEDIATE POST-MARATHON RECOVERY Keep moving, gradually slowing down to a walk, to allow your stressed system to attain a steady state and normalize. Stopping suddenly can cause lightheadedness, dizziness and possibly fainting, if your blood pressure drops too rapidly. Your cool down should ease you back to resting state gently to begin the repair process. GET YOUR FEET UP Much of the soreness after a marathon is due to swelling from fluids that have accumulated between the muscles, causing pressure on nerve endings near the skin. Dr. Costill recommends elevating your legs to help ease the pain. TO MASSAGE OR NOT TO MASSAGE? A gentle massage might help. Not the usual deep friction and pressure point work you normally have to keep your legs healthy, but a light stroking of the surface in the direction of the heart. However, even a light massage may be too painful immediately following a race. A better time is 24–72 hours later.
22
ICING Icing can be done every few hours after a marathon to good effect—it reduces pain because the cold deadens the nerve pain endings. An added benefit is that for awhile (about 10 minutes) it slows down the blood flow to the traumatized muscles. Continuing to ice longer than this dilates the arteries, increasing blood flow to the legs. This pumps out waste products and brings in nutrients and proteins to begin repair work. A cool shower may be helpful, or running cold tap water over your legs can be very refreshing. But no matter how relaxing it seems, avoid hot tub parties after the marathon unless you want the post-race soreness to get worse. Heating adds to the micro trauma, contributing to swelling and inflammation. GET SOME REST Go home and take a nap, or at least lie down for an hour. NUTRITION Research shows that glycogen in your muscle cells is severely depleted after a race, and complete repletion of glycogen stores requires a high-carb diet for at least 46 hours, and is most rapid during the first 10 hours of recovery. Edward Coyle, Ph.D., exercise physiologist at the University of Texas, Austin, says the more glycogen you can get into your system within the first two hours of stopping are the most crucial, “The muscles absorb glycogen like a sponge,” he says, but, “four to six hours after the race the absorption rate starts to decline.” You need to carb-load again after the race. Having participated in several marathons, and witnessed the shark-like feeding frenzy of marathon finishers, it’s clear that runners are ready almost immediately for solid foods. These should include fruit, such as bananas, to replace potassium. Choose fruits that contain iron, zinc, calcium, chromium, sodium and magnesium. Nancy Clark, R.D., one of the foremost sports nutritionists in the country, recommends fruit or yogurt as superior to candy bars or cookies. But Costill says it’s ok to eat cookies and candy because the body doesn’t care where it gets the carbs from at this stage. Four hours after the race you should be recovered enough to eat a full mixed meal, including some protein along with the usual carbs. It’s reported Continued on page 24

that marathoners have a craving for high-protein foods after the event. For several days after the race your overall carb intake should be 65% or more of your total calories. REHYDRATION Drink plenty of fruit juice, electrolyte- and mineral-replacement drinks, which are better than soft drinks because you’ll get vitamins and minerals, versus sugar and caffeine from soft drinks. And don’t forget water. Start drinking fluids immediately, but avoid alcohol because it’s a diuretic. You’ll know you’re rehydrating adequately when you start urinating again, which can be several hours after the event. ASPIRIN, PAINKILLERS, ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES? Your quadriceps will be very sore, especially when going down stairs or a slope. Sports medicine physicians recommend avoiding painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs because muscle tissue repair actually takes longer when you take them. STRETCHING? There’s no evidence to show that stretching reduces postexercise soreness after marathons. Sharp stretching is counterproductive, flaring up inflammation of the muscle tissues; slow, gentle stretching within your range may help temporarily reduce stiffness. POST-RACE RUNNING/TRAINING Studies have yet to show that post-race running benefits the recovery of the marathoner. Drs. Dave Costill and Frederick Hagerman looked at 10 male marathon runners. One group of marathoners, did short easy 20–45 minute treadmill running for five days post marathon (exercise-recovery group), while a second group rested completely for five days (rest-recovery group). Both groups had identical glycogen restoration, suggesting that light exercise does not facilitate glycogen repletion. Indeed, the rest-recovery group had a greater recovery of leg extension strength and work capacity than the exerciserecovery group. These findings and many other studies since, raise doubts about the value of exercise during the days following an exhaustive event such as a marathon. Take a week off running—you’ve earned it! After that, workouts should be kept short and easy on a flat, soft grass surface until you’re not sore anymore—somewhere from 12–21 days after the marathon. An alternative is to do nonimpact activities such as swimming, pool running or cycling on a stationary exercise bike, giving your legs a chance to recover. Weight training exercises for the legs should be avoided.

WHEN CAN YOU RACE AGAIN? As a general guideline, waiting two months before your next marathon or race is recommended. Whenever you have regained your normal training “feel,” be warned—there may be a false recovery for a week or so, when you feel fine, but racing during this phase may put you back in limping mode—wait a week or two longer until you’re completely recovered. Be aware of the severe damage you’ve done to your body and when in doubt, it’s wiser to take it easy than push yourself. Roy Stevenson has a master’s degree in coaching and exercise physiology from Ohio University. He’s had over 200 articles on running, fitness and health published in various regional, national and international magazines and newspapers in the U.S.A., Scotland, England, and Australia. Formerly from New Zealand, Roy competed in NZ Championships on track, road and cross-country.

ou just ran 26.2 miles. You’re elated and exhausted, accomplished and defeated. The thought of having to make decisions seems overwhelming, and with good reason, glucose—the fuel your brain needs to do its job—is probably depleted or quickly on its way there. Instead of feeling powerless after a race, go into the marathon with a plan for your recovery nutrition, and save yourself from the deliberation process. Often runners know exactly what they’ll eat before the big race, but they tend to neglect their recovery nutrition, assuming the race is over and the hard work is done. Yet this post-race period is when the body begins working overtime. What and when you eat after this grueling workout determines how you’ll feel the next few days. Nutrition gives your body the building blocks it needs to return to homeostasis. There are three main nutrients to focus on: carbohydrates, protein and fluids. One way to get these nutrients is by following the 3-in-4 Rule: three feedings within four hours. Right after the marathon, within 30–45 minutes, eat 45–65 grams of carbs and 10–20 grams of protein. Try a Clif Bar and yogurt, 12 ounces of low fat chocolate milk and a banana or a peanut butter and honey sandwich on whole-grain bread with a glass of milk. If your biggest challenge a race is lack of hunger, drink a nutrientrich smoothie instead. Your second feeding should be about two hours after the race, and is typically a full meal. It should be mostly carbohydrates (about 50–60%) in the form of whole grains, dairy products and fruits and vegetables, plus 10–20 grams of protein. If you’re on the go, stop by a sandwich shop and get a turkey sub on whole-grain bread with a piece of fruit. Or eat a pasta dish with some grilled chicken and a side salad. Craving Mexican food? Try a burrito with black beans on a whole-wheat tortilla. Remember to keep drinking water or an electrolyte-enhanced sports drink. Finally, two hours after your meal, complete the recovery process with another carbohydrate and protein snack. Greek yogurt and mixed berries is a healthy choice, or try some graham crackers and peanut butter, even a bowl of cereal with milk works. It can take days for the recovery process to be complete, so keep focusing on those three main nutrients: carbohydrates, protein and fluids. Most importantly, listen to your body! Rest assured though, if you show up on race day with your recovery nutrition planned out, you’ll have a much happier and quicker post-race recovery period.

last word DOES IT WORK? iBike Dash Cycling Computer By Rachael Hodson It’s hard to sort through the never-ending technological options that greet us in every magazine, with every click of a mouse and in the onslaught of media which fuels our need for more, more, more. Athletes and outdoor enthusiasts, however, get their fuel and adrenaline from the rush of sport and the world that greets them beyond their computer screens. But, sometimes, these two worlds collide in what just might be a perfect match. Many of us carry an iPhone whether we are in our offices or racing Lotoja. No matter what we say, our phones are a device we cannot live without. Why not turn what we already have into a useful tool that can propel our ability and knowledge of biking to the next level? The iBike is just the gadget for those who love to race, road bike and hit the dirt trails! At first glance the iBike case is a little larger than you might expect, a miniature brick. However, once it’s mounted on your bike, it’s hardly noticeable and looks no different from any other bike computer out there...except this one is holding your iPhone! The weather-sealed case protects your phone in storms and absorbs shock while it collects data. The capabilities of the iBike can be overwhelming, but as you get the hang of it, you’ll be amazed at the abounding features this little gadget offers. It can do all the usuals; heart rate, cadence, speed, mileage and power. But, the iBike continues to impress
as it shows a real-time GPS display of where you are. The best part is it uses a platform we are all familiar with, Google Maps, giving you a very comfortable and easy-to-read system. The iBike, with an iPhone or iPod Touch, will even provide wind speed and direction so you can always have a tail wind. Another benefit of the iBike is the multiple bike profiles you can easily switch back and forth from. It has mountain bike, track bike, road bike, time trial bike, as well as custom profiles. This means if you ride on more than one type of terrain you can easily switch from one to another. The iBike software comes with the device, but is also available to conveniently download to your computer. It allows you to easily track your rides, keep history of your workouts and even analyze your ride by how much elevation gain or loss you achieved. iBike also offers different cycling computers at every price range from $199–$749. $329 ibikesports.com
WHAT’S HOT Recovery Shoes By Jenny Willden Be it running, biking or hiking, any leg-dominant activity can wreak havoc on your lower body, leaving you with tight, overworked leg and foot muscles. Recovery shoes, while not an entirely new concept in footwear, are currently coming to market to help reduce this post-exercise leg and foot pain. I still remember my first recovery shoes, a circa 1995 pair of Adidas flip flops that featured massaging nubs to soothe tired feet after soccer. Unfortunately, the nubs were more painful than beneficial if worn any longer than ten minutes. But those flip flops are a far cry from the recovery footwear of today. Enter Salomon’s RX Recovery Shoes. Made to slip on before or after sports, these lightweight, breathable shoes feature a shock-absorbing, wedge-shaped heel designed to reduce stress on your legs and allow muscles to relax. After racing or working out, your overheated feet don’t smell like a flowerpatch, and the mesh upper and antimicrobial treatment on the RX’s help your toes breathe, without alienating everyone in a ten-foot radius. Plus, the cushioned footbed molds to the
50
shape of your foot over time, making the shoes fit better with every wear. They’re available in flip flop, moccasin and slide styles, but I recommend the slides because they’re effortless to get on and off. (A plus when you’re so sore that bending over seems impossible.) The RX’s run a bit on the pricey side, but deals abound when purchased online. For more information on running recovery, read “Recovering from a Marathon” on page alomon.com 22. $55 salomon.com
