This project has been co-financed by the European Union

Introduction

Cyclists

welcome in

South Moravia ake your bike, or start by unfolding your road map, and set off for rides across South

T

Moravia. It is worth doing. Within one single day you can admire fertile fields and

vineyards in the lowlands, and in next to no time you can enjoy a ride through forests resembling those in a mountain range. You can pedal your bike in the centre of a town and in a moment you can pass along silent woody landscapes or rivers. Take, e.g., the Lednice-Valtice area or the battlefield of Austerlitz where you embrace history, and on the same day you can be confronted with the pulsating present in the Brno Exhibition Centre. In the Moravian Karst you can take a deep plunge in the mystic world of underground caves and submersible streams. A few hours later you can admire South Moravia high above the ground from the gallery of some of the numerous outlooktowers. There are many attractive spots in this region that you can reach without any particularly fast vehicle – a bicycle will do. South Moravia is a true gem for cycling tourists. In order to facilitate their excursions, the real world of South Moravia has been complemented with yet another world, launched in autumn 2007, and namely a virtual one. That information guide for bicycle touring through South Moravia is only a modest review of information; all available data can be accessed via internet: "Cycling portal of the Southern Moravia Region" www.cyklo-jizni-morava.cz www.radfahren-landesbezirk-sudmahren.com www.cycling-southern-moravia-region.com This guide is part of an implemented project that has been co-financed within Measure 1.3, Tourist travel and offer of leisure activities – Program of Initiatives if the Community INTERREG IIIA Austria – Czech Republic, under the title "Cycling Tourism Portal of the South Moravian Region linked with Lower Austria ". This project runs under the auspices of Mr. Milan Venclík, 1st deputy of the Governor of the South Moravian Region.

Notes to track descriptions in the brochure: – place at the track – place close to the track – dangerous length, risky spot

Difficulty classification: ■ Easy trail Asphalt or other smooth surfaces prevail. The profile is flat (or down the slope) or with rather small ups and downs. Even an untrained person and a child under 10 can cope. ■ Trail of medium difficulty The surface varies. In some instances the gradient may be considerable. Recommended for partially trained persons and more mature children. ■ Difficult trail The surface varies. The profile has considerable gradients in the up-direction. The down-slopes require low speed considering the surface. Recommendable only to trained persons, in general not suitable for children.

Landscape classification along the trail: Highly attractive The landscape along the track is rich in natural elements (forests, rocks, water streams) or the man-made elements match the landscape, some artificial and some canalised streams, parks, architectural monuments…). The landscape along the trail is diversified. Close to it national and international monuments accessible for the public, monuments of technology and important sites for the natural sciences (natural reservations, natural monuments, memorable trees etc.). The prevailing share of the trail is separated from automobile traffic. Medium attractive Man-made elements (woods, agricultural lands, canalised streams, settlements) that partly match the landscape and partly not prevail along the trail. Certain sections are rather monotonous, certain sections are manysided. Close to the trail memorable places of regional importance are accessible for the public, technical monuments and valuable natural sites (natural reservations, natural memorable places and memorable trees) can be found along the trail. In some instances the track is separated from automobile traffic, in others both are combined. Less attractive Man-made elements (woods, agricultural lands, canalised streams, settlements) that partly match the landscape and partly not are seen to prevail along the trail. The landscape along the trail tends to be rather monotonous. There are few memorable places, technical monuments and natural sites (natural reservations, memorable sites and trees) along the way. In some instances the track is separated from automobile traffic, but mostly both are combined. Certain hurdles can occur discouraging the bikers from using the track, such as very dense automobile traffic, long impassable sections, necessity to carry the bikes.

The track in Brno leads predominantly over agreeable cycling paths or smaller streets, further along the right bank of the Brno dam lake over a lively street of the 2nd class. From Veverská Bitýška to Tišnov mostly over roads of 3rd class. Roads with low traffic and frequent ups and downs between Tišnov and Doubravník (through Lomnice). Dense car traffic at the 2nd class road in the section Doubravník – Nedvědice. This is a favoured track among the Brno cycling fans, as the starting way for excursions into the surrounding of the Brno dam lake and further to the Czech-Moravian highlands. Dangerous spots: All crossings of lively streets in Brno, especially Vídeňská and at Anthropos, public lighting poles standing in the line of the path between Brno-Komín and Brno-Bystrc, further densely frequented road of the 2nd class in Čebín, and the section Doubravník – Nedvědice with heavy car traffic. Families with children are recommended to favour unmarked roads at the left bank of the river in Brno Jundrov, the same applies to the bypass of the Brno dam lake, even for the price of overcoming the rather "breakneck" section at Zouvalka opposite the Veveří castle.

Brno, FC Sparta stadium: crossroads of international routes 1, 4, 5 until a perfect network of cycling trails will have been build along the rivers Svitava and Svratka. Brno, Rondo hall: about 1 km from the main railway station Brno. Dangerous crossing of two streets. Brno: the second largest city of ČR, close to 400 000 inhabitants, historically the administrative centre of Moravia, the trade fair centre number one in the country, municipal monument reservation. Špilberk, castle, Old town hall, Měnínská gate (Orlí str.), Petrov, cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, St. James church (Jakubské square), St. Thomas church and former monastery of the Augustinians (Moravské square), former Capuchin Friary (Kapucínské square), former Minorites Friary (Minoritská str.), New town hall (Dominikánské square), Dietrichstein Palace and Moravian Land Museum (Zelný market), Bishops Court (en-trance Zelný market), Villa Tugendhat (Černopolní street, city district Černá Pole). Essential work of functionalist architecture worldwide, UNESCO listed. Brno, Staré Brno: dangerous crossing at the beginning of Vídeňská street. Brno, Exhibition Centre: halls in the Bauhaus style, frequent trade fair events, sport events and concerts at the adjacent velodrom. Brno, Anthropos hall: museum. Macquette of a mammoth in actual size. A dangerous street crossing nearby. Brno, Jundrov, bridge. Brno, Komín: St. Lawrence church. The section Komín – Bystrc, marked as cycling track, has public lighting poles in the pavement. The cycling traffic tends to be lively. Brno, Bystrc, Letenská foot bridge: option to turn off to the picturesque valley Údolí oddechu. Nice hilly paths and meadows, deer park. Brno, Bystrc, centre: Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. Birth place of painter and sculptor Jakub Obrovský. Protected lime tree at the centre of the city district. ZOO at the left bank of the river Svratka. Brno, Bystrc, boat port: The Brno dam lake called also Kníničská. Boat cruises between the barrage and Veverská Bítýška (using accumulator batteries). Transport of bicycles permitted. Danger of collisions with cars and pedestrians at the whole right bank of the dam lake!

Amber trail, Road Brno – Vienna

international

The trail leads mostly over 3rd class roads, special purpose asphalt roads or newly built cycling tracks, at the Austrian border also over a former signal way. Especially the section between Brno and the shopping centre Olympia is favoured for cycling and in-line skating. Its benefits reside in its level profile and relative safety for families with children. It is also popular among distant bike riders as a connection between Brno and Pálava and the Lednice-Valtice area, Novomlýnské artificial lakes, or between Brno and Vienna. Its disadvantage is the lack of accompanying green; it is not recommendable during really hot days.

Brno, FC Sparta stadium: crossroads of international routes 1, 4, 5, until a perfect network of cycling tracks will have been built along the rivers Svitava and Svratka. Brno, shopping Zone South: hypermarkets. Modřice, Olympia: the church of Holy Gotthard of 1723–26, Baroque style upon a Romanesque foundation. The rectory in the Masaryk street, built in 1726, is also Baroque. The chapel of St. Wenceslas in the square is New Baroque with some elements of cubism. Tramline connection with Brno. The shopping and leisure centre Olympia operates since 1999. Rebešovice: belfry of 1830 in the village square, summer castle with chapel of St. Dorothy. Rajhradice: barn of 1809, chapel of 1896–7 and belfry in Loučka of 1848. Rajhrad: the provoship of the břevnov-based Benedict order was founded as early as 1048. The Baroque church of St. Peter and Paul according to a project by J. Santini was built 1722–39. The convent and the prelate residence of the monastery were built in the 19th century. The sculpture of Holy Jan Nepomucký of mid 18th century standing in the park of the monastery is in the Baroque style, as well as the church of the Finding of the Holy Cross (1722–39) and the sculpture of St. Florian of the 18th century. The bridge over an arm of Svratka dated 1760–61 is a technical monument. Opatovice: church of St. Charles Boromeus. Blučina: the town hall of 1602 in late Renaissance, the church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary has a late Romanesque nucleus of the 13th century. The Baroque plague column was built in 1720. The wayside column at the road from Moutnice dates back to the 18th century. The hill Výhon with orchards and a superb vista of the broad valley called Dyjskosvratecký úval testify to the strategic location of dwellings of praehistoric cultures. If riding a bike, the hill is accessible from the crossroads at the motorway. Židlochovice: Renaissance castle of 1592. Re-structured to a representative Baroque residence in 1722–28, Empire adaptations in 1844–45. Since 1918 property of the Czechoslovak state. Since 1924 the summer residence of president T. G. Masaryk. At the present day it is a representative place for important interstate visits. The natural landscape park at the castle is open. The Renaissance town hall of 1559 has been renovated in the Empire style. Opposite to it an interesting Jugendstil house (restructured in 1911), at the square nám. Míru the National house (1912) is also an example of the Jugendstil, whereas house No 28 of the 2nd half of 19th century is in the style of New Renaissance. The culminating Baroque style is represented by the parish church of the Rising of the Holy Cross of 1717–30. Hrušovany u Brna: former sugar mill built 1916–18. Large plant producing foam concreteu. Žabčice: barn of 1713 at a farmyard. Přísnotice: cross wayside to Vranovice of 17th century, commemorating the Tartar invasion to Moravia in 1663.

However, this project damaged the original environmental system of wet forests at the confluence of Jihlava, Svratka and Dyje. The middle lake (Věstonická) is a reservation. Hradisko: plateau at the north of the Upper dame lake. Remnants of a military station of the Romans from the period of 166 to 181 at the northern border of the Roman Empire, at the contact line with Germanic tribes. Unique findings of the commanders building, of a Roman spa including water conduits, bricks with Roman inscriptions, cash, ceramics, buckles and harness. An un-matched finding site in this country. Brod n. church of St. Jan Nepomuk of 1770, the transition period between Baroque and Classicism. Interesting Classicist double house No 83. Drnholec, crossing Drnholec: renaissance chateau built 1583, adapted in the Baroque/Classicist style in the 18th century. Late baroque church of the Holy Trinity built 1750–57, the late Renaissance parsonage, the town hall dated 1591, originally in the Renaissance style, burger houses in the Empire style and Baroque sculpture of Virgin Mary dated 1718. Drnholec and its surroundings are noted for very low annual precipitation average, the low height above sea level and the precipitation shade of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands combine to this effect. The track leads in Brno through the old industrial zone along the valley of the river Svitava, using partially streets, partially cycling paths, in section Brno, Obřany – Bílovice a forest road and a forest path. The section Bílovice – Adamov is a low-traffic road of 2nd class. A very nice asphalt road through the wood leads between Adamov and the place called Nový hrad, crossing to the main road. A dangerous section is road of 2nd class from the crossing Nový hrad down to Blansko and its continuation through the valley of Punkva (heavy car traffic). The trail has very nice sections in Suchý žleb at Sklaní mlýn (rocky formations) and then to the North from Sloup; some forest roads are prohibited for motor vehicles. However, within the vicinity of Brno marking can be missing or destroyed due to deplorable vandalism. Dangerous spots are all crossings of streets with heavy traffic in Brno. Considerable gradients should be overcome in the village Ostrov and at the north as well as south from the village Sloup.

Adamovské strojírny is a mechanical engineering plant with old tradition. New-Gothic church of St. Barbara built in 1855–57. Part of the altar, an excellent late Gothic work dated 1516–25, was originally in the Zwettl monastery. Nový castle, crossing. At the Well under the castle: ruin of a former Gothic castle above Svitava. A very steep forest road can be used for a ride almost to the castle (Route 5119). Nový castle, crossing with the main road. Dense traffic of motor vehicles on the road at the South of Blansko. Blansko, South Blansko, confluence of Svitava with Punkva: crossing at the south border of Blansko. Blansko: by the end of 17th century a smelting shop was founded as a basis of iron production. Cave Kůlna

Route Punkevní jeskyně (not marked) and before Sloup you can join trail 5. However, thus you will leave aside the caves Katerinská and Balcarka. Trail 5 leads from Skalní mlýn through Suchý žleb, (continuing up to Holštejn). Both deep valleys (žleb) contain numerous caves and lime stone formations. Pustý dry walley: carst valley without any water stream from Sloup to Skalní mlýn. It contains over 450 caves that are not open for the public, except for the accessible Punkevní caves. The limestone walls are up to 90 m high. Punkevní cave: caves open to the public. Discovered by K. Absolon in 1909–33. The excursion round starts in the dry section down to the bottom of the Macocha precipice and returns by boats over the submersible river Punkva. Blansek, crossing: castle ruin of 13th century above Pustý žleb opposite to Punkevní caves. The bicycles should be left there (guarded); then you can mount the green track for pedestrians, or there is an option to ride over the field path from Nové dvory. Koňský declivity: a strongly narrowed-down meander of Pustý žleb; at its foot the entrance has been cut through to Amatérská cave, combining with the caves Sloupsko-šošůvské, Punkevní and others, to form one single system of 35 km length. Punkva: submersible carst stream commencing in the Amateur cave by confluence of Sloupský brook and the Holštejn Bílá voda. It flows through Macocha and surfaces as Punkva. It flows on the surface of the bottom part of Pustý žleb, mouthing into Svitava close to Blansko. Kateřinská cave: this cave was discovered by the Absolon group in 1909, the length of corridors amounts to 500 m, of that 300 m have been disclosed for the public, important bone findings of cave bears. Macocha, crossing: 1 km distance to the abyss. Macocha: the famed abyss is 138,7 m deep (as measured to the level of the Lower Lake). The depth of the lake amounting to 48,9 m, the total depth of the abyss makes 187,6 m. Its opening has remarkable dimensions of 76×174 m, in form close to an oval. This precipice came to being by the destruction of the ceiling of an enormous cave. Nový Přerov, south crossing: see route 4. Dobré Pole, crossing: the community was originally inhabited by Croatians. St. Cecily church with nucleus of the transition period between the Gothic and the Renaissance styles. Slanisko Dobré Pole: national reservation, remainder of a salt field. Březí, railway stop: in the 18th and 19th centuries the village had and important Croatian minority. St. John Baptist church dated 1691–96. Mikulov, railway station: town with municipal monumental reservation, Border check point to Austria. Unusual concentration of architectural monuments. Property of the Liechtensteins (1249–1560) and Dietrichsteins (1575–1945). The town was tolerant to minorities, as evidenced by the presence of the prosecuted Neobaptist-Habaner sect that was persecuted in the 16th century, as well as by the size of the jewish community that used to be the administrative centre of Moravian Jews and the seat of the Moravian rabbi from mid 16th to mid 19th century. During the times of cardinal František Dietrichstein Mikulov was considered to be the Moravian cultural capital. The stagnation began after the railway road between Vienna and Brno by-passed Mikulov, and further after World War II, after the Germans had been expelled and the Iron Curtain located close by. The situation has improved afte. 1989, due to the revival of the border check point and to the refurbishment of the road to Brno. Down to the present day relatively cohesive sections of the city wall constructed since mid 14th century have been preserved. The chateau, originally a forti-fied castle from the beginning of the 13th century, was substantially re-built at the begin-ning of the 17th century under cardinal Dietrichstein. The castle received its present day Baroque form after the fire of 1719. It hosts the museum. Part of the exhibition is also the castle cellar with a giant barrel. The prevost church of Holy Wenceslas is mentioned as early as 1173. The municipal tower close to the St Wenceslas church is Gothic. The Piarist monastery with the church of Holy John Baptist was built in the style of early Baroque in 1666–89. Pálava used to be a municipal bath, evidenced as early as 1362. The House of penmen has a Baroque façade. Synagogue – probably founded around 1450. The square: column of the Holy Trinity dated 1724. Fountain of 1680. The townhall, originally a brewery, was adapted for its new purpose in 1660. House No 3 is a Renaissance building with a network vault in the lobby. House No 37 U rytířů (at Knights) in the Rennaissance style, an exceptionally valuable building of the 60ies of the 16th cen-tury. House No 32 is the most important prophane building in the Baroque style. The Dietrichstein tomb, a monument in the style of late Classicism, in the lower part of the square. Minaret

in section Nový Přerov – Mikulov The municipal tower Věž na Kozím hill from the 15th century served as an artillery point and a powder house. The Jewish cemetery with 2500 tombstones was founded mid 15th century. Svatý kopeček (Monte Santo), is a dominant of the town in Ital-ian style, atop of a limestone hill. The early Baroque form goes back to the 70ies of the 17th century. Nový pond, crossing: the pond is a natural reservation, an important nesting place of water fowl. Sedlec, kolonie: St. Guy church, originally Gothic. Large barn of the end of the 17th century in the Baroque style. Nesyt: the largest pond of Moravia (302 ha), a salt field close to Sedlec. Hraniční small castle (Summer chateau in the Empire style): of 1816–19. The border-line between Moravia and Austria used to pass through its center. Adapted to serve as a hotel. Hlohovec: until 1919 on Austrian territory. Similarly as a number of other villages founded by Croatians in 1583 who fled from their country before the Turks. The language minority was able to sustain until the beginning of the 20th century, then it integrated with its environment. St. Bartholomew church, late Clacissism, dated 1832. Lednické ponds: national natural reservation of very high value. Important nesting place of water fowl, crossing and rest station of birds on their annual passage. Part of the reservation are also the ponds of the Lednice castle park offering nesting opportunities on its isles, among others to the grey heron and the night heron. Open-air bathing at the Mlýnský pond (Apollo). Rybnický small castle: small Empire-style chateau of 1816–17. A station of the Czech Academy of Sciences. U Tří Grácií, crossing Lednice, crossing to the railway station Lednice, town square: Liechtenstein property from the 13th century, almost cotinuously down to 1945. In the place of an originally Gothic fortress a Renaissance chateau was built 1544–85. The existing form is New-Gothic of 1846–58. The eastern wing with historical installations is open to the public, 2 excursion circuits. Palm glasshouse (at the eastern side of the chateau) erected in 1843–45. An extraordinary technical achievement in its time, with imposing dimension (92×13×7,5 m). Lednický park: about 210 ha, mentioned for the first time in mid 16th century, the last adaptations in the sense of Romanticism were made in the 19th century. The upper part has been shaped in the French style. The lower part of the park is flown through by an arm of the river Dyje forming a system of channels and ponds with piled up isles that are interconnected with bridges. Various romantic elements in the park (minaret, a ruin of a Roman aquaduct and others) are arranged so as to offer views through the trees and bushes. During the last major adaptations of the park in 1884–87 a part of the town southwards from the castle had to giuve way, a New-Gothic square was buil,t as the park was considerably enlarged down to the railway station. The park takes pride in over 110 species of conifers and over 460 broad leave trees. In the direction to Břeclav the park converts freely into a wet forest landacape. The arm of Dyje serves for boat excursions. Riding bicycles in the park is not permitted. Car and bus traffic as well as pedestrian traffic tend to be very heavy at Lednice. Please beware of coollisions. Lednice, park. Minaret: erected in 1797–1802 in the Maur style according to the project of J. L. Hardtmuth (the largest structure of this type in non-islamic countries). Its height exceeds 60 m. The upper gallery can be reached over 302 steps. Excellent vista. Lovecký small castle: hunting summer castle of the 1st third of the 19th century in the style of Classicism. Janův castle, crossing: romantic imitation of a mediaeval chateau-fort, partially in ruins, designed by J. L. Hardtmuth 1807. It served as a hunters lodge and hunting castle. Open to the public. Many bikels and pedestrians can be usually encountered between Janův hrad and Břeclav. Beware of collisions. Břeclav: city and transport node. Fast development after the construction of the railroad. The section from Vienna to Břeclav, the very first on the AustroHungarian territory, was launched on June 6, 1839. A Renaissance Chateau of 1540–70 replacing an old royal castle of the Přemyslides and a later mediaeval fortress. It is embedded in a park combining freely with the surrounding wet forest. The St. Wenceslas church was finished in 1995 in the place of the original church of mid 18th century that had been destroyed during an airraid on November 20, 1944. Synagogue of 1868. Jewish cemetery with tomb stones of 17th to 20th century.

This trail is favoured for leisure rides, especially between Břeclav and Lanžhot. In Bředlav it leads over local streets and upon the dam of the river Dyje, further over scenic stretches using forest roads to Pohansko and to Lanžhot. and further roads of the 2nd and 3rd class. The trail can be enriched by an interesting diversion to the confluence of Dyje and Morava through the wettland woods over asphalt and cement block roads. However, especially in case of excursions with smalll children, you should assess your forces. The confluence area is out of reach during high water levelsdue to being flooded.

Břeclav: see Route 41. Pohansko: see Route 42. Lány, crossing: the distance over an unmarked way to the small castle Lány is 1,5 km, to the confluence of Morava and Dyje 12 km. Obora Soutok: unique extensive area at the confluence of Morava and Dyje, according to the Ramsar convention wet grounds of international importance, during higher water levels partially flooded. During the inundation of 1997 the area of the confluence was able to hold down the worst flood wave of the river Morava, thus reducing the damage on the territory of Slovakia. Hrúdy (clods) are elevated spots, the rests of sand dunes in deforested places with xerophyte vegetation. National reservation Cahnov, Ranšpurk and Na Soutoku. Deer and fallow deer park, but in some places oil drills. The confluence of Dyje and Morava ist best accessible over a forest road from the border point with Slovakia, when riding along the riverside of Morava. Arrows are used to mark the confluence. The last 0,4 km stretch of the path is hardly suitable for riding. In addition to that the moskitos tend to be plentiful. Lanžhot: certain original houses from the 19th century have been preserved. The church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross was built in the late Gothic style of the 16th century. The local museum was founded in 1993. Kostice: the chpel of St. Theresia and the chapel of the Holy Cross. A vilage with rich folklore life. Tvrdonice: the existing form of the church of Hl. Nicolas dates back to 1880–84. Houses with elements of original folk architecture. Oil extraction in the vicinity. The centre of the ethnographic area Podluží. Týnec: church of St. John Baptist dated 1760. Extraction of crude oil nearby. Moravská Nová Ves: lakes left after rhe mining of gravel-sand at the southeast from the village. Mikulčice: the mine Mír (opened 1979) is the only one still operating in the whole South Moravian lignite basin. It supplies the Hodonín thermal power station with lignite. The originally Gothic church of the Assumption of Holy Mary of the 2nd half of the 14th century was refurbished in the Baroque style. The archaeological finding place Valy see Route 44.

On very hot days, however, riding along the river between Lanžhot and Mikulčice or taking the roads through the villages is not recommendable; the shaded asphalt road through the wood roughly between the trails 43 and 44 can be a better option.

Lanžhot: see Route 43. Lanžhot, border check point Mikulčice, Valy: national cultural monument. One of the most outstanding settlement sites of the Great Moravian Empire with documented slavonic inhabitants since the 6th century. The main findings from the 9th century. The princely palace was found, 12 ecclesiastic buildings (among others a basilica with one nave and two aisles, churches), magnate residences, houses of the simple folk, high walls made of clay. Hundreds of tombs were opened, mostly of the members of the ruling class. They contained rich findings of various items, including silver and gold objects, very fine artistic handicraft. A decline can be witnesed at the beginning of the 10th century; at those times mostly village inhabitants were left. The whole settlement area has about 200 ha. The room of the former basilica has been surrounded by a roofed wall, the findings have been conserved for demonstration purposes. Skařiny: natural reservation – in the springtime partially flooded wet forest with a large nesting place of white storks and grey herons. Mikulčice: see trail 43.

The St. Lawrence church came to being by restructuring an older church documented as early as in the 13th century. The parsonage is mentioned in 1240. The old town hall in the Masaryk square dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. The former Jewish cemetery at the road to Břeclav (opposite the sugar mill) with tombstones of 16th–20th century has been converted in a park. The House of Artists, today the Gallery of Graphic Art, is a work of Arch. Ant. Blažek. The most famous person born in Hodonín is the first president of Czechoslovakia Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. Within the boundaries of the hospital a spa is located. Lužice: centre of oil mining of the South Moravian region. Moravian trail

national

The trail leads predominantly over reinforced field paths, some of them of rather poor quality, through wet meadows of the river Morava. Local streets are usually used in the villages. In many stretches there are gradually replaced by good cycling tracks. The length of about 1 km of the 1st class road at Rohatec is dangerous and requires attention.

The trail leads from the direction Olomouc, Kroměříž, Otrokovice, Uherské Hradiště. Veselí nad Moravou: a part of the town upon a river isle is a municipal monument zone. The Renaissance chateau was built in the 16th century, replacing the old castle. Close to the railwaystation the Baroque church of Holy Guardian Angels of 1714–34 catches the eye by its high roof and small towers. The buildings of the former Servit Monastery have been preserved at the church. The St. Bartholomew church bears features of the late Gothic style of the 1st half of 13th century, at least in its nucleus. A synagogue, a water power station and the former manorial yard No 664 are further interesting structures. Vnorovy: in the 1st half of the 19th century a meteorite weighing over 35 kg fell down close to the village. It is deposited in a Vienna museum. Birthplace of Martin Húsek, a priest of the Hussites (died in Prague at the stake in 1421), and of the illegal worker Maruška Kudeříková who was executed by the Nazis for having helped the Czechs to pass through the border to Slovakia. The church of St. Elisabeth from the beginning of the 20th century in the style of New Baroque. Strážnice: see trail 46. Attention at the street of 1st class at Rohatec. Rohatec-colony Rohatec: oil drills and inoperable lignite mines in the vicinity.Close to the crossing of the railway track Rohatec – Sudoměřice and Morávka a dumping facility is still standing that used to load lignite to boats navigating from here through the Baťa canal to Otrokovice. Baťův canal: navigational canal leading in parallel with the river Morava that was built by Baťa in the stretch Rohatec – Otrokovice, serving formerly in particular for transporting South Moravian lignite for the Bata power station at Otrokovice, but was later neglected. Its length is 50 km, of that 26 km through the riverbed of Morava and the remainder through an artificial channel that was also intended for irrigation. It was launched in 1938. Steel boats of 36 m and 1,2 m draught were pulled at first by horses and later by a tractor. That is why a dam was built along the whole artificial branch facilitating the movement of animals or machines. In 1945 the channel was destroyed by the retreating German army, after the war in 1947 the operation was renewed for a short time but then terminated allegedly due to poor economy. After 1989 it has been gradually refurbished so as to be navigable for excursions and sporting motor boats. It is necessary to navigate over locks (the total of 13), but the passage of boats through the chambers is free of charge. Some of the excursion boats transport also bicycles. There are lease points of boats at the bank offering the option of reserving a program with one's own vessel or a lease boat. Očovské meadowland: natural monument, wet and moist meadows and bushes. Hodonín: see trail 45.

Physical difficulty: The track gradually rises from Znojmo to the Bohemian-Moravian highlands and is, accordingly, more difficult than in the opposite direction. In general it can be assessed as medium difficult. Attractiveness of the landscape: In the neighbourhoods of Znojmo the track is not very attractive, leading on vivid roads between the fields. Northwest from Jevišovice, though, there is a relatively long and very scenic section over an asphalt forest road. Also the town of Jevišovice charms the bikers by its castle silhouette, the renovated barn, the old barrage and a nice natural camping place. Road number marking 24

Znojmo, centre: the town used to be an economic and cultural centre of Southwest Moravia. As early as 1190 Konrád Otta founded a Premonstrater monastery at Louka. Further historical events: King Zikmund died here in 1437; thus the Luxemburg dynasty died out. In 1628 after the battle on the White Mountain, the Land Council took place in Znojmo, declaring the new Land concept for Moravia, and namely legalising the heredity of the Hapsburgs on the Czech throne, the recatholisation and the germanisation. – As to the Znojmo speciality, pickled cucumbers: By the end of the 16th century the abbot of the Loucký monastery imported cucumbers as a drug against the plague. Municipal monumental reservation. The old town with small curved streets with late Romanesque layout of the beginning of the 13th century is separated from the new town with mostly preserved town walls. The municipal tower built 1445–48 ranges among the best Gothic profane structures in this country. The underground (entrance Slepičí trh 2) of the 13th–17th century consists of interlinked multi-storey cellars of former civic houses. Quite a number of original houses of citizens. The oldest one is the Gothic house of Mikulášská 13, built at the onset of the 14th century. The original fortified castle on a mountain ridge above the valley of brook Gránice was restructured in 1710–21 to a Baroque château (hosting the exhibition of the South Moravian museum). Its area comporises the St. Catherine rotunda, a national cultural monument) belonging to the castle and decorated with Romanesque wall paintings of Přemyslide knights, is dated 1134, thus being the oldest profane historic painting in this country. The permitted daily number of visitors of the rotunda has been restricted. The Gothic St. Nicolas church (Mikulášské nám.) upon Romanesque foundations was buitt after 1338 and finished in the 2nd half of the 15th century. The Wenceslas chapel (Mikulášské nám.), was built after 1512. The church of the Erection of the Holy Cross (Dolní Česká street), originally in the Gothic style, was re-built in the style of the Renaissance and later in that of Baroque. In the adjacent former Dominican friary the cross-corridor of the end of the 15th century has been preserved. The Jesuite St. Michel's church (Jesuit square). The St. John Baptist church with the former Capuchin monastery (Masaryk square) comes from the 1st half of 17th century. The St. Elisabeth church (Vídeňská street), originally Gothic of the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, was expanded in the Baroque style in the 2nd half of 17th century. The original Gothic Minorit church of the 13th century (Přemyslovců 6) was the place of the first tomb of king Přemysl Otakar II in 1279–97, after he had fallen in the battle on the Moravian Field. Today this is the seat of the South Moravian museum with archaeological, histori-cal, zoological and botanical collections that are open for the pubic. The former Premon-strater church with the church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and of St. Wenceslas was founded in 1190. After having been destroyed in 1425 during the Hussite wars, it was renovated as a magnanimous Baroque building after 1748. Due to the liquidation of the monastery in 1784 it was never completed. For some time it served as a tobacco factory and later it was turned to barracks.
