Sacred ground

T

he return of Formula One cars to the Nurburgring this weekend will no doubt be a special sight for a multitude of Australian race fans.

While, to use one of Mark Webber’s favourite phrases, a lot of water has passed under the bridge since July 12, 2009, memories of that day’s German Grand Prix still burn brightly. Webber’s reaction to his first Grand Prix victory was as memorable as it was emotional. Having scrounged his way through the British single-seater scene, survived two horrendous crashes at Le Mans, and suffered a multitude of disappointments since joining Formula One, Webber’s first Grand Prix victory celebration was always going to be something special. As the Nurburgring’s race-sharing agreement with the Hockenheimring ensures that the 5.15km layout in the shadows of the ‘Green Hell’ is now only seen every two years, we head into the 2011 German Grand Prix hoping Webber can revive some of that maiden win magic. The 166-race-veteran beat team-mate Sebastian Vettel to pole position for the second time this season last time out at Silverstone, but again it was the German who came out ahead in the race. With Vettel having already taken the Australian and Monaco races on his way to a seemingly inevitable championship crown, this weekend may mark Webber’s last chance to steal a significant trophy away from his team-mate. As the relaxed regulations regarding off-throttle blowing of diffusers look likely to boost Red Bull out of reach of its McLaren and Ferrari rivals, the 2011 German Grand Prix is set to be one heck of a grudge match.

COVER STORY

Caution to the Wind Fernando Alonso is prepared to take bigger risks from here on in to add to his 2011 win tally

F

ernando Alonso says he will throw caution to the wind in order to repeat his British Grand Prix victory this weekend. The Spaniard took Ferrari’s first win of the season at Silverstone - charging away from Red Bull Racing pair Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in the closing stages after gaining track position in pitlane. Despite the win, Alonso still stands nearly four complete races behind Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel in the World Championship standings, and says he must focus on winning races rather than the title battle. “We have to be realistic, because we are 92 points behind in the classification and that is a very big gap,” says Alonso. “We will tackle the races one at a time, trying to win as many as possible. “This will also involve taking a few more risks and maybe it will happen that we pay a high price for that, but there is no alternative. “We are definitely not giving up, but we must not think about the championship... we are keeping our feet on the ground.”

6

The FIA’s decision to revert to the ‘Valencia’ regulations on off-throttle diffuser blowing, following its failed crack-down on the concept at Silverstone, is expected to play against Ferrari this weekend, with Red Bull and McLaren’s exhaust/diffuser packages having proven superior throughout the season so far. Alonso however is optimistic that the upgrades the 150th Italia received for Silverstone, which included a new rear wing and DRS activation mechanism, a revised rear suspension layout and altered exhaust position, will see the team competitive this weekend. “I haven’t spent too much time thinking about the technical

reasons behind the win in the British Grand Prix,” says Alonso. “There were definitely some major improvements on the car, which mean it feels much easier to drive now and you can feel it much more stuck to the ground than before, especially in the fast corners. “That means it’s got more aerodynamic downforce, which was the area where we trailed our main rivals the most. “I don’t think the changes to the engine mapping (for Silverstone) were a factor: we were quicker specifically at the part of the track where you practically don’t have to brake, which means it is the actual car that is going well.””

Round 10 – Nurburgring

TRACK DETAILS

Sauber technical director James Key on the challenges of the Nuburgring The Nurburgring is quite a mixed circuit with different features, which makes it hard to characterise. Good braking stability is important into turn one, where there is a potential overtaking opportunity. The first sector is relatively low speed, or at least is after turn one which results in a car which needs good traction and good levels of downforce. Then there is a high speed section down to the hairpin, which presents another overtaking opportunity. The second half to the lap is relatively high speed. Primarily it consists of medium and slow speed corners and a couple of relatively long straights with a chicane in the end and a difficult last corner. This is a challenge for the engineers and drivers to try and

get it right particularly in qualifying. It’s going to be an interesting weekend, because there are many different challenges with the big mix of corners and straights. The tyre compounds will be medium and soft. We know the medium tyres were a little tricky in Canada, so we have to work on them. The softs should be okay. OPINION by GREG RUST

Out of order

T

he age old argument over team orders in Grand Prix racing has been in full flight since the British Grand Prix. Red Bull Racing’s decision to ask Mark Webber to ‘hold position ‘ and not attempt a pass on team-mate Sebastian Vettel in the closing stages at Silverstone certainly raised a few eyebrow. My view on team orders has never changed - I think they really stink. That goes for any sport, not just motor racing. People want to see a contest for its purity, they don’t want to see something that’s contrived and manipulated or anything on those lines. I get why the team got on the radio and said what they said, but do I think there was going to be a repeat of Turkey (2010, when Webber and Vettel clashed)? No, I don’t. The thing I’ve struggled with the most since the British Grand Prix is that it goes against everything that Red Bull preached at Silverstone last year, and everything that Red Bull stands for. So I don’t understand why they did it from that perspective. Guys like David Coulthard (BBC commentator and former driver) have since said that those of us in the media need to do a better job of explaining the fact that team orders are now very much a part of the sport. Team orders have been rubber-stamped by the powers that be and they are very much part of the game now, and so we need to make sure that both the first time viewer and the longtime viewer understand that. That’s an interesting point, but all I’m trying to be is a barometer for public opinion and most people that you run into on the street don’t like it, and that’s the bottom line. My gut feel on it has been the same for a long time - I don’t like it. I understand the rationale of why it’s done, but I’m more than happy to have an argument with someone about it. There’s been a lot of chat this year about Mark’s future, which not surprisingly intensified after he seemingly

ignored the team’s wishes at Silverstone. Mark’s decision to ignore the orders was made at the heat of the moment. I don’t think it really matters for a Formula One driver what colour the car in front is - if you’re faster, then you want to make a pass. I think that, despite all this talk of Kimi Raikkonen coming back, or Mark going to Renault or Ferrari, he will stay at Red Bull - it’s just a matter of sorting out the details. He’ll complete 2012 with the team and then asses how the cards will fall from there. All the intellectual property that Mark has, in terms of how the team and the cars operate, will stay put for another year. Then if they are going to ultimately replace him with, hopefully, Daniel Ricciardo, it’ll give Daniel time to become the calibre of driver they need to partner Sebastian Vettel. Daniel would have 18 months to really prove himself, and if one Aussie could replace another, that’d really be a wonderful story for us. I think we’ll hear sooner rather than later on Mark’s future, maybe not this weekend, but I feel it won’t be too far away. Mark may not have had the race results on paper yet this year, but I think he’s getting there and there could be some race wins ahead in the coming races. Memories of the 2009 Nurburgring race, where he had his first Grand Prix victory, will be worth a huge amount to him heading into the weekend. Mark has clearly had a tougher time this year adapting to the Pirelli tyres compared to his team-mate Sebastian, but he seems to be really starting to get his head around how the tyres behave and how to make it work for him. So I think he’s in for a really good weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY The relaxation of the off-throttle diffuser blowing regulations should see Red Bull return serve on Ferrari this weekend. Even with the one-off Silverstone rules in place, the RB6s continued to set the pace, with Webber and Vettel sharing the front-row of the grid, and the race only being lost in the pitstops. Apart from Red Bull’s occasional pitlane gaff, the now long-running feud between its drivers may be the team’s only weakness. Although Webber will be especially fired up after the Silverstone team orders battle, Vettel is the clear favourite to take his first home GP win.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Having appeared one of the worst hit by the recent rule changes, McLaren will be hoping to - at a minimum - get back on top of Ferrari this weekend. Button and Hamilton managed just fifth and 10th respectively in qualifying at the team’s home Grand Prix, while a faulty wheel gun took Button out of the race falling from second to fifth in the championship as a result. The two Britons now sit equal on points, but expect Hamilton to assert his authority in the coming races. The 2008 World Champion fought doggedly at Silverstone, holding off Massa for fourth while running out of fuel in the waning laps VODAFONE McLAREN MERCEDES

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Ferrari made genuine gains with its revised aerodynamic and suspension parts at Silverstone, but it remains difficult to expect Alonso to challenge Red Bull Racing this weekend. The Scuderia benefited from the wet weather at the start of the British Grand Prix, as it ensured the harder compound tyre did not need to be used. Even on the soft Alonso and Massa struggled initially for tyre temperature compared to their rivals - a problem which should again hurt this weekend. Anything less than a podium will be disappointing for Alonso, but against a potentially resurgent McLaren it’s no sure thing. THE BAGMAN’S SAY Mercedes GP heads into its second home race in as many weekends, with the Germanowned, UK-based squad having endured another difficult weekend at Silverstone. The team’s upgrades did show some signs of improvement however, allowing both Rosberg and Schumacher to score points, despite the latter committing another fundamental driving error. The seven-time World Champion took ninth place despite being handed a 10 second stop-go penalty for knocking Kobayashi into a spin in the early laps. Having both cars in the back half of the top 10 this weekend will be a solid result. MERCEDES GP PETRONAS F1 TEAM

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Renault is expected to provide its drivers with a more competitive package this weekend after the team’s predicted lacklustre performance without its aggressive off-throttle diffuser blowing system at Silverstone. Petrov and Heidfeld qualified just 14th and 16th for the British Grand Prix - a position from which the German did well to score points. Petrov finished 15s adrift of the points last time out, and heads to the Nurburgring following a busy schedule of promoting the 2014 Russian Grand Prix in his home land. Expect at least one Renault in the top 10 in the race this weekend, although qualifying might again prove to be a struggle.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Despite the result, Williams appeared to make a small step forward at Silverstone - running new exhaust, diffuser, front wing and suspension pieces in the race after confirming their potential in practice. Maldonado qualified an impressive seventh, but again missed out on his maiden Grand Prix points after struggling badly in the opening wet laps. The team will again be among those to bring new parts this weekend, with front and rear wing revisions complemented by tweaked engine software. Both drivers will contend for the final points.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Mistakes cost Force India certain points at Silverstone - a situation which cannot be repeated, says team principal Vijay Mallya. Paul di Resta’s outstanding sixth place qualifying performance turned sour thanks to a significant delay when the team prepared Sutil’s tyres for the Scot’s first pitstop. Later contact with Buemi saw di Resta end the race a lowly 15th, while team-mate Sutil also missed the points. Di Resta has raced at the Nurburgring several times in the DTM, but only on the shorter version, while its a home race for Sutil. The rule changes may make Q3 a more difficult task this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Silverstone marked Perez’s first points since his horrendous Monaco shunt, with a seventh place finish coming after another wily run on a two-stop strategy. The team will bring minor diffuser and rear brake duct revisions to the Nurburgring, a circuit where neither of its drivers have competed in a Grand Prix before. Kobayashi will be looking to bounce back after two poor races. The Japanese was penalised for colliding with Maldonado in the Silverstone pitlane after earlier contact with Schumacher. Kobayashi is again a definite points scoring threat.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY The tide has turned at Toro Rosso, with Alguersuari now ahead of Buemi in the points standings after a third consecutive top 10 finish at the British Grand Prix. Making matters worse for Buemi, the Swiss driver was forced to retire at Silverstone thanks to damage sustained in a collision with di Resta. Although the team has lacked qualifying pace all season, its double Q1 knockout in Britain was more to do with poor reading of the weather than outright speed. With neither driver having qualified inside the top 15 since Barcelona, STR again starts as an outside chance for points.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Prior to Silverstone, The Bagman hypothesised that the high level of reliability among the current crop of Formula One cars would again make it impossible for Team Lotus to score points. It was with some irony that both green and gold entries ground to a halt within 10 laps of the start of the British Grand Prix. With Kovalainen losing fourth gear and Trulli suffering an oil leak, it was an embarassing result on home soil for the Norfolk based squad. Earlier in the weekend, rain had allowed the Finn to make a rare Q2 showing. Don’t expect the same to happen this weekend. THE BAGMAN’S SAY Ricciardo hopes to close the gap to team-mate Liuzzi this weekend. The rookie Aussie proved a little under 0.6s shy of the Italian in qualifying at Silverstone, while the gap between the pair grew considerably in the race. The art of being lapped while losing the least amount of time may not win world championships, but its a skill Ricciardo will have to learn if he is to come to terms with Liuzzi this year. Ricciardo will benefit from having raced at the Nurburgring last month in Formula Renault 3.5. This line-up will provide much needed added excitement to Q1 as the season continues.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Virgin Racing continues its quiet battle with Hispania at the back of the field. Both Glock and D’Ambrosio outqualified the Spanish team cars at Silverstone - with Glock doing so to the tune of a full second. Unlike the Lotus entries, both MVR-02s ran reliably over the course of the British Grand Prix, but the two laps lost to race winner Alonso shows the enormity of the work that still needs to be done. Expect a similar gap to the front of the field this weekend.
