The Hungary Paradox
T
he Hungarian Grand Prix is perhaps the most underrated race on the Formula One World Championship calendar.
Sure, the tight nature of the 4.4km, 16-turn, Hungaroring layout makes overtaking highly difficult - an issue extenuated by a low-grip surface that’s typically sandy off-line. There’s no denying that, like every circuit, the Hungaroring has seen the odd dull race. Ferrari’s demolition of the 2004 event is a case in point. Perhaps paradoxically however, the Hungarian Grand Prix has showcased some of the very best of what Formula One has to offer across the last 25 years. The first Hungarian Grand Prix of the modern era, run in 1986 while the country was still under a communist regime, saw Nelson Piquet take the win after pulling off a frankly ridiculous pass around the outside of Ayrton Senna at Turn 1. Full opposite lock with the right-front lit up - in 2011-speak it was a ‘YouTube moment’. Great moves at the Hungaroring have often been inventive as well. Think Michael Schumacher being outfoxed by Jacques Villenueve while negotiating traffic in the 1996 race. Nigel Mansell executed a similarly spectacular trick on Senna in 1989 - a race where the lion-hearted Brit stormed through from 12th on the grid to take the winner’s trophy. Jenson Button trumped his countryman’s efforts 17 years later, winning in mixed conditions from the outside of the seventh row. That 2006 race, which included a spectacular outside pass from Fernando Alonso on Michael Schumacher, marked Button’s first Grand Prix victory. Heikki Kovalainen (2008), Alonso (2003) and Damon Hill (1993) have also celebrated their first wins at the venue, while twice it has decided the World Championship (Mansell 1992, Schumacher 2001). Adding Hill’s 1997 last lap heartbreak in the Arrows, and the 2007 qualifying stoush between McLaren team-mates Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, to the mix shows one never knows what to expect in Hungary. With four different winners across the last four races this season, the 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix is sure unlikely to be boring.

Battle Royale Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari are locked in combat as the second half of the season kicks off
B
y contrast to the early season dominance of Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing, the Formula One circus heads to Hungary this weekend having seen four different winners in the last four races. Excitingly for Formula One fans, the German Grand Prix marked the first time all season that McLaren and Ferrari both challenged Red Bull in the same race. The final result was Lewis Hamilton first and Fernando Alonso second, with the RB6 mounted duo Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel third and fourth. Vettel’s remarkable start to the year came to an end - failing to start and finish among the top two for the first time since the year season kicked off in March at Albert Park. While Red Bull enters the Budapest weekend looking to maintain its unbeaten 2011 qualifying record, Hamilton and Alonso are on the attack. Both drivers, however, admit that the performance order this weekend is extremely hard to predict. “It’s going to be a completely

different challenge this weekend.,” says Hamilton. “The weather conditions will be much hotter than they were at the ‘Ring and the nature of the circuit will be very different too. “The Hungaroring is a tight and twisty racetrack, not dissimilar to Monaco in terms of downforce levels, and it offers no let up for the drivers. “There wasn’t much between McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull in Germany. It’s going to be fascinating to see which team holds the advantage.” Increased temperatures will certainly suit the Ferraris, which have struggled for tyre warm-up this season. Alonso has scored the more
points than anyone over the last three races, but is also cautious when making predictions. “We have made up a lot of ground compared to the very early part of the season in terms of performance, but we must take a further step forward,” says the double World Champion. “We still lack something, especially in qualifying. It’s true that in the race we can make up for this, but it’s not always possible to move up two places compared to our grid position, as happened in Monaco, Valencia, Silverstone and Nurburgring.” With a four-week mid-season break to come after Hungary, bragging rights are well and truly on the line.

Behind the scenes
F
rom time to time I get asked about the process we go through in order to bring you the coverage of each and every Formula One race during the season. Essentially for me, I’m not a producer but I really enjoy getting involved in a great many of the production aspects. During the week leading up to a race our team will sit down as a group and pick the key topics that we think are worth chasing. We then start liaising with the relevant people for the weekend, whether it’s (on the ground correspondents) James Allen or Tom Clarkson, and get a mud map together of what we’re looking for. Tom goes to every round and James doesn’t, so it varies a bit as to who does what. The boys are very good, they don’t stick hard and fast to the plan, they change it on the run depending on what’s topical and what they’ve got. Sometimes things on your wish list don’t come together, you may want Fernando Alonso but the planets don’t align in terms of when you’ve got camera time and things like that. Then you’ve got other times when it works absolutely beautifully. The amount of Tweets we’ve had from people about what Nikki Lauda has had to say when he’s been on has been amazing. People love his frankness. A key thing to remember with our telecasts is that essentially we are graphically disadvantaged. We’d love to do what the BBC do and go to every round with a small army of people on hand to go and collate content. What we did in Abu Dhabi with James and I (for the 2010 season finale) was a real high for me, but it’s not possible to be doing that all the time so we do the best with the resources we have. James and Tom have been excellent for us. James knows television very well obviously (having previously headed ITV’s Formula One coverage), and TC is essentially from a print background but he has come on in leaps and bounds this year.
I enjoy getting my hands pretty heavily involved in what we do. I can’t always promise that we’ll get it right for everyone, but it’s about walking that tight rope of catering for the hardcore viewers and those who are completely new to it. Our ratings indicate that the success of Mark Webber and the variety and excitement we’ve had in Formula One of late has grown and changed the audience. We’ve had to adapt to that. Of course the whole thing is made possible by the tremendous group of people behind the scenes. Our overseeing producer is a guy called Michael Heaton who has a long motorsport background in this country, two wheels and four. The nuts and bolts producer on race weekends, Nina Harlan, has been around since the Channel 9 days with Alan Jones and Darrell Eastlake, so she’s got a long history with the sport as well. As far as my on-air colleagues go, Daz (Darryl Beattie) and I have known one another for over a decade, and he’s become like a brother. I think that sort of repour is something that you can’t create, it really has to be genuinely there. Bairdo (Craig Baird) has slotted into the mix so easily for very similar reasons. We’ve been dealing with one another through Super Tourers and V8 Supercars since 1997 when he was a stand by driver for the Diet Coke BMW team. When the management at Ten decided to make the telecasts a mix of a BBQ style conversation with the good stuff from on the ground sprinkled in between, it wasn’t something that we had to think twice about. At the end of the day we don’t always get it right, but we’re constantly thinking of ways to do things better. I really think it’s critical to have that attitude.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY By Sebastian Vettel’s standards, fourth place at the Nurburgring was a disaster. Missing the front-row of the grid for the first time all season, spinning wildly in the opening stint and suffering an unexplained brake issue contrived to keep the rapid German off the podium. Don’t expect a repeat this weekend however, with Red Bull returning to a track where it dominated last year. In 2010, Vettel’s pole time was 1.2s faster than Ferrari’s best effort. While a front-row lockout won’t guarantee a one-two finish with the Super Soft and Soft tyres on such an abrasive surface, it won’t hurt, either..

After a dismal showing at the British Grand Prix, particularly in qualifying, Hamilton took his second win of the season at the Nurburgring thanks to a mix of speed, race craft and strategy. This weekend is one of milestones at McLaren, with the 2.4 litre Mercedes engine celebrating its 100th race and Button enjoying his 200th Grand Prix start. The 2009 World Champion will need a change of luck if he is to remember this race fondly however, after mechanical failures in the last two races. Hamilton is a genuine chance. THE BAGMAN’S SAY While Red Bull has been quick on every circuit this year, taking all 10 pole positions, Ferrari’s form has - like that of McLaren - been more difficult to predict. Alonso only narrowly lost out on victory in Germany - emerging from the second round of stops with the lead before finding himself on the wrong side of a brilliant manoeuvre by Hamilton. Tyre warm-up has hampered the F150th Italia this season, but will not be such an issue this weekend thanks to the higher ambient. Alonso is an outside chance for the win, providing the team’s trick new wheel nuts don’t prove the problem they did for Massa in Germany. THE BAGMAN’S SAY Mercedes GP looks set to continue its trend of plugging away in the back half of the top 10 this weekend. The team has a long way to go before it can be considered a threat to Red Bull, McLaren or Ferrari, but has steadily eased away from Renault in recent races. With fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship the team’s only achievable target, more points this weekend will be a solid result. Schumacher will hope to have a rare trouble-free race after incidents in Europe (collision with Petrov), Britain (collision with Kobayashi) and Germany (solo spin). THE BAGMAN’S SAY While the Renault R31s campaigned at the Nurburgring proved far more competitive than those seen two weeks earlier at Silverstone - particularly in qualifying - a single point was hardly a strong outcome. Renault continued to race with its forward facing exhaust package on both cars in Germany, despite trialling its rearward facing solution in practice. Balance issues may see the team again refrain from racing the new design this weekend. The Hungaroring will see Bruno Senna take the wheel of Heidfeld’s car in Practice 1 as speculation continues to mount over the German’s future. Torquey Renault engine should help secure more points this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY WIlliams struggled badly with tyre degradation last weekend in Germany - a fact that does not bode well heading to the highly abrasive, high-temperature Hungaroring. Adding the Super Soft tyre into the mix this weekend is likely to compound matters further. The team will try a revised version of the rear wing it practised with last weekend abandoning it before the race due to structural issues. KERS also remains a question mark, with Barrichello having raced without it in order to access its impact on tyre wear. Points will be a stretch.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Adrian Sutil enjoyed his strongest race of the season at the Nurburgring - qualifying eighth and finishing sixth. The final result was a mixture of speed and strategy however, with Sutil the only driver to finish in the points having stopped just twice. The strategy allowed Sutil to finish ahead of Rosberg’s Mercedes, despite being almost a full second slower than his fellow German in qualifying. Di Resta will be extra keen to return to the points prior to the mid-season break having failed to record a top 10 finish since Malaysia.

Kobayashi stormed through the field at the Nurburgring, finishing ninth after an embarrassing Q1 exit on Saturday that saw him start18th. For Perez, returning to Budapest will bring back memories of his disastrous 2010 weekend at the circuit. The Mexican crashed out of Sunday’s GP2 event - severely damaging his title chances. Both Sauber drivers will contend strongly for the final points this weekend.

The strategy has been continually employed by the team over recent races, and may work wonders if tyre wear is as heavy as expected in Budapest. Buemi’s chance at points in Germany evaporated thanks to an awkward early race collision with Heidfeld’s Renault, while Alguersuari was unable to make it four points finishes in a row, coming home 12th.

With Kovalainen, who scored his only Formula One victory in Hungary in 2008, a full two seconds shy of making Q2 last weekend in Germany, progressing through Q1 appears highly unlikely.
