e’re honored to bring you the freshly redesigned second issue of Snapixel Magazine - our version of a themebased, community-driven, media publication.

All of the amazing images you see in the following pages were submitted and chosen by users of the online photography community, Snapixel.com. Each month we’ll publish an online PDF and an on-demand print version of Snapixel Magazine. February brings our Landscape Theme out into the open. With an impressive 268 submissions, Snapixel community members and staff voted on 26 photographs by 22 photographers. Each and every one of them is breathtaking and takes the viewer from the mountains of Northern California to the waters of Indonesia and Cape Town. This issue features Paul Phillips, who contributed the cover photo, Mystical Forest, as our photographer of the month. Caleb Long also gets a chance to chat about his 365 day photography project. We hope you enjoy this issue and can’t wait to see what you have to share with us next month! Cheers, The Snapixel Team

W

We chat with Caleb Long about his 365 photos / 365 day photo project

C

aleb Long is the recent creator of Snapixel’s group, threesix five-365, where users post one photo a day, every day, for a year. With already over a hundred photos uploaded, the group is creating a fascinating gallery of photographs that motivate and inspire users to hone their camera skills through the tried and true test of constant practice.

How did you come up with the idea for threesixfive-365? Well, it’s not originally my idea. I had read a bunch about it all over the internet on different photographyrelated sites. In January 2010, I made it my New Year’s resolution to participate in this awesome project. Some people do a 52 Week project where you take one photo a week for 52 weeks. It’s a pretty strict project. How do you manage to stay within your timeline? It’s not easy and some days it’s hard to remember to take a photo. I always keep my camera near me, either at the computer or when I wake up. That helps me to remember to pick up my camera and get shooting. What are you hoping to get out of this project? Well, I’m hoping to gain some experience and some good shots. I’m also

looking forward to going through all 365 photos at the end of the year and seeing how much my photography has changed. What do you consider your most successful photo? I can’t really pick any one of my photos as my most successful. I like to go by Imogen Cunningham’s quote “Which of the photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow.” What do you look for when you go out and shoot? Anything that catches my eye, or even expresses how I’m feeling or sums up the day. Most of the time I pick up the camera, and just start shooting at random things. Eventually I find something interesting and I go from there. Who do you draw inspiration from? I really enjoy looking at Ansel Adams’ black and whites. I find them very inspiring. I also like some of the spanish photographer Chema Madoz’s photos because his work is very creative and inspiring. Is there anything else you’d like to add? Don’t be afraid to try the project. If you don’t think you can do it, just give it a bit of a trial and see how it goes. If you find you don’t have the time, go for the 52 Week project and see how that works. Each photo from every day doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s a learning experience.

1. Fisherman

I couldn’t help wondering what the old fisherman was thinking about as he gazed out to sea. This was Kassiopi on Corfu.

2. Skopelos Harbour The lovely harbour in Skopelos, composed of whitewashed houses with tiled roofs in narrow alleys and stairs. It is part of the Northern Sporades, and is located between Skiathos and Alonissos. It became very popular due to the Mamma Mia movie. 3. The Bay

This small church is near Oia and was photographed late afternoon when the sea had turned deep blue to match the color of the dome.

4. Small Fishing Boat Mouse Island is located in the bay of Kanoni just south of Corfu Town, Mouse Island and Vlacherna are the most photographed places in the whole of Greece. 5. Venetian Harbor

Up Next: Next Is s u e B e a utif ul B lu r We are proud to announce that Lensbaby will be sponsoring the upcoming March issue of Snapixel Magazine. Many times, blurs are the root of frustration. But what if you looked at them from a different perspective? Blurs capture a series of moments, adding movement and once-in-a-lifetime photographs that can never be recreated.

Blurs are unique. They can be beautiful. What kind of beauty can you capture when you let the shutter speed slow and the exposure run rampant? When objects are smeared in motion across your images? We challenge you to make this the best issue yet.

Apr i l I s s u e Doc um e n tary April introduces Documentary Photography as the theme of the month.

to try your hand at creating honest, objective, and candid photography.

While documentary photography usually refers to a type of professional photojournalism, it may also be an amateur, artistic, or academic pursuit.

Find the poignancy in the simple and the raw. Capture the story of the common man or those who are ignored and oft forgotten.

Founded in the footsteps of photographers like Dorothea Lange, we encourage you

Find truth and you will find beauty.
